教会の不思議
“聖なる公同の教会を信ず”

「教会」というのは不思議な場所です。遊園地なら私達を惹きつけるような乗り物がありますし、レストランなら洋食や和食といったようなメニューがあり、目の前に希望する食事が運ばれてきます。しかし、教会の礼拝堂には椅子が並べられているだけで、乗り物はないし、ウエイターがメニューをもって回ってくるということもありません。ここは「同好会」というような、共通の興味を持つ人達が集う場所でもなく、あらゆる年代の、多種多様な生活背景をもつ人たちが集まってくるのです。
イエス・キリストはかつてご自身の先駆けとなって、荒野で活動していましたバプテスマのヨハネのもとにぞくぞくとやってくる群集に向かって、このような言葉を語りかけました。24「あなたがたは、何を見に荒野に出てきたのか。風に揺らぐ葦であるか。25では、何を見に出てきたのか。柔らかい着物をまとった人か。きらびやかに着かざって、ぜいたくに暮している人々なら、宮殿にいる。26では、何を見に出てきたのか。預言者か。そうだ、あなたがたに言うが、預言者以上の者である。（ルカ７章２４節‐２６節）
パスカルという人が「人間は考える葦である」と言いましたが、この言葉はこのイエス様の言葉を念頭に置いて言ったのではないかという人達がいます（詳細は落穂をごらんください）。すなわち、このイエス様の言葉が風にゆらゆらと揺れている葦のように、時代の流れとか、世論に揺れ動いているような人間のことを指していたことを受けて、パスカルはこの「葦」を「人」に譬えたというのです。
この時、イエス様は群集に向かい、ラクダの毛衣を着、きらびやかさには程遠くあり、時代の流れとか世論の動向などには全く動じずに、己が信じるものに目を留めて生きたヨハネをあなたたちは見、その話を聞くために、この荒野までやって来たのだろうと言ったのです。まさしく、あり余る情報と流行に右往左往させられ、「人は見た目が９割」という本がベストセラーになるような時代に生きる私達の心にも鋭く迫ってくる言葉です。
もし、イエス様が今日の私達に語りかけるのですなら「あなたたちが教会に来るのは流行を追いかけるためではないし、きらびやかなものを求めているからではないだろう」と言われるのではないでしょうか。そうではなくて「預言者どころではない、その預言者をも造られた神のもとに礼拝を捧げるべく、あなたたちは教会にやってきたのだろう」ということを語りかけるに違いありません。
そして、その教会で牧師は一冊の書物、すなわち聖書から、そこに記されている言葉を話します。聖書は飽きたから、何度も話しているから、この一年間は今年のベストセラーから話しますということはなく、牧師は触れることも、指差すこともできないお方について語り、聞く者達も目には見えない、そのお方に向かって祈り、賛美を捧げ、そしてそのお方がなしてくださっていることについて互いに語り合うのです。このような意味において、教会はとても不思議な場所であります。
私達は「使徒信条」を見てきておりますが、その信条の中に「聖なる公同の教会を信ず」という私達の信仰の告白があります。今日はその「聖なる公同の教会」ということについて、それを二つに分けてさらに教会の不思議についてお話したいと願っております。まず最初に教会について、それが「聖なる教会」であるということをお話しましょう。
聖なる教会
使徒信条で私達は「聖なる公同の教会」と唱えます。私達の教会が聖であるということは、どういうことなのでしょうか。教会の建物が聖なるものである、なぜなら「おきよめ」がなされているからということなのでしょうか。教会には品行方正な立派な人達が集まっているということなのでしょうか。いいえ、そういうことではありません。
私達は建物がきよいのだというような考えをもっておりませんし、建物をきよめるというようなことをしません。また教会も人の集まりであり、その教会は時に色々な問題を抱える場所だからです。教会がもつ神秘的な力により、この建物の敷居をくぐったらその人の人格とか気質がたちどころに素晴らしいものになるということはないのです。しかし、この使徒信条はそんな私達の教会を「聖なる教会」と告白します。
このような言葉を私達の多くは疑問を感じつつ聞きます。本当に教会は聖なる場所なのか。教会のきよさが建物を意味するものではなく、そこに集う私達一人一人の存在を含めて「教会」とするならば、それは私達自身もきよいということなのでしょうか。
日本語では「教会」という言葉は「教える会」と書きます。私達はこの「教える」という言葉は教会について、その一部を言い表しているに過ぎないということを知らなければなりません。そもそも教会とはその原語であるギリシア語では「エクレシア」という言葉であり、それは「召し集められた者達の群れ」という意味があります。それは自分達で自発的に作った組織やグループではなくて、神の呼びかけを聞いて、そのだ神のみ声に応答して集まった者達の群れだということなのです。
旧約聖書において神様はイスラエルの民たち、すなわち今日のユダヤ人を召し集め、おのが民とされました。そこにはユダヤ人が優秀であったとか、品行方正であったから神は彼らを選んだというようなことは書かれていません。しかし、神様はその自らが撰び、集めたユダヤ人を「聖なる民」と呼ばれました。
しかし、そのイスラエルの民たちの赤裸々な姿というものを聖書から知る私達は彼らが聖と呼ばれた意味が分かりません。しかし、私達がどう思おうと神は自ら召し集めた彼らを「聖なる者たち」と呼んでくださったのであり、それゆえに彼らは「聖なる民」だと聖書は言うのです。同じように私達は神から集められたものであり、こんな私達をも神はそれゆえに「聖なる者」と呼んでくださり、その者達が集う場所である教会を聖なる教会と呼んでくださるのです。
このところが分からないと私達は神様というお方が分かりませんし、教会というものがどんな場所なのかということを知ることなく、信仰生活を過ごすようになります。すなわち「集められた」という意味は、私達が秀でているとか、賢いとか、運がよかったということでは全くなくて、ただただ全てが神様の恵みなのです。ですから、私達が教会に来るようになり、やがてクリスチャンとなるということに対して誇りうるものは誰一人いません。もし、誇るとするならば、このような自分を見捨てることなく、愛し続けてくださった神を誇るべきなのです。
それでは私達は神のどんな呼びかけに応えたのでしょうか。それはイエス・キリストの呼びかけ、いいえ呼びかけというよりも、その驚くべき愛の行為に私達が応えさせていただいたということです。
使徒行伝２０章２８節にはこのような御言葉があります「どうかあなたがた自身に気をつけ、また、すべての群れに気をくばっていただきたい。聖霊は神が御子の血であがない取られた神の教会を牧させるために、あなたがたをその群れの監督者にお立てになったのである」
ここには教会とは「御子の血であがない取られたものである」と書かれています。これはどういう意味か、それは教会は神の御子キリストがその血を流すことにより、すなわち十字架でその命を捧げることによって、買い取られたものであるということであり、言い方を変えますならば、それほどまでに神はこの地上にあります教会を愛しておられるということです。
このことをもっと踏み込んでエペソ５章２４節‐２７節はこう記しています。「そして教会がキリストに仕えるように、妻もすべてのことにおいて、夫に仕えるべきである。夫たる者よ。キリストが教会を愛してそのためにご自身をささげられたように妻を愛しなさい。キリストがそうなさったのは、水で洗うことにより、言葉によって、教会をきよめて聖なるものとするためであり、また、しみも、しわも、そのたぐいのものが、いっさいなく、清くて傷のない栄光の姿の教会をご自分に迎えるためである」 エペソ５章２４節－２７節
キリストがその命を捨てるまでに教会を愛したその理由は、教会を聖なるものとするためであったというのです。すなわち、教会は神の招きに応じた者達、「招きに応じる」とはこのキリストの愛を受け入れた者達であり、それはすなわち、その者達が集まる教会のためにキリストはご自身の命を捧げられたということであり、その教会を神様は聖なるものとしてくださっているということなのです。
実際は「きよくないもの」でありますのに、神は「きよいもの」、「聖なるもの」と私達を、教会を呼んで下さる。このようなことは辻褄が合いませんし、矛盾しているように思えます。しかし、私達の住む世界は辻褄が合うこと、矛盾がなく論理的なことだけで成り立っているのではないのです。
そのように辻褄や矛盾を超える時には必ずある力が強くはたらいています。その力とは「愛の力」です。多くの人が「あなたの子供は最悪だ」と言っても、親にとってその子は「最愛の子供」なのです。人の親すらそのように感じるのです、神はその一人子イエスを私達にお与えになるほどに私達を愛しておられるのです。ですから、神はとてもそうとは思えない教会をも、聖なるものと呼んでくださるのです。
そして、このようなことを知る時に、すなわち、それは、それに「値しない者」が「格別な待遇」を受けているのだということを知る時に、私達は内なる喜びに満たされて神様のために生きる者となるのです。これらも全て教会の不思議なのです。
次に使徒信条にあります「聖なる公同の教会」の「公同の教会」ということについてみていきましょう。
公同の教会
「公同」という言葉は「カトリック」という言葉として用いられます。ですから、ここで言われいている言葉は「カトリックの教会」と言うことになります。しかし、それは「カトリック」と「プロテスタント」という意味ではなく、この「公同」という意味は「普遍」という意味に近く、教会はいつの時代でもどこにあっても、それは神様の前では一つなのだという意味がそこにはあるのです。
このことは先の「聖なる教会」ということの意味が分かってきますと、当然なこととして明らかになります。すなわち、イエス様の愛によって私達は教会に招かれたということ、そして、神はそれゆえに私達を聖と呼んでくださる。そして、そんな私達に対する神の愛の前にバプテストとかプレスビテリアン、ホーリネスというような教会の教派とか、その大きさとかには何ら意味はないのです。私達の子に対する愛は、その子がどんな学校を卒業したか、どんな体格をしているかによって決められることがないように、この地上の全ての教会は、等しく神様の愛のうちにある聖なる教会であり、それらは神の目には一つの教会なのです。神の前に全ての教会は等しいものなのです。
今から約２０００年前に生きたパウロはその手紙の多くをいくつかの教会に宛てて書きましたが、その内容は教会の中で起きる様々な課題や問題に対する言葉で満ちています。時には教会の外でも起きないような恥ずべき出来事についてもパウロは隠すことなく記し、決してさじを投げずに忍耐の限りをもって、その教会のために祈り、諭そうとしています。
私達の教会とそのパウロが向き合った２０００年前の教会は、この使徒信条によりますと、神の前にある、神にきよいとされた一つの教会なのです。ですからパウロと同じように私達もこの教会のために祈り、この教会を愛します。私達はこの教会だけのために祈るのではなく、全ての教会のために祈り、全てのキリストスの教会を愛します。その理由は一つ。それは神様がその一人子、イエス・キリストの命を私達のために、教会のために捨てるほどに愛してくださり、私達を、そして私達の教会を聖なるものと呼んでくださるからです。教会の中で起きることは全て、私達が喜ぶことばかりではありません。時には涙することもあります。しかし、それは神が十字架において血潮を流された教会なのです。なぜ、神が愛し、きよいとした教会をないがしろにすることができましょうか。
「神ご自身が父でありたもう者たちにとって、教会は母である」とは、宗教改革者ジャン・カルバンの言葉です。神を父と呼ぶ者は、その神の愛する教会を「母」と呼ぶのです。カルバンは神を父とするのなら、なぜに教会をその母としないのかと私達に語りかけてきます。
私達は教会というものを、今日、お話しましたようなものとして受け止めてきたでしょうか。教会を日系コミュニティーの一つとして考えていたということはないでしょうか、行っても行かなくてもいい所として考えていたということはないでしょうか。神を父とする者は教会を母として生きるということ、そのことを意識してきたでしょうか。イエス・キリストがその命を捧げるほどに愛された私達の教会、その愛ゆえに、決してそのように呼ばれる値はないと思われる教会を、神は聖なる私の教会と呼んでくださる、そして、全世界にある全ての教会と私達の教会は神の前に一つであるということ、これらのことは私達の目に不思議に見えるかもしれません、しかし、そのところに世界に存在する全ての教会に対する神様の愛が満ち溢れているのです。私達はこのような思いをもって、この教会にこれからも集ってこようではありませんか。真実な心をもって、この母なるキリストの教会に属し、それに仕えていこうではありませんか。

Church is a very mysterious place. For example, there are attractive rides in an amusement park or at restaurants, there are various menus such as Japanese or western style meals and they will serve us what we order. Though at a church, there are only pews. There are no rides or waiters that serve you. Church is not a place like club or association where people with same interest gather up. Church is a place where peoples of all different age groups and various back grounds gather.
Jesus once said to the crowds who came to John the Baptist, the herald of Jesus Himself and worker in the dessert.
Please read Ochibo in the program）Some people say Pascal said this phrase that Jesus’s words in his mind. Jesus describes human as （ 風に揺らぐ葦that moves by change of times or public opinions）
At the time Jesus said to the crowd “You all came to the desert to see John and to hear what he says.” John was not the one who moved by the public opinion, he was the one who lived what he believed. Furthermore, he was far from people who lived gorgeous, fancy life wearing camel furs. The book called “90% of one’s value determined from their looks.” became one of the best sellers in Japan. We live in such a confusing times filled with so many information and trends. What Jesus said then is strongly demanding our heart living today.
If Jesus would talk to us today, I believe he would say “You are not coming to church for a trend, fashion, or anything else fancy.” I am sure that he would say “You came here to worship God who created the prophets.”
A pastor would talk about the Bible and he talks about what is written in it. A pastor would never say the Bible got boring because he talked about it too many times and start talking about the best seller of the year instead. A pastor would just talks about the Lord who cannot be touched or pointed and the congregation will pray and praise to Him who is unseen and they talk each other about what He has done for them. In this meaning, church is very mysterious place.
We have been studying about the Apostle’s creed. In the creed, it says”I believe in the holy Christian church”, this is the confession of our faith. Today I would like to talk about the holy Christian church. Firstly I would talk about the holy church and secondly I would like to talk about the Christian church. And after that, I would talk about the mystery of church.
In Apostle’s creed, we say, I believe in the holy Christian church. What does it mean by our church is “holy”? Is the church building by itself holy because it was sanctified or because people with good conduct gather there? No, that is not the reason why church is “holy”.
We do not sanctify building structure or think the building itself is holy. Church is a place of people gather, and sometimes it has various problems. One cannot be sanitised and transformed into a wonderful person just by entering this building that has miraculous power. Though, Apostle’s creed says this building, our church is the “holy” church.
Most of us hear these words with doubts. Is it true that church is a holy place?
If the holiness of church points out not only the building by itself, but also us members too, does that mean we are holy also?
In Japanese, “church” is written as “place to teach”. We must know this “teaching” only describes one of the many characteristics church has. Originally Ecclesia (Church in Greek), means “the people who were gathered by god”. They were not a group started on their own, they were a group gathered up by the God’s voice.
In Old Testament, God called peoples of Israelites, who we call Jewish people today, and He called them “His people”. It does not say in the testament that God had chosen them because they were excellent or in good conduct. But God had chosen and gathered Jewish people, He called them “the holy people”.
Since we could know about Israelites only by reading the bible, it is hard to understand why they were called holy. But no matter how we think of them, God called them the holy people and the Bible says they are holy. In the same way, we were gathered by God and because of that He called us and church, the place such people gather “holy”.
If we cannot understand this, we would end up spending our Christian live being not able to understand who God is and what kind of place the church really is. The meaning of “being called” is not saying we are superior, smarter, or luckier than others. It is all just by the grace of God. So, there is nothing to be proud of being a Christian or coming to the church every week. Instead of being proud of our selves, we should be proud of God who never abundant us and who kept loving us.
What was the God’s “calling” that we have responded too? The calling, or the “amazing action of love” we have responded was from the Jesus Christ.
Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God,[a] which he bought with his own blood.[b
In this scripture, it says the Church was bought with His own blood. What does this mean?Church was bought by the blood of Christ who sacrificed his own life on the cross. In another word, God loves the church on earth so much, he even sacrificed his own son’s life.
Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing[b] her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.
The Christ decided to lose His life for the church, because he wanted to make it “holy”. Church is the place for people who accepted God’s calling to gather. Christ gave His own life to the Church, where people who accepted his love gathered, that is why God called this place “holy”.
We and Church building by itself actually are not holy but God calls us and the church holy and sanctified. It is not coherent and it seems contradicts. But the world we live is not just made out of things that are coherent, consistent and logical.
When things beyond coherent or contradiction happen to us, there is always a power acts on us. That power is the power of love. Even if many people say your child is the worst, your child is the best and the dearest one to you.
God loved his son as much as we love our own children. Though God loved us so deeply, he offered us his only child’s life to us. That’s why God calls church as holy, even the one that is not.
When we know that we are not deserved to receive God’s special treatment, we are filled with joy and being transformed into person who live for God. This is all miracle of the Church.
Next, I would like to talk about Catholic Church, from the holy Catholic church.
The word catholic means very close to the word “universal”. So church is all one to God in any ages. In this section, the definition of the word “catholic” is differs from when we say “catholic” or “protestant”.
If we understand the meaning of the holy church, we will be able to understand what “catholic church” really means. We were called to church by the love of Jesus, thus God calls us holy. In front of his strong, deep love, the denominations of Baptist, Presbyterian, or Holiness means nothing. As our love to our own child doesn’t determine by what school they graduated or their physique, all the churches on earth are equally holly in the love of God and those are one church in the eyes of God.
About 2000years ago, Paul wrote many letters to several churches. In the letters, he talked about his concerns toward the troubles and problem that churches could face. Sometimes Paul even wrote about shameful event that would not happen even outside of churches, and never gave up and patiently prayed for the church and admonishes
Our church today and the churches in Paul’s days 2000years ago, are the one holy church before God according to the Appostle’s creed. So we will pray for the church and love the church. We pray and love not only for SDJCC but also for all Christian churches. There is only one reason for us doing so. Because God loves us and our churches as deeply as offering us his son’s life. And he calls us and our church holy. Not all the things happen in church are joyous. Sometimes we shed our tears. But this is a church that God shed His blood on the cross. Why can we not value our church that God loves and says it’s holy?
Religious reformer John Calvin said,“To whom God himself is Father , Church is their mother” Whoever calls God the Father, calls Church that Father loves Mother. Calvin asks “ If you call God as your Father, why don’t you call church as your mother? “
Have you ever viewed the church like I explained today? Have you ever had a feeling that our church is just one of the Japanese community groups, or a place doesn’t matter if you go or not? Have you always focused on the fact that one who sees God as their father should see the church as their mother? Because of the love of Christ Jesus who lost his life for our church, because of such love, God calls our church “holy” even the building itself doesn’t deserve that name.
It seems so wondrous all the churches in this whole world and our church is only one church before God. But God’s love overflows in all churches in this world.
Please do not forget about this and come to the church from now on.
With our sincere hearts, let us belong to our motherly church and submit to it.
