You do not have to be like Hanzawa Naoki

June 8, 2014

Last week, we talked about the Lord who illuminates our heart with light. We are confronted with various situations in our daily life. When Jesus shines his light upon us, we can identify the cause of problems. Jesus can also render his curing hands to help us deal with such problems. It meant that it was important to realize that the cause of such problems could be within us. Today, we would like to look at other aspects of our problems.

As I have pointed out last week, we tend to blame others too easily for our own problems. That means some other people are blamed for our misgivings for no legitimate reason. The Bible talks about a goat that was sacrificed to redeem for human sins. This goat was the origin of the expression “scapegoat” we use today. Scapegoating is to find an easy way out by blaming other innocent people for problems we should be responsible for. There are many such people victimized as scapegoats in this world. Perhaps some of you here had such unpleasant experience.

Today, I would like to talk about people caught in such unfair circumstances. These people are blamed for someone else’s problem and have to suffer the consequence. People encountering such situation tried to find some way to cope.

When I was in a junior high school, there was a TV drama series called “Hissatsu Shigoto-nin” in Japan. Fujita Makoto played the part of Nakamura Mondo, Yamasaki Tsutomu played Nembutsu No Tetsu, and Yamada Isuzu played Shamisen-ya No Oriku. These characters live as ordinary citizen in Edo era. But, when people ask to revenge for injustice they received, these assassins-for-hire would go out and kill the culprits. Yes, these are assassins whose job is to carry out revenge on behalf of people who suffered great injustice. The evil are punished with death. This was a long-running series. It was a very popular TV drama series. A similar scheme is carried into another TV drama series that was very popular last year in Japan.

Last year, the most popular drama series was about “Hanzawa Naoki” character. Each episode of this series had a similar and simple plot. Namely, this Hanzawa Naoki, a banker, is put in a bind by his superiors. He is made a scapegoat for deeds he did not commit. But, rather than succumbing to such unfair treatment, Hanzawa fights back, exposes the dark side of the large organization, and clears his name.

Hissatsu Shigotonin and Hanzawa share the same scheme. That is when treated unjustly, these people retaliate and retaliate decisively. Everyone watching these TV drama felt that these characters were doing what they wanted to do themselves against unfair treatments they received. I am sure many of you felt that these TV characters were fighting back against people in power who were abusing their positions. They were fighting on behalf of the oppressed of the society. That is the reason for amazing popularity of such TV drama series.

When we face a situation in which we are unjustly attacked or blamed for something we did not do, what are we to do? It might be easier to find the reason for problems within ourselves. Such problem is within us, and the solution can be found within us.  But, what I am talking about this morning is different. In these situations, the problems were caused by someone else and they are not within our control. They are beyond our realms. What are we to do when we face such problems?

Let me talk first about the one who pays back for the evil of the world.

One who pays back for the wrong.

What are we to do? Hire the Shigoto-nin? Or fight back forcefully like Hanzawa Naoki?

What does the Bible say? The book of Proverbs we are studying says: Do not say, “I’ll pay you back for this wrong!” Wait for the Lord, and he will avenge you. (Proverbs 20:22)

When we look at the world around us today, we sometimes feel that we are still living in the world of the Old Testament. We still live in the world of “Eye for Eye, and Tooth for Tooth.” The book of Leviticus says: Anyone who injures their neighbor is to be injured in the same manner:fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth. The one who has inflicted the injury must suffer the same injury. (Leviticus 24:19-20)

This was the law that was mentioned in the Old Testament, Code of Hammurabi, Assyrian law, Babylonian law, and Persian law. Such law was widely accepted in ancient Middle East. The spirit of this law was to prevent excessive retaliation. It suggested that people should be repaid for what they lost, but not more.

Of course, we should not turn blind eyes to the evil and injustice. We should not condone such things. We should strive to eliminate injustice from our society. But, the Bible tells us:Do not say, “I’ll pay you back for this wrong!” Wait for the Lord, and he will avenge you.

Book of Galatians tells us that whatever we sow, we must reap them later.

Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. (Galatians 6:7-9)

Whatever we do, or did, whether they are good or evil, we must reap the consequences of what we have sowed.  We cannot let others reap the consequences of our deeds. No one else can force us to reap what we sow. We all must eventually reap what we sowed. The book of Galatians tells us that God knows everything about us. This God tells us that whatever we have sown, whether good or bad, there will come a time when we must reap the harvest. One thing we must remember is that God will be the ultimate one who would reap what we have sown. So, we should not reap everything ourselves. In that sense, we need not be Hanzawa Naoki, or we do not have to hire Hissatsu Shigoto-nin. Even if we do not resort to their help, God will help us eventually.

And this is going to save us. Jesus once said: “all who draw the sword will die by the sword.” (Matthew 26:52) Our urge to right the wrong could become urge to revenge. When we get into that mentality, we cannot stop at “Eye for Eye”, but we want not only “eye” but also the right arm, too. That is our human nature. If you try to fight sword with sword, you will die by the sword. If we continue to revenge and seek for eye for eye and tooth for tooth, people would fight back and take our arms and legs, too. Chain of violence. If we fight violence with violence, we will suffer the consequence of violence. The Bible warns us not to go that way. It tells us to leave room for God to intervene.

David, the second king of Israel had many enemies. He faced many difficulties. His life and his throne were threatened many times at hands of evil plots. In those moments, King David offered the following prayer to God:

1Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken. How long will you assault me? Would all of you throw me down— this leaning wall, this tottering fence? Surely they intend to topple me from my lofty place; they take delight in lies. With their mouths they bless, but in their hearts they curse. Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge. Surely the lowborn are but a breath, the highborn are but a lie. If weighed on a balance, they are nothing; together they are only a breath. 10 Do not trust in extortion or put vain hope in stolen goods; though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them. 11 One thing God has spoken, two things I have heard: “Power belongs to you, God, 12 and with you, Lord, is unfailing love”; and, “You reward everyone according to what they have done.” (Psalm 62:1-12)

God rewards everyone according to what they have done. So, we do not have to do what God will take care of. We should not try to render justice to others ourselves. We should leave to God what God does. God is our rock, salvation, and fortress. We would not be shaken. We should follow David, and wait for God, trust in God, and we should pour our heart in front of God. Paul also talked about the faith of David this way:

19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 On the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. (Romans 12:19-21)

So, we confirmed that God is the one who would avenge. Knowing that, how should we live our daily life?

Let me move to the next point: Live holding our head high.

Live holding our head high

Last week, we talked about Adam and Eve. When Adam was asked about the forbidden fruit by God, Adam said:“The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.” (Genesis 3:12) Eve must have overheard these words. It must have been shocking to her. This incident could have cast a long shadow on their marriage. Later, this couple was blessed with two children. The Bible describes what happened to them:

1Adam made love to his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, “With the help of the Lord I have brought forth a man.” Later she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast. Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.” Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.” While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. (Genesis 4:1-8)

Both Cain and Abel brought offerings to the Lord. Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. Abel offered to the Lord fat portions from some of the first born of his flock. But, the Lord did not look kindly to what Cain offered. Perhaps, while what Able offered were portions from the firstborn of his flock, Cain could have brought some of the leftovers from his collection of fruits. It was Cain’s problem that the Lord liked what Abel offered more than what Cain offered. But, Cain got angry at this brother Abel and kills the brother. Cain made the same mistake that his parents once made. He passed the blame to others. This generates a chain of sins.

To this Cain, the Lord said:  “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.” (Genesis 4:6-7)

As I said last week, we should ask the Lord, our doctor, to shine light into our heart to identify the cause of problem. And, once we realize the truth, we should ask the Lord, our doctor, to restore our heart. But, if our actions are justified in the eyes of the Lord, he tells us to lift up our head. The Lord tells us not to downcast our face if we have nothing to be ashamed of. He tells us to lift up our head high. When God shines his light into our heart and we are found blameless, we should lift our head high even if some people in the society should blame you for their deeds.

But, be aware that the sin is crouching at your door. Sins always approach us to tempt us. We must learn selfcontrol. What sins are we talking about? Uncontrollable anger and hatred, and urge to force your own version of justice to innocent brother. Such temptation was crouching at Cain’s door. It was up to Cain to decide whether to open the door and let the sin walk into his heart. Unfortunately, Cain ignored such warning and took his brother to field and murdered him.

Book of Hebrews says: Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. (Hebrews 12:1)

This sin that entangles us was the raging anger of Cain against his brother. Sin was crouching at his door. There was a strong urge to retaliate: eye for eye and tooth for tooth, and more. But, Paul tells us that we should throw off such sin that entangles us and run the race marked out for us with perseverance.

After Jesus Christ returned to heaven, his disciples spread the good news to the world risking their lives. At one occasion they were forced to face the assembly of the elders. But whatever the situation the disciples faced, they believed in themselves and were not shaken, and spoke their mind. Chapter 5 of the Acts records one episode.

The disciples were brought to the assembly of the elders and spoke openly about Jesus Christ. Those who heard this were furious with anger and tried to kill the disciples. At that moment, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of law, stood up, and ordered the apostles to be sent outside for a moment. Then Gamaliel said:

”Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.” (Acts 5:38-39)

When the people heard this, what did the people do? 40 His speech persuaded them. They called the apostles in and had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. 41 The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name.42 Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Messiah. (Acts 5:40-42)

Although the people were still agitated, they listened to Gamaliel, called the apostles back in, had them flogged, and let them go after ordering them not to speak in the name of Jesus. The apostles rejoiced because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name of Jesus. And, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Messiah.

Brothers and sisters. I am much younger than most of you here. My life experience is short. But, I have observed people who self-destroyed because of their greed. I have seen the fate of those who decided to become enemy of the God. I have to tell you frankly, that I have experienced my share of hardships. Perhaps you have experienced, and seen, such hard days yourself. Why do we destroy ourselves by stepping into the realm of God, and turn our back to God?

Earlier, I quoted words from Hebrews in which Paul told us that we should throw down sins that entangle us and run the race given to us with perseverance. Paul said:  [Let us run] fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.  (Hebrew 12:2)

Many of you assembled here believe that God does exist. If so, we should take the words of Gamaliel into our hearts, lift our head high, and run our race fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and the perfecter of faith.

Paul and other apostles of Jesus had to face persecutions from all corners. But, even when they faced hardships in their mission, they did not retaliate the persecutors. No, they simply continued to talk about the good news of Jesus. These disciples were flogged and were told not to talk about Jesus any more. But, rather than plotting to retaliate and pay back, they continued to speak about Jesus earnestly. They were threatened and flogged. But the disciples did not try to remember the faces of those floggers in order to revenge later. No, the disciples kept their heads high, walked with the Lord Jesus, and spread the good news about Jesus to the world. When we live looking up at Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith, we cannot waste our precious time to think about revenge. We know that we are given only limited time to live on the earth, and also know how precious the task we are privileged to carry out.

Think for a moment that you are going to Disneyland with the family. The park opens at 9 and closed at 8 at night. You have only 11 hours to enjoy the park. Since it is summer time, the peak season, the lines would be long to get to any attractions. With so many people on the park you could not get to all of the rides and attractions within given 11 hours.

Suppose, further, that you joined a long line to buy hamburgers and juice for your children who are starving. A passerby bumps into you and the BBQ source spills onto your pants. And, this passerby is walking away without even saying “Sorry.” Would you catch up with this individual, take him to the park office and engage in a shouting match for hours? If the incident happened at 2 p.m., and you finally left the park office at 7:40 p.m., while your children were left waiting for you, you have only 20 minutes left to enjoy the park.

Similarly, we have only limited time in our life. There are many things we must do. What is the value of being consumed with a thought of retaliating to others? Your mind would be tormented and would be filled with burning sense of revenge. Would you like to spend your precious time in that way? What do you expect to get out of that?

Traditionally, Japanese were expected to revenge against anyone who took life of your parent. It was considered to be a virtue.  For that reason, some spend their entire life waiting to retaliate far more severely than what others had done to your family earlier. The story of Chushingura is shown again and again at the end of the year on TV. Many people in Japan end the year watching these warriors revenging the killer of their master and then committing mass-suicide.

To leave everything to Lord is not to condone anything. We leave everything in the hands of almighty God, and we live holding our heads high. Some of the time, our world looks unfair. Righteous are not rewarded and the evil live like kings. But, God will eventually reward our deeds rightly.  Finally, let me conclude today’s talk with three readings from the Proverbs.

17 Do not let your heart envy sinners, but always be zealous for the fear of the Lord. 18 There is surely a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off. (Proverbs 23:17-18)

My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity. Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.  7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones. (Proverbs 3:1-8)

All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord. Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans. (Proverbs 16:2-3)

May we never waste away our precious life trying to take over the role of God. May we trust in the one who would reward us. May we not try to doubt what God has planned for us. May we not go astray and waste away precious time given to us. Brothers and sisters in the Lord, let us run the course focusing our eyes to Jesus who is the pioneer and the perfecter of faith.Let us pray.
