私たちは若い時には自由に生きることができました。どちらかというと、自分の時間が自由にとれて、好きな所にもたやすく行けることが多かったのです。しかし、年をとるにつれて、自分一人で自由に行動できる範囲が狭まってきました。家庭や仕事の責任が負かされるということは、私達の時間が拘束されることであり、犠牲にする自分の時間が増えることです。
また、誰しもが老いていくということ、それは私達のそれまでの自由に制限が加えられるということを意味します。好きな時に好きな場所に自由に行けることが段々と難しくなり、誰かの都合に合わせて、その人に連れていってもらうということになりました。今まで簡単に自由に行けていたことが、そうたやすく行けなくなってきたということは、誰しもが体験することでありましょう・・・。

ヨハネ：自由人にふさわしく

今日、私達が見てまいります書はイエス・キリストの１２弟子の一人で、その中でも一番、若かったヨハネが書いたヨハネによる福音書です。かつてヨハネはキリストから「雷の子」と命名されるほどに短気な人でありましたが、イエス様の愛にその心が変えられ、最後には口を開けば「愛」しか語らない人となりました。私達はこのヨハネの生涯を思う時に私達の性格や気質までもがキリストにあって変えられるという希望をもちます。
イエス様が十字架にかかる時、その全ての弟子達が皆、イエス様を見捨てて逃げてしまった中でこのヨハネだけがイエス様の十字架の姿を間近に見ていました。彼は後、ローマ帝国の迫害にあい、エーゲ海に浮かぶパトモス島に幽閉され、そこで見た幻をもってヨハネの黙示録を書き記しました。その年代の前後、その人生の晩年にヨハネ独特の洞察によってこのヨハネによる福音書は書かれており、その書の冒頭から他の三書とは異なり、ヨハネのユニークさがあらわれています。
1初めに言があった。言は神と共にあった。言は神であった。2この言は初めに神と共にあった。3すべてのものは、これによってできた。できたもののうち、一つとしてこれによらないものはなかった。4この言に命があった。そしてこの命は人の光であった。5光はやみの中に輝いている。そして、やみはこれに勝たなかった（ヨハネ１章１節－５節）。
聖書の一番最初、すなわち創世記の出だしは『はじめに神は天と地を創造された』で始まり、その後すぐに『神は「光あれ」と言われた。すると光があった』と記されています。ですからヨハネは明らかにここで創世記を意識しています。この世界は神の言葉で始まったということ、すなわち初めから言葉が神と共にあったということ。その言葉が語られるところに事は起こり、まさしく言葉は神であったということ。さらに彼はそこから展開して、この言葉には命があり、この言葉こそが人の光であり、それは闇の中に輝いているというのです。
神が「言葉」というものをまず、その土台としていることに、私達は全てを知り尽くされた神様の偉大な知恵を感じます。もしクリスチャニティーがある雰囲気によってもたらされる感覚、すなわちフィーリングだけに訴えられるものであったのなら、それはとうの昔に消滅していたことでしょう。しかし「あぁ、今、鳥肌がたったよ～」とか「いや～厳かな気持ちになりますな～」というような「フィーリング」が私達の生き方を変えることはまずありません。フィーリングは一時、私達の心に訴えかけてきますが、ある時が過ぎますとそれはやがて消えていきます。
しかし、もし私達の心に「言葉」が語りかけてきますのなら、それは私達の感情に語りかけ、また私達の理性に語りかけ、その言葉はやがて私達の心に刻まれていき、私達は人生に起きる様々な出来事に対する具体的な指針をその言葉によって得るようになります。このことが２０００年来、無数の人達の心に起きてきたために今日も私達の世界には教会が存在しているのです。
このように私達の世界に語りかける神の言葉についてさらに踏み込んでヨハネはこう書きました『そして言は肉体となり、わたしたちのうちに宿った。わたしたちはその栄光を見た。それは父のひとり子としての栄光であって、めぐみとまこととに満ちていた』（ヨハネ１章１４節）。
ヨハネは驚くべきことを書きました、そう、天地創造の初めからあった言葉が肉体をとったというのです。しかも、その言葉が私達のうちに宿ったというのです。これは何を意味しているのでしょうか。そうです、これはクリスマスの出来事、すなわちイエス・キリストが人の姿、すなわち肉体をとられてこの世界に生まれ、この世界を生きたということです。その姿を通してヨハネは栄光を見たというのです。その栄光とは世の中がいうところの華やかさではなくて、神の栄光であり、彼は恵みとまこととに満ちていたというのです。
神が私達のためにキリストをこの地に送ってくださったことにより、そのキリストの言動によって私達は生きる指針を得ることができるのです。人はその言葉、すなわち聖書の言葉の一節を冷蔵庫にはったり、暖炉の上に飾ったり、プロフットボール選手はその顔にペイントし、その言葉の上に米国大統領は手を置いて宣誓し、その言葉をもって私達は人生に起こるありとあらゆる問題に向き合うのです。
この言葉についてお話することは山ほどありますが、今日はその中でこの「言葉」にこだわったヨハネによる福音書に記されている一つのことをお話します。キリストはかつて自分を信じたユダヤ人達にこう言われました。もしわたしの言葉のうちにとどまっておるなら、あなたがたは、ほんとうにわたしの弟子なのである。32また真理を知るであろう。そして真理は、あなたがたに自由を得させるであろう」。（ヨハネ８章３１節－３２節）。
ここでキリストは私達の関心をひくことを言われました。なぜ、この言葉が私たちの関心を引くのでしょうか。なぜなら、ここには「自由」という言葉が書かれており、私たちはその言葉に反応するからです。それはとても魅力的で、多くのティーンはこの自由が欲しいと早く、１８歳になって、家を出て行くことを心待ちにしています。毎日、決まった時刻に出勤し、残業をし、時間に追われながら仕事をしている者たちにとって、時間を気にせずに自由きままに一日を過ごせるというのはとても魅力的でありましょう。ある人達は結婚や親であるということが束縛と思え、そこから自由になりたいと願い、ただならぬ道に向かって歩み始める人もいることでしょう。さて、それでは聖書が言っている自由とは何なのでしょうか。
同じくヨハネ２１書からみてみましょう。ここに書かれていることは「死ぬようなことがあっても、あなたに従っていきます」と豪語したにもかかわらず、全くその言葉に従い得ず、結果的にはイエス様を裏切ってしまったイエスの弟子ペテロが十字架にかかり、死んで復活されたイエスと会い、そのところで三度「わたしを愛するか」ということを問われた後の出来事です。その時、イエス様はペテロにこういわれました。18よくよくあなたに言っておく。あなたが若かった時には、自分で帯をしめて、思いのままに歩きまわっていた。しかし年をとってからは、自分の手をのばすことになろう。そして、ほかの人があなたに帯を結びつけ、行きたくない所へ連れて行くであろう」。19これは、ペテロがどんな死に方で、神の栄光をあらわすかを示すために、お話しになったのである。こう話してから、「わたしに従ってきなさい」と言われた（ヨハネ２１章１８節－１９節）。
この個所においてイエス様は自由について語られました。つまり、それはペテロの自由です。聖書にイエスがこう言ったと書かれています。「あなたが若かった時には、自分で帯を締めて、思いのままに歩きまわっていた」（１８）これこそ、多くの人が求めている生き方です。自分で自分の帯をしめる。帯は主に腰にまかれる。腰は要という字がそこにあるがごとく、力の源である。物を運ぶにも、歩くにも腰の力が重要である。その人間の力の源を自分でしめることができるとは、まさしく、自分で自分のことは何でもすることが出来るということでありましょう。まさしく、ペテロはこれまでそのように生きてきました。
しかし、これからは違うよとイエス様は言われました。これからは「自分の手を伸ばし、そして、他の人があなたに帯を結び付け、行きたくない所へ連れて行くだろう」とイエス様は言われたのです。これからのペテロの人生は違うのだよというのです。
皆さん、この言葉は、よく考えると私たちの生涯にも当てはまるように思えます。確かに私たちは若い時には自由に生きることができました。どちらかというと、自分の時間が自由にとれて、好きな所にもたやすく行けることが多かったのです。しかし、年をとるにつれて、自分一人で自由に行動できる範囲が狭まってきました。家庭や仕事の責任が負かされるということは、私達の時間が拘束されることであり、犠牲にする自分の時間が増えることです。

そう考えると「他の人があなたに帯を結びつける」と「行きたくない所へ連れて行く」とは、私たちにも言えることが分かります。実際にペテロの場合はその後、イエスが言われた通りに縄で縛られ、獄にも投じられますし、手足を縛られ逆さはりつけにされて殉教したといいます。
しかし驚くべきことにそのペテロがペテロ第一の手紙２章の中でこう書いています。『16自由人にふさわしく行動しなさい。ただし、自由をば悪を行う口実として用いず、神の僕にふさわしく行動しなさい』（ペテロ第一の手紙２章１６節）この手紙はペテロによりＡＤ６３年頃に書かれたもので、その時はローマ帝国のネロによるキリスト教徒に対する迫害が日増しに強くなってきている時でした。それはイエス様が先にお話しましたことを語られてから、さらに３０年あまりの時がたった後のことでした。ペテロは自らの身柄が自由ではない状況の中で書いたのです。
これはとても不思議な言葉です。なぜならペテロはイエス様により、既に自由を失った身であるはずだからです。この言葉は自分は自由人であるということを確信し、それを前提とした言葉だからです。そう、彼は強がりでもない、キリストに従うことにより、すなわちキリストの言葉に生きるようになり、まことの自由を発見したのです。
この言葉の後にペテロは続けて書きました。「あなたがたは羊のようにさ迷っていたが、今は魂の牧者であり、監督である方のもとにたち帰ったのである」（２５）そう、彼はさとったのです。自分が若い時に感じていた自由は自由に見えたけれど、それは神の側から見れば、「羊のようにさまよっていたのだ」「自分は自由と思えるものものを謳歌していたけれど、実際のところはその自由によってさ迷っていた」のだと。
若者は自由を求めます。そして時が来れば彼らはそれを得ます。待ちにまった日です。早速、彼らはその自由を行使します。しかし、やがて彼らは気がつきます。その自由が色々なかたちで自分を不自由にしていることに。
ここまでお話してきますと、どうやら聖書が言っている自由と私達が言っている自由とは違うらしいということが分かります。聖書が言っている自由について実は先に読みましたヨハネの続きにこう書かれているのです。
33そこで、彼らはイエスに言った、「わたしたちはアブラハムの子孫であって、人の奴隷になったことなどは、一度もない。どうして、あなたがたに自由を得させるであろうと、言われるのか」。34イエスは彼らに答えられた、「よくよくあなたがたに言っておく。すべて罪を犯す者は罪の奴隷である。35そして、奴隷はいつまでも家にいる者ではない。しかし、子はいつまでもいる。36だから、もし子があなたがたに自由を得させるならば、あなたがたは、ほんとうに自由な者となるのである（ヨハネ８章３１節－３６節）。
キリストにとって自由か否かの一つの見定めとなるものは私達が罪の奴隷であるかどうかということであり、もし罪の奴隷であるのなら私達に自由はなく、もし、私達が罪の奴隷ではないのなら私達はただそのことだけで全くの自由の中を生きているというのです。たとえ私達の体が不自由であっても、私達が罪の奴隷でないのなら私達はペテロが言うところの自由人なのです。
さて、ここで最初の言葉にもどります。ペテロは自分の帯を他の人に握られました。その彼には自由がなかったのでしょうか。彼は投獄されて牢屋の中にいた時に賛美しました。言い伝えによれば、彼の最後は自ら願い出て逆さ貼りつけになり、絶命したといいます。
彼はイエスの言葉に止まっておりました。確かに自分の帯の所有権はなくなりました。しかし、彼はそのような中でもキリストにある本当の自由を持ちえたのです。彼は人間的自由を失ったように見えたが、彼はキリスト者の本当の自由を獲得したのです。
皆さん、私達も様々な自由を失います。しかし、それは私達が本当の自由を失ったこととは違うのです。確かに私達は自分が思うように自由な時間を使うことができないかもしれません。自由に自分の思うとおりに動けないかもしれません。しかし、私達の魂はキリストにあっていつも自由です。ゆえに私達もペテロと同じように「自由人」として、それにふさわしく日々の生活を生きることができるのです。私達はいつもその自由な生涯に招かれているのです。

What we are seeing
today is the book of John which written by one of Christ disciple, John. John
was once called the son of thunder and he was very short temper, but the love
of Christ touched his heart and he was changed and became the person who only talks
about love. When we think about the life of John, we have hope that even our
character will be changed by Christ.
When Jesus was
crucified, every other disciple ran away from him, but only John was remained
and he witnessed Christ on the cross. At the end of his life, John was confined
in the Patmos Island by Roman Emperor and he wrote the Revelation in the island
by seeing the vision. At the same time, John also wrote the book of John, and
the beginning of the book has uniqueness compare to the other three books of the
gospel. The book of John begin with;
In the
beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the
beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him
nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the
darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
The beginning of the Bible, the Genesis begin with “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” , and soon after the words, God said, “Let
there be light,” and there was light. As you know, John clearly paid attention the Genesis. This world begin
with the words of God, the words was with God from the beginning. The things
happen when the words were addressed, and the words is God. The Words also has
life and the words is the light of the man, and the words shinning in the
darkness.
We admitted the wisdom of God when He set the Words as our foundation
from the beginning. If Christianity is based on our feelings about our
atmosphere, the Christianity must not exist right now. “Oh my gash, I have a chicken
pop” or “Oh my, I am feeling owe”, that kind of feeling is just appeal for a
while but it is just stay instant moment.
But if the words talk to our heart, the word appeal to our emotion as
well as our reason, and as a result, the words will be engraved in our heart
and we will get the guidance for our life by the words. These things have been took
place for 2000 years and because of that churches are still existing in all
over the world right now.
John is furthermore wrote about the word
of God like this; 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We
have seen his glory, the glory of
the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John wrote
amazing things here. The word became flesh, and the word dwells among us. What
is the meaning of this? Yes it is about Christmas, Jesus was born in this world
and he lived on this earth. John has seen his glory and the glory is not of our
world but it is the glory of God and he was filled with grace and truth.
By God sent
Christ on this earth, we can have the guidance of our life from Christ’s deeds
and words. We post his words on refrigerator, decorate on the fireplace. The
professional football player paints the words on his cheek and the president
lays his hand on the word and pledge. We face our problem in our life with the
words.
I
have many to talk about the words, but especially I want to focus one thing
that John mentioned in the book. Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him; 31 “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set
you free.”
Jesus
captured our interest here, because there is the word “free” here, and we react
the word, because the word is very attractive to us. Teenagers always yearning
the freedom and looking for the day of leaving the house. People who always go
to work on time and work extra hours and spent busy days really wishing their
own time, the time they can use freely for their own. Some people think marriage
and parenting is bondage and wants to free from it, and goes to unacceptable
way. Well, then what is the meaning of the freedom written in the Bible.
Let
us look at John 21. We see one of Christ disciple, Peter who once declared to
Jesus “I will follow you until death”. His words were so braved but he could
not follow the words and betrayed Jesus, but after Jesus resurrected, Peter met
him again and Jesus talked to Peter; 18 Very truly I tell you, when you were
younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old
you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you
where you do not want to go.” 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of
death by
which Peter would glorify God. Then he said
to him, “Follow me!”
Right
here, Jesus was talking about freedom, the freedom of Peter. Jesus talked to
Peter; when you were younger you dressed yourself and went
where you wanted; this is the life
style we are always looking for. We want to dress ourselves. Japanese Bible
said “Peter could bind belt on his waist”. The waist is our core of the body and
the source of our strength. The waist is very important to carry something or
even walking. So, the meaning of binding belt is we can manage freely our time
and plan by ourselves. That was the life style of Peter when he was young.
But
Jesus said it will not be like that from now. Jesus said someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.”
His life will not like before.
Brothers
and sisters, these words could apply our own life. As the words mentions, we used
live freely and could go wherever we wanted, but now we have more limits in our
life. When we are charged more responsibility for our family and work, our own
time will be used for it and we have to sacrifice ourselves.
And
also, when we are getting old, our freedom will be limited. We cannot go wherever
and whenever by ourselves anymore but someone take us when they are available.
We experience we used go there easily but now it is difficult to get there
because of our physical condition. These are what some of us experience every
day.
By
thinking this way, we understand the meaning of “someone else will dress you and lead you where you do
not want to go” in our life. In Peter’s case, he was actually binding and spent
days in prison, and finally he was crucified upside down and killed.
But
amazingly, Peter encouraged people in the letter of 1 Peter 2 16 Live
as free people, but do not use your
freedom as a cover-up for evil; live
as God’s slaves. The letter was written by Peter in AD 63, and that was the
time when the persecution for Christianity is getting strong. This
letter was written 30 years later after Jesus spoke to Peter whom I mentioned
today. Peter encouraged the people “Live as free people” in the situation of bondage.
This
is amazing Peters’ statement because Peter was already told he would lost his
freedom. “ Live as free people” this statement was based
on he is a really free person. He was not bluffing, but he really discovered the
freedom by following the words of Christ.
After
he states the encouragement, he also stated “you were like sheep
going astray, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls”. Yes Peter
found he thought he lives in the freedom when he was young but from God
perspective, that freedom was just like astray of sheep.
Young
people is always looking for their freedom and the time comes they acquire.
That is the day they are longing for. They start using their freedom right away
but they realize the freedom lead them to bondage.
As we looked at the Bible, we are getting realized
the freedom we are thinking in our world is different from the freedom which
defined in the Bible. The Book of John also mentioned about the difference.
31 To
the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my
teaching, you
are really my disciples. 32 Then
you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”33 They
answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been
slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell
you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no
permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36 So if the Son sets you
free, you
will be free indeed.
For
Christ, if we are the slave of our sins, we do not have any freedom but if we
are not the slave of our sins, we are free. Even though, we are bonding
physically, if we are not the slave of sins, we are free.
Let us return to Peter. Surely, his belt was binding
by people, and then didn’t he lose his freedom? He was in prison but he praises
the Lord in the prison. According to the legend about him, he was crucified
upside down and killed because he wished for.
Peter remained the words of Christ. He followed the
words of Christ. Surely he lost his ownership of binding belt, but he still had
true freedom in Christ. Seems like he lost his freedom but he was given the true
freedom by Jesus Christ.
Brothers and sisters, as I mentioned already, we
also lose our freedom, but it is not the meaning of losing true freedom. We
might not use our own time freely. We might not act as we are wishing, but our
spirit is always free in Christ. Therefore we can live our life as a free
people like Peter. We are always invited to the life of freedom. Let us pray.

３）ヨハネ２１章１８節－１９節を読みましょう。ここでイエス様はペテロに向かい、彼がどんな人生を送ることになるかということを話していますか。彼の若い時と、その晩年はどう違いますか。あなたもペテロと同じようなことを体験したことがありますか（していますか）。
４）キリストゆえに自由を失ったように見えるペテロですが、彼はペテロ第一の手紙２章１６節において『自由人にふさわしく行動しなさい。ただし、自由をば悪を行う口実として用いず、神の僕にふさわしく行動しなさい』と記しています。この言葉の前提はペテロ自身が自由人だということです。３）でペテロに語られたことを思います時に、なぜペテロは自由人になり得たのでしょうか。
