もし、私達に理想的な生き方というものがあるとするのなら、このような生き方ではないかと思います。私達は自分の置かれている状況や環境を変えることによって、その状況や環境に何かを加えることによって、その状況や環境から何かを取り除くことによって、自分は幸いになれると思います。
しかし、私達が既に良く分かっているように、私達の人生は日々、シャッフルされるトランプのようなもので、一つのことが改善された、解決されたと思っている矢先に次の問題が降りかかって来るものです。願っていないカードが何度か続いて手元にやってくると私達は「不運だ」と言い、願っているものがめぐってくると「何とついているのだろう」と思います。私達はこのようなことをギャンブルと呼びます。私達の人生はギャンブルなのでしょうか。
この言葉はいつも喜び、絶えず祈り、全てのことに感謝するのですから、そのような状況や環境に支配されない言葉です。多くの方達はこの言葉を知っていると思います。そして、同時にこんな風に思っていらっしゃるかもしれません。そんな風に生きるのは不可能だ！と。

委ねることを教えるクリスマス

今年もクリスマスがめぐってきました。このシーズンには当然、教会ではクリスマスのメッセージが語られます。手元にあるのは一冊のバイブル、その中からクリスマスに関して記録されている聖書の言葉をお話しします。半年毎に新しいモデルが発売されているような携帯電話なら、その度ごとに新しい機能がつけ加えられていくことでしょう。しかし、聖書の内容がつけ加えられたり、減らされたりしたことはこれまでありません。
ですから牧師にとって、このシーズンは大きなチャレンジです。なぜなら、毎年、この限られたテキストの中からクリスマスメッセージを語るからです。クリスマス、イースターに関して、聖書からのメッセージを料理にたとえるならば、２０００年間、聖なる食材は全く変ることはなく、その食材から料理を作らなければなりません。
ですから今年も聖なる食材を前に何を語らせていただくべきが、頭を悩ましました。そうしながら、クリスマスの出来事を行きつめぐりつ思いめぐらしていると、やはり神様は今年もあることに気がつかせてくださいました。
クリスマスの中心は「飼い葉おけに寝かされているイエス・キリスト」です。そのことを思いめぐらしていましたところ、あることが心に迫ってきました。それは「委ねる」ということです。そこで、今日は「委ねることを教えるクリスマス」というタイトルでお話しさせていただきたく願っております。
私達は今でこそ年を重ねましたが、かつては誰しもが赤ちゃんでした。そう、母親の腕に抱かれる乳児です。その時のことを覚えている人はほとんどいないと思いますが、私達は今日（こんにち）、生まれたばかりの赤ちゃんが母親に抱かれている様を見ることができます。この教会でも見かける光景です。
成人した大人である私達は、何か特別な理由があったり、有名人でない限り、誰かの回りに人だかりを作ることはありません。しかし、赤ちゃんは言葉を話せない、自分で立ち上がることもできないのに、その回りに人を集める力をもっています。
人はお母さんの腕の中ですやすや眠っている赤ちゃんを見に来るのです。そんな光景を見ていて思わされますことは、赤ちゃんとは自らの身も心も完全に誰かに依存して生きている存在であるということです。彼、彼女が明日を生きながらえるか否かはすべて自分以外の人（多くの場合はその親）に委ねられているということです。言い換えれば、自分の命は自分以外の人に全く依存しているということです。言うまでもなく赤ちゃんは自らミルクを飲むことができませんし、ダイパーの取替え、保温などの適切なケアーがなければ簡単に病気になり、その命を失います。乳幼児の明日の命は完全に他者に委ねられているのです。
この場合、委ねられている側というのも、なかなか大変です。その子のために身の回りのことを全てしなければならないからです。子供が小さい時にはその子をカーシートに座らせ、ベルトをし、目的地に着きますと、またベルトを外し、カーシートから出し、ストローラを広げ、そこに入れ、またベルトをします。この年齢の子が二人、三人となり、これを何年も続けるということはなかなか大変なことです。
私達が子供の頃にはシートベルトの着用も、ストローラもなかったかもしれませんが、親達は私達をおんぶ紐で背中にしばったり（アメリカでは背中に縛るのは違反だと聞いております）、自転車の後ろに乗せ、育ててくれました。私達が今日こうしてあるのは、誰かが自分では生きていくことができない私達を諦めずに面倒を見てくれたからです。もし「もうやってられない」と、その人達が私たちのケアーを放棄していたならば、今、私たちはここにはいません。
イエス・キリストが肉体をもって赤子として生まれたこと、これを神学的に「受肉」といいますが、イエス・キリストが３０歳の成人としてこの世界に来られたのではなくて、赤子の姿をとって、この世界に来てくださったということはとてつもなくスゴイことです。なぜスゴイのか、クリスマスの出来事とは神の子であるキリストが人の姿となり生まれた、すなわち、ご自身の明日の命を全く、１００パーセント、人の手に委ねられたことだからです。
しかも、その委ねられた先のイエス・キリストの親となる夫婦はまだ年若く、当時の時代背景を思えば、彼らはまだティーンネージャーだったことでしょう、母マリアは親戚や近所から疑惑の目で見られるようにしてイエスを宿し、安心して出産できる場所すらなく、やっと見つかった場所は「ここだけは勘弁してくれ」というような場所で、誕生すればしたで、すぐにその命に刃が向けられているという状況、落ち着く暇もなくに他国に逃亡するような有様でした。
私たちは思います。もし、イエス様が赤子としてこの地上でお生まれになるということをスキップして３０歳を越えた成人としてこの地上にお姿を現すのなら、今、お話した諸々の面倒なこと、危機的なことは全て回避できました。しかし、あえてイエス・キリストは人として通るべきことを省略せずにその始まりから全ての人が通る道を歩まれたのです。
なぜでしょうか。皆さんはどう思われますか。私もこのことを黙想して過ごしました。そして、思わされたことはイエス・キリストの誕生と成長が「父なる神のみ手に委ねて生きる」という無言のメッセージを私達に伝えるためだったのではないかということでした。
すなわち、イエス様が誰かに身を委ねて生きなければならない乳幼児であったということの背後には、イエス様の父母、ヨセフ、マリアももちろんそうですが、さらにその全てを見守っていらっしゃる父なる神への完全なる信頼がイエス様にはおありになったということであります。
そして、聖書をよくよく調べて分かることは、イエス様が実際に神様に委ねて生きたということは、その誕生の時だけのことを言うのではなくて、まさしくその後、親兄弟と共に暮らし、社会の厳しい現実の中で汗水流して働き、公にその宣教活動をし、自分には枕する場所もないと言われた時、群衆を前に彼らに与える食べ物が何もないというような時、すなわちその全生涯におよんだということであります。後にイエス様に一番、近く接していた１２弟子の一人であったペテロはペテロ第一の手紙２章２２節―２３節で、間近にその言動を見続けたイエス様の生き様をこう記しています。
「キリストは罪を犯さず、その口には偽りがなかった。ののしられても、ののしりかえさず、苦しめられても、おびやかすことをせず、正しいさばきをする方に一切を委ねておられた」。
一読すると、この言葉は罵られた時、苦しめられた時、おびやかされた時というようなある特別な状況の時にイエス様は神様に一切を委ねておられたと記しているように思えます。しかし、実際には、この言葉はイエス・キリストというお方の全生涯が父なる神様に全てを委ねて歩まれたものだったのだということを私達に示すものであります。なぜでしょうか。
私達が不当な取り扱いを受けたり、罵られたり、苦しめられる時に、私達は自らの正当性を主張します。ある意味、私達が一番、興奮し、状況如何では最も感情的になる瞬間です。私達は何があっても自分の正当性を主張し、そのために証拠をかき集めて、対処しようとします。
よくよく考えますと、このことこそが私達が神様に委ねるということにおいて、一番、難しいことです。裁判は見える損失のためだけにするのではなくて、自分の名誉のためにするのですということを聞くことがありますが、一切のさばきを父なる神様に委ねられたイエス様の生涯は、ご自身の潔白、正当性という、一番大切なものを一切神様に委ねたのですから、それは、まさしくその全生涯を父なる神様にお委ねしておられたということなのです。
イエス様の誕生は飼い葉おけの上に身を委ねることから始まり、その最後には十字架の上に同じように身を委ねることにより終わりました。イエス様の生き方は常に父なる神様にご自身をゆだねていくことによってなされました。自分が磔にされる十字架を自らが背負い歩まれたイエス様がその道すがら耳にした言葉はどんなものだったでしょうか。
そして、カルバリの丘に自ら運んだ十字架の上に、まさしくその十字架のかたちに自分の体を伸ばし、その十字架の上に身を横たえたのです。人は誰でもその時に、抵抗する自由があります。まさしく釘がその手に打ち込まれようとする時、それをはねのけようとする自由があります。しかし、イエス様はそのような抵抗をせず、一切を父なる神様に委ねられました。
飼い葉桶と十字架、そのどちらにも共通することは、今日の親達が誰一人として、わが子を寝かせる場所として飼葉桶を選ぶことがないように、今日、十字架という、背筋が凍るような場所に誰一人として、身を置くことなどは考えないのです。しかし、イエス・キリストはそのような環境、状態の中でも全て父なる神様に委ねて、わが身をそれらの上に横たえることをよしとされたのです。
手足を釘づけにされた十字架は天と地に垂直にたてられました。その十字架の上でイエス様は七つの言葉を言われましたが、その最後の言葉、すなわち神の一人子、イエス・キリストがこの地上で最後に言われたことは『父よ、わたしの霊をみ手にゆだねます』（ルカによる福音書２３章４６節）という、「委ねます」という言葉でありました。今までお話してきましたように、この最後の言葉がイエス・キリストというお方の人生、全てを要約した言葉となりました。そうです、イエス様の生涯はその誕生から死にいたるまで全てを父なる神様に委ねて歩まれた生涯だったのです。
私達はパウロが記した第一テサロニケ５章１６節‐１８節の言葉を知っています。『いつも喜んでいなさい。絶えず祈りなさい。すべての事について感謝しなさい。これがキリスト・イエスにあって、神があなたがたに求めておられることである』（テサロニケ第一の手紙５章１６節‐１８節）

パウロはとてもくどい人だったようです。今もそうであるように彼が生きた時代も「そんなことは無理だ！」という人達は大勢、いたのでしょう、彼らに向けてパウロは言われました。
『あなたがたは主にあっていつも喜びなさい。繰り返して言うが喜びなさい。あなたがたの寛容を、みんなの人に示しなさい。主は近い。何事も思いわずらってはならない。ただ、事ごとに感謝をもって祈りと願いとをささげ、あなたがたの求めるところを神に申し上げるがよい。そうすれば、人知ではとうてい測り知ることのできない神の平安が、あなたがたの心と思いとをキリスト・イエスにあって守るであろう』（ピリピ４章４節‐７節）
この言葉も基本的には先のテサロニケの手紙と同じ事を言っています。ここにも「いつも喜び、事ごとに感謝、祈りなさい」と書かれています。そして、そうするのなら「人知ではとうてい測り知ることのできない神の平安が、あなたがたの心と思いとをキリスト・イエスにあって守るであろう」というのです。このような生涯を送ることができたら何と幸いかと思います。
でも、皆さんご存知のように「よし、今日から喜び、感謝し、祈る毎日を送ることが出来るように努力しよう」と思われてもそれは無理だということを知っています。私達が帰宅して家のドアを開ける前に、私達の喜びや感謝を奪っていくものがあちらにも、こちらにもあるのが私達の世界です。
ですから、この二つの言葉に同じように記されている言葉に注目してください。それは、この二つの言葉に同じように「キリスト・イエスにあって」と書かれているということです。これらの喜び、感謝、祈りはキリスト・イエスにあって可能なのです。ではそのキリストはどんなお方でしたか。今日、お話してまいりましたように、キリストは父なる神に一切のことを委ねておられたお方でした。
大人たちが電車に乗り遅れてしまうと髪を振り乱してプラットホームを走っている時も、乳児が心身ともに一切を母の腕に委ねているゆえに平安に眠っていられるように、笑っていられるように、私達の状況と環境に支配されない喜びや感謝、祈りは父なる神に私達を委ねきることなくしてありえません。
先週はハバクク書から「義人は信仰によって生きる」ということをお話しました。委ねるということはいつも私達のこの信仰と共にあります。この二つは切り離すことができなく、いつもこの二つは共にあります。委ねるということはまだ、その直面している出来事の行く末を知らない時に成される私達の信仰だからです。このことを二つまとめて記しているのが詩篇３７篇５節、６節です。
『あなたの道を主に委ねよ。主に信頼せよ、主はそれをなしとげ、あなたの義を光のように明らかにし、あなたの正しいことを真昼のように明らかにされる』
イエス・キリストの生涯はまさしく十字架の死にいたるまで父なる神に従順に、全てを委ねて全うされました。あの時、カルバリの丘は確かに一時、闇に包まれましたが、すぐにその闇はあたらしい義の光によって覆われたのです。
あと二週間弱で新しい年がやってきます。皆さんの心の中に気にかかることがありますか。新しい一年も、私達の前には色々なカードが配られることでしょう。それをひっくり返しながら「俺はついている！」と間性をあげ、すぐにまたやってきたカードを見て「俺は最悪だ！」というようなギャンブルのような一年を過ごしますか。
それとも「あなたの道を主に委ね、主に信頼し、主の腕に抱かれているところからくる、人知をはるかに超えた平安」というものをその人生の中で体験することを望みますか。キリストの寝かされた飼い葉おけを思い起こしましょう。そこに込められている私達一人一人に対するキリストの無言のメッセージに心を向けましょう。お祈りしましょう。
Christmas that
teaches us how to Entrust

Christmas has come around again. And naturally during this
season the message of Christmas is told at church. What we have in hand is the
Bible, and from it we talk about what is recorded about Christmas. If it were a
cell phone, a new model would come out every six months, each time with a new
function. Yet, never has any content been added or taken away from the Bible.
This season is a big challenge for pastors. Why, because the
Christmas message we talk about comes from this limited amount of text every
year. If you were to compare Christmas and Easter messages of the Bible to
cooking, it’s like making food with the same ingredients-holy ingredients that
hasn’t changed for the last 2000 years.
So I was scratching my head again this year, thinking of
what to talk about with such holy ingredients. Yet, as I was thinking about the
events of Christmas, the Lord had showed me that there is indeed a message for
this year.
The core of Christmas is “Jesus Christ who laid in the
manger.” When I was thinking about this, the word “entrust” came to heart. So
that is why I’d like to talk about today’s message with the title, “Christmas
that teaches us how to entrust.”
Although we have aged, we were all once a baby; an infant in
a mother’s arms. Though most of you probably don’t remember the moment, we see
newborn babies in their mother’s arms today; a sight seen even in this church.
We who are adults do not crowd around someone unless there’s
a special reason or a famous person. However, babies have the power to attract
people even though they do not speak or stand by themselves.
People come to see a
baby sound asleep in a mother’s arms. When I see such a sight, I think
about how a baby is completely dependent both body and soul on someone to live.
Whether he or she can survive tomorrow is all dependent on someone other than
themselves (in most cases the parent). In other words, they completely entrust
their lives to someone other than themselves. Without a doubt, a baby cannot
dink milk or change diapers by itself, and would easily become sick and die if
they are not properly cared for such as insulation. An infant’s life is
completely entrusted to someone else.
In this case, being entrusted is quite difficult. That’s
because you have to look after and do everything for the child. When a child is
young, you have to put that child in a car seat, put on their seatbelt-and upon
arriving to the destination, take off their seatbelt, take them out of the car
seat, unfold the stroller, put them in, and put their seatbelt on. It can be
quite a challenge when you do this for a few years because you have two or
three children around the same age.
Although there may have not been seatbelts or strollers in
our days, our parents raised us with baby slings-strapping us onto their backs
and also putting us on the back of bicycles (though I hear strapping babies on
backs are illegal in the U.S.).
The reason why we are here today is because someone took care of us without
giving up. We would not be here now if those people who took care of us had
given up saying, “I can’t do this anymore.”
Jesus Christ coming into the world in flesh form as a baby
is theologically called, “Incarnation.” But Jesus Christ coming into the world
as a baby and not as an adult of thirty years is something amazing. Why is it
amazing you ask, it’s because He, the son of God, completely-hundred percent
entrusted his life in the hands of human by coming on earth in a form of a
human baby.
Moreover, the couple, soon to be parents who Jesus Christ
was entrusted to were still very young. Thinking about the historical
background of the time, they were probably still teenagers. Mother Mary
conceived Jesus under suspicious eyes of relatives and neighbors. There was no
place where she could relax and the place finally found made you want to say
“you’ve got to be kidding me.” And before they could even settle down, the
newborn’s life is threatened, causing them to flee to another country.
We wonder-if Jesus appeared on this Earth as a thirty year
old adult, skipping the birth as a human child, the trouble and crisis that we
just talked about could be avoided. Yet, Jesus Christ walked the path all
humans have to go through without omitting any of it.
Why, why do you think this is? I too meditated on this. And
it came to me that maybe the silent message behind Jesus Christ’s birth and
growth is telling us to “Live your life entrusted in the hands of God the
Father.”
In other words, Jesus once an infant and having to entrust
his life to someone else meant that he had complete trust in not only his
parents and brother, but God the Father who watched over everything.
And by examining the Bible very closely we understand that
not only did Jesus truly entrust his life in the hands of God at the time of
his birth, but even after, as he lived with his family, worked hard in a harsh
reality of society and publicly did missionary work. Even in those times where
he was told he did not have a place to rest and did not have any food for the
people before him; Jesus lived his whole life entrusted in the hands of God the
Father. Later, seeing Jesus’ speech and conduct up close, Peter, who was one of
the closest disciples of Jesus, writes about how Jesus lived his life in 1
Peter 2:22-23.
“He committed no sin,
and no deceit was found in his mouth.” When they hurled their insults at him,
he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he
entrusted himself to him who judges justly.
When reading through it once, it seems as if Jesus
completely trusts God only under special circumstances such as abuse, torture,
or menace. However, the truth is, these words show that the whole life of Jesus
Christ was entrusted entirely to God. Why is that?
When we are abused, tortured and subjected to unfair
treatment, we try to justify ourselves. In a sense, it is a moment when we
become agitated and most emotional. We try to counter by collecting evidence
and justifying ourselves no matter what.
When we think about it, this is the most difficult thing
when entrusting God. I once heard that court trials are not only done for
losses but for your own honor. Jesus entrusted God with all judgment, and the
most important thing, his life’s innocence and justification. This act truly
shows that he completely entrusted his life in the hands of God the Father.
Jesus’ life began by entrusting his life in a manger, and
ends similarly by surrendering himself on the cross. Jesus’ life was always
entrusted in God the Father. What were the words he heard along the way, as he
carried the cross he was to be crucified on, on his shoulders?
And on Mount
Calvary he laid on the
cross that he himself carried, stretching his body in a shape of a cross. At
that time, anyone has the freedom to resist. You can push the nail away as it
is about to be pierced through your hand. Yet Jesus did not resist; he
completely trusted God the Father.
One thing the manger and the cross have in common is that,
like no parent today would pick a manger to put their baby to sleep in, no one
is crucified on a spine-chilling place like the cross. Yet, even in such environment
and condition, Jesus Christ completely entrusted God the Father and allowed to
lay his life on those things.
The cross where his hands and feet were pierced was put up
perpendicular to heaven and earth. And on the cross Jesus said seven things. The
very last words God’s only son, Jesus Christ said on earth was “Father, into your hands I commit my
spirit” (Luke 23:46). As I have just spoken, these last words of Jesus
Christ were the words that summarized his whole life. Jesus’ entire life was
entrusted in God the Father, everything from birth to death.
We know the words of Paul in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18. “Rejoice always, pray continually, give
thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
(1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).
If there was an ideal way to live, I believe this would be
the way. We think that by changing the situation or environment we are
in, adding something to the situation or environment we are in or removing
something from the situation or environment we are in, we become happy.
However, as we know already, our daily life is like cards
being shuffled. Just when we think one thing is improved or resolved, another
problem comes along. When a few cards we do not wish for are dealt, we say “how
unfortunate,” and when cards we wish for are dealt, we say, ”how lucky.” We
call something like this gambling; so is our lives a gamble?
Yet because these words say to rejoice always, pray
continually and give thanks in all circumstances, these words are not
controlled by situations or environments as such. I’m sure many of you know
these words. And at the same time may be thinking, “it’s impossible to live
like that!”
Paul seems to be a very wordy person. As is it today, I’m
sure there were many people who said, “that’s impossible!” in Paul’s days. But
Paul said to them:
“Rejoice in the Lord
always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all.
The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by
prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the
peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and
your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:4-7).
These words basically say the same thing as Thessalonians
which we read earlier. Here too it says to “rejoice always and give thanks and
pray continually.” And it says that when we do this, “the peace of God, which
transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ
Jesus.” How blessed would it be to live such a life.
But as all of you are aware, even if we may think, “Ok, from
this day, I will strive to rejoice, give thanks and pray everyday,” we know
it’s impossible. When we get home, even before we open the front door, there
are many things that deprive us of our joy and thanksgiving; and this is the
world which we live in.
So please pay attention to the similarity in these two
passages. That is, the part in both passages that says, “in Christ Jesus.” Joy,
thanksgiving and prayer are only possible through Jesus Christ. So what was
Christ like? As I have been saying, Christ entrusted all to God the Father.
Even when adults run on the plat form with disheveled hair
because they are about to miss a train, we must trust God the Father; only then
will true joy, thanksgiving and prayer that will not be controlled by
circumstance and environment be possible. Like so, an infant is only able to
peacefully sleep or laugh with complete entrustment in its mother’s arms.
Last week we talked about how “a righteous man lives in
faith” from the book of Habakkuk. Commitment is always with our faith. We
cannot cut one off from the other, they are always together. Commitment is our
faith when we do not yet know the outcome of an event we are facing. Psalm
37:5-6 talks about them collectively:
“Commit your way to
the Lord; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteous reward
shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun.”
The life of Jesus Christ fulfilled all commitment to God the
Father through his obedience through the crucifixion and death on the cross. At
that time, darkness fell on Mount
Calvary, but soon the
darkness was covered in a new light of righteousness.
The New Year will come in a little over two weeks. Is there
anything that’s been weighting in on anyone’s hearts? The New Year will give us
a new set of cards. Would you like to spend a year of gambling, flipping over
cards shouting, “I’m lucky!” then flipping over others only to say “I’m
unlucky!”?
Or would you like to experience in your life, “the peace of
being in the Lord’s arms that transcends all understanding, which comes from
committing your way to the Lord and trusting in Him. Let us remember the manger
where Christ laid, and turn our thoughts to Christ’s unspoken message for each
one of us. Let us pray.

２）神の一人子なるイエス・キリストはなぜ３０歳の成人男子としてこの地上にあらわれなかったのでしょうか（それも可能でした）。なぜ、手間のかかる乳幼児からその生涯を始められたと思いますか。
３）ペテロ第一の手紙２章２２節―２３節には「キリストは罪を犯さず、その口には偽りがなかった。ののしられても、ののしりかえさず、苦しめられても、おびやかすことをせず、正しいさばきをする方に一切を委ねておられた」と書かれています。ののしられ、苦しめられている時に、あなたは応酬しないでいることができますか。これらのことについて全てを神様に一切委ねるということは、何を意味しますか。
４）『父よ、わたしの霊をみ手にゆだねます』（ルカによる福音書２３章４６節）というイエス様の十字架上の最後の言葉はイエス様の生涯がその誕生から十字架にいたるまで、全て一切を父なる神様に委ねられていたことを意味しています。あなたはイエス様の生涯のどんな場面にそのような姿を見ますか？
５）第一テサロニケ５章１６節‐１８節、ピリピ４章４節‐７節を読みましょう。ここに記されているように生きることは可能ですか。どちらにも共通する「キリスト・イエスにあって」という意味は何ですか。そのキリストはどんなお方であったかということを、今日はみてきましたか。
６）詩篇３７篇５節、６節には「委ねる」ことと「信じる」こととが記されています。委ねることと信じることはどのように互いに関連していますか。
