フリーウエイに幾つも車線が引かれていますように、私達の人生の旅路にも線が引かれていると聖書は言います。その線の中を生きるなら私達は安全ですが、その線を超えていく時に私達は問題を抱えます。誘惑というのは「その線を超えてこちらに来なさいよ」という囁きです。言うまでもなく、その線が最初からないのなら、私達は簡単に道を外れていくことでしょう。今日、自由の名のもとに、こんな線なんていりませんよという方向に私達は向かっています。
たとえ私達の道に線が引かれていたとしても、時にそれは自分が引いた線です。私達がこの線を引く時には「自己中心」というブラシを用いますので、その線は「これで大丈夫か」というようなものとなります。昨日引かれていたものが今日は消されてしまっていたり、別の線がそこに加えられたりと、それはいつも様変わりするのです。昨日は悪い事とされていたことが、今日は正しいとされたりするのです。また何せ「自己中心」というブラシですから、その車線も強引です。人のことはお構いなしに引かれる線もあります。
私達に必要な「一線」は古の昔から多くの人達を守ってきたという実績が伴うものであるべきです。それは、今もくすむことなく、はっきりと私達に見えるものでなければなりません。昨日も今日も変わらないものでなければなりません。しかし、それにしてもどこにそんな車線があるのでしょうか。それはこの「聖書」の中にあるのです。今日、お話しました詩篇１篇にしても、箴言やヤコブ書の言葉にしろ、それは全て聖書の中に書かれているものです。その言葉の内に留まるということは、私達の人生の旅路に引かれている車線の内にとどまるということです。

誘惑を乗り越える
箴言５章１節‐２３節
２０１４年２月１６日
1わが子よ、わたしの知恵に心をとめ、わたしの悟りに耳をかたむけよ。2これは、あなたが慎みを守り、あなたのくちびるに知識を保つためである。3遊女のくちびるは蜜をしたたらせ、その言葉は油よりもなめらかである。4しかしついには、彼女はにがよもぎのように苦く、もろ刃のつるぎのように鋭くなる。5その足は死に下り、その歩みは陰府の道におもむく。6彼女はいのちの道に心をとめず、その道は人を迷わすが、彼女はそれを知らない（箴言５章１節－６節）
この箇所には蜜をしたたらす、油よりもなめらかな誘（いざな）いが書かれています。その内容は遊女の誘惑に関するのでありますが、広げて考えれば、それだけではなく私達が日常的に直面する色々な誘惑にあてはめることができますでしょう。すなわちここに書かれているような異性のこと、金銭的なこと、地位・名誉に関わること、不法薬物への誘い・・・挙げればきりがありません。あのイエス様ですら公生涯にお入りになる前に荒野で誘惑を受けました。私達の人生の歩みには、時にこのような誘いがあります。誘いとは私達の心を惹きつけるもので、なぜ私達が惹きつけられるかといいますと、この箴言にも書かれていますように、それは蜜のように甘く、その誘いの言葉は油よりもなめらかだからです。ある人はその誘いをはねのけますが、ある人はその誘いに近づき、やがてのめり込んでいきます。
この誘惑についてヤコブは書いています。『13だれでも誘惑に会う場合、「この誘惑は、神からきたものだ」と言ってはならない。神は悪の誘惑に陥るような方ではなく、また自ら進んで人を誘惑することもなさらない。14人が誘惑に陥るのは、それぞれ、欲に引かれ、さそわれるからである。15欲がはらんで罪を生み、罪が熟して死を生み出す。16愛する兄弟たちよ。思い違いをしてはいけない』（ヤコブ１章１２節－１６節）。
このところにはっきりと書いていることは、誘惑は神から来たものではないということです。神は私達を誘惑するような方ではなく、なぜ私達が誘惑に陥るかと言いますと、私達が欲に引かれ、誘われ、実際にそれに近づき、それに触れ、後戻りできなくなるからで、それは私達自身が引き起こしている問題なのだというのです。どうかこのことで思い違いをして神に責任を転嫁するような愚かなことはしないようにとヤコブはいうのです。このことはソロモンも同じことを言っています。
20わが子よ、どうして遊女に迷い、みだらな女の胸をいだくのか。21人の道は主の目の前にあり、主はすべて、その行いを見守られる。22悪しき者は自分のとがに捕えられ、自分の罪のなわにつながれる。23彼は、教訓がないために死に、その愚かさの大きいことによって滅びる（箴言５章２０節－２３節）
誘惑に陥るか否か、それは私達が自分の罪に捕えられ、その縄につながれてしまうからだとソロモンも言うのです。それにしても、そもそも私達は「まさか自分が誘惑に陥ることなどはない」と思っています。でもそう思っていた無数の人達がこれまでに、その誘惑に陥ってきました。それが誘惑というものです。その誘惑が何であっても、それに陥ってしまった方達に話を聞けば「まさか自分がこんなことをしてしまうなんて」と答えることでしょう。周りの人に聞いても「まさかあの人が」という言葉を私達は聞くことでしょう。
誘惑は私達の周りにいくらでもあり、今も甘い囁きと共に私達に忍び寄ります。そして、私達がそれに陥ることがないという保障はどこにもないのです。そこで、今日はまず最初に「誘惑から守られるために」ということをお話しましょう。
誘惑から守られるために先のヤコブの手紙にはこんな言葉がありました。『欲がはらんで罪を生み、罪が熟して死を生み出す』（ヤコブ１章１６節）。
ヤコブが「はらみ、熟し、死を生み出す」と書いていることは私達に多くの示唆を与えます。それは私達が誘惑に陥っていくのにはプロセスがあるのだということを示しています。「はらむ」と言いますと、まず妊娠ということを私達は思い起こします。子供が胎に宿りますと、その子は日毎に成長し、時が来れば出産します。私達の誘惑も同じだとヤコブはいいます。それは最初は目立たず、小さなものです。しかし、徐々にそれは大きくなり、時が来れば熟し、それが死にいたるというのです。
私はブログというものを書いています。ブログとはインターネット上に自分の日々感じていることを書く、公開されている日記のようなものです。数年前、それを見たという日本のある会社からそのブログを有料にしてみませんかという連絡がありました。調べるとその会社はその手のビジネスではよく知られた会社で、特に悪質な会社ではないということが分かりました。ただあちらはビジネスとしての話をもってきたのです。担当者は言いました。「海外で生活している日本人として、大倉さんが伝えようとしていることをもっと広く伝えるためにいかがですか。私達の顧客にはこんな有名人がいて、この人達は今、ブログを書いて収益を得ています」。この話はとても興味深く、新鮮に聞こえましたが、一歩間違えると誘惑になりかねないものでした。
葛藤がありました。今のインターネットの時代にこのような伝道の方法もあるのかなと。その方はこう説明してくれました。「これだけあらゆる情報が溢れている時代、もはや多くの人は無料の情報に信頼を寄せなくなっています。代価を払ってでも、安心、かつ確実な情報を得る時代なのです」というような、まことしやかな言葉も心に残りました。
しかし、結論から言いますと、この一件は、お断りました（誤解してはいけないことは、この会社が悪いのではなく、その会社は合法的なビジネスをしているということであり、しかし、私にはそれが誘惑になりうるものということでした）。
さいわいだったのは、執事の皆さんに相談させていただいたことです。このようなことを秘密にし、こそこそと自分で対処しようとしますと、まさしく知らないうちに欲がはらんで、熟すということを聖霊様が守ってくださったのでしょう。色々な方達の知恵を聞くことにより、この話はお断りすることにしました。そして、今、そうしてよかったなと思います。
イエス様はかつてこう言われました。『20悪を行っている者はみな光を憎む。そして、そのおこないが明るみに出されるのを恐れて、光にこようとはしない。21しかし、真理を行っている者は光に来る。その人のおこないの、神にあってなされたということが、明らかにされるためである』（ヨハネ３章２０節－２１節）。
私達は町中に街灯があることを歓迎します。この教会も努めて夜は明りで照らしています。暗い夜に明りがあることは私達にとって色々なメリットがあり、その一つは防犯に大きな効力があるからです。人は見えなければ悪いことをします。しかし、そこが回りから見えるのであるのなら、悪さができません。街灯をつけることにより、何か盗みをはたらこうとする人の誘惑を防ぐことができます。同じように誘惑から私達を守る一つの対処法は、そのことを隠すような場面を作らない。秘密をつくらないことです。秘密ができると、嘘が生まれ、その嘘を隠そうと別の嘘が生まれます。ですから、いつも光のもとに私達を置くことです。
この箴言には「あなたの道を彼女から遠く離し、その家の門に近づいてはならない」（８）とも書かれています。そもそも、その誘惑には近づかない。近づくというところに既に心の中で誘われている私達がいるのです。あの詩篇１篇にありますでしょう。
『1悪しき者のはかりごとに歩まず、罪びとの道に立たず、あざける者の座にすわらぬ人はさいわいである。2このような人は主のおきてをよろこび、昼も夜もそのおきてを思う』（詩篇１篇１節）。
歩まず、立たず、座らない。歩んだら、やがて立ち止まる、立っているのもなんだから、座り始める。そうすると、もう立ち上がれなくなります。私達はこのようにして、誘惑をはらんでいき、最後にそれは熟すのです。
私達の手をストーブの上に置くとどうなるのでしょうか。言うまでもない、火傷します。その時間が長ければ長いほど、火傷はひどくなります。私達の身体に痛みの感覚があることは、神様の私達に対する念入りな配慮があります。ストーブに５秒、手を置いて「熱い」という方はいません。置いた瞬間、「熱い！」と私達は手をはなすのです。その感覚が警告となり、私達はストーブから遠ざかります。
フリーウエイを運転していて、よそ見をしていたり、フッと居眠りをして、路肩にはみでると、ガタガタという大きな音と振動がします。そのような道の作りになっているからです。私達はドキッとし、それで目が覚めます。道と路肩の境には特別なでこぼこが入れてあって、その上をタイヤが走ると音と振動が起こるようになっているのです。そして、それが警告となって私達は大きな事故から免れるのです。
私達が誘惑に合う時に、時にこのような警告が何度か与えられます。その数は誘惑から免れることができるチャンスの数です。その時に、引き返すことができるのならさいわいです。その警告をしてくれる人や出来事が私達を救うのです。
私達がなすことには必ず結果がともないます。この誘惑の行き着く先について箴言は記しています。9おそらくはあなたの誉を他人にわたし、あなたの年を無慈悲な者にわたすに至る。10おそらくは他人があなたの資産によって満たされ、あなたの労苦は他人の家に行く。11そしてあなたの終りが来て、あなたの身と、からだが滅びるとき、泣き悲しんで、12言うであろう、「わたしは教訓をいとい、心に戒めを軽んじ、13教師の声に聞き従わず、わたしを教える者に耳を傾けず、14集まりの中、会衆のうちにあって、わたしは、破滅に陥りかけた」と（箴言５章９節－１４節）
その結果は「あなたの誉、資産、そしてこれまでの労苦が全て他人のものとなり、いよいよ私達が死を迎える時に、わたしは聞いていた教訓に従わず、それを軽んじていたために破滅に陥ったのだ」と言うだろうというのです。それでもある人は言うでしょう。「ばれなきゃいいでしょう」。しかし、イエス様は言います。隠れていることで、あらわにされないものはない。たとえ人の目をごまかせても、神様の目をごまかすことはできない。
今、話題になっている作曲家がいます。１８年間、彼は自らを欺き、人を欺いてきました。しかし、それを欺きとおすことはできませんでした。実にイエス様が言われたとおりです。17隠されているもので、あらわにならないものはなく、秘密にされているもので、ついには知られ、明るみに出されないものはない。（ルカ８章１６節－１８節）。
どうか主が私達を守ってくださいますように。私達が光のもとを歩むことができますように。同時に私達が歩まず、立たず、座らずを全うすることができますように。誘惑をはらますことがないように、そのために秘密をもつことがないように。やがてすべての事は明るみになるのですから。最後に「主の道を歩み楽しむ」ということをお話しましょう。
主の道を歩む楽しみ
ソロモンは今日、見ております箴言５章に続けてこう書きました。
15あなたは自分の水ためから水を飲み、自分の井戸から、わき出す水を飲むがよい。16あなたの泉を、外にまきちらし、水の流れを、ちまたに流してよかろうか。17それを自分だけのものとし、他人を共にあずからせてはならない。18あなたの泉に祝福を受けさせ、あなたの若い時の妻を楽しめ。19彼女は愛らしい雌じか、美しいしかのようだ。いつも、その乳ぶさをもって満足し、その愛をもって常に喜べ（箴言５章１５節－１９節）。
これまで私達が受ける誘惑についてお話してきました。この誘惑に対して、この箇所は、遊女や人妻に自らの身をゆだねるのではなく、あなたの妻を愛し、あなたの妻との生活を楽しめと書かれています。ここから分かることは、あなたがその誘惑を受けるよりも、あなたには既に与えらているものがあるではないかということです。
時に私達が誘惑に心惹かれる時、私達はこのことを忘れてしまいます。それは何か。それは「既に私達に与えられているもの」です。それを忘れて、私達は誘いに惹かれていきます。巷でスキャンダルにさらされている人達は、それが異性であれ、金銭的なことであれ、そのスキャンダルの対象となっているものを持っていないから誘惑に陥ったかといいますと大抵はそうではありません。既に十分に与えられているにもかかわらず、持っているにもかかわらず、彼らは誘いに惹かれていくのです。ダビデが部下の妻、バテシバと姦淫の罪を犯した時、その罪を隠すために嘘をつき、殺人を犯した時、それを指摘してナタンはあの有名な譬を話したではありませんか。
1「ある町にふたりの人があって、ひとりは富み、ひとりは貧しかった。2富んでいる人は非常に多くの羊と牛を持っていたが、3貧しい人は自分が買った一頭の小さい雌の小羊のほかは何も持っていなかった。彼がそれを育てたので、その小羊は彼および彼の子供たちと共に成長し、彼の食物を食べ、彼のわんから飲み、彼のふところで寝て、彼にとっては娘のようであった。4時に、ひとりの旅びとが、その富んでいる人のもとにきたが、自分の羊または牛のうちから一頭を取って、自分の所にきた旅びとのために調理することを惜しみ、その貧しい人の小羊を取って、これを自分の所にきた人のために調理した」（Ⅱサムエル１２章１節－４節）。
言うまでもない、富んでいる人はダビデで、貧しいのは彼の忠臣な部下、バテシバの夫、ウリヤです。娘のように可愛がられていた小羊とはウリヤの妻、バテシバです。非常に多くの羊と牛を持っていたダビデはウリヤにとって唯一の愛する小羊、バテシバを奪いました。すなわち既に神様はダビデに彼が楽しむべき、喜ぶべきものは与えておられました。しかし、誘いの力は彼にその一線を超えさせたのです。
既に与えられているものを考える。神様の与えてくださっている恵みを数えてみる。そして、その与えられているものに感謝し、それを喜び、それを楽しむ。同時に主がこれから与えてくださるであろうことにも思いを寄せる。それは自分が一線を超えてまでして手に入れるものよりもさらに素晴らしいものであるということを私達は待ち望み、信じようではありませんか。
36神の御旨を行って約束のものを受けるため、あなたがたに必要なのは、忍耐である。37「もうしばらくすれば、きたるべきかたがお見えになる。遅くなることはない。38が義人は、信仰によって生きる。もし信仰を捨てるなら、わたしのたましいはこれを喜ばない」。39しかしわたしたちは、信仰を捨てて滅びる者ではなく、信仰に立って、いのちを得る者である（へブル１０章３６節－３９節）。信仰を捨てて滅びにいたるのではなく、信仰に立って、いのちを得ようではありませんか。
よくお話します。私達の多くは今朝、車にのって教会に来ました。よほど近所の人でない限り、フリーウエイを使ってここに来たことでしょう。ここに来るにあたり、おそらくそんなこと考えたことはないと思いますが、ここにいたるために、フリーウエイにあるものがなければ私達はここに着くことができなかったと思います。それは何でしょうか。
色々、考えられます。「車がなければこれません」と思われる方がいるかもしれません。その答えは申し分ありません。ある方は「道路標識」と思われるかもしれません。それも大切です。色々なことが考えられますが、その中に車と車がはしる境界線となる車線というものがあります。サンデイェゴのような都市になりますとこのフリーウエイは少なくとも片側３車線、時には５車線にも６車線にもなります。もし、それらの車線が引かれていなくて、ただ広い道がどかんとあって、そこを自由に運転しなさいということだとどうですか。
多くの人は答えます。「怖いですね」「必ず事故を犯しますね」。その通りです。私達はあの車線によって守られているのです。その車線の中を運転することによって私達は守られているのです。
私達の人生はオープンカーに乗ってこの道をはしっているようなものです。時には一人、時には同乗者もあり、日差しの温かさや、風の心地よさ、冷たさを私達は経験することでしょう。時には土砂降りの雨や車の故障により、先に進めないなんてこともあるでしょう。ある車のスピードは早く、ある車はゆっくりとしかはしれないかもしれません。
このドライブにおいて肝心なことが二つあります。一つ、それは私達がはしっている道がどこに行きつくのかということです。エレミヤは主の言葉を受けてこう言いました。『主はこう仰せられる、見よ、わたしは命の道と死の道とをあなたがたの前に置く』（エレミヤ２１章８節）。その道は命につながるのか、死につながるのか。私の道はどこに続いているのか、このようなことは私達が今していることを中断してでも、まず最初に取り組んで明らかにしておくべきことです。
二つ目のこと、それはその道が命にいたるために、その道中、事故を犯さないことです。事故を心待ちにして車を運転している人はいないでしょう。どうしたら事故せずに安全に運転することができるか、私達はそう願うことでしょう。時に事故は自分を害するのみならず、誰かを巻き込んでしまうことが多々あります。そのようなことを願う人はいません。ですから、そうならないために私達は車線の内側をはしるのです。この線は超えてはならないというものをしっかりと決めることです。

とどまることは自由を失うことではなく、とどまることにより私達は真理を知り、本当の自由を得るとイエス様は私達に約束されました。私達がすべき運転は一線を超えることなく、それゆえに神様が明らかにしてくださる真理に驚き、喜び、自由にハンドルを握ることです。そして、こうすることによってはじめて私達はこの人生のドライブを楽しむことができるのです。主がくださる真理の目をもって、この先の風景を見ると言うこと、これは私達にとって格別な楽しみとなることでしょう。お祈りしましょう。
Overcoming temptations
Proverbs 5:1-23

My son, pay attention to my wisdom, turn your ear to my words of insight, 2 that you may maintain discretion and your lips may preserve knowledge. 3 For the lips of the adulterous woman drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil; 4 but in the end she is bitter as gall, sharp as a double-edged sword. 5 Her feet go down to death; her steps lead straight to the grave. 6 She gives no thought to the way of life; her paths wander aimlessly, but she does not know it. (Proverbs 5:1-6)
This section talks about temptations that drip honey and are smoother than oil. This particular section talks about temptation from an adulterous woman. But, temptations we face in our daily life are not limited to that. Such temptations could be sex, financial arrangement, job-offer, illegal drugs, and is all over the map. Even Jesus himself was subjected to temptation in the wilderness. We encounter various temptations in our life, too. Temptations tempt our heart because, as is written here, such temptations are sweet as honey and are wrapped in words that are smoother than oil. Some of us can reject such temptations, while some others succumb to temptations.
James wrote about temptations in this way: “When tempted, no one should say, ‘God is tempting me.’ For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. 16 Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. ” (James 1:13-16)
James stated clearly that temptations do not come from God. God does not tempt anyone. We succumb to temptation because of our desires. When we give in to such temptations and we cannot get out of them, this is because of our doing and not God’s. James warned us not to blame God for our wrongdoings. Solomon agreed and said:
Why, my son, be intoxicated with another man’s wife? Why embrace the bosom of a wayward woman? 21 For your ways are in full view of the Lord, and he examines all your paths. 22 The evil deeds of the wicked ensnare them; the cords of their sins hold them fast. 23 For lack of discipline they will die, led astray by their own great folly. (Proverbs 5:20-23)
Solomon says that we succumb to temptation when we are ensnared in our sins and we are held down by the cords of our sins. We feel that we can ward off any temptations. But, the reality is, many of us do succumb to temptations. That is the nature of temptation. When people succumb to temptation, they usually say: “I did not imagine I would fall for such temptation that easily.” People around the person would also say, “I did not expect him to be so tempted.”
Temptations are all around us, and they sneak up to us with sweet words. There is no guarantee that we do not succumb to temptations. Today, let me talk first about how we can be protected from temptations.
How to be protected from temptations
That letter from James said the following: “Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.” (James 1:15)
James said that “it is conceived, grows fully, and gives birth to death.” This tells us that there is a process through which we succumb to temptations. It said desire is conceived first. This is similar to becoming pregnant with a baby. When am embryo is created, that fetus grows day by day, and eventually a baby is born. James says our temptation is the same. At first, it is so tiny and not even noticeable. But, it grows gradually until it is fully grown. Then it gives birth to death.
I maintain a blog site on the internet. Blog is a type of dairy that one posts on the internet. Anyone can access and read my blog. A few years ago, one company in Japan contacted me and inquired me if I wanted turn that blog into a business venture. I checked about that company and found out that it was a good and well-known company in that industry. They asked if I wanted to make a business out of my blog. They said: “Why don’t you expand your audience base? Many people would be interested in voice of a Japanese minister living abroad. There are many other famous customers who are benefitting financially from such venture.” This was an interesting offer. It sounded tempting. But, I also sensed some danger in this.
I thought about this very carefully. This could create a fresh and new way of ministry through the internet. That company representative also told me: “There is overabundance of information. People became skeptical of free information. These days, people are willing to pay for safe and sound information.” This sounded convincing, too.
Eventually, I decided to decline their offer. (I am not saying that the company is illegitimate. This company is upright and offering sound service to the society. But, I was afraid this could potentially be bad for me.)
I am grateful that I could consult the members of our deacons. I did not want to proceed secretly with this matter. The Holy Spirit told me that such desire could grow too big before too long and would get out of my hands. After listening to advices of many people, I decided to decline the offer. And I feel I made the right decision.
Jesus once said: 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God. (John 3:20-21)
Street lights are welcome addition to cities. Our church leaves lights on during the night time. Lights at night are beneficial and can help prevent crimes. People are tempted to commit crime in the darkness. But, if the scene is well-lighted it is harder to do so. Street lights can serve to prevent people from criminal temptations. Similarly, one way to prevent us from temptations is to avoid putting ourselves in dark corners and to avoid secrecy. Secrecy might give birth to a lie, which needs other lies to cover it up. It is important that we place ourselves under a light.
This Proverbs says: “Keep to a path far from her, do not go near the door of her house.” (Proverbs 5:8) This tells us to stay away from temptations. Do not be tempted to get near them. Psalm 1 says: 1 Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, 2 but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. (Psalms 1:1-2)
Do not walk or stand or sit with the wicked. When we walk with the wicked, we would eventually stop, and then sit with them. Then it would be very hard to stand up again. The temptations are conceived in such a way and will give birth to death.
What happens when we place our hand on a hot stove? We burn ourselves. The burn would be severe if the hand is on the stove for a longer time. We are equipped with sense of pain. God was considerate to provide us with this sense. It does not take 5 seconds to sense the heat. We sense the heat the very moment we touch the stove and we recoil. This sensing provides us warning, and we get away from the stove.
On a freeway, when we are distracted or sleepy and stray away to the shoulders, we are jolted with loud noise and shaking sensation. The roads are designed to provide warning. We are jolted to senses immediately. Irregular surface structure between the road and shoulders are designed to exert loud noise and shaking sensation. This provides warning and prevents us from serious accidents.
When we encounter temptations, we are given such warnings. Warnings provide us chance to protect us from temptations. If we can heed such warnings, we are blessed. Warnings from system and people can save us.
Our actions always produce consequences. The book of Proverbs tells.
9 lest you lose your honor to others and your dignity to one who is cruel, 10 lest strangers feast on your wealth and your toil enrich the house of another. 11 At the end of your life you will groan, when your flesh and body are spent. 12 You will say, “How I hated discipline! How my heart spurned correction! 13 I would not obey my teachers or turn my ear to my instructors. 14 And I was soon in serious trouble in the assembly of God’s people.” (Proverbs 5:9-14)
When we do not listen to warnings, we would lose our honor and our toil to others. And when we face end of our life, we regret that we should have listened to and honored discipline. Some might say it is OK as long as others do not notice. But, Jesus says hidden things are revealed eventually. We may deceive people, but we cannot deceive eyes of God.
There is a music composer in Japan in the news. Although he did not compose some of the popular music, he claimed he did. He managed to deceive people for 18 years. But, he could not keep his secret any more. This is exactly what Jesus told us: 17 For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open. (Luke 8:17)
May God protect us. May we walk under the light all the time. Let us not walk, stand, or sit with the evil. Prevent us from conceiving temptation and holding on to secrets. For everything will be revealed eventually.
Finally, let me talk about “Enjoy walking with the Lord.”
Enjoy walking with the Lord
Solomon says in Chapter 5 of the Proverbs:
15 Drink water from your own cistern, running water from your own well. 16 Should your springs overflow in the streets, your streams of water in the public squares? 17 Let them be yours alone, never to be shared with strangers. 18 May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth. 19 A loving doe, a graceful deer—may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be intoxicated with her love. (Proverbs 5:15-19)
Up to this point, I talked about temptations we face. In contrast, this section says rather than giving in to prostitutes and neighbor’s wife, we should love our own wife and enjoy life with her. This points out that rather than succumbing to outside temptation, we should realize and cherish what we already have.
When we are tempted, we forget about what we already have. We must remember that we are blessed already. When we forget that, we seek temptation from outside. Those people exposed to scandalous events are not necessarily people who are not already blessed with opposite sex, with money, and other wealth. They are not tempted because they lack these things. They are tempted even though they already are blessed with these things. When David committed adultery with Bathsheba, wife of his subordinate, David lied and even murdered. Nathan tried to point out his sins, by telling a parable:
“There were two men in a certain town, one rich and the other poor. 2 The rich man had a very large number of sheep and cattle, 3 but the poor man had nothing except one little ewe lamb he had bought. He raised it, and it grew up with him and his children. It shared his food, drank from his cup and even slept in his arms. It was like a daughter to him. 4 Now a traveler came to the rich man, but the rich man refrained from taking one of his own sheep or cattle to prepare a meal for the traveler who had come to him. Instead, he took the ewe lamb that belonged to the poor man and prepared it for the one who had come to him.” (II Samuel 12:1-4)
It is very clear that the rich man was David, and the poor man was his subordinate Uriah, husband of Bathsheba. The little lamb which was loved like a daughter was Bathsheba, wife of Uriah. David had many sheep and cattle. But, he took away the only lamb of Uriah, Bathsheba. God had already provided David with wealth and material to enjoy and cherish. But, David could not resist the temptation.
We should acknowledge what we already have. We should count our blessings. And we should be grateful and joyous about them, and enjoy them. At the same time, think of many more things God is going to provide us. These are far more superior to whatever things that tempt us. We should believe that and wait for them.
36 You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. 37 For, “In just a little while, he who is coming will come and will not delay.” 38 And, “But my righteous one will live by faith. And I take no pleasure in the one who shrinks back.” 39 But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved. (Hebrews 10:36-39) We should not give up our faith for temptation. We should stand firmly on our faith and enjoy our life.
Most of us came this morning to this church by car. And most of us took advantage of freeways. Perhaps you have not realized. But there is something on the freeway without which we could not have reached this church safely. What do you think this something is?
It could be a car. Without a car we could not have come to this church. That could be a good answer. It could be road signs. They are important, too. There might be other answers. But, think of lines that mark and separate lanes on the freeways. In a big city like San Diego, freeways have at least 3 lanes going one way. Sometimes we have 5 or 6 lanes. Can you imagine what would happen if there is a wide open road with no lane markings and we are told to drive anyway we want?
Many of you would think that it would be very scary and dangerous. You also think for sure that accidents would happen. You are right. We are protected by these lane markings. We are protected when we drive between such lane markings.
Our life is like driving a convertible car along the road. Sometimes, we drive alone or with passengers. Sometimes, we experience warm sun, comfortable breeze, and cool wind. Some other times, we might encounter heavy rain, car might break down, and we cannot go on. Some cars run fast, while others run slowly.
There are two important points about driving.
One is that we must know where the road we are on would take us. Jeremiah said: “Furthermore, tell the people, ‘This is what the Lord says: See, I am setting before you the way of life and the way of death. (Jeremiah 21:8) We should ask: Does this road take us to life or to death? Where does the road take us? We must get answer to that question. We should do so now even if we have to interrupt what we are doing.
The second point is that we should not get into accident in order to reach the destination. No one wants to encounter an accident while driving. But, how can we drive safely without accidents? Accident could not only harm us but other people around us. No one wishes for an accident. That is why we try to stay between the lane markings while driving. We must recognize and know the lines which we should never cross over.
Temptations tell us to cross over that line. If we cannot even see such lines, we can succumb to temptations easily. I am afraid that under the name of freedom, our society seems to be trying to eliminate these important and valuable lane markings.
Some claim that they have clear lines. But these are often based on our human judgment. When we draw such lines, we use “self-centered” brush stroke. We are not too confident about such lines. We could wipe out the lines we drew yesterday, and draw another line today. These could change too easily. Things considered to be wrong yesterday could be declared to be correct today. Self-centered brush stroke is also inconsiderate and could upset other people around us.
The lines we need should be something that have been honored for a long time and have protected many people. Such lines should never fade, and should be clearly visible to us. They should not change from day to day. Where can we find such lines marking correct lanes? These are found in this Bible. All words I have touched upon today from Psalms, the Proverbs, and James are all taken from the Bible. To stay within these words means to stay within lane markings drawn in the path of our life journey. Jesus said:
“If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31-32)
To stay within these teachings does not mean losing our freedom. By holding on to these words, we will know the truth, and the truth will set us free. When we drive, we should not cross these guide lines. We should welcome and be amazed with the truth God reveals to us in these guide lines, and enjoy freedom of driving within the lines. We can truly enjoy the drive of our life only when we adhere to the lanes shown to us by God. If we do so, our drive would be more enjoyable since we can see the on-coming scenery with the eyes that God has blessed us with.
