ある人が建築現場を訪れました。そこでは石工達が働いていました。その人は一人の石工に尋ねました。「何をしているのですか」。「見りゃ、分かるだろう。石を削っているのさ。全くこの暑さでたまらないよ」。
別の人にも同じ質問をしました。「何をしているのですか」「あぁー俺たちのことか？壁を作っているのさ。全く面倒な仕事さ」。
第三の人にも同じ質問をしました。「何をしているのですか」「よくぞ聞いてくださった。私は大聖堂を建てているのさ。こんな素晴らしブロジェクトに関わることができて私は本当に幸せ者だよ」。
三人の石工は全く同じ仕事をしていたのですが、その仕事に異なった意味を見出していました。仕事に対する視点が異なると、取り組み方まで違ってくるのです。「不満と愚痴」、それと「感謝と喜び」は天と地の差があります。万事、私達の人生のあらゆる取り組みはここにかかっているのです。

神に喜ばれる教会（１２）： 教会に仕える動機

私達は警察官に庭の芝を刈ってくれることを求めません。私達は警察官に社会の安全を守ってくれるはたらきを期待します。私達はマニーマチャードにぺトコパークのパーキングで車を誘導することを求めません。私達は彼にプロの技をフィールドで見せてくれることを期待します。
教会はどうでしょうか。私達が教会に求めていることは何でしょうか。「このことがなければ教会ではないこと」は何なのか、そんなことを考えますと、このことは、はっきりするのではないかと思います。
かつて私達は月一度のカレーランチを楽しんでいましたが、カレーランチがなかったら、教会ではなくなりますか。いいえ、カレーランチがなくてもここはキリスト教会です。
レイバーディキャンプのようなイベントをしなければ教会ではないでしょうか。いいえ、イベントがなくともここはキリスト教会です。このことはカレーランチやレイバーディキャンプは必要ではないということではなく、それらにも大切な意義があります。しかし、それらが教会を教会たらしめているわけではありません。
しかし、もし私達の教会で聖書が語られず、礼拝が捧げられず、祈りがなされないのなら、ここに一人も礼拝者がいなければ、それを教会と呼ぶことはできません。教会とは建物のことを言うのではなく、そこに集まる人達が「イエスは主」であるという信仰と共に、これらのことをなしている、それが教会なのです。１００００人が集まる教会であっても、３人が集まる教会であっても、その人数に関わらず、これらのことがなされているのなら、それは教会です。
私達の教会は毎週、少なくとも複数回、礼拝を含めて御言葉を開き、祈る機会をどなたにも提供しています。これらの諸集会はどなたでも自由に参加できる集会です。
そして、毎日、各自が一人で聖書の言葉に向き合うことができるように個人のデボーションを推奨しています。霊的な食事はまとめ食いができるようなものではなく、霊の糧を私達が毎日、摂ることができるためです。これらを毎週コツコツと続けていきます。それが私達の信仰生活です。信仰の成長に「ある日、突然」とか「近道」はないのです。
本来、信仰をもつということは極めて個人的なことです。なぜならそれは神様と自分との間において築かれる関係だからです。しかし、そのように信仰を持つ者とされた私達に対して、神様は私達に単独でその信仰を保ち続け、養いなさいとは言いません。
旧約聖書において神様はイスラエル民族を選び、彼らは常に「イスラエルの民」として共に信仰の旅を続けました。同じことを神様は教会に望まれています。主は私達に「クリスチャン」と呼ばれる者達が集う「教会」の中にとどまるようにと望まれます。このことは「牧師のお勧め」ではなくて「聖書が言っていること」です。
イエス様はかつてまだ教会というものがこの地上に存在していない時に、弟子ペテロに言いました。この言葉を私達はとても大切な言葉として受け止め、教会の玄関先に刻んでいます。帰りにご覧ください。
『わたしはこの岩の上にわたしの教会を建てよう。黄泉の力もそれに打ち勝つことはない』（マタイ１６章１８節）。
そう、イエス様は明確に、強い意志と共に「私の教会」を建てるということを明言されたのです。主にある兄弟姉妹、私達は今朝、イエス・キリストの教会に集ってきているのだということを自覚しているでしょうか。そう、このサンディエゴ日本人教会は主イエスが「わたしの教会」と言われる教会です。
小学校や中学校は規定された年齢の子達が集まる場所です。県人会にはその県出身の方々が集まります。しかし、教会はそうではありません。教会に集う人達はバラエティーに富んでいます。
乳児からご高齢の方にいたるまで、アメリカ人、日本人、韓国人、メキシコ人、あらゆる人種が集う場所です。教会にはかつての仏教徒もいれば、クリスチャン信仰を失って再び教会に戻ってきたという人もいます。皆がそれぞれの理由があり当地に住み、私達は一人一人、日々、向かい合っているもの、背負っているものが異なります。
イエス・キリストはかつて言われました。
「丈夫な人には医者はいらない。いるのは病人である。わたしがきたのは、義人を招くためではなく、罪人を招くためである」(マルコ２章１７節)
この言葉はこの世界には「病人」と「健康な人」がいるというわけではなく、私達は皆、神の前に病人である、罪人であるということを言い表しています。
この世界には二種類の人がいます。このことに「気がついている人」、そして「気がついていない人」です。そして、その病人のために、罪人のために私はこの世界に来たとイエス・キリストは言われるのです。
そのような意味で私達の教会は主を医師とする病院のようなもので、私達はその医師のもとに集まってくる者達です。このお方は私達の心の状態を知り、それを癒し、回復させてくださいます。私達は互いにそれを見守り、祈り、励まし合います。
そして、私達がこのキリストに繋がり続けるのなら、魂の健康を保つことができます。
このお方から離れて私達は何一つできないのです。今、信仰から離れようとしている方がいるのなら、このことを思い起こしましょう。
『わたしはぶどうの木、あなたがたはその枝である。もし人がわたしにつながっており、またわたしがその人とつながっておれば、その人は実を豊かに結ぶようになる。わたしから離れては、あなたがたは何一つできないからである』（ヨハネ１５章５節）
あなたは信仰抜きでこれからの人生を生きようとしているかもしれません。あなたに命を与え、その命を今朝も持続させてくださっている神を抜きにして、人生の計画を立てようとしているかもしれません。
しかし、主ははっきりと言われました。わたしから離れては、あなたは何一つできない。私につながりなさい。あなたは豊かな実を結ぶようになる。私達の人生の諸々の努力や計画は、何を差し置いても、まず神につながるというところから始まるのです・・・。
イエス・キリストが天に戻られる前と、その後の違いで最も顕著なことは、イエス様が天に戻られた後に、この世界に教会が誕生したということです。そして、その教会の誕生と成長に最初から関わった人の一人にパウロという人がいます。
彼はそれまでにこの地上になかったこの「新しいもの」を各地に開拓し、それが建て上げられていくことに人生を注ぎ込んだ人です。それ以前に存在していなかったものを始め、建てあげるにあたり、その先駆者としてパウロがいつも考えていたことは「教会とは何か」ということでした。
このことを明確にしなければ教会を開拓し、形成していく動機を彼はもつことはできませんから。そして、パウロは教会について一つの真理へと導かれました。
ここに私達が教会に集い、その教会にどのように関わるかということの指針があります。パウロは教会についてこう言っています。使徒行伝２０章２８節、
「どうかあなたがた自身に気をつけ、また、すべての群れに気をくばっていただきたい。聖霊は神が御子の血であがない取られた神の教会を牧させるために、あなたがたをその群れの監督者にお立てになったのである」
エペソ５章２４節‐２７節、
「そして教会がキリストに仕えるように、妻もすべてのことにおいて、夫に仕えるべきである。夫たる者よ。キリストが教会を愛してそのためにご自身をささげられたように妻を愛しなさい。キリストがそうなさったのは、水で洗うことにより、言葉によって、教会をきよめて聖なるものとするためであり、また、しみも、しわも、そのたぐいのものが、いっさいなく、清くて傷のない栄光の姿の教会をご自分に迎えるためである」
主にある兄弟姉妹、私達一人一人はイエス・キリストの十字架の血により、救われました。イエス様はそのご愛ゆえに私達を贖ってくださいました。キリスト教徒である私達はそのことを知っているはずです。
それでは、私達が集っているこのサンディエゴ日本人教会がイエス・キリストがその命を捧げられた、その血により買い取られたものであるということをご存知でしたか。
私達が何かの団体に所属する時、その先達者がどんな思いで、その団体に献身して、その形成に心を注ぎ、それを大切にしたかということを知ります。
そして、そのことを知れば知るほど、私達はその団体に対する敬意と、自分の関わりを見出し、同じようにその団体へコミットします。
この教会は私達の主、イエスの血によって贖いとられた教会なのだと聖書は言います。
この歴然とした事実が今、私達の前にあるのです。パウロはこの事実を前に、その生涯をキリストの教会に注いだのです。
このことは教会に対する、彼の生涯を貫くモーティベーションとなりました。主にある皆さん、この事実を前に私達はどのような思いで、この教会にこれから向き合っていくのでしょうか。
箴言にこんな言葉があります。
「牛がいなければ飼葉桶はきれいだ。しかし牛の力によって収穫は多くなる」（箴言１４章４節 新改訳聖書）
牛が牛舎にいなければその飼葉桶が汚れることはありません。悪臭もなく、蠅もおらず、排泄物を水で流す必要もありません。そうです、牛さえいなければ手間はかかりませんし、牛舎も飼葉桶もきれいです。
牛がいない牛舎なら私達はそこで寝泊まりをすることができます。しかし、そこから私達は何も得ることはありません。そこに牛がいる限り、その場所は日々、汚れます。
そこに人がいる限り、教会にはすべきことがあります。私達の主は医者であり、その医者は病人を招き、罪人を招くと言われるのですから、そこに連なる、先に神のあわれみにより罪を赦された私達には覚悟しなければならないことがありますでしょう。
私達はきれいに片づいた、埃のない家を求めるかもしれません。そこに人が誰も住んでいないなら、そのきれいな家を保つことは可能です。
しかし、私達の内なる声は言います。「私はそのような場所を求めていない」”私達はその家が散らかろうと、汚れようと、そこに私達が愛する、私達を愛してくれる者達がいることを求めます。
私達は覚悟しなければなりません。牛のいる牛舎の飼葉桶が汚れるように、人がおる所は常に汚れるということを。その覚悟は環境が散らかる、汚れるということだけではなく、私達の間に問題が生じる、時に私達の心が騒然となるという覚悟です。
そして、このことを受け止めてくださったお方がイエス・キリストです。イエス様はその汚い飼い葉桶に自ら進んで、寝かされたのです。
イエス・キリストが飼い葉桶に寝かされたということは、この世界の汚れのただ中に神の子、イエス様が生きることを覚悟されたということです。その時、イエス様が飼い葉桶に寝かされることにより、神はその手を文字通り汚すことをよしとされたのです。
なぜなら、自らの手を汚さなければ牛舎の掃除はできないように、自ら汚れの中に身を置かなければ、そこに生きる者を救うことはできないからです。そこに生きる者とは誰ですか。私であり、あなたです。
イエス様が寝かされた飼葉はその時、悪臭で満ちていたでしょう。その姿は罪の悪臭がする私達の世界のただ中に生きる神の子の姿をあらわしていました。
そして、イエス様のその覚悟はカルバリの丘で頂点に達しました。そうです、神の手は汚れたばかりではなく、その手には釘が打たれ、キリストの骨は砕かれたのです。
この世界の秩序を破壊する人の罪のために、キリストはその愛により、私達のために十字架におかかりになりました。
私は中高生の時に毎年、夏にバイブルキャンプに行きました。そこでよく歌われた歌に「主の手足になろう」という歌があります。最近、この懐かしい歌をユーチューブで見つけ、久しぶりに聴いたのです。
惜しみなく与えた主に 惜しみなく捧げよう
主の手は傷ついている みんなで主の手になろう
惜しみなく与えた主に 惜しみなく捧げよう
主の足は痛んでいる みんなで主の足になろう
イエス様が復活され、弟子達の前に姿をあらわした時、そこに弟子の一人、トマスはいませんでした（ヨハネ２０章２４節―２９節）。ですから彼は、その復活を疑い、こう言ったのです。
『わたしは、その手に釘あとを見、わたしの指をその釘あとにさし入れ、また、わたしの手をそのわきにさし入れてみなければ、決して信じない』（ヨハネ２０章２５節）。
この後、すぐにイエス様はそのトマスにあらわれ、ご自身の手にある釘後と、脇腹に槍で突き刺された傷跡を見せました。言うまでもなく、その両足の甲にも釘後が残っていたことでしょう。そう、イエス様の手足には傷跡が残されていたというのです。
私達の家族や友人が私達を救うために、手の平に大きな傷を負い、何針も縫ったとします。その人に荷物をもたせますか。その人に水仕事をさせますか。足の甲の骨が砕けて車いすに乗っている人にトイレの掃除をさせますか。
イエスの手足の傷跡、それは私達のため。
その主が『わたしはこの岩の上にわたしの教会を建てよう』（マタイ１６章１８節）と言われたのです。
その教会についてパウロはさらに深い真理に導かれ、『あなたがたはキリストのからだであり、ひとりびとりはその肢体である』（コリント第一の手紙１２章２７節）とはっきりと言いました。
キリストを頭とするキリストの体なる教会で、私達はその体に属している器官なのです。
その器官である私達がすべきことは何でしょうか。惜しみなく私達に与え尽くした主に 惜しみなく自らを捧げるという事ではありませんか。
イエス・キリストはご自身のサンディエゴ日本人教会を私達に託しておられるのです。
三週間前に皆さんのお手元に教会の奉仕リストを配りました。
それがいかなる場所でありましても人の集まる場所にはなすべきことがあります。そうです、ここは牛舎のような場所であり、また病院の待合室のような場所なのです。食事をするにはその準備が必要であり、また後片づけが必要となるように、人が集まれば全てが自動的に整い、礼拝が始まるのではなくて、そのためには礼拝に仕える人が必要となります。
礼拝の玄関を開ける人から、グリーターや司会者、賛美奉仕者、メッセンジャー、教会の回りのごみを拾ってくださる方・・・。一つのことが成されるためにはその背後に多くの献身的なはたらきがあるのです。そう考えるのなら、私達は皆、「チャーチビルダー」です。この一つ一つの働きはキリストの教会を建て上げることに直結するものだからです。
私達はこのはたらきを義務としてするのではありません。あの人に申し訳ないからするというものでもありません。.もし、この義務感が私達の動機となっているのなら、一度、そのはたらきを中断することをお勧めします。そこから距離を置いて、そもそも何のために、自分はこのはたらきをするのだろうかと祈り求める必要があるからです。
私達はなぜこのはたらきをするのでしょうか。言うまでもありません。この教会は主が命を捨ててまでも私達を愛されたイエス・キリストの教会であるゆえに、私達もこの教会を愛し、それに仕えるのです。私達の奉仕は牧師のためでもなく、自己満足のためでもなく、イエス・キリストのためになされるべきものなのです。
惜しみなく与えた主に、惜しみなく捧げましょう。これ以外に私達のモーティーベーションはないのです。

あなたが教会の周りの掃除をするということは、ここに集う方達の心が騒ぐことなく、安んじて主の宮に来ることができる、その道を備えていることです。
あなたがセキュリティーとして教会の周りを巡る時、私達は主の宮の門守なのだということをご存知ですか。あなたがグリーターとして教会玄関に立つ時、あなたはその日に主の宮にやって来る人に、一番最初に笑顔で声をかける神の宮のグリーターとして神に仕えているのを知っていますか。あなたがオンラインでこの礼拝を世界に発信する時、世界のどこかで神なく、希望なく生きている人が生まれて初めて、人生の中に光を見出すかもしれないのです。あなたがピアノを弾く時、会衆の賛美を導く時、私達は万軍の主にその賛美をお捧げしているのです。その賛美により、うつむいて肩を落としていた人が主を見上げるのです。
私達が子供達のミニストリーに関わる時、子供をこよなく愛された主から託された子達の前に私達は立っているのです。ご存知ですか、あなたは一人の人間の永遠の命に関係しているということを。
もしあなたが誰かの心の痛みに耳を傾けるのなら、その人を励ます言葉を語るのなら、あなたはイエス・キリストがあのサマリアの女にしたことと同じことをしているのです。
主の前に「より優れた仕事」などはありません。主は言われたではありませんか。『わたしの弟子であるという名のゆえに、この小さい者のひとりに冷たい水一杯でも飲ませてくれる者は、よく言っておくが、決してその報いからもれることはない』。マタイ１０章４２節。
主の前には全てのはたらきは尊いのです。そして、その働きにはこんな報いがあるのです。
『だから、愛する兄弟たちよ。堅く立って動かされず、いつも全力を注いで主のわざに励みなさい。主にあっては、あなたがたの労苦がむだになることはないと、あなたがたは知っているからである』 （コリント第一の手紙１５章５８節）。
私達は労苦がむだにならない仕事をしたいと心から願います。しかし、この世の仕事には労苦がむだになるような仕事があります。そのことを知り、途方にくれることがあります。しかし、主にあって、主のわざに励む時、それがむだになることはありません。
人生は泣いても笑っても一度限りです。このことを理解して、今を生きていますか？そして、誰もその最後の日がいつ来るのか知らないのです。
主にある皆さん、そうであるのなら、今日、主のはたらきに従事し、主のために生きる生涯を送りたいと思いませんか。
このサンディエゴ日本人教会に集う全ての物達が、この教会は「神が御子の血であがない取られた神の教会」であること、そして、この教会は「キリストが愛しておられる教会であり、そのためにご自身を捧げられた」、主イエスの教会であるということ、このことにおいて、一人としてもれることなく、同じページに立ち続けることを心より祈り、願います。
そして、私達が「あなたたちは何をしているのですか」と問われる時、「よくぞ聞いてくださった。私達はここに主の宮を建てているのだ。こんな素晴らしブロジェクトに関わることができて私達は本当に幸せ者だよ」と言うことができたら、私達はなんと幸いな者達なのでしょう！
そのような働きを皆さんと共にさせていただける、こんなに大きな喜びが他にあるでしょうか！お祈りしましょう。
A Church Pleasing to God (12): The Motivation to Serve the Church

We do not expect police officers to mow our lawns. We expect police officers to keep our society safe. We do not expect Manny Machado to direct cars in the parking lot at Petco Park. We expect him to show us his professionalism on the field.
What about the church? What do we expect of the church? I think this will become clearer when we consider, “The church would not be a church without this”.
We used to enjoy curry luncheons once a month. Without curry luncheons, would we not be a church? No, this is a Christian church, even without the curry luncheons.If we did not have events such as the Labor Day Camp, would we not be a church? No, this is a Christian church, even without such events.This is not to say that curry luncheons and Labor Day Camps are not necessary. They have important significance as well. However, they do not make the church a church.
But if the Bible is not spoken, worship is not offered, and prayer is not done in our church, if there is not a single worshiper here, we cannot call it a church. A church is not a building, but a group of people who gather there and do these things with the faith that “Jesus is Lord”. Whether it is a church of 100,000 people or a church of 3 people, if these things are being done, regardless of the number of people, it is a church.
Our church offers everyone the opportunity, including in our worship services, to open the Word of God, and to pray, multiple times each week. These meetings are open to everyone.
And we encourage individual times of devotion, so that each person can be in the Bible alone each day. Spiritual food is not something that can be eaten in bulk. The reason for this is so that we may partake of spiritual food daily. We continue to do these things steadily each week. That is our life of faith. There is no “one day all of a sudden” or “shortcuts” to growing in faith.
By nature, having faith is a very personal matter. Because it is a relationship that is established between God and oneself.However, having been made such people of faith, God does not ask us to maintain and nourish that faith alone.
In the Old Testament, God chose the Israelites, and they always continued their journey of faith together as “the people of Israel”. The Lord wants us to remain in the “Church” where those who are called “Christians” gather. This is not a “pastor’s recommendation” but “what the Bible says”.
Jesus once said to His disciple Peter, when the church did not yet exist on earth. We take these words very seriously, and have inscribed them on the front area of our church. Please look at it on your way home.
“and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it” (Matthew 16:18).
Yes, Jesus clearly stated, along with his strong will, that He would build “My church”. Brothers and sisters in the Lord, are you aware that we are gathered this morning in the Church of Jesus Christ? Yes, this San Diego Japanese Christian Church is a church that the Lord Jesus says is “My church”.
Elementary and middle schools are places where children of a defined age gather. Kenjinkai is a gathering place for people from that prefecture (ken). But that is not the case with the church. The people who gather in churches are diverse.
It is a place where Americans, Japanese, Koreans, Mexicans, and people of all races, from infants to the elderly, gather. In the church, there are some former Buddhists, and there are also others who have been away from the Christian faith and have returned to the church. Everyone lives here for different reasons, and each of us faces and deals with different things on a daily basis.
Jesus Christ once said.
“It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” (Mark 2:17)
These words do not mean that there are “sick” and “healthy” people in this world, but that we are all sick and are sinners before God. There are two kinds of people in this world. “Those who are aware” of this, and “those who are not aware”. And Jesus Christ says He came into this world, for those who are sick and are sinners.
In that sense, our church is like a hospital with the Lord as its physician, and we are those who come to gather with that physician. He knows the condition of our hearts, and He heals and restores them. Together we observe this, pray, and encourage one another.
And if we stay connected to Christ, we can keep our souls healthy. Apart from Him we can do nothing. If any of you are now thinking of turning away from the faith, try to remember this.
“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5)
You may be trying to live the rest of your life without faith.You may be trying to plan your life without the God who gave life to you, and is sustaining that life this morning.
But the Lord made it clear. Apart from Me you can do nothing. Remain in Me. You will bear much fruit. No matter what, our various efforts and plans in life begin with connecting to God first . . . .
The most striking difference between before and after Jesus Christ’s return to heaven, is that the Church was born in this world after Jesus returned to heaven. And one of the people involved in the birth and growth of the church from the very beginning was a man named Paul.
He is a man who pioneered this “new thing” in various places, that had not previously existed on this earth, and who devoted his life to seeing it built up. As a pioneer in starting and building something that had not existed before, Paul’s constant thought was, “What is the church?”
Without this clarification, he would not have the motivation to cultivate and form a church. And Paul was led to one truth about the Church.
Here are some guidelines for how we gather and relate to the church. Paul says this about the Church. Acts 20:28.
Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood. (Acts 20:28).
Ephesians 5:24-27.
24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. (Ephesians 5:24-27).
Brothers and sisters in the Lord, each of us has been saved by the blood of Jesus Christ on the cross. Jesus redeemed us because of His love. As Christians, we should know that.
Then, did you know that this San Diego Japanese Christian Church, where we are gathered, was bought with the blood of Jesus Christ, who gave His life for us?
When we belong to an organization, we know what our predecessors had in mind when they dedicated themselves to it, poured their hearts into its formation, and cherished it.
And the more we learn about it, the more we find respect for the organization and our own involvement, and the more we commit to it in the same way.
The Bible says that this church has been bought with the blood of our Lord Jesus. This clear fact is now before us. Paul poured his life into Christ’s church in the face of this fact.
This became his life-long motivation for the Church. People in the Lord, what are our thoughts in the face of this fact, and how will we face this church in the future?
Proverbs has this to say.
Where no oxen are, the manger is clean, but much revenue comes by the strength of the ox (NASB 1995, Proverbs 14:4)
If the cows are not in the barn, their manger will not get dirty. There will be no stench, no flies, and no need to flush excrement with water.
Yes, as long as there are no cows, there is no hassle, and the barn and manger will be clean.
If the barn is empty of cows, we can sleep there. However, we gain nothing from it. As long as there are cows there, the place will be dirty day by day.
As long as there are people there, the church has a job to do. Since our Lord is a physician, and it is said that He invites the sick and invites sinners, we who are connected to Him and who have been forgiven of our sins by God’s mercy beforehand, must be prepared.
We may want a clean, tidy, dust-free house. If no one lives there, it is possible to keep that clean house.But our inner voice says. “I do not seek such a place.” There, we seek to have those we love, and those who love us, no matter how messy or dirty that house may be.
We must be prepared. We must be prepared for the fact that where there are people, it will always be dirty, just as the manger in the barn with the cows gets dirty.
That readiness is not only a readiness to have our surroundings messy and dirty, but also a readiness to have problems arise among us, and at times, to have our hearts in turmoil.
And the One who has accepted this is Jesus Christ.イJesus volunteered to be laid in that filthy manger. The fact that Jesus Christ was laid in a manger means that the Son of God, Jesus, was prepared to live in the midst of the filth of this world. At that time, God made it good for Jesus to literally get his hands dirty by laying him in a manger.
Because just as you cannot clean a barn without getting your hands dirty, you cannot save those who live there without putting yourself in the midst of that filth. The manger, in which Jesus lay at that time, would have been filled with a foul stench. The image was that of the Son of God living in the midst of our world, which reeks of sin. And Jesus’ resolve culminated on the hill of Calvary. Yes, not only were God’s hands dirtied, but nails were driven into His hands, and Christ’s bones were crushed. For the sins of those who destroy the order of this world, Christ, by His love, was crucified for us.
I went to Bible camp every summer when I was in middle school and high school. One song that was often sung there was “Let us be the Lord’s hands and feet”.
I recently found this nostalgic song on YouTube, which I hadn’t heard in a while.
Let us give generously to the Lord who gave so generously.
The Lord’s hands are wounded, let’s all be His hands.

The Lord’s feet are aching, let’s all be His feet.
When Jesus was resurrected and appeared to the disciples, one of His disciples, Thomas, was not there (John 20:24-29).
So, he doubted the resurrection and said,
“Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” (John 20:25)
Immediately after this, Jesus appeared to Thomas and showed him the nail marks in His own hands and the scar on his side where he had been pierced by a spear.
Needless to say, there would have been nail marks on the backs of both of His feet. Yes, it is said that Jesus’ hands and feet were left with scars.
Suppose our family member or friend in order to save us, got a big wound on the palm of his or her hand, as well as many stitches. Would you have that person carry your luggage? Would you have that person wash things? Would you have someone in a wheelchair with a shattered bone in the back of his or her foot clean the toilet? The scars on Jesus’ hands and feet, that was for us.
That Lord has said, “and on this rock I will build my church” (Matthew 16:18).
Paul was led to a deeper truth about that church and wrote clearly, “Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it” (1 Corinthians 12:27).
The Church is the body of Christ, with Christ as its head, and we are parts belonging to that body. What should we as its parts do? Isn’t that what it means to give ourselves unreservedly to the Lord who has given so generously to us?
Jesus Christ has entrusted His San Diego Japanese Christian Church to us. Three weeks ago, I distributed to you a church ministry list.
There is always something to be done in any place where people gather, no matter where that place may be. Yes, this place is like a barn or a hospital waiting room. Just as eating a meal requires its preparation, and also cleaning up afterwards, when people gather, everything is not automatically in order and worship begins, but people are needed to serve in worship for that to happen.
From the person who opens the front door for worship, to the greeters, ushers, praise team members, the messenger, and those who pick up trash around the church . . . There is a lot of dedicated work behind the accomplishment of a single thing.
If you think of it that way, we are all “church builders”. This is because each of these works is directly related to building up Christ’s Church.We do not do this work out of obligation. We do not do it because we feel sorry for someone. If this sense of obligation is motivating you, then I advise you to stop that work once and for all. It is necessary to distance oneself from this and ask prayerfully, for what purpose am I doing this work in the first place?
Why do we do this work? It goes without saying. We love and serve this church, because it is the church of Jesus Christ that out of His love for us that the Lord laid down His life for. Our service should not be for the pastor or for self-gratification, but for Jesus Christ.
Let us give generously to the Lord who gave so generously. There is no other motivation for us than this.
A person visited a construction site. Stone masons were working there. The man asked one of the masons. “What are you doing?” The stonecutter replied, “You can tell can’t you. I’m cutting stones. I can’t stand the heat.” He asked another the same question. “What are you doing?” The mason replied, “Oh, you’re asking about us? We are building a wall. It’s truly a big hassle.” He asked the same question to a third person. “What are you doing?” The mason replied, “Thank you for asking. I am building a cathedral. I am very blessed to be involved in such a wonderful project.”
The three masons were doing the exact same job, but they saw different meanings in their work. Different perspectives on work lead to different approaches. There is a world of difference between “complaints and whining” and “gratitude and joy”. All things, all our life’s initiatives depend on this.
When you clean up around the church, you are preparing the way for those who gather here to come to the temple of the Lord at ease, without any disturbance in their hearts.
Did you know that when you go around the church doing security, you are being the gatekeepers of the Lord’s temple?
When you stand at the church entrance as a greeter, do you know that you are serving God as a greeter in the temple of God, the first to smile and say hello to those who come to the temple of the Lord that day?
When you share this worship service online with the world, someone somewhere in the world who is living without God and without hope may see light in their life for the first time.
When you play the piano and lead the congregation in praise, we are offering that praise to the Lord of hosts. By that praise, a person who had been slumped and hunched over looks up to the Lord.
When we are involved in children’s ministry, we are standing before children entrusted to us by the Lord who loves them so much. Are you aware that you are involved in the eternal life of one person.
If you listen to someone’s heartache, if you speak words of encouragement to that person, you are doing the same thing that Jesus Christ did to that Samaritan woman.
There is no such thing as a “superior work” before the Lord. Hasn’t the Lord said, “And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.” (Matthew 10:42)
All work is precious before the Lord. And there is such a reward for that work.
Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58).
We sincerely hope that our work will not be a waste of time and effort.しHowever, there is work in this world that makes our labors futile. We are sometimes at a loss when we realize this. But in the Lord, it will not be in vain when we are working hard at His work.
Whether we laugh or cry, we live life only once. Are you living your life right now with this understanding? And no one knows when their last day will come.
People in the Lord, if that is so, don’t you want to engage in His work today and live a life of living for Him?
All who gather at the San Diego Japanese Christian Church, this church is “the church of God bought with the blood of His Son,” and this is the church of the Lord Jesus, “the church that Christ loves and for which He gave Himself”.
I sincerely pray and hope that none of us will be left out in this, and that we will continue to stand on the same page. And when we are asked, “What are you doing?”「What a blessed people we are if we can say, “Thank you for asking! We are building the Lord’s temple. We are truly blessed to be involved in such a wonderful project!”
What greater joy is there than this, to be able to do such work together with all of you! Let us pray.

４）パウロはそれまで存在しなかった教会を開拓し、その教会を成長させるためにしっかりとした教会に対する理解を必要としていました。使徒行伝２０章２８節、エペソ５章２４節ー２７節を読みましょう。このことはあなたの教会に仕える動機にどんな変化をもたらしますか。
５）「牛がいなければ飼葉おけはきれいだ。しかし牛の力によって収穫は多くなる」（箴言１４章４節 新改訳聖書）という言葉は私達の教会にどんなメッセージを語りかけていますか。
６）『あなたがたはキリストのからだであり、ひとりびとりはその肢体である』（コリント第一の手紙１２章２７節）と言われているとおり、私達一人一人はキリストの体なる教会に属する者であるということを知る時に、あなたが教会に対して与えられている使命は何でしょうか。
