私達は自分の視点、自分の思い込み、自分の願い、自分の都合で自分を見、人を見、教会を見ていないでしょうか。神の視点から見ればそれは憂うべきことなのに、そのことをし続け、いつまでも実りを得ることなく、主が涙を流すような状態の中に生きていることに全く気がつかずにいるということはないでしょうか。

私達がいつも意識していなければならないことは神の視点です。私達は便利さの名のもとに、自分の都合だけで物事を決めていないでしょうか。私達の教会はどうでしょか、私達の都合で、神様が大切にしているものが失われてしまうとするのなら、私達はそれをあらためなければなりません。

神の視点を失わない

 私達は「イエス・キリストを知る」というテーマのもと、ヨハネによる福音書を毎週の礼拝で見ております。今日はその２章からエルサレムの神殿で起きた出来事について目を留めてみましょう。

13さて、ユダヤ人の過越の祭が近づいたので、イエスはエルサレムに上られた。14そして牛、羊、はとを売る者や両替する者などが宮の庭にすわり込んでいるのをごらんになって、15なわでむちを造り、羊も牛もみな宮から追いだし、両替人の金を散らし、その台をひっくりかえし、16はとを売る人々には「これらのものを持って、ここから出て行け。わたしの父の家を商売の家とするな」と言われた。17弟子たちは、「あなたの家を思う熱心が、わたしを食いつくすであろう」と書いてあることを思い出した。18そこで、ユダヤ人はイエスに言った、「こんなことをするからには、どんなしるしをわたしたちに見せてくれますか」。19イエスは彼らに答えて言われた、「この神殿をこわしたら、わたしは三日のうちに、それを起すであろう」。20そこで、ユダヤ人たちは言った、「この神殿を建てるのには、四十六年もかかっています。それだのに、あなたは三日のうちに、それを建てるのですか」。21イエスは自分のからだである神殿のことを言われたのである。22それで、イエスが死人の中からよみがえったとき、弟子たちはイエスがこう言われたことを思い出して、聖書とイエスのこの言葉とを信じた。（ヨハネ２章１３節ー２２節）。

先々週はイエス様がカナでもたれた結婚式において、水をブドウ酒に変えた奇跡について、その背後にはイエス様が私達の心から喜びや楽しみが失われないことを願っておられるということをお話しました。それに対して今、読みました出来事は全く異なるイエス様の姿を記録しています。まさしく、私達は色々な角度からこのイエス様を知らなければなりません。

聖書の中にはマタイ、マルコ、ルカ、ヨハネという四つの福音書があります。これらはそれぞれの書名があらわしている者達によって書かれたもので、イエス・キリストの生涯をそれぞれの視点と共に描いています。ある者は読者がユダヤ人であることを意識して書き、ある者は異邦人を意識して書いています。ゆえに一つの出来事についても、当然、そこにはその出来事に対する観方、とらえ方の違いがあり、それゆえに出来事が立体的に私達の前に浮かび上がってきます。

今日、見てまいります「イエスの宮きよめ」の出来事はこの四つの福音書全てに書かれているもので（皆さんのお手元にその比較表をお配りしていますのでご覧ください）、今、お読みしましたヨハネによる福音書に記録されているものと他の三つの福音書に記録されているものとは全てエルサレムの神殿で起きたことなのですが、この四書を見て分かりますことは、ヨハネのものはイエス様の活動の初期になされたものであり、他の三つはその後期、すなわち最初のものから約三年後、イエス様がエルサレムにロバに乗って入場された時であったと言われています。しかし、学者の中には、ヨハネは時間の流れに即して出来事を記録しているわけではなく、それらは同じ出来事なのだという人達もいます。

私はイエス様が二度、宮においてこのようなことをなされたということは何も不思議ではありませんし、それぞれ四つの福音書の文脈を読む限り、そのほうが自然ではないかと思います。このように取りますと、イエス様はかつて宮においてなされていたことについて身をもってその過ちを指摘したにもかかわらず、彼らは心を入れ替えることなく、あいも変わらず同じことをし続けていたということで、このような人間の懲りない姿というのはいくらでも私達の身の周りでも見ることができるものなのです。そこで、今日はまず最初に「神の側の視点」ということを見てまいりましょう。

神の側の視点

私達はどこに立って、物事を見ているかによって異なる言動をします。イスラエルとパレスチナの問題は当然、イスラエル側の視点とパレスチナ側の視点は異なりますし、この地域に対するアメリカ政府の視点とイラン政府の視点は異なります。会社を経営する者とその会社の従業員は異なる視点をもっています。

宮において動物が売られていたということ、この背景にはこんなことがありました。イスラエル三代目の王であるソロモンによって４６年の歳月をかけて築かれた神殿には当時、たくさんの人が生きた家畜を神に捧げるべく集まってきました。なかには遠方からの巡礼者もいて、その家畜を伴ってくることは大変だったばかりでなく、その家畜は捧げられる前に祭司たちによって調べられ、少しでもその家畜に傷がある場合は捧げものとして認められることなく、その場合、彼らはまたその家畜を持ち帰らなければならなかったのです。

そのために既に祭司の承認を得ている家畜を神殿境内で買うことができるのはとても便利なことでした。しかしながら、１ドルで買えるミネラルウォーターと全く同じものがアミューズメントパークなどで買うと、一本４ドルするというようなことを私達が経験するように、それと同じことが神殿の境内でも繰り広げられていました。また家畜を捧げることができない貧しい者達は鳩を捧げればよろしいというレビ記の律法があるのですが（５章７節、１２章８節）、祭司らはその鳩を殺して捧げずに、捧げられたものを再び、商人に売り渡し再利用して利潤を得ていました。

また巡礼者はそれぞれの出身地の貨幣を使うことができずに、それは一度、ユダヤのシュケルという貨幣に両替することが求められ、ゆえに両替商も境内にいて賑わっていたようです。今日でもある国の路地を歩いていますと「いい割で両替するよ」と小声で声をかけてくる人がいます。彼らは両替のマージンで益を得ているのです。まさしくそれと同じことが神殿境内でおきていました。これらのことがイエス様が活動を始めた初期の神殿の状態で、一度、イエス様はそれを激しく咎めたにもかかわらず、その三年後、いよいよイエス様が十字架にかかる一週間を前にしてもその神殿の状態は何ら変わらず、同じことがなされており、それのみならずマルコが『（イエスは）器ものを持って宮の庭を通り抜けるのをお許しにならなかった』（マルコによる福音書１１章１６節）と記していますように、その時には神殿を大きく迂回することを嫌った商人や地元の人達に神殿内を通行させる代わりに、通行料を徴収している者達もいたようです。

これらのことを祭司も認め、そこに集う巡礼者もしていたというのです。動物がそこにいるのですから羊の鳴き声、鳩の鳴き声、値段を値切ろうとする者の大声、釣銭のジャラジャラとした音、動物がいるのですからその匂い、まさしくそこは騒然としていました。

捧げる動物を境内で調達できること、両替もそこでできること、遠回りをせずに神殿を通り抜けること、これらは彼らにとってどんな意味をもっていたのでしょうか。そうです、それらは彼らにとって「便利」なことだったのです。そして、それを提供する者達はそれによって「利益」も得ていたのですから、いい商売となっていました。まさしく巡礼者にも宮を管理する者達にも、二方のニーズに応えるビジネスがそこに成り立っていたのです。

しかし、イエス様はこれらのことについて激しく怒りをあらわにしました。イエス様は容赦せずに『なわでむちを造り、羊も牛もみな宮から追いだし、両替人の金を散らし、その台をひっくりかえし、16はとを売る人々には「これらのものを持って、ここから出て行け。わたしの父の家を商売の家とするな』（ヨハネ２章１５節‐１６節）と言われたのです。共にいた弟子達はそのイエス様の姿を見て、血の気がひいたことでしょう。「あぁ～やってしまった」という思いです。そうです、神殿の中で祭司や律法学者の前で彼らを咎める、その面子をつぶすような立ち振る舞いをイエス様はなされたのです。なぜですか、そうです、私達の視点とイエス様の視点とは大きく異なっていたからです。

イエス様が１２歳の時、イエスの父ヨセフと母マリアはイエスをこの宮に連れてきました。しかし、そこでイエス様と離ればなれになってしまったのです。イエスを探しに宮に戻ってみますと彼は宮におられ、ヨセフとマリアに向かい、こう言ったのです「どうしてお捜しになったのですか。わたしが自分の父の家にいるはずのことを、ご存じなかったのですか」（ルカ２章４９節）。この父の家についてマルコはイエス様が二度目にこの神殿で繰り広げられていることに対して怒りを表した時にイザヤ５６章７節より引用した言葉として『わたしの家は、すべての国民の祈の家ととなえらるべきである』と書いてあるではないか。それだのに、あなたがたはそれを強盗の巣にしてしまった」と記しています（マルコ１１章１７節）。そうですイエス様は宮を父なる神の家と見、そこをすべての人のための祈りの家と唱えられるべき場として見、その父の祈りの家が強盗の巣窟のようになっているのに怒りを覚え、その場を本来あるべき場として正そうとしたのです。

神殿での商売が続けられていたのは、それが便利であり、自分に都合がいいことであったからです。私達、人間はこのような方におのずと向いていくものです。しかし、その便利さと都合は私達の側の視点であり、その時に私達を見つめておられる主イエスの視点は異なるのです。その視点、その思いの違いゆえにこの神殿でのイエス様の言動は生じ、またその違いゆえにこのことは互いの間に大きな亀裂を生んだのです。

皆さん、私達はいかがでしょうか。自分の視点、自分の思い込み、自分の願いだけで、自分の都合で自分を見、人を見、教会を見ていないでしょうか。神の視点から見ればそれは憂うべきことなのに、そのことをし続け、いつまでも実りを得ることなく、イエス様が涙を流すような状態の中に生きていることに全く気がつかずにいるということはないでしょうか。今日、私達が常に意識していなければならないことはこの神の視点です。私達は便利さの名のもとに、自分の都合だけで物事を決めていないでしょうか。私達の教会はどうでしょか、私達の都合で、神様が大切にしているものが失われてしまうとするのなら、私達はそれをあらためなければなりません。

私達が聖書に学ぶということは、すなわちこの神の視点に気づかされていくということ、その視点を己がものとして、この世界を見ることなのです。二つめのことをお話します。それは「思い起こされる出来事」ということです。

思い起こされる出来事

今日、読みましたところでヨハネは二回、「思い出した」ということを書いています。

弟子たちは「あなたの家を思う熱心が、わたしを食いつくすであろう」と書いてあることを思い出した（ヨハネ２章１７節）。この言葉は詩篇６９篇９節からの引用です。そうです、弟子達は目の前でむちを振り上げているイエス様の父なる神の家に対する熱心な思いが、ついにはイエス様を危険に追い込むことになるだろうということを危惧しました。そして、実際のところ二度目に同じことをしたイエス様は、そのことが原因となり、祭司長や律法学者達はイエスを殺そうと計画をたて、このことがイエス様を十字架への磔へと導いていきました。弟子達はきっと何度も何度もこの詩篇の言葉を聞いていたのでしょう。しかし、その時には、その言葉の意味が分かりませんでした。しかし、宮でのイエス様の姿を見るにつけ、この言葉が思い起こされたのです。

そして、もう一つ弟子達が思い出したことはこのようなことでした。18そこで、ユダヤ人はイエスに言った、「こんなことをするからには、どんなしるしをわたしたちに見せてくれますか」。19イエスは彼らに答えて言われた、「この神殿をこわしたら、わたしは三日のうちに、それを起すであろう」。20そこで、ユダヤ人たちは言った、「この神殿を建てるのには、四十六年もかかっています。それだのに、あなたは三日のうちに、それを建てるのですか」。21イエスは自分のからだである神殿のことを言われたのである。22それで、イエスが死人の中からよみがえったとき、弟子たちはイエスがこう言われたことを思い出して、聖書とイエスのこの言葉とを信じた。（ヨハネ２章１８節ー２２節）。

このことはイエス様の宮での姿から時を経、イエス様が十字架にかかり、そして死から復活された時に弟子達が思い起こしたことです。そう、あの宮でイエス様は「この神殿を壊したら、わたしは三日のうちにそれを起こすであろう」という大胆な言葉を言われた、その時はその場にいたユダヤ人が尋ねたように「この神殿を建てるのには４６年もかかっているのに、イエスはいったい何を言っているのだろうか」と彼らも思っていたに違いありません。しかし、その言葉はあとで思い起こされ、その時にその言葉の本当の意味が弟子達に分かったのです。そうです、すなわちここでイエス様は神殿を自らのからだとして語っておられたということ、自らの肉体は滅ぼされ死にいたるけれど、三日の後にそれは再びよみがえるということです。

イエス様の宮での姿を見た時、「三日で神殿を立て直す」と言われた時、それが何を意味するか弟子達には分からなかったのです。しかし、後になってそのことを思い出して、その意味が全てが分かったのです。

私達にもその時には分からないことがたくさんあります。特に私達が受ける試練や苦労というものの意味が私達には分かりません。分からないということは、すなわちその意味が分からないのです。しかし、そのことも後になって分かる時がきます。分かる時と言うのは、私達の視点では見えなかった、理解できなかったことが、神の視点に、神の計画に気がつかされる時に分かることなのです。

神様の視点と私達の視点は異なります。ゆえに私達にはその時には分からない神様の御心が後になって分かります。全てのことが、その時に分かるのではなく、後になってその時の点が線となって今に繋がっているということに気がつかされるのです。

私達のクリスチャンライフはそのようなものです。その時には分からない。今は分からないことがたくさんあります。しかし、後になって神様は一つ一つ、宝の箱が開かれるようにして、そのことに対して神が秘めていたみ心を明らかにしてくださるのです。皆さんの中にも分からないことがありますでしょう。そういうものは信仰と共に保留しておいてください。主がさやかに示してくれる日がくることでしょう。最後のことをお話します。それは「私達にとっての神殿」ということです。

私達にとっての神殿

イエス様が「この神殿をこわしたら、わたしは三日のうちに、それを起すであろう」と言われ、後になって、イエスがその時に言われたことは、ご自身のからだである神殿のことを言われていたということを悟った時、彼らは自分達の視点とイエス様の視点は異なるということを知りました。

私達が「神殿」と言えば、それは文字通り石が積み上げられた神殿を意味しますが、イエス様のお心の中にはもはやそのような神殿はなく、その神殿は自らのからだ、もっと言いますと私達それぞれのからだも神の宮なのだということを念頭において話しているのです。弟子達の誰一人として、そのことに気がついている者はおらず、彼らは後になって悟ったのです。

そして、ご自身の体を神殿とされたイエス様の思い、その視点はそのまま私達自身に対しても向けられていることなのです。パウロはこの神の視点を知り、それを書き記しました。16あなたがたは神の宮であって、神の御霊が自分のうちに宿っていることを知らないのか。17もし人が、神の宮を破壊するなら、神はその人を滅ぼすであろう。なぜなら、神の宮は聖なるものであり、そして、あなたがたはその宮なのだからである（Ⅰコリント３章１６節‐１７節）。

彼はこのことをコリントの教会に送っています。当時、コリントの街は罪にまみれた場所でした。自らの体を不品行のために用いる者達がその街にはたくさんおり、それが教会の中にまで入ってきていました。そのようなことを見聞きしたパウロは、同じ手紙の中で再度、こう書きました。19あなたがたは知らないのか。自分のからだは、神から受けて自分の内に宿っている聖霊の宮であって、あなたがたは、もはや自分自身のものではないのである。20あなたがたは、代価を払って買いとられたのだ。それだから、自分のからだをもって、神の栄光をあらわしなさい（コリント第一の手紙６章１９節－２０節）。

このコリントの教会におる人の様は、あの宮で商売をしていた者達が自分達が何をしているのか全く気がつかないでいたのと同じです。そうです、彼らは神の宮なる自分の体を好き放題に使っていたのです。神の宮において、その宮本来の目的にかなわないことが成されていたことをイエス様が悲しまれたように、今日、主の宮なる、代価を払って買い取られた、もはや自分自身のものではない私達の体が、その目的とは異なることに用いられるのなら、主はそのことを悲しんでおられます。

しかしながら、私達はこのような主の視点をもつことなく、自分の体なのだから、自分の心なのだからと、好き勝手に生きているのです。しかし、それは私達の視点であって、神様は私達のことをそのようには見ていないのです。自分のことなどは誰も気にかけていない、この体なんてどうなってもいい、それは私達の視点であって、それは神様の視点ではないのです。そうです、私達は自分のからだをもって神の栄光をあらわすように命が与えられ、そのように生きることが期待されているのです。

願わくば、私達がこの神様の視点に少しでも近づくことができますように。その時には気がつかなかったことの背後にある神のはたらきに気がつくことができますように。そして、私達はなぜ、今ここにいるのか、私達は何のために生きているのか、そう、神の栄光のために私はあなたに命を与えたのだという、その主の御声を私達が聞くことができますように。お祈りしましょう。

Do not lose God’s point of view

 Every week, we have been studying the Gospel According to John under the theme of “To Know Christ”. Today, from its 2^nd chapter, let us look at an incidence that took place at the Temple of Jerusalem.

¹³ When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. ¹⁴ In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. ¹⁵ So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. ¹⁶ To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house into a market!” ¹⁷ His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.” ¹⁸ The Jews then responded to him, “What sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?” ¹⁹ Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.” ²⁰ They replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” ²¹ But the temple he had spoken of was his body. ²² After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken. (John 2:13-22)

Two weeks ago, from the miracle Jesus performed at a wedding at Cana, we learned that Jesus always cares for us so that we do not lose joy and happiness from our hearts. In contrast, the scripture we have just read records an entirely different side of Jesus. We must know Jesus from all angles.

The Bible contains 4 books of gospel: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. These were written by each of these authors and recorded the life of Jesus Christ from respective viewpoint. Some were written for Jewish audience, while others were written for gentiles.

For that reason, even the same event is recorded from different view point and understanding. That is why we can get a three-dimensional view of such event.

This episode of “cleansing by Jesus” is recorded in all four gospel books. (I have distributed comparison sheet to you this morning.) This episode takes place at the Temple of Jerusalem. When we look at these four descriptions, we can see that John describes the episode as taking place at the beginning of his mission, while other three describe it as an event three years after that, namely, when Jesus entered Jerusalem on the back of a donkey. Some other scholars point out that John’s records do not follow chronological order. They say John’s story and others are one and the same.

But, it is not impossible that Jesus cleansed the temple twice. That interpretation could be more natural when we read all four gospels. If so, this story tells us that although Jesus had openly pointed out their mistake in their face earlier, these people did not change their minds and continued their sinful ways. Sadly, such human behavior is widely observed even today and around us. First, let us study “God’s point of view.”

God’s point of view

Our behavior is influenced greatly by where we stand. The problem between Israel and Palestine is a good example. Israeli side and Palestinian side look at their conflict from different viewpoints.  The viewpoint of US government on this conflict is different from viewpoint of Iranian government. We can also see similar discrepancy in business circumstances. Managements have different viewpoint from that of the employees.

There was a good reason that animals were sold at the temple. The temple was built over the period of 46 years by King Solomon, the third king of Israel. Many people came to the temple to offer live animal sacrifice. It was not easy for these people to bring the animals to the temple from faraway places. On top of that, these animals had to be inspected by the priests to make sure they were not blemished. If the animals did not pass the inspection, they were rejected.

So, it was very convenient if people could purchase pre-approved animals at the temple site. However, as you know, a mineral water costing 1 dollar could be sold for 4 dollars at an amusement park. Similar situations were observed in the temple. A law in Leviticus (5:7, 12:8) says that the poor who cannot offer animal sacrifice can offer a dove. But, the priests did not kill the dove they received from the pilgrims for offering and made money by making the same doves available to the merchants for re-sale.

Pilgrims from foreign lands were not allowed to use their currencies. They had to be converted by money changers in the temple to the Jewish money Shekel. When we travel to some country, street merchants call us that they can exchange money for a very good rate. Money changers make profit from the margin. Exact same thing used to take place in the temple. These used to happen at the temple when Jesus started his mission. Although Jesus scolded them at that time, the same things were happening three years afterwards, when Jesus returned to Jerusalem. Not only that, Mark writes:[Jesus] would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts.(Mark 11:15-16) It seems that some even collected transit fees from merchants and local people who did not want to take a long way around the temple.

These were condoned by the priests and some pilgrims profited from it. Since animals were offered for sale, sounds made by animals and doves, bargaining people, and coins created a noisy and smelly circumstances. It was chaotic.

What did people think about the fact that they can buy animals, exchange money, and take a shortcut through the temple? They thought these services presented convenience. And, the people who offered these services benefited from it, too. It was a good business. These business opportunities filled the needs of both pilgrims and managers of the temple.

But, Jesus was furious and expressed his anger to them. It is written that[Jesus] made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.¹⁶ To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house into a market!”(John 2:15-16)  Disciples of Jesus were appalled looking at Jesus doing so. They thought “Oh, no.” Jesus scolded the merchants in front of the priests and teachers of the law. This was not welcome by these people. Why did Jesus do so? It was because the viewpoint of Jesus was different from ours.

When Jesus was 12 years old, his father Joseph and mother Mary took Jesus to the temple. There, they lost track of Jesus. When they went back to the temple to look for Jesus, Jesus said to Joseph and Mary:  “Why were you searching for me? Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?”(Luke 2:49)  Mark recorded what Jesus said when he saw this scene in the temple for the second time. Jesus was quoting from Isaiah Chapter 56. Namely,¹⁷ And as he taught them, he said, “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’? But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’” (Mark 11:17)  Yes, Jesus saw the temple as the house of his father and a house of prayer for all people. Jesus was angry because the sacred house of prayer was turned into a den of robbers. He wanted correct the situation.

These commercial activities were continued because they offered convenience and benefits. We tend to see from that point of view. But that is our point of view, and it is quite different from the view point of Jesus looking at us. This difference in view and thinking caused Jesus to show anger. Difference in viewpoints trigger many conflicts amount us, also.

Brothers and sisters, are we looking at people and church only from our viewpoint, our thinking, and our desire? Some behaviors are not welcomed by God. But, we continue to do so and live in a way that causes Jesus to cry. And, yet, we do not even realize that. It is important to remember that the viewpoint of God is different. Are we making decisions in the name of convenience and what we want? How about our church? If what is important to God is lost in favor of our convenience, we must correct our attitude.

When we study the Bible, our eyes are opened to the viewpoint of God. We learn to look at the world from that viewpoint. The second point is: “Events we recall.”

Events we recall

In the scripture reading this morning, John said he “remembered” twice.

¹⁷ His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.” (John 2:17)   This is a quotation from Psalm 69:9. The disciples knew that Jesus swung a whip because Jesus loved the house of God. But, at the same time, the disciples were worried that this might put Jesus in danger. In fact, when Jesus scolded people in the temple the second time, this prompted the priests and teachers of the law to plot to kill and execute Jesus on the cross. The disciples must have heard these words in Psalms many times before. But, they did not really understand the meaning. But, they remembered these words looking at what Jesus did in the temple.

Another thing the disciples remembered is written in this way: ¹⁸ The Jews then responded to him, “What sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?” ¹⁹ Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.” ²⁰ They replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” ²¹ But the temple he had spoken of was his body. ²² After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken. (John 2:18-22)

Only after Jesus was crucified and resurrected from the dead, these disciples recalled what Jesus said and did in the temple. Yes, Jesus said that he would raise the temple in three days after it was destroyed. These disciples, like other people who heard what Jesus declared, did not understand because they also thought it was impossible to rebuild the temple which took forty-six years to build. But these words were recalled later, and the disciples realized the true meaning of the words. Jesus used to refer to his body as a temple of God, he was saying that although his body is destroyed and put to death, his temple of God will be restored in three days.

When the disciples saw Jesus at the temple, they could not understand what Jesus meant when he said the temple would be re-built in three days. But, afterwards, when they recalled, they finally understood the meaning.

There are so many things we do not understand at the beginning. We cannot understand why we have to face hardship and tribulation. We do not understand the meaning or significance of them. But, later, time comes, when we understand why. We cannot understand as long as we see events through our viewpoint. But, we understand when we learn to see through God’s viewpoint, and when we see what God had planned for us.

God’s viewpoint is different from ours. That is why it takes time for us to come to understand God’s way of thinking. We do not understand at the beginning. But, later, we can connect the dots and realize that these dots form a line leading up to now.

Our Christian life is like that. We do not understand at the beginning. We do not understand so many things now. But, God will reveal his heart to us eventually. It is like opening a treasure box. We discover how grand the plan of God is. If you have things you do not understand now, please keep them in your heart with your faith. A day will come when God reveals the meaning to us. The last point is “our temple”

Our temple

Jesus said “Destroy this temple. And I will rebuild it in three days.” And we understood later that he was referring to temple that was his body. We also learned that our viewpoint is different from that of Jesus.

Normally, when we talk about a temple, we think about a temple built from stones. But, there was no such temple in the heart of Jesus. What he had in mind was his own body, and body of each of us. None of the disciples realized that. They realized this viewpoint much later.

This viewpoint of Jesus, which regards his own body as a temple, also views our body in the same way. Paul understood this viewpoint of Jesus and wrote:¹⁶ Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst? ¹⁷ If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for God’s temple is sacred, and you together are that temple. (I Corinthians 3:16-17)

Paul sent this message to Corinthian church. Corinth in those days was smeared in sins. Many residents used their body for immoral purposes. Even churches were not spared from that kind of behavior. When Paul heard and observed that, he wrote the following in the same letter:¹⁹ Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; ²⁰ you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies. (I Corinthians 6:19-20)

These people in Corinth were like the merchants in that temple. They did not realize what they were doing. They were abusing their body, the temple of God, as they pleased. Jesus shed tears when he observed the temple in a terrible state that was far different from its original intent. Our body, which is a temple, was purchased at a price.  If so, it is no longer our body. Jesus would be sad to know that such temple is used for wrong purposes.

But, we live the way we please thinking that our body and mind are ours, ignoring the viewpoint of God. But, that is only our viewpoint. God looks at our body differently. If we think nobody cares how we use our body, that is because of our viewpoint. And, it is not the viewpoint of God. We are given our life so that we can reveal the glory of God with it and we are expected to behave accordingly.

May we understand the God’s viewpoint better! May our eyes be opened to the works of God behind things that we did not understand before! And, may we understand why we are here, what is our purpose of life! May we listen to the voice of God who says God has granted our life for the glory of God! Let us pray.

２）なぜ人々は宮で家畜を売り始めたり、両替をしたり、近道のために宮を通行するものに通行費をとるようになったのでしょうか。

 

３）イエス様の宮に対する視点と私達のそれとはどう違いましたか（ヨハネ２章１５節、１６節、ルカ２章４９節、マルコ１１章１７節）。私達の教会に対して、私達の「都合」や「便利さ」を優先させるあまりに、神様の視点を失っているのではないかということがありますか。

４）私達の教会でも「ファンドレイズ」をしたり、教会によっては「ガレージセール」をするところもあります。これらのことは今日、見ております宮での出来事と同じですか。

 

５）ヨハネ２章１７節、ヨハネ２章１８節ー２２節にはそれぞれ「思い出した」ということが書かれています。それぞれの状況を確認しましょう。

 

６）神様の視点と私達の視点とは異なるために、私達は後になってそのことに気がつかされることがあります。あなたはそのような経験をしたことがありますか。このことは、私達が現在、直面している意味も理由も分からない試みに対して、私達はどのように対処すればいいのかということを教えてくれますか。

 

７）イエス様は神殿を自らのからだとしました。そして、私達各々のからだも聖霊の宮なのだと聖書は言います。Ⅰコリント３章１６節‐１７節、６章１９節－２０節を読みましょう。これらを読むときにあなたは自分のからだに対して考え方が変わりますか。私達は自らのからだをどのように取り扱うべきでしょうか。
