「数字」というのはとても大切なものです。なぜなら経済成長をあらわす数字にしても血圧の数値にしても、数字はハッキリとその現状を指し示すものだからです。あの田中角栄が国民の支持を得たのは、生まれもったカリスマ性と、剛胆でありながらも、誰も真似できない細かな気配りがあったと言われますが、同時に氏が類い希な記憶力をもっていて、日本国の現状というものを官僚が舌を巻くほどに、全て資料を見ずとも、数字で言い表すことができたからでした。数字には強い説得力があり、そのことによって国民は日本が、ひいては自分が置かれている状況をはっきりと把握することができたのです。

民数記：荒野で生きるために

皆さんのお手元にエジプトで奴隷となっていたイスラエルの民がそこから脱出した後、どのような歩みをしたかという表があると思います。それによりますと出エジプト記でイスラエルの民はエジプトの奴隷となっていましたが、神様はその中からモーセという一人の人を選び、彼のもと民は荒野に逃れます。その荒野で神はご自身が居る場所として、幕屋の作成を指示し、民はその幕屋を中心とした生活を始め、続くレビ記では、その彼らが他民族とは異なる聖なる民となるべく、事細かな律法を一ヶ月かけて神様からいただいたことが記されています。そして、その後の３９年におよぶ荒野での生活について記しているのがこの民数記なのです。
民数記はイスラエルの民が、実生活で様々な状況に直面していく中で神様が彼らを導かれ、整え、訓練していく様を記しています。まさしく、それは私達が日々の暮らしにおいて予期せぬ様々な状況に直面することによって神様によって教えられ、整えられていくことを思い起こさせます。このところから今日は三つのポイントをお話します。一つ目は「秩序を求められる神」、二つ目が「失敗を繰り返す人間」、そして最後に「試みの中の希望」ということです。
秩序を求められる神
そもそも、この書はなぜ「民数記」、すなわち民の数の記録と書くのでしょうか。英語聖書ではもっとストレートに「Numbers」と呼んでいます。その理由として、民数記は一章からこのような言葉によって始まっているのです。
1エジプトの国を出た次の年の二月一日に、主はシナイの荒野において、会見の幕屋で、モーセに言われた、2「あなたがたは、イスラエルの人々の全会衆を、その氏族により、その父祖の家によって調査し、そのすべての男子の名の数を、ひとりびとり数えて、その総数を得なさい。3イスラエルのうちで、すべて戦争に出ることのできる二十歳以上の者を、あなたとアロンとは、その部隊にしたがって数えなければならない。4また、すべての部族は、おのおの父祖の家の長たるものを、ひとりずつ出して、あなたがたと協力させなければならない。
ここに記されていることは実にその数、数百万人にもなるイスラエルの民の人口調査を意味しており、この調査はこの一章のみならず二回目として２６章にも記されています。そこにはこの民族は何万何千人、こちらは何万何千人というように多くの数字が記録されています。そして、このような聖書箇所は先週お話ししましたレビ記同様に読む側にとってはなかなか退屈で、大変なことなのです。

神様が指示したこの人口調査も、それがなされることにより、荒野での移動と宿営の配置が整然と決められるようになり、それぞれの奉仕の分担が可能となりました。それにより、情報伝達方法が整理され、神様からモーセに語られた指示が民に伝えられやすくなりました。これらは全て神様がモーセを通じてイスラエルの民に命じたことであり、このことなくして彼らの荒野での生活はありえませんでした。
そもそも、このことは天地万物の創造のはじめから確認できることでした。この宇宙、自然界を見ます時に、そこには緻密な法則があり、それらは秩序正しく造られており、私達はそのことを発見する旅に感動するのです。一見、創造の秩序を破壊しているように見える弱肉強食という世界も、大きな目でみれば、それ自体が生態系という秩序には欠かせないものとなっているのです。今日の環境問題とは神様が最初に定められたこの創造の秩序を私達が壊し始めた時に起きたと言っていいでしょう。
これらから分かることはコリント第一の手紙１４章３３節も「神は無秩序の神ではなく、平和の神である」と記しているとおり、神様は私達にも「秩序」を求めておられるのです。これは私達には意外な発見かもしれません。そんなこと考えたこともなかったかもしれません。しかし、それは私達が神様に従おうとする時に必要なことなのです。民数記９章１５節-２３節から具体的な例を一つあげましょう。
15幕屋を建てた日に、雲は幕屋をおおった。それはすなわち、あかしの幕屋であって、夕には、幕屋の上に、雲は火のように見えて、朝にまで及んだ。16常にそうであって、昼は雲がそれをおおい、夜は火のように見えた。17雲が幕屋を離れてのぼる時は、イスラエルの人々は、ただちに道に進んだ。また雲がとどまる所に、イスラエルの人々は宿営した。
18すなわち、イスラエルの人々は、主の命によって道に進み、主の命によって宿営し、幕屋の上に雲がとどまっている間は、宿営していた。19幕屋の上に、日久しく雲のとどまる時は、イスラエルの人々は主の言いつけを守って、道に進まなかった。20また幕屋の上に、雲のとどまる日の少ない時もあったが、彼らは、ただ主の命にしたがって宿営し、主の命にしたがって、道に進んだ。21また雲は夕から朝まで、とどまることもあったが、朝になって、雲がのぼる時は、彼らは道に進んだ。また昼でも夜でも、雲がのぼる時は、彼らは道に進んだ。22ふつかでも、一か月でも、あるいはそれ以上でも、幕屋の上に、雲がとどまっている間は、イスラエルの人々は宿営していて、道に進まなかったが、それがのぼると道に進んだ。23すなわち、彼らは主の命にしたがって宿営し、主の命にしたがって道に進み、モーセによって、主が命じられたとおりに、主の言いつけを守った。
イスラエルの民は「三日後には移動です」というような予告が全くない、それが朝でも昼でも夜中でも、雲が幕屋から離れてのぼる時は、いつでも彼らは旅立ち、雲が幕屋の上にとどまるなら、そこに宿営し、そのまま雲が動かないのなら、それが三日であっても２ヶ月でも３年であっても、そこに留まったというのです。しかも、それが移動であれ宿営であれ、その民の数は数百万人なのですから、このことが実現するためには常に彼らにはそのための心構えと備えが必要となりました。そして、そのために最重要、不可欠なことは秩序だったのです。
この秩序は私達の家庭、職場、そして教会にもとても大切なことなのです。これがなければ、それぞれの現場で主の御用にフルに従うことができないからです。「偶然は準備をしていない人を助けない」とはフランスの細菌学者、パスツールの言葉ですが、主と共にさせていただくはたらきも私達の秩序ある準備があってこそ、それが最大限になされていくのです。二つ目のことをお話しします。それは「失敗」です。
失敗
これまで「秩序」について話してきましたが、ここで確認しておくべきことは、では「秩序があればいいのか」ということです。その答えは「秩序だけでは不十分だ」ということです。なぜなら、その秩序を形作り、それを実際に保ち、信仰をもって実行していくのは生身の人間である私達自身だからです。それゆえに、イスラエルの民は大きな失敗を犯しました。民数機１３章以降に記されている出来事がそのことを示しています。
1主はモーセに言われた、2「人をつかわして、わたしがイスラエルの人々に与えるカナンの地を探らせなさい。すなわち、その父祖の部族ごとに、すべて彼らのうちのつかさたる者ひとりずつをつかわしなさい」。
なぜ、「カナンの地を探らせなさい」と言われたのか。彼らが進む先にはその前進を阻む人達がいるからです。皆さん、これが私達の人生です。私達の行く手には私達が前に進むことを阻むものがあります。聖書は私達が神と共に歩む時に、前方の山や谷がなくなるとは書いていません。アブラハムにしても、このモーセ、ダビデにしても、預言者達、イエスの弟子達、パウロにしても彼らのゆく手には常に山がありました。しかし、神様はそんな私達にその山を共に乗り越えていくようにといわれます。そして、新しい地を確保するように言われます。
この場合、そのために既に秩序正しく１２部族に区分されたイスラエルの民の中の、これまた秩序正しく選ばれていた司、１２人が偵察に遣わされました。彼らは４０日かけてカナンの地の偵察を終えて帰り、モーセと会衆の前で報告しました。そのうち１０人の報告はこのようなものでした。
27彼らはモーセに言った、「わたしたちはあなたが、つかわした地へ行きました。そこはまことに乳と蜜の流れている地です。これはそのくだものです。28しかし、その地に住む民は強く、その町々は堅固で非常に大きく、わたしたちはそこにアナクの子孫がいるのを見ました。29またネゲブの地には、アマレクびとが住み、山地にはヘテびと、エブスびと、アモリびとが住み、海べとヨルダンの岸べには、カナンびとが住んでいます」（民数記１３章２７節－２９節）
それに対してユダの部族、カレブは動揺する民を静めてこう言いました「わたしたちはすぐにのぼって、攻め取りましょう。わたしたちは必ず勝つことができます」(３０節)。
しかし、それに対して１０人の代表者は言いました「わたしたちはその民のところへ攻めのぼることはできません。彼らはわたしたちよりも強いからです・・・。わたしたちが行き巡って探った地は、そこに住む者を滅ぼす地です。またその所でわたしたちが見た民はみな背の高い人々です。33わたしたちはまたそこで、ネピリムから出たアナクの子孫ネピリムを見ました。わたしたちには自分が、いなごのように思われ、また彼らにも、そう見えたに違いありません」。（３１節－３３節）
この二つの言葉を受けて、イスラエルの会衆はみな、声をあげて叫び、その夜泣き明かしました。そして、モーセに向かってつぶやき言いました。2「ああ、わたしたちはエジプトの国で死んでいたらよかったのに。この荒野で死んでいたらよかったのに。3なにゆえ、主はわたしたちをこの地に連れてきて、つるぎに倒れさせ、またわたしたちの妻子をえじきとされるのであろうか。エジプトに帰る方が、むしろ良いではないか」（民数記１４章２節－３節）。そして彼らは互いに言いました「わたしたちはひとりのかしらを立てて、エジプトに帰ろう」（４節）。
１０人の司の報告を受け、彼らは怖じ気づき、エジプトに帰ろう、昔のライフスタイルに戻ろうという思いにかられました。そう、エジプトに戻るとはまた奴隷の身分に自らをおとしめようということです。人は困難に直面しますと過去を懐かしく思い、「あの時はよかった」と言います。しかし、実際はその時だって色々あったのです。それでも、私達はあの時が、あの時がと言うのです。皆さんにも心当たりはないでしょうか。
どうぞ覚えて下さい。感染するのはフルーばかりではないのです。恐れやつぶやきも簡単に人から人に感染します。フルーに対する予防はしても、私達はこの「つぶやきや恐れ」の感染にはどのように対処しているでしょうか。それが事実であろうとなかろうと、私達が思う以上に簡単に私達はこれにinfectしてしまうのです。恐れを広め、またそれに感染し、つぶやき、その不信仰をあらわにした民達に神様は言われました。
33あなたがたの子たちは、あなたがたの死体が荒野に朽ち果てるまで四十年のあいだ、荒野で羊飼となり、あなたがたの不信の罪を負うであろう。34あなたがたは、かの地を探った四十日の日数にしたがい、その一日を一年として、四十年のあいだ、自分の罪を負い、わたしがあなたがたを遠ざかったことを知るであろう」。35主なるわたしがこれを言う。わたしは必ずわたしに逆らって集まったこの悪い会衆に、これをことごとく行うであろう。彼らはこの荒野に朽ち、ここで死ぬであろう』」。36こうして、モーセにつかわされ、かの地を探りに行き、帰ってきて、その地を悪く言い、全会衆を、モーセにむかって、つぶやかせた人々、37すなわち、その地を悪く言いふらした人々は、疫病にかかって主の前に死んだが、38その地を探りに行った人々のうち、ヌンの子ヨシュアと、エフンネの子カレブとは生き残った。
民数記によりますと、この後もイスラエルの民のつぶやきは終わることがありませんでした（民数記１６章３節、１１節・・・）。それは繰り返されていくのです。とても残念なことです。しかし、これが人間の姿なのです。そして、その民達が自ら招いた日々はどのようなものになったのでしょうか。民数記３３章などを見ますと、そこにはイスラエルの民達が「どこそこを出立し、宿営し、出立し、宿営し・・・」と延々と書かれています。それは出発するのですが、行き先が分からずにどこにも到着しないという、目的のない旅のようです。何も成し遂げることもなく、何かを達成するという喜びもない。信仰を失い、神の約束を疑う時に、せっかく秩序をもって民をまとめていても、そこには空しい生活があるのです。ですから、このことに対してヘブル３章１２節‐１９節は私達に励ましの言葉を記しています。
12兄弟たちよ。気をつけなさい。あなたがたの中には、あるいは、不信仰な悪い心をいだいて、生ける神から離れ去る者があるかも知れない。13あなたがたの中に、罪の惑わしに陥って、心をかたくなにする者がないように、「きょう」といううちに、日々、互に励まし合いなさい。14もし最初の確信を、最後までしっかりと持ち続けるならば、わたしたちはキリストにあずかる者となるのである。15それについて、こう言われている、「きょう、み声を聞いたなら、神にそむいた時のように、あなたがたの心を、かたくなにしてはいけない」。16すると、聞いたのにそむいたのは、だれであったのか。モーセに率いられて、エジプトから出て行ったすべての人々ではなかったか。17また、四十年の間、神がいきどおられたのはだれに対してであったか。罪を犯して、その死かばねを荒野にさらした者たちに対してではなかったか。18また、神が、わたしの安息に、はいらせることはしない、と誓われたのは、だれに向かってであったか。
不従順な者に向かってではなかったか。19こうして、彼らがはいることのできなかったのは、不信仰のゆえであることがわかる。
今日、このところから教訓を得ましょう。私達の旅路において気をつけなくてはならないのは、この不信仰とつぶやきです。これがために私達は大切な一度きりの人生の旅路を空しきものにしてしまことがありませんように、「今日」といううちに、日々、互いに励まし合おうではありませんか！三つ目のことをお話ししましょう。それは試みの中の希望ということです。
試みの中の希望
このように自らの不信仰によりイスラエルの民の荒野での生活は４０年にもおよび、その多くの者達は神様から約束されていた地に入ることも許されず、荒野で死ぬことになりました。しかし、その彼らの生活を神様は全く見捨てたかというと、そうではなく、その荒野のの中にも神様は彼らに希望を示されました。そして、その希望はあるものの型となっている希望だったのです。民数記２１章４節－９節を読みましょう。
4民はホル山から進み、紅海の道をとおって、エドムの地を回ろうとしたが、民はその道に堪えがたくなった。5民は神とモーセとにむかい、つぶやいて言った、
「あなたがたはなぜわたしたちをエジプトから導き上って、荒野で死なせようとするのですか。ここには食物もなく、水もありません。わたしたちはこの粗悪な食物はいやになりました」。6そこで主は、火のへびを民のうちに送られた。へびは民をかんだので、イスラエルの民のうち、多くのものが死んだ。7民はモーセのもとに行って言った、「わたしたちは主にむかい、またあなたにむかい、つぶやいて罪を犯しました。どうぞへびをわたしたちから取り去られるように主に祈ってください」。モーセは民のために祈った。8そこで主はモーセに言われた、「火のへびを造って、それをさおの上に掛けなさい。すべてのかまれた者が仰いで、それを見るならば生きるであろう」。9モーセは青銅で一つのへびを造り、それをさおの上に掛けて置いた。すべてへびにかまれた者はその青銅のへびを仰いで見て生きた。
民のつぶやきに対して神様は蛇を送り、その蛇が彼らを咬んだというのです。彼らのいたのは荒野ですから、私達がこのあたりのブッシュで見かけるようなガラガラ蛇のようなものだったのかもしれません。今なら血清があり、咬まれてもすぐに処置をすれば命の危険はありませんが、やはり、血清も打たずにそのままにしておけば命を落とします。
その現状にモーセは民のために神様にとりなすのです。それに対して神様は蛇を作り、それをさおの上にかけるように命じ、かまれた者で、その青銅の蛇を仰ぎ見る者は死ぬことなく生きるようになったというのです。このことは一つの型となっており、ヨハネ３章１４節以降にイエス・キリストの言葉としてこう記録されています。
14そして、ちょうどモーセが荒野でへびを上げたように、人の子もまた上げられなければならない。15それは彼を信じる者が、すべて永遠の命を得るためである」。16神はそのひとり子を賜わったほどに、この世を愛して下さった。それは御子を信じる者がひとりも滅びないで、永遠の命を得るためである。17神が御子を世につかわされたのは、世をさばくためではなく、御子によって、この世が救われるためである。 ヨハネ３章１４節－１７節
常識で考えますと、蛇を見上げることによって、咬まれた傷が直ることはないので、私達はそのようなことをしません。ですから、もし、その蛇を見上げるとしたら、そうさせるのは私達の信仰なのです。私達は信じて見上げるのです。同じ事がイエス・キリストの十字架にも言えるというのです。十字架にあげられたキリストを信じて見上げるのなら、その人は滅びることなく、永遠の命を得るというのが私達に対する聖書の約束なのです。預言者イザヤは記しているではないですか「地の果てのすべての者よ。わたしを仰ぎ見て救われよ。わたしが神である。ほかにはいない」イザヤ４５章２２節
皆さん、私達の日々の旅路はまさしくこのイスラエルの民の荒野での生活のようです。神様にいついかなる時でも用いていただくために、私達は予め自らができる備えをもって整え、動けるようにしておくのです。神に用いられる説教者は何もしないのに神様が用いているのではありません。神に用いられる奉仕者は何もしないのに神様が用いているのではありません。神に用いられるビジネスマンは何もしないのに神様が用いているのではありません。彼らは常日頃、いつも自分の側でできる最善を、信仰をもって、備えているのです。
長い旅路には失敗することもあるでしょう。不信仰に陥ってしまい、遠回りをしたり、空しい日々を送るようなこともあるかもしれません。しかし、その時は再び、信仰の目をもって主を見上げるのです。神様はあの不従順であったイスラエルの民にも憐れみを注いだのです。それは、やがて来るイエス・キリストを指さしていたものであり、実に神はその一人子をお与えになられたほどに私達を愛してくださっているのです。ダビデは記しているではありませんか、「主を仰ぎ見て、光を得よ。そうすれば、あなたがたは、恥じて顔を赤くすることはない」（詩篇３４篇３節）。私達は信仰をもってこの主を仰ぎ見るのです。詩篇６６篇１２節に「われらは火の中、水の中を通った。しかし、あなたは我らを広いところに導きだされた」とありますように、たとえ私達がその不信仰ゆえに火の中、水の中を通ろうとも、私達が主を見上げる時に、主は再び私達を広きところへと導いてくださるお方なのです。お祈りしましょう。
Numbers : Living in the wilderness

I believe you have a table at hand showing chronological movement of the Israelites after they were freed from slavery in Egypt. In Exodus, Israelites were slaves in Egypt. But, God helped them to free the Israelites to the wilderness with Moses, where God commanded them to create the tabernacle for God so that they could start the life around the tabernacle. In the next book of Leviticus, God presented the Israelites over the period of one month with detailed law. And this book of Numbers describes the life in the wilderness extending over 39 years.
The Numbers describes how God himself has led, taught, and trained the people as they face different challenges. This reminds us how God teaches us and guides us through unexpected challenges and situations we face in our daily life. I would like to go over three points today.
They are “God demands order”, “People repeat mistakes”, and “Hope in tribulation.”
God demands order
Why is this book called the book of Numbers? Or, book of census? The name “Numbers” is a very straight forward name. One can see the reason for the name from the opening paragraphs of the Numbers.
1One day in midspring, during the second year after Israel’s departure from Egypt, the LORD spoke to Moses in the Tabernacle in the wilderness of Sinai. He said, 2“Take a census of the whole community of Israel by their clans and families. List the names of all the men 3twenty years old or older who are able to go to war. You and Aaron are to direct the project, 4assisted by one family leader from each tribe.”
This order from God was for a population census of the Israelites which was supposed to be in the millions. This is mentioned once in Chapter 1 and in Chapter 26 again. It talks about counting the population of each tribe. Stating which tribe had how many men, and such. This book also makes a very tedious reading just like the Leviticus, and requires a lot of efforts to read it.
But numbers are very real and important. Economic performance is measured in numbers, so is the blood pressure. These numbers tell us our status. Former Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka was very popular among the mass not only because of his charismatic personality, his vigor and his human touch, but also because of his amazing ability to cite statistics about the state of the nation without referring to any notes. Numbers are very persuasive. Voters of Japan liked Tanaka because they could clearly understand where they stood.
This population census God commanded also helped to create order and structure to the life in the wilderness, and defined the role of each group. With this, information channels were established, and facilitated transmission of commands Moses received from God. These were ordered by God through Moses. Without this, there could not be any life in the wilderness.
The same thing can be observed from the creation of this universe. When we observe our universe and the nature around us, we find them to be very orderly, they were designed with care. We are moved when we realize that. In a larger sense, seemingly chaotic world of predator-prey system is one of the important ingredients of the ecological scheme. Perhaps today’s environmental problems have started when we began to destroy the orderliness set up by God.
As is stated in First Corinthians Chapter 14 Verse 33: “For God is not a God of disorder but of peace”, God wants order in our life, too. Perhaps this is new and we may have never thought about this before. But, such order is very important when we try to follow God. Let us look at one example in Numbers Chapter 9 Verses 15-23:
15The Tabernacle was set up, and on that day the cloud covered it. Then from evening until morning the cloud over the Tabernacle appeared to be a pillar of fire. 16This was the regular pattern—at night the cloud changed to the appearance of fire. 17When the cloud lifted from over the sacred tent, the people of Israel followed it. And wherever the cloud settled, the people of Israel camped. 18In this way, they traveled at the LORD’S command and stopped wherever he told them to. Then they remained where they were as long as the cloud stayed over the Tabernacle. 19If the cloud remained over the Tabernacle for a long time, the Israelites stayed for a long time, just as the LORD commanded. 20Sometimes the cloud would stay over the Tabernacle for only a few days, so the people would stay for only a few days. Then at the LORD’S command they would break camp. 21Sometimes the cloud stayed only overnight and moved on the next morning. But day or night, when the cloud lifted, the people broke camp and followed. 22Whether the cloud stayed above the Tabernacle for two days, a month, or a year, the people of Israel stayed in camp and did not move on. But as soon as it lifted, they broke camp and moved on. 23So they camped or traveled at the LORD’S command, and they did whatever the LORD told them through Moses.
The Israelites were not given 3-day warning to move. Whenever the cloud lifted from the tabernacle, morning, daytime, or middle of night, they moved. If the cloud stayed above the Tabernacle, they camped. If the cloud did not move, they stayed, whether for 3 days, 2 months, or for three years. Whether they had to move or stay, millions of Israelite people had to do so. So, they were taught to be vigilant and be ready. And for that, order was a very important ingredient.
Such order is also very important in our family life, at work, and here in church.
Without such order, we cannot perform our given role to the fullest. French microbiologist Pasteur said: “Chance favors the prepared mind.” Only when there is order in our life and we are prepared, can we carry on our assigned work to the fullest degree.
The second point is “We make mistakes”.
We make mistakes
Thus far, we talked about order. But, we must ask ourselves if order alone is sufficient. Well, order by itself is not enough. This is because the one who structures the order, maintain, and carry it out with faith is us, human being.
It was no surprise when Israelites made a huge mistake. This is recorded starting in Chapter 13 of the Numbers.
1The LORD now said to Moses, 2“Send men to explore the land of Canaan, the land I am giving to Israel. Send one leader from each of the twelve ancestral tribes.”
Why did God commanded to explore the land of Canaan? It was because there were people blocking their way. This is our life. There are obstacles standing in our way in our life. The Bible did not say that hills and valleys blocking our way would disappear when we walk with God. There were hills blocking Abraham, Moses, David, prophets, disciples of Jesus, and Paul. But, God tells us to climb over such hills and obstacles. And to secure a new land.
In this case, twelve of the scouts were selected from each of the twelve tribes of the Israelites to explore the land of Canaan. After exploring the land for forty days, the scouts reported to Moses and the whole community. The report went like this:
27This was their report to Moses: “We arrived in the land you sent us to see, and it is indeed a magnificent country—a land flowing with milk and honey. Here is some of its fruit as proof. 28But the people living there are powerful, and their cities and towns are fortified and very large. We also saw the descendants of Anak who are living there! 29The Amalekites live in the Negev, and the Hittites, Jebusites, and Amorites live in the hill country. The Canaanites live along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea and along the Jordan Valley.” (Numbers 13:27-29)
But Caleb of Judah tribe tried to encourage the people saying, “Let’s go at once to take the land,” he said. “We can certainly conquer it!” (Verse 30)
31But the other men who had explored the land with him answered, “We can’t go up against them! They are stronger than we are!” 32So they spread discouraging reports about the land among the Israelites: “The land we explored will swallow up any who go to live there. All the people we saw were huge. 33We even saw giants there, the descendants of Anak. We felt like grasshoppers next to them, and that’s what we looked like to them!” (Verses 31-33)
Listening to these, the Israelite people began weeping aloud, and cried all night. They complained to Moses:
2Their voices rose in a great chorus of complaint against Moses and Aaron. “We wish we had died in Egypt, or even here in the wilderness!” they wailed. 3“Why is the LORD taking us to this country only to have us die in battle? Our wives and little ones will be carried off as slaves! Let’s get out of here and return to Egypt!”(Numbers 14:2-3) 4Then they plotted among themselves, “Let’s choose a leader and go back to Egypt!”(Verse 4)
Listening to the report from these 10 scouts, they were terrified, and wanted to go back to Egypt, to the old life style. But returning to Egypt meant going back to a slave status. When we face hardship, we reminisce about old days, saying, “we were happy then.” But, the reality might be not all good. But, we wail and say those days were better. I am sure you do the same sometime.
Please remember that it is not only flu that is contagious. Fear and muttering can spread from people to people also. We have vaccination against flu. But, how can we stop the spread of “muttering and fear”? Whether or not they are true, we are so easily infected by such things. To these people who were infected by the fear, and revealed their unfaithful nature, God said:
33And your children will be like shepherds, wandering in the wilderness forty years. In this way, they will pay for your faithlessness, until the last of you lies dead in the wilderness. 34“‘Because the men who explored the land were there for forty days, you must wander in the wilderness for forty years—a year for each day, suffering the consequences of your sins. You will discover what it is like to have me for an enemy.’ 35I, the LORD, have spoken! I will do these things to every member of the community who has conspired against me. They will all die here in this wilderness!” 36Then the ten scouts who had incited the rebellion against the LORD by spreading discouraging reports about the land 37were struck dead with a plague before the LORD. 38Of the twelve who had explored the land, only Joshua and Caleb remained alive.
According to the book of Numbers, the Israelites did not stop complaining even after that (Numbers 16:3,11,…) This continued on and on. It is sad, but that is the human nature. So, what kind of life did these Israelite people invite as the consequence? Chapter 33 of the Numbers says that Israelites took up tents and moved, and set up tents, and moved on, and set up tents again. This appeared to be a journey to nowhere. They did not know where they were going. They did not accomplish anything, and there was no joy.
When people lose faith and doubt God’s promise, even if order is imposed on the people, their life was empty. About such state, Hebrews Chapter 3 Verses 12-19 provides us with encouraging words:
12Be careful then, dear brothers and sisters. Make sure that your own hearts are not evil and unbelieving, turning you away from the living God.
13You must warn each other every day, as long as it is called “today,” so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God. 14For if we are faithful to the end, trusting God just as firmly as when we first believed, we will share in all that belongs to Christ. 15But never forget the warning: “Today you must listen to his voice. Don’t harden your hearts against him as Israel did when they rebelled.” 16And who were those people who rebelled against God, even though they heard his voice? Weren’t they the ones Moses led out of Egypt? 17And who made God angry for forty years? Wasn’t it the people who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? 18And to whom was God speaking when he vowed that they would never enter his place of rest? He was speaking to those who disobeyed him. 19So we see that they were not allowed to enter his rest because of their unbelief.
What we have learned here is that we must not succumb to unfaithfulness and complaining in our journey of life. We are given only one life to live. We should not ruin it. We should encourage each other to live “today” faithfully.
Let’s turn to the third point. It is hope in tribulation.
Hope in tribulation
So, these Israelite people had to wander through the wilderness for 40 years because of their unfaithfulness, and most of them died before they could reach the Promised Land. But, God did not abandon these people completely. God revealed hope to these people in the wilderness. This hope came in an unexpected form. Let’s read the Numbers Chapter 21 Verses 4-9:
4Then the people of Israel set out from Mount Hor, taking the road to the Red Sea to go around the land of Edom. But the people grew impatient along the way, 5and they began to murmur against God and Moses. “Why have you brought us out of Egypt to die here in the wilderness?” they complained. “There is nothing to eat here and nothing to drink. And we hate this wretched manna!” 6So the LORD sent poisonous snakes among them, and many of them were bitten and died. 7Then the people came to Moses and cried out, “We have sinned by speaking against the LORD and against you. Pray that the LORD will take away the snakes.” So Moses prayed for the people. 8Then the LORD told him, “Make a replica of a poisonous snake and attach it to the top of a pole. Those who are bitten will live if they simply look at it!” 9So Moses made a snake out of bronze and attached it to the top of a pole. Whenever those who were bitten looked at the bronze snake, they recovered!
When the people murmured, God sent snakes, and the snakes bit the people. These people were in the wilderness. So, these snakes could be like the rattling snakes we see in bushes around our hills. We have blood serum these days. If the people are treated immediately with serum, there is no threat to life. But, people could die without such treatment.
So, Moses prayed to God to intervene for the people. God answered and told them to make a replica of a snake, attach it to the top of a pole, and to look up to the snake. Those who looked up at the snake were saved. This form of hope takes on another form in John Chapter 3 Verse 14 and on, in the form of words of Jesus:
14And as Moses lifted up the bronze snake on a pole in the wilderness, so I, the Son of Man, must be lifted up on a pole, 15so that everyone who believes in me will have eternal life. 16“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 17God did not send his Son into the world to condemn it, but to save it. (John 3:14-17)
Our common sense tells us that we cannot be cured just by looking up at a snake. So, we do not do so. If we do look up to the snake, it is our faith that makes us do so. We believe and look up. The same can be said about the cross of Jesus. If we look up to Jesus on the cross, we would not perish but are granted an eternal life. That is what the Bible promises us. Prophet Isaiah says: 22Let all the world look to me for salvation! For I am God; there is no other. (Isaiah 45:22)
Our life now is like the life in the wilderness the Israelites had experienced. God prepares us so that at any given moment we can take up and carry out what God commands us to do. Preachers are not called by God to preach if they are not prepared. Those who serve God are not called if they are not prepared. Businessmen are not called by God if they are not prepared. These people prepare themselves all the time with faith so that they can offer their best.
We might make mistakes during our long journey. We might lose sight of our faith and end up meandering, wasting away days. But, in those days, we should look up to the Lord in faith. God pitied the Israelite people when they wandered away from God. And this was a precursor to the Jesus Christ to come. God loved us indeed so much that he gave us his only begotten son.
David wrote: ”Come, let us tell of the LORD’S greatness; let us exalt his name together. “ (Psalm 34:3) We look up to this God with faith. Psalm 66, verse 12 says: “We went through fire and flood. But you brought us to a place of great abundance.”
Even if we are to go through fire and water because of our unfaithfulness, God will bring us to a place of great abundance if we look up to God.Let us pray.

５）上記の１０人の報告を受けたイスラエルの民は不信仰に支配され、恐れ、そしてつぶやきました。その恐れとつぶやきは人から人へと感染していったように見受けられます。あなたはこのような感染を目撃したことがありますか。どうしたらこのような感染から免れることができるでしょうか。
６）上記のことによりイスラエルの民は４０年もの間、荒野をさまようことになりました。私達は自分でまいたものを刈り取らなければなりません。彼らが刈り取らなければならない生活はどんなものとなったでしょうか。民数記３３章を読んでみましょう。
７）民数記２１章４節－９節を読みましょう。蛇にかまれた者たちが、掲げられた蛇を仰ぐことによって命が救われたということは何の型となっていますか。仰ぐということに常にともなうものはなにでしょうか。
