私はよく神様にこう祈ります「どうぞ〇〇さんが今日、見ること、聞くこと、その生活の中に起きる出来事を通して、あなたご自身がが〇〇さんに語りかけてください。それらによってあなたの存在とあなたの偉大さに気がつかれますように」。主はみ言葉を通して語られると同時に、その日の出来事を通して私達に主の御心を示してくださるお方です。

ヨナ書：神はこうして語られる

聖書の中にはとても興味深い話が出てきます。その筆頭にくるのがヨナ書でありましょう。ヨナ書は子供の絵本になるような話です。ですからこの書を読む人はヨナは架空の人間なのだろうと思います。
しかし、ヨナは聖書中に実際に記録されている実在した人物でありまして、列王記下１４章２３節から２５節にはこう記されています『23ユダの王ヨアシの子アマジヤの第十五年に、イスラエルの王ヨアシの子ヤラべアムがサマリヤで王となって四十一年の間、世を治めた。24彼は主の目の前に悪を行い、イスラエルに罪を犯させたネバテの子ヤラベアムの罪を離れなかった。25彼はハマテの入口からアラバの海まで、イスラエルの領域を回復した。イスラエルの神、主がガテヘペルのアミッタイの子である、そのしもべ預言者ヨナによって言われた言葉のとおりである』この列王記の記録によりますと、そこにはヨナが生きた時代の王の名前とその政権の長さ、ヨナの郷里と父の名前までもが明確に示されています。この記述はヨナが確かに実在した人物だということを示しています。
ヨナ書の要約をまずお話しましょう。ヨナ書は開口一番、このような言葉で始まります。『1主の言葉がアミッタイの子ヨナに臨んで言った、2「立って、あの大きな町ニネベに行き、これに向かって呼ばわれ。彼らの悪がわたしの前に上ってきたからである」』（ヨナ書１章１節－２節）。
ユダヤ人であったヨナは神様から自国イスラエルの敵であるアッシリアの首都ニネベに行って「ニネベの人達の罪のために、この町は滅ぼされる」ということを警告するようにと言われます。言うまでもなくこのアッシリアも歴史上、実在した国でニネベがその首都であったということも史実です。
当時のアッシリアのあったところには今日のイラクがあります。そして、このニネべがあったのは今日、私達がイスラム国関連のニュースでよく聞きますモスルという町です。モスルはかつてイスラム国がその全土を占有していた町です。すなわちこれは今日のユダヤ教徒のラビがICS（イスラム国）の拠点となっているイラクのモスルに行き、拡声マイクを使って罪を悔い改めるようにと叫ぶようなことです。そう考えますとヨナが神様から与えられたミッションがどんなものであったかということが分かると思います。
ですから、ヨナは自分たちの脅威となっている敵国アッシリアに行くのを嫌がり、船に乗って反対の方向にあるタルシシに向かいます。しかし『時に主は大風を海の上に起されたので』（ヨナ１章４節）、その船は沈みかけ、船員達の命が危険にさらされます。
このことに対して、彼らはこの嵐はいったい誰のせいかとクジを引きます。そうしましたところ、ヨナにこのクジがあたり、彼は暴風吹き荒れる海に投げいれられます。その海原に投げられたヨナに対して『主は大いなる魚を備えて、ヨナを飲ませられた』（ヨナ１章１７節）と聖書は記しています。ヨナは結局、三日三晩、その魚の腹の中にいましたが神様が魚に命じられ、魚はヨナを海岸に生きたまま吐きだしました。
人間は誰でも「死ぬ」という宿命を負っています。私にも当然、その日が来ますが、動物に食べられて死ぬのだけはいやだなと思います。熊やライオンにガリガリとかじられながら意識を失っていく自分の姿を想像することはあまりにも痛々しく、それだけは避けたいと思います。ヨナは魚に飲み込まれました。それは「かじられた」のではなく「飲まれた」のですから、それは不幸中の幸いとなりました。かじられたとしたら、肉体が損傷し、おそらくそれが致命傷となりますが、丸のみであるのなら肉体は一応、保たれ、ゆえに肉体に損傷を負うことなく彼は陸に吐き出されました。
このようにノアが三日三晩、魚の腹の中にいるとなると、私達は「ほれみろ、やっぱりヨナ書はおとぎ話だ」と思うのです。しかし、イエス・キリストはこの古の出来事について淡々とこう語っています。
39「邪悪で不義な時代は、しるしを求める。しかし、預言者ヨナのしるしのほかには、なんのしるしも与えられないであろう。40すなわち、ヨナが三日三晩、大魚の腹の中にいたように、人の子も三日三晩、地の中にいるであろう。41ニネベの人々が、今の時代の人々と共にさばきの場に立って、彼らを罪に定めるであろう。なぜなら、ニネベの人々はヨナの宣教によって悔い改めたからである。しかし見よ、ヨナにまさる者がここにいる（マタイ１２章３９節－４１節）。
ここでイエス・キリストはヨナが三日三晩、大魚の腹の中にいたということを話し、そのことが実際にあったように、自分も三日三晩、墓の中にいることになるだろうということを話しています。
ヨナは大魚の腹の中で「わたしは感謝の声をもって、あなたに犠牲を捧げ、わたしの誓いをはたす。救いは主にある」（ヨナ２章９節）と悔い改めとあらたなる決意を祈っています。ゆえに彼は魚の腹の中で心を入れ替えて、神に示されていたニネベに向かい「４０日を経たらニネベは滅びる」と神様の言葉を告げました。
そうしましたら、彼らは王から僕にいたるまで、皆、断食をして悔い改めたというのです。このことにより神様はニネベを滅ぼさずに彼らを救ったのです。しかし、ヨナはこの神様の寛大な対応を非常に不快に感じ、激しく怒り、神様に向かって言います『主よ、わたしがなお国におりました時、この事を申したではありませんか。それでこそわたしは、急いでタルシシにのがれようとしたのです。なぜなら、わたしはあなたが恵み深い神、あわれみあり、怒ることおそく、いつくしみ豊かで、災を思いかえされることを、知っていたからです。3それで主よ、どうぞ今わたしの命をとってください。わたしにとっては、生きるよりも死ぬ方がましだからです』（ヨナ４章２節、３節）。
ヨナとしては敵国には滅びてもらいたい、滅んでもらわなければ困るという気持ちがあったにも関わらず、彼が告げた言葉により不本意にも彼らは回心してしまい、そのことに対して神のあわれみと恵みが注がれ、彼らは滅びを免れてしまった、そのことにヨナは打ちのめされ、激怒し、途方に暮れたのです。
そんな苦々しい思いを内に秘めながら、彼はニネべの今後を見届けようと町の郊外に小屋を建てます。そのヨナに対して『時に主なる神は、ヨナを暑さの苦痛から救うために、とうごまを備えて、それを育て、ヨナの頭の上に日陰を設けた』（ヨナ４章６節）とヨナ書は記しています。灼熱の日々、ヨナはこの木を非常に喜びますが『7神は翌日の夜明けに虫を備えて、そのとうごまをかませられたので、それは枯れた。8やがて太陽が出たとき、神が暑い東風を備え、また太陽がヨナの頭を照した』（ヨナ４章７節、８節）ので、ヨナは弱りはて、死ぬことを願ってこう言いました『生きるよりも死ぬ方がわたしにはましだ』（ヨナ４章８節）、『わたしは怒りのあまり狂い死にそうです』（ヨナ４章９節）。
このヨナに対して神様は言います「とうごまのためにあなたの怒るのはよくない」ヨナは答えます「わたしは怒りのあまり狂い死にそうです」そして、このヨナ書はこのような神様の言葉で閉じられるのです『あなたは労せず、育てず、一夜に生じて、一夜に滅びたこのとうごまをさえ、惜しんでいる。11ましてわたしは十二万あまりの、右左をわきまえない人々と、あまたの家畜とのいるこの大きな町ニネベを、惜しまないでいられようか』（ヨナ４章１０節－１１節）。
私達は去る二回のメッセージでアモスとホセアというイスラエルの預言者についてみてまいりました。言うまでもなく聖書はイスラエル民族の物語であります。しかし、それはイスラエルの民達の歴史なのではなくて、彼らと共にある神とイスラエルが紡いでいる物語なのです。ですから、その中心には常にイスラエルがおり、それは旧約聖書全体に言えることで、旧約聖書は主にイスラエルを通してなされる神の救済史が記されています。
そう考えますとイスラエル人、すなわちユダヤ人でない私達のような異邦人はそれを不公平だと思ったり自分とは関係のないように感じるのです。しかし、一見、イスラエルを中心として世界と他民族を見ているような旧約聖書の中でこのヨナ書は将来につながる驚くべきメッセージを語っているのです。
すなわちこのヨナ書の最後の言葉は神の恵みとあわれみはイスラエルだけにではなく全ての人に注がれているということです。この点においてヨナ書は旧約聖書の中で異色かつ、これから続いていく新約の時代の神の恵みを指し示している書なのです。これがヨナ書のテーマであり、その物語を紡ぐためにヨナという存在がありました。
ヨナは自他共に認める預言者です。ですから神様の御声を聞けば、それをそのまま示された時に、示された場所で語ることが彼がすべきことです。しかし、彼はそれが嫌で示された場所に向かわず全く別の方向へと向かうべく舟にのりました。明らかにそれは神様がヨナに対して願っていることとは違いました。このことは神様が最初の人間を創られた時に人に与えた一つのことゆえにおきました。そうです、それは私達全ての人間に与えられている「自由な意志」です。神様はその御心に人が従うか従わないかということの最終的な決断を人間の側に与えておられるのです。ヨナはその自由意志を行使して預言者でありながら、その神の言葉に従わなかったのです。
ヨナ書には五回だけヨナに語り掛ける神の言葉が書かれています。今日のタイトルは「神はこうして語られる」ということです。神は言葉のみならず、私達に起こることを通して語られます。そう、それは主のはたらきを通して私達に語られるということです。
神に従わなく別方向に向かったヨナが乗った船に対して『時に主は大風を海の上に起されたので』（ヨナ１章４節）、くじをひいたところ、その原因はヨナと分かりました。ゆえにヨナは海に投げられたところ『主は大いなる魚を備えて、ヨナを飲ませられた』（ヨナ１章１７節）のです。その魚の腹の中という全く想定外の場所でヨナはそれまでの歩みを悔い改めたのです。これらの一連の背後には主の存在がありました。そこに主の言葉は一言もありませんが、そこには確かに主のはたらきによる語りかけがありました。
神に従わずに己が道に突き進もうとしているノアに対して神は暴風をもって、また魚に飲まさせることにより語りかけ、彼は一切、自分の力が何も役に立たず、身動き一つできない暗黒の魚の腹の中でヨナは悟ったのです。
そしてヨナは陸に吐き出されてから当初、言われていたようにニネベに向かい、主から授かりました言葉を語りました。やっと彼本来の使命をそこで果たしたのです。そうしましたら、彼らは断食をし、大きいものから小さい者にいたるまで、皆が悔い改め、彼らが滅ぼされることは免れたのです。ヨナはこのニネベの人達の回心を見て非常に不快に思い、ニネベの動向を見極めようと小屋を建てます。そんなヨナに対して主は、はたらきかけます。
『時に主なる神は、ヨナを暑さの苦痛から救うために、とうごまを備えて、それを育て、ヨナの頭の上に日陰を設けた』（ヨナ４章６節）のです。ヨナはそれを喜びます。しかし、神様は夜明けに虫を備えて、そのとうごまを枯らし、神様は暑い東風をもって再びヨナを猛暑の只中に置きます。『7神は翌日の夜明けに虫を備えて、そのとうごまをかませられたので、それは枯れた。8やがて太陽が出たとき、神が暑い東風を備え、また太陽がヨナの頭を照した』（ヨナ４章７節、８節）。
ヨナが喜ぶとうごまを生えさせたのは主、一夜にしてそのとうごまを枯らせたのは主、そして暑い東風を吹かせ、灼熱の太陽をヨナの上に照らしたのも主でした。とうごまの木が彼に心地よい日陰を与えたことには喜んだヨナでしたが、このとうごまが一夜に枯れたことに対してヨナは激怒し、「生きるよりも死ぬほうがましだ」と自分の命を取ってくれと開き直りました。
このところで神様は彼に「言葉」を語るのではなく、彼の「環境」を用いて彼に語りかけました。ここから主は私達に私達が日々、暮らしている環境を通して語りかけるお方であることが分かります。そう、私達がそのことを通して神のお心を悟ることを期待しておられるのです。
しかしながら、このことをお話しする前にまず私達が理解しておかなければならないことは、私達の身の回りに起きます出来事は神様が全て故意に行っていることではないということです。空に向けて投げたボールは必ず落ちてきます。燃え盛る火の中に手を入れれば私達は必ず焼けどします。毒を飲めば、私達の肉体は急激に弱ります。なぜなら、それがこの世界の法則だからです。このように私達の身のまわりで起きる出来事には「原因」と「結果」で成り立っており、それゆえに私達は願っていない環境に置かれることがあります。これらは神が私達に意図的にしていることではありません。
しかし、同時に私達は神様がヨナに対してなされたように私達に大切なことに気がつかせるために私達をある出来事に向き合わせることがあります。私達はそのことを通して神の存在を知り、同時に自らの心が照らされ、神の心を知るのです。
イエス様はかつて、世の終りの前兆について問われた時には偽の救世主や預言者があらわれたり、天変地異が起こると私達を取り囲む環境の変化を具体的に話されてからこう言われました。28いちじくの木からこの譬を学びなさい。その枝が柔らかになり、葉が出るようになると、夏の近いことがわかる。29そのように、これらの事が起るのを見たならば、人の子が戸口まで近づいていると知りなさい。30よく聞いておきなさい。これらの事が、ことごとく起るまでは、この時代は滅びることがない。31天地は滅びるであろう。しかしわたしの言葉は滅びることがない（マルコ１３章２８節－３１節）
イエス様はここで「これらの出来事を見過ごすことがないように。これらの出来事が起きたら何が近いのかを考える者となりなさい」と言っているのです。あなたの世界で起きてくるこれらの事象が何を意味しているのかを考えなさいというのです。
私達のクリスチャン信仰は聖書を土台としています。聖書信仰とは聖書のみ言葉を私達の生きる指針とするということです。まさしくその神の言葉は「天地が滅びても、滅びることのない言葉です」この御言葉に対する私達の信仰は不動のものです。私達はその御言葉によって日々の生活の生き方を示され、教えられていくのです。
しかし、同時に私達は私達の身の回りで起きている出来事と体験から神様のメッセージを聞くのです。いちじくの木から夏が近いことが分かるように、思いがけない出来事が起こるのなら、私達はそこから神のメッセージを聞き取るのです。
ヨナはエルサレムの神殿で神の御声を聞いたのではなく、大魚の胃袋の中で祈り、悔い改めたのです。喜んでいたトウゴマの木が枯れた時に、彼は怒り、命までとってくれと言いました。そう、それが自分という人間の赤裸々な姿です。一本のトウゴマの木が枯れただけで、憤りと共にその自らの生死について語っているその状況の只中でイスラエルに対する将来につながる神様の御心に光が照らされ、そこに特筆すべき言葉が語られたのです。
主にある皆さん、私達は私達が日々、直面する出来事に見事に一喜一憂します。喜びならいいのですが、試みになりますと、このことは時に私達は打ちのめされます。好ましいことなら、ああ嬉しい、幸せ、最高と思い、試練となりますと、ああ悲しい、不幸、最悪と嘆きます。おそらくほとんどの私達はこれらの環境をこのような私達の感情による反応だけで受け止めます。しかし、今日、私達がヨナ書で見てきたことは、これらのことの背後に神がはたらいており、私達に何かを悟らせようとしているのです。
自分の思い通りに行かない時が一番、苦しいものです。しかし、そこに神のはたらきがありませんか。自分がこれぞ自分の生き方と思い、突き進んだ時に、ヨナの前途に暴風が吹き荒れたように、私達の前に立ちはだかるものがあるのなら、神様は私達に今一度、そのことを思い直すことを勧めていらっしゃるのかもしれません。しかし、さらにそこに邁進しますと、ヨナのが魚に飲まれてしまったように、自ら全く身動きできない無力さというものをしみじみと知らされるかもしれません。ああ、このことを知らせるために神は私をこのように導かれているのだと悟る人はさいわいです。
おそらくヨナは今日で言いますのなら、アンガーマネージメントをすることができない人だったのだと思われます。自分の思い通りにならないと激怒し、死を望むという非常に激やすい人です。しかし、そのヨナの欠点と思われる性格を通して神は真理を語りかけたのです。
神様は私達の体験する出来事の中にメッセージを込めておられるのです。神様は待たれます。その状況、その環境の中で本人が気がつくまで神様は待ちます。愛とは強制ではなく自発的なものだからです。このようなことを色々な局面を通ったであろう、イエスの愛弟子ペテロは悟ったのでしょう。こう書き記しました。
12愛する者たちよ。あなたがたを試みるために降りかかって来る火のような試錬を、何か思いがけないことが起ったかのように驚きあやしむことなく13むしろ、キリストの苦しみにあずかればあずかるほど、喜ぶがよい。それはキリストの栄光が現れる際に、よろこびにあふれるためである（ペテロ第一の手紙４章１２節－１３節）。
ペテロは「わたしたちの上に降りかかって来る火のような試練を、何か思いがけないことが起こったかのように驚き怪しむな」といいました。なぜなら、その試みの中にも神様のメッセージが込められているからです。そして、そのメッセージは直面している試みを通して、さらに大切なことを私達に気がつかせようとしているということなのです。
私はよくこう祈ります「どうぞ○○さんが今日、見ること、聞くこと、その生活の中に起きる出来事の中であなたが彼に、彼女に語りかけてください。それらによってあなたの存在とあなたの偉大さに気がつかれますように」。主はみ言葉を通して語られると同時に、その日の出来事を通して私達に主の御心を示してくださるお方だからです。こう考えます時に、皆さん、何か心当たりとなることがありませんか。今、直面していること、あのこと、このこと、特にそれが試練と思われること、実はその背後にその試練をもってもおつりがくるほどの大切な私達が知るべき神の私達に対する思いが隠されているのです。
主よ、どうか私達が生活するなかで向きあう出来事に対して、それを何か思いがけないことが起こったかのように驚き怪しむことがありませんように。主は私達の目の前に起きていることを通して、その御心を教えてくださるお方です。私達がその主からのメッセージを聞き取ることができ、それを聞いたのならヨナのように主に立ち返ることができますように。我々の人生の目的は私達の思い通りの人生を送るということではなく、その人生を通して主を知ることができるようにという人生なのです。
『苦しみにあったことは、わたしには良いことです。これによってわたしはあなたのおきてを学ぶことができました』（詩篇１１９：７１）
もう一度、申し上げます。私達は自分の人生は自分の夢や願いが叶う人生を送りたいと願います。しかし、神の私達に対する思いはそれとは異なり、私達の人生を通して、私達の命の源なる神を知るということ、それが私達の人生の究極的な目的なのです。そして、思えばこれらのことを思いますのなら、私達の人生に起きる全てのことは、主を知るということに一役を担っているのです。お祈りしましょう。
Jonah: The way God speaks to us

There is an interesting story in the Bible and one of the book is Jonah. It is like a fairy tale for children. Therefore, we think Jonah is a fictional character.
But Jonah is the person who really existed. The second King 14:23-25 recorded about him. “23 In the fifteenth year of Amaziah son of Joash king of Judah, Jeroboam son of Jehoash king of Israel became king in Samaria, and he reigned forty-one years. 24 He did evil in the eyes of the Lord and did not turn away from any of the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit. 25 He was the one who restored the boundaries of Israel from Lebo Hamath to the Dead Sea, in accordance with the word of the Lord, the God of Israel, spoken through his servant Jonah son of Amittai, the prophet from Gath Hepher (2 Kings 14:23-25).
This record mentions the name of the King at that time and the length of his regime, and also mentioned about Jonah’s hometown and his father’s name. Therefore, it is clearly proved that Jonah was existed.
I will explain a little bit about the summary of the book of Jonah. The book begins with; 1 The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai: 2 “Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.”
Jonah is a Jews. He was told by God to go to the capital of Assyria, Nineveh which is the enemy of Israel, and because of their sins, God want Jonah proclaim they will be overthrown. Needless to say, Assyria and Nineveh existed as a real ancient nation and capital in our history.
There is an Iraqi now where Assyria used to be, and the Nineveh is the place, we call today Mosul which we heard often in News. Yes, Mosul used to be the territory of ICS. So, what Jonah was told by God was like the rabbi of Jews goes to Mosul today and proclaim them “repent”. Now we understand what was the mission of Jonah.
Therefore, Jonah did not want to go to Nineveh but take a ship and headed for Tarshish which is the opposite direction from Nineveh. But 4 Then the Lord sent a great wind on the sea (Jonah 1:4), and the ship threatened to break up and the sailors faced the risk of their life.
So, they cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity and the lot fell on Jonah. Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard. The Bible said 17 Now the Lord provided a huge fish to swallow Jonah (Jonah 1:17). Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights and God told the fish to vomit (Jonah 1:17).
We all have fate of death. The day is coming to me. I accept the fact but I do not want to die by eating animals. I do not want to pass out by biting bear or lion. It is too painful for me. The fish swallow Jonah. It is not bite but swallow, he was lucky because his body was not injured. He could survive as long as he still has his body without any injured, and the fish vomited Jonah onto dry land.
When we heard about this kind of story, we say “oh this is fiction. It was just made up”, but Jesus Christ was talking about Jonah like this.
39 “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.41 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now something greater than Jonah is here (Matthew 12:39-41).
Jesus talked about Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of fish with a-matter-of-fact attitude. He did not say that was a fiction but he was talking about it as the things really happened, and he talked about he will be also three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Jonah shouted with grateful praise in the belly of fish, he said I will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good. I will say, ‘Salvation comes from the Lord.’” (Jonah 2:9). He repents and show his willingness to go to Nineveh in the belly of the fish, and he actually went there and proclaimed “it will be destroyed after forty days”.
When the people of Ninevites heard about that message, they all believed God and they fast from the greatest to the least, and when God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened. But Jonah upset and complain the generous of God. 2 “Isn’t this what I said, Lord, when I was still at home? That is what I tried to forestall by fleeing to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity. 3 Now, Lord, take away my life, for it is better for me to die than to live.” (Jonah 4:2-3).
Jonah was wishing the destruction of his enemy, but they repented and God forgive them with His grace and mercy. Jonah was discouraged, angry and desperate.
Jonah had gone out and sat down at a place east of the city. There he made himself a shelter, sat in its shade and waited to see what would happen to the city. 6 Then the Lord God provided a leafy plant and made it grow up over Jonah to give shade for his head to ease his discomfort, and Jonah was very happy about the plant (Jonah 4:6), 7 But at dawn the next day God provided a worm, which chewed the plant so that it withered. 8 When the sun rose, God provided a scorching east wind, and the sun blazed on Jonah’s head so that he grew faint (Jonah 4:7-8). So, he wanted to die, and said, “It would be better for me to die than to live.” (Jonah 4:7-8). “I’m so angry I wish I were dead.” (Jonah4:9).
God told him, “Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?” but Jonah said “I’m so angry I wish I were dead.”, and then this book is closed with the words of God like this;10 But the Lord said, “You have been concerned about this plant, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight. 11 And should I not have concern for the great city of Nineveh, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left—and also many animals?” (Jonah 4:10-11).
We had focus the prophet Amos and Hosea last two Sunday. They are prophet of Israel and the Bible is the story of God and the people of Israel. Therefore, it is focused to the Israel, especially in the Old Testament. The OT was especially writing about the salvation of Israel.
If we look at the Bible like this, we, gentiles feel it is not fair and feel God is not related with us. But even though it seems Israel is the center of the other nations and people in the Bible, but the book of Jonah indicates the message that will be connected to God’ future plan.
It is the fact that God’ grace and mercy is pour not only Israel but also every person. Therefore, the book of Jonah is very unique and show the grace of God in the coming age of New Testament. This is the theme of the book of Jonah, and Jonah was there for this.
As we know, Jonah is a prophet. His mission is to listen the words of God, and tell the words to the people at the place and the time God told him, but, he did not want to go there and headed to different direction. Clearly it is not what God want him to do. This was happened by our free will. God gives us the choice to follow Him or not. Jonah, even though he is a prophet, he did not follow God’s words.
The book of Jonah mentions the words of God to Jonah five times. Today’s message title is “God speak to us in this way”. God speaks us through His words and also, he speaks us through the things happen to us. God speak to us through His works.
When Jonah took a ship, which headed to different direction from Nineveh, 4 Then the Lord sent a great wind on the sea (Jonah 1:4), and, they found the cause of the storm is Jonah, so Jonah was throw into the sea, and 17 Now the Lord provided a huge fish to swallow Jonah (Jonah 1:17). Jonah repent in the belly of the fish where he was not expected, and there is the Lord behind all these things. God did not speak by His words, but He speak to him through His works.
God spoke him through the storm and the fish, and Jonah realized in the berry of fish where he cannot move and useless any of his strength in the darkness.
And the fish vomited Jonah to the ground, and he headed to Nineveh, and proclaimed the words God gave to him. He finally accomplished his mission, and by hearing Jonah’s warning, the Ninevites repent and saved from their destruction. Jonah disappointed to see their repentance and made a shelter and waited to see what would happen to the city. God works to him at that time.
6 Then the Lord God provided a leafy plant and made it grow up over Jonah to give shade for his head to ease his discomfort, and Jonah was very happy about the plant (Jonah 4:6). 7 But at dawn the next day God provided a worm, which chewed the plant so that it withered. 8 When the sun rose, God provided a scorching east wind, and the sun blazed on Jonah’s head so that he grew faint (Jonah 4:8).
When Jonah did not listen and follow God’ words, what God did to Jonah? He did not speak to him, but He speak to him by through his situations. Now, we find God speak to us through the situation we are facing. God want us to realize His thoughts by the situation we are placed.
But we also need to understand which is what the things happen around us is not all His works. When we throw the ball in the sky, the ball will fall. When we touched the fire, we will be burned. If we drink the poison, our body will get weak, because this is the natural law. Many of the things happens around us is consist of Cause and Result, and because of that we sometime have to face the situation which we do not want to. These are not what God’s intentional works to us.
But also, we need to know God works for us to realize the something important and something beneficial for us. We know more about God and find our mind through these His works.
Jesus was asked by his disciples about the signs of the end of the world and he responded, false messiahs and false prophets will appear and heaven and earth will be shaken, and after that he said; 28 “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 29 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that it is near, right at the door. 30 Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away (Mark 13:28-31).
Jesus said “Do not miss the things happened before you, and know what is going to be happen when you see these incident”. Jesus tells us think about the meaning of the incident which is happening in our world.
Our Christian faith is based on the Bible. We respect the Bible as our guideline of our life. We believe Heaven and earth will pass away, but His words will never pass away. This promise will not decline forever. We are taught and direct our life by the words of God.
But at the same time, we also listen God’s message through the incident happening around us and our experience. As soon as twigs get tender and its leaves come out, as we know that summer is near, if the things we are not expected happen, we will try to listen His message from that.
Jonah did not listen God’s words at the temple in Jerusalem, but he prayed and repent in the berry of the fish. He gets angry when the tree was withered and said take his life! And his complain withdraw the words of God which shines the future of this world.
Dear brothers and sisters, we always facing so many things and we glad and we sad. It is ok if it is glad, but if that is hardship or trial, we are broken and desperate. If it is good news, we glad, feel happiness and think it is the best moment of our life, but if that is hardship and trial, we sad, feel unhappiness and think it is the worst moment of our life.
Usually, we feel these good and bad with our emotion, but what We have seen in the book of Jonah is God is working behind these things and want us to realize something important, something beneficial for us.
It is big challenge when we cannot do as we are wishing and hoping, but don’t you think there is God’ work out there? When we walk our way as we are wishing, if unexpected storm come to us, God might ask you to think about your way, but if we still hanging our wish and move on our way, Like Jonah was swallowed by fish and lost all his freedom, we also might down into the same situation. We are blessed if we realize God’ plan and thought when we are in the midst of unexpected situation.
Probably, Jonah is the person who could not control his anger. He gets mad when he cannot do as he wants to, and wish his death soon, but God use his imperfect character and speak to us about His truth.God included His message in the incidents we are experiencing. God will wait until we notice and realize His message. Love is not the forced one, but it gives us the freedom. The disciple of Jesus, Peter experienced so many situation in good and bad, and realize the truth and he wrote about it.
12 Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.13 But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed (1 Peter 4:12-13).
Peter said do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. Because God speaks to us in that trial and through the trial, God want us to realize something important for us.
I pray like this sometime; God, may you speak to them through the things they are seeing and hearing every day. May they find the greatness of you in these things. God speaks to you by not only His words but also by the things happen to us every day. God’s thoughts are hiding in that situations.
Dear Lord, may we will not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on us to test us, as though something strange were happening to us. You teach us your will through the things happen to us. May we can listen from you, and when we listen, may we will return to your will. Our purpose of life is not live as we are wishing but to know the Lord though our life.
It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees (Psalm 119:71).
I will tell you again. We wish to have our life filled with our dreams and the dreams come true, but sometimes God has different thoughts for us. He wants us to know Him through our life, that is our ultimate purpose of our life, and when we think about this, we realize everything happens to our life give us the opportunity to reach that purpose. ヨナ書は一見、おとぎ話のように思えます。しかし、列王記下１４章２３節－２５節、マタイ１２章３９節－４１節などを読みますとヨナは実在した人物であることが分かります。
１）ヨナがアッシリアのニネべに向かうことは今日、ユダヤ教のラビがイラクのモスル（イスラム国の拠点）において彼らに悔い改めを求めるようなものです。あなたがヨナならニネべに向かいますか。
２）ヨナは神の言葉に聞き従わずに別の方向に向かって出航しました。その結果どうなりましたか（ヨナ１章４節－１７節）ヨナに起きた一連のことの中に神様はどのようにはたらきかけましたか（４節、１７節に注目）。
３）神の御心に従わずに自分の欲する道を選んだ時に、その道を引き返させようとするような出来事を経験したことがありますか。
４）ヨナは魚に飲まれることにより、神が示されたようにニネべに行き、民に警告します。ニネべの民はその警告を真摯に受け止め悔い改め、それ故に神の裁きを免れます。このことにヨナは失望し、怒ります。ヨナのこの時の心情はどんなものだったのでしょうか。
５）苦々しい思いを持ちながらヨナはニネべ郊外に小屋を建てます。ヨナ４章６節－１０節を読みましょう。神様はこの時、ヨナにどのようにはたらきかけていますか。
６）一本のトウゴマを惜しむヨナに対して神様はなんと語りかけますか（４章１０節）。
７）ヨナが置かれている環境にはたらきかけ、そこから神様は無言のメッセージを彼に語りかけました。私達もヨナのように私達が置かれている環境から神様の語りかけを聞くことがあります。あなたには思い当たることがありますか。どうしたらこの語りかけを察知することができるのでしょうか。
