イエス・キリストは祭司長、長老、律法学者達の前に立たされて裁判を受けました。その裁判においてイエスは十字架にかかるという判決を自らの発言によって逃れることができました。そのとき、大祭司はイエスに聞きました「あなたは、ほむべき者の子、キリストであるか」（マルコ１４章６１節）。イエスはそれに対して何も答えずに黙っていることもできました。しかし、イエスは一つの確信を語りました「わたしがそれである。あなたがたは人の子が力ある者の右に座し、天の雲に乗って来るのを見るであろう」（マルコ１４章６２節）。この言葉が致命的な一言となりました。この言葉を聞いた大祭司は怒りのあまり、自らの衣を引き裂きました。そして、大祭司もその所にいた者たちも皆、イエスは死罪に当たるということを全員一致で断定したのです。そうです、この一言ゆえにキリストは十字架にかかりました。言い方を変えますのなら、この言葉にキリストは命をかけたのです。

ゼパニヤ書：シェルターよりも大切な備え
２０１３年１月１３日
新しい年を迎えました。これまで「一つにとらわれず全体を」というテーマのもとに聖書６６巻を一書ずつ見てきておりましたが、クリスマスや合同礼拝でそのシリーズも中断しておりました。しかし今日から再び残された旧約聖書の最後から四番目の書、「ゼパニヤ書」を見ていきたく願っております。「ゼパニア書」と言われて、そこに何が書かれているのかすぐに答えることができる人はあまりいないと思います。「ゼパニア書」なんて書が聖書にあったのか、初めて聞きましたと思われる方もいるのではないかと思います。
ゼパニア書は開口一番こう始まります。『ユダの王アモンの子ヨシヤの世に、ゼパニヤに臨んだ主の言葉』（１章１節）。こう記すことにより、このゼパニヤ書がゼパニヤの願いや予測によって書かれたものではなく、それは神様からゼパニヤが授かった言葉を書き記しているのだということが確認されます。そして、この言葉に続いて、このような厳粛な言葉が記されていることに私達は目を留めます。
2主は言われる、「わたしは地のおもてからすべてのものを一掃する」。3主は言われる、「わたしは人も獣も一掃し、空の鳥、海の魚をも一掃する。わたしは悪人を倒す。わたしは地のおもてから人を絶ち滅ぼす」。「わたしはユダとエルサレムのすべての住民との上に手を伸べる。わたしはこの所からバアルの残党と、偶像の祭司の名とを断つ。5また屋上で天の万象を拝む者、主に誓いを立てて拝みながら、またミルコムをさして誓う者、6主にそむいて従わない者、主を求めず、主を尋ねない者を断つ」。7主なる神の前に沈黙せよ。主の日は近づき、主はすでに犠牲を備え、その招いた者を聖別されたからである。8主の犠牲をささげる日に、「わたしはつかさたちと王の子たち、およびすべて異邦の衣服を着る者を罰する。9その日にわたしはまた、すべて敷居をとび越え、暴虐と欺きとを自分の主君の家に満たす者を罰する」（ゼパニヤ１章２節‐９節）。
ゼパニヤはヨシア王の治世であった南ユダ王国を生き（紀元前６３９年～紀元前６０８年）、彼は預言者エレミヤと同時代の人であったと思われます。その時代、北イスラエル王国は既に滅亡しており（紀元前７２１年）、その北イスラエルを征服したアッシリアも滅亡していました（紀元前６２１年）。これらの国が滅亡したことには彼らの慢心と、彼らが神様を崇めることなく、救いがたいほどに諸々の悪と不正が世にはびこっていたということがその背景にはあります。これらのこの世の国々の栄枯盛衰を見ながら、ゼパニヤは神の言葉を受け、預言の言葉を残したのでありましょう。
ゼパニア書の特徴は「主の日」という特別な日がこの書の中に記されているところにあります。「主の日」とは何か。近隣諸国が栄えれば衰え、やがて滅びる様を身近に目の当たりにしたゼパニヤではありますが、人事ではなく彼が暮らす南ユダの滅亡の日も近い、その日のことを彼は「主の日」として預言したのです。彼はこの「主の日」という言葉をゼパニヤ書の中で二回使い（１章７節、１４節）、同じ意味を持つ「その日」という言葉もその文書中に四度使っています（１章１０節、１５節、３章１１節、１６節）。ゼパニヤ書はわずか三章しかない書ですから、その中に七度、主の日が語られているということは、この書にとって「主の日」、すなわち南ユダ王国の滅亡の日がくるという預言こそがまさしくそのテーマであるということが分かります。
そして、実際にゼパニヤの預言どおりに、南ユダ王国は紀元前５９７年、バビロンによって滅ぼされ、イスラエルは一掃され、その民も皆、捕囚民としてバビロンに連行されていきます。しかしながら、そのバビロンもやがてペルシャによって滅亡します。他国を一掃した国が、また他国に一掃されていくのです。
そして、特に私達が厳粛に心に留めなければならないことは、預言者ゼパニヤにとりまして、北イスラエルの滅亡も南ユダの滅亡もバビロンの滅亡も、それらはやがて起こる「この世界の決算の日」としての「主の日」にいたる出来事に過ぎなかったということでした。そうです、その主の日は私達が現在、暮らすこの世界が決算される「その日」をも指し示しているのです。
「思いつき」という言葉があります。それは誰かがその時にパッと思いつくことであり、ある人はその思いつきを言葉によって発し、またある人はその思いつきを行動にします。その思いつきにより語られた言葉や行動は文字通りパッとひらめいたものでありますゆえに、それらは一時的なもので、それが継続されて何かを形作っていうことはまずありません。
しかし、それが長い間かけてたてられた計画の中の一つであるのなら、その計画が一つ一つ成就していくように、やがてその出来事は成し遂げられます。そう考えます時に、これまで見てきましたヨエル書にも「主の日」の預言がありましたし、これから見ていきますゼカリヤ書もまさしく「主の日」、すなわちこの世界の最後について預言している書なのです。
そして、これらの預言はそのまま放っておかれるのではなくて、これらの預言者より５００年も６００年も後にこの地を歩まれたイエス・キリストも古の預言者達が語り伝えた「その日」について具体的にどのようなことが起るのかを語り、さらに後には聖書の一番最後に収められているヨハネの黙示録においてもまさしくこの世界の最後の時が言及されているのです。
ゆえに、これら聖書全体が私達に語りかけていることは、何を隠そう私達自身が、まさしくその主の日が今日来るのか、明日来るのかという時代を今、生きているということなのです。
今から２５００年ほど前にメキシコ南東部で栄えましたマヤという文明がありますが、そのマヤで使われていた暦というものがあるそうで、その暦によりますと昨年暮れの１２月２１日にこの地球は滅亡するということだったそうで、ある人達はこれを真剣に受け止めて、シェルターを作ったりと色々と大変な苦労をされたそうです。
しかしながら、ご存知のようにそのようなことは起らず今にいたっています。その時に地球滅亡が起きませんでしたので、その１２月２１日直後には「２０１２年１２月に終わるのは計算違いでした」ということを言い出す人達もいたそうで、今度は「２０２０年３月２０日に終わります」と訂正しているといのです。これらに加えて、また別の人達や団体が、近いところでは２０１３年５月に太陽フレアによって文明が崩壊するという説や、２０１７年にハルマゲドンがやってくるという説、はては３７９７年３月２１日に惑星直列が起きて世界が終わるという説もあります。中には聖書中のヨハネによる黙示録や諸々の預言書から言葉を引用して、根拠のない計算などをして、この日が終りの日だと言っている人達がこれまでたくさんいましたし、これからも出てくることでしょう。
このようなことを見聞きするにつけ、心から祈ることは彼らがその人生の貴重な時間をこのようなことのために無駄にすることがないように、どこかでこのような虚しいものから解放されてほしいということ以外にありません。ちなみにこの度のマヤ暦の人類滅亡預言によりメキシコ観光産業省は同国の遺跡訪問客が過去最高の２３００万人と過去最高を記録したと発表しており、終末騒ぎの経済効果もあるようです。
しかし、このようなことが起きていることについて、ペテロはすでに２０００年前にペテロ第二の手紙の中でこう記しています。
『14愛する者たちよ。それだから、この日を待っているあなたがたは、しみもなくきずもなく、安らかな心で、神のみまえに出られるように励みなさい。15また、わたしたちの主の寛容は救のためであると思いなさい。このことは、わたしたちの愛する兄弟パウロが、彼に与えられた知恵によって、あなたがたに書きおくったとおりである。16彼は、どの手紙にもこれらのことを述べている。『その手紙の中には、ところどころ、わかりにくい箇所もあって、無学で心の定まらない者たちは、ほかの聖書についてもしているように、無理な解釈をほどこして、自分の滅亡を招いている。17愛する者たちよ。それだから、あなたがたはかねてから心がけているように、非道の者の惑わしに誘い込まれて、あなたがた自身の確信を失うことのないように心がけなさい』（ペテロ第二の手紙３章１６節ー１７節）。
既に２０００年も昔から、世の終りについて様々なことを言う人がいたようであります。しかし、ペテロはそのような揺れ動く時代に「あなたがた自身の確信を失うことのないように心がけなさい」と言いました。それではその確信とは何でしょうか。このことに関する私達の確信はイエス・キリストがマタイ２４章３５節‐３６節において既に２０００年前に言及していることです『35天地は滅びるであろう。しかしわたしの言葉は滅びることがない。36その日、その時は、だれも知らない。天の御使たちも、また子も知らない、ただ父だけが知っておられる』
これまでに世の終りの日を指定した人はこれまで数え切れないほどおり、しかしながら、それらはことごとく外れており、これからもそのような人達は世界中にたくさん起こされていくことでしょうが、その日を的中する人はいないでしょう。私達はそのような「それがいつか」ということに心を奪われることがないように、しっかりと「その日、その時は誰も知らない。ただ父なる神だけが知っている」という、その確信にしっかりと立ち続けなければなりません。
また同時に確信しなければならない最も大切なことの一つは、この時については父なる神以外の者は誰も知りえませんが、このところでイエス様は『天地は滅びるであろう』とはっきりと言われているということです。ある人はこの世界は巡りめぐっているものであり、私達は死んでも何かに生まれ代わってこの世界に戻ってくると輪廻を唱えます。これはくるくる回る円のようなもので、終りがありません。しかし、聖書が主張していることはこの世界にはかつて確かに初めがあり、確かにその終わりがあるということです。
すなわち創世記が開口一番「はじめに神は天と地とを創造された」（創世記１章１節）と記しているように、また聖書の一番最後の書、ヨハネの黙示録の一番最後のページに12「見よ、わたしはすぐに来る。報いを携えてきて、それぞれのしわざに応じて報いよう。13わたしはアルパであり、オメガである。最初の者であり、最後の者である。初めであり、終りである（ヨハネ黙示録２２章１２節‐１３節）と記されている通りです。
さて、それではこれから最も大切なことをお話しましょう。それは、聖書が確かに言っている「その日」に対する備えということです。よく水や毛布や懐中電灯を備えておきましょう、シェルターを作っておきましょうということが言われますが、聖書が記している「その日」というのはある地域の自然災害からの生き残りを指しているのではなく、文字通りその日は最後の日なのですから、そのようなライフラインの備えには意味がありません。私達にはもっと大切な備えがあるのです。ゼパニヤの預言の中にそのことが書かれています。
1あなたがた、恥を知らぬ民よ、共につどい、集まれ。2すなわち、もみがらのように追いやられる前に、主の激しい怒りがまだあなたがたに臨まない前に、主の憤りの日がまだあなたがたに来ない前に。3すべて主の命令を行うこの地のへりくだる者よ、主を求めよ。正義を求めよ。謙遜を求めよ。そうすればあなたがたは主の怒りの日に、あるいは隠されることがあろう（ゼパニヤ２章１節‐３節）。
ここでゼパニヤは私達のような読者にあることを勧めています。それは私達に、その日が来る前に、もみがらのように私達が吹き飛ばされる前に「へりくだり、共に集い、集まれ、主を求め、正義を求め、謙遜を求めよ！」というのです。そうすれば、その日に私達は神の怒りに隠されるというのです。
私達は２０１２年、最後の日曜日に申命記８章から「私達が歩んできた一年において主が導かれたその全ての道を覚えよ」ということを聞きました。そうです、私達が歩んできた一年の全ての道をおぼえるということについて聖書をみました。そして、なぜ、その全ての道を覚えなければならないのかという、その理由として、それは私達が「謙遜になる」ためだとお話しました。そして、なぜ謙遜なのか。なぜなら謙遜にならなければ、へりくだらなければ、神を知ることができないからですとお話しました。
そして、今日、私達はまた「主の日」に対する備えとして「謙遜を求めよ」という言葉に再び向き合わせられています。私は今朝、先日、お話したことにこじつけるために意識して無理して、この言葉を見つけ出して拾い上げているのではなくて、今日、予め話すべき聖書箇所としてあったゼパニヤ書の中にもこの謙遜が記されていたのです。
このように度々、同じことが続けて聖書から語りかけられることを、私達はその信仰生活の中で経験します。どういうわけかあちらこちらでここ最近、聞いている言葉を聞く、そのようなことが私達には多々あるのです。人はそれを「偶然」と言うかもしれませんが、私達が信仰をもって、それを受け止めさせていただきますのなら、それはまさしく神様が私達に語りかけていることなのでありましょう。ですから、私達はこの年末年始に何度も語られた言葉として、謙遜を追い求めるということ、そして、そのことによって「私達は神を知るということ」、そのことによって「私達は逃亡から隠れる」ことができるということを大切にしようではありませんか。
人は心情的にどうしても自分にとって居心地のいい言葉を求めます。快適な話を聞くことを喜びます。しかし、もし教会の講壇で心地よいことばかりが語られるとしますのなら、もはやその講壇は神様のみ言葉を取り次ぐ場所ではなくなりますでしょう。
私達の教団にジョージ戸田先生という方がいます。今から１０年以上前に私はこのサンディエゴ教会で按手礼をいただいたのですが、その按手礼式の中で戸田先生がまさしく、この講壇にお立ちになり、お話しくださった言葉を忘れることができません。先生はこれから牧師として歩んで行く者に対して「心のチキンスープ」（ご存知ですか。心温まる感動的なストーリが満載されている本です）のような話ばかりをしてはいけないと話してくださいました。先生の長い伝道牧会生活の中からきっと先生が会得されたことなのでしょう。生涯忘れられない言葉です。
「ありのままのあなたがいいよ」「信仰もつならあなたは経済的に裕福になるよ」「願うままの人間になれるよ」「この世界には問題はないよ」「あなたはオーケーだよ」。これらは聞いている者にとって、とても心地よい話です。このような話ばかりをして、大勢の人達が集まり成長している教会がアメリカにはあるようです。細かい説明が必要ですが、これらのことは全く間違っているわけではありません。しかし、今日、お話していますように、もし「その日」が来た時、「その日がくる」ということ、「それに備えること」を話していない牧師はきっと恨まれることでしょう。なんで、世の中のいいことばかりを話して、この最も肝心なことを話してくれなかったのだと。
そうです、世の終りがくるなんてことは「今が楽しければいい」という人にとっては耳ざわりな話でしょうし、「そんなことを考えるよりも、今の生活に精一杯だ」という方にとっては大きなお世話でありましょう。しかし、聖書に記されている以上、お話しなければなりません。私達は時々、このことを確認して、その度に主の前にしっかりと自分が立っている場所というものを確認しなければなりません。そこで、イエス・キリストご自身がゼパニヤの預言した「その日」について、さらに具体的に話された言葉をそのまま、少し長いですが、読ませていただきます。
3またオリブ山ですわっておられると、弟子たちが、ひそかにみもとにきて言った、「どうぞお話しください。いつ、そんなことが起るのでしょうか。あなたがまたおいでになる時や、世の終りには、どんな前兆がありますか」。4そこでイエスは答えて言われた、「人に惑わされないように気をつけなさい。5多くの者がわたしの名を名のって現れ、自分がキリストだと言って、多くの人を惑わすであろう。6また、戦争と戦争のうわさとを聞くであろう。注意していなさい、あわててはいけない。それは起らねばならないが、まだ終りではない。7民は民に、国は国に敵対して立ち上がるであろう。またあちこちに、ききんが起り、また地震があるであろう。8しかし、すべてこれらは産みの苦しみの初めである。9そのとき人々は、あなたがたを苦しみにあわせ、また殺すであろう。またあなたがたは、わたしの名のゆえにすべての民に憎まれるであろう。10そのとき、多くの人がつまずき、また互に裏切り、憎み合うであろう。11また多くのにせ預言者が起って、多くの人を惑わすであろう。12また不法がはびこるので、多くの人の愛が冷えるであろう。13しかし、最後まで耐え忍ぶ者は救われる。14そしてこの御国の福音は、すべての民に対してあかしをするために、全世界に宣べ伝えられるであろう。そしてそれから最後が来るのである。29しかし、その時に起る患難の後、たちまち日は暗くなり、月はその光を放つことをやめ、星は空から落ち、天体は揺り動かされるであろう。30そのとき、人の子のしるしが天に現れるであろう。またそのとき、地のすべての民族は嘆き、そして力と大いなる栄光とをもって、人の子が天の雲に乗って来るのを、人々は見るであろう。31また、彼は大いなるラッパの音と共に御使たちをつかわして、天のはてからはてに至るまで、四方からその選民を呼び集めるであろう。32いちじくの木からこの譬を学びなさい。その枝が柔らかになり、葉が出るようになると、夏の近いことがわかる。33そのように、すべてこれらのことを見たならば、人の子が戸口まで近づいていると知りなさい。34よく聞いておきなさい。これらの事が、ことごとく起るまでは、この時代は滅びることがない。35天地は滅びるであろう。しかしわたしの言葉は滅びることがない。36その日、その時は、だれも知らない。天の御使たちも、また子も知らない、ただ父だけが知っておられる。37人の子の現れるのも、ちょうどノアの時のようであろう。38すなわち、洪水の出る前、ノアが箱舟にはいる日まで、人々は食い、飲み、めとり、とつぎなどしていた。39そして洪水が襲ってきて、いっさいのものをさらって行くまで、彼らは気がつかなかった。人の子の現れるのも、そのようであろう（マタイ２４章３節‐４６節）。
その時についてそれが確かにこの日に来るというのなら、備えることができます。しかし、その日は誰も知らず、それは私達が普通に過ごしているような日常の只中である日、突然、起きるというのです。すなわちそれは、その日は今日かもしれず、明日かもしれないということです。そうであるのなら、私達の備えはいつから始まるのでしょうか。そうです、備えは今日から始まるべきです。

聖書の預言はここまでです。この聖書の言葉を取り上げて多くの人達がその日を見出したと言って来ました。しかし、何度も申し上げますがその日を知る人はいません。なんだ、そんなこと言ったって、イエスの時代から既に２０００年が経っているではないか。そうです、２０００年は長い。しかし、ペテロは言っています。
8愛する者たちよ。この一事を忘れてはならない。主にあっては、一日は千年のようであり、千年は一日のようである。9ある人々がおそいと思っているように、主は約束の実行をおそくしておられるのではない。ただ、ひとりも滅びることがなく、すべての者が悔改めに至ることを望み、あなたがたに対してながく忍耐しておられるのである。10しかし、主の日は盗人のように襲って来る。その日には、天は大音響をたてて消え去り、天体は焼けてくずれ、地とその上に造り出されたものも、みな焼きつくされるであろう。11このように、これらはみなくずれ落ちていくものであるから、神の日の到来を熱心に待ち望んでいるあなたがたは、12極力、きよく信心深い行いをしていなければならない。その日には、天は燃えくずれ、天体は焼けうせてしまう。13しかし、わたしたちは、神の約束に従って、義の住む新しい天と新しい地とを待ち望んでいる。14愛する者たちよ。それだから、この日を待っているあなたがたは、しみもなくきずもなく、安らかな心で、神のみまえに出られるように励みなさい。15また、わたしたちの主の寛容は救のためであると思いなさい（ペテロ第二の手紙３章８節ー１５節）。
イエス・キリストはその公の生涯を始められる時、一番最初に口にした言葉をご存知でしょうか。イエス様はガリラヤに行き、神の福音を宣べ伝えて言われたのです『時は満ちた、神の国は近づいた。悔い改めて福音を信ぜよ』（マルコ１章１５節）。この言葉を聞き、私達はこのイエスよりも６００年も前に預言したゼパニヤの言葉に合点します。3すべて主の命令を行うこの地のへりくだる者よ、主を求めよ。正義を求めよ。謙遜を求めよ。そうすればあなたがたは主の怒りの日に、あるいは隠されることがあろう。ゼパニヤのこの言葉は実にイエス・キリストの第一声、「悔い改めて福音を信ぜよ」ということを言っているのです。へりくだり、主とその義を求め、謙遜になるということは実に「悔い改める」ということだからです。
「主の日」が来る前に皆さんに今日、牧師としてお話しすることができたことを主に感謝します。少なくとも「お前は地上で何を語ってきたのだ」ということを父なる神様から言われることがないからです。ボールは投げました。受け止められるのは皆さんです。イエス・キリストが何度も言われた言葉をもってこのメッセージを終えましょう。「聞く耳のある者は、聞くが良い」。

Preparation more important than a Shelter

We
have welcomed a new year. Though we have been looking at each of the 66 books
of the Bible with the theme, “don't be caught in one thing but look at the
whole picture,” our series has been interrupted by Christmas and Joint service.
But today, we will be resuming by taking a look at Zephaniah, the fourth to
last book of the Old Testament. Not many people can give an answer when asked
what’s written in the book of Zephaniah. Some of you may think, “Woa, I didn’t
even know a book called Zephaniah existed.”
Zephaniah
opens with these words: “The word of
Lord that came to Zephaniah during the reign of Josiah son of Amon king of Judah.”
This confirms that the book wasn’t written through Zephaniah’s desire or
prediction, but written as words given to him by God. And we take note at the
solemn words that follow.
“I will sweep away everything from the face
of the earth,” declares the Lord. “I
will sweep away both man and beast; I will sweep away the birds in the sky and
the fish in the sea—and the idols that cause the wicked to stumble.” “When I
destroy all mankind on the face of the earth,” declares the Lord, “I will
stretch out my hand against Judah
and against all who live in Jerusalem.
I will destroy every remnant of Baal worship in this place, the very names of
the idolatrous priests—those who bow down on the roofs to worship the starry
host, those who bow down and swear by the Lord and who also swear by Molek,
those who turn back from following the Lord and neither seek the Lord nor
inquire of him.” Be silent before the Sovereign Lord, for the day of the
Lord is near. The Lord has prepared a sacrifice; he has consecrated those
he has invited. “On the day of the Lord’s sacrifice I will punish the officials
and the king’s sons and all those clad in foreign clothes. On that day I
will punish all who avoid stepping on the threshold, who fill the temple of
their gods with violence and deceit. (Zephaniah 1:2-9)
Zephaniah
lived in the Southern Kingdom of Judah during the reign of King Josiah
(639BC-608BC), and is thought to have lived in the same time period as prophet
Jeremiah. During this time period, the Kingdom
of Northern Israel had already
collapsed (721BC), and Assyria, the country that had conquered Northern Israel had collapsed as well (621BC). The reason
for their destruction lay in their background of pride, disrespect to God and
the spreading of various evil-corruption which were beyond redemption. Zephaniah
must have received the words from God and given us the words of prophecy as he
saw the ups and downs of these countries.
One
characteristic of book of Zephaniah is that it talks about a special day, which
is “the day of the Lord.” What is
“the day of the Lord”? Zephaniah witnessed the flourishing and declining, and
eventually the destruction of neighboring countries close up. He was
prophesying the nearing destruction of Southern Judea,
a country he lived in, and called this day “the day of the Lord.” He uses the
phrase “the day of the Lord” twice in the book of Zephaniah (1:4 & 14) and
uses the words “that day” which holds the same meaning four times (1:10 &
15, 3:11 & 16). Now, there are only three chapters in the book of Zephaniah,
so “the day of the Lord” appearing seven times in this book means that this, in
other words, the prophecy of the day of destruction for the Kingdom of Southern
Judea, is indeed the theme of this book.
And
as Zephaniah prophesied, the Kingdom
of Southern Judea is destroyed by Babylon in 597BC. Israel is cleared out and the people are taken
to Babylon as
captives. Yet, Babylon is soon destroyed by Persia. Like
so, a country that got rid of another was being wiped out by a different
country.
And
what we seriously need to keep in mind is that, to Zephaniah, the collapse of
Northern Israel, Southern Judea and Babylon were all just events that were
suppose to happen before “the Lord’s day” aka “the day of the world’s
settlement” which would eventually happen. The Lord’s day also points to “the
day,” when this world we live in becomes settled.
There
is such a thing called “an idea of the moment.” That’s when someone has an idea
or thought about something out of the blue. Some people express that thought
through words and some express it through action. Because the words and action
are the result of an idea or thought of the moment, they are temporary and will
not continue to form something.
But
if it is a part of a long time plan, the case will carry through just as how a
plan will be accomplished one by one. So when we think about it, this book is
prophesying about the end of this world because there was “the Lord’s day”
prophecy in the book Joel as well as in Zechariah which we will look at soon.
These
prophecies are not just to be left alone. These prophets as well as Jesus
Christ who walked on this earth 500, 600 years ago prophesied about “the day,”
telling us specifically what kind of things will happen. Furthermore,
Revelation, which is the last book of the Bible, touches upon the last days of
this world.
That
is why, what the Bible as whole is telling us is that, to tell you the truth,
we are living in a time where the Lord’s day can be today or tomorrow.
The
Mayan civilization flourished in southeast Mexico 2500 years ago. The Mayan’s
used a calendar; and according to this calendar this earth was suppose to end
on December 21 of last year. Some people took this seriously and went through
much difficulty like making a shelter.
However,
as you are aware, we’re here today-and nothing like that happened. The end of
the world ended up not happening, so some started saying the world ending on
December 21, 2012 was a miscalculation. They now say that the correct day the
world would end is “March 20, 2020.” In addition, some other people or groups
say that civilization will end due to solar flares in May of 2013. Some say the
Armageddon will be here in 2017, others say the world will end with the
alignment of the planets on March 21, 3797. Yet others have used and will use
words from Revelation and other prophecies from the Bible and groundlessly
calculate the end of the world.
The
more I see and hear about this, I pray from my heart that they will not waste
the precious time of their life by doing such things. I wish they would be free
from such emptiness. On a side note, the Mexican ministry of tourism announced
that the visitor’s to the ruins of the country reached a record of 23 million
due to the end time prophecy of the Mayan calendar and that it also had a
positive affect on the economy.
However,
2000 years ago, Peter already tells us about these things that are happening in
2 Peter: So then, dear friends, since
you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless
and at peace with him. Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation,
just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him.
He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters.
His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and
unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own
destruction. Therefore, dear
friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard so that you may not
be carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from your secure position.
(2 Peter 3:14-17)
There
seemed to be people who would say things about the end of the world even 2000
years ago. Yet, Peter tells us to “be on your guard so that we may not be
carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from our secure position” in
these seesawing times. So what is this secure position? Jesus Christ already
talks about this security 2000 years ago in Matthew 24:35-36: Heaven and earth will pass away, but my
words will never pass away. “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even
the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.
Countless
amounts of individuals have declared the end of the world; yet they were
entirely off. I’m sure many more around the world will predict the end time but
not one of them will guess right. We should not be engrossed in “when the time
is” but need to continue to stand firm in a security of knowing that “no one
knows the hour or day, only the Father.”
At
the same time, aside from the security of knowing that no one but God knows the
end time; one more every important thing we need to be secure in is that Jesus
clearly says that “heaven and earth will
pass away.” Some believe in the transmigration of the soul, that this world
circulates and that we would reincarnate back into this world as something,
even after death. This is like spinning in a circle, there’s no end to it. Yet
the Bible tells us that there’s indeed a beginning and an end to this world.
In
other words, as Genesis tells us, “In
the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1) the last
book of the Bible, Revelation ends with, “Look,
I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person
according to what they have done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and
the Last, the Beginning and the End.” (Revelation 22:12-13)
So
let us talk at the most important point. That is the preparation for “the day”
the Bible talks about. Although we hear to stock up on water, prepare blankets
and flashlights or to make shelter, preparing these lifelines are meaningless
because “the day” talked about in the Bible does not refer to a regional
natural disaster, it is the last day! There’s preparation way more important
than this. It says in the prophecy of Zephaniah:
Gather together, gather yourselves
together, you shameful nation, before the decree takes effect and that day
passes like windblown chaff, before the Lord’s fierce anger comes upon you,
before the day of the Lord’s wrath comes upon you. Seek the Lord, all you
humble of the land, you who do what he commands. Seek righteousness, seek
humility; perhaps you will be sheltered on the day of the Lord’s anger (Zephaniah
2:1-3).
Here,
Zachariah encourages us readers to “humble ourselves, gather together, seek the
Lord, seek righteousness and seek humility” before the decree takes effect and
that day passes like a windblown chaff. It says only then will you be sheltered
on the day of the Lord’s anger.
On
the last Sunday of 2012 we heard in Deuteronomy 8, “Remember all the paths the Lord led you through that year.” We
indeed took a look at remembering all the paths we went through that year. And
why should we remember all these paths? It’s for us to become “humble.” You may
ask why humility? It’s because, we cannot know God without being humble.
And
today, once again, we face the words, “seek humility” as a preparation for the
“Lord’s day.” I’m not forcibly picking these words out today to force upon you
what I talked about the other day. It so happens that Zephaniah, the preplanned
scripture we were covering today, talked about humility.
Like
so, we sometimes experience in our life, the same message the Bible continually
tells us. Like for some reason hearing something we’ve heard so much about
recently; these things happen to us a lot. Some may call this “coincidence,”
but if we were to embrace this with faith, this is surely God talking to us. So
as words spoken to us at the end of the year as well as the beginning, let us
cherish these things: to seek humility, and by this “learning more about God”
which leads to “being sheltered from escape.”
It’s
human nature to sentimentally seek comforting words. We find pleasure in
hearing agreeable stories. But the church pulpit will not be a place where
God’s words are given to us anymore, if only pleasant stories were preached.
There’s
a pastor called George Toda in our religious community. And over ten years ago,
I received an ordinance here at this pulpit by him which I still cannot forget
to this day. He told us who were becoming pastors to not only talk about
stories like the “Chicken Soup” (I’m not sure if you’re familiar with it but
it’s a book full of heart-warming touching stories). George himself must have
learned this through his long career as a preacher. I can never forget these
words.
“You’re
good just the way you are,” “You will be financially wealthy if you have
faith,” “You can become someone who you’ve always wished to be,” “There are no
problems in this world,” “You’re alright.” All these are pleasant to our ears.
I hear that there’s a church in the U.S. that has been attracting
people and growing due to preaching stories like these. Though thorough
explanation is necessary, these things are not completely wrong. But as I was
saying today, those pastors will be blamed when that day comes, if they have
not talked about “how to prepare” for “that day” or even worse not talked about
“that day” at all. They will be cursed, why did you only talk about the good
things in the world and not the most important thing. Talking about the end of
the world is noise to the ears who don’t care about anything but “having a fun
time now” and a bother those who “are so busy with their life right now to even
think about those things.” But I must tell you because it is written in the
Bible. We must understand this and occasionally make sure where we stand firmly
in front of the Lord. Now, I’d like to read the detailed word’s of Jesus Christ
talking about “that day” the prophecy in Zephaniah talks about. It’s a little
long but please bare with me.
3 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of
Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will
this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the
age?” 4 Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. 5 For many will
come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many. 6 You
will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed.
Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 7 Nation will rise
against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and
earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of birth pains. 9
“Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will
be hated by all nations because of me. 10 At that time many will turn away from
the faith and will betray and hate each other, 11 and many false prophets will
appear and deceive many people. 12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the
love of most will grow cold, 13 but the one who stands firm to the end will be
saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as
a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.
29 “Immediately after the distress of those
days “‘the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the
stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’ 30 “Then
will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of
the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of
heaven, with power and great glory. 31 And he will send his angels with a loud
trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end
of the heavens to the other. 32 “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon
as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near.
33 Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at
the door. 34 Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away
until all these things have happened. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but
my words will never pass away. 36 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not
even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 37 As it was in
the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For in the
days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in
marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39 and they knew nothing about
what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it
will be at the coming of the Son of Man (Matthew 24:3-39).
If
we knew for certain what day it would be, we would be able to prepare for it.
But no one knows the day. It will suddenly take place in the midst of a regular
day. That means it could be today or tomorrow. If that’s true, when should we
start our preparation? It should definitely start today.
Jesus
Christ stood and faced trial in front of the high priests, elders and the
rabbis. Jesus could have avoided the trial of being put on the cross by
speaking up. Now the high priest asked Jesus “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?” (Mark 14:61)
Jesus could have remained silent and not have said anything. But Jesus
confidently said, “I am, And you will
see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on
the clouds of heaven” (Mark 14:62). These were the fatal words. When the
high priest heard this he tore his clothes in anger. And the high priests and
all who were there condemned him as worthy of death. He was crucified because
of those words. In other words, Christ put his life on the line because of
these words.
The
Bible’s prophecy ends here. Many people have taken words from the Bible and
said that they have found the day. Yet, though I’ve said it before, no one
knows of the day. You may say, but it’s already been 2000 years since the time
of Jesus. Yes, 2000 years is long. But Peter says:
8 But do not forget this one thing, dear
friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are
like a day. 9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand
slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but
everyone to come to repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a
thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed
by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare. 11 Since
everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be?
You ought to live holy and godly lives 12 as you look forward to the day of God
and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens
by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. 13 But in keeping with his
promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where
righteousness dwells. 14 So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward
to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with
him. 15 Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation, just as our dear
brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him (2 Peter
3:18-15).
Do
you know the very first words Jesus Christ said when he started his public life?
Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, “The time has come, the kingdom
of God has come near.
Repent and believe the good news!” (Mark 1:15). “Seek the Lord, all you humble of the land, you who do what he commands.
When we hear these words, we understand the words of Zephaniah prophesied
600 years before Jesus. Seek
righteousness, seek humility; perhaps you will be sheltered on the day of the
Lord’s anger.” These words of Zephaniah say the same thing Jesus Christ
said, “Repent and believe in the good news.” It’s because humbling yourself and
seeking the Lord’s righteousness really means to repent.
As a
pastor, I am truly thankful for the opportunity to talk to you about “the
Lord’s day” today. At least God the Father won’t ask me, “What were you
preaching while you were on earth?” I tossed the ball. Now it is your turn to
catch it. I would like to end this message with the words Jesus Christ said so
often. “If anyone has ears to hear, let them hear.”
