私達が何かを決断して前に進もうとする時、神様は私達にサインを示されるときがあります。すなわち、「そのことは考え直したほうがいい」、「そちらの方向にはいかないほうがいい」、「あなたの言動は慎んだほうがいい」というような時、神様は我々の前にサインを置くのです。そんなことを経験したことがありませんか。

バラム：サインを見逃さない

時はモーセがイスラエルの民の先頭に立ち、約束の地を目指して荒野をさまよっていた時。彼らの行く手、彼らが通過する場所には既に他民族が生活をしていました。その時のことについて民数記はこのよう書き記しています。
1さて、イスラエルの人々はまた道を進んで、エリコに近いヨルダンのかなたのモアブの平野に宿営した。2チッポルの子バラクはイスラエルがアモリびとにしたすべての事を見たので、3モアブは大いにイスラエルの民を恐れた。その数が多かったためである。（民数記２２章１節ー３節）。
モーセとイスラエルの民が荒野を過ぎてモアブの平野に宿営すると、その地域におりましたモアブの王バラクが危機感を感じました。バラクは自らの力を鑑み、その数が多いイスラエルの民に対抗することは難しいと判断し、アンモン人の国のユフラテ川のほとりにいるバラムという異教の国の預言者に使者を遣わしてこう言います『あなたが祝福する者は祝福され、あなたがのろう者はのろわれることを私は知っています』（民数記２２章６節）。そう、彼はバラムにイスラエルをのろうようにと願います（今日は似たような名前が二人でてきますのでお気をつけください。バラク王と預言者バラムです）。
バラクは預言者バラムに「イスラエルの民をのろってくれ」と願うのです。バラムはバラク王からのメッセージを携えてきた使者からそのことを聞き、彼らにこう言います。8「今夜ここに泊まりなさい。主がわたしに告げられるとおりに、あなたがたに返答しましょう」（民数記２２章８）。
そしてこのことに対して神はバラムにこう語りかけます「12あなたは彼らと一緒に行ってはならない。またその民をのろってはならない。彼らは祝福された者だからである」（民数記２２章１２節）。
翌朝、バラムがこのことを使者に告げますと、彼らはバラクのもとに戻り、主がお許しにならなかったのでバラムは来なかったと伝えます。それを聞いたバラクは諦めきれずに、前の者よりも身分の高いつかさ達を、より多く遣わし、再度バラムに伝えます。16「どんな妨げをも顧みず、どうぞわたしのところへおいでください。17わたしはあなたを大いに優遇します。そしてあなたがわたしに言われる事はなんでもいたします。どうぞきてわたしのためにこの民をのろってください」。（民数記２２章１６節ー１７節）。これに対してバラムはどうしたでしょうか。
バラムはバラクの家来たちに答えます。「18たといバラクがその家に満ちるほどの金銀をわたしに与えようとも、事の大小を問わず、わたしの神、主の言葉を越えては何もすることができません。19それで、どうぞ、あなたがたも今夜ここにとどまって、主がこの上、わたしになんと仰せられるかを確かめさせてください」』（民数記２２章１８節ー１９節）
ここでもバラムは神を畏れているような言葉を語ります。彼は再び「主がなんと仰せられるのか確かめます」と一見、信心深い答えをします。しかし、おそらくその心の中にバラムはバラクから提示されている金銀と優遇に心が惹かれ始めていたようです。なぜなら、最初に使者が彼のもとに来た時に神様は既に「彼らと共に行ってはならない」と告げているのですから、彼は再度「神に問うから待て」と言う必要はなかったはずなのです。
主の御心は既に明らかであるのに、自分の心には自分の思いと願いがあるので、再び主に確かめようとする。このことは私たちが神様に何かを願い祈る時の心と重なります。そうです、「神の御心がなりますように」と口で言っておきながら、その御心が自分の思いや願いと異なると、それを諦めきれずに、神の御心を自分の願いとどうにかすりあわせたり、無理やり神の御心を何かにこじつけて、結局自分がしたいこと、やりたいことをする、そんな心が確かに私達にもあります。さぁ、バラムはどうなったのでしょうか。
20夜になり、神はバラムに臨んで言われた、「この人々はあなたを招きにきたのだから、立ってこの人々と一緒に行きなさい。ただしわたしが告げることだけを行わなければならない」。21明くる朝起きてバラムは、ろばにくらをおき、モアブのつかさたちと一緒に行った。22しかるに神は彼が行ったために怒りを発せられ、主の使は彼を妨げようとして、道に立ちふさがっていた。バラムは、ろばに乗り、そのしもべふたりも彼と共にいたが、23ろばは主の使が、手に抜き身のつるぎをもって、道に立ちふさがっているのを見、道をそれて畑にはいったので、バラムは、ろばを打って道に返そうとした。24しかるに主の使はまたぶどう畑の間の狭い道に立ちふさがっていた。道の両側には石がきがあった。25ろばは主の使を見て、石がきにすり寄り、バラムの足を石がきに押しつけたので、バラムは、また、ろばを打った。26主の使はまた先に進んで、狭い所に立ちふさがっていた。そこは右にも左にも、曲る道がなかったので、27ろばは主の使を見てバラムの下に伏した。そこでバラムは怒りを発し、つえでろばを打った。
私たちは不思議に思います。神様は確かに前の晩、バラムに「この人々はあなたを招きにきたのだから、立ってこの人々と一緒に行きなさい。ただしわたしが告げることだけを行わなければならない」と言われたからです。ゆえに彼は早朝、準備して出かけていったです。しかし、実際に彼が使者と共に出かけるとなると、神はバラムに怒りを表されたのです。これは一体どういうことなのでしょうか。
神は人間を自由なる者としてとりあつかわれます。その願いを押さえつけてまでもご自身に私達を従わせようとはしません。神が求められるのは私達の心からの従順です。それゆえ神はバラムが自由にその道を選ぶに任せられたのです。しかし、バラムはその自由を自らの欲心のために用いようとしました。
神は当然、人の言動のみならずその心までも知るお方です。翌朝、おそらくバラムは朝早く起き、バラクからもらえるであろう贈答品を思い浮かべながら旅に出たのではないでしょうか。言うまでもなくその心は神の前にはお見通しでした。
早々に準備を整えたバラムがロバに乗り、バラクの元に向かおうとしますと主の御使いが抜き身の剣を手にして道に立ちふさがっていました。しかし、バラムにはそれは見えず、その御使いを見たロバは、道をそれて畑に踏み込みました。突然のロバの行動にバラムはロバを打って、道に戻そうとしました。すると今度は主の御使いは、ぶどう畑の間の狭い道に立っていました。ロバは主の御使いを見るや、その道の石垣に体を押しつけ、バラムの足も石垣に押しつけたのです。するとバラムはまた、ロバを打ちました。さらに進むと、剣を手にした主の御使いは、今度は右にも左にもそれる余地のない狭い場所に立ちふさがっていました。ロバはその主の御使いを見るや、バラムを乗せたままもうよけようが無いものですから、とうとうその場にうずくまってしまいました。するとバラムは遂に怒りを燃え上がらせ、本気でロバを杖で打ったというのです。
そうです、災いを避けようとしたロバは、彼にとって自分の願望を邪魔するものに過ぎません。ロバは彼の命の恩人（ロバですが）、彼に罪を犯させまいとする存在なのです。そして、バラムの目が開かれます。そう彼の前に抜き身の剣を持って立ち構えている御使いを彼は見たのです。彼は命を失うところだったのです。
みなさん、私達の人生にもこのような「ロバ」がいます。私たちは誰しもバラムのような思いを持つものです。神の御心といいながら、どうにかして自分の思ったように、願ったものを得ようとする。こじつける。すりあわせる。いったいどれだけのことが神の御心という言葉のもとになされているのでしょうか。
このロバは私たちが何かを決断して前に進もうとする時に、神様が私達に与えてくれる諸々のサインを暗示しています。そう、すなわち、「そのことは考え直したほうがいい」、「そちらの方向にはいかないほうがいい」、「あなたの言動は慎んだほうがいい」というような時、神様は我々の前にロバを置いてくださる。皆さん、そんな心当たりありませんか。
そのロバは誰かの手紙かもしれません。誰かが私達に語ってくれたことかもしれません。それをも聞かずに私達はやりたい放題、突破するかもしれません。しかし、そのあたりで主の前にとどまるべきです。さらに己の我を通すのであるなら、その先に剣が待ち構えているのですから。この主のサインをないがしろにしてはならないのです。
このことがあり、バラムは主の使いに言います。34「わたしは罪を犯しました。あなたがわたしをとどめようとして、道に立ちふさがっておられるのを、わたしは知りませんでした。それで今、もし、お気に召さないのであれば、わたしは帰りましょう」。35主の使はバラムに言った、「この人々と一緒に行きなさい。ただし、わたしが告げることのみを述べなければならない」。こうしてバラムはバラクのつかさたちと一緒に行った（民数記２２章３４節ー３５節）。
モアブに着いたバラムはバラクと会い、結局、バラムはバラクから計三度、イスラエルをのろうことを求められますが、神の御心はその求めになく、バラムはバラクが望むこととは反対に、神が言われたとおりにイスラエルを祝福し、将来、モアブの上に落ちかかろうとする裁きを宣告しました。神は時にこのように異教の預言者を用い、その異教の預言者が大切な役目を全うしました。
・・・・しかしながら、何度もお話ししていますように人生はその時がすべてではありません。このバラクとバラムのやりとりがあり、バラムは神の御心だけを伝えることにより、預言者としての役割を神の前に正しく終えました。それが ２４章に書かれていることです。しかし、転じて２５章はこんな記録から始まります。
「イスラエルはシッテムにとどまっていたが、民はモアブの娘たちとみだらなことをし始めた。その娘達が神々に犠牲を捧げる時に民を招くと、民は一緒にそれを食べ、娘達の神々を拝んだ。イスラエルはこうしてペオルのバアルにつき従ったので、主はイスラエルにむかって怒りを発せられた」。
モアブの娘達はどのようにしてイスラエルの民を誘惑する方法を知ったのでしょう？どうやって彼らに背信を犯させて、自分達の神々に犠牲をささげ、偽りの神を拝ませることができたのでしょう？これは神のみこころをそこないました。神の怒りが燃え上がり、続いて起こった災害で二万四千人のイスラエルの民が命を失いました。実際には誰がイスラエルにこのような破滅をもたらすような計画を考え出したのでしょう？ヨハネの黙示録とペテロ第二の手紙はこの時のことについてこう書き記しています。
「バラムはバラクに教え込み、イスラエルの子らの前に、つまずきになるものを置かせて、偶像に捧げた物を食べさせ、また不品行を行わせたのである」（黙示録２章１４節）。
15彼らは正しい道からはずれて迷いに陥り、ベオルの子バラムの道に従った。バラムは不義の実を愛し、16そのために、自分のあやまちに対するとがめを受けた。（Ⅱペテロ２章１５節ー１６節）
正面から武力で立ち向かってくる外敵に対してイスラエルはそれを打ち負かす力を持っていました。しかし、その敵が彼らの内側に入り込むのなら、彼らはそれらに無残にも負けていきました。そう、イスラエルはモアブの女性による誘惑にあい、重大な偶像礼拝の罪を犯し、一日に２４０００人の死者を出す結果を招いたのです（民数記２５：９）。バラムは結局、モアブの王がさしだした不義の報酬に心がくらみ、神の民を滅ぼす計らいをモアブの王に告げてしまったのです。そして彼の最後は惨めなものとなりました。
『イスラエルの人々はまたペオルの子、占い師バラムをも剣にかけて、その他に殺した者たちと共に殺した』（ヨシュア１３章２２節）。
バラムはかつてこうバラクに言っていたのです「わたしは義人のように死に、私の終わりは彼らの終わりのようでありたい」（民数記２３章１０節）。しかし、義人のように生きないで、どうして義人のように死ぬことができましょうか。悲しいかな、彼はイスラエルに偶像礼拝とその裁きをもたらした張本人として、一時は預言者と呼ばれながら、最後には占い師と呼ばれてイスラエルの手によって死刑に処せられています。
今日のタイトルは「サインを見逃さない」ということです。神様は思いがけないロバを私達の前に置きます。そのロバに腹が立つことがあるかもしれない。なぜなら、そのロバは私達の行く手をふさいだり、その方向を変える邪魔者に見えるからです。しかし、そんな時、私達はバラムのようにムチを振り上げて怒るのではなく、そこに主の御心があるのではないかと静かに祈り考えてみませんか。そうすることにより、私達は命が救われるかもしれません。思ってもいない祝福を受けるかもしれません。お祈りしましょう。
Balaam: Do not miss the signs.
While Moses led the Israelites as they wandered through the wilderness in search of the promise land, there were other tribes living in the various places they came across. Some of these events are recorded of in the book of Numbers.
Then the Israelites traveled to the plains of Moab and camped along the Jordan across from Jericho.2 Now Balak son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites,3 and Moab was terrified because there were so many people. Indeed, Moab was filled with dread because of the Israelites. (Numbers 22:1-3)
When Moses and the Israelites stayed in the plains of Moab, the king of Moab, Balak, was deeply troubled by their presence in great numbers. So Balak sent his messengers to summon Balaam, a pagan prophet and told him “For I know that whoever you bless is blessed, and whoever you curse is cursed.” (Numbers 22:6) Yes, Balak asked Balaam to curse the Israelites for Moab (Today I will mention these two similar names, Balak and Balaam, so listen carefully. Balak is the king of Moab, and Balaam is the pagan prophet.
King Balak asked Balaam to curse the Israelites, and the prophet Balaam told the messengers,8 “Spend the night here and I will report back to you with the answer the Lord gives me.”
And God said to Balaam, “Do not go with them. You must not put a curse on those people, because they are blessed.”
The next morning, after Balaam told the messenger of God’s guidance. They returned to Balak and told him that, “Balaam did not come with them because God did not let him curse them”. Balak did not give up and sent more higher ranking messengers to Balaam. They said to him,16 “This is what Balak son of Zippor says: Do not let anything keep you from coming to me, 17 because I will reward you handsomely and do whatever you say. Come and put a curse on these people for me.” (Numbers 22:16-17). What did Balaam respond?
Balaam told Balak’s servants; 18 “Even if Balak gave me all the silver and gold in his palace, I could not do anything great or small to go beyond the command of the Lord my God. 19 Now spend the night here so that I can find out what else the Lord will tell me.” (Numbers 22:18-19)
Balaam seems to respect God, and he responded that he would ask the Lord again. His response seems very faithful, but in reality he was probably tempted by the gold, silver and rewards offered to him. God had already told Balaam when the servants first visited him to, “Not go with them”. So he should not have said a second time to “Wait until I ask God”.
God’s will was already clear to Balaam, but he had his own thoughts and desires, so he went on to ask God a second time. This is the same as when we pray of our wishes to God. Yes, we do pray for God’s will to be done, but when we find that His will is different from our own, we do not accept it and try to negotiate, ultimately doing what we ourselves want. That is the the kind of heart we have. Well then, let us read on to what became of Balaam.
20 That night God came to Balaam and said, “Since these men have come to summon you, go with them, but do only what I tell you.” 21 Balaam got up in the morning, saddled his donkey and went with the Moabite officials. 22 But God was very angry when he went, and the angel of the Lord stood in the road to oppose him. Balaam was riding on his donkey, and his two servants were with him. 23 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand, it turned off the road into a field. Balaam beat it to get it back on the road. 24 Then the angel of the Lord stood in a narrow path through the vineyards, with walls on both sides. 25 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, it pressed close to the wall, crushing Balaam’s foot against it. So he beat the donkey again. 26 Then the angel of the Lord moved on ahead and stood in a narrow place where there was no room to turn, either to the right or to the left.27 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, it lay down under Balaam, and he was angry and beat it with his staff.
We find this odd because God had said to Balaam that night, 20 “Since these men have come to summon you, go with them, but do only what I tell you.” Therefore, Balaam left his place but when he went with the servants, God was very angry. Why was this so?
God treats us humans as those of free will. He does not force us to obey Him. God wants our sincere obedience. Therefore, He gave Balaam freedom to choose his way, but Balaam used the freedom for his own desire.
God knows not only our words and deeds but He also knows our heart. Balaam most likely woke up early that morning and thought about the rewards promised to him from king Balak. Needless to say, God knew his heart.
As he rode his donkey on the way to Moab, the angel of the Lord stood in the road to oppose him, but Balaam could not see the angel. When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand, it turned off the road into a field. Balaam beat it to get it back on the road. Then the angel of the Lord stood in a narrow path through the vineyards, with walls on both sides. When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, it pressed close to the wall, crushing Balaam’s foot against it. So he beat the donkey again. Yes, the donkey tried to avoid the calamity before him, but the donkey was just an annoyance to Balaam. The donkey saved Balaam’s life and the donkey also saved Balaam from his sins. Balaam’s eyes were finally opened and when he finally saw the angel of the LORD standing in his way, he realized that he had almost lost his life.
Dear brothers and sisters, we also have this donkey in our life. We also have similar wishes and desires like that of Balaam. We talk about God’s will, but we do not follow His will and try to adjust His will to our own desires.
The donkey is like God’s sign to us when we proceed with our own selfish decisions. When God thinks we should reconsider, that it would be better for us to avoid a certain path, He provides us with this donkey. And so we should be careful of our words and deeds. Dear brothers and sisters, do you know what this donkey is in your life?
This donkey may be someone’s letter to you. This donkey may be the words of advice from someone. We might ignore these, but it is wise to keep it on our minds and ponder about them. If we still insist on following our desire, the sword might be waited before us. We should not ignore God’s signs.
After these things happened, 34 Balaam said to the angel of the Lord, “I have sinned. I did not realize you were standing in the road to oppose me. Now if you are displeased, I will go back.” 35 The angel of the Lord said to Balaam, “Go with the men, but speak only what I tell you.” So Balaam went with Balak’s officials (Numbers 22:34-35).
Balaam met with Balak at Moab, and Balaam was asked three times to curse the Israelites, but that was not God’s will, so Balaam blessed the Israelites and predicted the judgment of Moab. God used a pagan prophet for His will, and the prophet had a very important role in His story.
But as I always say, our life does not consist of a single moment or event. It seems that Balaam did his role as a prophet by following God’ will. This is written in Numbers 24, but chapter 25 begins with the following.
While Israel was staying in Shittim, the men began to indulge in sexual immorality with Moabite women, 2 who invited them to the sacrifices to their gods. The people ate the sacrificial meal and bowed down before these gods. 3 So Israel yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor. And the Lord’s anger burned against them (Numbers 25:1-3).
How did the Moabite women know how to tempt the Israelites? How could they sacrifice and worship their gods? Of course that was not God’s will, and His anger burned against the Israelites and twenty-four thousand of their lives were lost. Who thought of and formed this strategy that led the Israelites to such disaster? The book of Revelation and 2 Peter mentions this event as following.
14 Nevertheless, I have a few things against you: There are some among you who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin so that they ate food sacrificed to idols and committed sexual immorality (Revelation 2:14).
15 They have left the straightway and wandered off to follow the way of Balaam son of Bezer, who loved the wages of wickedness. 16 But he was rebuked for his wrongdoing by a donkey. (2 Peter 2:15-16）
The Israelites were capable of beating their enemies from the outside, but the enemy came and destroyed the Israelites from within. They were tempted by the Moabite women, and committed the sin of pagan worship, which lead to the death of twenty-four thousand men. Balaam was tempted by the reward Balak offered to him, and he enticed the Israelites. His death was also sad and miserable.
22 In addition to those slain in battle, the Israelites had put to the sword Balaam son of Beor, who practiced divination. (Joshua 13:22)
Balaam once said to Balak, “Let me die the death of the righteous, and may my final end be like theirs!” Balaam wished to die as a righteous man, but how can he die as a righteous man without living like a righteous one. He was once called a prophet but now he was called a fortune-teller and was killed by the Israelites.
Today’s message title is “Do not miss the sign”. God put a donkey before us. We might be annoyed and at times angry towards the donkey because the donkey will block our way and seem like an obstacle for us. But when we see the donkey, let us not get upset like Balaam, but think about God’s will. It may save our life, and we may receive God’s blessings. Let us pray.
