イエス・キリストのはたらきが記してあります福音書を読んでいてすぐに気がつくことがあります。それはイエス様がきわめて現実的なお方であったということです。そうでしょう、若い時から大工として働き、雇われたり、雇ったり、仕事を請け負い、それに伴う諸々の現実的なことに向き合ってこられたのですから。そして、そのイエス様が地に足をつけて見聞きしたことから神の国について、神のはたらきについて語っているのがイエス様の語られた譬話なのです。イエス様が日常の出来事から神の国、神のはたらきについて語ったということは、私達の日常の出来事は神の国、神のはたらきにつながっているということです。私達の日常と神のはたらきは断絶しているものではなくて、私達が信仰生活を全うしようとするならばこの世界から離れることはできないということです。

地に足をつけて
箴言６章１節－５節

1わが子よ、あなたがもし隣り人のために保証人となり、他人のために手をうって誓ったならば、2もしあなたのくちびるの言葉によって、わなにかかり、あなたの口の言葉によって捕えられたならば、3わが子よ、その時はこうして、おのれを救え、あなたは隣り人の手に陥ったのだから。急いで行って、隣り人にひたすら求めよ。4あなたの目を眠らせず、あなたのまぶたを、まどろませず、5かもしかが、かりゅうどの手からのがれるように、鳥が鳥を取る者の手からのがれるように、おのれを救え（箴言６章１節－５節）。
読んですぐにお気づきのように今日の箴言の言葉には「保証人」という人が出てきます。保証人とはどんな人かということになりますと色々あると思いますが、一般的に保証人とは誰かを保証する立場の人で、もしその保証している人に何かの負債が生じ、それが返済できない場合は、保証人はその人に代わってその負債を返済しなければなりません。
この箴言に記されていることは、ある人が隣人のために誓って保証人となったということです。しかし、そのことにより彼は罠にかかりました。この文書を読む限り、その人はその隣人に騙されてしまったようです。
そして、この事態に対してこの箴言を書きましたソロモンはすかさずこう言いました「3わが子よ、その時はこうして、おのれを救え、あなたは隣り人の手に陥ったのだから。急いで行って、隣り人にひたすら求めよ。4あなたの目を眠らせず、あなたのまぶたを、まどろませず、5かもしかが、かりゅうどの手からのがれるように、鳥が鳥を取る者の手からのがれるように、おのれを救え」（箴言６章１節－５節）。
ここに記されている対処法はすぐにその隣人のもとに行き、今まさに陥りそうになっている、その罠から逃れるためにあらゆる努力をせよというものです。何がなんでもこの難から逃れなさいということです。
このような言葉が聖書に記されていることに私達は驚くかもしれません。どちらかというと聖書は「騙すよりは騙されたほうがいい」ということに着目しているように思えますし、「負債に困っている人は自分を犠牲にしてまでも助けてやるべきだ」というように私達は聖書のメッセージを受けがちだからです。それではこの箴言の真意は何なのか。今日はこのあたりを中心に二つの福音書からいくつかのことを見てまいりましょう。まず、最初に見ていきたいことは「地に足をつける」ということです。
地に足をつける
私達が信仰を持つということは、浮世離れした、世の中とは無関係というような生き方を選ぶということではありません。生き馬の目を抜くようなこの世の中で、与えられている信仰をもって生きていくということです。信仰とは何でしょうか。見えないものを見るかのようにして生きること、その通りでありましょう。しかし、それは妄想や夢想の中を生きるということではなくて、この世界で信仰を持って、地に足をつけて堅実に、着実に生きるということです。
もっと言いますと信仰をもってこの世界を生きるとは信仰を持つ前よりもさらにこの世界をリアルに観察し、特に「人間」に関して言えば、その本質について聖書は多くのことを記しているのですから、ナイーブになることなくしっかりと人間と向き合って生きるということです。かといってその現実に振り回されてしまうのではなくて、目には見えないけれども主が私達と共におられ、確かに主もこのことに関与しておられ、私達がなすべきことを示してくださるということを、しっかりと心に留めて日々を過ごすことです。

28あなたがたのうちで、だれかが邸宅を建てようと思うなら、それを仕上げるのに足りるだけの金を持っているかどうかを見るため、まず、座ってその費用を計算しないだろうか。29そうしないと、土台をすえただけで完成することができず、見ているみんなの人が、30『あの人は建てかけたが、仕上げができなかった』と言ってあざ笑うようになろう。31また、どんな王でも、ほかの王と戦いを交えるために出て行く場合には、まず座して、こちらの一万人をもって、二万人を率いて向かって来る敵に対抗できるかどうか、考えてみないだろうか。32もし自分の力にあまれば、敵がまだ遠くにいるうちに、使者を送って、和を求めるであろう（ルカ１４章２８節－３２節）。
なんと実際的な譬でしょうか。まだ形のない邸宅を最終的に完成させるのは信仰、まだ戦っていない敵と戦い、最終的に勝利するのも信仰です。どちらもその時点ではどうなるのか分からないのですから、そこには信仰が伴います。しかし、イエス様は言われたのです。『あなたがたのうちで、だれかが邸宅を建てようと思うなら、それを仕上げるのに足りるだけの金を持っているかどうかを見るため、まず、すわってその費用を計算しないだろうか』（２８）。
『また、どんな王でも、ほかの王と戦いを交えるために出て行く場合には、まず座して、こちらの一万人をもって、二万人を率いて向かって来る敵に対抗できるかどうか、考えて見ないだろうか』（３１）。
イエス様は現実的な方でした。イエス様ご自身、この世界の現実のただ中に生きたからです。明らかにこの邸宅の譬はご自身が大工としてはたらかれる時に何度も経験したことがもとになっていることでしょう。見積もりをしっかり取って、それを顧客に伝え、それを理解してもらい、同時にご自身もそこから収益を得なければなりません。これをしなければ工事は途中で頓挫してしまいます。そして、その影響は自分のみならず、この工事に関わる全ての人達におよぶのです。
またどんな王でも他の王と戦うのなら、まず座して、すなわちじっくりと時間をかけてこちらの兵力であちらの兵力と戦いうるのかということを考えないだろうかというのです。ここにはこちらは一万、あちらは二万とありますから、この人数の不利を補うことができ、さらに勝利することができるような戦略を自分はもっているだろうか、もし、持っているのならこの戦を受けよう、しかし、そうでないのならこの戦は避けなければならない。この戦の結果如何によっては兵士とその家族に対して、全ての国民に対して多くの犠牲を払うことになるでしょうから。
わたしはこれまで信仰という名のもとに、人の思いを超えた神様のはたらきをいくつも見てきましたし、体験してきました。それは申し分なく驚くべき神のみわざでした。しかし、同時に「信仰をもって！」と言いつつも、その計画が頓挫してしまったというものも数多く見てきましたし、自分も体験してきました。振り返ってみて、それらから学んだことは、それらの多くはその動機と目的が定かではなく、しっかりと座って祈り、考え、主の御心だということに立って決められたものではなかったということでした。
神様は私達の思い描いていることにいつもゴーを出すお方ではありません。不完全な私達が考えることがいつも神様の了解を得ることはありえないのです。しかし、その神様の御心を見過ごしたり、謙虚に受け止めずに強引にしますと、私達は土台をすえただけで、完成にいたることがない中途半端なものものを生み出し、それが本人のみならず、関わっている人全体に混乱を与えることになります。主にある兄弟姉妹、それゆえに私達は地に足をつけて、しっかりと考え、座して祈り、主の御心だということを確信して、信仰をもって前に進み出なければなりません。二つ目のことをお話します。それは「イエスに従う」ということです。
イエスに従う
この「邸宅と軍隊」の譬は大切なことを私達に問いかけています。この譬は私達が「イエス様に従う」ということをどのように選択するかを語っているものだからです。
人が人の感情を高ぶらせることはそんなに難しいことではありません。特別な雰囲気を作り出したり、現生利益につながる話は人の心を熱狂させます。これは信仰の世界でも言えることです。このことに対しても私はこれまで熱狂的な思いと共に信仰生活を始めていった人達を何人も見てきました。しかし、残念なことに、その全ての人が今、教会にとどまっていません。中には信仰を失ってしまわれた方もいます。
イエス様は人の気持ちを高ぶらせることによってご自身に従う者をおこすことはなさりませんでした。このことは一貫していました。かえって自分の後についてくる民衆の心が熱狂的になってくると、決まってイエス様は彼らの前から姿を消し、寂しいところに行かれ、祈られたと聖書は記しています。熱狂的に自分のもとに来る１００人よりも、１人の人がしっかりイエス様の話を聞き、その話の内容に自分自身を置き、よくよく吟味しイエスに従ってくることをイエス様は求めていたのです。
この譬が導いていることもそのことです。イエス様に従うにあたり、まずはしっかりとそのことを考えなさいということです。自分の心の机の上に「これまでの自分の生き方」を全て並べてみて、その横に「これから主と共に歩む生き方」ということ全て並べてみて、どちらが自分の残りの人生にとって大切なのかを比較してみてごらんなさいということです。イエス様が使われている商売用語で言いますのなら、どちらが採算がとれるのか、計算をしてみなさいということです。
また自分が「これまで直面した問題に対する自分なりの対処法」と「イエス様がこれから与えてくださる問題に対する対処法」とを比べてみて、じっくりと考えてみなさいということです。イエス様が使われている軍隊用語を用いますならば、どちらがその問題に対して「対抗できるか」ということを考えてみなさいということです。
そして、これらのことにおいてイエス様に従うということが自分にとって最善の生き方なのだということを納得したのなら、その確信にとどまり、その人生を完成させ、その人生に勝利をとるべく私に従ってきなさいということです。主にある兄弟姉妹、いかがでしょうか、もう一度、私達はこのことを確認してみませんか。またキリストと共に生きるということをお考えの方、このことをじっくりと試算してみませんか。三つめのことをお話します。それは「世に遣わされる私達」ということです。
世に遣わされる私達
イエス様に従って生きていくということを決意した後は、浮世を離れて私と共に歩みなさいとこのお方は言っていません。それ以降、主イエスと共に歩む人生はこの世のただ中で主と共に生きていくということなのです。イエス様はかつてこのようなことを語られました。
『16わたしがあなたがたをつかわすのは、羊をおおかみの中に送るようなものである。だから、へびのように賢く、はとのように素直であれ。17人々に注意しなさい。彼らはあなたがたを衆議所に引き渡し、会堂でむち打つであろう。18またあなたがたは、わたしのために長官たちや王たちの前に引き出されるであろう。それは、彼らと異邦人とに対してあかしをするためである』（マタイ１０章１６節－１８節）。
イエス様は弟子達に向かい、あなたたちを世に送るというのです。その現実を知っているイエス様はそれはあたかも「羊をおおかみの中に送る」ようなものだというのです。これは強烈な表現です。普通に考えれば羊が狼の餌食になるかならないかは時間の問題だということになります。言うまでもない羊は自らの身を守るものを何も持ち合わせていないからです。
ここでいう「狼」とは今日でいう「狂犬」や「暴走車」ではないのです。１７節に「人々に注意しなさい」とあるように、その「狼」は私達と同じ「人間」なのです。人間が人間であるあなたたちを衆議所に引き出し、私達を鞭打つとイエス様は言われたのです。そのような世界に送るにあたり、イエス様が弟子達に伝えたアドバイスが「へびのように賢く、はとのように素直であれ」ということだったのです。
創世記３章１節に蛇がこのような説明と共に登場します。「さて主なる神が造られた野の生き物のうちで、蛇が最も狡猾であった」。この狡猾な蛇がアダムを、そしてイブを誘惑しました。この蛇が頭にあると「蛇のように賢く」と言っても、それは狡猾な、ずる賢い知恵をもったイメージをします。しかし、イエス様が言われた蛇の賢さとは「分別がある、思慮深い」ということです。
蛇は大地に腹をつけて生きています。まさしくその様はこの世界にしっかりと身を置いているということであり、体全体で大地の変動を感知して、自分の周りの状況をしっかりと把握し、この世界の出来事を分別しています。「この世界の動向に目をとめるということ」をイエス様は「時のしるし」という言葉を使い、時代の動向を感知することの大切さを教えられました。
『1パリサイ人とサドカイ人とが近寄ってきて、イエスを試み、天からのしるしを見せてもらいたいと言った。2イエスは彼らに言われた、「あなたがたは夕方になると、『空がまっかだから、晴だ』と言い、3また明け方には『空が曇ってまっかだから、きょうは荒れだ』と言う。あなたがたは空の模様を見分けることを知りながら、時のしるしを見分けることができないのか』（マタイ１６章１節－３節）。
イエス様はこの世に私達を遣わすにあたり、しっかりとこの地に足をつき、この世界の動向をしっかりと見極め、思慮深く、分別をもって物事に向き合いなさいというのです。そもそもイエス様の言葉は自らの身を守ることのできない羊が狼の中に送られるということなのですから、私達には勝ち目はないのです。しかし、もしその所で私達ができることがあるとしたら、それは私達に襲いかかってくる狼に対して、冷静にその状況を判断する蛇のような賢さなのです。そして、その状況を見極めるという、その中心にあることは慌てず騒がずに、その状況の中で神様は自分に何を示しておられるのかということを判別する思慮深さです。
またそれに加えて｢鳩のような素直さ」が私達に求められています。イエス様の時代、鳩は神への捧げ物として用いられました。それゆえに、鳩には混じりけのないきよさ、純粋さ、素直さが求められました。すなわち、それは人に対する素直さというよりも神様に対して、どれだけ私達が純粋に信頼しているかということです。賢くその状況を判断し、神様の御心を探り、同時にその主の御心に対してこちらの心が従順であるのかということです。
そして、この蛇の賢さ、鳩の素直さの本当の意味が分かるのは、これらの言葉の直後に続くイエス様の言葉なのです。『19彼らがあなたがたを引き渡したとき、何をどう言おうかと心配しないがよい。言うべきことは、その時に授けられるからである。20語る者は、あなたがたではなく、あなたがたの中にあって語る父の霊である』（マタイ１０章１９節ー２０節）。ここで明らかなのは私達が置かれている状況を思慮深く判断し、さらにその状況に神様がどのように働かれているかを知り、知るのみならず、鳩の素直さと共にそれを受け入れて、その神様のはたらきに従うことが大切なのだということです。
皆さん、私達は世から隔離して生きるのではありません。教会にいる時間がイコール、クリスチャンライフではないのです。私達が暮らす所、生計をたてるところ、学ぶところ、そこに生きることがクリスチャンライフです。そして、そのところで私達はしっかりと地に足をつけてこの世界を生きるのです。
先ほどイエス様の譬から「これまで直面した問題に対する自分なりの対処法」と「イエス様が与えてくださる対処法」とを比べてみて、じっくりと考えてみなさいということをお話しました。私もあらためて同じことをしてみました。でも、途中でやめました。もう、最初からはっきりとしているからです。明らかに主と共に生きていくということのほうが、私にはそのベニフィットが圧倒的に多いのです。
あのパウロも同じように過去の自分の人生とイエスに従うということの採算を考えたのでしょう。そして、その結果をローマ書８章で言っています。『31それでは、これらの事について、なんと言おうか。もし、神がわたしたちの味方であるなら、だれがわたしたちに敵し得ようか。32ご自身の御子をさえ惜しまないで、わたしたちすべての者のために死に渡されたかたが、どうして、御子のみならず万物をも賜わらないことがあろうか。33だれが、神の選ばれた者たちを訴えるのか。神は彼らを義とされるのである。34だれが、わたしたちを罪に定めるのか。キリスト・イエスは、死んで、否、よみがえって、神の右に座し、また、わたしたちのためにとりなして下さるのである。35だれが、キリストの愛からわたしたちを離れさせるのか。患難か、苦悩か、迫害か、飢えか、裸か、危難か、剣か。36「わたしたちはあなたのために終日、死に定められており、ほふられる羊のように見られている」と書いてあるとおりである。37しかし、わたしたちを愛して下さったかたによって、わたしたちは、これらすべての事において勝ち得て余りがある。38わたしは確信する。死も生も、天使も支配者も、現在のものも将来のものも、力あるものも、39高いものも深いものも、その他どんな被造物も、わたしたちの主キリスト・イエスにおける神の愛から、わたしたちを引き離すことはできないのである』（ローマ８章３１節－３９節）。
自分がこれから向き合おうであろう諸々の危機を想定し、しかしながらキリストの愛が自分と共にあるということを考えた時に、パウロは言いました。「わたしたちは、これらすべての事において勝ち得て余りがある」と。このような人生を私達は主イエスと共に歩むことができるのです。
皆さん、聖書は私達にこの現実世界に足をつけて生きるように勧めます。そこで私達はよく祈り、よく考え、主に従います。蛇のように諸々の出来事を察知し、主のはたらきを知る思慮深さを、またそのことを従順に信じ受け入れる鳩の素直さを、これらを持ち合わせて、私達人生をかけるに値するお方と私達は今日も明日も生きていくのです。お祈りしましょう。
Stand still
Proverbs, chapter 6:1-5

My son, if you become surety for your friend, if you have shaken hands in pledge for a stranger, 2 You are snared by the words of your mouth; You are taken by the words of your mouth. 3 So do this, my son, and deliver yourself; For you have come into the hand of your friend; Go and humble yourself; Plead with your friend. 4 Give no sleep to your eyes, Nor slumber to your eyelids 5 Deliver yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, And like a bird from the hand of the fowler. (Proverbs 6:1-5)
As we read the scriptures, you find a word “surety”. What is surety? There are more than a couple of definition for surety. In general, surety means someone who co-sign a loan for someone or guarantee the debt of someone.
If the person could not pay for a loan or the debt, the co-signer must pay for it for the person. We see a person who became a surety for his friend in this scripture. And he was trapped by it. As long as we read this scripture, this person seemed to be cheated by his friend.
Solomon, the author of this book of proverbs wrote what he must do for this situation in chapter 6, verse 3 to 5. “3 So do this, my son, and deliver yourself; For you have come into the hand of your friend: Go and humble yourself; Plead with your friend. 4 Give no sleep to your eyes, Nor slumber to your eyelids. 5 Deliver yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, And like a bird from the hand of the fowler.”(Proverbs 6:1-5)
What he said in this scripture is to go this friend as soon as possible, and try every effort to run away from this trap, that he is about to be trapped. Some of you might be surprised to find those sentences in the bible. We rather think the Bible is teaching us like “it is better to be cheated than to cheat”, or like “we should help people who are in trouble even by sacrificing ourselves.”
Then, what is the true message of this scripture in the Bible? Let’s dive into deeper meaning of the scriptures. First, I talk about “Stand still”.
Stand still
Having faith does not mean that we choose the life that has nothing to do with this world, not totally separated from the earth, but choose the life to live by faith in this carnal world. We choose the life by seeing this world with spiritual eyes in faith which is able to see invisible spiritual world. Having faith means that we choose the life to live in faith by standing still, boldly.
Having faith in this world means we become more sensitive to watch this world, watch human beings with the eyes of the Holy Spirit to figure out the biblical truth among us in this world. It does not mean we get involved in this world no matter what, but we stand still in faith by focusing on our Lord who is always with us and always guide us.
Soon as we read the book of Gospel, we notice something about Jesus. How practical Jesus is. No wonder, if we think about his biography from a human being aspect. He was working as a carpenter, sometimes he was hired, sometimes he hired somebody. Sometimes he got orders from his customers.
He was facing a lot of practical matters along with his business every day. And this our Lord Jesus, he preached people about the kingdom of God and gospel of God by using his experiences that he got by standing still at God’s side in this real world. He mentioned about the kingdom of God by using his experiences in his daily life in this world, means our daily life is linked to the kingdom of God. Let’s read Luke chapter 14, now.
“28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it- 29 “lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, 30 “saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’31”Or what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? 32 “Or else, while the other is still a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks conditions of peace.(Luke 14:28-32).
What a practical example it is! It is faith that we need to be able to complete a tower not build yet. It is faith we need to be able to win the battle against our enemy that has not started yet. We need faith at the point when they have not started yet, because we don’t know what will happen to us in the midst of those example. However, Jesus said, in Luke chapter 14 verse 28 and 31, 28“For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it – 31 “Or what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand?
Jesus was a realist. Jesus himself, he lived in the midst of this reality of our world. Obviously, the example of building a tower was based on his many experiences as a carpenter. He estimates a cost and tell the estimated cost to be approved. Of course, he should get profit from his work. Without these processes, it won’t complete successful. And it affects not only himself but also all of people involved in the project.
Also, Jesus questioned that “Does not any king take time to count military power of both side, of his kingdom and of his enemy’s to make strategy to win the battle. In this case of the Luke chapter14, it is said that “our side, we have 10,000 and their side, they have 20,000. The king in this case, the king needed to make a decision if he should fight or not by considering a strategy to be able to win with their limited resources. If it would not be possible to win, the king should avoid the war, instead he needed to seek conditions of peace. Otherwise, there will be huge damage towards his soldiers and their families and people all over his nation.
I have witnessed people and witnessed myself about God’s work far beyond our thought. They were absolutely amazing God’s work. However, at the same time, I also have been watching and experienced myself many failures of our projects that had started with faith. When looking back at those failures, I noticed that I had not had clear vision about their motivation and purpose. I did not sit down to pray to make sure if it is God’s will or not.
God does not say to us “go for it”about all of our planings. We are not able to get God’s approval all the time, because we are so imperfect. However, even if we don’t get God’s will or ignore God’s will, and just started on our way, it will never be well done, like he just finished foundation but never complete, that would give confusion not only to ourselves but also to all of the people who are involved. Therefore, brothers and sisters in Christ, we should make sure if it is God’s will or not by sitting down to pray for the Lord. Then we stand still in faith considering well in faith. And we step out in faith. Now, second thing, let’s talk about “to follow Jesus.”
Follow Jesus
These examples of “building a tower and military tactics” are asking a very important thing. Because these examples ask us how we should choose to follow Jesus.
To make people excited is not so difficult. We can make people excited by creating special atmospheres or telling them a profitable story. We could also say it happens as same as of the world of faith. I mean, I have been watching many people who had started to have their faith on fire, however, unfortunately, all of them who I know do not stay at a church anymore. There are also some people who even lost their faith.
Jesus did not make people follow him by getting them excited. He never did. According to the Bible, when people got too excited, Jesus always stayed away from them, went to a quiet place where he could pray. I guess He rather wanted a follower who listen to Jesus very carefully, apply Jesus’s teaching for his life than one hundred excited followers.
This is also indicating to us how we should follow Jesus. To follow Jesus, we need to consider deep enough what the meaning of following Jesus is. It means we should lineup cards of “my old life style without following Jesus”, and other cards of “my new life style walking with Jesus” and compare them which is worthy for the rest of your life. If I quote what Jesus used, “sit down first and count the cost.” In another words, consider well which is better for you between your own old way to solve problems and Jesus way to solve problems. If I quote what Jesus said, “sit down first and consider well to be able to meet your problem.”
Then, if you understand following Jesus is the best way to live, stay in your faith to complete your life with victory in Him. What do you think about it, brothers and sisters? Don’t you want the life with Jesus? Don’t you want to consider of following Jesus carefully once again?
Third thing, it is about us to be sent in this world.
About us, to be sent in this world
After you made decision to live by following Jesus, you need to realize he did not say that we should part from this world. Our life with Jesus means we live by walking together with the Lord, Jesus in the midst of this world. In Matthew chapter 10, verse 16 to 18, Jesus said to his disciples; “Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. “But beware of men for they will deliver you up to council and scourge you in their synagogues. “You will be brought before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles. (Matthew 10:16-18)
Jesus said to his disciples that he is going to send them into this world. Jesus knows the reality of this world. That is why he mentioned it is just like he is sending a sheep in the midst of wolves. This is very strong expression. If you take it literally, it is a matter of time that the sheep will be eaten by wolves. Needless to say, the sheep has nothing to protect himself from the attacking wolves. Wolves in this context are not “mad dogs”, nor “runaway vehicles” today. As we see in the verse 17, Jesus said,”beware of men”, these wolves are human beings just the same as us. They will deliver you up to councils, and scourge you, that is what Jesus said. Jesus gave his disciples the advice, ”Be wise as serpents and harmless as doves” when sending them into such a world.
In Genesis chapter 3 verse 1, we see a serpent with an explanation like this, “Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made.” This serpent seduced Adam and Eve. If we remember the serpent in Genesis, we imagine the serpent as a very tricky one. However, in Matthew, Jesus meant to be wise and intelligent enough to discern happenings in this world.
Serpents live by putting their body on the ground. They put themselves firmly on this earth. They catch all of dynamic change of the earth with their whole body. They grab the situation around them to discern happenings of this world. Jesus said “Sign of the time” as an expression to observe this world trend” He taught his disciples the importance to observe world trend.
1Then the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and testing Him asked that He would show them a sign from heaven. He answered and said to them, “When it is evening you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red; 3 “and in the morning, ‘It will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and threatening. Hypocrites! You know how to discern the face of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of the times. (Matthew 16:1-3)
Jesus is teaching us to stand still on this earth to face this world’s changing with discernment. If we take Jesus’s example literally, as a sheep, we won’t be able to win against wolves. Then what can we do in this situation? We need to be wise as serpents who are able to observe the situation with a cool head. To be wise enough to be able to discern what God indicates in the situation without falling into panic.
In addition, we are required “to be harmless like a dove.” In the time of Jesus, Dove was used as burnt offering to God. Therefore, Dove should be a symbol of holy, pure, and harmless. In this case, not talking about harmless towards people but about how much we put ourselves by pure heart before God. We should be wise to understand the situation we are put, seeking for God’s will, and then we should obey to God’s calling by pure heart.
We can understand the true meaning of “wise as serpent and pure like dove”, by reading next scripture in verse 19 and 20 of Matthew chapter 10,
19“But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak; 20 “for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you. (Matthew 10:19-20)
From this passage, we can find out what Jesus taught; it is important for us to know deeper how God is working in a circumstance where we are put by pondering it deeply. Then accept God’s work by pure heart, harmless like dove to project the Holy Spirit dwelling in us.
Brothers and sisters, we are not living separated from this world. Christian life does not depend on how many hours we stay at the church. Wherever we are, wherever we live, wherever we learn, everywhere we live should be a Christian life. And wherever we are, we stand firm to be a Christian in this earth.
I talked about pondering how to live by comparing two ways, your own way or the way given by Jesus a few minutes ago. I also had tried to do that for myself too. However, I stop doing that after I stared. Because it is too obvious for me from the beginning which way is much better for me, to live by walking with the Lord.
I guess that Paul also was comparing and pondering his past life without Jesus and his new life to follow Jesus. And He concluded in Romans chapter 8, from 31 to 39.
31What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? 33 Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written: “For your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.” 37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:31-39)
After Paul estimated his risky situations in his near future, what would happen to him, he even said in his letter of Romans, “Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.”(Romans 8:37) Such a life, like Paul mentioned in Romans, we can live with Jesus.
Brothers and sisters, the bible is teaching us to live by standing still, behold in this real world. For that, we need to pray all the time, to ponder His word, then walk with the Lord. Being wise as a serpent, catching daily happenings in our real life to find out God’s calling in it. At the same time, being harmless like a dove, not against, but obedient towards God’s calling. With these stand points, we live with Him today and tomorrow by standing still, as He commands us “Be still, Behold.” Let’s Pray.

７）自分の心の机の上に「これまでの自分の生き方」と「これから主と共に歩む生き方」を並べてみましょう。「これまで直面した問題に対する自分なりの対処法」と「イエス様が与えてくださる対処法」を心の机の上の並べてみましょう。よくよく考えてみるときに、どちらが私達にとって益となることでしょうか。ローマ８章３１節－３９節でパウロはこのことについて何と言っていますか。
