ハワイ島には富士山よりも高い、４０００メートルを超える山が二つあります。一つはマウナケアで４２０５メートル、もう一つはマウナロアで４１７０メートルあり、冬にはこれらの山の山頂には雪が降ることがあります。マウナケアの山頂には人工的な明かりが届かず、年間を通して空気が澄みわたり、３００日もの間、天体観測ができる天候だということで、単一鏡としては世界一大きな日本の「すばる」という巨大な望遠鏡もあるのです。私は星について詳しくありませんが、満点の星空を眺めることは大好きです。ですから、しっかりと説明を受けたいと思い、マウナケアの天体観測ツアーに妻と参加しました。
当日、麓から見上げるマウナケアは灰色の厚い雨雲に覆われており、その姿が全く見えませんでした。その雲を見上げた他のツアー客からは「こりゃ今日はだめだ。楽しみにしていたのに残念」という声が聞こえてきました。私もいくらなんでも、この厚い雲では星なんか見えないだろう。ツアーはキャンセルだろうと思っていました。しかし、ガイドさんが心配している様子はなく、彼は山でどのように天体観測するのかを私たちに説明しているのです。その話を聞いていて、分かったことがあります。何だかお分かりになりますか？
私達はこれから、その雲の上に行くのです！
確かに私達は山頂に向かう途中、霧に包まれたような雲の中を通りました。まさしく数メートル先も見えないような状況です。しかし、それを抜けると、私たちの前に満点の星空が広がったのです！（大倉）

ザカリヤ＆エリサベツ：雨雲の先に輝く星

先週は本多先生が敬老の日に即したメッセージをお話ししてくれました。既にお伝えしておりますように、今日からは新約聖書に記録されている人物について見ていきたいと思います。
新約聖書にはイエス・キリストの誕生以降のことが書かれており、その冒頭にはマタイ、マルコ、ルカ、ヨハネが書いた福音書があります。彼らは各々の視点でイエス・キリストについて、その言動を記録しました。その一人、ルカは「ルカによる福音書」をこのように書き始めました。
ルカ１章１節—４節 1 わたしたちの間に成就された出来事を、最初から親しく見た人々であって、2 御言に仕えた人々が伝えたとおり物語に書き連ねようと、多くの人が手を着けましたが、3 テオピロ閣下よ、わたしもすべての事を初めから詳しく調べていますので、ここに、それを順序正しく書きつづって、閣下に献じることにしました。4 すでにお聞きになっている事が確実であることを、これによって十分に知っていただきたいためであります。
ルカは医者だと言われています。医者は客観的に患者の体を診察し、そこに隠されている病理を見出そうとします。その賜物を有するルカは「妄想」や「創作」に目を向けずに「事実」に目を向ける人だということがここから分かります。ルカは主観や願望ではなくて、物事を初めから詳しく調べ、それを順序正しく書き連ねたのです。そして、それはこれから自分が書き記すことが、創作ではなく実際に起きたことだということを知ってもらうためだというのです。
彼が「はじめから調べた」ということは、彼が天地創造から始まるユダヤ民族に関する旧約聖書の記録をも全て事細かに調べたということでありましょう。彼はそこに天地創造から始まったイスラエル民族に起きた出来事の順番や関連性を見出し、神様のご計画に目が開かれたことでしょう。そして、これらの序論のすぐ後にルカは、今日、私たちが見ていく、ある夫婦について言及しているのです。
ルカ１章５節—７節 5 ユダヤの王ヘロデの世に、アビヤの組の祭司で名をザカリヤという者がいた。その妻はアロン家の娘のひとりで、名をエリサベツといった。6 ふたりとも神のみまえに正しい人であって、主の戒めと定めとを、みな落度なく行っていた。7 ところが、エリサベツは不妊の女であったため、彼らには子がなく、そしてふたりともすでに年老いていた。
ザカリヤは祭司であり、彼にはモーセの兄であったアロンの血を継ぐエリサベツという妻がいました。彼らは神の前に真実に生きていた人であったのですが、彼らには子がなく、高齢であったというのです。彼らの年齢は身体的に子供を産むことができる時を過ぎていました。その彼らに御使いが現れ、こう告げます。
ルカ１章１３節 「恐れるな、ザカリヤよ、あなたの祈が聞きいれられたのだ。あなたの妻エリサベツは男の子を産むであろう。その子をヨハネと名づけなさい」
このザカリヤとエリサベツに関することは、ルカだけが記録を残しており、他の福音書の記者は彼らのことを記録していません。先にルカは「すべてのことを初めから詳しく調べている」と言いましたが、彼がこの夫婦について書き記す時、彼の心には別の夫婦の姿もあったに違いありません。
そう、それは旧約聖書、創世記に記録されているアブラハムとサラです。この夫婦も高齢であり、彼らにも子供がいませんでした。しかし、神はこの夫婦に子を与えると約束し、その言葉どおりに彼らにはイサクという息子が生まれます。その時、アブラハムは１００歳、サラは９０歳でした。このアブラハムからユダヤ民族は始まり、そのユダヤ民族と神との出来事について旧約聖書は書かれているのです。
今日、私達は思います。互いに９０歳を超えるような夫婦に子供が産まれるということは絶対にあり得ない。その「ありえない理由」を医者は生理学的に説明できることでしょう。医師であるルカは、しかしこの「あり得ないこと」を、その冒頭に書き残したのです。
主にある皆さん、旧約聖書も新約聖書も我々人間の考えをはるかに超えた出来事から始まっているということに注目しましょう。読者の心を掴むことを考えたら、このことはリスクを伴うことです。なぜなら、我々はこのようなことを読みますと躓くからです。聖書の言葉に心を閉ざしてしまうからです。
しかし、それでも聖書はこのように「私達には理解できないこと」を、淡々と書き連ねています。このことから分かることは、聖書はそもそも最初から私達に理解を求めてはいないということです。なぜ？答えはシンプルです。
なぜなら、聖書は「神」がこの世界に介入したことを記録する書物だからです。私たちには躓きにしか思えないことも、神の側から見れば、それは特段に騒ぎ立てることではなく、当たり前のことなのです。主にある皆さん、それが「神」の神たる所以です。
しかし、そうは言っても私たちには、このことは受け入れ難いのです。私たちは目に見えるもの、耳に聞こえるもの、手に触れるものにより、そのことが実在しているか否かを決めます。当時の人々がアブラハム夫妻、ザカリヤ夫妻を見るときに、誰が見ても彼らの姿は老人であったことでしょう。
高齢になった彼らの肉体は若い時のそれとは異なり、その肉体の機能はかつてとは明らかに異なります。ですから私達は、その肉体から新しい命が生み出されることなどはないと理解します。そんなことは私達には到底、受け入れられない話なのです。
そして、それは実際のところ、そのことを告げられた当事者たちもそうでした。その時、アブラハムもサラも「子が与えられる」という神や御使いの言葉を笑ったと聖書は記録しています（創世記１７章１７節、１８章１２節）。時を経て、ザカリヤも彼に子が与えられるという御使いの約束に対して、こう言います。
ルカ１章１８節 「どうしてそんな事が、わたしにわかるでしょうか。わたしは老人ですし、妻も年をとっています」
このザカリヤの疑いゆえに、神は彼から話す力を取り上げ、彼は約束の子が生まれるまで言葉が話せなくなりました。これらの二組の夫婦に子が与えられるということ、このことで既に我々の躓きは十分であるのに、それに加えてルカは追い討ちをかけます。ルカがこの後に記しているイエス・キリストの誕生は、皆さんご存知のように、処女マリヤにイエスが宿ったという話です。
私たちは思います「ルカはまた、こんなことを書いているのか！」「聖書の言葉は素晴らしい。聖書の言葉は最高峰の倫理と呼ばれるものだろう」という人達はこの世界にたくさんいます。しかし、それがイエス様の「処女降誕」や「復活」の話になると、皆、背を向けて、教会から立ち去っていくのです（今日、そのような方達がいないことを願います）。皆さんの中にもこのことに引っかかっている方、いませんか？
今月はじめ、ハワイのホノルルで教団総会がもたれました。その後、休暇をいただき、妻とビッグアイランドと呼ばれるハワイ島に行きました。ビッグアイランドはその名のとおり、大きな島で、その面積は日本の四国以上になります。そして、その島には富士山よりも高い、４０００メートルを超える山が二つあります。一つはマウナケアで４２０５メートル（１３８００フィート）、もう一つはマウナロアで４１７０メートル（１３６７９フィート）あり、冬にはこれらの山の山頂には雪が降ることがあります。

確かに私達は山頂に向かう途中、霧に包まれたような雲の中を通りました。まさしく数メートル先も見えないような状況です。しかし、それを抜けると、私たちの前に満点の星空が広がったのです！その夜空には天の川があり、夏から秋にかけて見ることができる星座がひしめきあい、さすがプロ、ガイドさんは次から次へと、星座について話してくれます。そして、彼はそれらの星が地球からどれくらいの距離があるかということに何度も言及します。この星は地球から「５０光年離れています」とか、「あっちは４００光年です」というのです。
一光年とは光が一年かけて進む距離であり、その距離は９兆４６００億キロ（５兆９１２５億マイル）となります。この距離は停止することなく毎日２４時間、時速３００キロ（１８７マイル）の新幹線で走って、３６１万年かかる距離です。それが一光年の距離です。
ガイドさんはその距離の４００倍あるところに（3,784,000,000,000,000キロ、2,365,000,000,000,000マイル）、今、見ている星がありますというのです。そこに行くためには新幹線で１４億４４００万年かかるのです。ちなみに私たちの後ろに写っているボヤッとした天の川までは１０万光年あり、この星の２５０倍の距離があるあるそうです（写真２）。
「ロスまで１２０マイルです。ドライブが大変です」なんてことを言っている私達にその距離の実感はありません。理解不能です。当然、その星がどんなかたちをしており、どんな鉱物で出来上がっているのかなんてことは私たちには分からないのです。
しかし、その星がそこにあり、光っている限り、それがどんなに遠くにあるものであっても、その星の存在を否定することはできないのです。皆さん、宇宙にはこのような星が何兆個もあるというのです。
ガイドさんは望遠鏡を持参してきており、私たちにある星の一群を見せてくれました。その星は肉眼ではボヤッとしていて見えないのです。しかし、望遠鏡からそこを覗いてみると、そこには確かに光を放つ無数の星があるのです。
サンディエゴでも私達が夜空を見上げる時、そこに幾つかの星を認めることができます。しかし、実際には私たちの目には見えない数十億、いや、まさしく無限に近い星がそこには存在しているのです。このような壮大な話になりますと人間なんて本当にちっぽけなものです。私達にとって、全てである人生は一度の瞬きで終わるようなものです。しかし、その星は昔も今も変わらず、秩序正しく、夜空に輝いているのです。そして、その宇宙の星に秩序を与え、それを維持している存在を私たちは「神」と呼んでいるのです。
詩篇１４７篇４節、５節 4 主はもろもろの星の数を定め、すべてそれに名を与えられる。5 われらの主は大いなる神、力も豊かであって、その知恵ははかりがたい。
イザヤ４０章２６節 目を高くあげて、だれが、これらのものを創造したかを見よ。主は数をしらべて万軍をひきいだし、おのおのをその名で呼ばれる。その勢いの大いなるにより、またその力の強きがゆえに、一つも欠けることはない。
この度、天の川を望遠鏡で覗き込んだ私の前に広がる無数の星が、あるものに似ていることに私は気がつきました。そう、それは私たちの体内に存在している細胞です。
神は壮大な宇宙を支配し、また同時に私達の体内にある肉眼では見えない、銀河系のような細胞の一つ一つにも秩序を与え、それを保っていてくださるのです。
宇宙の話に比べれば、人間の体内に宿る命の始まりなんていう話はスケールの小さな話です。しかし、神はそのミクロの世界にも関心を寄せ、愛の眼差しを注いでいるのです。神はサラ、エリサベツ、マリヤの胎内に命を与えたお方なのです。
主にある皆さん、私たちは自分たちに見えないから、理解できないから、この世界に神などいないと結論づけるべきなのでしょうか。私たちの心を覆う、疑いという厚い雨雲の向こうに、無限の神の世界が広がっているのです。神の存在を疑う前に、本当に疑うべきものは何でしょうか。それは私たちの視力であり、聴力であり、理解力なのではないでしょうか。こんな年寄りに子が与えられるはずはないと笑ったアブラハムを神は外に連れ出して、言われました。
創世記１５章５節—６節 5「天を仰いで、星を数えることができるなら、数えてみなさい」。また彼に言われた、「あなたの子孫はあのようになるでしょう」。6 アブラムは主を信じた。主はこれを彼の義と認められた。
神はアブラハムが理解できないことについて、説明をしませんでした。その代わりに神様は夜空の星を彼に見せました。アブラハムはその星を眺めて、その星の数を数えて、自分の子孫の数を知ったのではないのです。彼はその数え切れないほどの星を見て、神を理解したのではなく、神を信じたのです。
皆さん、神様はヨブに彼が理解できない理不尽な人生の苦しみの意味を懇切丁寧に説明しませんでした。その代わりに神様は彼に、彼を取り巻く自然界の不思議を語ったのです。
神様はご存知です。「私が創った人間の理解には限界がある。彼らが私のことを理解することはない」そうであるにも関わらず、私達は砂浜の小石を一つ取り上げて、海の全体を知っているような顔をする。どうか覚えてください。神様は私達に神の御業の前に頭を垂れて、神を信じることを求めているのです。
星について研究している東方の博士たちに神は普通とは異なる動きをする星を見せました（マタイ２章１節−２節）。彼らはその星に従い、ベツレヘムのイエスのもとにやってきたのです。
なぜ御使いはベツレヘムで野宿している羊飼いにイエス様の誕生を告げたのでしょうか。なぜエルサレムで毎日、律法を研究している律法学者にイエス様の誕生を告げなかったのでしょうか。一日の仕事を終え、野原に伏す時に、羊飼いは毎晩、手の届かない夜空の満点の星を見ながら眠りについた人たちだったからかもしれません。地位や学はなくとも、壮大な神の御業を見上げる毎日を過ごす彼らに、神は御使いを送り、メシアの誕生を告げたのです。
「恵まれた女よ」と御使いがマリアに告げた時、この羊飼いが飼葉に眠るイエスを訪ねてきて、彼らに起きた、この不思議な星のことをマリヤに話した時、マリヤはどうしたのでしょうか。彼女はその時、受けた言葉を思い巡らしたのです（ルカ１章２９節、２章１９節）。
彼女はそのことを自分には理解不能な事柄として、鼻から否定するのではなく、思い巡らしたのです。彼女はゆっくりと時間をかけて、大きな神の御業とそのご計画を心で受け止めようとしたのです。その疑いゆえに一年近く、口がきけなくなったザカリヤは、いよいよ口が開かれた時、言ったのです。
ルカ１章７８節、７９節 「78 これはわたしたちの神のあわれみ深いみこころによる。 また、そのあわれみによって、日の光が上からわたしたちに臨み、79 暗黒と死の陰とに住む者を照し、 わたしたちの足を平和の道へ導くであろう」。
ザカリヤは年老いた自分に子が与えられたことは、ただ神のあわれみ深い心によるのだと、そのことを受け止めたのです。そして、彼は毎朝、変わることなく必ず昇る太陽の光の中に自分の理解を超えた神の御業を認めたのです。
主にある皆さん、私たちはこれからも多くの出来事に直面することでしょう。自分には理解できないことがたくさんありますでしょう。私達の期待や想像を超えた、到底、理解できない、身に余る喜びを体験することがあることでしょう。また反対に晴天の霹靂というような試みや悲しみも経験するでしょう。しかし、そのような時にも神を信じましょう。
四方八方、厚い雲に覆われて、何も見えないような所を通るような時も、その雲の向こうに広がる世界をいつも心に思いめぐらしましょう。私達の人生を無から有を生み出す神にお委ねしましょう。ヘブル書は私たちに古の人たちの生き様を語ります。
ヘブル１１章１節—３節 1 さて、信仰とは、望んでいる事がらを確信し、まだ見ていない事実を確認することである。2 昔の人たちは、この信仰のゆえに賞賛された。3 信仰によって、わたしたちは、この世界が神の言葉で造られたのであり、したがって、見えるものは現れているものから出てきたのでないことを、悟るのである。
彼らはまだ見ていない事実を一つ一つ確認しながら生きました。そのことゆえに彼らは賞賛されたのです。ルカが聖書を最初から調べた時、彼はこれらの信仰の証人を多く、見出したことでしょう。そして、彼はザカリヤもエリサベツもその証人になったことを認めたのでしょう。
このザカリヤとエリサベツからはバプテスマのヨハネが生まれます。彼はイエス・キリストの先駆けとして世に出ます。彼は荒野に生き、この世界に悔い改めを迫ります。
ルカ３章７節-８節 7 さて、ヨハネは、彼からバプテスマを受けようとして出てきた群衆にむかって言った、「まむしの子らよ、迫ってきている神の怒りから、のがれられると、おまえたちにだれが教えたのか。8 だから、悔改めにふさわしい実を結べ。自分たちの父にはアブラハムがあるなどと、心の中で思ってもみるな。おまえたちに言っておく。神はこれらの石ころからでも、アブラハムの子を起すことができるのだ。
彼は自らの誕生の経緯を知っていましたから、確信をもって神の無限の力を語りました。『神はこれらの石ころからでも、アブラハムの子を起すことができるのだ』
この信仰と共に、彼の後にやってくるイエス・キリストの宣教の道備えをして、ヨハネは首をはねられ殉教したのです。その死は無惨なものでしたが、彼の希望は永遠に全知全能の神に抱かれるという信仰にあったのです。彼も父と母のように人間の思いを遥かに超えた神の偉大な力に対する信仰の証人となったのです。
ヘブル１２章１節—２節 1 こういうわけで、わたしたちは、このような多くの証人に雲のように囲まれているのであるから、いっさいの重荷と、からみつく罪とをかなぐり捨てて、わたしたちの参加すべき競走を、耐え忍んで走りぬこうではないか。2 信仰の導き手であり、またその完成者であるイエスを仰ぎ見つつ、走ろうではないか。彼は、自分の前におかれている喜びのゆえに、恥をもいとわないで十字架を忍び、神の御座の右に座するに至ったのである。
彼らは雲の向こうにある世界を仰ぎ見つつ、いっさいの重荷とからみつく罪とをかなぐり捨てて、人生という旅路を走り抜いたのです。どのようにして？信仰の旅路の先頭に立つ、彼らの信仰の導き手であり、完成者であるイエス・キリストを仰ぎ見つつ生きたのです。
宇宙を支配しておられるこの神の子は、私達のために処女マリアの胎内に収まることをよしとされたのです。そして、彼は私たちのために十字架にかかられたのです。ある日、夜空を見上げた詩篇８篇の記者は、その時の気持ちをこう書き残しました。
詩篇８篇３節—４節 3 わたしは、あなたの指のわざなる天を見、あなたが設けられた月と星とを見て思います。4 人は何者なので、これをみ心にとめられるのですか、人の子は何者なので、これを顧みられるのですか。
目の前に瞬く一つの星に心を向けるだけで、私たちは思うのです。神よ、なぜあなたは私たちを顧みてくださるのですか。あなたの偉大さの前には埃のような私達のために、あなたはなぜ、あなたのひとり子、イエス様の命を私達にお与えくださったのですか。
どうか、私達がこのイエス様から目を離すことがありませんように。信仰の導き手であるイエス様は何を信じて、自分の前におかれている喜びのゆえに恥をもいとわないで十字架を忍び、神の御座の右に座するに至ったのでしょうか。
イエス様はあなたや私が神に立ち返ることを信じて、十字架におかかりくださったのです。それならイエス様の信仰に私達も信仰をもってお応えしようではありませんか。私達の信仰が雲の向こうにある満点の星空をいつも心に思い描くことができますように。
詩篇３４篇５節 「主を仰ぎ見て、光を得よ」
信仰とは、その言葉のとおり、信じで仰ぎ見ることなのです。自分の身に降りかかる全てのことを、今までしてきたように、これからも自分の小さな手の中で掌握しようとするのか、それとも天地万物を創造された神を仰ぎ見て生きるのか。あなたは今日、どちらを選ぶのでしょうか。
お祈りしましょう。
Zachariah & Elizabeth: Stars Shining Beyond the Rain Clouds

Last week, Pastor Honda gave a message for Respect for the Elderly Day. As we have already told you, from today we will be looking at people recorded in the New Testament.
The New Testament describes what has happened since the birth of Jesus Christ, beginning with the Gospels written by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. They recorded the words and deeds of Jesus Christ from their own perspectives. One of them, Luke, began his “Gospel according to Luke” in the following manner.
Luke 1:1-4. 1 Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, 2 just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. 3 With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, 4 so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.
Luke is said to be a doctor. A doctor examines the patient’s body objectively and tries to find the pathology hidden in it. We can see from this that Luke, who possesses this gift, is a person who does not look at “delusion” or “fiction” but at “facts”. Luke did not do this through subjectivity or wishful thinking, but by examining things in detail from the beginning and writing them down in order.He said that he is doing this so that people will know that what he is about to write down is not fiction, but something that actually happened.
If he “investigated from the beginning,” it must mean that he also examined in detail the entire Old Testament record of the Jewish people, beginning with the Creation. He would have seen in it the order and relevance of the events that occurred to the Israelites beginning with creation, and his eyes would have been opened to God’s plan. And right after this introduction, Luke mentions a couple that we will look at today.
Luke 1:5-7. 5 In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. 6 Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly. 7 But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old.
Zachariah was a priest, and he had a wife named Elizabeth, who was of the blood of Aaron, Moses’ brother. They lived righteously before God, but they had no children and were elderly. Their age was past the time when they were physically able to have children. An angel appears to them and tells them:
Luke 1:13. “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John.”
Only Luke records this matter concerning Zachariah and Elizabeth. The other Gospel writers do not record them. Earlier I said Luke had “carefully investigated everything from the beginning,” but when he wrote about this couple, he must have had another couple in mind as well.
Yes, it is Abraham and Sarah recorded in Genesis in the Old Testament. This couple was also elderly, and they also had no children. But God promises to give the couple a son, and true to His word, a son Isaac is born to them. At the time, Abraham was 100 years old and Sarah was 90. The Jewish people began with Abraham, and the Old Testament describes the events between the Jewish people and God.
Today, we think. It is absolutely impossible for a couple who are both over 90 years old to have a child together. A doctor will be able to explain the “impossible reason” in physiological terms. Luke, a physician, however, wrote this “impossible thing” at the beginning of his Gospel.
People in the Lord, let us note that both the Old and New Testaments begin with events that are far beyond our human thinking. This is a risky thing to do when it comes to winning the hearts and minds of readers. Because we stumble when we read things like this. Because we close our hearts to the words of the Bible.
But even so, the Bible nonetheless writes in such a matter-of-fact way “things that we do not understand”. What this shows is that the Bible does not ask us to understand it in the first place. Why? The answer is simple.
This is because the Bible is a book that records the intervention of “God” in this world. What may seem like a stumbling block to us, on God’s part, is not something to fuss about, but something that is normal. People in the Lord, that is why “God” is God.
But even so, this is hard for us to accept. We decide whether a thing is real or not by what we see, hear, and touch. When people of that time looked at Abraham and his wife, Zachariah and his wife, they would have looked old to anyone’s eyes.
Their aging bodies are different from those of their youth, and their physical functions are clearly different from what they once were. Therefore, we understand that there is no such thing as a new life being produced from that body. Such a story is unacceptable to us.
And so, in fact, it was the same for the parties who were told about it. The Bible records that at that time, both Abraham and Sarah laughed at the words of God and His angel that “a child would be given” to them (Genesis 17:17, 18:12). Many years later, Zachariah also responded to the angel’s promise that he will be given a son, saying:
Luke 1:18. “How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.”
Because of Zachariah’s doubt, God took away his ability to speak, and he was rendered speechless until the birth of the promised child.The fact that a child is given to these two couples, this is already enough of a stumbling block for us, and then Luke adds to this. The birth of Jesus Christ, which Luke describes after this, is, as you know, the story of Jesus’ conception in the virgin Mary.
We think, “Luke is writing this kind of stuff again!” There are many people in this world who say, “The words of the Bible are wonderful. The words of the Bible would be called the highest ethics.” However, when it comes to talking about Jesus’ “virgin birth” and “resurrection,” they all turn their backs and walk away from the church (I hope there is no one like that today). Is anyone here having difficulty with this matter?
Earlier this month, the Holiness Conference General Assembly was held in Honolulu, Hawaii. Afterwards, I took a vacation, and my wife and I went to the Island of Hawaii, also known as The Big Island.
The Big Island, as its name suggests, is a large island, covering an area larger than Japan’s Shikoku Island. And on that island are two mountains higher than Mt. Fuji, over 4000 meters high. One is Mauna Kea at 4205 meters (13,800 feet) and the other is Mauna Loa at 4170 meters (13,679 feet), and in winter snow can fall on the summits of these mountains.
The summit of Mauna Kea is not illuminated by artificial light, and the clear year-round air makes astronomical observations possible for 300 days of the year. Therefore, huge telescopes from around the world are installed there, and astronomical observations are made daily. There is also Japan’s huge telescope called “Subaru,” which has a lens size of 8.2 meters in diameter, the largest primary mirror in the world!
I don’t know much about stars, but I do love to look at a star-filled sky. Therefore, I wanted to get a good explanation, so my wife and I joined an astronomical tour of Mauna Kea.
On that day, looking up from the base of the mountain, Mauna Kea was covered by thick gray rain clouds, so we could not see it at all. Looking up at the clouds, other tourists said, “This is no good today. I was looking forward to seeing it, but it’s too bad.” I also thought that I wouldn’t be able to see any stars with these thick clouds. I thought the tour would be cancelled. But our guide didn’t seem concerned, and he was explaining to us how astronomical observations are done on the mountain. While hearing that talk, I came to understand something. Do you know what it is?
We are now going to go above the clouds!
Indeed, we passed through a foggy cloud cover on our way to the summit. It is a situation where you can’t see more than a few meters ahead. But as we passed through it, a star-filled sky opened up before us! The night sky was filled with the Milky Way and the constellations that can be seen from summer to fall.
As one would expect from a professional, the guide talked about the constellations one after the other. And he mentioned many times how far away those stars are from Earth. This star is “50 light years away” from Earth, or “that one is 400 light years away”.
A light year is the distance light travels in one year, which is 9.46 trillion kilometers (5.9125 trillion miles). This distance would take 3.61 million years to cover by Shinkansen (Japan’s bullet train) running at 300 km/h (187 mph) 24 hours a day, every day, without stopping.That is the distance of one light year.
Our guide told us that at 400 times that distance (3,784,000,000,000 kilometers or 2,365,000,000,000,000 miles) is the star we are looking at now. It would take 1.444 billion years by Shinkansen to get there. By the way, the Milky Way in the blurry picture behind us is 100,000 light years away, which is 250 times farther than this star!
For us who say, “It is 120 miles to Los Angeles. It is not an easy drive,” we don’t realize how far that is. We are unable to understand. Of course, we have no idea what the star looks like or what minerals it is made of.
But as long as that star is there and shining, no matter how far away it is, we cannot deny its existence. Ladies and gentlemen, there are trillions of such stars in the universe.
Our guide had brought his telescope and showed us one group of stars.The stars are blurred and invisible to the naked eye. However, if you look through a telescope, there are indeed countless stars shining there.
Even in San Diego, when we look up at the night sky, we can recognize some stars. In reality, however, there are billions, or rather, a near infinite number of stars out there, invisible to our eyes. In such a grand scheme of things, human beings are really tiny. For us, life, which is everything, is like a single blink of an eye. However, those stars remain the same, are orderly, and shine brightly in the night sky. And we call the being that gives order to the stars of the universe, and maintains them, “God”.
Psalm 147:4,5. He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name. 5 Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit.
Isaiah 40:26. Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.
This time, as I looked through the telescope at the Milky Way, I noticed that the countless stars spread out before me resembled something.
Yes, it is cells that exists in our body! God rules over the grand universe, and at the same time, He gives order to and preserves each and every galaxy-like cell in our bodies that we cannot see with the naked eye.Compared to the story of the universe, the story of the beginning of life in the human body is a small scale story. But God is also interested in that microscopic world and pours His loving gaze upon it. God is the One who gave life in the wombs of Sarah, Elizabeth, and Mary.
People in the Lord, should we conclude that there is no God in this world because we cannot see or understand it ourselves? Beyond the thick rain cloud of doubt that covers our hearts lies the infinite world of God. What should we really doubt before we doubt the existence of God? Is it not our sight, our hearing, and our understanding? God took Abraham outside, who laughed at the idea that a son could not be given to such an old man, and said:
Genesis 15:5-6. “Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” 6 Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.
God gave no explanation for what Abraham did not understand. Instead, God showed him the stars of the night sky. Abraham did not know the number of his descendants by looking at those stars and counting them. He did not understand God by looking at those countless stars; he believed God.
Ladies and Gentlemen, God did not explain to Job in a solicitous manner the meaning of the unreasonable suffering of life that he could not understand.Instead, God told him of the wonders of the natural world around him.
God knows. “There is a limit to the understanding of the humans I have created. They will never understand Me.”Even so, we take one pebble from the beach and look as if we know the whole ocean. Please remember. God is asking us to bow our heads before His work and believe Him.
To the Magi from the East who were studying the stars, God showed a star with an unusual movement (Matthew 2:1-2). They followed that star and came to Jesus in Bethlehem.
Why did the angel announce the birth of Jesus to the shepherds who were out in the fields of Bethlehem? Why didn’t they announce the birth of Jesus to the scribes studying the Law daily in Jerusalem? Perhaps it is because shepherds were the ones who, when they finished their day’s work and lay down in the field, went to sleep each night looking at the star-filled night sky that was beyond their reach. They may not have had status or education, but they spent their days looking up at the magnificent work of God, and God sent His angel to announce the birth of the Messiah to them.
When the angel told Mary, “you who are highly favored,” when the shepherds came to visit Jesus asleep in the manger and told Mary about the wondrous star and what had happened to them, what did Mary do? She then pondered the words she had received (Luke 1:29, 2:19).
She pondered it, rather than dismissing it as a matter beyond her comprehension.She took her time and tried to accept the great work of God and His plan in her heart. When Zachariah who had been unable to speak for nearly a year because of his doubt finally opened his mouth, he said:
Luke 1:78, 79. “because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven 79 to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace.”
Zachariah accepted that it was only through God’s tender mercy that he was given a child in his old age. And he recognized the work of God beyond his comprehension in the light of the sun, which always rises every morning without fail and without change.
People in the Lord, we will face many more events in the future. There will be many things that you will not understand. We may experience a joy that is beyond our expectations and imagination, that we cannot possibly comprehend. Conversely, we will also experience trials and sorrows that come out of the blue. But even in such times, let us believe God.
Even when you are passing through a place covered with thick clouds in all directions and cannot see anything, always keep in mind the world that extends beyond those clouds. Let us entrust our lives to God who creates something out of nothing. The book of Hebrews tells us of the lives of those who have gone before us.
Hebrews 11:1-3. 1 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. 2 This is what the ancients were commended for. 3 By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.
They lived by confirming each fact that they had not yet seen. For this they were commended. When Luke investigated the Bible from the beginning, he would have found many of these witnesses of the faith. And he would have recognized that both Zachariah and Elizabeth became such a witness.
From this Zachariah and Elizabeth, John the Baptist is born. He comes into the world as a forerunner of Jesus Christ. He lives in the wilderness and forces this world to repent.
Luke 3:7-8. 7 John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.
He knew the circumstances of his own birth, so he spoke with conviction of God’s infinite power. “out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.”
Along with this faith, John was beheaded and martyred in preparation for the ministry of Jesus Christ that would come after him.
Though his death was cruel, his hope lay in the faith that he would be embraced by the Almighty God forever. He, like his father and mother, became a witness of faith in the great power of God that far exceeds human thoughts.
Hebrews 12:1-2. 1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
They looked up at the world beyond the clouds, and throwing off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, ran through the journey of life. How? They lived their lives fixing their eyes on Jesus Christ, the pioneer and perfecter of faith, who was at the head of their journey of faith.
This Son of God, who rules the universe, was willing to be conceived in the womb of the virgin Mary for us. And He went to the cross for us. One day, looking up at the night sky, the author of Psalm 8 wrote of his feelings.
Psalm 8:3-4. When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, 4 what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?
By turning our hearts to the one star twinkling in front of us, we think.O God, why do you care for us? For us, who are like dust before Your greatness, why have You given us the life of Your only begotten Son, Jesus?
Please, may we never take our eyes off of Jesus. Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith, what did He believe, that for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God?
Jesus believed that you and I would turn to God and He went to the cross.Then let us respond to Jesus’ faith with our own faith. May our faith always envision in our hearts a star-filled sky beyond the clouds.
Psalm 34:5. Those who look to him are radiant;
Faith, as the word implies (in Japanese), is to (信) believe and (仰) look up. Will you continue to try to seize everything that befalls you in your own little hands, as you have done? Or will you live by looking up to God, the Creator of heaven and earth and all things? Which will you choose today?
