私達の教会は１９３０年に創立されました。これまでどれだけ多くの方達がこの教会で信仰生活を送ってきたことでしょうか。“年月が経つ”ということはイコール、多くの信仰的な経験を積んできたということを意味し、そのことを私達は“成熟する”と言います。そう考えますなら、８４年という年月は教会の成熟には十分すぎる時となりましょう。パウロが『こうして、わたしたちはもはや子供ではないので、だまし惑わす策略により、人々の悪巧みによって起る様々な教の風に吹きまわされたり、もてあそばれたりすることがなく・・・』と言っていますように、私達はもはや子供ではないということを自覚しなければなりません・・・。

新年度標語：キリストを知る

新しい年度をむかえ、今日は教会総会の日です。その資料にも書きましたが、この日から私達は新しい年度の標語と共に来る一年を過ごしていきたく願っています。皆さんのお手元にある礼拝プログラムの表紙も変わりましたのでご確認ください。
皆さんは今、キリスト教会の礼拝に来ています。ここにおります皆さんの多くはクリスチャンであり、人は私達をキリスト教徒と呼びます。これらの呼び名に共通することはイエス・キリストという名がそこに含まれているということです。すなわち私達の信仰はどこにかかっているかといいますと「イエス・キリスト」にかかっているのです。
今年度、掲げたいと思っております聖書の言葉はエペソ４章の言葉です。『そして彼は、ある人を使徒とし、ある人を預言者とし、ある人を伝道者とし、ある人を牧師、教師として、お立てになった。それは、聖徒たちをととのえて奉仕のわざをさせ、キリストのからだを建てさせ、わたしたちすべての者が、神の子を信じる信仰の一致と彼を知る知識の一致とに到達し、全き人となり、ついに、キリストの満ちみちた徳の高さにまで至るためである。こうして、わたしたちはもはや子供ではないので、だまし惑わす策略により、人々の悪巧みによって起る様々な教の風に吹きまわされたり、もてあそばれたりすることがなく、愛にあって真理を語り、あらゆる点において成長し、かしらなるキリストに達するのである』（エペソ４章１１節－１５節）
キリスト教徒、クリスチャンである者はキリストのように生きることを願います。そしてその願いを全うするために一番、大切なことは「キリストとはどんなお方なのか」ということをまず、知ることです。
１００人の人がいますと、１００人とも皆、各々キリストのイメージを持っています。「キリストとはどんなお方ですか」と問われた時に、色々な答えが出てくることでしょう。ある方は「キリストは愛なるお方です」と答え、ある方は「キリストは憐れみのあるお方です」と答えるかもしれません。しかし、イエス・キリストは愛なる、憐れみのあるお方だけなのかというと、そうではないことが聖書を見ていきますと分かります。これらイエス様がもっている諸々のご性質を知ることによって、私達ははじめてイエス・キリストとはどういうお方なのかということが分かるのです。
そして、このようにしてイエス・キリストを知るということは、私達の日々の生活の中で向き合う諸々の事柄に対して、具体的に私達がそれに向き合うことができることを意味します。さらにはこのことは個人の祝福にとどまらず、１３節の御言葉にありますように『わたしたちすべての者が、神の子を信じる信仰の一致と彼を知る知識の一致とに到達する』ことができる道ぞなえとなるのです。
ですから、この一年、私達はこの神の子、すなわち「イエスを信じる信仰」とその「イエスを知る知識」に集中しましょう。このところから私達はさらに信仰の高嶺に引き上げられてまいりましょう。また、まだ教会にきて間もないという方達にとりまして、この一年はキリスト教の中心にあるイエス・キリストを知る大きなチャンスとなることを心より願っています。そして、私達が今年度を終える一年後に『わたしたちすべての者が、神の子を信じる信仰の一致と彼を知る知識の一致とに到達し、全き人となり、ついに、キリストの満ちみちた徳の高さにまで至る』ことを期待しましょう。
話は変わりますが、四年に一度の祭典、サッカーワールド・カップが開幕し、日本は初戦を落としました。とても悔しい負け方でフラストレーションが残りました。なぜフラストレーションが残ったかといいますと、日本代表がこの度、目指していた戦術を全くすることができなかったからです。
その戦術とはこれまでの日本代表は守りを重視していたのですが、今年のチームは、相手の攻撃を受けやすいというリスクを負いながらも、とにかく前に前に攻め抜いて勝ちを取りに行くという新しい戦法でした。しかし、初戦の日本は委縮してしまったのでしょうか、その戦術に立つことができずに、負けました。彼らの悔しさは相手がとてもよかったということではなく、自分達がすべきことをしなかったということにあると言っても過言ではないでしょう。
しかしながら、この日本の新しい取り組みを見ていて教えられた大切なことが三つあります。それは１）一人一人がチームが目指すべきものを知っている、２）一人一人が、その目標にいたるために伴うリスクを知っている、３）一人一人がこの目標のために何をすべきかということを知っているということの大切さです。
そして、このことは今日、これから見てまいります聖書の言葉にどう向き合うかということに対しても知恵を与えてくれるものです。この三つを教会に集う一人一人がしっかりと知ることができるのなら、私達の教会はさらにその土台を強くし、力強く前に尽き進んでいくことができるでしょうし、私達自身の毎日の生活もこれまでとは違った、まさしくさらに生きがいのある生涯へと導かれていくことでしょう。さて、それではエペソ書の言葉から三つのことをお話ししましょう。まず最初に「自分の役割を明確にする」ということです。
自分の役割を明確にする
サッカーではフォワードの選手、右サイドバックの選手、ゴールキーパー、さらには監督、チームに帯同しているトレイナーの役割は皆、違います。この託されていることが違う者達が、それぞれ自分の役割を明確に知り、互いのはたらきに敬意をあらわし、自分に託されていることには最善をなすことはとても大切なことです。フォワードの仕事は点を取ることで、ゴールキーパーの仕事は点を取られないことと、はっきりしています。パウロもこのエペソ書の冒頭で、これから話すことはこのことを前提としているのだと、こう書き記しました。
『そして彼は、ある人を使徒とし、ある人を預言者とし、ある人を伝道者とし、ある人を牧師、教師として、お立てになった。それは、聖徒たちをととのえて奉仕のわざをさせ、キリストのからだを建てさせ…』
初代の教会を形成するにあたり、パウロはここにもある役割をもつ人達を記しています。一つ一つの違いを説明することは今朝はしませんが、ここには皆さんが教会で見かける人がいます。そうです、牧師です。
消防士に期待することは何ですか。サッカーの監督に期待することは何ですか。私達は消防士が消防車の修理をしたり、消防署の花壇にお花を植えることを望まないでしょう。彼らの仕事は明確で火事の報せが来た時に、一秒でも早くその現場に行くことであり、私達はそれを望んでいます。サッカーの監督が選手のスパイクを磨いたり、選手をマッサージしたり、チームの会計をして、肝心要のチームの戦術を考えなかったり、選手の技術に対してアドバイスをしないのであるのなら、その人はサッカーの監督ではありません。それでは牧師がまずすべきことは何でしょうか。
この箇所ではっきりしていますことは、牧師の役目は主にある兄弟姉妹をととのえて、喜んでキリストの教会を建て上げることに参与していただくということです。言うまでもなく、教会は牧師一人で成り立っている場所ではなく、多くのはたらきがある教会において、このことはその一つであり、それは牧師に託されている役目だということです。それでは皆さんの役割は何でしょうか。
『1兄弟たちよ。そういうわけで、神のあわれみによってあなたがたに勧める。あなたがたのからだを、神に喜ばれる、生きた、聖なる供え物としてささげなさい』という有名な言葉で始まるローマ１２章は続いて、私達のからだを神に喜ばれる、生きた、聖なる供え物としてささげなさいと言います。それでは具体的にその供え物とはどのようなものなのでしょう。この後にそのことが書かれています。
すなわち『4一つのからだにたくさんの肢体があるが、それらの肢体がみな同じ働きをしてはいないように、5わたしたちも数は多いが、キリストにあって一つのからだであり、また各自は互に肢体だからである。6このように、わたしたちは与えられた恵みによって、それぞれ異なった賜物を持っているので、もし、それが預言であれば、信仰の程度に応じて預言をし、7奉仕であれば奉仕をし、また教える者であれば教え、8勧めをする者であれば勧め、寄附する者は惜しみなく寄附し、指導する者は熱心に指導し、慈善をする者は快く慈善をすべきである』
鼻で食べ物を食べ、目で字を書き、指で歩く人はいません。鼻には鼻の、目には目の、指には指の役割があり、その役割に徹することによって初めて体は機能し、その健康が保たれます。鼻が息することを、口が食べることを、目が見ることを拒否したら、その不具合は鼻だけ、口だけ、目だけにとどまらず、体全体に影響します。鼻や目がかゆければ指でかき、指が何か変なものに触れたら鼻で匂いをかぎ、その安全を確認します。
私達の体の各器官は独立したものではなく、それぞれがそれぞれの器官を支えています。私達はこの教会での互いの役割を明確にすべきです。もちろん、健康の問題や、年齢という理由により、私には何もすべきことはないという方がいるかもしれません。しかし、すべきことが必ずあります。もし、思い当たらないのなら、牧師にお尋ねください。あなたに託されていることについてお話しましょう。先にお読みしたでしょう、それが牧師の役割ですから。
キリストを頭とするこの教会で、主があなたに与えてくださっている役割は何ですか。それぞれのはたらきのために祈り、そこにハーモニーを奏でることができたらなんと素晴らしいことでしょうか。二つ目のこと、それは「キリストを知る」ということです。
キリストを知る
今までお話してきましたように、神様からそれぞれかけがえのない役目が与えられている私達は、そのはたらきを継続するために、私達の目標を定めなければなりません。それこそが、この１３節に書かれている『神の子を信じる信仰の一致』と『彼を知る知識の一致』であり、これらのことにより私達が『ついにはキリストの満ちみちた徳の高さにまで至る』のです。
先にお話しましたように、このことも牧師の役目だとここに書かれていますので、牧師は皆さんがキリストを知り、私達がキリストの満ちみちた徳の高さに至るために、寝ても覚めてもそのことを考えなければなりません。パウロはかつてガラテヤの教会の兄弟姉妹に宛てた手紙の中で、このような言葉を書いて送りました。『ああ、わたしの幼な子たちよ。あなたがたの内にキリストの形ができるまでは、わたしは、またもや、あなたがたのために産みの苦しみをする』（ガラテヤ４章１９節）。
ここにパウロが生涯をかけた使命があり、彼はこの産みの苦しみと共に宣教を初め、この産みの苦しみと共に主のもとに召されていったのでありましょう。同じように、もし、私がこのことを人任せにしたり、このことを差し置いて他のことをしているのなら、そのことにより牧師が本来すべきことをしていないのなら、その損害を一番受けているのは私ではなく、皆さん自身となってしまうのです。
ゆえに私に託されていることとして、この一年、聖書に記されているイエス・キリストについて祈り、調べ、特に礼拝のメッセージにおいてイエス・キリストに四方八方からフォーカスして皆さんにお伝えできたらと願っております。イエスは何を見、何を語り、何を考え、何を成したお方なのか。それゆえに私達は何を見、何を語り、何を考え、どのように日々の信仰生活の中で物事を決断して、事を成していけばいいのか。このことにおいて私達が同じ所に立つことができるのなら、私達の教会はますますこれからも祝福されていくことでしょう。
そして、知るということには必ず実践がともなうべきであり、その実践は私達が週日、暮らすその場所でなされることであり、また先にお話しました私達一人一人に託されているこの教会がその実践の場となります。私達はここで時間をかけて学び、そして、成熟へと至ります。そう、三つめのことをお話ししましょう。それはその「成熟を目指して」ということです。
成熟を目指して
先ほど「目標にいたるまでのリスクを知る」ということをお話しました。あらかじめお話しておきます。ここには私達の信仰生活にともなうリスクが書かれています。
『わたしたちはもはや子供ではないので、だまし惑わす策略により、人々の悪巧みによって起る様々な教の風に吹きまわされたり、もてあそばれたりすることがなく、愛にあって真理を語り、あらゆる点において成長し、かしらなるキリストに達するのである』
そうです、予め申しておきますが、私達は今までそうであったように、これからも「だまし惑わす策略」、「人々の悪巧み」、「様々な教えの風」に吹きまわされます。これらはキリストを知るために私達が通るリスクです。しかし、これらのリスクが常に私達に害をおよぼすかというと、そうではありません。
私達の教会は１９３０年に創立されました。これまでどれだけ多くの方達がこの教会で信仰生活を送ってきたことでしょうか。“年月が経つ”ということはイコール、多くの信仰的な経験を積んできたということを意味し、そのことを私達は“成熟する”と言います。そう考えますなら、８４年という年月は教会の成熟には十分すぎる時となりましょう。ゆえに上記にパウロが『こうして、わたしたちはもはや子供ではないので、だまし惑わす策略により、人々の悪巧みによって起る様々な教の風に吹きまわされたり、もてあそばれたりすることがなく・・・』と言っていますように、たとえ私達が諸々のリスクを通ったとしても、私達はもはや子供ではないということを自覚しなければなりません。
これまでのワールドカップの日本代表にサッカー選手としての身体的、技術的なピークは過ぎているのですが、代表として選ばれたベテランの選手達がいました。技術的に体力的にベスト・オブ・ベストで臨まなければならないチームに、なぜそのような選手が選ばれたのでしょうか。一重にそれは彼らに経験があるからです。そうです、彼らはこれまで数々の修羅場を通ってきているからです。その彼らの経験と知恵がチームの中で大きな役割となるからです。経験の少ない若手の多いチームでは、まさしく対戦チームの“策略”、時には思いもしなかった敵地での“悪巧み”に心が揺らいでしまい、それが実際のプレイに影響を与えることでしょう。そして、これらのことは人から人へと感染するものです。ですから、このベテランの選手はそのチームに選ばれたのです。想定外の諸々の問題に向き合い、それに慌てふためく者達の中に過酷な状況をこれまで幾つも乗り越えてきた熟練者がいるということはとても大切なことです。
主にある皆さん、クリスチャンとして何十年も生きてこられた人はもはや子供ではありません。なぜならその人は十分すぎるほどにこれまで様々な信仰的な戦いをしてきたからです。しかし、問題は本人がそのことを自覚していないということです。私達がさらにそこから成長するために不可欠なことは、自分はもはや子供ではないということをキリストにあって自覚する以外にありません。へブル書の記者はそのことをこのように書き記しました。
12あなたがたは、久しい以前からすでに教師となっているはずなのに、もう一度神の言の初歩を、人から手ほどきしてもらわねばならない始末である。あなたがたは堅い食物ではなく、乳を必要としている。13すべて乳を飲んでいる者は、幼な子なのだから、義の言葉を味わうことができない。14しかし、堅い食物は、善悪を見わける感覚を実際に働かせて訓練された成人のとるべきものである。1そういうわけだから、わたしたちは、キリストの教の初歩をあとにして、完成を目ざして進もうではないか。今さら、死んだ行いの悔改めと神への信仰、2洗いごとについての教と按手、死人の復活と永遠のさばき、などの基本の教をくりかえし学ぶことをやめようではないか。3神の許しを得て、そうすることにしよう。（へブル５章１３節－６章３節）
パウロは言います。もう、あなたは「とっくに教師となっているはずだ」と。それだけの年月をあなたはクリスチャンとして生きてきたのだと。あなたたちは既に「善悪を見分ける感覚を実際に働かせて訓練された成人だ」と。しかし、なぜもう一度、神の言葉の初歩から手ほどきをしてもらわなければならないのか。なぜ、まだ乳を吸っているのかと。
主にある兄弟姉妹、何度も見聞きしてきた、何度も直面してきた問題に対して繰り返し動揺し、それについて繰り返しどうしようかと思い悩むことはやめようではありませんか。私達には取るべき道があり、いつまでも初歩にとどまるべきではなく、完成を目指して前に進むべきです。キリストのからだなる教会に必要な人は“善悪を見分ける感覚を実際に働かせて訓練された人”です。「だまし惑わす策略」、「人々の悪巧み」、「様々な教えの風に吹きまわされる」ことなく、「もてあそばされる」ことなく、「固く立つ」ことができる人です。このような成熟した者が教会に多く起こされていくのなら、私達が諸々の惑わしに揺り動かされることはありません。私達はこの成長を、成熟を目指して今も歩んでいるのです。
当初、キリストの１２弟子の中にもきっと何かしらの一致というものがあったことでしょう。かつてはそれが彼らの出身地であったり、職業的共通点であったかと思われます。しかし、それらをして彼らは本当に一つとなったのではなくて、後に彼らは「神の子を信じる信仰の一致」と「彼を知る知識の一致」へと導かれていきました。
私達、海外にある日本人教会にも性別、年齢、文化、出身地、生まれも育ちも異なる者が集まります。しかし、教会には県人会や労働組合はありません。なぜなら、私達が目指すべきところは「キリストを信じる信仰の一致」と「キリストを知る知識の一致」だからです。このことがしっかりと伝えられ、互いにそのキリストについて同じ見方をすることができる、そのところに私達の一致があるのです。そして、私達は昨日よりも今日、今日よりも明日、さらにこのキリストを知ることにより、その初歩の教えをあとにして、完成を目指して、成熟を目指して歩むのです。これらのことをこの一年、私達の心に刻み、私達の目標であるイエス・キリスト、その「イエスを知る」という、新しい旅をこれから始めてまいりましょう。お祈りしましょう。
New Year’s Goal: Knowing Christ

Welcoming a new fiscal year, today is the day of our church’s general meeting. From today on I wish to spend the year walking towards our mission and our new goals of the year. The cover of the worship service program that you now have has also changed.
You are now at a worship service of a Christian church. Most of you here are Christians and we are called Christians, or believers in Christ. This name people call us by, includes the name of Jesus Christ. So our faith is founded and centered on Jesus Christ.
The passage of the bible I would like to put up this year is from Ephesians chapter 4. “So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.” (Ephesians 4:11-15)
As believers in Christ, Christians wish to live like Christ. And the first thing we must do to carry out this wish is to know “what kind of person was Christ”.
If there were 100 people, all 100 would have a different image of Christ. If you asked “What kind of person was Christ?” we would get many different answers. One person may answer, “Christ is full of love”, and another may answer, “He is very compassionate” But from reading the bible, we know that he was not just a loving compassionate man. From knowing the different qualities of Jesus, we are able to know what kind of person he was.
And to know Jesus Christ in this way means that we are better able to face the problems we come across in our daily lives. Not only does in stop at blessing us, but as written in verse 13, “the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God”.
And so this year, let us focus on the Son of God and our “unity in faith” and “unity in knowledge”. And from there, let us be lifted up to the peak of our faith. I wish for this year to be a great chance for those who are still new to this church to build up their foundation on Christ and get to know him personally. And my hopes are that by the end of this fiscal year, that “the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.”.
This is a change in topic but, this year Japan lost its first game in the Soccer world cup that is held every four years. I feel a little frustrated with the regrettably close loss. Why I felt frustrated was because the team was not able to reach the goal in using their tactics that they had planned to.
In previous years, their tactics had been to focus on their defense but this year, they had changed it to risk lowering their defenses in order to move forward, attack, and make more goals. But on their first game, they were not able to stand to their new tactics and carry it out. Their regret is most likely not on the fact that the other team won, but on the fact that they were not able to perform to their hopes.
But there is three things that can be taught from seeing this team perform. The first is that each and every member of the team knows what their aim is. The second being that each and every member knows the risks that comes with pursuing their goal. And the third, each and every member knows what must be done to reach their goal, and its importance.
This gives us wisdom to face the bible passages we will be looking at today. If each of us here were to know and put into action these three things, the foundation of our church would be strengthened and we will be able to move forward strongly. There would also be a change in each one of our lives. So let us now talk about three things from the book of Ephesians. The first is, “To know your role”.
To know your role
In soccer, everyone such as the centre, middle field, back or goal keeper; coach or trainer, has a different role. Each is entrusted with a specific task. And it is very important to respect one-another’s roles, and to know your own role and to give it your all. The middle field player’s role is to make goals, and a goal keepers role is to keep goals from being made. This is very clear. Paul also makes the purpose of what he writes clear in Ephesians. He writes,
“So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up…”
Here too, Paul writes about the roles in forming a church during his time. I will not get through each of their roles in detail at the moment, but in this list is one that you will recognize here in church today: the pastor.
What do you expect of a firefighter? What do you expect a soccer coach to do? We don’t want a firefighter to always be servicing the fire engine or watering the garden at the fire station. Their job is to get to the site of a fire as soon as possible and put it out. If a soccer coach does not take care of the team’s supplies and finances, know the strains and needs of the player’s bodies, think of the essential tactics for the team, and advise them in their techniques, that person would not be the coach. So then, what must a pastor do?
From what we can see in this passage, a pastor’s role is to prepare their fellow brothers and sisters in Christ and take part in the building up of the church with joy. Needless to say, a church cannot be made with the pastor alone and there are many functions in running a church. The pastor is just one of the many components. So then, what are your roles in the church?
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” It says here in Romans 12 to serve as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God. But what exactly does it mean to be a holy and pleasing sacrifice? There is a continuation to this famous passage.
“For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.”
No one eats from their nose, writes with their eyes, and walks with their fingers. A nose has the function of a nose, an eye has a function of an eye and a finger has a function of a finger, and only by carrying out its functions, the body is able to function. If a nose refuses to breath, a mouth refuses to eat, or an eye refuses to see, it would disrupt not only that organ but the whole body. If the nose or eye has an itch, the finger is used to itch and if the finger touches something strange, we use our nose to smell and confirm that it is safe.
The organs of our body do not function separately but support each other. In this church, we must clearly distinct each of our roles. There maybe those who say that they cannot contribute to any function because of their age or their health. But there is always a necessary role for everyone. If you can’t think of one, please ask the pastor. I’ll tell you what has been entrusted on you. As we read earlier, that is the role of a pastor.
In this church where we put Christ as our structure, what is your role that He has entrusted you with? What a wonderful blessing it would be to pray for each functional role and create a harmony. The second thing is “to know Christ”.
To know Christ
As we have been speaking about, we who have been entrusted with an important role must set a goal to further continue our works. That is the “unity in faith” and “unity in knowledge” written about in chapter 13, and through this we “become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.”
As we spoke about earlier, this is too is the role of a pastor. Whether asleep or awake, the pastor must think about how we deepen our relationship with God and how to attain to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Paul once wrote to his brothers and sisters in Christ of a church in Galatia, “My dear children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in you,” (Galatians 4:19)
Here is Paul’s life mission. He began his ministry with these pains of childbirth, a pain which continued until he was called home. In the same way, if I had pushed aside what God has entrusted to me, if I were to not do what a pastor must do, the one who would have to bear the loss is not me but everyone else.
And so, this year, I wish to l pray and study, particularly on the worship service messages, focusing on Jesus Christ from all directions, to pass on to all of you, as my entrusted task from God. What did Jesus see, tell, and think, and do. And how must we see, tell, think, and do as we live our daily lives in faith. If we can all have the same understanding and determination, what blessings this church would bring.
The knowledge we are given will be put into practice; practice in our daily lives, in our homes, and will be passed on to every person we encounter. The church will be a place as such. We spend much of our time here studying and learning as we grow in maturity. The third thing we will be talking about is “to aim for maturity”.
To aim for maturity
Earlier we talked about “knowing the risks of aiming for the goal”. I will say this now. There are also risks to be taken in out lives of faith.
“Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.”
Yes, I tell you this in advance but as there has been and will be, there will always be “waves that toss you back and forth”, “teachings that blow you here and there”, and “cunning and crafty deceitful schemes”. These are the risks we must take to know Jesus Christ. But these risks are not always a harm to us.
Our church was founded in 1930. Imagine how many people lived their lives of faith in this church. “The Passing of time” equals gaining spiritual experience, and we call this “maturing”. If you think in this way, 84 years seems like more than enough time for a church to mature. And so as Paul says, “Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.” we must become aware that we are no longer like children even if we encounter these risks.
In the past, there have been cases of veteran soccer players, who had already passed their physical and tactical peak, being picked on to the team representing Japan. Why were those players picked to be on a team where the players must be the best of the best physically and tactically? It is because of their wealth of experience. They have been through many tough situations. Their wealth of experience and wisdom plays a big role in the team. A team full of young players would be shaken and affected by the cunning and crafty tactics of the opposing team. But by having veteran players in the team, they can face and withstand problems even beyond their expectations. It is very important to have those who can stand firm because of their experience with harsh encounters of the past.
Those here in Christ, if you have lived decades as a Christian, you are no longer a child. You have fought in numerous numbers of spiritual battles. But the problem is, you yourselves are not aware of it. What’s necessary in order for us to grow is to realize in our faith, that we are not children anymore. It is written in the book of Hebrews,…
“Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, instruction about cleansing rites, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. And God permitting, we will do so.” (Hebrews 5:13-6:3)
Paul is saying, you have already grown beyond infancy and should have matured to the point were you should be able to teach. That you “have been trained to be able to distinguish good from evil”. Then why must you be taught to lay again the elementary foundation? Why are you still living on milk?
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, let us stop being shaken and troubles by the same problems we have faced many times over. Don’t linger at the first few steps of the path laid out before you. Aim to reach what lies ahead. Those who are necessary in the body of Christ are, “those who have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil by training and constant use.” Those who will not let “waves toss you back and forth”, “teachings blow you here and there”, or be affected by the “cunning and crafty deceitful schemes”. If we are able to bring up many members to this maturity, we would not be shaken by anything that comes our way. We move forward even today towards this goal.
At first, I would guess that there had been something in common between Jesus’ twelve disciples. It may have been where they came from or their profession. But they did not become one because of those things, but because of their “unity in faith in Jesus” and “unity in knowledge of Jesus”.
We as a Japanese church abroad come together as those of different gender, age, culture, or birthplace. But in a church, there is no association or group based on what region or prefecture we are from, or our professions. This is because the goal we aim for is “unity in faith” and “unity in knowledge of Jesus” For this to be known and shared between us is what brings us together in union. And so we move forward, getting to know Jesus more today than yesterday, tomorrow even more than today, aiming for our goal, aiming for maturity. Let us put behind us the elementary teachings and take on this year with our goal of getting to know Jesus Christ engraved in our hearts. Let’s pray
