マラキ：旧約聖書全巻の結論と希望

聖書は旧約聖書３９巻、新約聖書２７巻、計６６巻からなりますが、今日はいよいよその旧約聖書の一番最後、３９番目の書、マラキ書を見ていきます。マラキ書はその名のごとくマラキという預言者が書いたもので、ここ二週間、続けてお話してきましたハガイやゼカリヤから５、６０年後に活躍した旧約聖書最後の預言者であり、このマラキ書を最後に、これ以降、新約聖書にいたるまで中間時代といわれる、預言者による啓示が全くなくなる暗黒の４００年をむかえます。
ハガイやゼカリヤは１６年もの間、放置されていたエルサレムの神殿の再建を民に語りかけ、民は心が動かされ彼らは４年余りの年月でその神殿を完成させます。覚えていらっしゃるでしょうか、その時、神様はこの民達がのろいから祝福へと変えられると約束されたのです。しかしながら、それから半世紀を経たマラキの時代に民の心から神様に対する真実な思いは失われ、ただ空虚な形だけの信仰が残り、特に本来、神に仕えるはずの祭司の不敬虔が強く責められました（１章６節‐２章９節）。神様の祝福も祭司や民たちの心がこのような状態では注がれることはありません。
マラキ書によれば、祭司たちは総督にさえ差し出さない、傷があり病気の動物を神様に捧げ（１章８節）、その奉仕は神様に対する不満の心でなされ（１章１３節）、神と共に歩み、人々を罪から立ち返らせる熱心、民を正しく教え導くことや律法の遵守は軽視され、祭司がこの有様ですから、イスラエルの民達の姿も目が当てらず、異教の女をめとるために自らの妻と離縁するなど神様への背信行為を繰り返していました。
「終りよければ全てよし」とは言いますが、この旧約聖書最後の書からうかがい知る人の有様というものはこれまで見てきました諸々の書と同じように決していいものではありませんでした。いいえ、かえって人の心がさらに頑なになっている様を私達はマラキ書の中に見ます。マラキは他の預言書にはあまり記されていないこのようなイスラエルの民達の姿を記録しています。
1マラキによってイスラエルに臨んだ主の言葉の託宣。2主は言われる、「わたしはあなたがたを愛した」と。ところがあなたがたは言う、「あなたはどんなふうに、われわれを愛されたか」。（マラキ１章１節‐２節）。
17あなたがたは言葉をもって主を煩わした。しかしあなたがたは言う、「われわれはどんなふうに、彼を煩わしたか」。 それはあなたがたが「すべて悪を行う者は主の目に良く見え、かつ彼に喜ばれる」と言い、また「さばきを行う神はどこにあるか」と言うからである（マラキ２章１７節）。
7あなたがたは、その先祖の日から、わが定めを離れて、これを守らなかった。わたしに帰れ、わたしはあなたがたに帰ろうと、万軍の主は言われる。ところが、あなたがたは『われわれはどうして帰ろうか』と尋ねる。8人は神の物を盗むことをするだろうか。しかしあなたがたは、わたしの物を盗んでいる。あなたがたはまた『どうしてわれわれは、あなたの物を盗んでいるのか』と言う（マラキ３章７節‐８節）。
ここには「天地創造、はじめの男と女、はじめの親子、はじめの家族、はじめの民族、はじめの王、はじめの国・・・」と私達がこれまで見てきました無数の人間が行き着いた姿が記されています。ここから分かることは、はじめの人間から人は年を重ねる度に高尚になってきたかというと決してそうではなく同じ過ちを何度も繰り返してきて、このマラキの時代になっても、何ら変わらないというのがこの旧約聖書の歴史であり、その最後の書にいたっては、神の語りかけに対して、反論している、ひらきなおっている人の姿がここにあるのです。
「ひらきなおり」というのは、悪事をしている人がたどりつく最後のところにあるものです。散々、悪いことをしていながら、その悪に慣れてしまい、それを知りながら「俺たちが何をしたというのだ、何か文句あるのか」という心です。マラキ書にこれまでの書以上のこのような「開き直り」が多く記されているというのは、ある意味、もう人間は行き着くところまで行ってしまったということでしょう。自分が犯した過ちというものを謙虚に受け入れ、悔い改めようという思いはそこに微塵もなく、そのことが指摘されれば開き直り、かえって非を神に向けるという民の姿です。
私達は今、旧約聖書の３９合目の山頂に立っているのですが、そこから振り返ってみたこれまでの人間の歩みは、まさしく敗北の歴史でありました。敗北とは国と国の戦いにおける敗北ではなく、自らの心を制し、悪に染まらず、神を崇めるということにおいて、彼らは連敗を続けており、それは人の側に弁解の余地がないということを証明する歩みであったということです。
しかしながら、山頂に行けば何か素晴らしいものがあるかもしれないと期待しつつ、登ってきたこの旧約聖書の山ですが、その山頂に立ってみれば、そこもやはりゴミが散乱しているような場所だったのです。なんということでしょうか、イスラエルの民は数千年間の間、何をしていたのでしょうか。
このマラキの時代から２４００年あまりがたちますが、その間の人の歩みというものもほとんど当時と何ら変わりません。科学技術は大きく進歩しました。それまで多くの人命を奪っていました諸々の病気から命を守る術を私達は見出しました。法の整備と治安の保持によって、私達の身に直接的な危険がおよぶことは昔よりも少ないでしょう。私達が知ることができる情報の多さは昔と比べものになりません。しかし、私達の心はどうでしょうか。私達の心が抱えている問題は、このマラキの時代と何ら変わらないのではないでしょうか。
覚えていますか。最初の人、アダムとイブ。禁断の実を食べてしまったこの夫アダムはその言い訳を「わたしと一緒にしてくださったあの女が木からとってくれたので」（創世記３章１２節）とその責任を神様と妻に転嫁しました。言うまでもなく、この後の夫婦の関係は問題を抱えたことでしょう。同じように私達が今日、生きている「この世界は自分以外のものが悪い、そのせいで俺はこうなったんだ」という人達で満ちています。
アダムとイブから生まれた二人の息子のうち兄は弟に対するねたみにより、弟を殺害しました。今日、私達の多くの苦しみや悩み、統計から言いましても殺人・盗み、これらのほとんどは身内の中で、骨肉の間で起きています。
人が増えていくに連れて彼らは自分達の名声と力が天に届くようにとバベルの塔を建てました。今日、私達はこのようなバベルの塔を世界中の都市、いたるところで見ることができます。
神様がノアに箱舟を造るようにと声をかけられた時、世は神の前に乱れて
、暴虐が地に満ちていました。それは古の記録ですが、２０１３年のこのサンディエゴはいかがでしょうか。
アブラハムは崇高な使命を神様から与えられて出て行きましたが、行く先々で自らの不信仰をあらわにしました。私達、信仰者と呼ばれる者達が日々、真実に自らの心に向かい合いますのなら、私達もアブラハムとは何ら変わらないのです。
アブラハムの孫である兄弟ヤコブとエサウの間には不和があり、ヤコブは逃げるようにして実家を飛び出しました。その大きな原因は父が兄エサウを愛し、母が弟ヤコブを愛したという偏愛にありました。今日も私達が抱えている問題の多くは親子の関係から発しています。親子の間に全く問題がありませんという人はいません。
ヤコブは偏愛されるということがどんなに子供の傷となるかと知りつつも、自らの１２ 人の息子のうち、ヨセフを偏愛しました。それゆえにヨセフは兄弟達のねたみを買い、エジプトに売られました。私達は自分が傷ついたのだから二度とこのようなことは繰り返すまいと思いつつも同じことを繰り返します。それが人の歴史です。
やがてイスラエルの民は自分達を結束させ、守り、繁栄をもたらしてくれる王をたてます。しかし、その王自身に問題があるとするならば、それは民の生活に降りかかってきます。国の指導者の欲心がイスラエルの民を苦しめました。このような国々を今日、数えようとするなら両手の指だけでは足りません。
彼らは何度も落ちていきます。何度もつまづきます。何度も神に反逆します。その度に神様は彼らに手を差し伸べ、彼らを救います。そのようなことを何千も繰り返します。そして、いきついた先が「ひらきなおり」だったのです。
私達の家庭や世の中の中に生きる私達の心に当時に比べて何か勝ったものがありますか。確かに社会福祉や医療、教育、治安を保つ体制というようなものが整えられました。しかし、私達の心はほとんど何も変わっていないのではないでしょうか。これらの体制は私達の生活を確かに守ってくれるものですが、もしこれらが取り払われたら、私達は何をしでかすか分からない当時と何ら変わることのない心をもっています。
いったいどれだけの人命が過去の戦争によって失われてきたことでしょう。まさしくそれは無数です。皆さんの中にもその砲火や空襲を通られた方達がいます。私達は知っているのです。どれだけそれが恐ろしいものであり、そのことによって何がもたらされるかを。そのようなことを次の世代に残してはいけない。それを知っているのに昔と変わらず、私達は今もきな臭い戦の噂を世界各地で聞くのです。
男と女が結ばれ夫婦となる。考えてみればとてもシンプルな営みです。しかし、このことについて抱える問題はアダムとイブの時代に比べて私達は勝っていますか。イサクとリベカの息子たちに対する親心に対して、私達は何か勝ったものをもっているでしょうか。アカンは取ってはならないものを盗みとりました、私達は彼よりも高い倫理を今日もっていますか。ダビデが水浴するバテシバを前にとった行動よりもはるかに勝った自制心を私達はもっていますか。
私達の側には私達の心に関して自ら手の打ちようがなく、行き着く先には開き直りがあるのです。今日、リベラリズムの風が吹き、人は「自分の勝手だ、俺たちの自由だ、口出しするな」と叫び、それが正当化されていますが、時にその声の中から「開き直りの大合唱」を聞くのは私だけでしょうか。
さて、それでは旧約聖書は「人間の最後は結局、ひらきなおりです。ピリオド」というようなな結論と共に閉じられていくのでしょうか。いいえ、マラキはその書の中に次につながる光を書き留めました。彼はこう預言しました。
『見よ、わたしはわが使者をつかわす。彼はわたしの前に道を備える。またあなたがたが求める所の主は、たちまちその宮に来る。見よ、あなたがたの喜ぶ契約の使者が来ると、万軍の主が言われる』（マラキ３章１節）。
『5見よ、主の大いなる恐るべき日が来る前に、わたしは預言者エリヤをあなたがたにつかわす。6彼は父の心をその子供たちに向けさせ、子供たちの心をその父に向けさせる。これはわたしが来て、のろいをもってこの国を撃つことのないようにするためである』（マラキ４章５節‐６節）。
マラキは神様ご自身の言葉を受け、「わが使者を遣わす。彼はわたしの前に道を備える」、「わたしは預言者エリヤをあなたがたにつかわす。彼は父の心をその子供達に向けさせ、子供達の心をその父に向けさせる」と書いています。私達がここから読むとることができることは、やがていつの日か神様はこの地に誰かを送るということです。ここに記されている「わが使者」「預言者エリヤ」とは誰のことなのでしょう。
マラキがこの預言を記した４００年の後、ザカリヤという祭司がいました。ある時、彼が聖所に入って、香を焚いていましたところ、御使いが現れて彼にこう言いました『13そこで御使が彼に言った、「恐れるな、ザカリヤよ、あなたの祈が聞きいれられたのだ。あなたの妻エリサベツは男の子を産むであろう。その子をヨハネと名づけなさい。14彼はあなたに喜びと楽しみとをもたらし、多くの人々もその誕生を喜ぶであろう。15彼は主のみまえに大いなる者となり、ぶどう酒や強い酒をいっさい飲まず、母の胎内にいる時からすでに聖霊に満たされており、16そして、イスラエルの多くの子らを、主なる彼らの神に立ち帰らせるであろう。17彼はエリヤの霊と力とをもって、みまえに先立って行き、父の心を子に向けさせ、逆らう者に義人の思いを持たせて、整えられた民を主に備えるであろう」（ルカ１章１３節‐１７節）。
ザカリヤの妻はエリサベツといい、彼女は子を宿すことができるような年ではありませんでした。しかし、この御使いの言葉どおりに彼女は子を生みました。その時に夫ザカリヤは聖霊に満たされてわが子に向かい、こう言いました「76幼な子よ、あなたは、いと高き者の預言者と呼ばれるであろう。主のみまえに先立って行き、その道を備え、77罪のゆるしによる救をその民に知らせるのであるから。78これはわたしたちの神のあわれみ深いみこころによる。また、そのあわれみによって、日の光が上からわたしたちに臨み、79暗黒と死の陰とに住む者を照し、わたしたちの足を平和の道へ導くであろう」（ルカ１章７６節‐７９節）。
このザカリヤとエリサベツの間に生まれた子はヨハネと名づけられ、今日、私達は彼をバプテスマのヨハネと呼んでいます。ヨハネは不思議な男でした。彼はユダヤの何もない荒野でらくだの毛ごろもを身にまとい、腰に皮の帯をしめ、いなごと野蜜とを食物として暮らしました（マルコ１章６節）。この姿はマラキよりも５００年も前に生きた、同じように毛ごろもを来て、腰に皮の帯をしめた（列王記下１章８節）預言者エリヤを彷彿とさせます。ヨハネも属していたであろうと言われていますエッセネ派の居住跡が今もイスラエル、死海の側にあります。そこからあの大量の死海写本が見つかりました。彼らは人里から離れ、常に身をきよめ、ひたすら羊皮紙に自分達の先祖が書き記した神の言葉を書き写して暮らしていたようです。
時に神様は時代の変わり目にヨハネのような稀有な人間をこの地に起こします。彼はエリヤのように歯に衣を着せず語り、人々に罪からの悔い改めを迫りました。『まむしの子らよ、迫ってきている神の怒りから、おまえたちはのがれられると、だれが教えたのか。8だから、悔改めにふさわしい実を結べ』（マタイ３章７節‐８節）。
この激しい言葉はヨハネが神様から自分に託されている役目をはっきりと知っていたということを証明しています。彼は鼻から息する人を恐れず、躊躇なく事実を語りました。「悔い改めよ！」。この火の粉が飛び散るような言葉に多くの人の心は捕らえられました。開き直りをしていた者達の心が揺さぶられました。そして、人々はぞくぞくと彼のもとに集まってきて、ヨルダン川でバプテスマを受けたのです。その勢いは遠く離れた都エルサレムにまで届くほどのもので、これを機に彼は自らを引き上げることができたでしょう。しかし、彼の心にはそのような思いは微塵もなく、彼はひたすら神が彼に与えた使命に行きました。
ある時、群衆は権威をもって語る彼に問いかけました「あなたは誰ですか」と。彼はその問いにこう答えました『主の道をまっすぐにせよと荒野で呼ばわる者の声である』（ヨハネ１章２３節）。
彼は自らがすべきことを理解し、その役目に徹して、群衆に諭すように語りました『29花嫁をもつ者は花婿である。花婿の友人は立って彼の声を聞き、その声を聞いて大いに喜ぶ。こうして、この喜びはわたしに満ち足りている。30彼は必ず栄え、わたしは衰える』（ヨハネ３章２９節、３０節）。
そして、言いました『16わたしは水でおまえたちにバプテスマを授けるが、わたしよりも力のあるかたが、おいでになる。わたしには、そのくつのひもを解く値うちもない」（ルカ３章１６節）。
これらの言葉はどれもヨハネが誰かを指差して語っています。彼は自分は荒野の声にすぎず、あるお方のために道を備える者に過ぎず、その方はこれから必ず栄えるけれど、自分はこれから衰え、やがて消えていく者であり、私は自分の後から来るその方のくつひもを解く値打ちもないと言ったのです。しかしながら、私はその方の声を聞き、大いに喜び、その喜びは私に満ち足りているというのです。
再び、先にも読みましたマラキ３章１節の預言の言葉に戻りましょう。「見よ、わたしはわが使者をつかわす。彼はわたしの前に道を備える。またあなたがたが求める所の主は、たちまちその宮に来る。見よ、あなたがたの喜ぶ契約の使者が来ると万軍の主が言われる』。この箇所を注意深く読みます時にここには二人の使者が書かれていることに気がつきます。英語の聖書で読みますともっと分かりやすいかもしれません。3 “I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his
temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom
you desire, will come,” says the Lord Almighty.
この文章の前半は今、お話しました神様がご自身の前に道を備えるメッセンジャー、すなわちバプテスマのヨハネを指しています。そして、その後半には別の使者、すなわち「古の昔から契約されていた使者」が来ると万軍の主は言われるというのです。
「古の昔から契約されていた使者」とは誰なのでしょう。古というのはどれほど昔のことなのでしょう。創世記３章１５節。そこには禁断の実をアダムとイブが食べてしまった後に神様が彼らを誘惑した蛇、すなわちサタンに向かって語られた言葉が記されています「わたしは恨みをおく。おまえと女との間に、おまえのすえと女のすえとの間に。彼はおまえのかしらを砕き、おまえは彼のかかとを砕くであろう」。古の契約は創世記にまでさかのぼるのです。その使者は一時、サタンによってそのかかとが砕かれる。しかし、それは致命的ではない。その彼はおまえにとって致命的となるそのかしらを砕くであろう。
この古の昔から契約されていた使者、それは言うまでもないヨハネ自身が私はその靴のひもを解く値打ちがない、私は衰えるが、彼は必ず栄えると指差したイエス・キリストなのです。その彼が指差したキリストがこの地に来る。彼は一時、十字架につけられます。それはサタンによる致命的な一撃に思われました。しかし、このキリストはその一撃に勝利をとられます。そして、やがて終りの時にキリストはこの諸々の悪の力なるサタンに完全な一撃を加え、勝利をとるというのです。この古の昔から契約されていた使者がくるということを預言しているのが旧約聖書最後の書、マラキ書が記す希望なのです。もはや全てが行き詰った。人はひらきなおることしか知らない、もはや自分達の内に何ら、自らを救いうるものはない。全ての試みは敗北に終わった。そのまま彼らは４００年の暗黒に突入します。聖書はその４００年に沈黙を保っていますが、４００年の後、人々はヨハネが指差したお方の一声をガリラヤで聞くことになります『時は満ちた、神の国は近づいた。悔い改めて福音を信ぜよ』（マルコ１章１５節）。
ここから新しい時代が始まります。そうです『心の貧しい人たちはさいわいである。天国は彼らのものである。悲しんでいる人たちはさいわいである。彼らは慰められるであろう』（マタイ５章３節、４節）という恵みの時代が始まるのです。
これから私達はこの扉を開き、その中で語られる希望の言葉に向き合っていきます。もし、今日お話しましたような人の真実な姿というものを自らの心の中に見出すという方がいましたら、その人はさいわいだとキリストは言われます。天国はあなたのものだ、あなたは慰められると言われます。これから見ていきます、このキリストのうちに私達は私達に約束されている希望を見出します。来週以降、お話していくことは、これまでのあなたの人生を根底から変えることになるかもしれません。今日で旧約聖書からの礼拝メッセージは終わります。私達が胸をなでおろすのは、マラキの時代のようにこれから４００年間の暗闇を歩む必要はないということです。すでに光は私達のもとにあり、その光は既に私達を照らしていてくださるのですから、私達はその光にさらに近寄ればいいのです。どうぞ期待して、来週以降も礼拝にお越しください。お祈りしましょう。

The Bible contains 66 books, 39 books are from the Old
Testament and 27 books are from the New Testament. Today we will read the 39th
book, the last book of the Old Testament.
The book of Malachi was written by Malachi, who was the last prophet who
lived 60 years after Haggai and Zachariah.
I talked about them the last two weeks.
Haggai and Zechariah encouraged people to rebuild the temple
which was neglected for 16 years. People were moved by the prophet’s vision and
the people returned to their mission of rebuilding God’s temple. When they
accomplished it, God gave them a wonderful blessing. God restored their peace and prosperity.
People who were previously cursed, once again became the source of blessings to
others.
A half century after Haggai and Zechariah is the time of
Malachi. The people lost true faith in
God, having only a superficial and empty belief. The lax religious and social behavior of
priests, who should serve God, was particularly bad. Priests should have served
God faithfully and help the people to repent for their sins and to lead the
people to God. Without the priests to lead them, the people were disloyal to
God. God’s blessing would not have been poured out upon people or the priests
who had no faith in God.
According to Malachi, priests offered unclean and diseased
animals for sacrifices to God. These would not even have been offered to their
governor. They offered the sacrifices to God with an unhappy and dissatisfied
attitude.
We usually say “ all is well that
ends well”.
Throughout the Old Testament people went through the period
where they were faithful to God then fell away from Him into sin and then God
would bring them back to Him again. If our saying “all is well that ends well”
is accurate then we would expect the last book of the old testament to show
God’s people being faithful to Him throughout the history.

the Lord. “But you ask, ‘How have you loved us?’ “Was not Esau Jacob’s brother?” declares the Lord. “Yet I have loved Jacob,

17 You have wearied the Lord with your words. “How have we wearied him?” you ask.
By saying, “All who do evil are
good in the eyes of the Lord, and he is pleased with them” or “Where is the God of justice?”

7 Ever since the time of your ancestors you have
turned away from my decrees and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will
return to you,” says the Lord Almighty.
“But you ask, ‘How are we to
return?’ “Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me.
“But you ask, ‘How do we rob you?’
“In tithes and offerings.
Since creation we have seen the same
situation repeated over and over. Since the first man and woman, the first
family, the first brothers, the first tribe, the first king, and the first
nation until now we see the same mistakes repeated over and over. This is the
history of the Old Testament and nothing has changed since then. As in the Malachi we see the people making
the same mistakes and even talking back to God as in verse 7 and 8.
As
people pull away from God, they eventually become worse and worse. They are
disrespectful and in the worst case they talk back to God. They don’t accept
their mistakes nor repent for them.
We
think that we should be climbing the hill throughout the Old Testament and you
reach the top of that hill, the book of Malachi. We would expect that when you
reach the top, you will have clear over view of the Old Testament. Instead, we
continue to see a pile of trash.
What progress have
people made since Creation? What have Israelite been doing for those years!
Since Malachi’s time it has been 2400 years. Since that time
human beings have not changed. Of course, science and technology created huge
advancements. Medical advancements have
saved lives and law had offered us legal protection. Our sources of information
cannot be compared to previous years.
But, how about us? Have we changed? We still react to the situation the same way
as people in the Old Testament.

Do you remember the story of Adam and Eve? Adam ate the forbidden fruit and blamed it on
Eve and Eve blamed it on the snake. Modern days we say everybody else is at
fault, not me.
Cane and Abel were brothers and Cane was jealous and killed
Abel. In current time, statistics show that the highest frequency of murder and
robbery occurs among the family.
As the population increased the people built the tower of
Babel in order to show off their name and power. Modern times we can see many towers of Babel
all over the world.
During Nohr‘s time the people were so evil that God wanted
to eliminate all of them and start over. In 2013 how do you see our world? We are seeing a similar corrupt world.
Abraham was chosen by God but he also made many human
mistakes. Even though we are Christians, children of God, we continue to make
human mistakes like Abraham.
The grandchildren of Abraham, Esau and Jacob even had
conflicts. Isaac loved Esau and Rebekah
loved Jacob. Many of our current problems stem from the relationship between
parents and children.
Out of Jacob’s 12 children he loved Josef the best. That is
why his other brothers were jealous of him and sold him as a slave. Jacob
repeated the same mistake that his parents made.
Then Israel became a strong nation and had many kings. But
those kings all had human failings. The king’s human failings would move the
people further from God and people no longer follow God’s ways. Instead they
followed the human power of the king.
Nowadays we have many countries that follow the king’s human power.

Are we any better or different than the Israelite under the
king’s rule? Nowadays we have better social welfare, medical care, education
and law and order but human nature has not changed. If we don’t have these
social benefits we would be very similar to the Israelite during the rule of
the kings.
How many lives have been lost in the past because of war?
Many of you may have experienced war, cannon fire or air attack. You know how
terrifying this experience is. The next generation should have learned the
generation before how horrible war is and should not duplicate our mistakes.
But there are still many wars in today’s world.
The act of marriage is a simple event. But married couples
encounter numerous problems. This has been true since the time of Adam and Eve.
The reaction of Isaac and Rebecca toward their sons might be similar to our
generation’s feeling toward our children. Achan violated the ban on stealing.
Are today people different than Achan? David didn’t have self-control when he
saw Bathsheba bathing. Do we have better control today than David did?
So, are we still people who do wrong and say “so what?”
Nowadays liberalism is very popular. People say it’s my freedom of choice, and
don’t bother me.” Society justifies this attitude. These attitudes were the
same that were present in David’s time.
The Old Testament ends with the book of Malachi. In Malachi
we find that people still had human failings. Is this a conclusion of the Old
Testament?
Malachi mentions that there is hope or light that messengers
will come to lead us. He prophesized as follows:
Malachi 3-1
“I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then
suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the
covenant, whom you desire, will come,” says the Lord Almighty.
Malachi 4-5,6
“See, I will send the prophet Elijah to you before that great and
dreadful day of the Lord comes. 6 He
will turn the hearts of the parents to their children, and the hearts of the
children to their parents; or else I will come and strike the land with total
destruction.”

Malachi received God words and said that “I will send my
messenger” “He will prepare the way
before me” “I will send the prophet Elijah” “He will turn the hearts of the
parents to their children” What
we understand from this is that God will send messengers to lead us. Who was
God going to send? God previously had sent Elijah and who will He send next?
Malachi prophesized the coming of a messenger from God, and
400 years later, John the Baptist appear in the Bible.
The priest Zachariah burned incense in the temple, and an
angel appeared and spoke to him;
(Luke 1-13,14)
13 But the angel said to him: “Do
not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will
bear you a son, and you are to call him John. 14 He
will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth,
15 for he will be great in the sight of the
Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled
with the Holy Spirit even before he is born. 16 He
will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. 17 And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit
and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and
the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared
for the Lord.”
The Zechariah’s wife Elizabeth was too old to bear a child.
But she gave birth as the angel had predicted. Zachariah, filled with the Holy
Spirit told this child….
(Luke 1-76-79)
And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High;
for
you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him,
77 to give his people the knowledge of
salvation
through
the forgiveness of their sins,
78 because of the tender mercy of our God,
by
which the rising sun will come to us from heaven
79 to shine on those living in darkness
and
in the shadow of death,
to guide our feet into the path of peace.”
John the baptism was an unusual man. He wore clothing made
of camels hair with a leather belt around his waist. He ate locusts with wild
honey. This reminds us of Elijah who lived 500 years before. He too wore a
garment of hair with a leather belt around his waist.
The Dead Sea scrolls were found in the region where the
Senesce sect of people lived. It is believed that John belonged to this sect of
people. These people lived far away from cities and other people and led very
simple a austere and pious life.

God sent us John who spoke clearly and boldly to the people.
John urged the people to repent.
(Mathew 3-7,8)
But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where
he was baptizing, he said to them: “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee
from the coming wrath? 8 Produce fruit in keeping with
repentance.
These harsh words proved that John understood the role that God wanted him to
play. He told everyone to repent. His words captured the hearts of many people.
Many people went out to John the Baptism
from Jerusalem and whole region of Jordan.
They were baptized by him in the Jordan River. John didn’t want to gain their favor, respect
and praise. He was a true man of God.
One day the crowd asked John “who are you?” He answered that
(John 3-29,30)I
am a voice of one calling in the desert.
John knew what he was to do and preached to the crowds”
9 The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the
bridegroom waits and listens for him,
(John 3-29,30) and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is
mine, and it is now complete. 30 He must become greater; I must
become less.”
(Luke3-16) answered them all, “I baptize you with[b] water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of
whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with[c] the Holy Spirit and fire.
These words point to someone greater than he was. John said
that he was only a voice calling in preparation for someone greater than him to
come. John said that He will become greater but I will become less. I am not
worthy to untie his sandals. But I hear
his voice and the joy is mine.
Let’s go back to the book of Malachi chap 3-1

I will send my messenger, who
will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will
come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come,”
says the Lord Almighty.
This verse tells us there will be two messengers
coming. The first messenger prepares a
way before the Lord comes. This messenger is John the Baptist. The second is
the messenger of the covenant.
Who is this messenger of the covenant? Genesis 3-15 tells
about Adam and Eve and the snake.
(Genesis 3-15)
And I will put enmity between you and the woman,
and between your offspring[a] and hers; he will crush[b] your head,
and you will strike his heel.”
This covenant he speaks of goes all the way back to Genesis.
The messenger’s heel will be broken by Satan but it is not a fatal blow. The Satan’s head will be struck a fatal blow
by Him.
This messenger of the covenant is Jesus Christ, whom John
the Baptist told that he is not worthy to untie his sandals. Jesus Christ will
come to his world. He was crussified.
This seems to be the fatal blow by Satan. But Jesus Christ raised himself
from death.
At the last stage Jesus Christ will break totally Satan’s
head and will achieve the victory. This is the hope of the book of Malachi
which is the last book of the Old Testament.
At the time of Malachi, everything was deadlock and people
were sluggish and no one among people could save them. All the trial
failed. So they had lived in the darkness
for 400 years. The Bible did not tell them anything during this time.
But people heard the first voice of covenant and it says
“The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news” (Mark
1-15)
We will open the new door and will seek the hope in it. If
one who can find people’s real image in himself talked today in himself, he
would be blessed. Jesus said blessed are the poor in
spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of
heaven.
We will find the hope of the covenant in
Jesus Christ. The story I will tell you from next week would change your life
completely. We finish the messages from
the Old Testament today. We are blessed is the fact that we don’t need to go
through in the darkness another 400 years. The
light is now with us and it shines light on us.
We just need to be close to the light. Please come join our service and looking
