レビ記：迂回できなかった道

私達はここまで二回の日曜日をかけて創世記と出エジプト記を見てきました。そして、今日はレビ記となります。聖書６６巻の最後のヨハネ黙示録を登山の六十六合目とするならば、今日は三合目です。まだまだ先は長いのです。振り返れば、これまで歩んできました創世記、出エジプト記が眼下に見えます。
創世記では天地創造、初めの男と女、そこから増え広がった人間が神の定めた秩序を壊し始めたこと、神はそのような混沌とした世界でアブラハムという一人の人間と契約を結ばれ、彼の子孫は広がり、しかしながらアブラハム自身も、その子も、孫も諸々の家庭の問題に悩まされたということをお話しました。
そして、出エジプト記では、アブラハムの子孫がおびただしい数のイスラエル民族となり、エジプトで４００年もの間、奴隷となっていたこと、神様はそのような彼らを救い出し、後４０年間、彼らは荒野で過酷な生活をしますが、その一つ一つにも深い意味があったということをお話ししました。
その出エジプト記はエジプトのシナイ山のふもとで神様の細かな指示によって神が人と謁見する幕屋を建設、完成させたところで終ります。そして、続くレビ記は、この幕屋において神様がモーセに語りかけるところから始まり、実にその場での語りかけがレビ記の最後まで続くのです。そこで、まず皆さんにお聞きしたいのですが、皆さんの中でこのレビ記が好きだという方いますか。なぜこういうことを聞くかといいますと、創世記から出エジプト記と聖書通読をし、このレビ記にきて挫折してしまう人は多いからです。
たとえばレビ記１３章４７節以降にはこんなことが書かれているのです。
47また衣服に悪性のかびが生じた時は、それが羊毛の衣服であれ、亜麻の衣服であれ、48あるいは亜麻または羊毛の縦糸であれ、横糸であれ、あるいは皮であれ、皮で作ったどのような物であれ、49もしその衣服あるいは皮、あるいは縦糸、あるいは横糸、あるいは皮で作ったどのような物であれ、そのかびが青みをおびているか、赤みをおびているならば、それは悪性のかびの繁殖によるものであり、祭司に見せなければならない。
このようなところを読んで何かの教訓を得る人は少なく、「縦糸でも横糸でも、亜麻でも皮でも羊毛でも何でもいいじゃありませぬか、いちいち、かびを見つける度に祭司に見せるとはなんと面倒くさい！」と思うのは私だけではないはずです。このようなことが延々と書かれていますなら、やはり私達はこのレビ記を敬遠したくなるのが正直な気持ちです。私もこのレビ記からメッセージを毎週しているという牧師や特別集会でこのレビ記を主題にしている牧師に今まで出会ったことがありません。
しかし、この書も聖書全体の中の一書としてとらえるのならば、その書がなぜ、ここに記されているのかという意味がよく分かります。いいえ、それどころか結論から先に言いますと、このレビ記が分からないと、聖書がいうところの「神の聖さ」とか「イエス・キリストの十字架」の意味は分からないのです。さて、それでは早速、この「レビ記」という登山道を歩み始めましょう。
レビ記の特徴はその２７章中、実に２０章が「主はまたモーセに言われた」という言葉で始まっているということです。その神様の語りかけとは先ほども引用したような、イスラエルの民が守るべき犠牲や制度、衣食住にいたるまでの様々な律法、守るべき祝祭日、暦や祭儀について事細かにモーセに啓示されたものなのです。
なぜ、このようなことを神様はモーセに伝えたかといいますと、イスラエルの民をエジプトの苦役から解放し、彼らと契約を結ばれた神は彼らを「聖なる神の民」と宣言されたからなのです。それゆえに、「聖」という言葉がこの書の中には実に８４回も使われており、このレビ記の主題となる聖書箇所もレビ記１９章２節の「あなたがたの神、主なるわたしは聖であるから、あなたがたも聖でなければならない」ということになります。
なぜ彼らを聖なる民としたことにより、彼らが守るべき諸々の規定を示したかといいますと、彼らの周りに既にいた多くの異民族からイスラエルの民を区別し、その証となるために宗教的、道徳的、社会的に必要な他民族はもっていない様々な律法を彼らにお与えになったのです。この「聖なる神の民の区別」を実現すために記されたのが、このレビ記なのです。
私達がこのレビ記を見るにあたり、許されている時間はこの一回の礼拝しかありませんから、その内容の中で最重要なポイントだけを今日はお話します。この２７章あるレビ記はおおまかに分けて二つに分けられます。すなわち１章から１０章までの「罪ある人間が聖なる神に近づく方法」、そして１１章から２７章までの「罪ある人間が聖なる神と共に歩む方法」ということです。今日はこの二つのポイントをお話しましょう。
罪ある人間が聖なる神に近づく方法（１章‐１０章）
さて、レビ記がまず取り上げていることは、罪というものをもつ人間がどうしたら聖なる神に近づくことができるのかということです。私達は出エジプト記において、神様が民に「幕屋」を造らせたことを見ましたが、その幕屋建設に対する神様の指示は材料の選別から、その大きさや構造にいたるまで、さらにはその幕屋において神と謁見することが許されていた祭司の服装にいたるまで全て、そう本当に全て人間の意見が全く入る余地がなく、まさしくインチの長さにいたるまで、ことごとく神様から示されたものでした。それは私達には気の遠くなるようなことでありました。なぜ、このようなことを神様がなされたか皆さんは不思議に思いませんか。
その理由は罪ある者が神に近づくためには、「神の方法」によらねばならないことを民に徹底的に教えるためでした。こうしたらもっと効率的で、手間暇が省けるのにとかという人間の思いが介入することはなく、寸分違わずに神様が言われた通りに黙々と材料を切り出し、黙々と木を削ることにより、彼らは罪ある者の側（がわ）に神に近づく方法は全くないということを心に刻みこんだのです。このことが分かると、この難解なレビ記にパッと光が照らします。
これが世の多くの神々に対する人間の姿勢とこの聖書に記されている神との大きな違いです。世の多くの宗教は私達の日々の行いと精進、修行、もっとえげつないものになるとどれだけお布施をしたかによって、神に喜ばれ、受け入れられ、神に近づくことができると言うのです。しかし、冷静に考えます時に分かりますことは、神様とは「スポーツチームの監督」ではなく、「お米品評会の審査員」でもなく、「切符を売っている売り子さん」ではないのです。神が神たるゆえんは、その存在が人間には圧倒的であり、本来、罪ある人間がその前に立ちうることなどできないということなのです。
そこで、神の側からレビ記４章において「罪祭と呼ばれる罪のためのいけにえ」と５章には「けん祭と呼ばれる罪過のためのいけにえ」をその自らの罪の赦しのために捧げるようにと、これまた人が全く口をだす余地もないほどに事細かに示されたのです。「罪のためのいけにえ」とは、意識的ではなく無意識に犯してしまった罪に対して人間が動物を捧げることであり、「罪過のためのいけにえ」とは自覚的な罪、行為の罪の赦しのための同じく動物の命を捧げるものでありました。

聖書はその罪によって私達が引き起こす深刻な事態を書き記し、それがどれだけ深刻なものであるかということを、何によってその罪が赦されるかということによって表わしています。すなわち、このレビ記の時代、動物の血が流されることによって私達の罪は赦され、そのために流されたおびただしい量の血が人の罪の深刻さをあらわしているのです。
ヘブル９章２２節には「血を流すことなしに罪の赦しはありえない」とあります。それはちょっと指先を切って血を流せばいいということではないのです。レビ記は１７章１４節に「すべて肉の命は、その血を一つだからである」と書いていますが、それは私達の命はイコール私達の血なのだということを意味しているのです。言うまでもなく血がなければ私達は確実に死にます。あるべき量の血が私達の体内には常になければ生きることはできません。そのような意味で「血」は「命そのもの」なのです。
ローマ６章２０節-２１節にはこのように記されています。20あなたがたが罪の僕であった時は、義とは縁のない者であった。21その時あなたがたは、どんな実を結んだのか。それは、今では恥とするようなものであった。それらのものの終極は、死である。
イスラエルの民は動物の血が流されるのを見、すなわち自分の罪が赦されるために動物の命が失われる様を見ることにより、彼らは罪というものは確実に死にいたるものなのだということを心に刻みながら生きたのです。そして、彼らはレビ記に記されている規定によりそれから実に１５００年もの間、自らの罪のために動物を捧げ続けます。この動物を祭司が受け取り、それを殺し、民に変わって罪の贖いをなし続けました。そのような意味でエルサレムの神殿はまさしくおびただしい数の動物の血に塗られた場所であります。
このようなことを１５００年続けて、分かったことが一つありました。いや、分かったというよりも実証されたということになりましょう。そのことをヘブル書１０章は簡潔に記しています。いったい、律法はきたるべき良いことの影をやどすにすぎず、そのものの真のかたちをそなえているものではないから、年ごとに引きつづきささげられる同じようないけにえによっても、みまえに近づいて来る者たちを、全うすることはできないのである。2もしできたとすれば、儀式にたずさわる者たちは、一度きよめられた以上、もはや罪の自覚がなくなるのであるから、ささげ物をすることがやんだはずではあるまいか。3しかし実際は、年ごとに、いけにえによって罪の思い出がよみがえって来るのである。4なぜなら、雄牛ややぎなどの血は、罪を除き去ることができないからである。（ヘブル１０章１節‐２５節）
神様は動物をもって罪が赦される道を示したのです。しかし、そのことによって人の本質が明らかになりました。それはたとえ人が自分の罪の供え物として動物を捧げたとしても、その罪の自覚がなくなるどころか、年ごとにその生け贄が自分の罪の思い出を思い起こさせるということだったのです。すなわち、雄牛ややぎの血では人の罪をのぞき去ることはできないということだったのです。それではこのような人間の行き詰まりに対して神様は何をなさったのでしょうか。
このヘブル書１０章は「律法はきたるべき良いことの影にすぎない」（１）と記しています。すなわち、これらレビ記に記された諸々の律法というものは、後にきたるべきものを指す影にすぎなかったのです。このことをガラテヤ３章２３節はこう記しています。「しかし、信仰が現れる前には、わたしたちは律法の下で監視されており、やがて啓示される信仰の時まで閉じ込められていた。このようにして律法は、信仰によって義とされるために、わたしたちをキリストに連れて行く養育係となったのである。しかし、いったん信仰が現れた以上、わたしたちは、もはや養育係のもとにはいない。あなたがたはみな、キリスト・イエスにある信仰によって、神の子なのである」。
今日のメッセージタイトルは「迂回できなかった道」となっています。神様がまず人に動物の犠牲を捧げるという律法を与えたことは、やがてくる良いことの影となり、その律法はイエス・キリストのもとに私達を連れて行く必要不可欠な養育係だったというのです。まさしく、そのような意味でこの１５００年の間にイスラエルの民達がなし続けたことは、キリストのもとに導くためのものであり、それは迂回できない道程だったのです。
ヘブル１０章１２節以降がこのキリストについて記しているとおりです。12しかるに、キリストは多くの罪のために一つの永遠のいけにえをささげた後、神の右に座し、13それから、敵をその足台とするときまで、待っておられる。14彼は一つのささげ物によって、きよめられた者たちを永遠に全うされたのである。
すなわち、キリストが私達の罪のために一度限り、十字架において血を流し、その命を捧げてくださったことにより、私達の罪は赦されるという聖書がいうところの最重要な私達への約束です。このことにより神はもはや「彼らの罪と彼らの不法とを、思い出すことはしない」（ヘブル１０章１７節）と記されており、「これらのことに対するゆるしがある以上、罪のためのささげ物は、もはやあり得ない」（ヘブル10章18節）と約束されています。
同志社大学の創立者であり、またその校長でもあったクリスチャンの新島襄は、その在職中、学生問題で大きな困難に見舞われたことがありました。問題を起こした学生たちは新島の前に立っても、ふてぶてしい態度でした。新島はその学生たちに向かって、「どの学校にもルールはある。ルールを破ったからには学則に従って罰しなければならない」と言って、そこにあった杖を取り上げ、激しく、ビシッ、ビシッとたたき始めました。
新島は何をたたいたのでしょうか。彼がたたいたのは自分の左手でした。見る見るうちに手ははれ上がり、血がにじみ出ました。しかし、やめることなく、たたき続けました。彼の手は真っ赤になり、ついにたたき続けていたつえは折れてしまいました。この時、学生の一人が「先生、やめてください、わたしたちが悪かったのです。許してください」と叫んだのです。彼らは新島の愛に触れたのです。新島はしてしまった生徒の過ちに対する義をとおし、同時に生徒に対する愛を示しました。
キリストはその命を私達の罪のために捧げてくださいました。動物は自分が殺されることが人の罪のためだとは露だに思わなかったことでしょう。しかし、イエス様は自ら私達が本来受けるべき罪に対する罰の身代わりとなることをよしとし、そのキリストの身代わりによって私達は赦されたのです。そこに神の私達に対する愛があるのです。
二つ目のことをお話ししましょう。それは「聖なる神と共に歩む者」がどのような生活をするべきなのかということです。
聖なる神と共に歩む者（１１章－２７章）
先にもお話ししましたように、このレビ記の鍵の言葉は「聖」であります。この「聖」とは神の本質を表わすものです。そして、神が聖であるということは、それ以外の全ての被造物とはご自身が全く異なる存在であることを示しています。それは言葉の概念や理解を超越したものであり、そこには私達には理解できない非合理的なこと、非日常的なものを有し、表現できない神秘が隠されています。
その神様が「あなたがたの神、主であるわたしが聖であるから、あなたがたも聖なる者とならなければならない」（１９章２節）とイスラエルの民に命じておられ、先にお話ししたように動物の犠牲によって、その罪が赦された者達に対して神様は彼らをこの世において区別された存在として生きる独自的な生活様式を要求されたのです。それゆえに、そのために神は彼らの衣食住にいたるまで、細かな規定をお与えになったのです。
人類史上、ユダヤ人ほど不思議に満ちた民族はいません。彼らの歴史は迫害に次ぐ迫害の歴史であり、彼らは世界各地に離散した民族でありましたが、今日、なお彼らは自らの言語や文化を保持しています。常識的に考えたら世界中に散り散りになった民族はその土地の文化に同化していき、同時に先祖の文化を失っていくものです。しかし、彼らはそれを今日も保っています。その理由は神様がシナイ山のふもとで彼らの先祖に与えた細かな徹底した律法が何千年もかけて、まさしく彼らのDNAに刻まれるかのごとく、その生活様式を導いたからなのでしょう。
彼らは紀元前１０２０年イスラエル王国を建国し、王国分裂後の紀元前５８６年に国を失いました。そして、それから約２６００年後の１９４８年５月１４日にかつてのイスラエル王国と同じ場所に再び建国されました。その時にかつて彼らの先祖が使っていた古代ヘブル語が復元され、今日のヘブル語になりました。あえて言うまでもなく、このように数千年の年月を経て国や言葉が再び回復されたということは人類史の中にイスラエル以外にはありません。このようなことは彼らが離散した国々でも守り続けた、このレビ記に記されているような律法なくしてはありえなかったことでしょう。このようなことをモーセもレビ記が記された時代の人達も考えもしなかったことでしょう。皆さん、神様のなさることを小さくとらえてはなりません、常にそれを大きな視点でとらえましょう。同じように私達の人生もバイブルという眼鏡を用いて、このような視点でながめようではありませんか。
しかしながら今日、キリストの十字架の後を生きる私達が神の子として生きる生活に、もはや、このレビ記に記されている諸々の規定はありません。そこにはきよい食べ物、きよくない食べ物というものはありません。もちろん、動物を捧げるというようなことも必要ありません。これらは全て私達をキリストに導くための養育係だったからです。コリント第二の手紙３章１７節が「主は霊である。そして、主の霊のあるところには、自由がある」と記しているように私達には自由があります。しかし、それは自分の欲望のおもむくままの自由ではありません。ペテロ第一の手紙２章一六節が「自由人にふさわしく行動しなさい。ただし、自由をば悪を行う口実として用いず、神の僕にふさわしく行動しなさい」と示していますように、イエスの十字架の愛によって罪赦された自由であるゆえに、神の僕にふさわしく生きるという自由です。
かつては大祭司だけが民の代表として幕屋の奥の至聖所に入り、神への贖いの供え物を捧げていました。しかし、今は違います。ヘブル１０章１９節以降が記しています。19兄弟たちよ。こういうわけで、わたしたちはイエスの血によって、はばかることなく聖所にはいることができ、20彼の肉体なる幕をとおり、わたしたちのために開いて下さった新しい生きた道をとおって、はいって行くことができるのであり、21さらに、神の家を治める大いなる祭司があるのだから、22心はすすがれて良心のとがめを去り、からだは清い水で洗われ、まごころをもって信仰の確信に満たされつつ、みまえに近づこうではないか。23また、約束をして下さったのは忠実なかたであるから、わたしたちの告白する望みを、動くことなくしっかりと持ち続け、24愛と善行とを励むように互に努め、25ある人たちがいつもしているように、集会をやめることはしないで互に励まし、かの日が近づいているのを見て、ますます、そうしようではないか。
もはや現代、牧師が動物の生け贄をもって皆さんの罪の赦しのために至聖所に入る必要はないのです。イエスが私達のために流してくださった血により、私達自身がはばかることなく聖所にはいることができるのです。このキリストの血は私達の良心のとがめをなくしてくださるのです。それゆえに、私達は動かされることなく、このことをしっかりと持ち続け、主と共に喜びをもって日々の生活に励むのです。
正直、申しますと「レビ記」を一回で話すということはやはり大変です。しかしながら、少しお分かりになったでしょうか。先に言いましたように、このレビ記が分からないと、「神の聖さ」とか「イエス・キリストの十字架」の意味は本当には分からないということが。何度も申していますように、神の人に対する救いの計画の周到さがお分かりになったでしょうか。レビ記に記されている事細かな律法は、その神のご計画の中で後のキリストの十字架にいたるために、まさしく「迂回できないこと」であったということが。私達はただ神様のその偉大さの前に、そしてその人知では到底はかり知れないご愛の前にただひれ伏すだけなのです。この神様と共にこの生涯を生きることができる幸いを何に変えることができましょうか。お祈りしましょう。
The way we must go through

We studied Genesis and Exodus the last two Sundays so far. And today, we are opening up “Leviticus”. Imagine, the Bible is just as a mountain. If we set up “Revelation” as sixty sixth stage of ‘Mountain “Bible.” Today, we are at the third stage of our Bible Mountain. It looks a long, long way to climb up yet. Looking back, we see our footprints on the stage of “Genesis” and “Exodus” below.
In Genesis, I started talking of “the Creation”, first man and woman, “Adam and Eve”. Man began to multiply on the face of the earth from Adam and Eve. Then people started ignoring and breaking God’s order. In that chaos, God appeared to Abram to make his covenant between the Lord and Abram. (Since then Abram is called Abraham.) God promised Abraham that his descendants will multiply as number as stars in the sky. However, Abraham himself, even as promised to man, he could not avoid his own family problems so did his son’s family and grand son’s
In Exodus, I talked about the numberless descendants of Abraham, so called Israelites, had become slaves for over four hundred years in Egypt. God delivered them out of the land of Egypt. After they left Egypt, they kept traveling in the terrible wilderness for forty years. Even in those harsh experiences, that they had been through, each one of them was under God’s Providence.
The book of Exodus ends with the completion of the tabernacle for worship given the detail by God at the foot of mount. Sinai. Continued to Leviticus, Leviticus starts from God’s calling to Moses in the tabernacle, and it keeps going on till the end of the book of Leviticus.
Now, I would like to ask you, sisters and brothers, is there anybody who likes Leviticus? The reason why I asked you this question is because many Christians, who tried reading from the beginning to the end of the bible, throw up their hands at the book of Leviticus after Exodus.
In Leviticus from chapter thirteen verse 47, for example,
47”Also, if a garment has a leprous plague in it, whether it is a woolen garment or a linen garment,48”whether it is in the warp or woof of linen or wool, whether in leather or in anything made of leather,49”and if the plague is greenish or reddish in the garment or in the leather, whether in the warp or in the woof, or in anything made of leather, it is a leprous plague and shall be shown to the priest.
I don’t believe that people would learn any lessons from these verses.
“What is the matter of the warp or woof, I don’t care about linen, leather, or wool, whatever, what trouble to bring to the priest each time when I find a leprous plague in one of those garments. “, I am not only one to think like that, I guess.
Because of these types of verses all over in Leviticus, this book of Leviticus would be the last book to read in the Bible, to be honest. I have not either met any pastor who prepares messages from Leviticus every week, nor uses scriptures from the book of Leviticus as the main theme in any retreat.
However, if we see this book in the whole picture of the Bible, we can tell why this book, Leviticus should be there after Exodus. Furthermore, if I say the bottom line first, if you don’t grasp the gist of Leviticus, you’ll never be able to understand “Holiness of God” or “God’s love, Jesus Christ on the cross”. Well, let’s start climbing up a mountain trail of the book of Leviticus.
Leviticus is characterized by a phrase, starting from “God spoke to Moses” in twenty chapters out of twenty seven chapters in this book of Leviticus. What God spoke to Moses? Just as I quoted, many social and religious regulations for everyday issues of life (such as food, animals, childbirth, disease, clothes, and bodily functions), and structured and regulated set of sacrifices and feasts are to be observed in minute detail.
Why God gave such instructions is because God, delivered the Israelites from Egyptian harsh bondage, and made the Covenant with Israelite, pronounced Israelite as “God’s people”. That is because why the word, “holiness” is used eighty four times in this book of Leviticus. And, the main verse of Leviticus is Chapter nineteen verse two; “Speak to all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say to them: You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy.”
The reason why God gave many instructions in minute detail that are to be obeyed is to impress upon the people the differences between what is holy – or “clean” – and what is unholy – or “unclean” So that the God’s people, Israelite could be separated from gentiles. This is the book of Leviticus to clear holy God’s people from gentiles
We only have this morning to look into the whole “Leviticus” in our bible mountain climbing schedule. So I focus on the most important point in this book. We can divide this book mainly into two parts. First part, from chapter one to chapter ten, “how ‘sinners’ could have personal access to holy God”. Then, from chapter eleven through chapter twenty seven, “how sinners could make themselves spiritually acceptable to God. Today, I talk about these two points.
How sinners could have personal access to holy God
First subject in Leviticus is; how sinners could have personal access to Holy God. In Exodus, we read that God made the Israelites construct “the tabernacle” We read how detail God’s instructions were; such as selection of materials, the sizes, the design, and furthermore, the length of gown of priests who were allowed to go into the tabernacle to worship God. Those minute instructions were no room for manly opinion at all. That sounded so far away to be able to do for us. Don’t you wonder why God gave them those instructions?
The reason is; “to teach the people thoroughly, there is not any other way but God’s way “ for the sinners to have personal access to holy God. There is no other space to insert man’s idea like, “If doing that way, it will be more efficient, can skip some, or save more time.” The people as sinners, had been imprinted, “there is no way for sinners to have personal access to holy God” from sinner’s side, by cutting trees minutely and whittling them entirely just exactly the same as God commanded. If you got it, you can switch on the head light to focus on the Leviticus trail.
This is a huge difference between man’s attitude towards a lot of kind of gods in pagan culture and “the God” in the Bible. Many religions of this world around us teach that we are measured by our worship by our daily good behavior, training ourselves to be getting better, or even by how much money we donate, to be accepted and to get closer to gods. However, when we consider our God, we know that; God is not just ”a sports team coach”, not just “a one of judge of some Rice Fair”, nor just “a sales person of a ticket counter”. God is God and just because of that, nobody with sin can stand before HIM. His existence overwhelms man.
Therefore, from God side, they were instructed the offering for their forgiveness of sins in minutely without any space for manly thought. God taught them in chapter four, “the sacrifice of unintentional sins, called as the sin offering”, and in chapter five, “the sacrifice of trespass sins called as a trespass offering.” The sacrifice of unintentional sins is to offer the sacrifice for unintentional sins. And the sacrifice of trespass sins is to offer the sacrifice for intentional sins.
Our human problems have always been caused by all of our sins deep in our mind. We have a law to stop drivers who ignore the red light. We have the ministry of justice. However, “the mindset that cannot help crossing with knowing ‘red light’ is our sin of problem deep inside our mind. There is no authority to handle with the sinful mind itself in any country. We are just screaming to see horrible news day and night all over the world, caused by our sins from deep inside our mind.
The Bible revealed our serious problems caused by our sin in our mind. The Bible shows us how serious our sins are, and how we could be forgiven from our sins.
In the time of Leviticus, they were forgiven by pouring the sacrificed animal’s blood. A copious amount of animal blood shows us how serious man’s sins were.
In Hebrew chapter nine verse twenty two; ”Without shedding of blood there is no remission” The meaning of this verse is not just to cut our fingertip to shed our blood. In Leviticus, chapter seventeen verse fourteen; “For it is the life of all flesh. Its blood sustains its life” That means; our life equal blood itself. Needless to say, without blood, we absolutely die. We cannot survive without a certain amount of blood in our body. In this sense, “blood” is life itself.
In Roman, chapter six verse twenty and twenty one; 20 For whem you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness 21 What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things in death
Israelites have been retaining in their heart that sins end up to death by reminding of a visual impression of blood of the sacrificed animal. Israelites had been shedding animal blood for covering their sins over a thousand five hundred years since the time of Leviticus. The ordinated priest had been killing the sacrifices and pouring out their blood for offering to be forgiven for the Israelites. In this meaning, the tabernacle in Jerusalem was a bloody place covered by blood of numerous animals.
One thing that they figured out, or more for, proved after they had continued those offering for one thousand five hundred years; we can see that briefly in Hebrew chapter ten; 1 For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect.2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? For the worshipers, once purified, would have had no more consciousness of sins.3 But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year.4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.
God instructed us how to be forgiven by the offering of the sacrificed animals. But, with this way, it was also revealed “sin” of human nature. That is about; even no matter how much they offered blood of bulls and goats continually, year by year, the worshipers would have had more consciousness of sins. Because those sacrifices were reminders of sins every year; that means it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins. So, then, what did God do for the Israelites who got stuck with their sins.
This Hebrew chapter ten says; “For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come”. It means; the book of Leviticus implies the “good things to come” in various detail laws as a shadow of “good things” to come. Like in Galatians, chapter three from verse twenty three to twenty six;23 But before faith come, we were kept under guard by the law, kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed.24 Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
Today’s message title is “the way they must have gone through”. First, God gave the people the law to instruct offerings of sacrificed animals. That became a shadow of “the good things to come”, the Lamb, Jesus Christ. The law was an absolute tutor to bring them to “Jesus Christ”. Certainly, that is what Israelite had been offering the sacrifices of animals for a thousand five hundred years were for bringing them to Jesus Christ, and that was the way they must had been going through.
Just as in Hebrew, from chapter ten, verse twelve says; 12 But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God, 13 from that time waiting till His enemies are made His footstool. 14 For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.
These scriptures of the Hebrew tell us the most significant God’s promise to us; that our sins are forgiven, because Jesus Christ was bleeding on the cross to offer his life as only a onetime sacrifice of all of our sins. For that, God said in Hebrew chapter ten verse seventeen; “then He adds, “Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” God also promised in Hebrew chapter ten verse eighteen, ”Now where there is remission of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.”
A founder and a principal of a Christian College in Kyoto, “Doshisha University”, ‘Dr. Jo Nijima, was a Christian. During his time as a principal, he faced a big and difficult student’s problem. The students caused problem were so impudent even before Nijima. Nijima told those students that “any school has school Regulations, and since you broke it, you will be punished by the regulation.” Then, Nijima started hitting violently, “ Bang! Bang! Bang!”, with a stick there.
What did Nijima hit by the stick? He was hitting on his own left hand. His hand started swelling up in a moment, bleeding in his skin. His hand became stained in red. He had not stopped hitting himself on his hand till the stick was broken. At that time, one of students cried out “ Principal, stop it please, we were wrong. Please forgive us.” They were touched by the love of Nijima. Nijima showed that they must adhere to the righteousness and also showed his love to his students at the same time.
Jesus gave us his life to redeem our sins. I don’t think those animals knew that they were killed to cover man’s sin. However, Lord Jesus came to on earth to die for us by his own pure blood of sacrifice. Therefore, we were forgiven not by the sacrifice of animals, but by the sacrifice of the Lamb without blemish, Jesus Christ, himself. We can see the Love of God in it. Let’s talk about second point, about how to live “as a man, having spiritual access to holy God.”
Man to have spiritual access to holy God( chapter 11-27)
As I mentioned in the first part, key word of Leviticus is “holiness”. This “holiness” stands for “God” himself. And what God is holy means that God is completely different from any other creations. This concept is beyond word or our understanding. Inexpressible mystery is hidden, that is irrational, extraordinary thing.
The Lord commanded the Israelite “You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy.”, (chapter nineteen verse two). The Lord required the people, who were forgiven by the sacrifice of animals, to follow exacting standards for living as God’s people separated from this world. That is why the Lord gave minute regulations of their everyday issues of life such as clothes, food, housing and so on.
In the history of mankind, there is no other mysterious peoples like the Israelite. Their history is of suffering from one persecution to another persecution for many many years. The Israelites were spirited away all over the world over thousands years ago. However, they still keep their own language and their own specific style of life. Normally, if peoples were spirited away from their own countries to another ethnic lands, they tended to assimilate into their style of life, and lost their original style. But, the Israelites keep their own style even today. I think it’s because that the very exact laws in minute, given to their ancestors by the Lord at Mount. Sinai, have been imprinted and have been leading them for thousands of years.
The Israelites established the kingdom of Israel in B.C.1020. After they divided into two countries, they totally lost their own country in B.C.586. Then, about two thousands six hundred years later since their lost country, they reestablished their own country again Israel, at the same place in 1948, May 14. When they reestablished Israel, they also restored ancient Hebrew to today’s Hebrew. Needless to say, there is no other peoples like the Israelites who reestablished their own country at the original place and restored their language in the history of mankind. It wouldn’t be possible without the law like in Leviticus, that they have been keeping even after they were forced to survive with gentiles. I don’t think (that) even Moses didn’t imagine that nor did the people of the time of Leviticus. Everyone, ( brothers and sisters,), we must not put God’s work to our limited picture frame. Let’s try to reach to God’s view point to put God’s work to God’s unlimited picture frame. Just as like this, let’s start watching our own life with viewpoints of Bible.
However, today, we don’t have instructions like in Leviticus, who live as Christian after Jesus Christ on the cross. We don’t need to worry about food, to think, what is clean and what is unclean. Of course, we don’t need to offer the sacrifice of animals for our sins. All of these were a tutor to bring us to Jesus Christ. In Second Corinthians chapter three verse seventeen, Paul said, “the Lord is Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”, so we have “liberty.” But, this is not “liberty” that allows us our flesh desire. First Peter chapter two, verse sixteen teaches us “as free, yet not using liberty as a cloak for vice, but as bondservants of God”. So that, the liberty of redemption by the love of God, showed by Christ Jesus on the cross, is a liberty to live as a servant of God.
Only high priests used to be able to go alone into the Most Holy Place of the tabernacle, performing the services for the people’s sins. However, not now, anymore, after Jesus Christ. From chapter ten verse nineteen in Hebrew, the Bible says;
19 Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus ,
20 by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, 21 and having a High Priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works. 25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.
Today, I, as a pastor, no longer need to go into the Most Holy Place of the tabernacle with a blood of animals for your sins. Each one of us can go into the Holy Place of spiritual tabernacle with the blood of High Priest, Jesus Christ. This blood of Jesus Christ can wash our condemnations away.
Therefore, we must keep this truth in our mind, and stand firm on it. So that we can walk with our Lord each single day and moment with JOY.
To be totally honest with you, it is so hard to talk about the book of Leviticus at one time. Did you understand the motif of this book of Leviticus even a little??, I hope. As I mentioned before, if you don’t understand “Leviticus”, you won’t be able to get the true meaning of “Holiness of God” and “Jesus Christ on the Cross.”
As I keep telling you, did you understand the perfect planning of God for our salvation? The minute laws in Leviticus were the way “they had to have gone through” to bring us Jesus Christ on the Cross in God’s plan. We only can humble ourselves, before God, the greatest God, and God’s love that surpasses all understanding. For what can we trade this grace of walking with our Lord through our life. Let’s Pray.
