ダビデはまだ見ていない自分の人生について『わたしの生きているかぎりは必ず恵みといつくしみとが伴うでしょう。わたしはとこしえに主の宮に住むでしょう』とここに書き記しました。それは確信に満ちた言葉でした。この時、ダビデは彼のその先の人生について心の中でイメージをしていたに違いありません。では、そのイメージはどこからきたのでしょうか。その確信はどこからきたのでしょううか。そう、それはそれまでの彼の歩みです。彼の過去の記憶です。

主の前に静まる理由

ここまでダビデの書きました詩篇２３篇を見てまいりましたが、それも今日で終わりとなります。来週は敬老会ですので本多一米牧師が礼拝メッセージをお話しします。そして、今月の２５日から新しいメッセージシリーズを準備しています。
イスラエル二代目の王、ダビデはその若き時に実際に羊飼いとして生き、その人生経験から神の前にある一人の人としてこの２３篇を書きました。おそらく彼はこの２３篇をその晩年に書きましたので、この詩は彼が自分の人生を振りかえって得た人生の総括だったと思われます。
1主はわたしの牧者であって、わたしには乏しいことがない。2主はわたしを緑の牧場に伏させ、いこいのみぎわに伴われる。3主はわたしの魂をいきかえらせ、み名のためにわたしを正しい道に導かれる。4たといわたしは死の陰の谷を歩むとも、わざわいを恐れません。あなたがわたしと共におられるからです。あなたのむちと、あなたのつえはわたしを慰めます。5あなたはわたしの敵の前で、わたしの前に宴を設け、わたしのこうべに油をそそがれる。わたしの杯はあふれます。6わたしの生きているかぎりは必ず恵みといつくしみとが伴うでしょう。わたしはとこしえに主の宮に住むでしょう。
ここまでにもお話ししましたように、ダビデは苦労を経験したことがないような人ではなく、その生涯には多くの労苦や試練がありました。親兄弟からとりたてて注目も期待もされずに育ち、しかし、神に油を注がれることにより彼はイスラエルの王となりました。お話ししていますようにダビデはイスラエルで最も真実に神に仕えた偉大な王でしたが、取り返しのつかないような失敗や、また人間的な弱さも抱えていました。彼が日々、向き合った試練は数多く、命さえ狙われるような危機を幾度もとおりました。その彼が自分の試練や失敗や弱点を全てふまえてこの詩篇２３篇を作ったところにこの詩の大きな意味があります。
親兄弟からあまり目も留められずに、乏しさとか、寂しさというものを体験していた日々を思い、幼い時の故郷ベツレヘムの野原に寝そべる羊を思い起こしつつ、ダビデは歌いました。1主はわたしの牧者であって、わたしには乏しいことがない。2主はわたしを緑の牧場に伏させ、いこいのみぎわに伴われる。
あのバテシバとの出来事や欲心が起きて神に頼らずに自分がもっている兵士の数に寄り頼むという失敗を犯した彼は歌いました。3主はわたしの魂をいきかえらせ、み名のためにわたしを正しい道に導かれる。
そう、彼は命からがら主君サウロや我が子アブシャロムから命を狙われるようなところを通りながらも、歌ったのです。4たといわたしは死の陰の谷を歩むとも、わざわいを恐れません。あなたがわたしと共におられるからです。
彼は自らの過ちに対して、自分が蒔いたものを刈り取らなければならなくなりました。そうです、彼は主からのムチを受けました。しかし、そのムチは神が自分を私生子ではなく、我が子として取り扱ってくれていることなのだと悟ったのでしょう。ですから彼は書いたのです。あなたのむちと、あなたのつえはわたしを慰めます。
彼が行く先々、隙あらば彼の命を狙う者達に追われているような時、神様は彼に必要な食事を与えました。このような日々を過ごした彼は言うのです。5あなたはわたしの敵の前で、わたしの前に宴を設け、わたしのこうべに油をそそがれる。わたしの杯はあふれます。
ここまでの事はダビデが自分の人生に起きたことを振り返り、その思いを書き記したものです。しかし、その詩篇２３篇の一番最後に彼はこれからの事、すなわち未だ起きていないことについて書いたのです。6わたしの生きているかぎりは必ず恵みといつくしみとが伴うでしょう。わたしはとこしえに主の宮に住むでしょう。

ロッククライミングというスポーツがあります。断崖絶壁をロープだけを頼りに登るスポーツです。おそらく私はこのスポーツには関わらないだろうと断言できるスポーツです。写真を見ているだけで足が震えます。
彼らはどうやってこのような崖を登ることが出来るのでしょうか。彼らを支えるロープはどこにつながっているのでしょうか。実は「ハーケン」というものがあり、クライマーは岩にそのハーケンを打ち込みながら、壁をよじのぼるのです。ですからその登頂には時間がかかります。いい加減にハーケンを打ち込んでいるのなら、命の危険がありますから、彼らは念入りに岩深く、このハーケンを打ち込みます。そして、そのハーケンに命綱をつけながら上を目指し、山頂に達するのです。その時です、彼が自分がのぼってきたルートを見ますと、そこにいは自分が打ち込んできたハーケンが並んでいるのです。
私達の人生にもハーケンがあります。神の恵み深さを体験した時、その体験は人生のハーケンとなります。聞かれた祈り、信仰による勝利、神の臨在によって艱難を乗り越えた体験など、全てがハーケンとなります。
私達はあまりそんなことを考えませんが、今、私達がここにいるということは、あの時は万事休すと思えるような過去の苦難や試練を乗り越えて、今ここにあるということです。そう、そんな時のハーケンを私達はあそこにも、ここにも見つけるのです。
ダビデが自分の人生を振り返った時に、すなわち自分の人生の節目節目のこのハーケンを見出しました時に、ダビデはそのハーケンを彼のために打ち込まれた主の頼もしい御手を思い起こしたのでしょう。ですから、それらの一つ一つのハーケンを振り返りました時に、彼の口からは賛美が生まれたのです。そうです、その賛美が『わたしの生きているかぎりは必ず恵みといつくしみとが伴うでしょう。わたしはとこしえに主の宮に住むでしょう』（６）という言葉なのです。
まだ自分の旅は終わらない。まだ自分の前には登るべき壁があるけれど、主はこれまでそうであったように、これからも確固たるハーケンをもって私を高嶺に導いてくださるということを。これまでの導きに思いをよせる時に彼の心に神は私の将来をも導かれる、その恵みといつくしみが私を追いかけてくる、それが彼のこの言葉なのです。そして、その確信はこの地上での生活を超えて、永久まで私は主の宮に住むだろうという確信へといたったのです。
先々週、私達は神の恵みに自ら気がつくことがとても大切だとお話ししました。「はぁ、なるほど、気がつくことが大切なんだ。それがなければ何も起こらないんだ」と思われた方達がいるかもしれません。
その時は「この気がつく」ということを、それではどのようにしたらそのことが可能になるのかという、実際的なことはお話ししませんでした。しかし、このことこそが最も大切なことですので、今日はそのことをお話しします。
初めに申し上げますが、この「気がつく」ということは閃き（ひらめき）によって私達のもとにやってくるものではありません。その気づきが与えられるために私達がなさなければならないことがあるのです。この詩篇２３篇もダビデのひらめきから生まれたものではないのです。それならダビデはどのようにしてこの詩篇２３篇の言葉を獲得したのでしょうか。
ここが今日の最も大切なポイントです。ここがこれからの私達の人生の分かれ道となるポイントです。人生の晩年に私達もダビデと同じように私達の詩篇２３篇を神に捧げることが出来るか否か、その分かれ道です。それは何でしょうか。それは「私達が主の前に一人、出ているかどうか」ということです。どれだけ私達が一人、主の前に静まって、主の御声に耳を傾けているかです。
ダビデはそんなことをしていたのですかと思われる方がいるかもしれません。お話ししましょう。私達はあちこちにそんなダビデの姿を私達は聖書の中に見出すことができるのです。ダビデが書きました詩篇１４３篇を読みます。
1主よ、わが祈を聞き、わが願いに耳を傾けてください。あなたの真実と、あなたの正義とをもって、わたしにお答えください。2あなたのしもべのさばきにたずさわらないでください。生ける者はひとりもみ前に義とされないからです。3敵はわたしをせめ、わがいのちを地に踏みにじり、死んで久しく時を経た者のようにわたしを暗い所に住まわせました。4それゆえ、わが霊はわがうちに消えうせようとし、わが心はわがうちに荒れさびれています。5わたしはいにしえの日を思い出し、あなたが行われたすべての事を考え、あなたのみ手のわざを思います。（詩篇１４３篇１節―５節）
この時、ダビデは敵に責められ、命が踏みにじられるような所にいました。そのような時にダビデは何をしたのでしょうか。そうです、彼は「わたしはいにしえの日を思い出し、あなたが行われたすべての事を考え、あなたの見てのわざを思います」と書いています。すなわち、彼はその状況の中で主の前に静まり、自分の状況と自分自身を吟味して、そのありのままの状況を神の前に差し出しています。そして、主がこれまで自分になしてくださったことを考え、そのみ手ののわざを思い起こしているのです。そう、彼は主の前に静まり、考え、思うのです。それは閃きではなく、彼は一定の時間をこのために割き、一人、静かにこの時を過ごしたのです。ダビデはまたぺリシテ人に囚われた時に詩篇５７篇を作りました。
1神よ、わたしをあわれんでください。わたしをあわれんでください。わたしの魂はあなたに寄り頼みます。滅びのあらしの過ぎ去るまではあなたの翼の陰をわたしの避け所とします。2わたしはいと高き神に呼ばわります。わたしのためにすべての事をなしとげられる神に呼ばわります。（詩篇５７篇１節―２節）
彼は捕らわれの身でありながら、滅びの嵐が彼の前を過ぎ去るまで、主の翼の陰に自らを置き、彼はそのところで静まり、そしていと高き神へと自分の意識をコネクトさせたのです。このようなことはダビデだけがしていたことではありません。預言者イザヤの存在は聖書の中でも際立っていますが、その彼が何よりも強調したことをご存知ですか。
3その時、主はイザヤに言われた、「今、あなたとあなたの子シャル・ヤシュブと共に出て行って、布さらしの野へ行く大路に沿う上の池の水道の端でアハズに会い、4彼に言いなさい、『気をつけて、静かにし、恐れてはならない。レヂンとスリヤおよびレマリヤの子が激しく怒っても、これら二つの燃え残りのくすぶっている切り株のゆえに心を弱くしてはならない。5スリヤはエフライムおよびレマリヤの子と共にあなたにむかって悪い事を企てて言う、6「われわれはユダに攻め上って、これを脅かし、われわれのためにこれを破り取り、タビエルの子をそこの王にしよう」と。7主なる神はこう言われる、この事は決して行われない、また起ることはない（イザヤ７章３節―７節）。
イザヤに対して神は語りかけました「気をつけて、静かにしなさい。恐れるな」と。これは静まって私の前にとどまりなさいということです。主のみ前で主はどんなお方であり、何をなされたのか、故に何をこれからなされるのかということに心を向けなさいということです。イザヤ３０書においては主はイスラエルの民に語りかけます。
15主なる神、イスラエルの聖者はこう言われた、「あなたがたは立ち返って、落ち着いているならば救われ、穏やかにして信頼しているならば力を得る」。（イザヤ３０章１５節）。
主の前に立ち返り、落ち着け。穏やかに、主の前に静まり、主への信頼を獲得しなさい。そこからあなたは力を得るからと主は言われました。そして、この１５節はこう続きます。
しかし、あなたがたはこの事を好まなかった。16かえって、あなたがたは言った、「否、われわれは馬に乗って、とんで行こう」と。それゆえ、あなたがたはとんで帰る。また言った、「われらは速い馬に乗ろう」と。それゆえ、あなたがたを追う者は速い（イザヤ３０章１５節－１６節）。
私達は今日「何かをしている」ということが評価される時代に生きています。このような時代に生きていますと「何かをしていない」と不安になります。カレンダーにびっしりと予定が書かれていないと不安になるという方がいます。不安になるとあれもこれも始める方がいます。その不安を何かをすることによって、なくそうとしているのです。しかし、悲しいかなそれをすればするほど、不安になります。覚えましょう。イスラエルの民は「立ち返り、落ち着き、穏やかにし、私に信頼していなさい」と主に言われたにもかかわらず、そのことを好まず、すなわち主の前に静ますことを好まずに、「われわれは馬にのってとんでいこう。そうだ、ただの馬じゃない、早い馬を探しに行こう。そして、それを買って、それに乗ろう」と飛び出したのです。そんな彼らに聖書は人の世界の現実を語ります。「それゆえ、あなたがたを追う者は速い」。
ダビデには朝から晩まで多くのことを成し遂げることができた体力と知力があったから、彼は偉大な功績を後世に残すことができたのでしょうか。イザヤが偉大な預言者となりえたのは、彼の生まれつきの際立った能力によるのでしょうか。いいえ、彼らの力と人知を超えた預言の秘訣は彼らが神の前に一人、静まることによって上から与えられらのです。
何を隠そう、神の一人子イエス・キリストもこのような時を何よりも大切にしました。弟子たちが朝早く、イエスの寝床にイエスを探すけれど、そこにイエスの姿がないというのが日常でありました。イエス様はそんなに早くどこに行っていたのでしょうか。そうです、イエス様は『寂しい所に退いて、祈っておられた』（ルカ５章１６節）のです。御子キリストの力と知恵の源泉は、御父との静けさの中における交わりだったということを私達は心に刻まなければなりません。イエス様はこの力の秘訣を当然、弟子達にも教え、勧めたのです。このことなくして、世に出て行っても彼らの自力は何の役にも立たないということをイエス様は知っていたからです。
皆さん、私達はダビデやイザヤ、そしてイエス様があえて生活の中に確保したこの静かな主との時間をもっていますか。昨日の自分を、そして、これまでの自分の歩みを振り返る時間をとっていますか。ハーケンを一つ一つ、確認していますか。その確認が今日の力となり、将来への確信となるのです。それとも今日も速い馬を探し求めていますか。主の言葉に耳を傾け、それにかけてみませんか。
「あなたがたは立ち返って、落ち着いているならば救われ、穏やかにして信頼しているならば力を得る」。（イザヤ３０章１５節）。
子供達がインターネットをつなげます。我が家では夜九時にはネットをやめるように言います。もう一年以上前から言っているのです。しかし、九時を過ぎても彼らはやり続けます。言われるまで、否、言われても見続けます。聞き続けます。このことで、我が家ではこれまで何度も親父の雷が落ちました。
私はこのことについて大いなる危機感を感じています。それはある事実が分かった時からさらに強いものとなりました。そうです、彼らはネットをやめたら、自分は何をしたらいいのか分からないと言ったことがあるのです。そうです、すなわちネットをオフにしたら自分もオフになり始めたのです。
そして垂れ流しの情報や映像を見ていますから、もはや自分で考えることができなくなっていくのです。新聞は原発の問題について一面に取り上げます。ドラッグの問題は取り上げられ、注目されます。糖尿病や高血圧についてなら私達はいつも話しています。しかし、これらのことについては話題となることはありません。しかし、このことはジワリジワリとこの世界に広がっています。ネットをオフにしたら、何をしたらいいのか分からない、考えることができない人間が今、増えているのです。
パスカルは「人間は考える葦だ」と言いました。人は弱いけれど、人は考えることができるから偉大なのだと彼は言ったのです。しかし、この彼の言葉は今や過去のものとなりつつあります。私達は今やその「考える」ということすら捨てようとしています。そうでなくても葦のように弱い私達が、考えることまでも放棄してしまったらどうなるのでしょうか。自ら考え、自ら決断するということができない人間が、この人の世を生きていくことができますか。これからの世界で本当に恐れるべきことはこのようなことです。
そもそも、なぜ私達は考えることがなくなったのですか。それは私達が一人、静まる時が生活の中から失われたからです。一人になること、静かになるということ自体があるべきではない、寂しいことなのだとされるのが今の世の中です。親は子供が一人でいるとかわいそうと、すぐに手を差し伸べます。一人旅は敬遠され、いつも誰かと一緒にいることが望まれます。
さらにはその静けさが与えられても、そこに身を置くことが出来ない人間が生まれているのです。耳にヘッドフォンを入れて、どこに行くにも何かを聞いていなければならない人間が作り上げられている。何かの音がないと集中できない、落ち着かないという人間が増え続けています。
今や私達は人類史上、主の前に静まることが最も難しい時代に生きています。私達の忙しさはその時を持つことを不可能なことのように私達の前に立ちはだかるでしょう。しかし、私達にどんなに忙しくても一人、主の前に静まる時間を持たなければなりません。そこで主の恵みを思い起こすのです。ハーケンが確かにこれまで撃ち込まれてきたということを確認し、そこから明日を思い、将来を思うこと、このことを私達は怠ってはなりません。このことを怠るゆえの後のツケは大きいのです。
詩篇２３篇はこんな言葉で閉じられます『わたしはとこしえに主の宮に住むでしょう』。このダビデの言葉ですが、旧約聖書の中でとこしえの世界、すなわち死後の世界について触れている個所はあまりありません。しかし、主の前に静まることを知っていたダビデはとこしえに自分は主の宮に住むことを悟り、それを希望としていたのでありましょう。そして、この主の宮に関することは、死んでから後にとこしえにそこに住むということだけではなく、彼の心の中では、既にこの地上でその主の宮に住むということが始まっていたのです。詩篇の２７篇に彼はこんな言葉を書き残しています。
1主はわたしの光、わたしの救だ、わたしはだれを恐れよう。主はわたしの命のとりでだ。わたしはだれをおじ恐れよう。2わたしのあだ、わたしの敵である悪を行う者どもが、襲ってきて、わたしをそしり、わたしを攻めるとき、彼らはつまずき倒れるであろう。3たとい軍勢が陣営を張って、わたしを攻めても、わたしの心は恐れない。たといいくさが起って、わたしを攻めても、なおわたしはみずから頼むところがある。4わたしは一つの事を主に願った、わたしはそれを求める。わたしの生きるかぎり、主の家に住んで、主のうるわしきを見、その宮で尋ねきわめることを。5それは主が悩みの日に、その仮屋のうちにわたしを潜ませ、その幕屋の奥にわたしを隠し、岩の上にわたしを高く置かれるからである（詩篇２７編１節ー５節）。
彼が切に主に願い求めたことは、死んでから後だけではなく、今、こうして生きている間も主の家に住んで、主のうるわしきを見させていただき、主の宮でそのことを尋ねきわめたいのだと。
それでは皆さん、この主の宮はダビデの王宮のどこかにあったのでしょうか。ダビデは朝ごとにその主の宮に行っていたのでしょうか。いいえ、彼が主の前に静まる所、それがいかなる場所であっても、彼が生きる限り、そこは主の宮だったのです。彼はその場で一人、主の麗しさに憩うことを知っていたのです。
「War Game」という映画がありましたでしょう。お勧めの映画です。でひ、見てください。その映画では夫婦の関係が破綻しそうなカップルの妻がまず、祈りを始めます。どこで祈るのでしょう。彼女はクローゼットの中で祈るのです。彼女にとりまして、その彼女にとりまして、そのクローゼットの中は主と交わる主の宮なのです。
このようなダビデの生きざまを思う時に、あぁーわたしもその宮にとどまりたいと思うのは私だけでしょうか。生きる限り、そのところで主のうるわしさを見続け、その宮でこの人生に起きる事柄を主の前に尋ね、そしてきわめたいと皆さんも思いませんでしょうか。それが家のキッチンかもしれない、会社の倉庫かもしれない、どこであってもあなたの主の宮を見つけようではありませんか。
私達は一人、一定の時を、主と共に過ごし時間として聖別すべきです。その主の宮に諸々の荷を背負い座り、主と交わり、その諸々の荷を主にお預けして、そこから立ち上がっていく。この醍醐味を私達が会得することができたら、これに代わるものはこの地上にはないのです。お祈りしましょう。
Need for a quiet time in front of God

We have been studying Psalms 23 written by David for the last few weeks. Today is the last of that series. Next Sunday is a Senior Day and Rev. Ichibei Honda will deliver the Sunday sermon. We will start a new message series on 25th of this month.
David, the second king of Israel, had lived as a shepherd in his youth. And he wrote this Psalms 23 as an individual who had spent his life in front of God. Since he wrote the Psalms 23 in his late years, he could have been looking back on his life when he wrote the Psalms 23.
1 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, 3 he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. 4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
As I have indicated before, David’s life was not without hardship. He experienced many tribulations. Although his family had not expected too much of David, he was anointed by God and became the king of Israel. Although David was a greatest king of Israel, he had committed big errors and was not free from human weakness. He had to face many tribulations and many life-threatening dangers in his life. We must remember that David wrote this Psalms 23 based on his personal experience of tribulations, blunders, and weaknesses.
As a youth, David was not recognized as someone special by his parents and siblings. He must have been recalling his lonely shepherd days in the wilderness of his home town Bethlehem when he wrote: 1 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,
He was recalling his mistake of succumbing to lust with Beth Sheba and of resorting to abusing his military power to get what he wanted. He wrote: 3 he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.
His life was threatened by King Saul and his own son Absalom. He managed to survive such threat and wrote: 4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me;
David had made mistakes and he was forced to face the consequences. What he received was a rod from God. But, David understood that he got a rod from God since God was treating him as his own child rather than an illegitimate one. That was why he said: your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
David was constantly chased by his enemy and his life was threatened. But, God provided him with what he needed. That is why he also wrote: 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
In these verses, David was looking back on what he had experienced firsthand. But in the last part of Psalms 23, David wrote about his future, about what had not taken place yet. 6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
That famous movie producer Akira Kurosawa said what makes a good movie producer is not creation but personal memory. He said that creation is based on memory, one’s own personal experience and what he has read. It is not possible to create anything from nothing. These words carry a powerful implication.
Although David was writing about his life he had not seen yet, David was full of confidence. He must have based his words about his future image on what he had in his mind. Where, then, did the image come from? Where did the confidence come from? They were based on his personal life experience that was in his memory.
Rock climbing is a very popular sport. Rock climbers climb up the face of a steep cliff using only ropes. I can say that I can never take up this sport myself. I get shivers just looking at the picture of a rock climber in action.
How do they climb the steep cliff? How are the ropes supporting them secured to the cliff? These climbers use a device called pitons, which they pound into the rock as they climb the cliff. Using pitons requires an additional time to climb the cliff. They have to make sure that the pitons are pounded securely into the rock to make sure that their lives are not at risk. They secure their rope to these pitons as they climb to the top of the cliff. When he looks back down, he can see his steps. And these steps are marked with pitons he had pounded into the rock.
We too have pitons of our life. When we experience the depth of God’s grace, these moments mark our pitons of life. These pitons mark moments when God listened to our prayers, victory of our faith, and the moments when we had overcome hardships with the help of God.
The fact that we are here now means that we have come over many hard moments and tribulations. And they mark our pitons of our life.
When David looked back on his life, he saw many pitons marking life-changing moments of his life. At the same time, he recalled God’s hands pounding pitons into the cliff of his life for him. When he looked at each of these pitons, his mouth had to sing out with praise of God. He praised God this way: “Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
David recognized that his life was not yet over. There still was more cliff climbing left for him. But, he was convinced that, as he had done so before, God would guide David surely with more pitons up to the top of the cliff. As he looked back on the guidance he had received from God before, David was sure that God’s grace and love would continue to come with his life. He was sure that as he had been protected by God on this earth, so would he be taken to the God’s palace to live there forever.
Two weeks ago, I told you how important it is for us to come to realize that God’s grace is poured on us. So, some of you might be thinking that unless we come to recognize God’s grace, nothing would happen to us.
But I did not go into detailed explanation of necessary steps we must take to come to realize the grace of God. But, this is very important. So, let me talk about the necessary steps we must take.
Let me point out first that this realization does not come to us as a momentary inspiration. There are steps we must take before we can realize the grace of God. This Psalms 23 did not come from his inspiration either. How, then, did David come to acquire these words of praise in Psalm 23?
This is the most important point of today’s message. This is the point that would decide the course of our life. This would determine whether or not we can sing the praise to God in our later years of life as David had done in his Psalms 23. What then is this necessary step we must take? That step is for us to stand in front of God alone. What we need to do is to make a quiet time to go in front of God alone so that we can listen to his voice.
Some of you might ask if David did this. Let me elaborate. In fact, we can find David doing exactly that in many sections of the Bible. Psalms 143 was also written by David.
1 Lord, hear my prayer, listen to my cry for mercy; in your faithfulness and righteousness come to my relief. 2 Do not bring your servant into judgment, for no one living is righteous before you. 3 The enemy pursues me, he crushes me to the ground; he makes me dwell in the darkness like those long dead. 4 So my spirit grows faint within me; my heart within me is dismayed. 5 I remember the days of long ago; I meditate on all your works and consider what your hands have done. (Psalms 143:1-5)
At this time, David was being chased by his enemy and his life was in danger. So, what did David do at such a moment? David wrote “I remember the days of long ago; I meditate on all your works and consider what your hands have done.” In other words, he quieted himself in front of God, meditated on his situation, and told God frankly what he was going through. And, he was recalling what God had done to him before, and how strong and loving God’s hands had been to him. David found a quiet moment in front of God. He was not looking for a moment of inspiration. He had made time so that he could be alone and calm. David also wrote Psalms 57 when he was caught by Philistines:
1 Have mercy on me, my God, have mercy on me, for in you I take refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed. 2 I cry out to God Most High, to God, who vindicates me. (Psalms 57:1-2)
Although captured by his enemy, he placed himself in the shadow of God’s wings until the storm passed away, quieting himself in front of God and connecting with God. This behavior was not unique to David alone. Prophet Isaiah was one of the most well-known writers of the Bible. Let us read what Isaiah wrote:
3 Then the Lord said to Isaiah, “Go out, you and your son Shear-Jashub, to meet Ahaz at the end of the aqueduct of the Upper Pool, on the road to the Launderer’s Field. 4 Say to him, ‘Be careful, keep calm and don’t be afraid. Do not lose heart because of these two smoldering stubs of firewood—because of the fierce anger of Rezin and Aram and of the son of Remaliah. 5 Aram, Ephraim and Remaliah’s son have plotted your ruin, saying, 6 “Let us invade Judah; let us tear it apart and divide it among ourselves, and make the son of Tabeel king over it.” 7 Yet this is what the Sovereign Lord says: “‘It will not take place, it will not happen, (Isaiah 7:3-7)
God told Isaiah “Be careful. Keep Calm and don’t be afraid.” God said to be calm and stay in front of God. God said Isaiah to contemplate who God was, what God had done to him, and what God would do for him. In Isaiah chapter 30, God talked to the people of Israel. 15 This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: “In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength, (Isaiah 30:15)
God said that we must repent and calm down in front of God. The source of our strength is our trust in God. This verse 15 continues: but you would have none of it. 16 You said, ‘No, we will flee on horses.’ Therefore you will flee! You said, ‘We will ride off on swift horses.’ Therefore your pursuers will be swift! (Isaiah 30:15-16)
We are all evaluated by what we have accomplished. That is why we feel uneasy if we are not doing something. We feel uneasy unless the calendar is filled with things to do. Anxiety caused us to put ourselves into some new ventures. We are trying to get rid of our anxiety by doing something, anything. But, the reality is we get more uneasy the more we do things. The people of Israel was told to “repent, rest, calm down and trust in God.” But, the people of Israel did not listen. They did not choose to quiet down in front of God. Instead, they said: “We will flee on our horses. We will find and purchase the swift horses and flee on them.” But, the Bible told them the reality of life. Namely, “Your pursuer would be swift.”
Was David able to leave great accomplishments because of his extraordinary physical and mental strength? Was Isaiah the great prophet because of his innate ability he had from birth? No, their strength and extraordinary power of prophecy were given to them from above since they knew how important it is to be in front of God alone in a quiet moment.
Jesus Christ, the only son of God, also cherished such moments with God. It was uncommon that Jesus was not found in his bed in the early hours of the morning. What was Jesus doing in those times? Bible says that Jesus ”withdrew to lonely places and prayed” (Luke 5:16) We must remember that Jesus gained his source of power and wisdom from his encounter with God in the quiet moments he had set aside. Jesus also told the disciple about his secret. Jesus encouraged them to do the same since he knew that their own power would be not enough to face the world.
We must ask ourselves this morning. Are we making quiet time to be with God just like Jesus did? Are we making time to look back on our yesterday and our steps of life we had taken? Are we acknowledging each one of the pitons in our life? When we acknowledge such pitons, we get strength to live today and confidence for our future. Or, are we looking for a swift horse instead? Why not listen to the voice of God?
“In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength.” (Isaiah 30:15)
My children are hooked with the internet. I had told them to cut themselves from the internet after 9 p.m. I have been telling them to do so over a year. But, they continue to play with the internet past 9 p.m. They do so until they are told to stop. No, they continue even after they are told to stop. That is why they were scolded many time by their father.
I am worried very much about them. This feeling of anxiety was heightened after I found out something. My children told me that they would not know what to do without the internet connection. They said they would be cut off from themselves without connection to the internet.
They are constantly bombarded with information and images. They have reached a point when they can no longer think on their own. News media talks about the problems of nuclear reactors. They report about the problem with drugs. They talk constantly about diabetes and high blood pressure. But, we do not talk about them ourselves. These sad phenomena have slowly taken over our life. Too many people would not know what to do or how to think without the internet. This is the reality.
Pascal said “Man is but a reed. But he is a thinking reed.” He said man is weak. But man is great because man can think. But, his words are fast fading in our world. We are forgetting to think these days. We are weak as a reed. What would happen to us if we give up thinking? How can we live without our ability to think and make decisions? We must realize this threat and seriously consider its consequences.
How did we come to lose the power to think? This is because we have forgotten the importance of being quiet by ourselves. Some think that to be alone and quiet is a sign of loneliness. They think we should not be found in such a situation. Parents feel sorry for a child if he is alone. They encourage him to be with someone all the time.
These days, just finding a quiet time and place alone does not solve the basic problem. People always have headphones in their ears and are conditioned to be listening to something at all times. Some say they do not feel safe unless they can listen to something in their ears.
We can say that we live in the moment of our history when it is most difficult to find a quiet time in front of God. Our busy life makes it almost impossible to find a quiet moment with God. But, we need to find quiet moments alone with God however busy we might be. We can contemplate on God’s grace at those moments. We need to recognize that pitons had been pounded into the rock by God for us. That will give us chance to think about tomorrow and our future. We must make efforts to find quiet time with God. If we neglect to find such moments, we will suffer later.
Psalms 23 concludes with these words: “I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” David talked about living forever in the house of the Lord. However, the Old Testament does not talk about the eternal world or the life after death. But, David, who knew to be quiet before God, understood that he would live in the house of the Lord and was looking forward to it. David not only was talking about living in the house of the Lord after death but he felt in his heart that he was already living there while on this earth. David recorded these words in Psalms 27:
1 The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid? 2 When the wicked advance against me to devour me, it is my enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall. 3 Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then I will be confident. 4 One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple. 5 For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent and set me high upon a rock. (Psalms 27:1-5)
What he desired most was not only to live in the house of the Lord after death but also live there and see the glory of God while living on this earth.
Was this house of the Lord situated somewhere in the Palace of King David? Did he go to that house of the Lord every morning? No. He was in the house of the Lord in his mind whenever he calmed down before God alone. There, he felt the grace and glory of God.
There was a movie called “War Room.” I would strongly recommend you to see it. I would even say that it is the “must-see” movie. In this movie, a couple is facing break up of their marriage. The wife begins to pray. Where did she pray? She prayed in a closet. For her, this closet was the house of the Lord to be with God.
When we read about David, many of us wish we could be in the house of the Lord like David did. As long as we live, we also want to see the glory of God, ask God about our daily happenings, and find guidance from him. This house of the Lord could be your kitchen. It could be the warehouse of your company. It does not matter where. We can and should find our house of the Lord.
Each one of us should set aside a quiet time to go before God alone. We should take our burden and issues into that house of the Lord, talk to God, and ask his help so that we can face our daily life. This would be the greatest key to our life. There is nothing more powerful like this on earth.
