日本のテレビでは夏になると夜のプライムタイムに「怪談」が取り上げられます。芸能人達が体験した怖い話を聞くことにより、ゾッと背筋が凍りつく、それで暑さをしのぐというようなことがあるようです。ですから冬にはそのような怪談は取り上げられません。寒い冬に追い討ちをかけるかのようにゾッとさせてくださいという人はいません。
テレビ局が一番、視聴者が多い時間帯に「怪談」をもってくるということ、そのような国は世界にあまりないのです。時に日本という国は表向きは仏教の国と言われつつも、実際は無宗教の国だといわれます。常日頃「宗教なんて」と言っている人達が、しかし、幽霊の話には耳を傾けるのです。言い方を変えれば無宗教と呼ばれながら、霊の話に大きな興味があるということです・・・。

日々、感謝する理由について

私は釣りが好きで時々、桟橋に行って糸を垂らします。釣りに興味のない人は釣り人が一日中、釣り糸を垂れている姿を滑稽に思うかもしれません。炎天下、一日、釣り糸を垂れながら何も釣れず、その日に使った餌代やら、交通費を使えば、夕飯の刺身ぐらい買えるのですから、普通に考えればなんとも理解しがたい人達です。釣れなかったお父さんが帰りに魚屋さんで魚を買って、あたかも自分の獲物かのような顔をして、自らの不甲斐ない一日をごまかそうとする光景は日本の漫画の中にも度々出てきます。
この釣りによって魚を釣るには最低限必要なものがあります。釣竿、釣り糸、オモリ、針、そして餌です。もっとも釣竿、オモリ、餌がなくとも釣りは可能ですが、さすがに釣り糸と針がなければ釣りはできません。それは釣りに不可欠なものです。
同じように私達が生きていくために不可欠なものがあります。それは何でしょうか。水、空気から始まり、食物・・・。もし私達がこれらを得ることができなければ私達は確実に命を失います。しかし、それでは、はたして水、空気、食物があればそれだけで人間は生きていけるのでしょうか。かつてパウロは自ら書き記しました手紙の中で、テサロニケの人々を気遣って人間がケアーすべき不可欠なこと、三つが守られるようにと、こう書き記しています。
「23 どうか、平和の神ご自身が、あなたがたを全くきよめて下さるように。また、あなたがたの霊と心とからだとを完全に守って、わたしたちの主イエス・キリストの来臨のときに、責められるところのない者にして下さるように」（テサロニケ人への第一の手紙５章２３節）
パウロはここであなたの体が守られるようにと言っていますと同時に、霊と心も守られるようにと言っています。なぜなら、これらは人間にとって不可欠なものであるからです。
通常、私達は礼拝メッセージ・シリーズにそくして、旧約聖書から聖書の言葉を見ていますが、今日はサンクスギビング礼拝ですので詩篇２３篇からお話します。私達がよく知っているダビデの歌です。なぜ、詩篇２３篇なのかと言いますと、このシンプルな歌の中に今、お話しました「霊」と「心」と「肉体」の必要を神様は私達に与えられるという、とっておきのことが書かれているからです。このことを私達は知り、確認することによって、２０１２年のサンクスギビングを主に感謝する時としましょう。まず最初に主は私達の日ごとの必要を備えてくださるということをお話します。
主は私達の日ごとの必要を備えてくださる。
詩篇２３篇は多くの方達によく知られている聖書の言葉です。それは、なんと素朴で、しかしなんと力強い言葉なのでしょう。この詩篇２３篇の舞台はおそらくその著者ダビデが幼少時代をすごしたベツレヘムの野原だったと思います。彼は幼い時から羊飼いで、彼の一日は日の出と同時に羊を引き連れて野に出て行き、一日を羊と共に過ごし、日が暮れる前に羊をまた連れて帰ってくるという生活でした。もちろん、野にはエルサレムの荘厳な神殿を思わせる物は何もありませんでしたが、その開けた野原と大空こそが人の手によって造られた神殿以上にダビデにとって神の臨在を感じ、神からの語りかけを聞く場所だったのです。
二週間前にヨナ書からお話しましたように、神様は私達の置かれている環境や経験を通して語りかけるお方です。ダビデは日々、自分が従事しているその仕事の現場で神のかたりかけを聞いたに違いありません。そのことを思い起こしながら詩篇２３篇を書き記したのです。
主はわたしの牧者であって、わたしには乏しいことがない。主はわたしを緑の牧場に伏させ、いこいのみぎわに伴われる（詩篇２３篇1節－２節）。"He makes me to lie down in green pastures, He leads
me besides still waters."
ダビデの職業は羊飼い、牧者です。彼はその自分の仕事について思いを寄せた時に、すなわち自分が羊にしていることを思った時に、それはまさしく父なる神が自分に日々、なしていてくださることなのだということを知ったのです。
まさしくこの詩篇２３篇の冒頭の言葉は感謝祭の起源となった出来事に関することです。今から４００年近くも昔、イギリスから当地、米国大陸のプリマスに移住したピルグリム・ファーザーズが到着した年の冬は、多くの死者が出るほどに厳しい寒さだったといいます。そんな時に既にその地域に住んでいました先住民族のワンパノアグ族からピルグリム達は狩猟や農耕を学び、助けられたようです。そのかいあって翌年の秋には多くの収穫が与えられ、ピリグリム達はそのワンパノアグ族を招待し、神の恵みに感謝して共に食事を共にしたということが今日のサンクスギビングの始まりであるといわれています。皆さん、よくご承知のとおりです。すなわち彼らは与えられている日々の糧を喜び、感謝したのです。
ダビデが主はわたしを緑の牧場に伏させると言った言葉には二通りの意味があると思います。それは文字通り、緑の牧場に身を横たえてやすむことができるということと、羊の食物となる緑の牧場に牧者なる神は導いてくださるということです。さらにそれらに加えて、いこいのみぎわにも導いてくださる。すなわち、私の日ごとの糧を神は与えてくださるということです。
先日、血液検査をしました。最近は血液を調べるだけで私達の体の中で起きていることが分かります。私も送られてくる検査報告とその意味を調べながら自分の体調を確認しました。この体調管理ということについて私達の多くが心配することにコレステロールの数値や血糖値というものがあります。今日、この国の多くの人達が抱えている大きな問題は私達がカロリーを取りすぎているという問題です。言うまでもない、それは私達が必要以上のものを食べているということです。おそらく、このような問題が起きてきたのは人間の歴史の中ではついこの間のことで、これまでにこの地球に生きた人達のおそらく９９パーセントはカロリーを取りすぎて病気になってしまうということなど考えたことがなく、そんな人も実際にいなかったのではないかと思います。
このような時代に、アメリカという国に住む私達は日ごとの糧を与えてくださっている神様に感謝することは難しいことかもしれません。しかし、私達はこの朝、否、この朝のみならず、これから日々、私達にとって最も基本的かた最重要な必要なものを与えてくださる神様に感謝する者となりたいのです。
ダビデがこの詩篇２３篇を書き記した時代にはサルベーション・アーミーも、リタイヤメント・ベニフィットも、フッドスタンプもありませんでした。おそらく羊飼いの生活というものも安定したものではなかったことでしょう。確かに後に彼はイスラエルの王となりますから、その時には食べ物に窮することはなかったでしょうが、その少年時代、そして敵に追われて逃亡していた日々を過ごした時など、彼は何を食べていたのだろうかと思います。しかし、そのような安泰ではない状況を全て込みで彼は言ったのです。『主はわたしの牧者であって、わたしには乏しいことがない。主はわたしを緑の牧場に伏させ、いこいのみぎわに伴われる』。
二つ目のこと、それは主は私達の霊的な必要を備えてくださるということです。
心：主は私達の霊的な必要を備えてくださる
ここ最近、日本でも「スピリチュアル」という言葉がよく使われるようになりましたが、今から１５年近く前、世界保健機構（ＷＨＯ）の執行理事会でその憲章の前文に記されている健康の定義を書き直すということが提案されました。すなわちＷＨＯの健康の定義とは「健康とは、完全な肉体的、精神的及び社会的福祉の状態であり、単に疾病又は病弱の存在しないことではない」というもので、ここに「スピリチャルな健康」という言葉が加えられるということで厚生省も識者の意見を聞いたことがあるのですが、結局は定義の改正にはいたりませんでした。「スピリチャルな健康（spiritual
health）」を和訳する適切な言葉が見あたらず、信条的な健康とか、宗教的な健康と考えるなら、信条、宗教を持たない人々には適用できないのではないかと色々な意見が出たようです。言うまでもありません、世界保健機構はクリスチャン団体でも宗教団体でもありません。でも、彼らが健康の定義の中にスピリチャルなことが充足されていることが健康には欠かせないのだと言っているのです。
お話しましたようにダビデは神にあって私は乏しいことがない。神は私の日ごとの必要を与えてくださるからだといいました。そして、続いて彼が言った言葉はこのようなものでした。
『主はわたしの魂をいきかえらせ、み名のためにわたしを正しい道に導かれる』（詩篇２３篇３節）。"He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for
His name's sake."
かつて、ある国である残酷な実験がなされたそうです。ある乳幼児がその親から取りあげられて、ある場所で育てられました。その場所は人が暮らすのには申し分のない環境で、その子にはしっかりと栄養ある食べ物が与えられたそうです。しかし、その実験はその子には誰一人話しかけてはならない、誰一人触れてはならないという実験であり、結局、この幼児は幼くて死んでしまったというのです。私達は人間であり、自動車や石油ストーブとは違います。
私達は肉体の飢え渇きを覚えます。しかし、同時に私達は魂、すなわちその心においても乾きを感じるのです。肉体の乾きに対しては必要に応じて私達はそれを補充しています。補充しなければどうなるかということは目に見えて分かることなので、私達はすぐにそれに対応できます。
しかし、魂の乾きはどうでしょうか。この魂の乾きは時になかなか気がつかないことがあるのです。すぐにそれに対処せずともその症状がすぐにあらわれるものではありませんから、放置されっぱなしということもあります。しかし、その渇きはなくならずにそこにあり続けますので、やがてそれは姿かたちを変えて私達の心や体に大きな影響を与えます。
このことは時代にかかわらず人間に共通することで、詩篇１０７篇にもその心の有様が記されています。5彼らは飢え、またかわき、その魂は彼らのうちに衰えた。6彼らはその悩みのうちに主に呼ばわったので、主は彼らをその悩みから助け出し、7住むべき町に行き着くまで、まっすぐな道に導かれた。8どうか、彼らが主のいつくしみと、人の子らになされたくすしきみわざとのために、主に感謝するように。9主はかわいた魂を満ち足らせ、飢えた魂を良き物で満たされるからである（詩篇１０７篇５節－９節）。
この記者は魂の飢え渇きについて書き記し、それゆえにその心が衰えてしまったと言っています。しかし、その悩みの只中で主によばわったゆえに、主は彼らをその飢え渇きから助け出されたと記されています。これは詩篇２３篇の３節の『主はわたしの魂をいきかえらせ』という言葉に対応するものです。
詩篇１０７編の記者は続いて、その悩みから助けだしてくださった主は、私達を『住むべき町に行き着くまでまっすぐな道に導かれた』と書き記しています。興味深いことに詩篇２３篇のダビデも、「主はわたしの魂を生きかえらせ」という言葉の後に『み名のためにわたしを正しい道に導かれる』（詩篇２３篇３節）と記しています。
これはとても興味深いことです。どちらの記者も「道」について書いています。すなわち、どちらの記者も私達の心の飢え渇きを満たすためには、まっすぐな、私達が本来、住むべき町に確かに導かれる正しい道に導かれて、その道を歩み始めなければならないと言っているのです。そして、その道を歩み「私達が本来、おるべき場所」を見出さない限り、私達の心の飢え渇きは癒されることがないと両者は言っているのです。
この「道」について「住むべき町」についてさらに具体的に言われたのがイエス・キリストです。彼はこう言いました「わたしは道であり、真理であり、命である。だれでもわたしによらないでは、父のみもとに行くことはできない」ヨハネ１４章６節
肉体の飢え渇きなら水分と食物で回復することができましょう。緊急事態なら点滴を打つこともできるでしょう。それなら私達の心の飢え渇きは何によって回復されるのでしょうか。私達の魂の飢え渇きは「憂さ晴らし」で解決するものではないようです。きっと皆さんもご経験済みではないでしょうか。私達の魂の飢え渇きは「人が与えれくれる一時の愛情や慰め」で解決するものではありません。きっと皆さんもご経験済みではないでしょうか。「ねぇー、あなら私の心を満たしてよ」と言っても、その相手も乾いているのですから、人の愛とは惜しみなく奪いあうものですから、やがてそれは引き裂かれてしまうでしょう。
聖書の言うところの私達の魂の飢え渇きとは「私達がどこにいるのか」という、私達の存在そのものが取り扱われるべきことなのです。ゆえに、それは私達がおるべき場所、すなわち神のもとに立ち返るその道、すなわちイエス・キリストを見出し、その道を歩み、父のもとに帰らなければ到底、癒されるものではないというのです。
ダビデとて人間、彼も魂の飢え渇きを感じました。しかし、その自分の心を神は生かしてくださったと言っているのです。神は私達に魂の回復を与えてくださるお方です。このことゆえに私達は神様に感謝しましょう。最後の事、それは私達の霊について「主は私達の永遠の必要を備えてくださる」ということです。
霊：主は私達の永遠の必要を備えてくださる
6わたしの生きているかぎりは必ず恵みといつくしみとが伴うでしょう。わたしはとこしえに主の宮に住むでしょう（詩篇２３篇４節－６節）。

思えば「ぞっ」とするいう体の反応というものは、私達人間の心の奥底にある原始的な反応であり、最初から人間に組み込まれているものであり、それは、心の深いところにある人間に備わっている滞在的な恐れの反応ではないかと思います。
怪談のような話が始まると多くの人達はその話にひきつけられます。関心があるからです。普段は考えないのに、心のどこかで霊のことが気になるからです。合理的に、効率的に生きることが賞賛される世の中であるのなら、徹底的にそうすればいいのです。しかし、私達はそれでも霊というものが気になります。なぜですか、聖書に照らし合わせていえば、実際に霊魂というものは存在するからであり、私達自身もその意識の中でそのことを知っているゆえに、そのことに関心があり、反応するのです。
アメリカに暮らしていて気がつかされることが多くありますが、その一つにこの国に住む人達の死んだ人間の体に対する思いです。この思いには比較の対象があるのですが、それは日本で育ちました私にとってその対象は日本人です。牧師という仕事上、葬儀に立ち会うことが多くあります。その現場にいて気がつかされることは、この国に住む人達は日本人ほど遺体に対して特別な思いを抱いていないということです。
日本人が日本で亡くなられると可能な限り、その日のうちにお通夜がなされ、なくなられた方の遺体がそこには置かれます。しかし、ご存知のようにアメリカの場合、ビューイングという時をもたれる遺族もありますが、それは決して多くはありません。
そして、その理由は彼らは亡くなられた人間の体に対して、心のどこかでそれは文字通り「肉体」であるということを受け止めていて、最も大切なのはその肉体よりも、その中にある「霊」なのだという思いをもっている人が多いのではないかと想像しています（もちろん、全ての人がそうだとは思いません）。そして、その背景にはやはりバイブルがあるのではないかと思います。
この詩篇２３篇は最後に私達の地上で私達の体の機能が止まった瞬間から始まる新しい世界について語っています。すなわち、この詩篇２３篇は「わたしはとこしえに主の宮に住むでしょう」と記します。その主の宮にいたる瞬間に私達は何が必要なのでしょうか。その時にドライバーライセンスはいりません。その時にクレジットカードはいりません。もっと言いますと、私達の人生を共有してきた私達の肉体も必要ではなくなります。私達の霊が永遠の世界に移され、私達はそこで神が備えたもう主の宮に住むことになるからです。
私達の肉体はやがていつかその機能を全て止めることでしょう。しかし、私達はその時、神の宮におり、その所にとこしえに主と共に住むことになりましょう。先ほど「ゾッとする瞬間」について、それが人の心にある滞在的な恐れであるとお話しました。その滞在的な恐れとはきっと私達が死ぬということです。この紛れもない事実の前に人は恐れをもつのです。しかし、この詩篇２３篇を通して神様が私達に約束してくださっていることは、その死が恐れではなく、それは主と共に永遠に生きるその時が始まる瞬間だということなのです。
「銀河鉄道９９９」や「宇宙戦艦ヤマト」など宇宙を舞台にした漫画の作者、松本零士さんが先日、読売新聞のインタビューに答えていました。「夢は宇宙に行くこと。私は船酔いをしたことがなく、特別な訓練なしで宇宙にいける自信がある。誰か、俺をこのまま宇宙に打ち上げてくれ！」と。松本さんは自分の宇宙に対する夢をその作品に託していたのです。そして、そんな宇宙への思いの中で彼はこういっていました。「夢は宇宙に行くこと。行けば必ず宇宙の表現が変わる」
彼の作品は宇宙を舞台にしています。しかし、松本さんはまだそこには行ったことがありません。こちらからあちらを見て、資料を調べて、写真を見て、宇宙を想像しながらその作品を描き続けました。しかし、もし、自分がその宇宙に実際に身を置くのなら、必ず自分の宇宙に対する表現がかわると彼は言ったのです。
私達はまだ全てのことを見ることができません。まさしくパウロがコリント第一の手紙で「わたしたちは、今は、鏡に映して見るようにおぼろげに見ている。しかしその時には、顔と顔とを合わせて、見るであろう。わたしの知るところは、今は一部分にすぎない。しかしその時には、わたしが完全に知られているように、完全に知るであろう」（１３章１２節）と言っている通りです。しかし、私達が主のそなえたもう宮に行く時に、私達はそれまではおぼろげでしかなかった世界に対して、はじめてその永遠の世界に対して表現することができるようになり、さらに言いますと今、この地上に生きている時には持ちえなかった、この世界に対する新しい表現を得るに違いありません。この世界では理解できないことを多く体験する私達にとって、それは待望の瞬間です。
主にある兄弟姉妹、サンクスギビングディーを前に、今日は私達の霊と心の肉体についてお話しました。パウロが記したように私達と共にあるこれらの三つが守られることを祈ります。しかし、それ以上にこれらのことに対する十二分なケアーが既に神様によって私達に与えられているのです。私達はこの朝、そのことに感謝しましょう。主は私達の体を支えるために日ごとの糧を与え、私達の心を守るために本来、私達があるべきところへ導いてくださる道なるキリストを私達に与え、私達の霊を永遠にいかすために、私達から死の恐怖を取り除く、とこしえの宮を私達のために備えてくださっているのですから。
私達の生活の中には色々なことが起こりますが、人にとって最も大切なこの三つが私達に既に与えられているということ、そして、それが私達にとってどんなに大きな祝福であるのかということに思いをはせるのなら私達の心からはおのずと日ごとに主に対する感謝が生まれてくるのです。お祈りしましょう。

Reason We Give Thanks Daily
I
love fishing, so sometimes I would go down to the pier to cast a line. For
those who have no interest in fishing, a fisherman waiting all day with his
line in the water may seem comical. Under the blazing sun, they wait for the
catch and sometimes go home empty handed. They can probably buy fish for dinner
with the same money they spent that day on bait and transportation. This kind
of scene is often used in Japanese comic books where a father, after a day of
fishing without catch, buys some fish at the fish market on the way home to
forget about the miserable day he spent.
There
are certain things that you need when you go fishing. These include a fishing
pole, fishing line and hook, sinkers, and some bait. It may be possible to fish
without the fishing pole, sinkers, and bait, but you can’t fish without a line
and a hook. These are absolutely necessary for fishing.
In
the same way, there are things we need in order for us to stay alive. These
things include water, air to breathe, and food.
If we cannot get these things, we will surely lose our lives. But can a
person truly live with only water, air, and food? Out of his concern for the
people of Thessalonica, Paul writes in his letter the three things that need to
be taken care of, that are necessary for a person’s well being.
23 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole
spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Paul’s
prayer here asks that not only your whole body be kept blameless, in other
words protected by God, but also your spirit and soul. This is because these
things are essential for a person’s existence.
In accordance with our
current message series, we have been taking a look at each book from the Old
Testament, but today, as part of our Thanksgiving service, we will focus on
Psalm 23. This is a psalm by David that we all know well. The reason we are
taking a look at this psalm today is because David has written here about an
amazing fact in this simple song; that God provides for the essential needs of
our spirit, soul and body. Through
understanding and acknowledging this fact, let us give our thanks to God this
Thanksgiving Day. First I will talk about how God provides for our daily needs.
God provides us our daily
needs.
Psalm 23 is a famous
passage that is familiar to many. How simple yet so strong these words are. I
believe the scene described in Psalm 23 is the field in Bethlehem where David
spent his childhood. He was a shepherd since he was a child. Every morning he
went out into the fields, where he spent all day with the sheep, and came home
with the sheep before dusk. Of course, there must have been nothing in the
fields that resembled the majestic temple in Jerusalem, but in the vast fields
and under the open sky he felt the presence of God and heard God speak to him,
even more than in the manmade temple.
As we learned last week
from the Book of Jonah, God speaks to us through our experiences and the
environment we are in. David must have heard God speaking to him in the place
he worked as a shepherd. He was recalling those days as he wrote Psalm 23.
The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing."He makes me to lie
down in green pastures, He leads me besides still waters."
David worked as a shepherd.
When he pondered about his own work, how he cares for the sheep, he realized
that God the Father is doing exactly the same for him every day.
An event closely related to
the beginning words of Psalm 23 is known to be the origin of Thanksgiving Day.
About four hundred years ago, during the winter when the Pilgrims came from
England to Plymouth, Massachusetts, it is said that the weather was so harsh
that many people lost their lives. During this time of struggle the native
Wampanoag people helped the Pilgrims by teaching them how to hunt and farm in
their land. Because of this act of kindness, the following autumn they had a
great harvest, so the Pilgrims invited the Wampanoag people to feast together and
give thanks to God for the great blessings they received, and this is said to
be the origin of Thanksgiving Day. As you all know, they rejoiced for the daily
bread they received and gave thanks.
David said that the Lord
makes him to lie down in green pastures and I believe there are two meanings to
this. One is that he could literally lie down on the green pastures and the
other is that God our shepherd leads us to the pastures where there is grass
for His sheep to eat. In addition to this He leads us besides still waters. In
other words God provides us with our daily bread.
The other day, I went to
take a blood test. Today we can tell what’s going on in our own body just by
taking a blood test. I looked at the test results they sent me and checked to see
what the data was telling about my condition. Among the many health concerns we
have, high cholesterol and blood sugar concentration are probably the most
common. Today in the U.S., the big issue we face is that we are taking too much
calories. This means we eat more than we need. Most likely this kind of thing
appeared only recently in the history of mankind and probably ninety nine
percent of the people who have lived on earth have never even thought about
becoming sick by taking too much calories and I believe such people have never
existed.
It may be difficult to be
thankful toward God when He gives us our daily bread if we are living in the
States today in this kind of environment. But this morning, not just this
morning but from now on every day, let us be ones who are thankful to the Lord
who provides us with the most important things in our lives.
At the time David wrote Psalm 23, there
were no Salvation Army or retirement benefits or food stamps. The life of a
shepherd was probably not stable. After David became the king of Israel, he
probably did not suffer from hunger, but in his childhood and when he was
escaping from his enemies, I wonder what he had eaten. But even though he
experienced these hardships, he was still able to say this:
“The Lord is my Shepherd and I lack
nothing. He makes me to lie down in green pastures, He leads me besides still waters."
The second thing I would like to talk about is that God provides
for our spiritual needs.
Heart: The Lord provides
our spiritual needs
In recent years the word “spiritual” started being used more often even
in Japan and about 15 years ago, in a meeting of the World Health Organization
board members it was suggested that they rewrite the definition of “health” and
the organization defined health in the following way: “Health is a state of
complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of
disease or infirmity.” They were trying to add “spiritual health” in the
definition of health and the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare, after
asking for advice from experts, decided that if this was something that had to
do with people’s understanding of their own faith, it did not apply to those
who have no religious beliefs and they also found it very difficult to define spiritual
health in the Japanese language. Because of this they could not rewrite the
definition. The World Health Organization is not a Christian organization or
religious organization but even they believe that the state of our spirit is
essential for human health.
David said he lacks
nothing in God because God provides his daily necessities. And after that he
said this:
"He restores my
soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake."
Once, a very cruel experiment is known
to have taken place. An infant was taken from the parents and was raised in a
certain environment. The place was a perfect environment and the child was
given plenty of nutritious food. But no one was allowed to talk to or touch the
child. Eventually the child died at a very young age. We are human beings and
not the same as a car or an oil heater.
We feel physical thirst and starvation.
But at the same time, our souls, our hearts feel thirst. We supply ourselves
for our physical needs because we know what know if we don’t take care of our
body, so we can quickly respond to them.
But how about the thirst in our soul? We
tend not to realize this thirst. Even if we don’t respond to this thirst, the
symptoms do not appear immediately. But this thirst does not disappear and
eventually brings great consequences to our soul and body.
This thirst is seen in humans throughout history and we see this
in Psalm 107:
5They
were hungry and thirsty,
and their lives ebbed away.
6 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
and he delivered them from their
distress.
7 He led them by a straight way
to a city where they could settle.
8 Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love
and his wonderful deeds for mankind,
9 for he satisfies the thirsty
and fills the hungry with good
things. (Psalm 107:5-9)
The writer of this
song describes the thirst of soul and because of that, their lives ebbed away.
But in the midst of their trouble, people cried out to the Lord and because of
that the Lord delivered them from their distress. It corresponds to the verse “
The Lord refreshes my soul.” in Psalm 23:3.
And the writer of
Psalm 107 says the Lord who rescued them from distress “led them by a straight
way to a city where they could settle”. Interestingly, we see the same thing in
Psalm 23, after the verse “The Lord refreshes my soul”, where David writes “He
guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake”.
This is very
interesting. Both writers are writing about the “Way”. They both said in order
for us to fulfill the thirst of our soul, we have to be led by and start
walking in a straight and right way to the city where we could settle. And both
writers said if we do not find the place where we should be, the place where we
belong, the thirst and hunger of our soul cannot be cured.
The
person who clearly spoke about “the way” and “the city we should live” is Jesus
Christ. In John 14:6 Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except
through me.
Our physical hunger
and thirst can be taken care of with food and water. If it is an emergency, you
can receive an IV. Then how can the hunger and thirst of the soul be
cured? This cannot be solved by
recreation. You might know this already from experience. This thirst cannot be
solved by somebody’s temporary love or words of encouragement. You may have
already experienced this also. Even if
you ask someone to fulfill the need of your soul, the other person is also
thirsting, and as it is the nature of human love to take from each other, it
will eventually result in the two being torn apart.
The Bible is telling
us that our spiritual thirst has to do with “where we are” and that it has do
with existence itself. Because of this, where we really belong is where God is
and the way we get there is through Jesus Christ, who leads us to the Father
through repentance. Without this our hunger and thirst will never be cured.
Even David was a
human being and he too felt hunger and thirst. But he said that the Lord
refreshed his soul. God is the one who gives life and restores our soul. Let us
give thanks to God for this. Lastly we will see that the Lord provides for our
spirit in eternity.
Spirit: The Lord provides our eternal necessities.
6 Surely your
goodness and love will follow me all
the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
Every summer, the TV networks in Japan will have ghost story
specials during primetime. Entertainers
talk about the scary events they have experienced and the purpose of this is
apparently to give people the chills to cope with the hot weather. So these
programs aren’t seen too much during winter. No one wants to have chills up
their spine when it is already freezing. I don’t think there are too many
countries that air scary ghost stories during primetime like Japan. Although
outwardly Japan is known as a Buddhist nation, the fact is that the country has
no firm religious beliefs. But these people who don’t care about religion are
attracted to these stories of ghosts. In other words, the Japanese are
irreligious but they are very interested in these stories of spirits.
The reaction we have of getting chills when we feel fear may be
something that is deeply rooted within our souls, something that have been part
of us from the beginning, a fear toward something unknown.
Many people are attracted to these kinds of scary stories. This is
because they stir their interest. They are curious even though they usually
never think about spirits. If it is respectable to live rationally and
efficiently in this world then one should diligently strive to do this. But
even then, we are curious about this thing called spirit. The reason, according
to the Bible, is that this thing called a spirit really exists and because we
know this intuitively we are interested and react to these stories.
There are many things I have realized by living in the States and
one of these is the difference in people’s thoughts and feelings toward a dead
person’s body. Because I grew up in Japan, I compare this to the view of the
Japanese people. Because of my occupation as a pastor, I attend many funerals.
What I have realized through attending these funerals is that the people in
this country are not as attached to the body of the deceased as the people of
Japan.
When a person passes away in Japan, they hold a vigil that night
if it is possible and the body of the deceased is will remain there. But as you
know in the US, though some families hold viewings for their loved ones, it is
not very common.
And the reason for this I believe, although there may be some
exceptions, is because people in this country are able to accept the dead body
as literally just a body and we know that the most important part of the person
is the spirit. I believe this is rooted in the people’s understanding of the
Bible.
Lastly, Psalm 23 tells us about the new world that begins right
after our bodies cease to function on this earth. It says “I will dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.” What do we need when we enter the house of the Lord?
We don’t need a driver’s license. We wouldn’t need our credit card. To go even
further, we do not need the body we have lived in our whole life. This is
because our spirit will be sent to the eternal world and we will live in the
house of the Lord which has been prepared for us by God.
Our body will completely stop functioning one
day. But at that moment, we will live in the house of the Lord and there we
live with the Lord forever. I mentioned earlier about the chilling feeling we
feel when we fear the unknown. This deeply rooted fear of the unknown must be
our fear of death. When we face this is undeniable truth we have a fear. But
through Psalm 23, God has promised to us that death is not to be feared but it
is the beginning moment of our eternal life with the Lord.
Reiji Matsumoto, the author of the Japanese comic books “Galaxy
Express 999” and “Space Cruiser Yamato”, said in an interview, “My dream is to
go to space. I have never been sea sick so I am confident that I could go to
space without any special training.” He continued, “I wish someone would just
launch me into the universe!” He expressed his dreams for space in his work and
said “My dream is going to space. Once I go there, my expressions of space will
definitely change.”
His stories take place in space. But Mr. Matsumoto has never been
there. He studied with books and pictures of space and created his work while
imaging space. And he said if he were to go to space his expression of it will
be changed. We humans are not able see the whole picture yet. Just as Paul says in 1 Corinthians 13:12
For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know
fully, even as I am fully known.But when we go to the house that the Lord
prepared for us, we can express the eternal world and that cannot be the same
expressions as we live on this earth.
Brothers and sisters in
Christ, before Thanksgiving Day, today I talked about our spirit, soul , and
body. As Paul wrote, I pray that all three will be kept and protected by God.
But God has already given us enough care to these. Let us thank God for this.
The Lord provides our daily bread and in order to protect our soul, He gave us
Jesus Christ who is the way to lead us where we should be and to make our spirit
live forever and He prepared for us the eternal house that removes our fear of
death.
Even though many things happen in our life, these three most
important things are already provided for us and that is a great blessing. If
we are able to know this every day, our thankfulness toward God will spring up
from the bottom of our hearts. Let us pray.
