私がカリフォルニアに来ました１９年前、日本のスーパーに行きますとそこに置かれていた日本語の無料雑誌を全て家に持って帰り、隅々まで読みました。きっと日本語に飢えていたのでしょう。しかし、思い返せば今は当時のような日本語に対する飢え乾きはなくなりました。なぜならその後、インターネットの普及により、外国にいながら私達はいくらでも日本語に触れることができるからです。そうです、インターネットには言葉が満ち溢れており、こちらも口を通して入る食物と同じように、制限をつけないと溢れんばかりの情報で混乱してしまいそうです。そして、これだけ言葉が出回りますと、言葉の価値が失われてきているように感じるのです。しかし、聖書の言葉は今日もその価値を失うことはありません。失うどころかこの言葉によって今日も世界で無数の人たちがその言葉の中に真（まこと）を見出しているのです。

アモス：今もここにある飢饉

私達の多くは日本からやってきました。その日本には地続きの国境がありません。そんな国土が日本を長い間、外敵から守ってきました。しかし、多くの国には地続きの国境があります。時に敵国がこの国境を越えて他国を侵略するということがあり、そのようなことはこの世界において幾度も繰り返されてきました。そして、これらのことはこれからも起きかねないことで、近い将来、現在の世界地図が書き換えられるということがあるかもしれません。
これまで私達はイスラエルの初代の王、サウロから始まり、ダビデ、ソロモンによるイスラエルの統治について見てまいりました。この三人の王とて人間、色々な失敗を繰り返しました。同時に彼らと同時代のイスラエルの民の心も神から離れ、彼らを守り導き、祝福していた神の存在を脇に置き、各々がそれぞれ自分の思いのまま、欲のままに生きるようになりました。
ゆえに彼らは除々に力を失い、イスラエル王国は紀元前９３３年に南ユダ王国と北イスラエル王国に分裂し、北イスラエルは紀元前７２２年にアッシリアに、南ユダ王国は紀元前５８６年にバビロンによって滅ぼさます。そして言うまでもなく現在の世界地図にはアッシリアもバビロンもありません。これらの国もまた別の国によって滅ぼされたからです。
そのような時代に北イスラエルに生きた人にアモスという預言者がいました。今日はその預言者アモスとその時代のイスラエルの民の姿を見ていきたく願っています。ちょうど４月１３日から２１日まで教会の聖書通読表はこのアモス書で、毎日、このところから主の言葉を糧としていた方達もいることでしょう。
常に周辺の大国の存在によって脅威にさらされていた北イスラエルですが、アモスの時代はちょうどエジプトやアッシリアという大国が勢いを失っていた時で、その隙をぬってしばしの繁栄が築かれました。このように他国との関係によって、国に一時の繁栄が訪れるということ、その様はまさしく今日の世界と同じです。しかしながら、そのアモスの時代の繁栄の背後には心の荒廃、すなわち不正な裁判、弱者からの搾取、賄賂というような不正が横行していました。これらのことも昔と変わらず今もなくなることはありません。
そのような時にアモスは神様からその闇を明るみにし、これらのことゆえにイスラエルに裁きがなされるということを繰り返し民に向かい語りかけるように示され、彼はその言葉に従いイスラエルに向かって語り続けるのですが、彼らの心は変わらず、やがて北イスラエルはアッシリアの侵略を受けて、滅びていくのです。
エルサレムの１０マイル南にありますテコアという小さな村の出身であったアモスは、そこで羊を飼う「牧者のひとり」（１章１節）であり、「いちじく桑の木を作る」（７章１４節）農作業に従事する人でした。彼は資産家でも地主でもなく、また祭司でもなく、ただ雇われて羊を飼い、桑の木を育てる日雇いの農夫であったようです。そのような彼に神様は『行って、わが民イスラエルに預言せよ』（アモス７章１５節）と言われました。
私達がどこかの団体の一員となり、そこに長く在籍していますと色々なしがらみに縛られてきます。すなわち同じグループのメンバーの手前、自分が思っていることを言うことができなくなったりするのです。しかし、このアモスにはそのようなしがらみがなく、自分の言葉を聞いた人達がそれを聞いてどう思うとか、それにより他の人達との関係が悪くなるというようなことは一切、考えることなく、ただ神が彼に示されたことを大胆にはばかることなく語り続けることができたのです。彼は言っています「ししがほえる、誰が恐れないでいられよう。主なる神が語られる、誰が預言しないでいられよう」（アモス３章８節）。アモスはまさしく、孤高の獅子のように神から受けた言葉を語ったのです。
アモス書によりますと当時のイスラエルでは富める者が貧しいものから搾取して、己が繁栄を築くということがいたるところでなされており、ナジル人という神に仕えるために誓願をたてて禁欲的に生きていた者達に無理に酒を飲ませたり、神の言葉を取り次ぐ預言者に対しては「預言をするな」とそのはたらきを妨害していたといいます（アモス２章１２節）。また彼らはユダヤ民族ですから、彼らには先祖代々なされてきました安息日の取り決めがあり、その安息日には思いを神に向けて過ごすことが求められていました。しかし、彼らはその安息日の最中にありながら、心の中でこんなことを考えていました。『新月はいつ過ぎ去るだろう、そうしたら、穀物を売ろう。安息日はいつ過ぎ去るだろう。そうしたら、われわれは麦を売り出そう。われわれはエパを小さくし、シケルを大きくし、偽りのはかりをもって欺き、乏しい者を金で買い、貧しい者をくつ一足で買い取り、また、くず麦を売ろう』（アモス８章５節‐６節）
これを今日に当てはめて考えますのなら、私達が礼拝に出席しておりながら、その心を神に向ることなく、その最中、不正の商いについて考えていることであり、実際にその不正の商いによって繁栄を得ているということです。このようなことは人の目を騙すことはできますが、これら一切のことを神は存じておられ、アモスはその神様からの言葉を受けて、彼らに対する警告と裁きを語り続けたのです。
アモスは神からの言葉を受けてこう言いました。6主はこう言われる、「イスラエルの三つのとが、四つのとがのために、わたしはこれを罰してゆるさない。これは彼らが正しい者を金のために売り、貧しい者をくつ一足のために売るからである。7彼らは弱い者の頭を地のちりに踏みつけ、苦しむ者の道をまげ、また父子ともにひとりの女のところへ行って、わが聖なる名を汚す。8彼らはすべての祭壇のかたわらに質に取った衣服を敷いて、その上に伏し、罰金をもって得た酒を、その神の家で飲む」（アモス２章６節－８節）。
彼らは自分のしたい放題、聖なる場所さえも汚して、吹けば飛ぶような繁栄の上に身をおいている。しかし、時が来たらこのようなことが起こると主は彼らに語られたのです。
14速く走る者も逃げ場を失い、強い者もその力をふるうことができず、勇士もその命を救うことができない。15弓をとる者も立つことができず、足早の者も自分を救うことができず、馬に乗る者もその命を救うことができない。16勇士のうちの雄々しい心の者もその日には裸で逃げる」と主は言われる（アモス２章１４節－１６節）。
物事が全てうまくいっている時、私達は速く走れるから、強いから、力があるから、勇敢だから、弓を持っているから、足早だから、馬に乗るから、雄々しい心を持っているから大丈夫と思います。しかし、それらのものがどんなに頼りないものであるかということがここには記されています。そう、主と共に歩む信仰はある意味、このことの自覚から始まるのです。「全てのことはこの自分の手にかかっている」ということは勇ましい言葉です。しかし、それはいかほどのものでしょうか。少し状況が変われば、これらのものはいとも簡単に失われていくのです。
しかし、それでも彼らは主の言葉に耳を貸すことなく、その言葉は紀元前７２２年のアッシリアによるイスラエルの滅びによって成就しました。そして、そのことがいよいよイスラエルに臨む時に、ある飢饉がイスラエルの民達を襲うだろうとアモスはこう預言しました。
11主なる神は言われる、「見よ、わたしがききんをこの国に送る日が来る、それはパンのききんではない、水にかわくのでもない、主の言葉を聞くことのききんである。12彼らは海から海へさまよい歩き、主の言葉を求めて、こなたかなたへはせまわる、しかしこれを得ないであろう。その日には美しいおとめも、若い男もかわきのために気を失う。（アモス８章１１節－１２節）。
彼らが所持していたものが失われる時、すなわち、彼らが力を失う時、と言いますか、そもそも人のもつ力というものはたかがしておりまして、己（おのれ）の無力について本当の理解に至ります時に私達は心に渇きをもちます。そして、その渇きとは神の言葉を聞くという飢饉だと聖書は言うのです。
この言葉はイスラエルの民に向けられた言葉ではありますが、そのまま今を生きる私達にも当てはまります。今日、私達は世界の他国に比べるなら豊かな国に暮らしています。家の食物は今朝でなくなり、今晩から食べるものが全くないというような方はいませんでしょう。いいえ、かえって私達は今日、食べる量を減らさなければならないほどに飢えからは程遠い世界に暮らしています。そのような意味で私達は現在、飢饉の中にはいません。しかし、たとえ私達の胃袋は満たされていても、私達は主の言葉を聞くことの飢饉のただなかにいるのだとこの言葉は私達に語りかけます。

イエス・キリストはかつて御霊に導かれて一人、荒野に行かれ、四十日四十夜、そこで食を断ち過ごしました。当然、イエス様は空腹を覚えられました。その時にサタンが近づいて来て「あなたが神の子なら、この石がパンになるように命じなさい」と言ってイエス様を試みたと聖書は記しています。イエス様はこの試みに対して「『人はパンだけで生きるのではなく、神の口から出る一つ一つのことばによる』と書いてある」とこのサタンの試みを退けられました。
そして、このイエス様の言葉にはある背景がありました。この時からさかのぼるところ約１４００年前、エジプトで奴隷の状態であった数百万にもおよぶイスラエルの民は、エジプトを脱出してから４０年もの間、荒野を放浪しました。そして、その４０年が終わり、一つ所に彼らが定住するようになった時、その民のリーダーであったモーセは荒野での年月を振り返ってイスラエルの民のために神が毎朝、天から降らせてくださった食物について語りました。
2あなたの神、主がこの四十年の間、荒野であなたを導かれたそのすべての道を覚えなければならない。それはあなたを苦しめて、あなたを試み、あなたの心のうちを知り、あなたがその命令を守るか、どうかを知るためであった。3それで主はあなたを苦しめ、あなたを飢えさせ、あなたも知らず、あなたの先祖たちも知らなかったマナをもって、あなたを養われた。人はパンだけでは生きず、人は主の口から出るすべてのことばによって生きることをあなたに知らせるためであった。（申命記８章２節－３節）。
皆さん、想像してみてください。私達の家々に毎朝、空から食物が降ってくるということを。その食物には私達の肉体に必要な栄養が十分に含まれており、それを食べている限り私達は飢えることなく、普通に生きながらえることができたとしたら。しかしながら、ここで多くの私達が思うことは毎日、同じものを食べ続けることは嫌だなということで、実際に同じことをこの時のイスラエルの民達も不満として言い続けました。しかし、彼らは大切なことを忘れていました。その時に彼らが置かれていた場所は周囲数十マイル、人が食べることがものなど何もない荒野で、しかもそれは五人家族の話ではなく、数百万におよぶ民が、そこで毎食の食物を得ることは不可能なことだったということです。そのような場所におりながら、働かずとも与えられる食物は本来、彼らにとってどんなに大きな祝福であったことでしょうか。
そのようなありがたいことが彼らには起きていたのですが、不思議なことにこの申命記は神は「あなたの先祖たちも知らなかったマナをもって、あなたを養われた」と書き、それは「人はパンだけでは生きず、人は主の口から出るすべての言葉によって生きることをあなたたたちに知らせるためであった」と言っているのです。なぜなら、お話ししましたように彼らは毎日、無償で与えられるマナによって決して満たされることなく、このマナに対して不平不満を神様に向かって言い続けたと聖書は記しているからです。
そうです、この彼らの心によって、人間はただ必要が十分に与えられていればいいという存在ではないということが明らかになったのです。そうです、食べるものが満たされていればそれで人間はいいかというと、そのことだけでは人の心は本当に満たされることはないのです。この現象は私達の世界でもいたるところで見ることができることでしょう。いいえ、私達が自分の心に手を当ててみれば、まさしく彼らの心は私達の心なのです。
この言葉をイエス様が申命記から引用した時、イエス様の荒野での４０日の間に天からマナが降ることは一日もありませんでした。故にイエス様は極度の空腹の中におりました。しかし、イエス様はそのような状況の中に身を置きながらもこの真理を理解し、その言葉をもってサタンの試みをはね返したのです。
この申命記の言葉は人がその肉体のために糧を十分に得たとしても、それだけで人間は生きていくのではないということが、４０年かけて数百万数もの人間に対してなされたことによって明らかにされたという証言なのです。そうです、人はそもそも肉の糧で満たされるように創られているのではなく、神の口から出る言葉によって生きるようにできているということです。
詩篇は『1 もろもろの天は神の栄光をあらわし、大空はみ手のわざをしめす。2 この日は言葉をかの日につたえ、この夜は知識をかの夜につげる。3 話すことなく、語ることなく、その声も聞えないのに、4 その響きは全地にあまねく、その言葉は世界のはてにまで及ぶ』（詩篇１９篇１節‐４節）と記しています。神の言葉は既にこの世界に満ちています。私達が天を見上げる時、この世界は神の言葉によって創造されたもので満ちています。そして、それはすなわち神の言葉がこの全地に満ちていることを意味しているのです。私達は神の言葉に取り囲まれており、その神の言葉を聞くことにより本当の意味で私達は生きることができると聖書は語り続けているのです。
もし、皆さんの中に自分の日々の暮らしに必要なものは全て満たされている、しかし、何かが足りないと感じている方がいましたら、その足りないものをあれやこれやと色々なことで満たそうとしてきたけれど、どれもこれもそこにはいたらなかったと思われている方がおりますのなら、それはとても健全なことです。また、これまで寄り頼んでいたものが失われ、そのはかなさを今、しみじみと感じているという方がおりましたら、それはその方にとって最重要なことを知ることができるチャンスです。そのような方達にこのアモス書の言葉を今朝、お送りしたいのです。『あなたの神に会う備えをせよ』（アモス４章１２節）。『あなたがたはわたしを求めよ。そして生きよ』（アモス５章４節）。
今日（こんにち）私達が生きている時代はイスラエルが裁きの宣告を受けた時と同じような様相をしています。私達を取り巻く世の言葉は彼らの何千倍となりますでしょう。しかし、それであっても今も神様の言葉を聞く飢饉がこの世界をおおっています。世の言葉は私達を取り囲み、私達の間をすりぬけていきます。有り余るほどの食にありつき、限りなく便利な時代に生きながら、私達の心は安んじているのか、満たされているのか、いいえ、私達の心はさらにさらに渇きを感じているように思うのは私だけでしょうか。私達はその渇きを満たすためにあれか、これかと日々、奔走しているのではないでしょうか。
最初に私はイスラエル王国は紀元前９３３年に南ユダ王国と北イスラエル王国に分裂し、北イスラエルは紀元前７２２年にアッシリアに、南ユダ王国は紀元前５８６年にバビロンによって滅ぼされ、現在の世界地図にはこのアッシリアもバビロンもないとお話ししました。なぜなら、これらの国もまた別の国によって滅ぼされたからです。
しかし、イスラエルに関して言えば、彼らは二つに分かたれた南ユダ王国のユダヤ人が紀元前５３６年にバビロンの捕囚からエルサレムに帰還し、かつての場所に再度、彼らの国を再建します。しかし紀元７０年、ローマによってエルサレムは再び陥落し、彼らは以降、世界に離散していきます。しかし、それから１９００年後、すなわち１９４８年５月１４日、ユダヤ民族はかつて先祖たちが生きた土地に戻り、国を再建するのです。国が起こり、消えていくということを常としてきた人類史の中で１９００年もの年月を経て、同じ場所に国が再び建国されたといことは、言うまでもなくこのイスラエル以外にはないのです。しかも、彼らは世界中に散らされていながらも、その先祖がもち続けた言語と信仰を保ち続け、それらを持ってかつての土地に帰ってきたのです。神はいないということであるのなら、私達はまず、このユダヤ人の歴史に起きた全てのことを「神」という言葉を使わずに説明しなければなりません。
しかし、私達はこのようなことを聞いても驚かないのです。アモス書は一章から八章までイスラエルの罪を非難、警告し、彼らが滅亡するということを預言しています。しかし、この書はその一番最後の九章をこの言葉をもって閉じていくからです。
13主は言われる、「見よ、このような時が来る。その時には、耕す者は刈る者に相継ぎ、ぶどうを踏む者は種まく者に相継ぐ。もろもろの山にはうまい酒がしたたり、もろもろの丘は溶けて流れる。14わたしはわが民イスラエルの幸福をもとに返す。彼らは荒れた町々を建てて住み、ぶどう畑を作ってその酒を飲み、園を作ってその実を食べる。15わたしは彼らをその地に植えつける。彼らはわたしが与えた地から再び抜きとられることはない」とあなたの神、主は言われる（アモス９章８節―１５節）。
アモスが実際に向き合い、神の言葉を語り続けました北イスラエルのユダヤの１０部族はその後、回復されることなく、失われてしまいました。しかし、先ほどお話ししましたように、もう一方のバビロンに捕囚として連れていかれた南ユダの二部族は捕囚からの解放によりこの地に残り、エルサレムに帰還します。このアモスの九章の預言はそのバビロンから解放されたイスラエルの二部族の帰還とその後の再建をあらわしていると言われていますが、ここから私達が分かりますことは、この主の御目はその再建以降も、確かにイスラエルの上に注がれ続き、その主の御手のわざにより、今日もイスラエルという国がこの地上に存在し続けているのです。その存在自体が人類の奇跡なのです。
確かにイスラエルは自らが成したことゆえに、神から罰を受けます。しかし、この世界の真の支配者はそのイスラエルを決して忘れることはありません。実際、その言葉どおりのことがこの世界で私達の前に起きているのですから私達はこの神の言葉を否定することはできないのです。私達が語り継いでる言葉とはこの神の言葉であり、この言葉だけが私達の心を満たし、私達の生きる道を指し示すものなのです。
皆さんの人生、何に土台を置き、何に委ねておりますか。言うまでもありませんでしょう、私達に必要なのは、この全能者なる神の言葉なのです。今こそ、この世界にあって私達はこの神の言葉を聞くべきなのです。主にある皆さん、この朝、もう一度、この主の言葉に聞き従うという再献身をしませんか。これからの人生の土台を探し求めている方がおりましたら、この神の言葉をその土台となさいませんか。お祈りしましょう。
アモス：今もここにある飢饉

Many of us came here from Japan, and it is bordered by water on all sides, unlike many other countries. This terrain has protected Japan from outsiders for a long time, while many other countries have borders that adjoin with other countries. Sometimes enemies will come to invade the other countries that are beyond their land and borders, and such events have happened time and time again in this world. These events could happen at any time and our world map could be changed once again in the near future.
We’ve looked at how the first Israel kings, Saul; David; and Solomon ruled Israel. These three were the kings of Israel, but even with that status they were still human, and they made various mistakes. At the same time the heart of Israel’s people wondered far from God. Even though God had protected, led, and blessed the Israeli for such a long time, they stopped following God teachings and started to follow their own desires and lived egotistically.
Therefore they gradually lost their strength and in 933BC the kingdom of Israel was split in two, the kingdom of Judah to the south and the Northern kingdom of Israel. The Northern kingdom of Israel was overthrown by the Assyrians in 722BC and the kingdom of Judah was overthrown by Babylonians. However we can’t find Assyria or Babylon on our current maps. Needless to say these countries were overthrown by some other countries.
There was a prophet, named Amos, who lived in this period in Northern Israel. I would like to focus on this prophet and the Israeli people who were involved at this time. From April 13th to the 21st, in our daily bible reading material, we were also covering Amos; therefore some people might have read and learned about Amos just recently.
The kingdom of Northern Israel was threatened by the surrounding larger countries. Within this period in which Amos had lived was a short time of prosperity for the kingdoms, because during this period some of the powerful countries such as Egypt and Assyria had lost their power. These power struggles happen because of relationships between the countries; it can bring about prosperity or poverty, always wavering between the two; and this is true for countries of today as well. The things that destroy the moral fibers of people, such as unjust trials, exploitation of the w eak, or even bribery were prevalent during this period of prosperity. This is also very much too how it is now.
The words of God fell to Amos repeatedly instructing him to give a prophecy to the people of Israel. This prophecy stated that because of their ill conducts the Northern Kingdom of Israel was going to be judged for breaking God’s laws. Amos spread these words of God to the Israeli, but they never corrected their conduct. After this the Kingdom of Northern Israel was invaded by Assyria and fell.
The prophet Amos was from the city of Tekoa, which was a small village 10 miles south of Jerusalem. He was “one of the shepherds” (Amos 1-1) and he was also the person who takes care of sycamore-fig trees. (Amos 7-14) He was not a landowner, nor a Rabbi; he was just a daily employment farmer. However God chose him and said ‘Go, prophesize to my people in Israel.’ (Amos 7-15)
Once we belong to or become a member of some form of group, party, or organizations for a long time, we tend to get tied up by various relations. We tend to hesitate when speaking out, especially when saying our honest opinions among the other members in the group. Amos however didn’t have such factors to concern him. He didn’t care what other people thought about his prophesy, he didn’t care that this prophesy might tangle up or destroy his relations with others. He was able to keep passing on God’s words without hesitation. He said. The lion has roared. Who will not fear? The Sovereign Lord has spoken. Who can but prophesy? (Amos 3:8) Amos, as he said, prophesized God words like a solitary Lion.
From Book of Amos, it is said that they gained their wealth from the poor. The Israeli forced the Nazirites to drink wine, who tried to abstain from such things, and they commanded the prophets not to prophesize. (Amos 2-12) As Jews they had to keep the practice of the Sabbath which was passed down from generation to generation, and during the Sabbath the Jews would spend the day only worshipping God. Sadly their minds were occupied with things like: “When will the New Moon be over that we may sell grain, and the Sabbath be ended that we may market wheat?”—skimping on the measure, boosting the price and cheating with dishonest scales, buying the poor with silver and the needy for a pair of sandals, selling even the sweepings with the wheat. ( Amos 8: 5~6)
Let me see if I can apply this to our current lives. For example, when we are attending the service, sometimes we are not actually worshipping God. Our minds are wondering and calculating what we can gain by dishonest means, and then we go out and practice these thoughts after we leave service. Those people might be able to deceive humans but not God. He knows everything. That is why Amos received His words, to warn the Jews and to condemn them. He prophesized to them and this is what the Lord said:
“For three sins of Israel, even for four, I will not relent. They sell the innocent for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals. 7 They trample on the heads of the poor as on the dust of the ground and deny justice to the oppressed. Father and son use the same girl and so profane my holy name. 8 They lie down beside every altar on garments taken in pledge. In the house of their god they drink wine taken as fines. (Amos 2:6~8)
They did what they wanted, without control and desecrated the holy place. To those people who valued the fleeting prosperity of the world, God spoke; of the coming time they will see things for what they are.
“The swift will not escape, the strong will not muster their strength, and the warrior will not save his life.15 The archer will not stand his ground, the fleet-footed soldier will not get away, and the oarsman will not save his life.16 Even the bravest warriors will flee naked on that day”, declares the Lord. (Amos 2;14~16)
When everything is going well people may start to think like this, because we are fast, strong, powerful, courageous, and well equipped we are prosperous. However in this passage it said those things are neither reliable nor permanent at all. Being aware of this makes us realize that we can’t go on without faith in God. “Everything depends on my ability” that is very bold statement, but is it really? If your circumstances shift and shake a little, your boldness, confidence, and comfort can easily disappear. The people of Israel never listened or accepted God words. His words were fulfilled in 722 BC when their kingdom was overtaken by the Assyrians. When the day draws near to Israel, Amos also prophesized that a certain famine would attack Israel.
“The days are coming,” declares the Sovereign Lord, “when I will send a famine through the land—
not a famine of food or a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the words of the Lord.12 People will stagger from sea to sea and wander from north to east, searching for the word of the Lord, but they will not find it.13 “In that day” the lovely young women and strong young men will faint because of thirst.
When their possessions were gone, that is to say, when they lost their strength, then they would realize how powerless they were. This recognition makes the human soul thirsty. There is no way that our souls will be quenched without the word of God and this is the thirst and famine which the bible is indicating.
These words were given to not only the Israeli but to us who are living in present time. Today we are living in one of the wealthiest countries in the world. I don’t think anyone here is saying that this morning’s breakfast will be my last meal and that I have nothing to eat tonight. Conversely, today our society is far from famine and we restrain our consumption of food for our health. However, even though our bellies are full and satisfied, we are in hunger for the words of God, this is what the bible passage is talking about.
I came to California 19 years ago. When I went shopping to the Japanese market I took all the various free Japanese magazines home and read them thoroughly. I guess I was hungry for my native language. Now that I think of it and I realize that I no longer feel such hunger for Japanese. The reason for this is the widespread use of the Internet. We can be exposed to our own language as much as we want even when we are outside of our country. It is true that words and information pour out from any internet site, and if we aren’t careful we can start to confuse ourselves. Just like when you watch what you eat you have to watch what you read. Because so many peoples share their free thoughts around us, I am starting to feel that some words are losing their real value and purpose. However, the words of the Bible will never lose value. Far from losing, the words of the Bible are helping numerous people around the world, and are finding the truth every day.
Jesus Christ was once led to the wilderness by the Holy Spirit and there He fasted there for 40 days and nights. Jesus felt a great hunger afterwards. The bible said that Satan tempted to Jesus by saying “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Jesus expelled Satan’s temptation by saying this “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
There are some deep meanings in these words that Jesus spoke. 1400 years before Jesus had said these words several million of Israelites, who were slaves in Egypt, escaped from the Egyptian lands and roamed in the wilderness for 40 years. After these 40 years they finally settled down in one place. At that time Moses, who was the leader of all the people, looked back on the life they had spent wandering in the wilderness. He spoke to them about the food that God had provided for them every morning from the heavens.
Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. 3 He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. (Deuteronomy 8:2~3)
Please imagine that this is our life. What if food fell down from the sky every morning to our homes? The perfect food that contains all the necessary nutrition for humans to sustain their bodies and as long as we eat the food we could live without starving. Many of us probably think that it must be tough eating same food every single day. Actually those Israelites complained about this very reason again and again. However there were miles and miles of barren land all around them. It was impossible to obtain any food, not even for a single family of five, not to mention the other several million Israelites every day. This everyday meal was a great blessing for them.
This passage here “then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.” is very interesting. Because the Bible says that the people were not satisfied with this, every day free food fell from the skies, and yet they kept complaining to God about this Manna.
This means, that human being are not creatures who are simply satisfied with only meeting the necessities. It is true that, human souls are not filled just when their bellies are full. We see this phenomenon everywhere in the world. Just listen to your heart and you will see that their thoughts are the same as ours.
When Jesus referenced these words from Deuteronomy during his 40 days in the wilderness, the miracle food of manna never fell from the sky for him. Although Jesus felt severe hunger he understood the truth of these words and rejected Satan’s temptation because of these words.
These words from Deuteronomy are the testimony that was made clear by the several millions Israelites who took the 40 years journey. Humans were not created to be fulfilled by just physical nourishment, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.
(Psalm 19 1~4) The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
2 Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they reveal knowledge.
3 They have no speech, they use no words;
no sound is heard from them.
4 Yet their voice[b] goes out into all the earth,
their words to the ends of the world.
In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun.
The words of God’s have already spread to the ends of the world. When we look up to the heavens we see all of God’s creation, which were created by his words. The meaning of this is that the world is filled with God’s word. The Bible is telling us, that by listening to God we are truly living through and through.
If there is someone here today who feels emptiness, even if you know that you have everything you need, and have tried to fill this emptiness with various things, but everything you’ve tried has failed to fill you, know that this is normal. If there is someone who has lost something that you were relying on and now you feel that everything around you is frail, know that this is ok. I would tell you that this is a great chance for you to learn some great information from the book of Amos. “prepare to meet your God.” (Amos 4:12) “Seek me and live; (Amos 5:4)
Today, our world has a lot of the same aspects that Israel had before receiving a sentence of judgment. Even though, the world that surrounds us now has a thousand times more secular words than before, we are also surrounded in a famine for the words of God. These secular words are surrounding us and are passing between us. We take more than enough food and chase the convenient life endlessly. Are our hearts filled with comfort? No, I think our hearts are feeling the thirst more and more. Are we making every effort to look for a solution to quench this thirst?
As I mentioned in the beginning of this sermon, in 933 BC the kingdom of Israel was split into two, the kingdom of Judah to the south and the Northern kingdom of Israel. The Northern kingdom of Israel was overthrown by the Assyrians in 721 BC and the kingdom of Judah was overthrown by Babylonians in 586 BC. Then I said that there is no Assyria or Babylon on our current maps, because these countries were overthrown by other countries.
However speaking of Israel, the Jews in the Kingdom of Judah returned to Jerusalem from Babylonian captivity in 536 BC, and rebuilt their country once again in the same place. But in 70 AD, Jerusalem fell once again to Rome, and they were later dispersed around the world. Then, 1900 years later, on May 14, 1948, the Jewish people returned to the lands of their ancestors and rebuilt their country. Needless to say there is no other country like Israel, a country that was founded again in the same place after 1,900 years. Besides this, while they were scattered throughout the world, they kept the same language and faith that their ancestors had kept. If there is no God, can we explain everything that has happened in the Jewish history without using the word “God”?
However we as believers are not surprised by hearing this fact. In the book of Amos 1 to 8, Amos reproaches the Israelites sins and warns them by prophesizing that they will be destroyed. However the book of Amos closes with this passage on the 9th chapter.
“The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when the reaper will be overtaken by the plowman and the planter by the one treading grapes. New wine will drip from the mountains and flow from all the hills, and I will bring my people Israel back from exile. “They will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them. They will plant vineyards and drink their wine; they will make gardens and eat their fruit. I will plant Israel in their own land, never again to be uprooted from the land I have given them,” says the Lord your God.
The 10 tribes in the Kingdom of Israel which Amos had given his prophesies to, were gone without recovery. But the two tribes in South Judah that were brought to Babylon as captives were returned to Jerusalem after being released from this captivity. It was said this last prophecy of Amos is represented by the release of the two tribes from Babylon and their return to Israel, along with the subsequent rebuilding of Israel. What we can see from this, is that the eyes of God still continue to watch over Israel, even after its reconstruction the work of the Lord’s hand keeps this country of Israel on this earth till this day. Its existent is miracle of mankind.
Certainly Israel was punished by God because of what they did, however the true Ruler of this world will never forget Israel. We cannot deny these words of God, as it is happening in front of us. The words we should pass down are the words of God; only these words fulfill our hearts and points in the way for which we should live our lives.
What is the foundation for your life? What should you rely on? I should not need to say, “What we need is the word of the God almighty”. Now is the time, we should listen to the words of God. Brothers and sisters, this morning, why don’t we dedicate ourselves to listening to the words of the Lord again? If anyone is looking for the foundation of life, you can find it in the word of God.
