John the Baptist: Pointing People to Jesus
バプテスマのヨハネ：人々をイエスへと導く

Last Sunday, Pastor Okura gave a message focused on Zachariah and Elizabeth. 先週の日曜日、大倉牧師はザカリアとエリサベツに焦点を当てたメッセージを語りました。
They are mentioned early on in the Gospel of Luke and are introduced as a couple that is of the priestly line of Aaron. 彼らはルカの福音書の冒頭で言及され、アロンの祭司の家系に属する夫婦として紹介されています。
It is noted that they were an elderly couple and had no children. 彼らは高齢の夫婦であり、子供がいなかったことが記されています。
However, through God’s intervention, they are given a son in their old age. しかし、神様の介入によって、彼らは老齢期に息子を授かります。
Their son, John, also known as “John the Baptist” is who we will be looking together at today. その息子、ヨハネ、すなわち「バプテスマのヨハネ」こそが、今日私たちが共に学ぶ人です。
Have you ever wondered why you were born into this world at the time you did and are living in the place that you are right now? あなたはかつて、なぜ自分がこの世に生まれたのか、なぜ今この場所に生きているのか、考えたことがありますか？
Have you ever wondered how you have come into contact with certain people and now know these people and have a relationship with them? なぜ特定の人々と出会い、知り合い、関係を築くことになったのか、考えたことはありますか？
These relationships could be intimate or casual, の関係は親密なものもあれば、ささいなものもあるでしょうし、
but still you have people in your life that you have come into contact with and know amongst the billions of people in the world. しかしそれでも、世界の何十億もの人の中から、あなたの人生に現れ、知り合った人達が確かに存在します。
Have you ever wondered how you “bump into people” you did not expect to see? 予期せぬ人々と「偶然、出会う」ことについて考えたことはありますか？
Have you ever experienced the amazing blessing of meeting someone at a specific place at a specific time? 特定の場所と時間に誰かと出会うという驚くべき恵みを経験したことはありますか？
Yes, there are planned meetings, but there are also so-called “unplanned” meetings. そう、 計画的な出会いもあれば、いわゆる「計画されていなかった出会い」も存在するのです。
Several years ago, as in before I was even married, I was in Tokyo and I suddenly had an urge to eat Mexican food. 数年前、まだ結婚する前のことですが、東京にいた私は突然メキシコ料理が食べたくなりました。
So, I went to a Mexican restaurant called La Jolla. そこで「ラ・ホヤ」というメキシコ料理店に行ったのです
Who did I bump into there? そこで誰に会ったと思いますか？
My best friend from high school. After graduating from high school, I went to UCSD and he went to Harvard. 私の高校時代の親友です。高校卒業後、私はUCSDへ、彼はハーバードへ進みました。
I didn’t even know he was in Japan. This was the first time we saw each other after many years. 彼が日本にいることすら知りませんでした。実に何年ぶりかの再会だったのです。
Coincidence? 偶然でしょうか？
In 1989, I went to Japan to work. I got a job at an export and import trading company. １１９８９年、私は仕事で日本へ渡りました。輸出入商社に就職したのです。
That company then sent me to set up a medical device manufacturing company in Torrance. その後、その会社からトーランスに医療機器製造会社を設立するよう派遣されました。
Growing up in San Diego, I had no desire whatsoever to work in the Los Angeles area. サンディエゴ育ちの私には、ロサンゼルス地域で働く気は微塵もありませんでした。
There, I met Yunike for the first time when I started attending a church in that area. そこで、その地域の教会に通い始めた時に初めてユニケに出会いました。
Coincidence? 偶然でしょうか？
At the beginning of this month, I got to go to Hawaii for the first time in 12 years for the Holiness Conference’s General Assembly. 今月初め、１２年ぶりにハワイへ行き、ホーリネス教団の総会に出席しました。
Yunike and I got to enjoy time together with Duncan and Yuki going around the island of Oahu, before and after the General Assembly. 総会前後にはユニケとダンカン、ユキと一緒にオアフ島を回り、楽しい時間を過ごしました。
On one of our excursions, we drove up to the North Shore, which is famous for great surfing, shaved ice, shrimp trucks, and the “HE>i” store.その旅行では、素晴らしいサーフィン、かき氷、シュリンプトラック、そして「HE>i」ストアで知られるノースショアまで運転しました。
Anyway, we got to visit with Pastor Jacob Pierce who is the senior pastor of the Sunset Beach Christian Church near the Banzai Pipeline (one of the surfing meccas of the world). そして、世界有数のサーフィンの聖地であるバンザイ・パイプライン近くのサンセットビーチ・クリスチャン教会の主任牧師、ジェイコブ・ピアース牧師を訪ねる機会を得ました。
No, we did not go there to go surfing! いいえ、サーフィンをしに行ったわけではありません！
Duncan and Yuki knew Pastor Jacob and that church, because they had helped out with Hume Youth Camps in Oahu in the past. ダンカンとユキは、過去にオアフ島でヒューム・ユースキャンプを手伝ったことがあり、ジェイコブ牧師とその教会を知っていました。
However, for Yunike and me, this was the first time we were meeting with Pastor Jacob at that church. しかし、ユニケと私にとって、その教会でジェイコブ牧師にお会いするのは初めてのことでした。
Well, here is where it gets really interesting. さて、ここからが本当に面白いところです。
While we were visiting with Pastor Jacob, we found out that a couple that we knew was coming in from the U.S. mainland that day to the church. ジェイコブ牧師と話をしている最中、私たちが知っているある夫婦がその日、アメリカ本土から教会に来ることを知りました。
This couple was someone that all of us knew, because we were together in Japan in the summer of 2023, serving at the English Camp in Tokyo with Burton and Kat Sue.この夫婦は私たち全員が知っている人たちで、というのも私達は２０２３年の夏に日本で一緒に過ごし、バートンとキャット・スーと共に東京の英語キャンプで奉仕していたからです。
Blaze and Rachel McEntee serve at a church in Escondido, but it was the first time we were seeing them again since we ministered together in Japan. ブレイズとレイチェル・マッケンティー夫妻はエスコンディードの教会で奉仕していますが、日本で共に奉仕して以来の再会でした。

One more special encounter. もう一つ特別な出会いがありました。
On the Sunday after the General Assembly, Yunike and I had the blessing of attending the ninth anniversary worship service of the Selah Praise house church. 総会が終わった日曜日に、ユニケと私はセラ賛美家庭教会の９周年記念礼拝に出席する恵みをいただきました。
This ministry is lead by Pastor Yuji and Mrs. Chieko Nakamura. Pastor Nakamura is a retired Nichigo pastor of the Holiness Conference. このミニストリーは中村雄司牧師と千恵子夫人がリードしています。中村牧師はホーリネス教団の引退した日語牧師です。
It is a unique worship service, in that it is done on Zoom. それはとてもユニークな礼拝で、ズームで行われます。
So, Pastor Nakamura and his wife, along with a bassist and his wife, meet in the living room of the Nakamura’s house, while others join in on Zoom. 中村牧師ご夫妻とベーシストとその奥様が中村宅のリビングに集まり、他の参加者はズームで参加するのです。
On that day, we joined them in that living room. その日、私たちは実際にそのリビングに同席しました。
Well, here is where it gets really interesting. さて、ここからが本当に興味深い点です。
While different people were joining the worship service by Zoom, we noticed that the Tucson church joined as well. 様々な人々がズームで礼拝に参加する中、ツーソン教会も同様に接続していることに気づいたのです。
They were joining in as a church group, so we could see them sitting in pews of a church sanctuary in Tucson, Arizona. 彼らは教会グループとして参加していたので、アリゾナ州ツーソンの教会堂の席に座っている彼らの姿が見えました。
Next thing we knew, one of the Tucson church leaders says, “Today, we have a student from San Diego who is with us for the first time.” すると突然、ツーソンの教会リーダーの一人がこう言いました。「本日はサンディエゴから初めて参加してくださっている学生がいます」
And then, guess who walks up to the camera? そして、カメラに向かって歩み寄ってきたのは誰だと思いますか？
The student on the other side says, “Hi, I’m Matthew Stokes.”向こう側にいた学生が「こんにちは、マシュー・ストークスです」と言ったのです。
Two people from the same church in different states seeing each other in the same worship service that each one is attending for the first time. 異なる州にある同じ教会の二人が、それぞれ初めて参加した礼拝で顔を合わせたのです。
Coincidence? 偶然でしょうか？
If we believe that God is sovereign, that is He is in control of all things, and that He is good, then we can say that there are no coincidences in our life that are a blessing to us. もし神様が主権者であり、万物を支配し、善なるお方だと信じるなら、私たちの人生における祝福となる出来事に偶然は存在しないと言えるでしょう。
We can see our lives and our relationships as being a part of God’s perfect plan and time. 私たちの人生と人間関係は、神の完璧な計画と時の一部であると捉えることができるのです。
We live right now, where we are, with the people around us, according to God’s plan and perfect time. 私たちは今この瞬間、この場所で、周囲の人々と共に、神の計画と完璧な時に従って生きているのです。
Therefore, let us be thankful for the life that we have and the place that He has planted us, and enjoy our time with the people that God has brought into our lives. それゆえ、私たちが与えられた命と、神が私たちを置いてくださった場所に感謝し、神が私たちの人生に導いてくださった人々と過ごす時を楽しみましょう。
The timing of John the Baptist’s birth was according to God’s perfect plan and time. バプテスマのヨハネの誕生の時期は、神の完全なる計画と時によるものでした。
He was born six months before Jesus Christ was born. 彼はイエス・キリストの誕生の六か月前に生まれました。
It is no coincidence that he was born right before Jesus Christ was born. イエス・キリストの誕生直前に彼が生まれたのは決して偶然ではありません。
In fact, it is fair to say that John’s life was strongly tied together with Jesus’ life. 実際、ヨハネの人生はイエス様の人生と強く結びついていたと言っても過言ではありません。
There was a special bond between the two of them that was ordained by God long before they both entered onto the scene of human history. 二人の間には、彼らが人類の歴史の舞台に現れるずっと前から神によって定められていた特別な絆があったのです。
One of the first encounters that John the Baptist had with Jesus was when they were both in their mother’s wombs. バプテスマのヨハネがイエス様と初めて出会った瞬間の一つは、二人がまだ母胎の中にいた時でした。
In the Gospel of Luke, it is recorded of how sixth months after Elizabeth became pregnant, ルカの福音書には、エリサベツが妊娠してから六か月後、
the angel Gabriel was sent from God to the virgin Mary to tell her that she will conceive by the Holy Spirit, Jesus, the Son of God.神の御使いガブリエルが処女マリアのもとに遣わされ、聖霊によって神の御子イエスを身ごもることを告げたことが記されています。
Luke also records that Mary went to visit her relative Elizabeth after this, and describes that encounter between the two. ルカはまた、この後マリアが親族のエリサベツを訪ねたこと、そして二人の出会いを描いています。
Luke 1:39-45（ルカ１章３９節—４５節）
39 At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, 40 where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! 43 But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!” 39そのころ、マリヤは立って、大急ぎで山里へむかいユダの町に行き、40ザカリヤの家にはいってエリサベツにあいさつした。41エリサベツがマリヤのあいさつを聞いたとき、その子が胎内でおどった。エリサベツは聖霊に満たされ、42声高く叫んで言った、「あなたは女の中で祝福されたかた、あなたの胎の実も祝福されています。43主の母上がわたしのところにきてくださるとは、なんという光栄でしょう。44ごらんなさい。あなたのあいさつの声がわたしの耳にはいったとき、子供が胎内で喜びおどりました。45主のお語りになったことが必ず成就すると信じた女は、なんとさいわいなことでしょう」。
Two specially chosen women of God with two specially chosen babies in their wombs. 神様に選ばれた二人の女性が、それぞれの胎内に選ばれた二人の子を宿していました。
John leaped for joy in hearing the voice of the mother who carried Jesus in her womb. イエス様を胎内に宿した母の声を聞いた時、ヨハネは喜びのあまり胎内で跳ねました。
After John was born, his father Zachariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied. ヨハネが生まれた後、父ザカリヤは聖霊に満たされ、預言しました。
Included in his prophecy was the work that his son would do in relationship to the Lord Jesus. その預言には、息子が主イエスとの関係において成し遂げる働きが含まれていました。
Luke 1:76-79（ルカ１章７６節—７９節）
76 And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for Him, 77 to give His people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins, 78 because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven 79 to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace.” 76幼な子よ、あなたは、いと高き者の預言者と呼ばれるであろう。主のみまえに先立って行き、その道を備え、77罪のゆるしによる救をその民に知らせるのであるから。78これはわたしたちの神のあわれみ深いみこころによる。また、そのあわれみによって、日の光が上からわたしたちに臨み、79暗黒と死の陰とに住む者を照し、わたしたちの足を平和の道へ導くであろう」。
Here, it is clearly stated of John’s ministry as a prophet of God. ここにはヨハネが神の預言者としてなす働きについて明確に述べられています。
He was to go on before the Lord to prepare the way for Him. 彼は主に先立って行き、主の道を備える人でした。
And when we see John next as a grown adult, we see him fully engaged in his ministry of preparing the way for Jesus. そして次に成長した大人としてのヨハネを見ると、彼はイエス様の道を備える働きに完全に従事している姿を見ることができます。
Luke 3:3-6（ルカ３章３節—６節）
3 And he came into all the district around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins; 4 as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make ready the way of the Lord, make His paths straight. 5 ‘Every ravine will be filled, and every mountain and hill will be brought low; the crooked will become straight, and the rough roads smooth; 6 and all flesh will see the salvation of God.’” 3彼はヨルダンのほとりの全地方に行って、罪のゆるしを得させる悔改めのバプテスマを宣べ伝えた。4それは、預言者イザヤの言葉の書に書いてあるとおりである。すなわち「荒野で呼ばわる者の声がする、『主の道を備えよ、その道筋をまっすぐにせよ』。5すべての谷は埋められ、すべての山と丘とは、平らにされ、曲ったところはまっすぐに、わるい道はならされ、6人はみな神の救を見るであろう」。
John’s message was a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. ヨハネのメッセージは、罪の赦しのための悔い改めの洗礼でした。
This was according to the Old Testament prophecy found in the Book of Isaiah, specifically 40:3-5. それは旧約聖書のイザヤ書、特に４０章３節から５節にある預言に基づいていました。
John’s role was to make ready the way of the Lord; to prepare a straight path for the coming Christ. ヨハネの役割は、主の道を整えること、すなわち来るべきキリストのためにまっすぐな道を備えることでした。
It meant preparing the hearts of the people, so that their hearts would be ready; have a clear path to receiving the Christ. それは人々の心を整え、彼らの心が備えられ、キリストを受け入れるための明確な道を持つようにすることでした。
John spoke in the manner of the Old Testament prophets that spoke with authority and pointed out the need for a repentant heart that manifested itself in a changed life. ヨハネは旧約の預言者たちのように権威をもって語り、悔い改めた心が生活の変化として現れる必要性を指摘しました。
Luke 3:7-9（ルカ３章７節—９節）
7 So he began saying to the crowds who were going out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Therefore bear fruits in keeping with repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham for our father,’ for I say to you that from these stones God is able to raise up children to Abraham. 9 Indeed the axe is already laid at the root of the trees; so every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.” 7さて、ヨハネは、彼からバプテスマを受けようとして出てきた群衆にむかって言った、「まむしの子らよ、迫ってきている神の怒りから、のがれられると、おまえたちにだれが教えたのか。8だから、悔改めにふさわしい実を結べ。自分たちの父にはアブラハムがあるなどと、心の中で思ってもみるな。おまえたちに言っておく。神はこれらの石ころからでも、アブラハムの子を起すことができるのだ。9斧がすでに木の根もとに置かれている。だから、良い実を結ばない木はことごとく切られて、火の中に投げ込まれるのだ」。
When some of these people he was speaking to, began wondering if John was the Christ, he made it clear that he was not. 彼が話していた人々のうち、何人かがヨハネがキリストではないかと疑い始めた時、彼は自分がそうではないことを明らかにしました。
Luke 3:15-17（ルカ３章１５節—１７節）
15 Now while the people were in a state of expectation and all were wondering in their hearts about John, as to whether he was the Christ, 16 John answered and said to them all, “As for me, I baptize you with water; but One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to untie the thong of His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fork is in His hand to thoroughly clear His threshing floor, and to gather the wheat into His barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” 15民衆は救主を待ち望んでいたので、みな心の中でヨハネのことを、もしかしたらこの人がそれではなかろうかと考えていた。16そこでヨハネはみんなの者にむかって言った、「わたしは水でおまえたちにバプテスマを授けるが、わたしよりも力のあるかたが、おいでになる。わたしには、そのくつのひもを解く値うちもない。このかたは、聖霊と火とによっておまえたちにバプテスマをお授けになるであろう。17また、箕を手に持って、打ち場の麦をふるい分け、麦は倉に納め、からは消えない火で焼き捨てるであろう」。
It is very clear from this passage of Scripture that John fully understood who he was in relationship to the Christ. この聖書の箇所から、ヨハネがキリストとの関係において自分が誰であるかを完全に理解していたことが明らかです。
It is also clear that John knew that Jesus was the Christ. また、ヨハネがイエス様がキリストであることを知っていたことも明らかです。
Matthew 3:13-17（マタイ３章１３節—１７節）
13 Then Jesus arrived from Galilee at the Jordan coming to John, to be baptized by him. 14 But John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I have need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me?” 15 But Jesus answering said to him, “Permit it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he permitted Him. 16 After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him, 17 and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.” 13そのときイエスは、ガリラヤを出てヨルダン川に現れ、ヨハネのところにきて、バプテスマを受けようとされた。14ところがヨハネは、それを思いとどまらせようとして言った、「わたしこそあなたからバプテスマを受けるはずですのに、あなたがわたしのところにおいでになるのですか」。15しかし、イエスは答えて言われた、「今は受けさせてもらいたい。このように、すべての正しいことを成就するのは、われわれにふさわしいことである」。そこでヨハネはイエスの言われるとおりにした。16イエスはバプテスマを受けるとすぐ、水から上がられた。すると、見よ、天が開け、神の御霊がはとのように自分の上に下ってくるのを、ごらんになった。17また天から声があって言った、「これはわたしの愛する子、わたしの心にかなう者である」。
This baptism of Jesus by John was important for John just as much as it was important for Jesus. ヨハネによるイエス様の洗礼は、イエス様にとって重要であったのと同様に、ヨハネにとっても重要なものでした。
This is because John was able to witness the Spirit of God descending as a dove upon Jesus and hear God’s voice affirming that Jesus was His beloved Son. なぜなら、ヨハネは神の霊が鳩のようにイエス様の上に降りるのを目撃し、神様がイエス様を御子と認める声を聞くことができたからです。
Thus, John was better able to prepare the way for Jesus and point people to Jesus even more effectively and confidently. こうしてヨハネは、より効果的かつ確信を持って、イエス様の道を備え、人々をイエスへと導くことができたのです。
We see this especially in the Gospel of John’s account of the interactions between John the Baptist and Jesus. このことは特に、ヨハネによる福音書に記された洗礼者ヨハネとイエス様の交流の記述に見てとれます。
Here is how the apostle John described John the Baptist at the beginning of his Gospel. 使徒ヨハネが福音書の冒頭でバプテスマのヨハネをこう描写しています。
John 1:6-8（ヨハネ１章６節—８節）
6 There came a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness, to testify about the Light, so that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light. 6ここにひとりの人があって、神からつかわされていた。その名をヨハネと言った。7この人はあかしのためにきた。光についてあかしをし、彼によってすべての人が信じるためである。8彼は光ではなく、ただ、光についてあかしをするためにきたのである。
John the Baptist is described as being a witness to testify about Jesus being the Light, so that people might believe Jesus. バプテスマのヨハネは、イエス様が光であることを証しする証人として描かれており、それは人々がイエス様を信じるようになるためでした。
In fact, the apostle John recorded in his Gospel the manner in which he himself was led to follow Jesus through John the Baptist’s testimony. 実際に使徒ヨハネは自身の福音書において、バプテスマのヨハネの証しを通して自らイエス様に従うに至った経緯を記録しています。
John 1:29-37（ヨハネ１章２９節—３７節）
29 The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is He on behalf of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.’ 31 I did not recognize Him, but so that He might be manifested to Israel, I came baptizing in water.” 32 John testified saying, “I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him. 33 I did not recognize Him, but He who sent me to baptize in water said to me, ‘He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, this is the One who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.’ 34 I myself have seen, and have testified that this is the Son of God.” 35 Again the next day John was standing with two of his disciples, 36 and he looked at Jesus as He walked, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” 37 The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 29その翌日、ヨハネはイエスが自分の方にこられるのを見て言った、「見よ、世の罪を取り除く神の小羊。30『わたしのあとに来るかたは、わたしよりもすぐれたかたである。わたしよりも先におられたからである』とわたしが言ったのは、この人のことである。31わたしはこのかたを知らなかった。しかし、このかたがイスラエルに現れてくださるそのことのために、わたしはきて、水でバプテスマを授けているのである」。32ヨハネはまたあかしをして言った、「わたしは、御霊がはとのように天から下って、彼の上にとどまるのを見た。33わたしはこの人を知らなかった。しかし、水でバプテスマを授けるようにと、わたしをおつかわしになったそのかたが、わたしに言われた、『ある人の上に、御霊が下ってとどまるのを見たら、その人こそは、御霊によってバプテスマを授けるかたである』。34わたしはそれを見たので、このかたこそ神の子であると、あかしをしたのである」。35その翌日、ヨハネはまたふたりの弟子たちと一緒に立っていたが、36イエスが歩いておられるのに目をとめて言った、「見よ、神の小羊」。37そのふたりの弟子は、ヨハネがそう言うのを聞いて、イエスについて行った。
It mentions in this passage of Scripture, two disciples of John the Baptist, that when they heard that Jesus was the Lamb of God, they followed Jesus. この聖書箇所では、バプテスマのヨハネの二人の弟子が、イエス様が神の小羊であると聞いた時、イエス様に従ったと記していす。
Later it is recorded that one of these disciples was Andrew, while the other unnamed disciple was the apostle John who recorded these things. その後、この弟子たちのうちの一人はアンドレであり、もう一人は、これらのことを記録した使徒ヨハネであったと記されています。
Because John the Baptist truly knew he was called by God to be a witness to point people to Jesus, バプテスマのヨハネは、自分がイエス様を人々に指し示す証人として神に召されたことを真に知っていたため、

John the Baptist understood that he was not at the center of God’s work of salvation. バプテスマの ヨハネは、自分が神の救いの業の中心ではないことを理解していたのです。
The Savior was Jesus, and he was Jesus’ attendant like a friend of the bridegroom. 救い主はイエス様であり、彼は花婿の友人のようにイエス様の付き人でした。
John the Baptist also understood the difference between his origin and Jesus’ origin. バプテスマのヨハネはまた、自身の起源とイエス様の起源の違いを理解していました。
Jesus as the Son of God was from above, that is heaven. 神の子であるイエス様は上、すなわち天から来ました。
John the Baptist knew that he himself was a mere mortal chosen by God to testify that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, バプテスマのヨハネは、自分は神に選ばれた単なる人間であり、イエス様がキリスト、神の子であることを証しし、
so that those who believe Jesus would receive eternal life. イエス様を信じる者が永遠の命を受けるようにするためであることを知っていました。
Thereafter, John the Baptist was imprisoned for speaking out against king Herod marrying his brother’s wife, and eventually he was beheaded. その後、バプテスマのヨハネは、ヘロデ王が兄弟の妻と結婚したことを非難したために投獄され、ついに斬首されました。
However, while he was still in prison, he sent to Jesus a question. しかし、獄中にいた彼は、イエス様に一つの問いを送り届けました。
This probably came at a time in his life in which he was in a state of depression like the prophet Elijah had found himself in (1 Kings 19). これはおそらく、預言者エリヤが陥ったような（列王記上１９章）、彼の生涯において憂鬱な状態にあった時期のことでした。

John like many others at that time were waiting with anticipation of the Christ setting them free from the bondage of Roman oppression. 当時の多くの人々と同様に、ヨハネもまた、キリストがローマの圧政という束縛から彼らを解放してくれることを期待して待ち望んでいたのです。
John being imprisoned and most likely in chains must have wondered if he was going to see such freedom in his lifetime. 投獄され、おそらく鎖につながれていたヨハネは、自分の生涯のうちにそのような自由を見られるかどうか疑問に思ったに違いありません。
We do not know of how John received Jesus’ reply to his question. ヨハネが自分の問いに対するイエス様の答えをどのように受け取ったかは、私達にはわかりません。
However, we do get to hear Jesus’ tribute to John. しかし、私達はイエス様がヨハネに捧げた賛辞を聞くことができます。

Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John, “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? 8 But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Those who wear soft clothing are in kings’ palaces! 9 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and one who is more than a prophet. 10 This is the one about whom it is written, ‘Behold, I send My messenger ahead of You, who will prepare Your way before You.’ 11 Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist! Jesus made it very clear that John was a specially chosen prophet of God who was sent to prepare the way for Him. イエス様は、ヨハネが神様に特別に選ばれた預言者であり、御自身の道を備えるために遣わされたことを、はっきりと示しました。
Jesus’ reference to John himself being Elijah who was to come, points to the very last words of the Old Testament. イエス様がヨハネ自身を「来たるべきエリヤ」と呼んだことは、旧約聖書の最後の言葉に指し示されています。
Malachi 4:5-6（マラキ書４章５節—６節）
5 “Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the Lord. 6 He will restore the hearts of the fathers to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers, so that I will not come and smite the land with a curse.” 5「見よ、主の大いなる恐るべき日が来る前に、わたしは預言者エリヤをあなたがたにつかわす。6彼は父の心をその子供たちに向けさせ、子供たちの心をその父に向けさせる。これはわたしが来て、のろいをもってこの国を撃つことのないようにするためである」。
Thus, according to God’s perfect plan and time, John was sent to do the work as a prophet before Jesus was sent, したがって、神様の完全なる計画と時により、イエス様が遣わされる前にヨハネが預言者として遣わされたのは、
so that he might prepare the way for people to repent and believe Jesus. 人々が悔い改めイエスを信じるための道を備えるためでした。
In the hand of God, we too can have a significant part in His overarching work of salvation, which always revolves around Jesus. 神様の御手の中にある私達も、常にイエス様を中心に展開する神の救いの大いなる御業において、重要な役割を担うことができます。
We too can prepare the way for people to repent and to believe in Jesus by testifying to the truth concerning Him. 私達もまた、イエス様に関する真理を証しすることで、人々が悔い改めイエス様を信じるための道を備えることができるのです。
We can be like John the Baptist by pointing people to Jesus and telling them that He is the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world. 私達はバプテスマのヨハネのように、人々をイエスに導き、「このお方は世の罪を取り除く神の小羊です」と告げ知らせることができるのです。
We too can have the attitude of “He must increase, but I must decrease,” in order to seek Jesus’ kingdom and righteousness above our own ministries and successes. 私達もまた、「彼は必ず栄え、わたしは衰える」という姿勢を持ち、自らの奉仕や成功よりも、イエス様の御国と義を追い求めることができます。
Last weekend, I had the blessed opportunity to officiate a celebration of life service. 先週末、私は祝福された機会に、追悼礼拝を執り行うことができました。
The family chose for that service, 2 Corinthians 5:1-19 in the New Living Translation as the Scripture Reading. ご遺族はその礼拝で、聖書朗読として新共同訳聖書によるコリントの信徒への手紙二 ５章１節から１９節を選びました。
Let me read the first half of that passage. その文章の前半を読み上げます。
2 Corinthians 5:1-10（第二コリント５章１節—１０節）
1 For we know that when this earthly tent we live in is taken down (that is, when we die and leave this earthly body), we will have a house in heaven, an eternal body made for us by God himself and not by human hands. 2 We grow weary in our present bodies, and we long to put on our heavenly bodies like new clothing. 3 For we will put on heavenly bodies; we will not be spirits without bodies. 4 While we live in these earthly bodies, we groan and sigh, but it’s not that we want to die and get rid of these bodies that clothe us. Rather, we want to put on our new bodies so that these dying bodies will be swallowed up by life. 5 God himself has prepared us for this, and as a guarantee he has given us his Holy Spirit. 6 So we are always confident, even though we know that as long as we live in these bodies we are not at home with the Lord. 7 For we live by believing and not by seeing. 8 Yes, we are fully confident, and we would rather be away from these earthly bodies, for then we will be at home with the Lord. 9 So whether we are here in this body or away from this body, our goal is to please him. 10 For we must all stand before Christ to be judged. I had read this passage of Scripture many times before, but as I prepared for that service, I was truly struck by the powerful work of God in those who are given life in Christ. この聖句は以前にも何度も読んだことがありましたが、その追悼礼拝の準備をしている時、キリストにあって命を与えられた者たちの中に働く神の力強い御業に、私は深く心を打たれました。
This passage of Scripture reminds us of the temporary and trying nature of our life here on this earth and the blessings of a life lived with God and an eternity together with Him in heaven.この聖句は、この地上での私たちの人生が一時的で試練に満ちたものであること、そして神と共に歩む人生と天国で神と共に過ごす永遠の祝福を私たちに思い起こさせてくれます。
Here, we can see clearly why and how God gives us the ministry of reconciliation to point people to God through Jesus Christ. ここで、神様がなぜ、どのようにして私達に和解の務めを与え、イエス・キリストを通して人々を神様へと導くのかが、はっきりと示されています。
For many of us who are here today, maybe we too are growing weary of our earthly bodies and are longing to go to be with the Lord. 今日ここにいる私達の多くも、この地上の肉体に疲れ、主のもとに行くことを切に願っているかもしれません。
Yet, we continue to live by faith in Jesus Christ, それでもなお、私達はイエス・キリストへの信仰によって生き続け、
knowing that we have a responsibility to share with others the hope and joy of living a life together with God through faith in Jesus Christ. イエス・キリストへの信仰を通して神様と共に生きる希望と喜びを他の人々と分かち合う責任があることを知っています。
Jesus Christ died for everyone by going to the cross for our sins, so that those who receive His new life will no longer live for themselves, but will live for Christ, who died and was raised for them. (2 Corinthians 5:15) イエス・キリストがすべての人のために私たちの罪のために十字架で死んだのは、生きている者がもはや自分のためにではなく、自分のために死んでよみがえったかたのために、生きるためである（第二コリント５章１５節）。
For anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! (2 Corinthians 5:17) だれでもキリストにあるならば、その人は新しく造られた者である。古いものは過ぎ去った、見よ、すべてが新しくなったのである（第二コリント５章１７節）。
Our calling is therefore to encourage others to be reconciled to God, 私たちの使命は、他の人々が神と和解するよう促すことです。
that is to repent and come to God through believing in Jesus Christ. すなわち、悔い改め、イエス・キリストを信じることで神のもとに来るように導くことです。
For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ. (2 Corinthians 5:21) 神はわたしたちの罪のために、罪を知らないかたを罪とされた。それは、わたしたちが、彼にあって神の義となるためなのである（第二コリント５章２１節）。
I truly believe that all of us are to prepare the way for others to come to know Jesus. 私達は皆、他の人々がイエス様を知る道を備えるために存在していると心から信じています。
We live right now, where we are, with the people around us, according to God’s plan and perfect time. 私達は今、この場所で、周りの人々と共に、神様の計画と完全な時の中で生きています。
Therefore, let us be thankful for the life that we have and the place that He has planted us, and enjoy our time with the people that God has brought into our lives. ですから、与えられた命と神様が私達を置かれた場所に感謝し、神様が私達の人生に導いてくださった人々との時を楽しみましょう。
And let us point them to Jesus! そして彼らをイエス様へと導きましょう！
