『人は食い飲みし、その労苦によって得たもので心を楽しませるより良い事はない。これもまた神の手から出ることを、わたしは見た。誰が神を離れて、食い、かつ楽しむことのできる者があろう。神は、その心にかなう人に、知恵と知識と喜びとをくださる』（聖書：伝道の書２章２４節ー２６節）
「クリスチャンになる」ということはイコール、その日から「人生を楽しむことを放棄する」と考えている方が時々おられますが、それを聞く度に私は残念な思いがします。
もちろん、人生を楽しむとは享楽や快楽に溺れるような生活をするということではありません。度々、伝道の書で触れていますように、これらのことがどこに到るかということは、既にソロモンによって検証済みで、その結論は、風を捕らえるようなもの、空しいものだとソロモンは言いきっています。
そのような意味で彼は「楽しむこと」に苦労した人で、最終的に「楽しむ力」（伝道の書５章１９節）は神からいただくものなのだということを知った人なのです。私達が神から与えられている人生は楽しむべきものなのです。

人生は楽しむべきもの

今日は伝道の書５章１０節から２０節より「人生は楽しむべきもの」というタイトルでお話をさせていただきます。今日の御言葉はこんな言葉と共に始まります。
「金銭を好む者は金銭をもって満足しない。富を好む者は富を得て満足しない。これもまた空である」（１０）
この言葉を前に私達は色々な思いを抱きます。「豊かにさえなれば心が満たされだろう」という思いが心のどこかにある方にとりまして、この言葉は受け入れがたい言葉かもしれません。
またある方は「それは私がもっと豊かになってみなければ、実際のところどうだか分からない。私はまだそのゴールに達していない」と思います。しかし、確認しましょう。この言葉はその豊かさの極みに達し、そのゴールに達したソロモンが語っている言葉だということを。
彼は莫大の富を前に、それでも心が満たされていない自分を見出したのでしょう。ソロモンは自分の経験をふまえて言います。
「財産が増せば、これを食う者も増す。その持ち主は目にそれを見るだけで、なんの益があるか。働く者は食べることが少なくても多くても、快く眠る。しかし飽き足りるほどの富は、彼に眠ることをゆるさない」（１１節、１２節）。
私達は時に眠れぬ夜を過ごすことがあります。その理由は色々あるでしょう。おそらく、その多くは家族の事、健康の事、仕事の事、人間関係等でありましょう。
私達はそれらの何に悩むのでしょうか。私達はこれらのものを獲得した時から、今度はそれを失ってしまうことを恐れ、悩むのではないでしょうか。財産を増し、それによって生活の糧を得る者が増えれば、苦労も増し、富は彼に眠ることをゆるしません。
富める国であればあるほど神経内科やカウンセラーは多く、医師から処方される睡眠薬、精神安定剤の数もはるかに多いということはよく聞く話です。
ソロモンはそんな所有するゆえの悩みに苦しみ、眠れない夜を過ごしたのでしょう。そんなことを経験したソロモンは箴言３０章７節から９節に、こんな毎日こそが私にとって幸いなのではないかと、こんなことを神様に願い求めています。
7わたしは二つのことをあなたに求めます、わたしの死なないうちに、これをかなえてください。8うそ、偽りをわたしから遠ざけ、貧しくもなく、また富みもせず、ただなくてならぬ食物でわたしを養ってください。9飽き足りて、あなたを知らないといい、「主とはだれか」と言うことのないため、また貧しくて盗みをし、わたしの神の名を汚すことのないためです（箴言３０章７節ー９節）。
貧しいゆえに盗んだり、卑屈になって神の名を汚すことがないように、かといって、富むことによって、自分に過信し、傲慢になり、神とは誰かということがありませんようにとソロモンは神に願います。
それゆえ、ソロモンはその中間を生き、私になくてならぬものを日ごとに与えてくださっている神によって養われ、なんと神様は恵み深いのだろうという感謝が絶えることのない日々を送ることができますようにと願うのです。
主にある皆さん、この言葉は私達の心に語りかけます。あなたの生き方をもう一度、考えてみないかと。二週間前にお話したように、これらのことをあなたのテーブルの上に並べて、座って、よくよく考えてみないかと。さらにソロモンは労して得たものについて書き続けます。
15彼は母の胎から出てきたように、すなわち裸で出てきたように帰って行く。彼はその労苦によって得た何物をもその手に携え行くことができない。16人は全くその来たように、また去って行かなければならない。これもまた悲しむべき悪である。風のために労する者になんの益があるか（１５節、１６節）。
ここには全ての人間が必ず通らなければならないことが書かれています。それは我々、人間が裸で生まれ、何一つこの地上で得たものを携えることなく、また裸で土に帰っていくということです。
本来、私達はこのことを大前提として私達のライフプランをたてるべきだと思うのですが、私達はこの事実に目を向けることなく、あたかも自分は永遠に生きるかのように日々を過ごし、かき集めた物が自分の価値を決めるかのように生きる傾向があります。
そんな私達に詩篇４９篇１６節‐２０節もソロモンと同じことを私達に語りかけます。
16人が富を得るときも、その家の栄えが増し加わるときも、恐れてはならない。17彼が死ぬときは何ひとつ携え行くことができず、その栄えも彼に従って下って行くことはないからである。18たとい彼が生きながらえる間、自分を幸福と思っても、またみずから幸いな時に、人々から称賛されても、19彼はついにおのれの先祖の仲間に連なる。彼らは絶えて光を見ることがない。20人は栄華のうちに長くとどまることはできない。滅びうせる獣にひとしい。
ロシアの文豪、トルストイはかつて「人にはどれだけの土地が必要か」という短編小説を書きました。
昔、ロシアにパホームという働きものの農民がいました。彼の悩みは自分の所有する土地が少ないということでした。彼は仲間に言います。「土地がたっぷりあったら、わしは誰も怖くないぞ、たとえ悪魔だろうと！」
ところが、その話を悪魔が聞いており、こう言いました「俺はお前に土地をたくさんくれてやる。土地の力でおまえを滅ぼしてやる」
そんなある日、パホームは無料で土地がもらえるという話を聞きました。そして、分かりましたことは、彼が日の出と共に出発し、日没までに帰ってくる間、自分で歩き、囲ってきた土地はすべて自分のものとなる。しかし、日没までに元の場所に帰ってこれなければだめだ」ということでした。
こうしてパホームは早速、翌朝、出発します。歩いていくと、彼方には肥沃な土地が続いており、そこを目指します。やがて太陽が頭の上に来ました。休んでいる暇はありません。とにかく前に、前にと、もっと、もっとと進みました。
さすがに疲労もピークとなり、引き返そうかとも思いますが、その先にはさらによい土地があるように思われ、さらに進みます。しかし、さすがに時間がなくなってきたので、後ろ髪を引かれながら、必死になってもとの場所に戻ってきます。
心身共に疲労困憊した状態、陽はほぼ傾きかけ、出発地点となった丘を遠くに見、それをかけのぼった時に、人々は口々に言いました「よくやったな！たいしたもんだ！」「お前は今や大地主だ！」。
しかし、その時、彼はばったりと倒れてしまい、そのまま息を引き取りました。結局、パホームには自分の体が収まるだけの土地が与えられ、彼はそこに葬られました（『人間にはどれだけの土地が必要か？』レフ・トルストイの民話集から）。
トルストイは、その体が収まるスペースこそが、人間が最終的に必要な土地の広さなのだとこの小説を通して語りかけたかったのでしょう。
今日、そのスペースは小さくなり、私達には一つの壺を置くスペース－があれば、それで事足りるようになりました。いいえ、最近は散骨もなされていますから、もはや最終的に私達に必要な土地はないのです。そう、このことは既に聖書が言っている通りです。我々は土から作られ、土にかえるのです。
エジプトのピラミッドは遺跡としては見応えがあるのでしょうが、それが一人の人間が葬られる場所、そのために何万人もの人達の汗と涙が長い年月、注がれたという事実を知る時に、私達は悲しく、空しい思いがします。
主にある皆さん、それでは我々はこれらのことを踏まえて、どう生きたらいいのかということをお話しましょう。１７節以降を読みましょう。
17人は一生、暗やみと、悲しみと、多くの悩みと、病と、憤りの中にある。18見よ、わたしが見たところの善かつ美なる事は、神から賜わった短い一生の間、食い、飲み、かつ日の下で労するすべての労苦によって、楽しみを得る事である。これがその分だからである。19また神はすべての人に富と宝と、それを楽しむ力を与え、またその分を取らせ、その労苦によって楽しみを得させられる。これが神の賜物である。20このような人は自分の生きる日のことを多く思わない。神は喜びをもって彼の心を満たされるからである。
ソロモンは言いました「人は一生、暗やみと、悲しみと、多くの悩みと、病と、憤りの中にある」。彼はこのことを己の人生に認め、このことは確かに私達にも思い当たることが多くあります。
そうです、このことは確かに私達の人生を言い表しています。そのような中でソロモンが考える最善なる生き方が今、読んだ言葉なのです。
この一文を読むと、なんだ、結局ソロモンは「飲めや、食えや」と楽しめばいいと言っているのかと思われるかもしれません。でも、私達はこれまでに、ソロモンはそのようなことは風を捕らえるように空しいことだと断言しているということ見てきました。それではこの言葉は何を言っているのでしょうか。
注意深くこの文章を読む時に、ここには四度も「神」という言葉が記されているのを私達は発見します。これは伝道の書という書において、とても稀なことです。ここには「神」という言葉が集中して書かれているのです。
そして、それらの前後を見ます時に、ソロモンが言わんとしていることを知ることができます。まず第一、１８節、ソロモンは「神から賜った短い一生の間」と書いています。
この一言が言わんとしていることは、私達の一生は神から授かっているものだということです。英語の「GIVEN」はここで「賜る」という日本語が使われており、その言葉は「ありがたくいただく」ということです。
そして、「いただく」ということを知る時に、私達はもう一方の事柄、すなわち「取られる」ということに対しても思いがいたるのです。あのヨブの言葉が言っているとおりです。
「わたしは裸で母の胎を出た。また裸でかしこに帰ろう。主が与え、主が取られたのだ。主のみ名はほむべきかな」ヨブ１章２０節
そうです、与えてくださったのは神、それを取られるのも神。この私達の生涯にとって、最も大切な「始まり」と「終わり」に関与しておられるお方は、その二つの間、すなわち私達の人生にも目を注ぎ、そこにある望みを持っておられるとソロモンは言うのです。
それでは神は私達に何を望まれているのか。それはこの神に与えられている私達の一生を楽しむことを神は望んでいてくださるというのです。
１９節にありますように「また神はすべての人に富と宝と、それを楽しむ力を与え、またその分を取らせ、その労苦によって楽しみを得させられる。これが神の賜物である」と書かれているとおりです。
神様は私達それぞれに、その分にあたる富と宝を与え、それを楽しむ力を与えてくださるというのです。
私達にとって富とは文字通り、私達の財産と呼ばれるものもあるでしょうし、もっと精神的な私達の心の豊かさということもあるでしょう、また私達の宝ということになりますと、それは私達の家族や友人という人達も含まれるでしょう。
この聖書の言葉に従えば、これらが与えられている私達はそれを楽しむ力を神からいただく必要があるようです。
そうです、なぜなら私達はその楽しみ方を知らず、時に誤った楽しみ方をしてしまうからです。神は私達がそれらを楽しむための力をお与えくださり、私達はそれを賜り、自分の労苦に対する報いを喜ぶ。これが神の私達に対するギフトなのです。

私達は時に「どれだけ楽しめるか」ということは「そのためにどれだけのバジェットがあるのか」に比例するかのように考えます。しかし、実際、大金を注いだのに本心を言えば、別に楽しいこともなく、でもあれだけ使ったのだから楽しかったに違いないと自分に暗示をかけることがあるのです。
私達は自分が思う以上に実際のところ、楽しむことに苦労しているようです。そして、その苦労を徹底的に体験したのがソロモンなのです。彼は自らを楽しませようとありとあらゆることをほぼ無制限に試みた人なのですから。それらを踏まえて彼はここでこのようなことを言っているのです。
結局のところ、神様が私達に楽しむ力を与えてくれない限り、私は自らを楽しませることもできなかったのだよとソロモンは言うのです。ソロモンは伝道の書２章２４節-２６節でも同じ事を言っています故に、このことは彼にとって本当に確かなことだったのでしょう。
24人は食い飲みし、その労苦によって得たもので心を楽しませるより良い事はない。これもまた神の手から出ることを、わたしは見た。25だれが神を離れて、食い、かつ楽しむことのできる者があろう。26神は、その心にかなう人に、知恵と知識と喜びとをくださる（伝道の書２章２４節ー２６節）。
ソロモンはここにはっきりと書いています。私達の喜びや楽しみは神の手から出るものなのだと。誰が神を離れて、その人生を楽しむことができようか。神はその心にかなう者に知恵と知識と喜びをくださると。
定期集会で私達はイエス・キリストのたとえ話を見ています。それを通して、気がつかされたことがあります。
それは律法学者やパリサイ人が度々、イエス様とその弟子達に向かい「なぜ、いつも彼らは飲んだり、食べたりしているのだ。なぜ断食をしないのだ」と非難していたということです。
そうです、彼らがイエスと弟子たちの姿をエルサレムの街角に見る時に、彼らはよく取税人や罪人と飲み食いしていたのです。
彼らは黙々と食べていたのでしょうか。いいえ、彼らは互いを喜び、その食事を楽しんでいたに違いない。その光景を見て人々はイエス様に言いました。
「ヨハネの弟子たちは、しばしば断食をし、また祈をしており、パリサイ人の弟子たちもそうしているのに、あなたの弟子たちは食べたり飲んだりしています」（ルカ５章３３節）。
このことに対してイエスはこう答えました。「あなたがたは、花婿が一緒にいるのに、婚礼の客に断食をさせることができるであろうか。35 しかし、花婿が奪い去られる日が来る。その日には断食をするであろう」（ルカ５章３４節ー３５節）
「断食」はユダヤ人のあいだでは神の前での謙虚な行為として重んじられ、祈願、嘆き、悔い改めなどと結びついているものであり、イエス様ご自身もそのことを大切なこととされていました。
そのことを踏まえつつも、イエス様は言われたのです「花婿が共にいる時に断食をするだろうか」。この花婿はイエス様ご自身のことを言い表しており、この後にイエス様は続いて「新しいぶどう酒は新しい皮袋に入れるべきである」（３８節）と言われ、自らによる新しい生き方を新しいぶどう酒にも例えています。
パリサイ人は律法を守ることによって御国に入ろうとしました。しかし、イエス・キリストと共に生きようとする者は、イエスの到来と共に既に始まっている神の支配の中に自らの身を委ねます。
それは自分の努力によって義を獲得するのではなく、神の恵みであるイエスの義による罪の赦しを信じ、罪を心から悔いて、主イエスにすべてを委ねるのです。ここに花婿なるイエスと共に生きる喜びと新しい歩みが与えられます。
主イエスは私達に約束されました。「私は世の終わりまで、あなた方と共にいる」。そうです、この言葉は私達が花婿なる主と共にこの人生を歩んでいることなのだという約束の言葉なのです。
ヨハネはあのカナの婚礼において、イエス様が水を最高のワインに変えた奇跡について記し、それがキリストがなされた最初の奇跡であると言われました。
この奇跡には霊的な色々な意味が含まれています。イエス様は実際に今、目の前でなされている婚礼の喜びと楽しみは中断されるべきことではなく、新しいブドウ酒、すなわちイエス・キリストは、その楽しみと喜びを継続させるものなのだとご自身を言い表したのではないでしょうか。
使徒行伝において、弟子たちの上に聖霊が下った時に人々は驚き、日本語聖書はその時のことを「あの人たちは新しい酒で酔っているのだ」（２章１３節）と書いています。聖霊に満たされることを「新しいぶどう酒」によって酔っているのだと人々は間違えて判断したのです。
ソロモンの時代、神は「あなたに人生を楽しむ力」を与えると言われました。主にある皆さん、この言葉は実にこの花婿なるイエス・キリスト、新しいブドウ酒なるイエス・キリストによって実現したのです。私達は今、この花婿なるイエス様と共にあり、御霊が私達の内に住んでおられるのです。
主にある兄弟姉妹、私達は父なる神により、生まれた理由を知り、死んでから行く場所も知っています。だから、このことにおいて安心です。
そして、その始まりと終わりに存分にその御愛を注いでくださった神は、その私達の生と死の間の私達の人生と共にある花婿なるイエスと聖霊の臨在を私達に与えてくださっているのです。それ故に、申し上げます。私達の人生は楽しむのに値する人生であるということを。
私達は今もコロナ下にあります。そのような時に「楽しみ」について語ることは不謹慎なことなのかもしれない。しかし、あえて申し上げたい。このような時だからこそ、私達の生活の中にキリストにある楽しみを見出そうではありませんか。このような時でも、我らの神は私達に「楽しむ力」を与えてくださっているのですから。お祈りしましょう。
Life is to be enjoyed

Today’s message is from Ecclesiastes 5:10-20 and is titled, “Life is to be Enjoyed.” This scripture begins with the following words.
10 Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless (10 NIV).
We may have many thoughts when we hear these words. For people who think, “If only I could be rich, then my heart would be satisfied,” these words may be difficult to accept.
Others may say, “Well, I guess I won’t really know unless I get rich, but that hasn’t happened yet.”
Let’s take a look at the words spoken by Solomon who had reached his goal of becoming wealthy. Solomon found himself in the face of immense wealth and yet his heart was not satisfied. Referring to his own experience, Solomon tells us the following.
11 As goods increase, so do those who consume them. And what benefit are they to the owners except to feast their eyes on them? 12 The sleep of a laborer is sweet, whether they eat little or much, but as for the rich, their abundance permits them no sleep (Ecclesiastes 5:11-12 NIV)
We sometimes have sleepless nights. Some reasons for this could be possessions, family, health, work, or relationships with others.
What is it that bothers us? When we gain something, we fear that we will lose it.The more wealth a man has and the more he earns from it, the more hardships he will face, the more insatiable his wealth will be, and the less he will sleep.
It is often said that the richer a country is, the more psychiatrists and counselors there are and more sleeping pills and tranquilizers are prescribed.
Solomon must have spent sleepless nights suffering from the troubles that come with such possessions. After experiencing this, Solomon asked God in Proverbs 30:7-9, to give him only what he needed for each day.
7 “Two things I ask of you, Lord; do not refuse me before I die: 8 Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. 9 Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’ Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God. (Proverbs 30:7-9)
Solomon asked God to keep him from stealing and dishonoring His name because he was poor and from being overconfident and arrogant, forgetting who God is, because he was wealthy.
Solomon wanted to live in the “in-between”, to be provided for by God who would give him only what he needed day by day, and remind him to never cease being grateful for how gracious He is.
These words speak to our hearts. They cause us to rethink the way we live our lives. As I said two weeks ago, why don’t we lay these things out on the table, sit down, and think them over. Solomon goes on to write about what he has gained through his labor.
15 Everyone comes naked from their mother’s womb, and as everyone comes, so they depart. They take nothing from their toil that they can carry in their hands. 16 This too is a grievous evil: As everyone comes, so they depart, and what do they gain, since they toil for the wind?
There is something here that every human being must go through. It is that we are born naked and return naked to the earth without taking with us anything that we have gained on earth.
I think we should make our life plans based on this premise, but unfortunately, we do not pay attention to this fact, rather we tend to spend our days as if we will live forever and live as if our value is determined by what we can gather. Psalm 49:16-20 tells us the same thing as Solomon.
16 Do not be overawed when others grow rich, when the splendor of their houses increases; 17 for they will take nothing with them when they die, their splendor will not descend with them. 18 Though while they live they count themselves blessed— and people praise you when you prosper— 19 they will join those who have gone before them, who will never again see the light of life. 20 People who have wealth but lack understanding are like the beasts that perish.
Tolstoy, the Russian writer, once wrote a short story titled “How Much Land Does a Man Need?”
Tolstoy’s story tells us about a hard-working farmer in Russia named Pahom who didn’t have much land of his own. He said to his friends, “If I had plenty of land, I wouldn’t be afraid of anyone, even the devil!”
The devil heard Pahom and said, “I will give you plenty of land. I will give you lots of land and use its power to destroy you.
One day, Pahom heard about a way he could get land for free. He would have to leave at sunrise and return by sunset, and all the land he walked around the perimeter of would be his, but he had to get back to where he started from by sunset.
Thus, Pahom left promptly the next morning. As he walked, he saw fertile land ahead of him, and he set out for it. Soon the sun was above his head. There was no time to rest. He had to keep moving forward, forward, forward, further and further.
Overcome with fatigue, Pahom thought about turning back, but there seemed to be better land ahead, so he continued on. Time was running out. Pahom was desperate to get back to where he had started.
The sun was almost down and as he looked into the distance he saw the hill where he had started. Although he was physically and mentally exhausted, he climbed up the hill. People congratulated him. “Well done! Great job!” “You’re a landowner now!”
All of a sudden, he fell down and died. In the end, Pahom was given enough land for his body to be buried. (“How Much Land Does Man Need?” from Leo Tolstoy’s collection of folktales).
Through his story, Tolstoy tells us that the space needed to bury one’s body is the size of the land that we will need.
Today the space needed is even smaller – just large enough for a single urn. Actually, we no longer need the land or a space for our final resting place, because nowadays people scatter their ashes.
This is what the Bible tells us. We are made from the earth and we will return to the earth.
The Egyptian pyramids may be impressive as ruins, but we feel sad and empty when we realize that for years the sweat and tears of tens of thousands of people were poured into building such a huge place for only one man.
Let’s talk about how we should live our lives in light of these things. Let’s read on from verse 17.
17 All their days they eat in darkness, with great frustration, affliction and anger. 18 This is what I have observed to be good: that it is appropriate for a person to eat, to drink and to find satisfaction in their toilsome labor under the sun during the few days of life God has given them—for this is their lot. 19 Moreover, when God gives someone wealth and possessions, and the ability to enjoy them, to accept their lot and be happy in their toil—this is a gift of God. 20 They seldom reflect on the days of their life, because God keeps them occupied with gladness of heart. (Ecclesiastes 5:1-20 NIV)
Solomon said that all the days of a man’s life he is in darkness, sorrow, trouble, sickness, and wrath. He acknowledged this in his own life, and this is certainly something that many of us also experience.
This passage describes our lives and expresses Solomon’s idea of the best way to live our lives.
Simply reading these verses, you might think that Solomon is saying that we should enjoy life “eating and drinking.” But Solomon assures us that such things are as in vain as chasing the wind. So what is he saying?
When we read this text carefully, we find that the word “God” is mentioned four times. This is a very rare occurrence in the book of Ecclesiastes. The word “God” is concentrated in these verses.
When we look at the verses before and after, we can see what Solomon is trying to say. First of all, in verse 18, Solomon writes, “For the few days of life God has given them”.
What this phrase is trying to say is that our whole life is given to us by God. The Japanese word for a gift “GIVEN” by a superior is “TAMAWARU”, this implies that we are to be grateful for what we receive.
We understanding that we can be given something and we also understand that it can be taken away. This is what Job was talking about in Job 1:20.
“Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.” (Job 1:20)
It is God who gives life to us, and it is God who takes it from us. Solomon says that the One who is involved in the beginning and the end of our life is also concerned about our lives from the beginning till the end. God desires our entire life. So what does God want from us? He wants us to enjoy this life that He has given to us.
As it says in verse 19, “Moreover, when God gives someone wealth and possessions, and the ability to enjoy them, to accept their lot and be happy in their toil—this is a gift of God.”
God gives each of us our share of wealth and treasure, and gives us the ability to enjoy them.
For us, wealth can be our possessions, the riches in our hearts, or our family and friends, and our treasures can include our family and friends…
According to the words of the Bible, it seems that we who have been given these things need to receive the ability from God to enjoy them.
Because we don’t understand how God wants us to enjoy the wealth and possessions he gives us, we sometimes enjoy them in the wrong way. But when God gives us the ability to enjoy wealth and possessions and we receive them, we rejoice in the reward for our labor. This is God’s gift to us.
I have heard people say that “becoming a Christian” means “giving up enjoying life”, I am saddened when I hear this.
Of course, this does not mean that we should live a life of pleasure and indulgence. As I have already mentioned, all the pleasures and indulgences of life have already been experimented with by Solomon, and he concluded that there is no satisfaction – a chasing after the wind.
We sometimes think “fun” is proportional to “budget” – the greater our budget, the more fun we will have.
If we spend a lot of money and don’t have any fun, we feel we have to convince ourselves that we had fun because we spent so much. It seems that we may not have as much fun as we think we do.
Solomon was a man who entertained himself in every possible way, but in spite of his efforts, the result was emptiness. Solomon said, he couldn’t enjoy himself unless God gave him the ability to do so.
He said the same thing in Ecclesiastes 2:24-26, so this must have been something he was really sure of.
24 A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in their own toil. This too, I see, is from the hand of God, 25 for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment? 26 To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness.
Solomon wrote very clearly here. He said that our enjoyment must come from God. Who can enjoy his life apart from God? God will give wisdom, knowledge, and happiness to whom He pleases.
At a regular church meeting we are looking at the parables of Jesus Christ. Through these parables I have noticed something.
The teachers of the law and Pharisees often turned to Jesus and His disciples and asked, “Why are you always eating and drinking? Why don’t you fast?
The religious leaders saw Jesus and His disciples on the streets of Jerusalem, where they were often eating and drinking with tax collectors and sinners.
Did they eat in silence? No, they must have delighted in each other and enjoyed their meal. When people saw the scene, they said to Jesus,
“John’s disciples often fast and pray, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours go on eating and drinking.”
In response, Jesus said, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? 35 But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; in those days they will fast.” (Luke 5:34-35)
Fasting was revered by the Jews as an act of humility before God and was associated with prayer, lamentation and repentance. Jesus himself considered it important.
Even with this in mind, Jesus said, “Will you fast when the bridegroom is with you?”
The bridegroom is a reference to Jesus himself. After this, Jesus goes on to say, “No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins” (v. 38), likening the new way of life in him to new wine.
The Pharisees tried to enter the kingdom by keeping the rule of the law. But those who seek to live with Jesus Christ surrender themselves to the rule of God, which has already begun with the coming of Jesus.
It is not a matter of earning righteousness through one’s own efforts, but of believing in the forgiveness of sins through the righteousness of Jesus, which is given to us by the grace of God. We must sincerely repent of our sins, and surrender everything to the Lord Jesus.
This is where the joy of living with Jesus, the bridegroom, and new life begin. The Lord Jesus promised us, “I will be with you until the end of the world.” These words are a promise that the Lord, our bridegroom, will walk with us throughout our lives.
John wrote about the first miracle that Christ performed – turning water into the best wine for the wedding at Cana.
This miracle has many spiritual meanings. I believe that Jesus was actually saying that the joy and pleasure of the wedding that was taking place in front of his eyes should not be interrupted, but that the new wine, Jesus Christ, would continue that joy and pleasure.
In the book of Acts, people were surprised when the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples. The Japanese Bible says, “They are drunk with new wine” (2:13). They mistakenly thought that being filled with the Holy Spirit was being drunk with “new wine”.
In Solomon’s day, God said that He would give them “the ability to enjoy life”. These words have indeed come true through Jesus Christ the bridegroom, the new wine. We are now with Jesus the bridegroom and the Holy Spirit, who lives in us.
We know through God the Father why we were born and where we will go after we die. We are secure in this.
And God, who poured out His love to the full in the beginning and the end, has given us the presence of Jesus, the bridegroom, and the Holy Spirit to be our helper from our birth to our death. Therefore, I say to you. Our life is a life that deserves to be enjoyed.
We are still under COVID, so it may be inappropriate to talk about “fun”. However, I dare say, it is precisely at times like this that we should have enjoyment in Christ. Even in times like these, our God has given us the ability to enjoy life. Let’s pray.

８）神様は私達の始まりと終わりに愛を持って関わってくださっているお方です。花婿なるイエス様と聖霊様が、その始まりと終わりの間、すなわち今もこれからも私達と共にいてくださるということは、すなわち私達に喜びと楽しみを与えてくださるということです。あなたは神様から与えられている人生を楽しんでいますか。
