ヨハネは、カナで執り行われていた結婚式でイエス様がなされた奇跡を記録しています。その奇跡から私達はイエス・キリストがどんなお方であったのか、その姿の一面を見出すことができます。味気のない水が味わい深い喜び、そして楽しみのブドウ酒に変えられたところに、神様が私達の味気ない人生をも味わい深いものに変えてくださることを願っておられる、私達の楽しみと喜びが失われることがないように願っておられるということを私達は知ることができるのです。そうです、私達の笑みが失われることは神の御心ではないのです。

ヨハネ２章１節－１１節
皆さんのお手元にあります礼拝プログラムの表紙に記されていますように、私達の一年の標語は「キリストを知る」ということです。そのためにエペソ書より『わたしたちすべての者が、神の子を信じる信仰の一致と彼を知る知識の一致とに到達し、全き人となり、ついに、キリストの満ちみちた徳の高さにまで至るためである』（エペソ４章１３節）という御言葉から私達は互いに性別、年齢、文化、出身地、生まれも育ちも異なる者ですが「キリストを信じる信仰の一致」と「キリストを知る知識の一致」により一つとなることを私達はこの一年の目標に掲げました。
そして、この二つを成就するために不可欠なことは、私達がどのようにキリストを見ているかということであり、そのためには色々な角度からキリストを知らなければならないとお話しました。そこで今日はヨハネによる福音書に記されている一つの出来事を通してイエス様のお心に近づきましょう。ヨハネによる福音書２章１節－１１節をお読みします。
三日目にガリラヤのカナに婚礼があって、イエスの母がそこにいた。②イエスも弟子たちも、その婚礼に招かれた。③ぶどう酒がなくなったので、母はイエスに言った、「ぶどう酒がなくなってしまいました」。④イエスは母に言われた、「婦人よ、あなたは、わたしと、なんの係わりがありますか。わたしの時は、まだきていません」。⑤母は僕たちに言った、「このかたが、あなたがたに言いつけることは、なんでもして下さい」。⑥そこには、ユダヤ人のきよめのならわしに従って、それぞれ四、五斗もはいる石の水がめが、六つ置いてあった。⑦イエスは彼らに「かめに水をいっぱい入れなさい」と言われたので、彼らは口のところまでいっぱいに入れた。⑧そこで彼らに言われた、「さあ、くんで、料理がしらのところに持って行きなさい」。すると、彼らは持って行った。⑨料理がしらは、ぶどう酒になった水をなめてみたが、それがどこからきたのか知らなかったので、（水をくんだ僕たちは知っていた）花婿を呼んで ⑩言った、「どんな人でも、初めによいぶどう酒を出して、酔いがまわったころにわるいのを出すものだ。それだのに、あなたはよいぶどう酒を今までとっておかれました」 ⑪イエスは、この最初のしるしをガリラヤのカナで行い、その栄光を現された。そして弟子たちはイエスを信じた。
読んでお分かりのように、ここには結婚式の出来事が書かれています。この出来事はヨハネによる福音書だけに記されているもので、この書を書いたヨハネはイエス様の選ばれた１２弟子の中で当時一番、若かった人でイエス様から雷の子というニックネームを与えられた男です。その呼び名が示すように、雷がすさまじい音をたてて天地を切り裂くように、かつての彼も激しい気性をもっていたようです。
イエス様が私達のために十字架におかかりになられた時に１２弟子の中でこのヨハネだけが、その十字架のもとに、イエスの母マリアや数人の女性達と共にいました。イエス様は十字架上で七つの言葉を話しましたが、その一つについてヨハネはこう書いています。
26イエスは、その母と愛弟子とがそばに立っているのをごらんになって、母にいわれた、「婦人よ、ごらんなさい。これはあなたの子です」。27それからこの弟子に言われた、「ごらんなさい。これはあなたの母です」。そのとき以来、この弟子はイエスの母を自分の家に引きとった（ヨハネ１９章２６節－２７節)。
この愛弟子とはヨハネ自身のことで、彼はイエス様から「ごらんなさい、これはあなたの母です」と母マリアを託されたのです。ゆえにヨハネはこのイエス様の言葉を生涯守り、マリアを母親のようにして、その面倒を最後まで忠実に見たのです。以前、トルコにあるエペソの遺跡を訪ねましたところ、ガイドさんが「このエペソでマリアはヨハネと共に余生を過ごしました、そのマリアの家が今もエペソにあります」と話してくれました。イエス様亡き後、まさしく親子のように共にいた二人ですから、きっとヨハネはマリアから今、お読みしましたカナで起きた婚礼についてこんな風に話を聞いたことでしょう。
「あの婚宴にはあなたもいたわね。そうよ、ナザレの私の家の近所に住んでいたイエスとも幼馴染だったヤコブとハンナの結婚式で（このあたりは想像です）、あの時はうっかりしていてブドウ酒が足りなくなってしまったの。皆が慌てている中、私はこっそりとイエスにそのことを打ち明けたの。彼はいつも私を助けてくれたから。そうしたら、彼は僕たちに瓶に水を満たすように話していたわ。何でそんなことを言っているのかしらと思っていたら、その水がみな、最高のブドウ酒に変わっていたのよ！」。
この婚宴には弟子達も招かれていたとありますから、ヨハネもその場にいたことでしょうし、きっとその最高のブドウ酒を飲んだことでしょう。ですからヨハネはマリアに言ったことでしょう「そうそう、確かにあの時のブドウ酒は最高だったよ」と。この日のことをヨセフはマリアから何度も聞いたことでしょう。年を取れば、取るほど、私達は昔の楽しい思い出を懐かしんで話すものです。
当時の結婚の祝いは一週間も続くことがあり、近所の人達が総出で、新婚の夫婦を喜んだといいます。新郎新婦にとって、その間だけは生涯、最初で最後、王と王妃のような取り扱いを受けたといいます。まさしく、その期間は幼子からお年寄りまで、陽気に楽しく、時を過ごしたに違いありませんん。
今日の箇所はそのような最中にブドウ酒がなくなったということなのです。言うまでもない、それは祝宴に水を差すようなことになりかねない出来事です。盛り上がっていた宴が、そのことでしぼんでしまい、やがてそのことを知った人達は家路につき始めるでしょう、七日の祝宴の予定が三日でお開きとなってしまうかもしれません。
イエス様はその生涯、多くの奇跡をされ、その多くは人の病を癒すというものでした。その病はその人の人生において最も大きな問題であり、また時にはその人の命にかかわることでした。イエス様はそのような者達に向き合い、その病を癒しました。その背後にはイエス様の彼らに対するあわれみがありました。
それではこの婚礼の奇跡をイエス様はどうしてなされたのでしょうか。確かにワインがなくなったということは、予定されていた式においては重大事です。しかし、そのことによって彼らの命が失われることはありません。
当初、マリアがこの緊急事態をイエス様に打ち明けました時、イエス様はマリアに向かって言ったのです「（このことが）私と何の関わりがありますか」、英語の聖書はここを「why do you involve me?」と言っています。直訳しますと「どうしてこの一件に私を巻き込むのですか？」ということです。イエス様は当初、この事態を解決するか否かとお考えになり、結果としてはそれに関わることをよしとされ、その問題を解決されました。その時、イエス様を突き動かしたものは何なのでしょうか。病を癒される時には彼らに対するあわれみがその奇跡につながったことでしょう。それでは、この一件に対してイエス様はなぜインボルブされたのでしょうか。
イエス様は喜び、楽しんでいる者達の喜びと楽しみが失われることのないようにこの奇跡をなされたのではないでしょうか。もっと分かりやすく言いますと、彼らの笑顔が失われることがないように水をブドウ酒に変えたのではないでしょうか。
そして、このことについてヨハネは『イエスは、この最初のしるしをガリラヤのカナで行い、その栄光を現された。そして弟子たちはイエスを信じた』と書き残しました。すなわち、この奇跡こそがイエス様が一番最初になされたもので、このことによって神の栄光が現されたというのです。ヨハネがこの言葉を書いた時というのは、既にイエス様は彼と共にありませんでしたが、かつてイエス様と過ごした年月を思い起こしながら、「そうなのだ、私が三年半を共に過ごしたイエス・キリストはいつも俺たちの喜びと楽しみを大切にしてくださったお方なのだ。我々の間にはいつも笑いがあった」ということをかみしめるように、この言葉を書いたのではないでしょうか。
このカナの婚礼からイエス様がどんなお方であったのか、その姿の一面を私達は見出すことができます。このイエスの一番最初の奇跡において、味気のない水を味わい深いブドウ酒に変えたところに、神が私達の味気ない人生をも味わい深いものに変えてくださることを願っておられる、私達の楽しみと喜びが失われることがないようにイエス様は願っているということがうかがい知れないでしょうか。
私は今でも忘れることがありません。三年前、やたらと太陽の光がまぶしいサンディエゴ空港を飛び立ち、機内ではハリウッド映画を観ながら、２０時間後にイスラエル、テルアビブの近代的な空港に到着し、そこで乗り合いのバンに揺られて小一時間、聖書にも出てきます夕暮れのエルサレムのヤッホ門の前で一人、バスから降りたった時のことを。バンから外に出た瞬間、歴史の重さに圧倒されてしまうような石垣の壁と道、世界で最も新しい国から世界でも最も古い国の街角に突然やってきてしまった衝撃です。
数日、そんなエルサレムをくまなく歩き回り、南の死海を目指しました。埃っぽいエリコの遺跡に立ち寄り、ソドムをまわり、その一帯はネゲブという荒野で、あのモーセに率いられたイスラエルの民がさまよった場所です。今はその痕跡な何もなく、じゃりじゃりした砂埃が舞う厳しい土地です。
一般的に聖書の神は「荒野の神」とか「砂漠の神と言われることがあります。厳しい環境の中でイスラエルの民が神に導かれていったからです。またある人はこの神をエルサレムという歴史の古い、城壁で囲まれた、厳かな町の中で崇められた神だと思われることでしょう。
しかし、そんなユダの荒野、荘厳なエルサレムから北上し、ガリラヤに向かいますと、渇いていた私の心、厳かな私の心は緑の野、野に咲く花、ガリラヤ湖に反射する湖面の光に溶かされていきました。そうです、その場所こそイエス・キリストが宣教の中心として選んだ場所なのです。
ある朝、重々しい雰囲気のエルサレムを出た私は、昼前にはガリラヤ湖畔のカぺナウムにいました。そうです、そこはガリラヤにおけるイエス様の宣教の拠点となった場所です。その日は日差しがポカポカしており、目の前では雀が楽しそうに戯れていました（嘘ではありません）。私はそこでしばし、温かい日差し、心地よい風に神の愛を感じて横になって空を眺めたのです。自分の存在がそのまま受け入れられているのだ、与えられているあなたの命を私と共に喜び、楽しみなさいという神の臨在がそこにはありました。
それがイエスの愛したガリラヤです。イエス・キリストは御自身の活動の舞台を荒野から、エルサレムから、緑の野が広がる、ガリラヤ湖の水際、花が咲き乱れ、命が躍動する土地へと移されたのです。この土地がイエス・キリストとはどんなお方なのかということをあらわしているのです。イエス様はご自身の側に１２人の弟子をおき、このガリラヤを舞台にして彼らを訓練したのです。
はたして喜びとか楽しみ、そして笑いというものはいつ起こるのでしょうか。旧約聖書に出てくるユダヤ民族の祖、アブラハムとその妻サラが笑ったということが聖書には記録されています。
「アブラハムはひれ伏して笑い、心の中で言った「百歳の者にどうして子が生まれよう。サラはまた九十歳にもなって、どうして産むことができようか」（創世記１７章１７節）
「それでサラは心の中で笑って言った、わたしは衰え、主人もまた老人であるのに、私に楽しみなどありえようか」（創世記１８章１２節）
「そしてサラは言った、神はわたしを笑わせてくださった。聞く者は皆わたしのことで笑うでしょう」（創世記２１章６節）
彼らがなぜ笑ったかご存知ですか。１００歳になるアブラハム、９０歳になるサラに子供が与えられるといわれたからです。すなわち、彼らの笑いは「自分の固定概念が壊された時」に笑いとなったのです。分かりやすくいいますと「こうなるべき」と思っていたものが予想外のことになる時に私達は笑うのです。
そのように考えますとこのカナの婚礼もまさしく、固定概念が崩された物語なのです。言うまでもない、水がブドウ酒に変えられたことはもちろんそうですし、また、ここに記されていますようにまだ酔っていない、ブドウ酒の良しあしも分かるような「最初に良いブドウ酒を出す」ということが通説であったのに、この場合、「最後に最高のものが振る舞われた」のです。まさしく、それは予想外のことでありました。
ヨハネはこの奇跡についてそのブドウ酒がどこから来るのか、『水をくんだ僕たちは知っていた』（９）と記しています。そうです、このカナの婚礼の台所事情を知っていた僕だけがこのイエスがなさったことを見聞きしていました。彼らはこれらの驚くべき出来事、ハプニングを見てどうしたと思いますか。最初はあっけにとられていたと思います、しかし、後になって我にかえって彼らは興奮して、笑ったのではないでしょうか。「ぶどう酒が尽きてしまう」と血の気が引くような現実の中で、しかし、それがイエスによって最高のブドウ酒と変えられた、一番最初にサーブしていたものよりもはるかによいブドウ酒をサーブしている自分達の姿に思わず彼らは笑い出したに違いありません。イエス様は新郎新婦、その家族や友人達の笑顔が失われないようにその奇跡をなし、その奇跡自体が事の全てを知っている僕達に喜びと笑いをもたらしました。
このように「笑いとは固定概念が壊される時に起きる」ということであるならば、私達のクリスチャン・ライフには笑いが保証されているということです。なぜなら信仰をもつということは本来、固定概念が壊されることを意味するからです。そもそも、それまで神なき生活をしていた者がイエスを主として生きるなんて、そのことはそれまでのものが崩されることの最たるもので、そこには喜びと笑いが生まれます。私達の習慣とか経験、さらには私達の常識、限界、数字による確率ということまでを超えた神の働きに私達が目を止めていくことが私達の信仰生活なのですから、そのような意味における神様が私達の生活の中になさるハプニングを私達は日毎に経験していく、そして、そこから私達の生活に笑いが起こる、それがクリスチャン・ライフなのです。
先ほども申し上げましたように、イエス様はこのカナの婚礼の一件にインボルブされ、それゆえにこの奇跡は起きたのです。そして、その喜びと楽しみを体験したのは、同じく自らこの一件に手間暇をかけてインボルブした僕達だったのです。これは私達の人生の一つの法則です。イエス様が私達の喜びや楽しみにインボルブしようとされているのなら、私達もそのイエス様の働きにインボルブしなければ、そこに喜びと楽しみは生まれないのです。
イエスの１２弟子達のその後については聖書には記されていない伝承がいくつもあるのですが、その一つにヨハネと猟師との間にもたれたこんな会話があります。
ヨハネは雀と遊ぶのが好きだったそうです（雀と遊ぶと言われてもピンとこないかもしれませんが、私はお話しましたようにあのカぺナウムで雀が嬉しそうに、戯れている姿を見て、雀と遊ぶということの意味が分かりました）。そんなヨハネのもとにある日、若い猟師が訪ねてきて、彼が雀と遊んでいるのを見て驚き、こう尋ねました「どうして、あなたは雀と遊んで時間を無駄に使っているのです。あなたにはすべきことがたくさんあるでしょう」ヨハネは猟師に尋ねました「君は猟師でありながらなぜ、このことが分からないのかね。君の弓の弦（げん）は、何故今ピンと張っていないのですか？」猟師は答えました。「そうしたら駄目なのです。弦をピンと張りっ放しにしておくと、弓を飛ばず力がなくなって、いざという時に矢を射ることができなくなるのです」
ヨハネは猟師に言いました「ちょうど君が普段は弓の弦（げん）をゆるめているように、人間は、普段は自分の緊張をゆるめてリラックスしていた方がいいんだよ。もしリラックスして遊ぶ時がなかったら、大切なことのために力が出せないのだよ。私がどうしてもやらなければならないこと、しかも私が全力を注いで集中しなければならない時に、肝心な力がその時に出ないのだよ」。
この伝承の信憑性は私には分かりません。しかし、もしヨハネがこのような人物であったのなら、かつて雷のように気短であった人とは思えないほどにヨハネは変えられたということでありましょう。ヨハネの晩年はローマ帝国による迫害の嵐が吹き始めていますから、彼が置かれている状況というのはそれなりの緊張が漂うものであったでしょう。そのような中で、この彼の心の余裕はどこから来るのでしょうか。かつて雷の子と呼ばれたヨハネの生涯に一番、影響を与えた方は誰でしょうか。言うまでもないイエス様です。
私達、人間のささやかな日常に起こる喜びと楽しみと笑いというものを大切にされた、それらを守るためになされた奇跡こそがイエスがなされた一番最初の奇跡だと誇るかのように書き記したヨハネ、そんなイエスの姿を常に間近に見続けた人であるのなら、彼がこのように緊迫した状態の中であっても、否、そのような時だからこそ遊び心を大切にする人間となったとしても、何も不思議はないのです。
あの無神論者であったニーチェが言った言葉を思い出しましょう。「私がキリスト教徒にならないのは、彼らの間に喜びというものを見いだすことができないからだ」。イエス様はあなたの人生を喜び、楽しむことを望まれるお方です。神を仰ぎ、見えるところによらず、神を信じて歩む私達は自分のちっぽけな固定概念が壊されることを体験することでしょう。そんな私達から笑いが失われることはないのです。そして、それを一番、願っているのは、何をかくそうイエス・キリストなのです。お祈りしましょう。
So that you would not lose laughter

John 2:1-11
Our theme for this year is “to know Christ.” This theme is printed on the front cover of our program you have in hand. Ephesians says: ”we [should] all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.” (Ephesians 4:13) Although our church members are so diverse, with different background, upbringing, genders, and ages, our goal of this year is to make sure that our church members will unite in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God.
In order to achieve these two goals, it is important that we understand Jesus Christ better. In fact, we must study Jesus Christ from all angles. For that reason, I would like to look into the heart of Jesus Christ with you this morning by studying one episode recorded in the Gospel According to John.
This is found in John 2:1-11 reads:
On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.” 4 “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” 6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim. 8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.” 11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. (John 2:1-11)
As you can see, this episode happened during a wedding celebration. Only the Gospel According to John recorded this episode. John was the youngest one among 12 disciples. Jesus called John by a nickname of Son of Thunder. As this name indicates, this John had an explosive temperament just like a roaring thunder.
When Jesus was crucified for our sins, only this John among 12 disciples was at the foot of the cross with Mary, mother of Jesus, together with several other women. Remember that Jesus spoke seven times on the cross? John records one of them in this way:
26 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, here is your son,” 27 and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home. (John 19:26-27)
This disciple was John. Jesus placed his mother Mary in the hands of John saying “Here is your mother” to John. In fact, John looked after Mary for the rest of her life just as Jesus told him to do. When I once visited the site of old Ephesus in Turkey, the guide told me that “Mary lived her remaining life with John in this Ephesus. The house of Mary is still in this town today.” After Jesus was crucified, these two lived like a mother and a son. John must have heard about the episode of the wedding at Cana from Mary. Perhaps she told it in this way:
“You were at that wedding, too. Remember it was a wedding between Jacob and Hanna who used to live not too far from my house. At that time, I did not realize until too late that we were running low on the wine. Everyone was near panic. But, I told Jesus about the situation since I knew that he was helpful all the time. Then I heard Jesus telling the servants to fill the jars with water. I wondered why he told them so. But, that water turned into the finest wine.”
Since the disciples were invited to the wedding, John must have been there, too, and enjoyed that finest wine. So, John must have responded to Mary saying: “Yes, I remember how fine the wine was.” I am sure Mary told the same story many times to John. As we get older, we tend to recall old memory again and again.
Wedding in those days used to last as long as one week, and the entire neighborhood was invited to bless the newly wed. Bride and bride groom were treated like a queen and a king. This was a happiest occasion of their life. Everyone, from children to elders spent this happy and festive occasion together.
This story tells us that they were running out of wine in the middle of the celebration. That would put a damper on the happy occasion. Some of the disappointed guests at the wedding party could have decided to leave early. The seven-day party could be cut short into a three day affair.
Jesus performed many miracles in his life, most of which were to cure the sick.
Sickness was a serious trouble to people, even threatening the life of such people. Jesus went to sick people and cured their disease. Jesus was full of compassion to the people.
Why, then, did Jesus perform this particular miracle at the wedding? Yes, the situation was dire. Without wine, the celebration could not continue. But it did not threaten life of anybody there.
Please recall that when Mary informed Jesus about this dire situation, Jesus said to Mary: “Why do you involve me?” In other words, Jesus questioned why he should be called to help this situation. However, after observing the situation, Jesus decided he should be involved and must help the spirit of the wedding. What prompted Jesus to take that action? We can understand that Jesus cured the sick out of his compassion to them. But, why did Jesus decide to perform this particular miracle at the wedding?
I believe Jesus performed this miracle so that the happy and joyful spirit of the wedding would not be lost. We could say that Jesus changed the water into wine so that smile and laughter of the people would not be lost.
John recorded about this incidence this way: “What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.” In fact this was the very first miracle Jesus performed, which revealed the glory of God. By the time John recorded these words, Jesus was no longer with him. But, he must have included this episode in the Gospel Book because John felt that: “During three and half years Jesus was with us, Jesus made sure that joy and happiness were with us all the time. Our life was always filled with laughter.”
From this episode of the wedding at Cana, we can get a glimpse of Jesus’ character. Through this very first miracle in which he changed bland water into fine wine, Jesus revealed that he wanted to change our colorless life into a life filled with joy and happiness. In fact, Jesus always cared for us making sure that we find happiness in our life.
I still recall vividly about my trip to Israel three years ago. Sun was shining brightly when I left San Diego Airport. After 20 hours of watching movies in the airplane, I arrived at the modern Tel Aviv airport. Then, I rode a mini-bus for another hour. Finally, I stepped out into the front of the Jaffa Gate of Jerusalem. The stone walls and road there told the long history behind them. I realized that I just traveled from the newest country to streets of the oldest country in the world.
I walked around the city of Jerusalem for next few days. Then, I started toward the Dead Sea in the south. I stopped at dusty relics of Jericho and Sodom in a wilderness area called Negev. This was where Moses and people of Israel used to wonder. But, I saw no wondering people there. I only saw rough gravels and blowing wind.
God is often described in the Bible as the “God of wilderness” or “God of Desert”. God led the people of Israel through such harsh environments. This is also the same God who is honored in this historical and sacred city of Jerusalem, surrounded by stone walls.
But, as I traveled north from the wilderness area and majestic Jerusalem, I soon found myself in the region of Galilee filled with green pasture and wild flowers. Bright sunshine was dancing on water in the Sea of Galilee. Yes, this was the place Jesus Christ had chosen as the site of his mission to deliver words of God.
One morning, I left solemn city of Jerusalem, and before noon, I reached a town of Capernaum by the Sea of Galilee. This land served as the center of mission of Jesus in Galilee. The day was warm with sunshine. I was greeted by sparrows playing happily in front of me. (I am not telling a lie.) There, I spent some time, lying on my back, basking in the warm sunshine and gentle breeze. As I did so, I could feel the love of God surrounding me. God was with me. I could hear God telling me to enjoy and cherish the life that was given by God. I felt so peaceful.
This was Galilee that Jesus loved. Jesus Christ started his mission at a wilderness area. He moved his site of mission from Jerusalem to the land of green pastures by the Sea of Galilee that is filled with life and blossoming flowers. The fact that he selected this site as a center of his mission tells us the character of Jesus Christ. Jesus selected 12 disciples and trained them in this land of Galilee for his mission.
By the way, do you know what brings Joy, happiness and laughter to our life? The Old Testament records an episode in which Abraham, the father of Jewish people, and his wife Sarah laughed.
“Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, ‘Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?’” (Genesis 17:17)
“So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, ‘After I am worn out and my lord is old, will I now have this pleasure?’” (Genesis 18:12)
“Sarah said, ‘God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.’” (Genesis 21:6)
Do you see why they laughed?? Abraham was 100 years old, and Sarah was 90 years old. But, they were told that Sarah will bear a child. They laughed when their preconceived thinking was completely shattered by God. We can say that we laugh when we encounter a situation which is completely unexpected.
This wedding at Cana will also qualify as one incidence when preconceived concept was completely shattered. Not only was the water changed into wine, but this miracle also shattered the accepted thinking that fine wine should be served at the beginning while the guest are still somber. But, in this case, the finest wine was served at the end of the wedding party. This was certainly unexpected.
About this miracle, John said the servants who drew water knew where the wine had come from. (Verse 9) Only the servants attending to the kitchen at the wedding knew what Jesus had done. How do you think they reacted to this amazing happening? I am sure they were astounded at the beginning. But, I am also sure they got excited and laughed afterwards. They were worried sick that they were running low on the wine. But, Jesus converted water into the finest wine. And these servants were filled with joy and laughter to see the astounded guests praising the fine quality of wine. Jesus conducted this act of miracle so that smiles are not wiped off the faces of the newlywed couple, their family, and friends. This episode also brings joy to us as we read about it today.
Now, if laughter is generated when preconceived expectation is shattered and our expectations are found to be way off, our Christian life is guaranteed to be filled with laughter. If you just think about it, having faith in God is certainly beyond our human expectations. We used to live a god-less life. But now Lord Jesus is at the center of our life. This is most amazing and certainly unexpected. That is why our life is filled with joy and laughter. When we accept God into our life, our old life is completely changed. What we encounter in life can no longer be predicted with mathematical probability. Our life is full of new happenings because God is with us. That is why our life is filled with laughter. That is a natural by-product of Christian life.
As I have pointed out earlier, Jesus decided to be involved in the wedding at Cana. And that was how the miracle happened. And the servants who were also involved in this wedding party also experienced this joy and happiness first hand. We realize one basic fact from this. Namely, Jesus decided to involve himself in our life to bring joy and happiness. And, we are allowed to participate in such joy and happiness only when we decide to involve ourselves with the works of Jesus.
Jesus had 12 disciples. There are many stories told about these disciples that were not recorded in the Bible. One such story is a conversation that supposedly took place between John and a hunter.
It seems that John liked to play with sparrows. (I think I can understand John better since I watched those sparrows play happily in the town of Capernaum.) One day, a young hunter came to visit John. This man was surprised to find John playing with sparrows, and asked: “Why are you wasting away your time playing with sparrows? There must be more important things you should be doing.” John replied to the hunter: “I thought a hunter like you would understand. Let me ask you why is your bow not stretched fully now?” The hunter replied: “It is a bad idea to keep the bow stretched all the time. If I do so, the bow would lose its elasticity and would not be able to shoot arrows with full strength.”
John said to this hunter: “Just like you allow your bow to slack most of the time, we should learn to let go our tension and relax. Without time to relax and play, we cannot be strong when we need to be. I try to relax most of the time so that I can exert full force when crucial moment comes.”
I do not know where this story came from. If this story is true, however, the personality of John must have undergone quite a change from his old short-tempered and hot-blooded self. The later days of John were spent in time of persecution by the Roman Empire. He was always facing tense and difficult situations. How did he maintain his sanity in such circumstances? By the way, who exerted the most influence to John, the Son of Thunder? It was Jesus himself.
John told us that Jesus knew joy and laughter were very important part of life. John recorded the first miracle Jesus had performed. John lived his life with Jesus close-up and first-hand. It is not surprising, then, that John valued and cherished playful and relaxed time even in the hardest circumstances he had to face.
Nietzsche, that famous atheist, said: “I am not a Christian because I cannot find joy among Christians.” Jesus, however, wishes us to enjoy and cherish our life. When we look up to God and live our life believing what we cannot see with our naked eyes, our preconception will be shattered almost daily. That is why our life is filled with laughter. And, Jesus is the one who wants more than anyone else that our life is filled with laughter.

５）クリスチャンとして神を信じて生きていくということは、多くの固定概念が壊されていることを目の当たりにすることでもあります。そのような意味でクリスチャンライフには驚きと笑い、楽しみがあるのだと思いませんか。私達の信仰ゆえの楽しみや喜びにはどんなものがありますか。
６）ヨハネは水がブドウ酒になったことについて、そのブドウ酒がどこから来るのか、『水をくんだ僕たちは知っていた』（９）と記しています。イエス様がこの一件にインボルブされたように、イエスの奇しきわざを見るためには私達も積極的にその一見にインボルブすることが臨まれます。あなたはこのような姿勢をもっていますか。
７）無神論者であったニーチェは「私がキリスト教徒にならないのは、彼らの間に喜びというものを見いだすことができないからだ」と書き残していますが、これはあなたにとって真実な言葉ですか。どうしたら私達はこのような印象を拭い去ることができるのでしょうか。
