ほどほどに義理を果たさなければならないという程度の神ならば、その言葉に従うことはありませんでしょう。それよりも自分で好きなように生きていって、苦しい時にだけ「頼みますよ」と言っていたほうが気楽でありましょう。気楽であるということは、私達が思う以上に私達がとても大切にしていることなのです・・・。

神のあわれみによる勧め
ローマ１２章１節－２節

それが日本であっても、アメリカであっても、どこの国であっても多くの人たちは「教育」に関心を寄せます。特に若者達がどんな教育を受けるかということは、その国の将来に関わってきます。教育はすぐに芽が出るものではありませんが、確かに私達が培ったものが私達の社会や国の形成にも大きな影響を与えます。
この「教育」ということについて１９８７年、ハーバード大学において、大学レベルの教育に携わる者達の会議が持たれました。その時にコネール大学のフランク・ローズ学長が教育改革案を提案しました。彼は聴衆に向かいこう言いました。「「価値観」や学生達の「健全な道徳」という面に大学はもっと注意を払う時がきている」
すると、ただちに聴衆はざわつき始め、批判がわき起こったといいます。そんな中、一人の学生が立ち上がって言いました「あなたは誰の価値観を教えるというのですか。誰がそれを教えるのですか」。聴衆は彼の発言に対して盛んな拍手を送りました。この質問に対してローズ学長は何も答えることなく席に戻りました。
なぜ、聴衆はざわついたのでしょうか。なぜなら、私達にとって「価値観」というものは「各自のもの」であり、その価値観に基づいて、「このことはしなければならない、このことはしてはならない」というような道徳も一人一人が決めるべきものと彼らは考えたからです。ですから、彼らは価値観とか道徳について人からとやかく言われたくなかったのです。自分の好きなように生きていたいのです。なぜなら、それこそが私達が今日「自由」と呼んでいることなのですから。
この会議が持たれたのが１９８７年ですから、今から３１年前のことです。以来、この価値観と道徳に関する見方は変わらないばかりか、さらにこの考え方は多くの人たちに支持され、世界に広がっています。
そして、これは実は新しいものではなく古の時代から既に人の心にあったものなのです。旧約聖書の士師記に記されているとおりです。「めいめいが自分の目に正しいと見えることを行っていた」（士師２１章２５節）。このような生き方がどんな世界を作り出すかということは既にこの士師記に記されています。そうです、士師記の時代は聖書の中でも特に混乱に満ちた時代でした。このようなことを心にとめ、今日もローマ書１２章のあのご言葉を見ていきましょう。
「兄弟たちよ。そういうわけで、神のあわれみによってあなたがたに勧める。あなたがたのからだを、神に喜ばれる、生きた、聖なる供え物として捧げなさい。それが、あなたがたのなすべき霊的な礼拝である。あなたがたは、この世と妥協してはならない。むしろ、心を新たにすることによって、造りかえられ、何が神の御旨であるか、何が善であって、神に喜ばれ、かつ全きことであるかを、わきまえ知るべきである」（ローマ書１２章１節－２節）
皆さん、私達はローズ学長の勧めの言葉と、ここでパウロが書いている勧めの言葉を見ています。これらの二つの言葉には違いがあることに気がつきましたか。
ローズ学長は自分の考えを勧めました。教育者としてその考えは自分の経験に基づいたものだったのでしょうから、いい加減なものではなかったと思います。しかし、ローズ学長が「こうでなくてはならないでしょう」と自分の考えを勧めたら、聴衆は「ＮＯ」と答えたのです。「ほっとけ、誰が俺達に道徳と価値観を教えることができるのか」と。そしてローズ学長はこの反論に答えることができませんでした。なぜでしょうか。考えてみました。なぜなら「彼も聴衆と同じ人間だからです」。「俺達と同じ人間が俺達に価値観を押しつけるのか。善悪を教えるのか」と言われれば、応える言葉はないのです。
それに対してパウロは「神のあわれみによって」勧めました。これがローズ学長の勧めとパウロの勧めとの違いです。この違いには天と地の差があります。彼の勧めは「自分の考え」ではなく「神のあわれみ」によってなされたものだからです。
もちろん私達はたとえそれが「神にあって」なされた勧めであっても、その勧めを無視することができますし、それに反論したり、拒絶することができることを私達は知っています。

しかし、神の存在を疑いなく信じている者にとりましては、神のあわれみにより我々に強く勧められている言葉は聞き捨てることができないものとなります。その言葉は時代が変わっても決して変わるものではなく、それに従うことには大きな意味があるからです。そして、その勧めの言葉にこそ人として生きる最善の生き方があると私達は信じるからです。
私達には自分の側で都合よく作り出したものではない、すなわちあちらから（天から）与えられている変わることのない価値観が必要です。「何でもあり」という世の中で、私達が本当に必要なものはこのような確固たるものなのです。
今日、私達はよく「モーテイベイション」という言葉を聞きます。日本語で言うところの「動機」といいましょうか、人を動かす源の力となるものです。よくスポーツ選手が現役を引退する時に使います。「モーティベーションがなくなってしまいましたから引退します」。
この度のオリンピックのような大きな大会が終わりますと、このようなことで思い悩む選手は多いのではないかと思います。四年間、ひたすらオリンピックだけを目指してがんばってきたけど、それも終わってしまった。さぁ、これからどうするのか。もう一度、四年後のオリンピックを目指すのか、その時に自分を奮い立たせるものがなければ、これからの四年間、苦しい練習に向きあっうていくことは難しくなります。モーティベーションがないからです。
高校生が一生懸命、勉強することの一つの動機は自分が望んでいる大学に行くということです。あと１０キロ痩せようと思っている方は、そうすればあの服を着ることができるという動機があるのです。野球選手から受験生、ダイエットを試みるものまで、私達は動機に突き動かされています。
皆さん、今日の箇所をもう一度、読んでみましょう。。すなわちパウロは私達にこのような勧めをしているのです。「兄弟たちよ。そういうわけで、神のあわれみによってあなたがたに勧める。あなたがたのからだを、神に喜ばれる、生きた、聖なる供え物としてささげなさい。それが、あなたがたのなすべき霊的な礼拝である。あなたがたは、この世と妥協してはならない。むしろ、心を新たにすることによって、造りかえられ、何が神の御旨であるか、何が善であって、神に喜ばれ、かつ全きことであるかを、わきまえ知るべきである」。
これらの勧めを義務として受け入れるのであるのなら、私達は長続きをしませんでしょう。しかし、この言葉には私達を動機づけるものがあります。それが「神の私達に対するあわれみ」なのです。
実際に私達がクリスチャンとして生きる時に、神の教えに従うことを突き動かしているものは何でしょうか。クリスチャンであるから神は諸々の災いから守ってくれるであろうと思われるからでしょうか。自分の夢の実現や目標達成のために神は力をくれるからでしょうか。
これらを動機にするならば、その人は必ず行き詰まる時がきます。クリスチャンであっても思いがけないことは当然、起こるからです。全ての目標が達成されるとは限りませんし、かたちだけの信仰であるならそこには常に義務感が伴うものです。
そうではなくてパウロがまず言ったことは「神のあわれみ」なのです。「神のあわれみ」とは別の言い方をすれば「神の恵み」ということです。聖書の中に記されている人々がなぜ神に喜んで仕えていったのか。それは神の恵みを彼らが知ったからです。それが彼らの動機となったのです。信仰とは「ねばならない」ものではありません。「せずにはいられないもの」なのであります。
あのパウロというキリストの使徒はⅠテモテ１章１３節―１６節でこういっています。
「わたしは以前には、神をそしる者、迫害する者、不遜な者であった。しかし私は、これらの事を、信仰がなかった時、無知なためにしたのだから、あわれみをこうむったのである。その上、私達の主の恵みが、キリスト・イエスにある信仰と愛とに伴い、ますます増し加わってきた。キリスト・イエスは罪人を救うためにこの世に来てくださった」という言葉は、確実でそのまま受け入れるに足るものである。わたしは、その罪人の頭なのである。しかし、私があわれみをこうむったのは、キリスト・イエスが、まず私に対して限りない寛容を示し、そして、わたしが今後、彼を信じて永遠の命を受ける者の模範となるためである」（Ⅰテモテ１章１３節―１６節）。
彼はかつてはキリスト教徒を捕えては殺害しているような人間だったのです。ですから、彼に弁解の余地はないのです。しかし、神は限りないあわれみを自分にかけて下さった。まさしくキリストは罪人を救うためにこの世界に来てくださったのだ。そして、その罪人の中でも自分は頭なのだ。パウロはこの自分にかけられたあわれみをよく知っていました。
彼は「限りない寛容」を神が自分に示して下さったとも言っています。そうだろうな、キリスト教徒を迫害していた男なのだから、まさしく限りない寛容が彼には示されていたのだなと私達は他人事で考えます。
しかし、ひとたび、自分の心に手を置いて思いめぐらせば、パウロだけではない、自分にも限りない神の寛容が示されていることが分かる。いったいどれだけの年月、私達は神に背を向けて生きてきているのか。都合のいい時、必要な時だけ
神を持ち出してきて、用が済めば端っこに置きっぱなしにしているような日々を送っているのが私達です。同じことを伴侶にすれば、そっぽを向かれるでしょう。
でも、神はそんな私達を見捨てずに、今日も私達を生かし、日毎の糧を与え、そして、神と共に歩む人生、そんな機会を今も私達に与えてくださっているお方なのですから、私達もパウロと何ら変わらない限りない神の寛容の中に今、私達はいるのです。
そして、その神の自分に対する寛容とあわれみを知れば知るほど、心の中からその神のために生きようという思いがパウロの心の中にわいてきたのです。その私と全く同じあわれみを、あなた方も受けている。であるから、あなたの体を生きた供え物として神に捧げなさい。それは、義務ではなく、神の恵みに対する当然の応答（リスポンス）であるとパウロは言うのです。
以前、「Amazing Grace」という映画を観ました。その映画の中ではウィリアム・ウィルバーフォースという若き法律家が奴隷船貿易の反対を掲げて立ち上がります。そして、同時代に生きたAmazing Graceの作者ジョン・ニュートンも映画の中で彼にアドバイスを与えているのです。
ニュートンは映画の中で、高齢ゆえに目が見えなくなりながらも、衰えて記憶が定かでなくなる前に、自分のしてきたことがどんなことであったかを証言するために、自分の経験を語り、それを書き取らせている場面がありました。彼が経験したこととは何だったのでしょうか。ニュートンについて書かれている資料を見ます時にこんな記述があります。
英国人ジョーン・ニュートンは若くして海の男となり、アフリカに渡る。後に彼が自叙伝に書いているように、その理由は「思う存分、罪を犯す」ためであった。その道は下り坂、彼は落ちに落ちていった。そして、アフリカの地で彼がしたことは、アフリカから新世界へと奴隷を運ぶ奴隷船の船長。「思う存分、罪を犯す」という心意気で生きていた彼は当然、「奴隷を運ぶ」以外に、諸々のことをしてきたことは容易に想像できます。
その彼の乗っていた船が北大西洋で大嵐に会い、沈没しそうになりました。船体は壊れ、海水が流入し、嵐はおさまらず来る日も来る日も彼らは海水をくみ出しました。このままいけば、船は沈み、自分も沈み、溺れ死ぬことは確実でした。
ところが不思議なことにニュートンが海水をくみ出している時に、その脳裏には「彼が子供の頃、母親から教えられた聖書の言葉がいくつか思い出されました。船は嵐を乗り、彼はその後、牧師になるために学び、ついには偉大な説教者となりました。
やがて高齢になったニュートンは、思考力も衰え、説教もやめなければならなくなりました。友人達が訪れると、彼はよくこう言いいました「すっかり年をとってしまった。思考力もなくなってきた。でも二つのことはよく覚えている。私が大変な罪人であったこと。そして、イエスが偉大な救い主であられるということです」。

私のようなろくでなしが救われた。かつて私は失われた者であったが、今は神によって見いだされている！私の目はかつて閉ざされていたが、今は見ることができる。
イエス・キリストは言われました「丈夫な人に医者はいらない。私が来たのは、義人を招くためではなく、罪人を招くためである」（マタイ９章）
イエスは「丈夫な人に医者はいらない」と言われましたが、実際に神の目がこの世界に生きる人を余すところ眺めるならば「丈夫な人」はいないと聖書は語っています。イエスは「義人を招くためではなく」と言われましたが、実際に神の目がこの世界に生きる人を余すところ眺めるなら「義人」はいないと聖書は語っています。
かつてパウロは「キリスト教徒を撲滅する」という強い動機と共に殺害の息をはずませていたのです。ニュートンがアフリカに渡った動機は「思う存分罪を犯す」というものでありました。しかし、彼らはその虚しい動機から、人生をかけて足る動機を神の限りない寛容とあわれみゆえに手に入れたのです。
彼らはその生涯に全く同じことに気がついたのです。その生きた時代は１６００年ほどの隔たりがあったのですが、彼らは「自分は神を必要とする病人であり、罪人である」ということに気がついたのです。そして、その「ろくでなし」である自分をイエスが無条件で赦し、受け入れてくれたことを知ったのです。
その時から彼らの人生の動機が変わりました。パウロはイエスを伝えるために異教の地に出て行き、奴隷船船長ニュートンは神の言葉を伝える説教者となりました。確かに主イエスの恵みは彼らを最後の最後まで突き動かしたのです。神の恵みにはそれだけの力があるからです。この神の恵みが私達に注がれているということを知る時に、私達もこの神の恵みに応答する者と変えられるのです。
義務で何かをしている時というのは、時間が経つが遅いものです。嫌な仕事をしている時には終業時間がくるのが何と遅い事か。しかし、やりがいがあることなら、あっという間に終業時間がやってくる。苦労も苦労と感じない。もっと働いていたいのにと、後ろ髪をひかれながら帰宅することもあるかもしれない。
どうせ働くのなら、そんな仕事に就きたい。しかし、仕事は人生の一部にすぎませんが、その仕事も含めた人生そのものも、どうせ生きるのなら、いくつもの苦労をしながらも、喜びと感謝とやりがいに突き動かされて生きたいと思いませんか。そう、そのために必要なことは万民に与えられている神の無尽蔵の恵みに気がつき、その恵みと共に生きることです。この動機はオリンピック選手のように四年毎に更新しなければならないものではなく、私達が天に帰るその時まで私達を突き動かすものなのです。
最後に神の恵みに支配され、それに突き動かされた生涯を全うしたパウロが心から溢れてくる思いを綴った言葉を私達の心になぞらえて、このメッセージを終わりましょう。エペソ２章１節－１０節を読んで終わりましょう。
１さてあなたがたは、先には自分の罪過と罪とによって死んでいた者であって、２かつてはそれらの中で、この世のならわしに従い、空中の権をもつ君、すなわち、不従順の子らの中に今も働いている霊に従って、歩いていたのである。３また、わたしたちもみな、かつては彼らの中にいて、肉の欲に従って日を過ごし、肉とその思いとの欲するままを行い、ほかの人々と同じく、生れながらの怒りの子であった。４しかるに、あわれみに富む神は、わたしたちを愛して下さったその大きな愛をもって、５罪過によって死んでいたわたしたちを、キリストと共に生かし――あなたがたの救われたのは、恵みによるのである―― ６キリスト・イエスにあって、共によみがえらせ、共に天上で座につかせて下さったのである。７それは、キリスト・イエスにあってわたしたちに賜わった慈愛による神の恵みの絶大な富を、きたるべき世々に示すためであった。８あなたがたの救われたのは、実に、恵みにより、信仰によるのである。それは、あなたがた自身から出たものではなく、神の賜物である。９決して行いによるのではない。それは、だれも誇ることがないためなのである。１０わたしたちは神の作品であって、良い行いをするように、キリスト・イエスにあって造られたのである。神は、わたしたちが、良い行いをして日を過ごすようにと、あらかじめ備えて下さったのである。
パウロが特別なのではありません。私達は神の作品であり、その作品を通して、神の栄光をあらわすことができるような人生に私達は招かれています。この言葉は「こうあらねばならない」と私達に語りかけるものではなくて、「こうありたい」と私達を突き動かす言葉なのです。そうです、主イエス・キリストが私達になしてくださった理由は、私達がこの思いにいたるためであったのです。お祈りしましょう。
God Urges Us by His Mercy

Including Japan and the United States, many people all over the world are interested in “education”. Especially, in the kind of education that the younger generation receives because it greatly impacts the country’s future. Although education does not provide immediate benefits to the country, surely we have learned that it has a large long-term influence in forming our country and our society.
In 1987, there was a conference at Harvard University for higher education educators. At the conference, Frank Rose, the president of Cornell University at the time, proposed an education reform. He said to the audience “We are reaching the point that Universities should pay more attention to students’ “sound values” and “healthy moral values”.
Immediately the audience started to be noisy and criticized him. Then, a student stood up and said, “Whose sense of values are you going to teach us? Who is going to deliver the teaching?” The audience enthusiastically applauded the student’s statement. Mr. Rose went back to his seat without answering any questions.
Why did the audience strongly disagree? Because they defined “sense of values” as a “personal matter”, and each one of us should decide “what we should do and shouldn’t do” based on our own moral standard. Therefore, the audience didn’t want others to lecture them regarding “sense of values” or “morality”. They want to live as they please, because that’s what we defined “freedom” in today’s world.
This conference was held in 1987, meaning, it happened 31 years ago. Not only has our “sense of values” and “morality” not changed since then, but more people support the audience’s ways of thinking all over the world.
Furthermore, this way of thinking is nothing new, but it has been around since the ancient times. The book of Judges in the Old Testament records as the following. In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit. (Judges 21:25)
The kind of world that this way of thinking creates is recorded in Judges. That’s right. The time of the book of Judges was an especially chaotic era in the history of the Bible. Keep this in mind, and let’s look at the verses from Roman chapter 12 again.
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. (Romans 12:1-2)
Everyone, we are looking at Mr. Rose’s words of advice and Paul’s words of advice in the verses. Did you realize that there is a difference between in these two views?
Mr. Rose urged his opinions. I assume that his opinions were based on his experiences as an educator; therefore, I believe they were not irresponsible opinions.
However, when Mr. Rose urged his opinions “It should be this way”, the audience responded “No.” “Leave us alone, who can lecture us on “sense of values” and “morality?” And then, Mr. Rose couldn’t answer their objections. Why was that? I’ve thought about the reason. Because he, too, is a human just like the audience. “How could a human just like us lecture us on his sense of values? How could he teach what’s right and wrong to us?” There is no way to respond to these questions.
On the other hand, Paul urged God’s mercy. That’s the difference between Mr. Rose’s advice and Paul’s advice. There is a great difference in between these two. Paul’s advice is with “God’s mercy” not his “own thoughts”.
Of course, even though the advice is done “in God”, we know that we can simply choose to ignore it, stand against it, or reject it.
We, Japanese people, have a negative legacy towards the subject “God” from World War II. Because, within a day, the Japanese people’s point of view had to change from “The Emperor is God” to “The Emperor is a human”. Therefore, we are extremely cautious towards the word “God”.
Ever since, we don’t take seriously about God, rather, we avoid dealing with the subject. I have heard the following scenario from many individuals. When they told their parents that “Recently, I started to go to a Christian church.”, their parents said “ You might learn something valuable to you, but don’t go too deep into it.” Yet, we can’t remove God’s existence completely from our lives (because at heart we feel fear). We pray for God when we are in trouble, when we need God’s help, and out of obligation we pray to God a few times a year.
If your relationship with your God is just to accomplish moderate obligation, you won’t obey his word. Rather, you live as you please, and only when you are suffering, you say “I rely on you, God.” It is much easier to be carefree; More than we can imagine, we value being carefree.
However, for those, who believe in God’s existence without doubt, they can’t ignore the word of advice with God’s mercy. Because obeying God’s word has great meaning to them, and even as time has passed, the word remains unchanged. Furthermore, we believe that this advice tells us what the best way of living on this earth is.
We need the sense of values, which is not what we conveniently created by ourselves, but what we are given from up there (in heaven). In the world of “everything is ok.”, what we really need is unshakable things like this.
Nowadays, we often hear the word “motivation”. Athletes often use the word when they retire in their prime. Such as “I lost my motivation, therefore, I have decided to retire.”
After a big competition such as the recent Olympics, I think many athletes tend to struggle with things like this. For the last 4 years, their focus was to perform their best at the Olympics, but that is over. What’s now? Are they going to aim to be in the next Olympics in 4 years? If they can’t find something to make them inspired, it’s going to be difficult to face the hard training for the next 4 years because they don’t have the motivation.
One motivation for high school students to study hard is go to the college they want to go to. Someone, who is trying to lose 20 more pounds, has motivation to fit in the clothes he/she wants to wear. For baseball players, high school students, trying to enter the college, to someone, on a diet, we all are moved by motivation.
Everyone, let’s read today’s scripture again. Paul urges us in the following:
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. (Romans 12:1-2)
If we receive this advice as an obligation, we won’t last long. However, these words have something to motivate us. That is “God’s mercy on us”.
In fact, what is the motivation for us to obey God’s teaching when we live as Christians? Do you think that God will protect us from various disasters because we are Christians? Or, do you think that God will help us reach our dreams or goals?
If a Christian has these motivations, one day the person will get stuck in his/her situation because even to Christians, unexpected events happen time to time. All of your goals can not necessarily be achieved, and if you have perfunctory faith, you always have sense of obligation.
Paul first said “God’s mercy”. “God’s mercy”, in other words, is “God’s blessing”. Why did people in the Bible happily serve God? It is because they got to know God’s blessings. That became their motivation. Faith is not “I must to do things”, but Faith is “I can’t help not doing things.”
Apostle, Paul said in I Timothy 1: 13-16.
13 Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. 14 The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
15 Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst.16 But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life. (1Timothy 1:13-16)
He was once a man who arrested Christians and murdered them. Therefore, there is no room for excuses for him. However, God had bottomless mercy on him. Without doubt, Christ came to this world to save sinners. And, among those sinners, Paul declared himself as the worst of sinners. He knew well about God’s mercy shown to him.
He also said God showed him “immense patience”. Unquestionably, God showed immense patience to Paul because he was persecuting Christians. We talk like it is someone else’s business.
However, once you ponder in your heart, not only to Paul, but God also shows immense patience with you. How long have we turned our backs against God? We have God in our lives only when it’s convenient for us and when we need him. Once it’s over, we just leave God aside and forget about him until we need him again. If you do the same thing to your spouse, I am sure that he or she will get fed up with you.
But, God doesn’t leave us. He lets us live today, and he gives us our daily bread. He continues to give us an opportunity to live our lives with God. Therefore, God also shows his immense patience with us, just like he did to Paul.
And, the more Paul knew about God’s patience and mercy on him, the more he desired to live for God, from the bottom of his heart. Paul said, “You also receive God’s mercy just like me. Therefore, offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God. That is not out of an obligation, but that is a natural response to God’s blessings”.
In the past, I saw a movie called “Amazing Grace”. In the movie, a young politician called William Wilberforce was steering anti-slave trade legislation. And, The Hymn Amazing Grace’s writer, John Newton, who lived at the same period, gave advice to Wilberforce.
In the movie, Before Newton loses his eye sight at old age and his memory fades away, Newton told Wilberforce his experiences to testify what he has done in the past, and he made Wilberforce record diary entries. What kind of experiences did he have? I read some documents written about Newton as the following.
The English man, John Newton went to sea at an early age, and he sailed to Africa. The reason was, as he wrote in his autobiography later on, “to commit crime to my heart’s content”. His life was going downhill, and he kept falling down. And, he became the captain of a slave ship carrying slaves from Africa to the New World. I can imagine that Newton did many things other than “transport slaves” because he said that he had a spirit “to commit crime to his heart’s content”.
The ship he was on was hit by a violent storm in the North Atlantic Ocean, and it almost sank. The vessel was badly damaged and filled with sea water. The storm didn’t slow down and they bailed out sea water day after day. It was certain that the vessel would sink, he would sink, and he would be drowned.
However, strangely, when he was bailing out sea water with bucket, Newton remembered the Bible verses that his mother used to teach him in his childhood. The ship passed through the storm, and then he studied to be a preacher, and at last he became the great preacher.
Later, As Newton became old and his memory was fading, he had to quit preaching. When his friends visited him, he used to say: “Although my memory is fading, I remember two things very clearly: I’m a great sinner and Christ is a great savior.”

Was blind but now I see
Jesus Christ said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor. For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” (Matthew 9)
Jesus said “It is not the healthy who needs a doctor.”, however, in reality if God looks around at the people who live in this world, the Bible says no one is “the healthy”. Jesus said, “For I have not come to call the righteous”, however, in reality if God looks around at people who live in this world, the Bible says no one is “the righteous”.
Once, Paul had a strong motivation to “destroy Christians” ,at the same time, he was thrilled to kill Christians. Newton’s motivation to sail to Africa was “to commit crime to his heart’s content”. However, they both reached the motivation, worth changing their lives because of God’s immense patience and mercy, apart from their previous empty motivations.
They both realized the same things in their lives. There is 1600 years difference in between their times, but they both realized that “I am a sick and I am a sinner.” And, they came to know that Jesus forgave them unconditionally and accepted a “worthless man like me.”
Ever since, their motivation of their lives has changed. Paul went to the gentiles to spread the word of Jesus, as for the slave ship’s captain, Newton; he became a preacher in order to spread the word of God. Surely, Christ the Lord’s blessing moved them to the very end. When we realize that God’s blessing is upon us, we will change into one who responds to this God’s blessing.
When you do something out of obligation, you feel the time passes slowly. When you are doing work you don’t like, you feel that the day is so long until the time to leave work. However, if you are doing something worthwhile, you feel that the time to leave work comes in no time. You don’t feel hardship as hardship. You might go home with strong reluctance, wishing you could keep working.
We all want to get such a job if we get a job anyway. Work is only one part of your life. However, don’t you want to live your life including the time you spend at work, motivated by joy, thankfulness, and something worth doing, even if you encounter many hardships, from time to time?
Yes, what we need in order to do that is to realize God’s bottomless blessings upon all of the people, and to live with his blessings. This motivation doesn’t have to renew every four years like Olympic athletes, but it moves us until we return to the heaven.
Finally, Paul was changed and accomplished his life by God’s blessings. Let’s close this message by likening our hearts to his words with his thoughts pouring out of his heart. Let’s read Epiphanes 2:1-10.
As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh[a] and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. 6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7 in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (Ephesians 2:1-10)
Paul is not special. We all are God’s handiwork, and through his handiwork, we are invited to a life in order to glorify God. This word isn’t saying to us “It has to be this way”, but it is the word to move us to “we want to be this way”.
That’s right. The reason for what the Lord Jesus Christ did for us was to make us reach this thought. Let us pray.
