神はなぜイスラエルを選ばれたのか。アメリカや、日本、ブラジルではいけなかったのか？モーセに率いられたイスラエルの民が放浪する場所がネバダ州のデスバレーでは駄目だったのか。イエス・キリストが熊本、阿蘇山麓で山上の垂訓を語ったり、箱根の大涌谷で悪魔の誘惑を受けたのではだめだったのだろうか。ジャマイカで、椰子の木にのぼるザアカイにイエスが声をかけるというのではまずかったのだろうか。ブドウの木の譬えがバナナの木の譬えではだめなのか。そう考えますと世界にはイエス・キリストが生まれる候補地は幾百もあったと思います。天候を考えるならAmerica's
Finest Cityであるサンディエゴもお勧めです。アラビア半島がバハ・カリフォルニアではだめだったのでしょうか。

時は満ちた：旧約から新約への橋渡し

聖書、伝道の書にはなんとも味わい深い言葉が記されています『天の下のすべての事には、季節があり、すべてのわざには時がある。生まれるに時があり、死ぬるに時があり、泣くに時があり、笑うに時があり、悲しむに時があり、踊るに時がある』。
私達の手元にあります聖書はその見開きのページ、その第一行目に記されている「はじめに神は天と地とを創造された」という言葉で始まります。天と地の創造により、その時から私達の世界に昼と夜が生まれ、「時間」が生まれ、以来、私達はこの「時」の中に生かされています。私達は与えられた命と共に、その時の間を生きています。
３９回かけてお話してきました旧約聖書も先週で終わりました。そこには包み隠すことのない赤裸々な人間の姿があり、その人の姿を直視し続けることは、また自分自身の心が探られることで、辛く感じることもありましたが、それは確かに真実な人間の姿でした。神は人に律法を与えたのですが、人はその律法を守ることができませんでした。そのことが数千年かけて試されたのですが、結論は人の内には律法を守る心、もっといいますと守ろうとする心がないということでした。そのような意味では旧約聖書は私達に自分ではどうすることもできない大きな課題を残しました。、
先週、お話しました旧約聖書最後のマラキ書の時代から、これから私達が見ていきます新約聖書の時代まで、その年月は４００年あり、その間について聖書は何も記していません。すなわち、その間、神様の言葉を預かり、それを語る預言者が誰もいなかったということです。神様は私達にはどうすることもできない重い課題を４００年間、そのままにされました。伝道の書の言葉を借りていいますのなら「黙るに時があり」ということになりましょうか。その沈黙の中で、どうすることもできないという思いがさらに人の心に刻まれるようにということだったのでしょうか・・・。しかし、その４００年の沈黙も破られる時がきました。
そのことを告げるイエス・キリストの第一声がガリラヤからこの世界に響き渡りました『時は満ちた、神の国は近づいた。悔い改めて福音を信ぜよ』（マルコ１章１５節）。イエス・キリストのこの言葉は「私は今、ここにいる、それゆえに時は満ちた、神の国は近づいた。悔い改めて福音を信ぜよ」と言っているのです。そして、同じ事をパウロはガラテヤ４章４節の中でこう書き記しています『時の満ちるにおよんで、神は御子を女から生まれさせて、おつかわしになった』。ここには「神は御子を女から生まれさせ」とあります。すなわち、キリストの誕生には神が関わっており、その子は天地創造の時から刻まれてきた時がいよいよ満ちるにおよんで、神がこの地にうまれさせたということであり、それはこのキリストの誕生と旧約時代の敗北の歩みというものが途切れていることではなくて、その同じ道程の中でキリストはこの世界に生まれたということです。
一滴の水がポタッ、ポタッと器に落ちるのを想像してみてください。雀の涙のような一滴の水もやがて時間をかけますと、その器を徐々に満たしていき、最後には、「あっ、こぼれる！」という時が来、その最後の一滴が落ちると同時に、水は器から溢れ出ることでしょう。まさしく、そのような後にも先にもない時が満ちた瞬間、その時に神はイエス・キリストをこの地に生まれさせたのです。私達は今日、教会を「キリスト教会」、「クリスチャン・チャーチ」と呼び、そこに集う者達を「クリスチャン」と呼びますが、まさしくこのキリストが私達の信仰の中心にあるのです。
「時が満ちた」ということは具体的にどのようなことなのでしょうか。来週からマタイによる福音書を皮切りに新約聖書を一書づつ見ていきますが、今日はその前に、まず、この「時が満ちた」ということについて見ていきたく願っております。
イエスが生きた時代というのはどのような時代だったのでしょうか。イエス・キリストはなぜ、あの時代に生まれたのでしょうか？あの時より３００年早く生まれ、、あるいは、１０００年後に生まれるということではいけなかったのでしょうか？
２０１３年という年について、その年の只中にいるなら私達はこの一年を正確に評価することはできません。でも、もし今から１００年後の２１１３年なら２０１３年について評価することができるでしょう。キリストの時代から２０００年を経て、私達はそこにいたった歴史、その後の歴史、それらを踏まえて、すなわちその全体を見渡すことによって、その時には見えなかったものが見えてきます。
イエスの生きた時代、それはローマ皇帝カイザルによる世界統一がなされていた時代でした（この場合の世界というのは文字通り全世界を示すのではなくて、地中海を中心とした世界のことです）。それまでの世界は小さな国がひしめき合い、互いに虎視眈々とけん制しあって、国と国の行き来が難しい時代でした。故にそのような状況でイエス・キリストがメッセージを発しても、それが隣国にもたらされることは非常に難しく、そのままその教えは一地域限定のものとしてしばらくその地域にとどまり、やがて、それは消えてしまったことでしょう。ローマ帝国の支配については賛否両論ありますが、確かに言えることはこの際立った力をもつ帝国支配がそれまであった国と国の境を全て取り去り、その力ゆえに治安が保たれていたということです。この地図を見てお分かりのように、人々はかつて越えることができなかった国境を踏み越えて自由に四方八方に向かうことができました。
考えてみてください、もしアメリカにある各州が独立しており、互いの州境では銃口が向けられており、他州に入ることができない、そこを通過することができないとしたら。西海岸にある物資を東海岸に輸送することは困難を極めます。しかし、アメリカ合衆国であるゆえに私達はカリフォルニアからアリゾナ、そしてテキサスと物資は滞りなく運ばれていきます。
もし、イエス様の誕生がこの時より２００年早ければ陸上においては野蛮な民族同士の争いにより福音は閉ざされていたでしょう。海上にはひしめく海賊がおりましたから、航海すら出来なかったことでしょう。もし、数百年遅ければ、北方のゲルマン民族の脅威が人々に福音を受け入れる耳などもたせなかったことでしょう。このことについてドアの開閉というものがあるとしますのなら、まさしくイエス誕生と後のキリストの弟子達やパウロをはじめとして、その福音を伝える者達のために一時、そのドアは開き、そして、その時が過ぎるとそのドアは再び閉じられたのです。
ローマ帝国といえばその建築技術の高さです。私達は歴史の授業でその驚くべき建築物について学びました。ローマの皇帝カイザルが何よりも力を注いだのは「道」を作るということでした。その情熱と功績は「全ての道はローマに続く」という諺となるほどに徹底しておりました。カイザルの元で何万人もの労働力が額に汗してローマ帝国のために、カイザルの軍隊を運び、カイザルのための物資を運ぶためにこの道は作られたのです。全世界に網の目のようにこの道は続いていたのです。しかし、その時の誰がその道を通って何年かの後にパウロやキリストの弟子たちが福音を携えて世界に出て行ったという事を想像できるでしょうか。以前、ピリピの遺跡を訪ねた時に、当時、ローマが敷いた石畳の道がそのまま残されているのを見、ガイドさんはきっとこの道をパウロも踏みしめて福音を伝えに出て行ったことでしょうと聞いて、感動しました。カイザルも実際にその街路工事のために石を運んだ石工達も、自分達が各地にはりめぐらした道がまさか福音伝達のために用いられるとは露だに思わなかったことでしょう。
この世界統一をなしたローマ帝国はそれまでバラバラであった周りの国々にもう一つの影響を与えました。ローマ帝国がラテン語と共にギリシア語を世界の言語として据えたということです。当時、多くの人達がギリシア語を第二の言葉として用いていました。。ギリシア語はアテネの街頭でもガリラヤの丘でも、ローマ、スペインでも使われました。そうすることにより、ローマ帝国は驚異的な経済発展を勝ち取ることができたのです。新約聖書の著者達はこのギリシア語を用いてある者は福音書を、ある者は手紙を書きました。
今の時代、この世界言語の役割を担っているのは英語となりましょう。もし国際的なビジネスをするのであれば英語は絶対に必要な言葉とされるでしょう。ポルトガル語を話すブラジル人と日本語を話す日本人の間で英語によって取引きがなされることによってそのビジネスはすすみ、開発が共同でなされることでしょう。イエス様の時代、言葉をもって伝えられる福音に関して、各地方にそれぞれ異なった言葉があったとしたら、福音が伝えられることはなかったかもしれません。人々はまさかギリシア語という言語が全世界に福音を伝えるための欠かせない力になっていたことを露だに想像しなかったことでしょう。ギリシア語という言葉に託された福音は見事にその言葉と共に世界を行きめぐったのです。
ここまでお話しましたようにローマ帝国は確かに繁栄と巨大な影響力をもち、そこにはしばらくの平和があったのですが、その背後にはそのために犠牲になっている者達がたくさんいました。国力と繁栄はありましたが、ローマの支配がおよぶ地域の街路地に住む多くは奴隷でした。繁栄の背後にはそれを支えるための重税や重労働、行き渡らない食料事情があり、そこには押しやられた問題が山積みとなっていました。繁栄を享受するのは少数の者達で多くの人達の表情や心には明日への不安が深く刻まれていました。彼らの心は乾ききっていました。
繁栄の中に生きる者たちは、考えつく悪事をしました。人はその情欲に生きました。当時のローマの華やかさは凄まじいものだったようです。皇帝や高官の屋敷においては、毎晩のように宴会が催され、この時に今流行の美食ということに目が向けられ、彼らの食卓には世界中の珍味が並べられ、彼らはその珍味を一通り食べた後に、わざとそれらを吐きだし、腹を空腹にして、また次の珍味を胃袋に入れたというのです。時の退屈をしのぐために巨大なコロシアムを造り、そこに人間と猛獣を入れ、どちらかが死ぬまで戦わせ、その様を鑑賞しました。これらの虚楽はイコール、人々の心の渇きを意味していました。このような時に神様はイエス・キリストをこの地に生まれさせたのです。それがローマの貴族の心であっても、エペソやコリントの街路地に住む者の心であっても、彼らの心には乾きがあったのです。そのような意味で時は満ちていました。
二週間前にある方達とイスラエルという国の不思議について話しました。現在のイスラエルは日本の四国ほどの大きさしかありません。しかし、この国ほど私達の住むアメリカ合衆国が気にかけている国はありませんし、常に世界に注目されている国はありません。なぜですか。その国がユダヤ人の国であり、彼らとその土地を用いて神様が数千年もの間、はたらかれたからです。そこが聖書の舞台となった国だからです。
数年前、このイスラエルを旅した時に私は「なぜ、神様はこの猫の額ほどの国を選ばれて、ここを神の御心を示す舞台として選ばれたのか」いうテーマをもってハンドルを握り、各地を駆け巡りました。

そこで私なりに考えたことは、神様のご性質である「神の義」と「神の愛」を人が知ることができる、学ぶことができる、体験することができる、それに適した土地こそが神が求めておられる土地なのではないかと。
それでは「神の義」を知ることができる土地とはどんな土地か。それは人の命を全く寄せつけない厳しい土地であり、神の細きみ声を聞き、同時に自らの心を省みることができる静寂に包まれた土地であり、神に自らの命を全てを委ねなければ到底、生きることができない土地であり、何にも煩わされず神だけに向き合い、その絶対的なきよさを知ることができる場所ではないかと思いました。
また同時に「神の愛と恵み」を感じることができる土地とは、生命力に満ちた土地であり、自らが蒔き、水をやり、収穫を得ることができる、網を投げれば命躍動する収穫を得、その天地の恵みを肌で感じることができる土地ではないかと思いました。
これら二つの対照的な土地を有し、しかも、その舞台で、限られた一生涯の中でこれらの土地を徒歩で行き来することが可能であり、すなわち神の義と神の恵みの両方を実際に体験できるような土地こそが（実際にそのような地理を有した土地というのはこの世界にはあまり多くはありません）神の計画を実行する舞台として最も適しているのではないだろうか、そう思いつつハンドルを握りました。
そこでイスラエルを東西南北、走り回った時に私はその土地がまさしく目の前にあることを認めました。ある日、私はモーセとイスラエルの民が神のきよさと神に徹底的に聴き従うということを学んだ命を拒絶するようなネゲブ砂漠をはしりました。ある晩、その荒野の中にあるベドウィンテントの中で一人、一晩を過ごす機会が与えられ、その時に静寂の中で神が人に語りかけるということがどんなことなのかが分かりました。
また、その環境とは対照的な、そのままそこにいるだけで神の愛に包まれているのだという思いにいたる野の花が咲き乱れるガリラヤ湖畔の青草の上を歩きました。私の人生においてとても不思議な体験だったのですが、私の４０年余りの人生において、これは誇張ではなく、ガリラヤのカペナウムというキリストのガリラヤ伝道の拠点となったその町の当時の遺跡にあるベンチで横になっている時に、私の体を優しく包み込む太陽の暖かさ、そして私の周りで戯れる雀たちの愛くるしさとそのさえずり、その中に身を置いた時に「わたしは無条件で愛されている、受け入れられている」という実感をもちました。あのような強い気持ちを私は他のいかなる国地域で感じたことはありません。
イスラエルは一日のうちに最北の雪が積もるヘルモン山から珊瑚が生息するエジプトの紅海にまで移動できます。そのような国をロケ地の調査隊の目として観察してみれば、まさしくこの場所こそ人の心と体と精神に神様からのメッセージを伝えるのに最適な舞台ですと天の公会議において報告できると思いました。
さらに、視点を広げれば、このイスラエルはアジア大陸とアフリカ大陸とヨーロッパ大陸のど真ん中にあるのです。すなわち、そこはこれら三つの大陸に行くのにべストの場所なのです。人が生まれる環境ということにおいてはベツレヘム以上の場所は世界にはいくらでもあります。しかし、あの地域が地球の中で占めているロケーションだけはイスタンブールももアテネもそれに変わることはできません。すなわち、このイエス・キリストの語られたメッセージが世界いたるところに伝えられる場所としてはその地域以外には考えられないほどにベストな場所だったのです。ご自身の御手によってこの地球を造られ、その全て知り尽くされたお方にとって、その場を選ばれてのは驚くことではありません。
後、２０００年経ってコンピュータというものを発明した人間は地球という球体の上にある全陸地を細かに分割し、他のすべての分割地までの距離が最も少ない地点を調べました。そうして出てきた結果、その地とはパレスチナからメソポタミヤにかけての地域、すなわち聖書の世界であることが判明しました。私達はこのことに驚きますが、それは既に神の心の中にあったことで、エゼキエルは既にそのことを記しています『これがエルサレムだ。わたしはこれを諸国の民の真中に置き、その回りを国々で取り囲ませた』（エゼキエル５章５節）
この場所において、キリストがお生まれになったがゆえに、後にパウロがその隣接する地中海岸沿岸に福音を伝えることができたのであって、そして、この福音がこれらの地中海沿岸（いわゆるヨーロッパ）の国々に伝わったからこそ、そこにある列強が後に、海外に進出した時にキリスト教を全世界に運んだのです。そして、その先にはこのアメリカ合衆国の建国があり、その延長線上に日本へのキリスト教宣教があるのです。聖書の世界が日本であったり、オーストラリアであったなら、そのメッセージは世界にあまねく届くことはなかったことでしょう。
皆さん、今日、お話しましたことはまさしく私達のテーマとなっております「一つにとらわれず全体を」ということを網羅しています。「時が満ちる」ためにはそこにいたるプロセスがありました。キリスト誕生のための備えは数千年におよんだのです。ローマの支配と繁栄は多くの問題と共にありましたが、全体として見るのなら、そのことによって福音が全世界に伝わりました。その繁栄の背後にある民衆の叫びがキリストの福音に心を開く大きな渇きとなりました。イスラエルという国は小さく、資源にも乏しく、他の国地域から見れば見劣りさせするような国ですが、この国を地球のはるか上から見るならば、この国以上に一つのメッセージを伝えるその発祥の地として適した国地域はないことに気がつきます。荒野だけを見るのなら私達は気が滅入りますが、その荒野を通るからこそ、確かに知ることができる神様からのメッセージがあり、その荒野なくして、私はガリラヤで知ることが出来る神の愛と恵みを知ることができません。さらに言いますと、旧約時代で私達が確認した人の絶望的な姿がなければ、神の驚くべき愛を知ることはできないのです。
これら全てのことは、そのまま私達の人生にあてはまるのです。信仰生活をおくるということは、この神と共にその生涯を送るというスケールの大きなことであり、この視点をもって生きることができるようになることができるということです。
さて、そこでです、今日、お話してきましたように「その時」ということについて、「その舞台」ということについて、「そこに生きる者たちの心の状態」ということについて、まさしく時は満ちました。役者は揃い、舞台も備わりました。これからいよいよ、この舞台の中心におられるイエス・キリストというお方にスポットライトはあてられていきます。もし、私達がこのキリストを個人的に知っていくのなら、私達の生涯は必ず変わります。変わらざるをえないのです。私達はこれから２９回にわたる新約聖書の扉を開けて中に入ります。その中で、皆さんの人生が神の愛に触れること、そのことを心から願ってやみません。お祈りしましょう。

Bridging from Old Testament to New Testament

There is a very famous phrase
in the Ecclesiastes of the Bible:
”There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven:
a time to be born and a time to die, …,
a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance,” (Ecclesiastes
3:1-2,4)
On the first line of the first page of our bible says: “In
the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” With creation of heaven and earth, day and night were created,
and “time” was created. And, ever since, we live in this “time”. We are given
life, and we live the “time” given to us.
Study of 39 books of the Old Testament completed last week. This
study of Old Testament exposed naked reality of our human nature. It was hard
for us to stare at ugly side of human nature, and look into hidden corners of
our heart. God provided us law, but us
human being could not obey the law faithfully. After being tested over thousands
of years, we had to admit that we human do not have mind or willingness to obey
the law.
In that sense, the Old Testament left us a big challenge which is
beyond our power to resolve. There is a period of 400 years since the last book
of the Old Testament, Malachi, until the New Testament which we want to study
next. The Bible does not refer to that period at all. There was no prophet,
either, to convey the words of God to us.
God simply left the big challenge to us to deal with. But, we
were powerless to deal with it. Perhaps this was a “time to be silent”
mentioned in the Ecclesiastes. The time of silence only intensified our feeling
of helplessness in our hearts. But, the time came when the silence of 400 years
was to be broken.
The voice of Jesus Christ
rang out from Galilee to this world: “The time has come. The kingdom of God is near.
Repent and believe the good news!” (Mark 1:15) Jesus Christ was saying: “I am here now. The time has come.
Kingdom of God is near. Repent, and believe in the Good News.” Paul refers to
this same event in the letter to Galatians, Chapter 4, verse 4: 4But when the
time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman.
(Galatians 4:4) It says
“God sent his Son,
born of a woman.” This means that God was involved in the birth of
Christ. This Son was given to this world when the time that started with the
creation of heaven and earth had fully come. It means further that the time of
human defeat in the Old Testament was an integral step leading up to Christ
Jesus.
Imagine droplets of water dripping down into a vessel. Even tiny
droplets can fill the vessel gradually with time, and there would come a time
when the water overflows from the vessel with the last drop of the water. The
birth of Christ into this world happened at very moment of fulfillment that was
anticipated over a long period of time. We refer to
this church as a Christian Church, and call people gathering in it as
Christians. Yes, Jesus Christ is in the very heart of our faith.
What does it mean for time to fully come? Starting next week, I would like to talk about each book of the New
Testament. But, today, I would like to consider the meaning of the expression “time
has come.”
What was the time like in
the era when Jesus lived? Why was Jesus Christ born in that time? Was it not acceptable for him to be born 300 years
earlier or 1000 years after?
It might be difficult to truly appreciate this year
of 2013 since we are in the middle of it. But, 100 years from now, in 2113, it
might be easier to evaluate the significance of this year 2013. 2000 years have
passed since the time of Jesus. Now we can better understand the meaning of
that time in view of history before and history afterward.
Jesus was born at a time when the entire world was
ruled under the Roman Emperor Caesar. (In
this case, “entire world” meant only the world around the Mediterranean Sea.) Before that, the world was made up from small
nations fighting each other, and it was difficult to travel from one nation to
the other. If Jesus were born at such a time, his message would most likely not
have spread to neighboring nations. The message would have died away before
spreading to other nations. Whether we like the Roman Empire, one thing we can
say for sure is that the emergence of Roman Empire created a united world, and
brought a period of world peace. As you can see from the map, people could now
travel freely beyond the national boundaries which existed before.
Imagine that the states in this USA are independent
from each other, and it is not possible to travel from one state to other. Then it would be very difficult to ship goods
from the west coast to the east. But, these states are united today. We can
ship goods from California to Arizona and to Texas without any problem.
If Jesus were to be born
200 years earlier, the message would not have travelled by land to other
nations because boundary was closed. It would not have travelled by sea since the ocean was ruled by
pirates. If Jesus were to be born
several hundred years later, the European nations would be in chaotic battle
and could not listen to the Good News. If there was a window of opportunity for
birth of Jesus and his disciples to spread the Good News, this was a short time
in our human history when the window of opportunity was opened momentarily before
it was closed later.
Roman Empire is known for its amazing building
capability. We all have learned about many constructions that took place at
that time. Emperor Caesar was
especially known his efforts to build up roads. The expression “All roads lead
to Rome” reflected how successful his efforts were. These roads were
built by tens of thousands of workers for the Roman Empire so that Caesar could
move the military as well as goods quickly and easily. The roads covered the
world with efficient network. But, who would have anticipated that, few years
later, Paul and disciples of Jesus would use these roads to spread the Good
News to the world. When I visited the remains of Philippi few years ago, I saw
the cobble stone roads built in Roman time. The tour guide said that Paul must
have traveled on that same road to spread the Good News. Neither Caesar nor the
stone masons who built the roads could have imagined that these roads would
later help spread the Good News to the world.
The Roman Empire brought nations together. There was
one more benefit that was brought to the world. And that was, Roman Empire
adopted Greek language, in addition to Latin, as a common language. In those
times, many people spoke Greek as their second language. Greek language was spoken
in the streets of Athens, on the hills of Galilee, and in Rome and Spain. This
also helped Roman Empire to produce amazing economic prosperity. The writers of
the New Testament used Greek language to write Gospels and Letters contained in
the New Testament.
Today, a language used world-wide would be English
language. For any international businessmen, English is a required means of
communication. Brazilians speaking Portuguese can communicate with Japanese in
English. In this way, business deals and economic collaborations are made
possible. At the time of Jesus, Good News had to be spread by words. If each
district had only local languages, it would have been impossible for the Good
News to spread. Perhaps people did not anticipate that the Greek language would
play the crucial role in spreading the Good News to the entire world. The Greek
language carried the Good News to far corners of the world.
It was true that Roman Empire was very powerful and
prosperous. It brought peace to the world. But, there were many people
suffering in the background. Rome had power and prosperity. But many people
living under Roman rule were slaves. Roman prosperity coexisted with heavy tax,
hard forced labor, insufficient food distribution, and multitude of social
problems. Only handful of people enjoyed prosperity, while the most of
population worried about making a living. Their heart was far from
satisfaction.
The rich few engaged in evil deeds. They were
consumed with greed. The glamorous life in Rome is legendary. At palaces and
mansions, elaborate banquets were held almost every night. Delicacies of the
time filled the table. People around the table would eat up these foods,
intentionally throw up to empty their stomach, and consumed even more food. To
kill time, they built enormous coliseums. They enjoyed watching people fight
with wild animals to death. That was their entertainment. Such decadence also implied huge void in people’s
heart. At such a time, God sent Jesus Christ to be born on this earth. Hearts
of Roman aristocracy and hearts of people in Ephesus or Corinth were empty.
Their hearts were crying out for change. The time was ripe.
This nation of Israel is a
very interesting and mysterious nation. Current nation of Israel is tiny, not
much larger than the island of Shikoku in Japan. But, United States of America
think about this nation very much, and the entire world watches every movement
of Israel. Why? It is because God revealed his presence among Jewish people
over thousands of years in this land described in the Bible.
Few years ago, when I
visited this nation of Israel and as I drove through the country, I wanted to
find out why God had selected this tiny piece of land as the stage to reveal
his presence.
Why did God select this Israel? Why not North America, Japan, or
Brazil? Why couldn’t the people of Israel under Moses wonder in Death Valley in
Nevada? Why couldn’t Jesus deliver his Sermon on the Mount on the hillside of
Mt. Aso of Japan? Why was Jesus not tempted by the devils in Jigokudani in Hakone
in Japan? Couldn’t Jesus talk to
Zacchaeus sitting on a palm tree in Jamaica? Couldn’t there be a parable of
banana tree rather than of vine? There must have been thousands of possible
places for Jesus to be born. If you want ideal climate, how about this city of
San Diego, the America’s Finest City? Could Baja California be better than
Arabian Peninsula?
So, I came to conclude that God wanted a land that is suitable to
teach people about the Righteousness of God and the Love of God. God wanted a
land where people could learn about these through experience.
What then is a land that teaches Righteousness of God? It would be a land with harsh
living condition, a quiet place where people can listen to faint words of God
as well as listen to their own heart, a place where people can live only by
relying wholeheartedly to God, and a land where people would be forced to turn
to God and only to God to understand absolute goodness of God.
At the same time, the land
in which people can feel the Love and Grace of God would be a land rich in
vitality and life, where people could seed and irrigate to enjoy good harvest,
and where casting net would come up with full harvest of the sea.
The land should embrace
both of these contrasting characteristics. Additionally, this land should be
small enough for people to traverse on foot. In other words, the land should be
where people can see and experience both the righteousness and love of God.
There are only few places on this earth that satisfies these conditions. As I
drove through Israel, these were the thoughts in my mind.
As I drove through Israel
from East to West, from South to North, I had to agree that I was looking at
such a land. One day, I drove through Negev Desert, which was void from life,
in which people of Israel learned that they must listen to God. I spent one
night in a Bedouin tent in the wilderness. I learned in that absolute quietness
what it was like to listen to the calm voice of God.
In stark contrast, I walked
on the green glass of hillside of Galilee filled with wild flowers. This
experience filled me with strong sense of love of God. This was a unique
experience in my life of 40 years. I was lying on a bench in the town of
Capernaum which was the starting point of Jesus’s mission in the Galilee
district. Warm sun was comfortably embracing me. Sparrows were playfully
chirping around me. I am not exaggerating to say that I felt at that moment
that I was loved unconditionally and God was embracing me. That was the
strongest feeling that swelled up in me. I had never experienced such feeling
before.
In Israel, one can travel
within one day from the snow-capped Mt. Hermon to Red Sea of Egypt. The angles
could have reported to the congress in heaven that this land would be ideal for
a movie location and the best stage for conveying the message from God to the
flesh and soul of human being.
From an even wider prospective, this Israel is located at the
mid-point of Asian, African and European continents. This is the best starting
point to travel to any of these three continents. As a birth place of people,
Bethlehem is not the only place in this world. But, this land is located most
strategically at the center of the world, even better than Istanbul or Athens. In
other words, this was by far the best location for spreading the message of
Jesus Christ into the world. It was ideal. God created this world and knew about it intimately. That is why God had
selected this land for his work. It was a natural selection.
2000 years after that time, using computers, scholars have examined
each district of the world to find the point which was closest to all districts
of the world. And they have discovered that the region from Palestine to
Mesopotamia, namely the land of Bible, was such a central point. We are amazed
by this discovery. But, Ezekiel pointed out that God knew about it. Ezekiel
said: This is Jerusalem, which I have set in the center of the nations,
with countries all around her. (Ezekiel 5:5)
Because Jesus was born in this land,
Paul was able to spread the words later to neighboring nations around the
Mediterranean. And because the Good News had spread in this region and Europe,
the Christianity spread to the rest of the world later. And, this was followed
by the establishment of the United States, and missionaries from USA spread
Christianity to Japan. If the world of the Bible were located in Japan or
Australia, the Good News would not have spread to the world.
What I have talked about
this morning is exactly along the line of our theme, namely, that it is
important to look at the whole picture. The time did come. But, there was a
process leading up to that moment. Thousands of years of preparation took place
before the Jesus was born. Roman conquest and prosperity had its own problems.
But, in the overall picture, it contributed greatly to spreading of the Good
News. People suffering behind the prosperity were hungry and were ready for the
Good News of Christ. Israel is a small country with little natural resources.
It might look insignificant looking at it from other parts of the world. But,
there was no better location for the spreading of the message to the world. Harsh
life in barren wilderness was necessary to open people’s heart to message from
God. It made People appreciate the love and blessing of God they saw in Galilee
even more. We can also say that without the hopelessness we have experienced in
the Old Testament days, we could not have known the amazing love of God.
Such history is also
applicable to our life. To live a life of faith is to spend our life with God.
It means that we can also begin to see things through God’s grand scheme.
This morning I talked about
the time that has come, and its setting stage, and the psychological status of
the people back then. The time did indeed come. The stage is set and all the
actors are ready. From now, we will focus our spotlight on Jesus Christ, who is
standing at the center of this stage. When we understand and personally know
Jesus Christ, our life will change. It is bound to change. We have just opened
the door to the study of 29 books of the New Testament. I hope sincerely that
your life will encounter the love of God as we study these books. Let us pray.

３）イエス・キリストはガリラヤからその一声を発しました『時は満ちた、神の国は近づいた。悔い改めて福音を信ぜよ』（マルコ１章１５節）。同じことをパウロもガラテヤ４章４節で『時の満ちるにおよんで、神は御子を女から生まれさせて、おつかわしになった』と言っております。「時が満ちた」ということからあなたがイメージすることはどんなことでしょうか。
４）今日の礼拝メッセージによりますとイエス・キリストが今から約２０００年前に生まれた、その時にはどのような時代背景があったでしょうか。当時のローマ帝国の支配が福音宣教に与えた影響はどんなものだったでしょうか。その支配が国境をなくしたこと、高い建築技術により各地域につながる街道が敷かれたことは何を意味しますか。ギリシア語が広地域で語られていたということは何を意味しますか。ローマの虚楽と繁栄の背後にある貧富の差、重税や重労働は庶民の心にどのような渇きを与えたでしょうか。
５）神様はなぜ神の救いの舞台として四国ほどの大きさの現在のイスラエルを中心とした地域を選ばれたのでしょうか。なぜサンデイェゴは選ばれなかったのでしょうか。神様が選ばれた「時」、「場所」、「人の心の状態」について、イエス・キリストが生まれた時はまさしく「時が満ちた」と思いますか。このような意味において、神様はあなたの人生において時が満ちるにおよんで、はたらきかけてくださったことがありますか。
