今日、「クリスマス」と本来の呼び名をせずに「シーズンズ・グリーティング」と呼ぶ風潮がこの国に蔓延しています。その心はヘロデ王の心に結びついていきそうです。「イエス・キリスト、そんな存在が俺の人生に入ってきたら、俺は自由に生きられなくなるではないか」。とんでもない！そのことゆえに、私達は自由を失っているのです。
今日、人はフェイスブックで何人の友達がいて、その人達がどれだけ「いいね」を押してくれるのか、そんなことで自分がどれだけ価値あるのかと知ろうとしています。私達は既に知っているはずです。そんなはずはないだろうと！しかし、この私達の心はそのままピラトの心につながっていませんか。（本文より抜粋）

クリスマス、おめでとうございます。互いに挨拶を交わしあいましょう。今日という日を心から感謝しましょう。
今、私たちは喜んで挨拶を交し合いました。誰も暗い気もちで「メリークリスマス」と言われた方はいないと思います。私たちにとってクリスマスは喜びなのです。このことは私達にとりまして何の疑問もないことです。
しかし、イエスが誕生した時代、その誕生に対して、恐れと不安を感じている人達がいました。今日は、そのことを見ていきたいと思うのです。私達は先週、イエス様の誕生と十字架についてお話ししましたが、まさしく、今日のお話しもそうなのです。
なぜなら、イエス様の誕生はイコール、十字架への道のりの始まりであったからです。もし、私たちが始まりを知るならば、その最期も知らなければなりません。この二つにイエス・キリストの生涯が凝縮されているのです。
実はイエス・キリストの「誕生」と「死」には共通点があるのですが、皆さん、何だかお分かりでしょうか。それは、そのどちらにも権力ある人間が関わっていたということです。
イエス様誕生の時、ヘロデ王がこのイエスのことを聞き、幼子を殺そうとしました（『ヘロデが幼な子を捜し出して殺そうとしている』 マタイ２章１３節）。
イエス様が十字架にかかる時、総督ピラトはイエスの刑の判決に関わり、彼の最終的な判断によりイエス様は十字架に架けられました（『そこでピラトはバラバをゆるしてやり、イエスをむち打ったのち、十字架につけるために引き渡した』マタイ２７章２６節）。
ヘロデにもピラトにも絶大な権力がありました。それは普通の人達には与えられていないものでした。大抵のことは彼らの思うようになりました。目障りな者がいれば、彼らの手の中でその命を握りつぶすことができました。
イエスの誕生と死には、このような人間の権力が関わっていたのです。しかし、そんな力を持っているこの二人は片やイエスの誕生に対して、片やイエスの十字架に対して、その心が揺れ動いていたのです。
神の一人子が生まれる時に、ヘロデの心にあったものは何でしょうか。それは「不安」でした。彼は「ユダヤのベツレヘムにユダヤ人の王が生まれる」ということを聞き「不安」（マタイ２章３節）を感じたと聖書は記しています。
なぜ、私達は「不安」を感じる時があるのでしょうか。不安はいつもあるものと同居しているのをご存知ですか？それは「恐れ」です。私達は今朝、イエス様の誕生を喜んでいるのに、その誕生を恐れている人がいたのです。
しかし、あらためて考えてみましょう。ヘロデが恐れたのは、飼葉に寝かされている何の力もない幼子でした。どうしてそんな赤子を恐れる必要がありますか。クリブでスヤスヤと眠っている赤ちゃんを恐れる人がいようか。ベイビー用品を売っている店は恐ろしい所と言う人がいるだろうか。いいや、人は顔に笑みを浮かべながら幼子を覗き込み、小さな小さなベイビー用品を手にするものだ。
赤子イエスは当然、この時に一言もヘロデに何かを語っていません。しかし、彼はこの赤子が将来、自分の地位をおびやかすのではないかと思ったのです。言い方を変えればイエスがいると自分が願っていること、自分がしたいことが、このイエスによってできなくなるとイエスを恐れたのです。彼は自由を失うのではないかと恐れたのです。
私達はヘロデを非難するかもしれません。幼子を恐れるとは、なんと自分の地位に縛られた哀れな人間なのかと。
しかし、実はこのヘロデの心は私達と無関係ではないのです。彼の心は私達の罪の本質を明らかにしています。罪とは手錠がかけられるとか、自分には罪がないだろうと自己判断で決めるものではありません。
罪とは神と自分が関わるのなら、自分は思い通りに生きられなくなるのではないかと恐れ、神に近づかないことなのです。
ヘロデの恐れはまさしくそのことでした。彼は自分の思い通りに権力を振り回せなくなるかもしれないことを恐れたのです。しかし、皮肉なことに彼はその自分の権力を振り回すことにより、みじめな生涯を送った人となりました。
主にある皆さん、私は仕事柄、多くの方達の人生に関わることがあります。そんなことを続けていますと、本当にこのことがよく分かってきました。私達は自分の自由を失うと恐れ、神から離れることにより、実はますます自由を失っているということです。
そして、そのために、いたるところで「自由」の名のもとに、自分の思い通りに生きようとしてる人がいます。私達は「自由」が大好きですから！しかし、私は証言しなければなりません。その「自由」が実のところ、なんと私達をがんじがらめにして、私達を「不自由な人間」としていることかと・・・。
イエス・キリストはそのような不自由な生き方から私達を解放するために来られたのです。イエス様はかつて言われたではないですか。 『もしわたしの言葉のうちにとどまっておるなら、あなたがたは、ほんとうにわたしの弟子なのである。また真理を知るであろう。そして真理は、あなたがたに自由を得させるであろう』（ヨハネによる福音書８章３１節－３２節）
パウロはこのイエス・キリストについて言っているではありませんか。『自由を得させるために、キリストはわたしたちを解放してくださったのである。だから、堅く立って、二度と奴隷のくびきにつながれてはならない』（ガラテヤ５章１節）
今日はL君とRさんが洗礼を受けます。このような若者が主のもとに来ることはなんとさいわいでしょう。彼らの人生はこれからです。ある意味、まさしく彼らの前途は彼らの自由な采配のもとにあるのです。
クリスチャンになることにより、彼らの人生が今日から自由を失う日々となるのではありません。彼らは神の前に本当の意味でその一度限りの人生において、本当の自由を謳歌し、その人生を歩むのです。
神の一人子が十字架にかかるか否かという時に、総督ピラトの心にあったものは何だったのでしょうか。聖書によるとピラトは群衆を満足させようと思って、バラバをゆるしてやり、イエスをむち打ったのち、十字架につけるために引きわたした（マルコ１５章１５節）と思って、イエスを十字架へと引き渡しました。
その判決に対して最終的な力を持っていたピラトは、どこに真理があるのかということではなくて、群集とのバランスでイエスを見ていました。そこには彼の面子と保身がありました。
しかし、イエス様はその時、裸に近い状態でムチ打たれ、罵られ、唾をかけられ、そのどこにも保身も面子もありませんでした。神の子である彼が自らの身を守ることは簡単なことです。
イエス自身が言ったように「天の軍勢」を来させ、彼の身に何人も指一本触れさせないようにすることがイエスにはできました。そして、それらの天の軍勢に守られて地をおさめることにより、面子を保つことも簡単なことでした。しかし、それらの権威をこの時のイエスは何もお使いになりませんでした。
私達は人の顔色、人にどう思われているかを過剰に恐れます。言うなれば、私達は人を恐れるのです。そして、そこから私達の人生は不協和音を生じ始めます。
ピラトの前に立つイエスの肉体はぼろぼろでした。まさしく、イザヤが預言したように、そこに何の威厳もありませんでした。しかし、この時、ピラトとイエスは対照的でした。すなわち、そこには人を恐れないイエスがおり、ピラトは人の顔色をうかがっていたのです。
時に私達は人にどう思われているのかということの方が、イエス・キリストよりも大切なのです。人にどう思われているのかということに生きるのなら、私達は本当の意味で自分の人生を生き切ったとは言えないことでしょう。そして、それを私達は「私の生きた人生」と言うことができるのでしょうか。
主にある皆さん、ヘロデの生き方、ピラトの生き方には問題がありました。私達はそこから学ばなければなりません。私達も同じ轍（てつ）を踏まないためです。

飼い葉に寝かせるイエスは私達に恐怖を抱かせるような姿ではないのです。十字架にはりつけにされたイエスは文字通り、何も持たない傷ついたお方です。本来、このお方の前に立つ私達は何も恐れる必要はないし、人の目を気にすることはないのです。
私達はこのお方に近づきましょう。一度の人生、本当に畏れるべきものを恐れかしこみつつ、しかし、本来、全く恐れる必要のないもに人生の主導権を握らせることなく、本当の自由を得て、この人生を歩んでいこうではありませんか。
それがクリスマスのメッセージであり、イエスの生涯のメッセージなのです。

The Manger and The Cross

Merry Christmas! Let us thank God for this day, and for his son from the bottom of our hearts. Let’s greet each other!
We just celebrated and greeted each other with joy just now. I don’t think anyone said “Merry Christmas” with a gloomy and sad feeling. Christmas is joy for us. We have no doubt about this.
But when Jesus was born, there were people who were full of fear and anxiety about his birth. I would like to share about these people today.
I preached about Jesus’ birth and crucifixion last Sunday and today will also be the same.
The birth of Jesus is important because it is the starting point that lead to the cross. If we know His beginning, we should also know His last. The life of Jesus is largely characterized by these two things.
Jesus’ birth and death both share something in common. Do you know what is? The common factor is that these both events involved a person with authority.
When Jesus was born, King Herod tried to kill baby Jesus. (Matthew 2:13)
Governor-General Pilate was involved with, and ultimately made the judgment for Jesus’ crucifixion.
Both King Herod and Governor Pilate had power, a power that ordinary people are not given. They could end the life of people they did not like. They had the power to do most things as they wished.
The authority of both these men was involved with Jesus’ birth and death. However, both men, even with all their power, were restless. One because of Jesus’ birth, and one because of Jesus’ death.
When the son of God was born, what was in Herod’s heart? In the Japanese translated Bible, it says that he was anxious. Herod became anxious from hearing that the king of Jews would be born in Jerusalem.
Why do we feel anxiety? Most of the time, our anxiety is closely related to our fear. We are now rejoicing his birth, but there was a person who was afraid of his birth.
But think about this. What Herod was afraid of is the little baby boy who was sleeping in a manger. Of course, the baby did not have any power. Does King Herod need to be afraid of him? What kind of person fears a little baby sleeping in a crib? Are there people who are afraid of going to babies-are-us? No! We peek into the crib and look at the little baby with a smile.
As a baby, Jesus did not say anything to Herod. However, Herod believed that this baby would threaten his status in the future. In other words, Herod feared Jesus because he feared his power to do what he wants and wishes would be restricted by Jesus.
We might criticize Herod and think, what a pitiful man he was. To be so obsessed with his status that he feared a newborn child.
However, his heart is not completely unrelated to ours. His heart actually reveals our own sinful nature. Not being handcuffed does not equate to not having sin. Sin is not something we ourselves decide if we have or not.
Sin is to fear and think that if we are involved with God, we would not be able to live as we wish, and therefore avoid God.
The fear of Herod was just like this. He was afraid of possibly losing his authority, which he was using as he had wished. However, ironically, his life was made miserable because of his selfish use of authority.
I have had the opportunity to listen to and hear about many people’s lives. As I listen to these various stories, I have come to find one thing. When we fear to lose our freedom and walk away from God, we are actually losing true freedom by doing this.
There are people who define and pursue freedom by living the way they want. We love freedom! But I have to testify. In reality, the freedom that is defined by doing what we want actually ties us up and makes us less free.
Jesus Christ came to the earth to set us truly free. Jesus once said; 31 “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31-32)
Paul also mentioned about Jesus: It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery (Galatians 5:1).
Today, Luis and Reika will be baptized in this service. What a great joy for such young people to come to the Lord. Their life has just started, and their future is in their hands.
By becoming a Christian, they will not be losing their freedom from today. They are bringing their one life before God and will enjoy the true freedom that comes from God, as they walk their life.
When Jesus was crucified, What was in Governor Pilate’s mind? According to the Bible, “Pilate wanting to satisfy the crowd and handed Jesus over to be crucified (Mark 15:15)
Pilate who had final authority over Jesus’ future, instead of looking for truth, looked at the crowd. In his decision, he chose to save his face instead of choosing faith.
But Jesus in his crucifixion, was naked and beaten, abused, and spit on. He did not do anything to save his reputation or protect himself. It would have been easy for the son of God to protect himself.
Just like Jesus himself said before, he could have asked God to send an army down from heaven. He could have easily used his authority to save and protect himself, but he did not.
Sometimes we are afraid of what people think about us. We are in a way, afraid of people. And this is where the dissonant sound in our lives comes from.
The body of Jesus was completely beaten and worn. As the prophet Isaiah had prophesied, there was no dignity in him. The contrast between Pilate and Jesus here was that Jesus did not fear people, while Pilate was deeply afraid of how people perceived the situation.
Sometimes the thoughts of others are more important to us than Jesus Christ. If our lives are dictated by our fear of other’s perceptions, can we truly say that we have fully lived our own life? That I lived MY life?
Dear everyone, the lives of Herod and Pilate had a problem. We have to learn from them so that we do not walk over the same footprint.
The word “Christmas” captures everything about why we celebrate. However, our world today prefers to say, “season’s greetings” instead of “Merry Christmas”. Almost as to reflect Herod’s heart, people today think, “Jesus Christ? If I let him in my heart, I cannot live freely”. No!! That cannot be farther from the truth. We are losing our real freedom by denying him.
In our world, we want to affirm our value by the number of friends and likes we have on Facebook. We must already know inside, that this is not true. That our value is not determined by such a thing. But don’t you think this is the same heart which Pilate had?
The baby on the manger is not an image that instills fear. Jesus, who was crucified on the cross has nothing but scars. It isn’t necessary for us to feel fear in front of Jesus, or fear what people perceive.
Let us come near to Him. We have one life. We should fear what is truly worthy of awe, and loosen the control that unnecessary fear has over our lives. Let us obtain true freedom, and live our lives in that freedom.
This is the Christmas message and the message of His life. Let’s pray.
