有終の美を飾りたい

「ノアの箱舟」についてはキリスト教徒でなくとも知っている方が多くいるかと思います。英語圏に限らず最近は日本人にもノアという名前の子がいます。皆さんの知り合いの中にもそんな人がいるかもしれません。おそらく彼らの親はこの聖書に記されているノアにちなんでその名前をつけたのでしょう。普通、我が子に名前をつける場合、その名前には親の祈りと願いがこめられています。イエス様を売り渡したユダとか、今朝も使徒信条で唱えました「ポンテオピラトにより十字架につけられ」というピラトという名前をもつ人に私はこれまで出会ったことがありません。これらのことを考えます時に、私達の周りにノアと呼ばれる人がいるということは、聖書に登場するノアには評価されるべきものがあったということになりましょう。そうです、聖書はノアについてこう記録しています。
『ノアはその時代の人々の中で正しく、かつ全き人であった。ノアは神と共に歩んだ』（創世記６章９節、１０節）。このことゆえに神はノアとその家族に箱舟を作ることを託したのです。さらにこのノアの生涯を総括してヘブル１１章７節はこのような言葉を残しています。『信仰によって、ノアはまだ見ていない事がらについて御告げを受け、おそれかしこみつつ、その家族を救うために箱舟を造り、その信仰によって世の罪をさばき、そして、信仰による義を受け継ぐ者となった』。今日はそんなノアに注目していきたいと思います。
へブル１１章の７節を見ます時に、ここには「ノアはまだ見ていない事がらについて御告げを受け」と書かれています。すなわち、まだ彼自身の身に起きていないことについて、彼は神からの御告げを受けたのです。
私達の世界は目に見える多くの物で満ちています。その中には実際に触れることができるものもあれば、見ているだけで触れることができないものもあります。そして、私達の心はこの目に見えるものによって左右されます。ノアはまだ見ていないことについて神様から御告げを受けました。そう、それはやがて大雨が降るというメッセージでした。
しかし、ノアが神様の御告げを受けた時、彼の前に大雨は降っていませんでした。それどころか彼がいた土地を思えば、それはどちらかといいますと乾燥した風土でありました。そんな土地を来る日も来る日も見続けていた彼にとりまして、大雨が降るということはおよそ考えられないことでした。ましてやその雨たるや、巨大な舟が浮かぶほどのものだと言われても当然、実感はないのです。しかし、彼は神様の言葉を受け、木を切り倒し、箱舟を造り始めたのです。
私達は「信仰者」です。信仰者とはその字が示すように、信じて仰ぐ者です。信仰者とは目に見えるものだけで、それが全てだと判断しない者です。見ていないものを見ているかのごとく、歩む者を信仰者というのです。見えるものが最悪に見えても、天を仰ぎ、天の扉が開かれて、そこから光が注がれていることを信仰をもって見る者が信仰者です。
「バイリンガル」とは一つの言語だけではなく、別の言語をも話すことができる人を言います。このことによりその人は二つの文化を知ることができます。このことがどんなに大きな祝福であるか、言うまでもありません。ここにいらっしゃる皆さんはこの祝福を神様からいただいています。
同じように、私達はひとつの世界だけを見ているのではなくて、もう一つの世界を信仰をもって見ながら生きる者です。これは一度の人生で二つの世界を生きているようなことです。二つの言葉を理解し、同時に二つの世界を見るということ、このことは私達の人生を深いものとしてくれます。
今日の聖書箇所によりますとノアは畏れかしこみつつ、家族を救うために箱舟を造りました。結果的にこのノアの信仰と決断は人類がこの地から絶やされてしまうことを食い止めたのですが、聖書は「世界を救うために」ノアはこの箱舟を作ったというのではなくて、彼に一番、身近であった「家族を救うために」その箱舟を作ったと書いています。そうです、「家族を救う」ということは、すなわち「世界を救うこと」でありました。一つの家庭は小さなものです。しかし、私達の家庭が救われていくということがこの世界の救いとなります。
こうして雨など降る気配もない場所で、ノアはその家族と共に巨大な箱舟を造り始めました。当初、ノアは彼が神様から受けた御告げをその土地の者達にも語り、彼らもこの箱舟造りに加わるように勧めたことでしょう。しかし、この箱舟造りに携わったのは彼と彼の家族、八人だけでした。ノアの家族も信仰をもってノアを支え続けたのです。ノアの信仰を家族は継承していました。ノアが見ているものを家族も共に有したのです。
今日、私達を取り巻く世界は忙しなく、その忙しなさは家庭の中にも入り込み、私達は互いのことを思いやることすら難しくなっています。互いにバラバラで、家族が同じものを見ているというよりも、それぞれが別々のものを見ているように感じることも多いのです。このような状態で家族を一つにするためにすべきことはたくさんあることでしょう。しかし、その中で最も大切なことは、同じ信仰の目をもって生きることなのだと聖書は語るのです。
子供はしばしの間、親の保護と指導のもとにあります。しかし、やがていつか自分の足で好きな所に行く日がきます。自分で自由な所に行き、好きなことをすることができるようになったら、もう親はどうすることもできなくなります。かつての私達もそうだったと思います。その時にその子達が人生の荒波を生きていく力は見えないものを見ていく信仰なのです。
想像してみましょう。ノアが箱舟を作っている日々、空を見上げても雨が降る気配がない、そんな年月が続きます。それでもノアは箱舟を造り始めました。その間には家族会議なるものもあり、本当にこのことに意味があるのだろうかなどという疑念の思いもあったかもしれません。この家族がしていることは街の噂となり、人々は彼らをあざ笑ったに違いありません。しかし、ノアとその家族はその手を休めなかったのです。私達の私達の子供達もノアと同じようなことを必ず経験する時がくるでしょう。そう、目の前に繰り広げられている現実に打ちのめされてしまいそうな時です。しかし、私達はその現実を見つつ（そうです、私達は現実から逃避する者ではありません）、信仰によって一つ一つの事柄をくぐりぬけていくのです。
聖書はその時代の人々について『人の悪が地にはびこり、すべてその心に思いはかることが、いつも悪い事ばかりである』（創世記６章５節）、また『時に世は神の前に乱れて、暴虐が地に満ちた』（創世記６章１２節）と記しています。
そのような時にノアは「おそれかしこみつつ」この神の言葉に従いまいた。この一言にノアが毎日をどのように過ごしていたのかということをうかがい知れます。いつもお話ししますように、ここに記されている「おそれ」は「恐怖」ではなく「畏怖」の畏れということです。そうです、ノアは目には見えない、しかし確かに全地に在る神の存在を信じ、意識し生活をしていたのです。そして、その神への畏れがノアとその時代に邪悪に生きた人達を区別する要因となっていたのです。
私はこのノアの生き方を黙想していまして、とても人間的な言い方になりますが、彼の生き様というものにとても魅力を感じました。なぜでしょうか。彼が自分の信念を貫いて生きたからです。
なぜ、そのような思いを私は持ったのでしょうか？それは、私が日本人のメンタリティーを持っているからです。どちらかというと、私達日本人は他国の人達に比べて、常に周りの人達が自分をどう見ているのかということを気にして生きている者だからです。自分自身を振り返ってみてもそう思います。
そう、いったいどれだけの人が自らの人生に対して確固たる信念を持っているでしょうか。否、そんなことを考える時間もないのかもしれません。いったいどれだけの人が「我、ここに立つ」、「我、ここに属す」というものをもっていることでしょうか。もしかしたら、私達は揺れ動く世の中の動向や、人との比較によってこれらの立ち位置をいつも決めているのかもしれません。こう考える人が多いからとか、今はそれがトレンドだからというようなところに自らを置くのではなく、ノアのように自分の信念に立ち、そこに彼の家族も共にいたという生き方に私は強く惹きつけられるのです。
今、大統領選の真っただ中です。候補者は一人でも多く！と支持者を求めています。そうです、それは数が多いか少ないかの戦いなのです。確かに私達の主義主張に共鳴し、それを支持する人がたくさんいるということは心強いことでしょう。しかし、自らが立つ信念に関していば、それは数の問題ではありません。１０人、否５人、否、自分の信念を理解し共に立っている人が一人いるのなら、それは私達にとりまして何にも代えがたいことなのです。イエス様が自らの信念に立ち、十字架を担われた時、そのイエス様を理解した人間は一人もいなかったのですから。
ここには箱舟を造るノアとその家族の日々の生活の詳細は書かれていませんが、家族が一つとなって一つのビジョンに向かって毎日を過ごすということはチャレンジを伴うものであったでしょうが、そこには喜びがあったことでしょう。たとえそこに反対があったり、困難があったとしても、彼らの心には父なる神にある平安があり、やりがい、一致がありました。この時のノアとその家族は日々の生活を深く味わって生きていたのです。
このような年月が過ぎ去り、神様が言われたように大洪水が起こりました。彼らが苦労して作り上げた巨大な箱舟が荒れ狂う大水の上に浮いたのです。彼らはその箱舟の中で時を過ごしました。そして、雨はやみ、水で覆われていた土地がその姿を再びあらわしました。そう、箱舟から出る日がやってきたのです。その時、ノアは主に祭壇を築いて、すべての清い獣と、すべての清い鳥とのうちから、はん祭を祭壇に捧げ、まず神に感謝を捧げたと聖書は記しています。
４０日４０夜降り続いた雨と、止んでからも数ヶ月を船の上で過ごしたノア。そんな状況で箱舟の扉が開かれたら、皆さんならまず何をしますか。ノアはその時に神に感謝の捧げものをしたのです。はん祭とは、その捧げものを焼き尽くすやり方です。全てを焼き尽くすということは、ノアの神様への全き献身を意味したのです。
さて、ここまでお話ししてきまして皆さんは思っているかもしれません。ちょっと待てよ、このメッセージシリーズは「人生の危機管理」であって、このシリーズは聖書に登場する人間の失敗から学ぶということではなかったかと。
そうです、ご心配なく、私はそのことを忘れてはいません。ただ、ノアという人の人生を見ますと彼の人生には評価すべきことがたくさんあったのです。ですから、まずそのことを最初にお話ししたのです。しかし、箱舟を作り上げ、大洪水を免れ、神への感謝をまず第一とした後のノアについてこのような記録を創世記は残しています。
さてノアは農夫となり、ぶどう畑をつくり始めたが、彼はぶどう酒を飲んで酔い、天幕の中で裸になっていた。カナンの父ハムは父の裸を見て、外にいるふたりの兄弟に告げた。
ノアは神様に託されたミッションを成し遂げました。そして箱舟がとどまった土地の周辺に定住したのでしょう。そこで農夫となりました。そうです、地に種をまき、そこから実りを得る者となったのです。地から生じる産物は神様の恵みでありました。その中にたわわに実るブトウがありました。彼が得たブドウの実はまさしく神様が彼に与えた祝福でありました。
その神の祝福にノアとその家族は手を加えました。そうです、そのブドウを発酵させ、それをブドウ酒とする術を彼らは見出したのです。神がくださる大地の恵みであるブドウがノアを愉しませる味わい深い飲み物となりました。今日のワインの歴史はこのようにとても古いのです。以来、ブドウ酒は聖書の中に何度も出てきます。イエス・キリストの最初の奇跡は結婚式において水をワインに変えるものでしたし、最後の晩餐においてブドウ酒をもって、イエス様はご自身が十字架上で流す血を弟子達に言い表しました。
聖書はワインを飲むことを禁じておりませんし、実際にワインそのものには何も問題はありません。しかしノアはその神の祝福を正しく用いることに失敗しました。そう、ノアはブドウ酒に酔い、その影響でしょうか、彼は身にまとうものなく、醜態をさらして、酔いつぶれてしまったのです。
聖書を読んでいきますと人がある土地に定住して、その生活が安定しますと気が緩むのでしょうか、このような過ちを犯してしまう傾向を読み取ることができます。神に愛されたあのダビデが一生の大失敗をしたのは成功を収め、名をあげた安泰の時でした（サムエル下１１章）。そう彼の人生はそのほとんどが神の前に真実に生きた日々だったのです。しかし、その日はある時、普通に彼が生活している時に起きたのです。そのことにより後に彼は涙をもって償うことができないような刈り取りをしなければならなくなりました。使徒パウロが『立っていると思うものは、倒れないように気をつけるがよい』（Ⅰコリント１０章１２節）と書いていますように、私達が大丈夫、問題は何もないというような時に、実は私達は最も足がすくわれやすい状況にいるのです。
ここまでお話ししてきましたように、ノアは神に評価された人でした。そのことに異論はありません。従順こそが彼の人生を導くものでありました。しかし、彼の晩年、彼はどうやら第一に神に寄り頼み、そこから慰めを得るのではなく、酒により頼み、そのことによって自らを慰める習慣を得てしまったのです。
このノアの醜態に対して彼の息子達は異なる対応をしました。ハムは父親の姿を兄弟達に言いふらしました。かつてはノアの信仰に従っていたハムもその父に対するリスペクトを失ってしまったのかもしれません。このハムに対して他の二人の息子、セムとヤペテとは着物を取り、肩にかけ、後ろ向きに父ノアに歩み寄り、父の裸をおおい、その裸を見ようとはしませんでした。このことはまた後日、お話ししますが、このことゆえにハムとその子孫にまで悲しむべき影響が起きていく様を聖書は書き残しています。
それまでのノアの人生が神によみせられる人生であったにもかかわらず、その最後の最後になって、ノアは失敗を犯し、そのことが我が子とその子孫に深刻な影響を与えることとなったのです。創世記を書き記したのはモーセだと言われていますが、彼はこのノアの生涯というものを口伝で聞いていたのでしょう。彼が神と共に歩んだ人生を順をおって注意深く書きながら、このノアの出来事にいたったことでしょう。このようなことを書き残すべきなのか、それともやめておくべきなのか（書き残さないということは、このノアの失敗は後世の者達には全く隠されたものとなることを意味します）。そんなことをモーセは悩んだかもしれない。しかし、神の霊は彼の手に力強く臨み、彼はこのことを書き残したのです。思えば聖書とはそのような書物で、モーセであっても、アブラハムであっても、ヤコブであっても、ダビデであっても、エリアであっても、ペテロであっても、パウロであっても、彼らの神に対する従順と共に、彼が陥ってしまった失敗を見落とすことなく書き残しているのです。そして、それは何のためであったのかということを思います時に、言うまでもない、それは後に生きる者達のため、すなわち私のためであり、あなたのためであるということに気がつかされるのです。
パウロという人はよく陸上競技を譬えにして真理を語りました。既に当時、オリンピアのような競技があり、パウロはそのようなスポーツを観戦すること、いや、もしかしたら自らもその競技に参加することを楽しんでいたのかもしれません。その中から信仰につながる真理を見出したのかもしれません。彼はこう書いています。
「あなたがたは知らないのか。競技場で走る者は、みな走りはするが、賞を得る者はひとりだけである。あなたがたも、賞を得るように走りなさい。しかし、すべて競技をする者は、何ごとにも節制をする。彼らは朽ちる冠を得るためにそうするが、わたしたちは朽ちない冠を得るためにそうするのである。そこで、わたしは目標のはっきりしないような走り方をせず、空を打つような拳闘はしない。すなわち、自分のからだを打ちたたいて服従させるのである。そうしないと、ほかの人に宣べ伝えておきながら、自分は失格者になるかも知れない」 （Ⅰコリント９章２４節-２７節)
私達はこの彼の人生から教訓を得ます。ここには賞を得るように走りなさいとありますので、人生のレースは順位がつけられるような競争のようにも思われます。しかし、実際のところ私達の歩むべき道は競争ではなく、それは私達が賞を得ることができるように自ら節制をして臨むものであり、その最終的な目標は完走することなのです。そのゴールにいたるためにパウロ自身、自分は時に自らを打ち叩いて走り続けるのだというのです。なぜなら、他人ごとではなく自分は失格者になってしまうかもしれないからだというのです。主にある兄弟姉妹、このような思いを彼はどこから得ていたのでしょうか。そうです、彼の手元にありました、私達が今朝、見てまいりましたような古の聖徒達の失敗から彼はこのような慎重さを獲得したのです。彼は思ったのでしょう、彼らが陥った失敗は他人ごとではなく、私自身も今日、犯しかねないことなのだと。
ノアは当初、よく節制し、家族の模範になるかのようにしてその先頭を走っていました。しかし、いよいよそのゴールが近くなりました時に、失敗してしまいました。全ての人がノアと同じ失敗を犯すということはありませんでしょう。しかし、「ブドウ酒」に代わるような思いがけないものによって、私達はこれまでの主との歩みを台無しにしてしまうようなことがこれからあるかもしれません。誰一人としてノアのような失敗をしないと断言できる人はいないのです。
人生は最後の最後まで分からないのです。私達は順位を競いません。しかし、確かにその人生を主と共に完走することができることを願わない人はいないでしょう。「臆病」という言葉はあまり肯定的なものではありません。しかし、この点において私達は自分が何をしでかすか分からないという「慎重さ」を持ちましょう。これらのことを創世記は「ノアは神を畏れかしこんで生きた」と言っているのです。キリストにあって有終の美を飾りましょう。私達の余生がどれだけあるのかということは神のみぞ知ることです。その人生、私達は神を畏れかしこみつつ、神と人に愛されて日々を過ごし、主イエスが迎えてくださるゴールのテープを切る者であいりたいのです。お祈りしましょう。
To Adorn a Perfect End

The story of Noah and his ark is well known even to non-christians. The name Noah has been common in America, but in recent years the name has also gained its popularity in Japan. You may even know of one. The parents must have named the child from Noah in the bible. Usually, when a parent names their child, the meaning of the name carries the prayers and hope they wish upon their child. I have yet to meet anyone with the names of Judah or Pilate: Judah who had sold Jesus, and Pontius Pilate who had crucified him. When we think of these things, the reason why there are those named Noah is because the there was something of value in Noah from the bible. In scripture it is written,
“Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God.” (Genesis 6:9-10) That is why God entrusted Noah and his family to make the ark. It is written in Hebrews 11:7 that, “By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith.” Today we will focus our attention on this man, Noah.
It says here in Hebrews 11:7 that Noah was “warned about things not yet seen”. This means that Noah received a message from God before it even occurred.
This world we live in is full of things we can see. There are things we can see and touch and things we can see but cannot touch. Our heart is controlled by the many things that we see. But Noah received a message of something he had not seen. It was that there would be a flood.
But when Noah received this message from God, it was not raining. On the contrary, the land he lived on was dry. For a man who had lived all his life seeing the same landscape, it was unthinkable for rain to fall. Still more, to be told that there would be enough water for a large boat to float would have no sense of reality at all. Yet, Noah listened to the worlds of God. He cut down trees and began to build the ark.
We are “believers”. As the word itself implies, we believe and revere God. A believer does not judge by only what they seen. A believer walks as though they have seen the unseen. Even if what they see is the worst of circumstances, they see through faith that the light is shining down through the gates of heaven.
A “bilingual” person speaks not one, but two languages. Through this they also learn two different cultures. This is a great blessing. many of you here have received this great blessing from God.
In the same way, we live seeing not one but two worlds; a world through faith. This is like living through two worlds with one life. by understanding its words, and seeing both worlds, our lives are made deeper.
According to today’s bible passage, Noah believed him even though there was then no sign of a flood, he built the ark and saved his family. He grasped that the consequence of the flood would be the destruction of human kind from the face of the earth. But the bible does not sate that Noah built the ark to “save the world” but that he built it to “save his family”. To save his family meant the saving of the world. A single household is small, but to save a family is to save the world.
And thus, Noah and his family began to build the ark even with no sign of rain. At first, Noah must have told the other people this message from God, encouraging them to join. But the only ones who did take part in the construction of the ark was Noah and his family of eight. Noah’s family supported him through their faith. They had succeeded his faith. They shared the same vision.
Today, the world surrounding us is restless. It’s business has come between us and our families, making it difficult to even consider each other. We are mutually scattered, making it feel as though we are each seeing something completely different. In such situation, there are many things to be done to bring a family back together as one. But the most important thing out of them all is to see through the same faith as the bible tells us.
Children, for a short while, are under the protection and leadership if their parents. But there will be a day in which they will take the path they chose. They will be free to go where they wish, and do what they wish to do. When this day comes, a parent will no longer be able to do anything. I believe we were once this way as well. When this time comes, the strength and power to steer through the stormy seas of life will be their faith. Their faith that allows them to see what cannot be seen.
Imagine; Noah building his ark day after day yet there is no sign of rain. Years go by yet he still continues to build. There may have been times when family meetings were held to discuss doubts and meaning. And their actions would have sprouted rumors and gossip in the city, becoming target of ridicule. Yet Noah and his family did not stop. There will be a time when our children face the same situation. Yes, a time when the reality of harsh circumstances seems unbearable. However, we are able to see that reality (yes, we do not run from reality) and navigate our way through with faith.
The bible describes the people of Noah’s time that “the extent of human wickedness, and that the trend and direction of men’s lives were only towards evil,” (Genesis 6:5) and that “all mankind was vicious and depraved.” (Genesis 6:12)
In such a time Noah believed and obeyed the words of God. Through this we are able to see the way Noah lived out his life. As we have spoken of before, faith and fear of God is not of fear as in terror, but fear as in awe. Noah lived aware, believing in the invisible but indisputable presence of God in the world. And this faith was what set Noah apart from the other people of his time.
Imagining such life of Noah, I find myself attracted to his way of life. Why? Because he lived with conviction of his faith.
Why did I feel this way? It is because I have a Japanese mentality. It is because Japanese people tend to worry more about how others see them. Looking back on myself, I see this.
How many people do you know live with unwavering conviction in what they believe? Mayne it is that we do not even have the time to think of such things. How many people have what they can say, “This is where I stand,” “This is where I belong” to? Maybe we are determining where we stand by the wavering trends of this world, or by comparing ourselves to the people around us. Unlike the way so many people place themselves by thinking, “because many people believe this” or “because this is the popular opinion”, we are strongly drawn to the way of Noah in which he firmly stands in his faith, living within it with his family.
We are currently in the presidential elections process. The running candidates are desperate for every supporter they can get. Yes, it is a battle of numbers. It certainly is a reassuring thing to have people support your principles. But it is not about numbers if you truly stand in conviction of what you believe. No matter if it is 10, 5, or even just 1 person who stands with you in understanding, it is a great blessing to us. When Jesus stood in his conviction, and bore the cross for our sins, no one understood him.
Here, the details of the days Noah and his family spent building the ark is not written. There must have been some challenges in working as one towards a single vision, but there must have also been a greater joy to it. Even with opposition and hardship, they had tranquility from their heavenly father, worth, and union. Noah and his family lived these days deeply relishing them.
The years past and as God had warned them, the flood came. The ark they had made through years of hard work floated above the raging floodwaters. They spent time within the ark. And eventually the rain stopped and dry land appeared before them. Yes, the day for them to leave the ark had come. Noah built an alter and sacrificed the animals and birds brought for that purpose and thanked God.
The rain had fallen for 40 days and 40 nights. They spent a few more months in the ark after the rain had stopped. What would you have done when the door was opened? Noah had made a thanks offering. The offerings were burnt on the altar. This offering signifies Noah’s complete devotion to God.
Now, some of you may be thinking, “Wait, the title of this message series is ‘Life’s Crisis Management’ and so shouldn’t we be learning from the mistakes of the people written about in the bible?”
“Noah became a farmer and planted a vineyard, and he made wine. One day as he was drunk and lay naked in his tent, Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father’s nakedness and went outside and told his two brothers.” (Genesis 9:20-22)
Noah accomplished the mission given by God and settled in the land. He became a farmer. Yes, he sowed seeds and reaped its harvest. The fruit produced by the land was God’s blessing, and among them were the grapes. The grapes harvested were truly a great blessing given to Noah by God. To that blessing Noah and his family applied some process. They fermented the grapes and made wine from them. The blessing of grapes became a pleasing beverage with great flavor to Noah. The history of wine is old. And since, wine is mentioned many times in the bible. The first miracle performed by Jesus was the changing of water into wine at a wedding; and with wine, Jesus reveled to his disciples that he would bleeding on the cross during the last supper.
The bible does not prohibit the drinking of wine, and there is nothing wrong with wine itself. But Noah failed to use God’s blessing in a righteous way. Yes, Noah became drunk from the wine and lay naked, passed out, disgracefully exposed.
When reading the bible we see that after moving and settling in a land and gaining some stability in their lives, many become careless and commit a great blunder. David,who was loved by God, made a great error in his life after he gained great success and reputation. (2 Samuel 11) For most of his life, David had lived a pleasing life in the eyes of the Lord. But that day came suddenly. He had to accept the consequences to his actions, an action that could not be made up for with just tears. As Apostle Paul has said “So be careful. If you are thinking, “Oh, I would never behave like that”—let this be a warning to you. For you too may fall into sin” (1 Corinthians 10:12) the times when we think we are doing fine; without a worry in the world, we are most likely to be tripped.
As we spoke of earlier, Noah found favor in God’s eyes. I do not argue this. His obedience led his life. Yet in his later years of life, Noah had gotten himself into the habit of relying on wine for comfort rather than from God.
To such shameful behavior of Noah, his sons took different approaches to this situation. Ham went out and told his brothers. Perhaps Ham most some of his respect towards his father who he followed in faith. Opposed to Ham, the two other sons, Shem and Japheth took their robe and help it over their shoulders walking backwards into the tent, and let it fall over their father’s body. They did not try to see him exposed. I will talk more about this another time but as a result, Ham and his descendants were effected by this as written in the bible.
In spite of Noah’s life being pleasing to God prior, Noah’s blunder in his last years had a serious influence on his children and descendants. It is said that Moses is the writer of Genesis, and he had probably heard this as oral tradition. Writing the life of Noah faithful to God, as Moses came to this event, he may have wondered if he should write it down or not (to be hidden and forgotten, or remembered). Yet Moses, led by Holy Spirit, wrote this down as history to be remembered. When we think of this, we can see that whether it was Moses, Abraham, Jacob, David, Elijah, Peter, or Paul, their mistakes are written along with their obedience. And what this signifies; the purpose for this is without doubt for those who will have come after; for you and me.
Paul often used sports in parables to speak the truth. There were already at that time sports like the Olympia, and Paul may have enjoyed watching, or even participating in such games. He may have even found truth leading to his faith through them. He writes,
“In a race everyone runs, but only one person gets first prize. So run your race to win. To win the contest you must deny yourselves many things that would keep you from doing your best. An athlete goes to all this trouble just to win a blue ribbon or a silver cup, but we do it for a heavenly reward that never disappears. So I run straight to the goal with purpose in every step. I fight to win. I’m not just shadow-boxing or playing around. Like an athlete I punish my body, treating it roughly, training it to do what it should, not what it wants to. Otherwise I fear that after enlisting others for the race, I myself might be declared unfit and ordered to stand aside.” (1 Corinthians 9:24-27)
We are taught a lesson from his life. It is written here to run your race to win, so life’s race seems to be a competition with rank. But in reality, the path we walk is not a race but one that must be faced with temperance so that we may be awarded, and the goal is to complete it. To reach this goal, Paul says himself that he pushes his body to continue running. The reason being because it could result in his own disqualification otherwise. Dear brothers and sisters, where did Paul obtain such way of thinking. It was the mistakes, much like the ones we looked at today as written in the bible from which he obtained such caution. He must have thought, the mistakes that they have made could just as easily happen to me today.
Noah had at first ran to be the example to his family with proper temperance. But as the goal grew closer, he blundered. Not everyone will make the same mistake as Noah. But we may spoil the relationship we have created with God with something unexpected much like the wine. No one can declare that they will never make a mistake like Noah.
Life is unpredictable even to the last moment. We do not compete for rank. But there is no one who does not wish to complete the full race of life with God. The word cowardance does not have a positive connotation. But we must be cautious of what could happen unexpectedly. In Genesis it is written that Noah believed and feared God. Let us adorn a perfect end in Christ. How long we have left in our lives is only known by God himself. We wish to live this life fearing the Lord, to be loved by him and people through our days, and to break the finish line ribbon the Lord welcomes us with. Lets pray.
