私達日本人は道が大好きです。茶道、剣道、柔道、華道・・・。これらの作法や競技を私達は道として受け止めています。日本人のみならず人はいつの時代も道について語ってきました。しかし、ここでイエス・キリストは自分自身が道なのだと言われました。
「分け登る麓の道は多けれど、同じ高嶺の月を見るかな」という歌があります。読んでお分かりのように、山頂にいたる道はたくさんあるけれど、高嶺で見る月はみな同じだということで、いかなる宗教も同じ高嶺に通じており、そこで見る月は同じだということです。
しかし、この言葉に対してイエス様がここで言われたことはご自身の独自性でした。すなわちイエス様は「わたしは道である」と言われ、続く言葉ではさらに「誰でもわたしによらないでは父のみもと、すなわち神のもとに行くことはできない」とまで言われたのです。しかし、それにしても「絶対的なものはない」と信じる者にとりまして、「誰でもわたしによらないでは」というような発言は耳触りとなります。そして、ため息をつきながら「あぁ～、なんて排他的な言葉なのだろう」と思うのです。

わたしは道である

5トマスはイエスに言った、「主よ、どこへおいでになるのか、わたしたちにはわかりません。どうしてその道がわかるでしょう」。6イエスは彼に言われた、「わたしは道であり、真理であり、命である。だれでもわたしによらないでは、父のみもとに行くことはできない。7もしあなたがたがわたしを知っていたならば、わたしの父をも知ったであろう。しかし、今は父を知っており、またすでに父を見たのである」（ヨハネ１４章５節－７節）

しかし、果たしてそうでしょうか。実際に高嶺に導かれた者達は、全ての道がここに導かれており、ここでは民が同じ月を眺めているのだと思うのでしょうか。ある道によって導かれる高嶺で見る月は一つではなく、三つ、四つもあったり、別の道によって導かれる高嶺で見る月は緑色をしていたり、他のところでは丸いはずの月が三角であったりということはないのでしょうか。
そこで今日はイエス・キリストが言われた「わたしは道である」ということと「誰でもわたしによらなければ父なる神のみもとに行くことはできない」というイエス様の言葉がどんな意味を持っているのかということをみていきたいと思います。
聖書は人間に対してこのような言葉を記しています。『あなたがたは、羊のようにさ迷っていたが、今は、たましいの牧者であり監督であるかたのもとに、たち帰ったのである』（Ⅰペテロ２章２５節）。
聖書は私達は羊のようにさ迷っていると言います。こんなことを言われても、私達にはピンときません。私達の自己認識にこんな考えはまずないからです。しかし、私達とは異なった視点で私達を見つめる神様によれば、私達はさ迷っているというのです。
さ迷うということは私達が本来歩むべき道を見失っている状態をあらわします。自分がどの道を歩いているのか、否、道すらもないような場所を歩いているという状態です。言うなれば道を歩む、歩まない以前の問題として、私達はその道すら見出していないということです。
かつて神様が天地を創造された時、その最後に神は人を造られました。この最初の人、すなわちアダムとエバはエデンと呼ばれる園に暮らし、そこで神と親しい関係に置かれていました。しかし、彼らはあの「食べてはならない」という禁断の実を食べてしまい、その瞬間からその心に恐れと羞恥心が生まれました。それまでは彼らを取り囲む自然はもろ手をあげて彼らを祝福し、彼らはその天地の恵みを存分に受けていたのですが、その瞬間からこの自然も彼らに牙をむくようになりました。そして、遂に彼らはその園から逃げるかのようにこの世界の只中に失踪したのです。言うまでもありません、その時、その世界には道なく、当然、道しるべもなく、彼らはまさしくこの世界をさ迷い生きたのです。その末裔が私達であり、神の目にそんな私達は今もさ迷っていると聖書は言うのです。
しかし、聖書はそんな私達にも道を見出すチャンスがあるといいます。詩篇はそのチャンスについてこう書いています。
1「主に感謝せよ、主は恵みふかく、そのいつくしみはとこしえに絶えることがない」と、2主にあがなわれた者は言え。主は彼らを悩みからあがない、3もろもろの国から、東、西、北、南から彼らを集められた。4彼らは人なき荒野にさまよい、住むべき町にいたる道を見いださなかった。5彼らは飢え、またかわき、その魂は彼らのうちに衰えた。6彼らはその悩みのうちに主に呼ばわったので、主は彼らをその悩みから助け出し、7住むべき町に行き着くまで、まっすぐな道に導かれた。8どうか、彼らが主のいつくしみと、人の子らになされたくすしきみわざとのために、主に感謝するように（詩篇１０７篇１節－８節）。
ここに記されている人は荒野にさまよい、住むべき町にいたる道を見出すことができずに、その魂は枯渇していたのです。しかし、その悩みの只中でこの人は自分がさ迷える者であることを自覚し、その悩みを神に呼ばわったので、住むべき町に続く道へと神様はこの人を導かれたというのです。そう、ここに記されていますように、私達が自ら歩むべき道を求めるのなら神は私達がおるべき町、すなわち神のもとへと私達を導いてくださいます。イエス・キリストは私がその道であり、この道を通って行かなければ、そこにいたることはできないと言われたのです。なぜ、その道でなければならないのでしょうか。聖書中のテモテ書がヒントを書いています。
『4神は、すべての人が救われて、真理を悟るに至ることを望んでおられる。5神は唯一であり、神と人との間の仲保者もただひとりであって、それは人なるキリスト・イエスである』（Ⅰテモテ２章４節－５節）
神が望んでいることは私達、全ての者がさ迷っている状態から救われて、真理を悟ることができるようになるということです。先ほどの詩篇の言葉を借りて言うのなら神が望んでいることはさ迷っている者達が、私達が住むべき町に至る道を見出すことであるということです。どちらも何を言っているのかといいますと、さ迷う私達が神にいたることを神ご自身も願っているということです。そして、そのことのために神と人との間に立つ仲保者はただ一人であり、それがイエス・キリストであるとテモテは書いているのです。しかし、実際にイエス・キリストが神と私達の仲保者であるということはどういうことなのでしょうか。
私達は夜空に月を見ます。しかし、その月に行きたいからといって何百回、何千回、何万回と夜空に向かって繰り返しジャンプしていれば、私たちが月にいたるということは決してありません。同じように私達が何十年来も自らの体を打ちたたき修行をしましても私たちは神にいたることはできません。このことを人類は大昔から試みてきていますが、実際のところ、そのようなことによって私達が神に近づくことはないのです。中にはそんな苦行を繰り返していればその人自身が神となるというような、とんでもないことを言う人も出てくるのです。聖書は言います、人の側には神にいたる術（すべ）はないと。
神という存在は本来、それほどまでに私達とはかけ離れている聖なる存在なのだと聖書は言います。そして、このような私達の限界ということを突き詰めていきますと、私達は各々の心にある罪というものに気がつかされ、絶対的に聖なるお方の前に、罪ある私達がそもそも近づくなどということはできないのだと知るようになるのです。
ここで世の多くの宗教とキリスト教との違いが一つ、出てきます。多くの宗教も呼び名こそ異なれ、この人間の罪に着目しています。そうです、人の心にある諸々の悪しき思い、そしてその思いを言動としてしまう人の姿です。それをどう取り扱うのか、多くの宗教もそれを課題としています。そして、その解決の一つとして私達の身をきよめるための儀式を執り入れている宗教は無数にあります。何を隠そう、聖書に記されている人間もキリストがあらわれる前はそのようなきよめの儀式に精力を注いでいたのです。すなわち、人と神との間に祭司が立ち、動物の生贄をもって、人の罪の許しを神に求めていたのです。日ごとに繰り返されるその儀式のために流された動物の血はおびただしいものでした。しかし、この儀式に対してヘブル書ははっきりとこう書いています。
11こうして、すべての祭司は立って日ごとに儀式を行い、たびたび同じようないけにえをささげるが、それらは決して罪を除き去ることはできない（へブル１０章１１節）。
儀式というものが日毎に継続されていきますと、やがてそれは修練と呼ばれるような域に達します。しかし、聖書ははっきりとそのような儀式や修練によって人の罪を除き去ることはできない、すなわちそのことによって人は神に近づくことはできない断言するのです。言うなれば、このことは私達が繰り返し夜空に向かってジャンプして月に触れようとしていることと同じことなのです。では私達はどうしたら神にいたることができるのでしょうか。ヘブル書はそのただ一つの方法を書いています。
12しかるに、キリストは多くの罪のために一つの永遠のいけにえをささげた後、神の右に座し、13それから、敵をその足台とするときまで、待っておられる。14彼は一つのささげ物によって、きよめられた者たちを永遠に全うされたのである。15聖霊もまた、わたしたちにあかしをして、16「わたしが、それらの日の後、彼らに対して立てようとする契約はこれであると、主が言われる。わたしの律法を彼らの心に与え、彼らの思いのうちに書きつけよう」と言い、17さらに、「もはや、彼らの罪と彼らの不法とを、思い出すことはしない」と述べている。18これらのことに対するゆるしがある以上、罪のためのささげ物は、もはやあり得ない。19兄弟たちよ。こういうわけで、わたしたちはイエスの血によって、はばかることなく聖所にはいることができ、20彼の肉体なる幕をとおり、わたしたちのために開いて下さった新しい生きた道をとおって、はいって行くことができ・・・（へブル１０章１１節ー２０節）
古今東西、多くの人達が道について語りました。スポーツ競技やある作法を習得することは一つの道を歩くことであり、その道の奥深さに私達は心が打たれます。しかし、それらの道が、ここで言われている場所に私達を導くことはありません。多くの宗教は己の自制心と忍耐力をもってその道を歩き続けることにより神の域にいたることができると言いますが、その道はここで言われている場所に私達を導くことはありません。
すなわち、私達の側にこの道を踏破し、神に近づく力は何もなく、ましてや神との関係を結ぶために私達の側から神に交渉できるるものは何もないのです。そうではなくて、ただイエス・キリストがご自身を私達の罪の身代わりとして捧げてくださったことにより、キリストが神と私達の仲保者となってくださり、そのことによって私達は神と永遠の関係を結ぶことができるようになったのです。このことは実に驚くべきことで、イエス・キリストにあってこの関係を結ぶ時に神は私達に『もはや、彼らの罪と彼らの不法とを、思い出すことはしない』（１７）と宣言をしてくださり、その時にはじめて私達の道は神のもとにいたったと言えるのです。もう少し、このことを詳しくお話しましょう。
聖書の記録によりますとイエス・キリスト以前まで、神にいたる道はあるところまでは人を導くのですが、そこから先には進めないという場所がありました。その象徴となっていたのはエルサレムの神殿にある至聖所と呼ばれている部屋でした。その至聖所には年に一度だけ大祭司だけが入ることができ（出エジプト３０章１０節、へブル９章７節）、大祭司はそこで神の前において全イスラエルの罪のために犠牲の動物を捧げ、民を代表して人の罪の執り成しをしたのです。
その時代、至聖所は神の臨在、すなわちそのところに神がおられるという神聖な場所で、その部屋には他の部屋と隔てる幕がかけてありました。一世紀のユダヤ人の歴史家であったヨセフスはその幕は上から下まで約２０メートルあり、その厚さは１０センチもあった記録を残しています。出エジプト記にはこの分厚い幕は青と紫と朱色のより糸でできていたと書かれています。まさしくその幕こそが神と人とを隔てていたものでした。
人は罪ある者ゆえに、その神聖なる場所に入ることができなかったのです（イザヤ５９章１節ー２節）。実際にそのところに大祭司以外の人間が入るのなら、神の圧倒的なきよさの前にその人は打たれて死んでしまうのです。すなわち、この垂れ幕こそが私達と神とを隔てていたものだったのです。しかし、イエス・キリストが十字架にかかり、その息を引き取られた時に驚くべきことがこの神殿の至聖所で起こりました。マタイはその時のことをこう記録しています。『5イエスはもう一度大声で叫んで、ついに息をひきとられた。51すると見よ、神殿の幕が上から下まで真二つに裂けた』（マタイ２７章５０－５１節）。
この２０００年前の出来事は今を生きる私達と何か関係があるのでしょうか。そうなのです、エルサレムの神殿の幕が下からではなく、上から真っ二つに裂けたということ、それはすなわち神ご自身がこの幕を裂かれたことにより、人と神との隔てはなくなり、私達はいつでもキリストを通して神のもとに行くことができるようになったのです。そうです、まさしくヘブル書が『19兄弟たちよ。こういうわけで、わたしたちはイエスの血によって、はばかることなく聖所にはいることができ、20彼の肉体なる幕をとおり、わたしたちのために開いて下さった新しい生きた道をとおって、はいって行くことができるのであり・・・』と書いている通りです。（へブル１０章１１節ー２０節）ここに人が神にいたる道が開かれたのです。そうです、このイエス・キリストが神と私達の間の仲保者となり、十字架におかかりくださり、死んでくださったことにより、私達のために開かれている新しい生きた道をとおって、はばかることなく神に近づくことができるのです。まさしくこのことこそがイエス様が言われた「わたしが道である」ということ、また「わたしによらずして神のもとに行くことはできない」ということの意味するところなのです。
私たちに「まだまだ修行が足りません」と私達を咎める宗教家ならいるでしょう。「もっとお布施とあなたの時間を捧げなくてはなりません」と私達を諭す教祖ならいるでしょう。しかし、私達の周りを見渡す時に、私達のために自らの命を捨てて、神と私達の間にある隔ての幕を裂き、私達がはばかることなく神のみもとに行くことができるように、その道を備えてくれた人がいますか。そのような教祖がいましたか。いいえ、このことはイエス・キリストだけがなしたことなのです。
私達は今、どんな道を歩んでいるのでしょうか。その道の行きつくところをご存知ですか。自分の歩んでいる道すら見出さずにさ迷っているということはないですか。「わたしは道である。誰でもわたしによらなければ父なる神のもとに行くことはできない」と言われたイエス・キリストの言葉を心にとめ、そのことを探究してみませんか。
世界を見渡す時に私たちに必要なことは何なのでしょうか。自らの体を打ちたたいて自らを律することでしょうか。宗教的な報いを得るために出家することでしょうか。いいえ、私達に必要なのは私達の罪の問題がキリストの十字架によって解決され、はばかることなく神に近づくことができる道を歩みつづけることではないでしょうか。私達がその道を歩き始めた時に私達は新しい人生を歩みだすのです。お祈りしましょう。
“I Am the Way”

5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” 6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” (John 14:5-7)
In Japan, there is a “do”, or way, for almost everything. For example there is sado (way of tea), kendo (way of sword), judo (way of yielding), and kado (way of flowers); all of these arts and practices are described as a “way”. Throughout the ages, not only the Japanese but all people have been in search of a “way”. But as we just read, Jesus said that Jesus Himself is the way.
A Japanese poet once wrote, “Many paths lead from the foot of the mountain, but at the peak we all gaze at the single bright moon.” The poem says that there are many paths which lead to the top of the mountain, but the moon we see at the top is the same, and this has been interpreted to mean that although there are many religions, they all lead to the same end.
But contrary to this notion, what Jesus spoke of was His own exclusivity. Jesus said “I am the way” and even went so far as to say “No one comes to the Father except through me”. To those who believe that there is nothing absolute in this world, the words “except through me” are nothing but offensive to their ears. And they will let out a sigh and think to themselves, “How could He utter such bigotry?”
But is this really true? Do those who actually reach the mountain peak find that any path will lead them there, and that everyone will see the same moon? Is it not possible that perhaps one of the paths will lead to a peak where there are not one but three or four moons, or another path will lead to a peak with a green moon, or where there is a triangular moon instead of a round one?
So today, I would like for us to see what Jesus meant when He said “I am the way” and “no one comes to the Father except through me”.
The Bible describes the human condition in the following way: “25 For “you were like sheep going astray,” but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.” (1 Peter 2:25)
The Bible says that we are like sheep that have gone astray. But most of us will have a hard time trying to understand this. Many aren’t even aware of what it means to go astray. But from God’s perspective, which is different from ours, He sees us as sheep going astray.
The word “astray” describes our condition when we have wandered away and lost sight of the way we ought to be walking in. It is when we are not aware of which way we are walking in or even roaming where there is no way. And in this state, the question of whether to take a way or not may be irrelevant since we might have not even found a way to begin with.
In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, at the very end He created mankind. These first humans, Adam and Eve, lived in a place called the Garden of Eden and had a close relationship with God. But when they ate the forbidden fruit, from that moment fear and shame arose in their hearts. Before they ate the fruit, the nature that surrounded them was a source of blessing and they received its benefits abundantly, but from that moment that same nature became a source of pain and toil. And as if to flee from this garden, they went astray out into the world. Needless to say, when they went out there was no way or even a sign to follow, and they were indeed sheep gone astray in the world. And today we live as their descendants, and the Bible says that through God’s eyes, we are still like sheep going astray.
But the Bible also says that we still have a chance to find the way. The following words are written in Psalms regarding this:
“1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
his love endures forever.
2 Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story—
those he redeemed from the hand of the foe,
3 those he gathered from the lands,
from east and west, from north and south.
4 Some wandered in desert wastelands,
finding no way to a city where they could settle.
5 They were hungry and thirsty,
and their lives ebbed away.
6 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
and he delivered them from their distress.
7 He led them by a straight way
to a city where they could settle.
8 Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love
and his wonderful deeds for mankind” (Psalm 107:1-8).
The people described here wandered in the desert and their souls thirsted without being able to find a way to a city where they could settle. But in their distress they realized that they have gone astray and cried out to God in their trouble, so He heard their cry and led them by a way to the city where they could settle. As we see here, when we cry out to God and ask Him to show us the way, He draws us near to Him, to the place where we were meant to be. Jesus said that He is the way, and apart from Him, there is no other way that can lead us to God. But why is there no other way? The Bible gives us a clue in First Timothy:
“4 [God] wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:4-5).
It says that God wants all of us to be saved from our state of wandering and come to a knowledge of the truth. If we could apply the words of the psalm, God wants all of us who are wandering to find the way that leads to a city where we could settle. What both of these passages are saying is that God Himself desires for us to find Him. And it is written here that there is only one mediator between God and mankind that can make this happen, and that person is Jesus Christ. But what exactly does this mean, that Jesus is the mediator between God and mankind?
At night we look up and see the moon. We may jump a hundred, a thousand, or ten thousand times hoping to reach the moon, but there is no way that this will take us to the moon. In the same way, we can discipline ourselves through years of self-denial and training, but this could not lead us to God. It has been attempted by mankind since ancient times, but the truth is that we cannot get closer to God this way. Some people will even claim that through discipline and hard training a person can become a god. But the Bible says that there is nothing from our side that could take us closer to God.
In fact, the Bible tells us that God is so holy and far apart from us human beings. And as we see how finite we are in the light of God’s holiness, we become aware of the sin in our hearts, and realize that as sinful beings, we can’t even go near His holy presence.
But there is one thing that separates Christianity from all other religions. Though they may call it by different names, sin has been the focus of many of these world religions. It is recognized as the source of all evil thoughts and desires, and that which makes us turn these thoughts into actions and words. And many of these religions have sought a way to deal with this problem of sin. Countless religions have incorporated some kind of ritual in which they attempt to purify themselves. In fact we even see this in the Bible, where before Christ came, people were putting all their efforts in this kind of ritual. We see that the priests stood before God and sacrificed animals on behalf of the people to ask for the forgiveness of their sins. So much blood was spilled as they repeated these sacrifices day after day. But the writer of Hebrews said this regarding these sacrifices:
“11 Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins” (Hebrews 10:11).
As this kind of ritual is repeated day by day, it starts becoming a discipline for the people practicing it. But the Bible clearly states that these rituals and disciplines cannot take away our sins and that these practices can never get us closer to God. In other words, these rituals and disciplines are the same thing as repeatedly jumping to the sky, trying in vain to touch the moon. So then how can we go before God? The only way possible is written in Hebrews:
“12 But when this priest [Jesus Christ] had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13 and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool. 14 For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.
15 The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this. First he says:
16 “This is the covenant I will make with them
after that time, says the Lord.
I will put my laws in their hearts,
and I will write them on their minds.”
17 Then he adds:
“Their sins and lawless acts
I will remember no more.”
18 And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary.
19 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body…” (Hebrews 10:12-20)
Throughout history, people all over the world have been captivated by the idea of following a “way”. Whether it is sports or the arts, we are drawn by the depth that goes into pursuing these different ways. But these ways cannot lead us to the place that the Bible is referring to. Many religions teach that we can reach God if we keep walking along a certain way through our own self-discipline and endurance, but this can’t lead us to the place the Bible talks about either.
In other words, there is no discipline or anything within our power that can get us closer to God; much less anything we humans can offer to God in order to persuade Him into establishing a relationship with us. But Jesus Christ became the mediator between God and man by giving Himself as a sacrifice for all our sins and it is because of this that we can have an eternal relationship with God. When we establish this relationship with God through Christ, He declares, “their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more”, and from that moment we can truly say that we have found “the way” to the Father. Let me try to explain this a little further.
The Bible records that, before Christ came, there was a place where the people could go before God, but only up to a certain point. This place was called the “Most Holy Place”, which was a room within the Temple in Jerusalem. Only the high priest was allowed into this room once a year (Exodus 30:10, Hebrews 9:7), and it was the place where the high priest offered sacrifices for the sins of the entire nation of Israel and made intercession for the transgressions of the people.
During that time, God’s presence filled the Most Holy Place and it was such a sacred place that there had to be a curtain that separated it from the rest of the temple. The first-century Jewish historian Josephus records that this curtain was 80 feet high and 4 inches thick. It is recorded in Exodus that this curtain was made with blue, purple, and scarlet yarn. And this curtain was what separated God from mankind.
Because their sins separated them from God, the people could not go into this sacred room (Isaiah 59:1-2). If someone other than the high priest were to enter that room, they would be struck dead by the sheer holiness of God. This is why there needed to be a veil that separated God from mankind. But when Jesus went on the cross and gave up His spirit, an amazing thing happened in the Most Holy Place of the Temple. Matthew recorded this in his gospel: “50 And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. 51 At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom” (Matthew 27:50-51).
What does this event that happened 2000 years ago have to do with us living today? Notice how the curtain of the Temple in Jerusalem was not torn from bottom to top, but from top to bottom; this meant that it was God Himself who tore the curtain, to take away the veil that separated us from God, so that we can always draw near to Him through Christ. This is exactly what the passage from Hebrews is saying where it is written, “19 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body…” (Hebrews 10:19-20). This is how God opened the way for us to come before Him. Because Jesus became our mediator by being crucified on the cross to die for our sins, we can come before God with confidence through this new and living way that is opened for us. And this is what Jesus meant when He said “I am the way” and “no one comes to the Father except through me”.
There are many religious leaders that would tell us “you still lack discipline”. They will say to us “you must give more of your money and time”. But when we look around, could we find anyone who tore the curtain that separated us from God, who gave His life for us so that we can come before God with confidence? Were any of these so-called religious leaders able to do this? The answer is no, for Jesus Christ is the only one who accomplished this for us.
What is the “way” you are walking in today? Do you know where this way leads to? Or are you lost and wandering without even being able to find a way? If so, would you please consider putting your trust in Jesus and seek to find the truth of His words, “I am the way…no one comes to the Father except through me”?
As we look around the world today, what is it that we humans need? Is it to beat our bodies into obedience through self-discipline? Or is to go into a convent to receive some kind of religious merit? Is it not to have Jesus take away our sins through His cross and to draw near to God by abiding in the way He opened for us? When we begin to follow this way, our new life and walk with God begins. Let us pray.
