聖書、創世記を見ます時に、ヨセフに起きた大きな三つの出来事が記されています。
１）ヨセフは兄弟達の妬みを買い、エジプトに奴隷として売られていきます。２）売られた先で、奴隷として仕えていた主人の妻から、してもいないことをしたと非難され、獄に入れられます。３）獄において、彼に対して恩義を感じるべき人から全く忘れられるという経験をし、獄から出ることができなくなります。
兄弟達の妬み、主人の妻からの仕打ち、命を救った者から忘れ去られること。これらの出来事に共通していることが何だかお分かりでしょうか。これら全てはヨセフ以外の人間によって、ヨセフの身にふりかかったということです。ですからヨセフに起きたことは、こう言い換えることができます。彼は自分の人生なのに、自らその主導権を握ることができずに、自分以外の者達によって、人生が思いがけない方向へと導かれたということです。
私達には自分ではどうすることもできないことが数多くあります。そして、その中に「私達が人にどう思われているか」ということがあります。このことは私達の側に主導権はありません。ヨセフはこのことによって大変な人生を送ることになりました。すなわち兄達が、主人の妻が、命を救った者が、自分をどう思っており、その彼らの思いが言動となってヨセフの人生を変えたということです。そして、このことは私達も例外ではありません。あなたは自分では変えられないことに直面した時、どうしていますか？

ヨセフ：「変えられないこと」に対する向き合い方

時々、教会に向かうべく家を出て、いつものようにフリーウェイに乗ろうという時に、その入り口が閉鎖されていることがあります。仕方なく遠回りをして、教会に向かうので、いつもより時間がかかります。何年も同じ道を使っていますので、何分で教会に着くのかということを私は知っています。その時間を計算して予定をたてますが、このようなことが起こりますと、当初の計画はずれていきます。
これは日常の些細なことですが、私達の人生にもこのようなことが起こります。突然の病気や事故、災いというものの多くを私達はその予定の中に入れてはいません。しかし、しばしばそれらは起こります。
「人生を舞台」としますと「ドラマの舞台」と「人生の舞台」の違いは何でしょうか。ドラマの舞台には脚本があり、その始まりと終わり、その間に何が起こるかということは予め決められています。しかし、人生という舞台に確実な脚本はなく、私達の明日はいつも白紙です。
今日はヨセフという人の生涯を見ていきたく願っています。ヨセフはヤコブの子として生まれますが、彼の人生は想定外な方向に向かいます。彼が直面した想定外の出来事は、彼が震災に遭うとか不治の病にかかったということではありませんでした。聖書、創世記を見ます時に、彼に起きた大きな三つの出来事が記されています。
１）ヨセフは兄弟達の妬みを買い、エジプトに奴隷として売られていきます。２）売られた先で、奴隷として仕えていた主人の妻から、してもいないことをしたと非難され、獄に入れられます。３）獄において、彼に対して恩義を感じるべき人から全く忘れられるという経験をし、獄から出ることができなくなります。
兄弟達の妬み、主人の妻からの仕打ち、感謝されるべき者に忘れ去られること。これらの出来事に共通していることが何だかお分かりでしょうか。これら全てはヨセフ以外の人間によって、ヨセフの身にふりかかったということです。
ですからヨセフに起きたことは、こう言い換えることができます。彼は自分の人生なのに、自らその主導権を握ることができずに、自分以外の者達によって、人生が思いがけない方向へと導かれたということです。私達には自分ではどうすることもできないことが数多くあります。
病気になる。どんなに注意していても、このことは避けられません。老いる。時の流れが逆戻りすることはありません。死ぬ。このことは１００％、私達にやってきます。
これらに加えて、事故や災害に見舞われることもあり、これらは私達にはどうすることもできないことです。このようなことが私達の人生にはたくさんあります。そして、その中に「私達が人にどう思われているか」ということがあります。このことも私達の側に主導権はありません。ヨセフはこのことによって大変な人生を送ることになったのです。
すなわちヨセフの兄達が、ヨセフの主人の妻が、ヨセフが命を救った者が、自分をどう思っており、その彼らの思いが言動となってヨセフの人生を変えたということです。そして、このことは私達も例外ではありません。
現代、私達はストレスの多い社会に暮らしていますが、そのストレスの第一要因は人間関係の問題です。そして、その人間関係が悩ましいものとなる原因は、誰も自分以外の人の心を自由に操作することができないからです。セキュリティーが厳しい場所に侵入できる泥棒はいるでしょう。しかし、どんな人間も相手の心の中に侵入して、彼らの思いを変えることはできないのです。
皆さん、このことは当たり前のことなのですが、私達はその当たり前のことに対して、それをどうにかしようとします。しかし、言うまでもなく、それはとても難しく、不可能なことが多く、私達は途方に暮れます。そのことが私達の心身を蝕んでしまうことがあります。
私は時々、海釣りに行きます。大漁の日もあれば、そうじゃない日もあります。釣り場に行くと仕掛けを準備して、餌をつけて糸を海に垂れます。あとはじっくりと当たりを待つのです。
海は常に潮の流れが変わります。風の向きが変わります。波の大きさも異なります。それによって釣果も大きく変わります。しかし残念なことに、私は自分の力でそれらを変えることができません。
私は桟橋で潮や風や波の動きをどうにかして変えようとしている人に、出会ったことはありません。それは無理なことであり、愚かな試みだということを私達は知っているからです。そんな私がかろうじて手を加えることができることがあるのなら、釣り場所や時間帯、そして仕掛けと餌を変えることぐらいです。
私達の悩みと苛立ちは、その変えられないものを変えようとする時に起こります。そしてさらに、それらは大抵、徒労に終わります。ヨセフの人生も自分ではどうすることもできないところで動いていました。
自分のいたらなさ、過ちなら、反省してやり直すことができます。その主導権は私達がもっているからです。しかし、他者が私達に対してもつ思い、そこから発せられる言動を食い止めることは、私達にはできません。このような不遇を嘆かない人がいるでしょうか。
ここでヨセフに関して、驚くべき事実を聖書の中に見出します。モーセにしても、ダビデにしても、エレミヤにしても、聖書は彼らが直面したこの類の不遇に対する彼らの嘆きを記録しています。しかし、この嘆きや不満がヨセフには見当たらないのです。聖書にそのような記録は一節もないのです。
これは同じ人間として、信じられないことです。なぜヨセフは諸々の試練を受け止めて、その中に生きることができたのでしょうか。彼はあるものを持っていました。何だったと思いますか。それは彼の神に対する「信仰」です。言い方を変えますならば「信頼」とも言うことができましょう。箴言３章５節から８節には、そんなヨセフの生涯を描写するような言葉が記されています。
箴言３章５節－８節
5 心をつくして主に信頼せよ、自分の知識にたよってはならない。6 すべての道で主を認めよ、そうすれば、主はあなたの道をまっすぐにされる。7 自分を見て賢いと思ってはならない、主を恐れて、悪を離れよ。8 そうすれば、あなたの身を健やかにし、あなたの骨に元気を与える。
ヨセフがもし主に信頼せずに、自分の知識（理解）に頼っていたとするならば、次から次へとやってくる不遇に打ちのめされてしまったことでしょう。ソロモンが指摘しているとおりです。
伝道の書１章１８節
『それは知恵が多ければ悩みが多く、知識を増す者は憂いを増すからである』
そこに主がはたらいておられるということを信じていなかったとするならば、ヨセフは自分の力でその問題を何とかしようとしたことでしょう。しかし、ヨセフは自分の知識（理解）に頼ることなく、心をつくして主に信頼しました。
もう一度、確認しましょう。ヨセフの問題は「自分の部屋の整理整頓」ではありませんでした。「自分のライフスタイルを見つめなおす」というようなことでもありませんでした。彼が向き合っていた問題は「自分以外の人間の心の中にあるもの」だったのです。ですから、仮に彼がそれを何とかしようとしても、彼は無力感と徒労感に打ちのめされるだけだったのです。箴言に書かれているように彼の身は損なわれ、骨の元気、すなわちその心の健やかさも奪われてしまったことでしょう。
ヨセフは知っていたのでしょう。自分は全てを把握し、問題を解決できるような者ではない。それではその時に彼ができることは何でしょうか。心を尽くして主に信頼すること。自分の知識に頼らず、全ての道で主を認めること。そして、ひたすら主を恐れて、悪を離れること。このことを毎日、続けること。
彼の手が鎖で繋がれ、獄に入れられていたとしても、彼はこれらのことをすることができたのです。このことをする主導権は彼が握っていたからです。彼は今日、そして明日と、そのことをコツコツと続けることができたのです。そして、このヨセフのために神様は彼の道を真っ直ぐにしてくださったのです。
既に亡くなりましたが、ドイツの神学者にラインホールド・ニーバー（1892-1971）という方がいます。彼は「冷静を求める祈り」という祈りを後世に残し、その祈りは今日も私達の間で親しまれています。
「神よ、変えられないもを受け入れる心の冷静さを与えたまえ。変えるべきものを変える勇気を与えたまえ。そして、変えられないものと変えるべきものを識別する知恵を与えたまえ」
ニーバーがここで「心の冷静」という言葉を使っていることはとても意味深いことです。彼の生涯にも色々なことがあったと思います。その中には私達も今日、体験するような、自分ではどうすることもできないことも多くあったことでしょう。
彼はそれらに向き合うことによって、紆余曲折しながらも、変えられないものに直面しても、心の冷静を保てるようにと祈ることを学んだのでしょうそして、同時に彼は「変えられないもの」と「変えるべきもの」とを識別する知恵を神様に求めました。
「変えるべきもの」に対しては、それを変えようとする勇気を与えてくださいと彼は神に祈ったのです。そして「変えられないもの」に対しては、それを受け入れる冷静さをくださいと神に祈ったのです。なぜ、その時、冷静さが必要なのか冷静に全ての上におられ、全てを支配しておられる主がおられることを自覚し、その主に対する信頼を取り戻すためです。
このニーバーの祈りがどのような状況から導かれたのか私達には分かりません。確かなことは、この祈りはヨセフの生き方に習うような祈りであったということです。そうです、それは変えられないものと変えるべきものとを識別し、変えられないものに対しては全く神に信頼したヨセフの生き方です。
確かにヨセフも人の子ですから、その時々に心の中に複雑な思いや怒りというものも浮かんできたことでしょう。しかし、その時々に彼は神様の前にその信頼と共に心の冷静を保ったのです。そして、そんなヨセフの信頼に対して神様は目には見えませんが、彼と共におり、その状況の中においても彼を見守り、祝福を注ぎ続けてくださったのです。ヨセフが奴隷として売られた先、エジプトにおける彼の生活というものを創世記３９章２節‐３節はこう記しています。
創世記３９章２節－３節
２主がヨセフと共におられたので、彼は幸運な者となり、その主人エジプトびとの家におった。３その主人は主が彼とともにおられることと、主が彼の手のすることをすべて栄えさせられるのを見た。４そこで、ヨセフは彼の前に恵みを得、そのそば近く仕えた。彼はヨセフに家をつかさどらせ、持ち物をみな彼の手にゆだねた。５彼がヨセフに家とすべての持ち物をつかさどらせた時から、主はヨセフのゆえにそのエジプトびとの家を恵まれたので、主の恵みは彼の家と畑とにあるすべての持ち物に及んだ。６そこで彼は持ち物をみなヨセフの手にゆだねて、自分が食べる物のほかは、何をも顧みなかった。
また彼がその主人の家から獄に移された時も獄屋において主はヨセフと共にありました。
創世記３９章２１節－２３節
２１主はヨセフと共におられて彼にいつくしみを垂れ、獄屋番の恵みをうけさせられた。２２獄屋番は獄屋におるすべての囚人をヨセフの手にゆだねたので、彼はそこでするすべての事をおこなった。２３獄屋番は彼の手にゆだねた事はいっさい顧みなかった。主がヨセフと共におられたからである。主は彼のなす事を栄えさせられた。
主にある皆さん、これらのことから分かることがあります。それは、私達が本当に神様に祈り、願い求めることは「彼、彼女の心を変えてください」ということよりも、「主よ、いついかなる時も私と共にいてください」ということなのだということです。その後、不思議な方法によって獄から出されたヨセフは異教の大国エジプトの王、パロからこんな評価を受けました。
創世記４１章３８節－４１節
３８そこでパロは家来たちに言った、「われわれは神の霊をもつこのような人を、ほかに見いだし得ようか」。３９またパロはヨセフに言った、「神がこれを皆あなたに示された。あなたのようにさとく賢い者はない。４０あなたはわたしの家を治めてください。わたしの民はみなあなたの言葉に従うでしょう。わたしはただ王の位でだけあなたにまさる」。４１パロは更にヨセフに言った、「わたしはあなたをエジプト全国のつかさとする」。
当時の大国、エジプトに売られてきたヨセフをして、異教徒パロは「神の霊をもつこのような人」と言ったのです。エジプトの最高権威者が奴隷として売られてきたヨセフに言ったのです。「あなたはわたしの家を治めてください」。パロはヨセフの内に、主を恐れて、悪を離れて生きてきた生き様を見たに違いありません。
「あなたのようにさとく賢い者はない」というヨセフに対するパロの評価はどこから生まれたのでしょうか。それはヨセフが神に全く信頼し「変えられないもの」と「変えるべきもの」を冷静に見極めてきた彼の人生の証から生まれてきたのでしょう。
そして、このヨセフの人生の圧巻は、ヨセフにはコントロールできなかった一連の試練が、この後、神様によって一つところに導かれていったということです。彼は奴隷として売られてきた身でありながら、最終的にエジプトの宰相、エジプトのナンバー２へとパロによって引き上げられました。このことにより大変な飢饉に見舞われ、生命が脅かされる状況にいた故郷の父ヤコブと、かつて自分を売った兄弟達とをエジプトへと呼び寄せ、彼らの命を救うことになったのです。そして、エジプトの宰相となったヨセフは、エジプトに呼び寄せた兄達を前に彼らに復讐をすることなく、こう語りかけるのです。
創世記４５章７節－８節
７神は、あなたがたのすえを地に残すため、また大いなる救をもってあなたがたの命を助けるために、わたしをあなたがたよりさきにつかわされたのです。８それゆえわたしをここにつかわしたのはあなたがたではなく、神です。神はわたしをパロの父とし、その全家の主とし、またエジプト全国のつかさとされました。
ヨセフの人生には一度ならず、二度も三度も理解できないこと、願わないことが続きました。しかし、彼はそれらを主に委ね歩み続け、それらの全てを経た後、自分の人生に降りかかった最悪と思われる諸々の出来事の意味がその時に分かったのです。私は兄達の妬みにより、流れ流れてこんな所にまで来てしまった・・・と私は思っていた。しかし、そうではない。私の神がこの時のために、私をここに遣わされたのだ！
主にある皆さん、私達は色々なところを通って、今に至っています。もしかしたら「何でこんなことになってしまったのだろう」と思っている方がいるかもしれません。ヨセフのように「何でこんなことに来てしまったのだろう」と考えている方がいるかもしれません。しかし、どうぞ覚えてください。私達はまだその過程（プロセス）の中にいるのです。私達はまだ物語の結末を見ていないのです。ですけ早々に結論を出すのはやめましょう。
主にある皆さん、もし、私達の晩年にヨセフと同じ言葉を言い残すことができたら、私達は何とさいわいなことでしょう。
「わたしをここにつかわしたのはあなたがたではなく、神です」
私の人生には色々なことがあった。しかし、主よ、あなたは今、私の目に明らかにしてくださいました。あなたがここに私をお遣わしくださったのですね。これは自分の人生を神の前に認め、私達と共にいてくださった神に感謝することです。私達の人生を、神への感謝と共に終えることができる、私はそんな人生を送りたいと切に思うのですが、皆さんはいかがですか。私達はその日が来ることを信じ、今日も明日も生きていくのです。イザヤ書のあの言葉を毎朝、心に唱えましょう。
イザヤ５５章８節－９節
8 わが思いは、あなたがたの思いとは異なり、わが道は、あなたがたの道とは異なっていると主は言われる。9 天が地よりも高いように、わが道は、あなたがたの道よりも高く、わが思いは、あなたがたの思いよりも高い。
主にある皆さん、私達がクリスチャンになるということはイコール、信仰者となることです。信仰者とは「変えられるものと変えられないもの」とを見極め、自分の力の及ばないところは神様を信頼して、それを委ねる者達のことをいいます。自分の理解によって全てを知ろうとはせずに、神の思いと道は自分の思いと道とは異なり、それらは遥かに自分のそれよりも高いということを信じることです。「信仰」という字が示すごとく、私達は心に信じて、顔をあげて、真実な神を仰ぐのです。新しい週が始まりました。私たちの前途には何があるでしょうか。
私たちは今、何に囲まれているでしょうか。それはあなたが変えることができるものですか。変えることができるようなものでしたら、主よ、私に勇気をお与えくださいと一歩、前に進み出ましょう。変えることができないものなら、私達に代わって、そのことを御手に治めていてくださる主に信頼しましょう。
日々、主を恐れて、悪を離れて生きていきましょう。このことに集中しましょう。主にある皆さん、神を信じ、顔をあげて、ここから出ていこうではありませんか。お祈りしましょう
Joseph: Dealing With the Unchangeable

Sometimes, when I leave my house to go to church and I am about to get on the freeway as usual, the entrance to the freeway is closed. I have no choice but to go out of the way and head for the church, which takes longer than usual. I know how many minutes it takes me to get to the church because I have used the same road for years. I calculate that time and plan my schedule, but when this kind of thing happens, I have to deviate from the original plan.
This is a trivial, everyday detail, but this is what happens in our lives. We don’t put many of the sudden illnesses, accidents, and calamities in our schedules. However, they often do occur.
。If we say that “life is a stage,” what is the difference between “the stage of a drama” and “the stage of life?” A drama has a script, and its beginning, end, and what happens in between are predetermined. However, there is no sure script to the stage of life, and our tomorrow is always a blank page.
Today, I would like to look at the life of Joseph. Joseph is born as Jacob’s son, but his life takes an unexpected turn. The unexpected events he faced were not that he suffered from an earthquake or had an incurable disease. When you look at the Bible, the Book of Genesis, there are three major events that happened to him that are recorded.
1) Joseph is sold as a slave to Egypt, because of his brothers’ envy toward him. 2) At the place he was sold, the wife of his master, whom he served as a slave, accuses him of doing something he did not do, and he is thrown into prison. 3) In prison, he experiences being totally forgotten by a person who should have felt indebted to him, and he will not be able to get out of prison.
The envy of the brothers, the treatment from the master’s wife, being forgotten by those who should be grateful. Do you know what these events have in common? All of this was done to Joseph by someone other than Joseph.
So what happened to Joseph can be put this way. He was unable to take charge of his own life, and his life was led in unexpected directions by people other than himself. There are many things we have no control over.
Sickness. No matter how careful we are, this is inevitable. Aging. Time does not reverse itself. Dying. This is coming to us, 100%. In addition to these, we may suffer accidents and disasters, and these are things we have no control over. There are many such things in our lives. And one of them is “how we are perceived by others”. This too is not something we have control over. Joseph had a difficult life because of this.
In other words, how Joseph’s brothers, Joseph’s master’s wife, and the one whose life Joseph saved thought about him, and how those thoughts became words and actions, changed Joseph’s life. And we are no exception to this.
Today, we live in a stressful society, and the primary cause of that stress is human relationship problems. And the reason why human relationships are so troubling is because no one is free to manipulate the minds of anyone but themselves. There will be thieves who can break into places with tight security. But no human being can invade another person’s heart and change their mind.
Dear people, this is something we all know, but we still try to do something about it. But needless to say, it is very difficult and often impossible, and we are at a loss. This can take a toll on our body and mind.
I sometimes go ocean fishing. Some days I have great catches, some days not so much. When you get to the place to fish, you prepare the rods, put on the bait, and drop the line into the sea.Now you have to take your time and wait for the hit.
The ocean tides are constantly changing. The direction of the wind changes. The size of the waves also varies. The fishing results will vary greatly depending on it. But alas, I cannot change them by my own strength.
I have never met anyone on the pier who is trying to somehow change the movement of the tide, wind, or waves. We know that it is impossible and a foolish attempt. The only thing I can do is to change the fishing location, time of day, rod, and bait.
Our worries and frustrations arise when we try to change that which cannot be changed. And furthermore, they are usually futile. Joseph’s life was also moving in a way that he had no control over.
If it is your own fault or mistake, you can reflect on it and start over. Because we have the initiative to do so. However, we cannot stop the thoughts that others have about us, or the words and actions that emanate from them. Who would not be saddened by such a disadvantage?
Here we find a remarkable fact about Joseph in the Bible. Whether it was Moses, David, or Jeremiah, the Bible records their lamentations over this kind of unfavorable situation they faced. But this lamentation and frustration is not found in Joseph. There is not a single verse in the Bible that records such a thing.
This is unbelievable, as a same human being. Why was Joseph able to accept the various trials and live through them? He had one thing. What do you think it was? It is his “faith” in God. In other words, it can be called “trust”. Proverbs 3:5-8 contains words that describe the life of Joseph.
Proverbs 3:5-8
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight. 7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. 8 This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.
If Joseph had relied on his own knowledge (understanding) instead of trusting in the Lord, he would have been overwhelmed by one disappointment after another. It is as Solomon points out.
Ecclesiastes 1:18
For with much wisdom comes much sorrow; the more knowledge, the more grief.
If he did not believe that the Lord was working there, Joseph would have tried to handle the problem on his own. However, Joseph did not rely on his own knowledge (understanding), but trusted in the Lord with all his heart.
Let’s go over this once again. Joseph’s problem was not “tidying up his own room”. It also wasn’t a “let’s rethink my lifestyle” kind of thing. The problem he was facing was “what was in the hearts of people other than himself”. So even if he had tried to do something about it, he would have been overcome with a sense of helplessness and frustration. As written in Proverbs, his body would have been weakened, and the vigor of his bones, that is, the health of his mind, would have been taken away.
Joseph must have known. I am not the kind of person who can figure out everything and solve problems. What then could he do at that time? Trust in the Lord with all his heart. Not relying on his own knowledge, but acknowledging the Lord in all his ways. And to solemnly fear the Lord and shun evil. Continue to do this every day.
He could have done these things even if his hands had been chained and he had been put in prison. Because he had the initiative to do this. He could continue to do that today and tomorrow, and he could continue to do that diligently. And for this Joseph, God made his path straight.
Although already deceased, there is a German theologian named Reinhold Niebuhr (1892-1971). He left behind a prayer called “Serenity Prayer,” that is still familiar to us today.
“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.”
Niebuhr’s use of the term “serenity” here is very significant. I think a lot has happened in his life. Many of them must have been beyond his control, just as we are experiencing today.
By dealing with those things, he must have learned to pray for serenity in the face of twists and turns and things he could not change. At the same time, he asked God for wisdom to discern between “things that cannot be changed” and “things that must be changed”.
For “things that must be changed,” he prayed to God for courage to change them. And for the “things that cannot be changed,” he prayed to God to give him the serenity to accept them.。Why is it necessary to have serenity in those times? The purpose is to calmly realize that there is a Lord who is above all, who is in control of everything, and to regain trust in that Lord.
We do not know what circumstances led to this Niebuhr’s prayer. What is certain is that this prayer was a prayer that learned from Joseph’s way of life. Yes, it was Joseph’s way of life, identifying what could not be changed and what should be changed, and trusting God completely for what could not be changed.
Certainly, Joseph was the son of a human being, so he must have had complicated feelings and anger in his heart at times. But from time to time he kept his calmness of mind (serenity) along with his trust before God. And as Joseph trusted in God, although God was not visible to him, He was with him, watching over him and pouring His blessings on him in the midst of his situation. Genesis 39:2-3 describes Joseph’s life in Egypt, where he was sold into slavery.

2 The Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. 3 When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did, 4 Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned. 5 From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the Lord blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the Lord was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field. 6 So Potiphar left everything he had in Joseph’s care; with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate.
The Lord was also with Joseph in the prison, when he was transferred there from his master’s house.
Genesis 39:21-23
21 the Lord was with him; He showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden. 22 So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there. 23 The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph’s care, because the Lord was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.
Dear people in the Lord, there is something to be learned from these things. That is, what we really pray and ask God for is not so much, “Please change his or her heart,” but rather, “Lord, be with me at all times.” Later, Joseph was released from prison in an amazing way and received this evaluation from Pharaoh, king of Egypt, a pagan nation.
Genesis 41:38-41
38 So Pharaoh asked them, “Can we find anyone like this man, one in whom is the spirit of God?” 39 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has made all this known to you, there is no one so discerning and wise as you. 40 You shall be in charge of my palace, and all my people are to submit to your orders. Only with respect to the throne will I be greater than you.” 41 So Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I hereby put you in charge of the whole land of Egypt.”
Joseph was sold to Egypt, a powerful nation at that time, and the pagan Pharaoh referred to him as “one in whom is the spirit of God.” The highest authority in Egypt said this to Joseph, who had been sold into slavery: “You shall be in charge of my palace.” Pharaoh must have seen in Joseph a life lived in the fear of the Lord and shunning evil.
Where did Pharaoh’s assessment of Joseph, “there is no one so discerning and wise as you,” come from? It must have come from the testimony of Joseph’s life, in which he trusted God completely and calmly discerned what “cannot be changed” and what “should be changed”.
And the highlight of Joseph’s life is that after this series of trials, which Joseph had no control over, he was led to one place by God. Although he was sold into slavery, he was eventually raised by Pharaoh to be the vizier of Egypt, the number two position of authority in Egypt. Through this, he was able to bring his father Jacob, and his brothers who had once sold him into slavery, all to Egypt,
to save their lives from a life-threatening situation due to a severe famine. And Joseph, who became the vizier of Egypt, does not take revenge on his brothers who he brought to Egypt, but speaks to them in the following manner.
Genesis 45:7-8
7 “But God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant on earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance. 8 So then, it was not you who sent me here, but God. He made me father to Pharaoh, lord of his entire household and ruler of all Egypt.”
Not once, but two, three times in Joseph’s life, things continued to happen that he did not understand or desire. But he gave them over to the Lord and kept walking, and after going through all of them, he understood then the meaning of what seemed to be the worst events that had ever happened in his life. I had drifted away and ended up in this place due to the envy of my brothers . . . so, I thought. But that is not it. My God has sent me here for this time!
People in the Lord, we have been through a lot and have come to this point. Perhaps some of you are wondering, “How did this happen?” Like Joseph, you may be thinking, “How did I come to this?” But please remember. We are still in the process. We have not yet seen the end of the story. So, let’s not jump to conclusions too soon.
People in the Lord, what a blessing it would be if we could say the same words as Joseph said in our later years.
“So then, it was not you who sent me here, but God.”
A lot has happened in my life. But now, Lord, you have made it clear to me. You sent me here. This is about submitting our lives before God and thanking Him for being with us. I sincerely hope that we can end our lives with gratitude to God, and I would like to live such a life. How about all of you? We believe that day will come, and we will live today and tomorrow.Let us recite those words from Isaiah in our hearts every morning.
Isaiah 55:8-9)
8 “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. 9 “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.”
People in the Lord, to be a Christian is to be a believer. Believers are those who discern “what can be changed and what cannot be changed,” and who trust and entrust to God what is beyond their control.、Do not try to know everything by your own understanding, but believe that God’s thoughts and ways are different from your own thoughts and ways, and that they are far higher than yours. As the word “faith” (信仰in Japanese) suggests, we are to believe (信) in our hearts, lift up our faces, and look up (仰) to the true God. A new week has begun. What lies ahead for us?
What are we surrounded by now? Is it something you can change? If it is something that can be changed, let us step forward and pray, “Lord, give me courage.” If it is something we cannot change, let us trust in the Lord who rules over it in His hands on our behalf.
Let us fear the Lord daily and shun evil. Let us focus on this. People in the Lord, believe in God, lift up your faces, and let us go out from here. Let us pray.
