数年前、デスバレーに行きました。そこは、その名のごとく荒野が延々と続く生き物を拒絶するような厳しい死の谷です。きっとこのバレーを衛星写真で見るのなら、緑などどこにもなく一面が茶色をしているこでしょう。しかし、実際にその土地を歩いて、注意深く足元を見てみると、あちこち思いがけないところに小さな花が咲いていることに気がつきました。荒涼とした土地だけに目がいくのではなく、荒野に咲いているこのような一輪の花を見失うことがありませんように。
『剣を逃れて生き残った民は荒野で恵みを得た。イスラエルが安息を求めた時、主は遠くから彼に現われた。わたしは限りなき愛をもってあなたを愛している。それゆえ、わたしは絶えずあなたに真実を尽くしてきた』（エレミヤ３１章２節ー３節）。

エレミヤ：荒野に神の恵みあり

エレミヤ３１：１－３
毎週の礼拝ごとに私達は聖書の一書を見てきております。今日はその中のエレミヤ書を見てまいりたいと願っています。エレミヤ書はその名のとおり、エレミヤという預言者が今から２６００年も昔に口述によってバルクという書記に書き記させたものです。２６００年と言いますとはるか昔のことと思われますし、はたしてそんな昔に起きたことが今を生きる自分と何の関わりがあるのかと思いますが、人間の本質というものは今も昔もほぼ同じでありまして、私達はそのエレミヤの経験したことから得るものが多くあります。
彼は南ユダという国に生きたのですが、国は政治的に混乱しており、国民の倫理は地に落ち、虎視眈々と南ユダを飲み込もうとしているバビロンからの脅威を受けている大変な時代でした。そのような時にエレミヤは若干２０歳で神様によって預言者として召し出されました。
先週イザヤが神様の声に聞き従った時、南ユダの民達の心は頑なで誰も彼の声に耳を傾けなかったということをお話しましたが、同じように、いやイザヤの時代以上にエレミヤの活動は困難を極めました。
この時の南ユダの状態についてエレミヤ書はこう記しています『エチオピア人はその皮膚を変えることができようか。豹はその斑点を変えることができようか。もしそれができるならば、悪に慣れたあなたがたも、善を行うことが出来る』エレミヤ１３章２３節
『おとめはその飾り物を忘れることができようか。花嫁はその帯を忘れることができようか。ところが、わたしの民の、わたしを忘れた日は数えがたい』と主は嘆かれる（エレミヤ２章３２節）。
民らの生活は乱れに乱れ『彼らは姦淫を行い、遊女の家に群れ集まった。彼らは肥え太った丈夫な雄馬のように、おのおの、いなないて隣の妻を慕う』（エレミヤ５章７節、８節）。
また『不義をもってその家を建て、不法をもってその高殿を造り、隣り人を雇って何をも与えず、その賃金を払わない』（エレミヤ２２章１３節）というような搾取や横暴が繰り返されました。
このような落ちるところまで落ちた状態の中で主は言われました『たといモーセとサムエルとがわたしの前に立っても、わたしの心はこの民を顧みない』（エレミヤ１５章１節）。『この地はみな滅ぼされて荒れ地となる。そしてその国々は七十年の間、バビロンの王に仕える』（エレミヤ２５章１１節）。
このような救いがたい南ユダの暗黒時代にエレミヤが受けた使命とはイスラエルは守られ、安泰であるということを民に伝えるのではなく、彼らが一刻も早く敵国、すなわちバビロンに降伏するようにというものでした。すなわち彼は主の言葉を受けて、こう叫び続んだのです。
『主はこう言われる、この町にとどまる者は剣や、飢饉や、疫病で死ぬ。しかし出てカルデヤ人にくだる者は免れる』（エレミヤ３８章２節）。カルデヤ人とはバビロンのことです。エレミヤは彼の思いではなく、主の言葉を受けて、敵国バビロンに屈せよというのです。
このようなことをエレミヤが民に語り続けていたその当時、彼と同じように預言者と呼ばれている人達がいました。中にはこんな預言者の一団もいたようです。『彼らは、手軽にわたしの民の傷をいやし、平安がないのに『平安、平安』と言っている』（エレミヤ６章１４節）。
この一団はエレミヤとは全く違うことを言っていました。本来、預言者のはたらきとは現在と将来を的確に見据え、それがグッドニュースであってもバッドニュースであっても神の言葉をそのまま民に伝えることでした。しかし、この預言者たちの霊的洞察は浅く、平安などどこにもないのに彼らは今の時代は平安だ、平安だと言っていたというのです。
当時も今も変わらないことは、誰も耳障りなことは聞きたくないということで、このような預言者達が迫害にあったり、非難されることはありませんでした。しかし、この誤った預言の罪は大きかったのです。彼らは既に燃えている火を見ることをせず、「何の問題もない、安心しなさい」と民に言い続けてきたのですから。
ですからその時のイスラエルの民達はあたかもぬるま湯につかっているカエルのようなもので、最初は心地よいのですが、その鍋の下、すなわち見えないところでは火が燃え続けていたのです。そして気がついた時には既に手遅れということになったのです。
「平安だ、平安だ」と言っている預言者は民の反発も害も受けませんでした。しかし、エレミヤは売国奴、裏切り者と言われました。エルサレムの高官達は言いました『この人を殺してください。このような言葉をのべて、この町に残っている兵士の手と、すべての民の手を弱くしているからです。この人は民の安泰を求めないで、その災いを求めているのです』（エレミヤ３８章４節）エレミヤは嘆きます『全国の人はわたしと争い、わたしを攻める。わたしは人に貸したこともなく、人に借りたこともないのに、皆わたしをのろう』（エレミヤ１５章１０節）。『わたしはほふられに行く、おとなしい小羊のようで、彼らがわたしを害しようと、はかりごとをめぐらしているのを知らなかった。
■彼らは言う「さあ、木とその実を共に滅ぼそう。生ける者の地から彼を絶って、その名を人に忘れさせよう』（エレミヤ１１章１９節）。
このような取り扱いを全国民から受けても、もし１０人の人達が自分を理解してくれるのなら心強いものです。得てしてそのような人達は自分が生まれ育った郷里の人達であることが多いのですが、彼の郷里、アナトテの人々はどうだったでしょうか。
『主はアナトテの人々についてこう言われる、彼らはあなたの命を取ろうと求めて言う、「主の名によって預言してはならない。それをするならば、あなたは我々の手にかかって死ぬであろう」』（エレミヤ１１章２１節）。
それではその郷里の身内や親類はどうだろう。エレミヤにとって彼らは残された数少ない望みのはずです。しかしエレミヤ書は『あなたの兄弟達、あなたの父の家のものさえ、あなたを欺き、大声をあげて、あなたを追っている。彼らが親しげにあなたに語ることがあっても、彼らを信じてはならない』（エレミヤ１２章６節）と記しています。
家族や親類も彼を騙し打ちにしようとしているというのです。それなら神の前に契りを結んだ最後の望み、伴侶はどうだろう。自分と共に立つ者が一人でもいてくれて、重荷を分かち合うことができるのならそれは大きな励ましであり、慰めです。しかし、主は彼に言われました『あなたはこの所で妻をめとってはならない。また息子、娘を持ってはならない』（エレミヤ１６章２節）。
彼はそのような伴侶も子もいませんでした。自分を支えてくれる、理解してくれる身内がない、彼は一人、そんな中を使命に生きたのです。それでも自分のしていることに好ましい結果が残るのならいい。しかし、彼は何も得ませんでした。彼はこう言います。
『わたしは一日中、物笑いとなり、人はみなわたしをあざけります。それはわたしが語り、呼ばわるとこに「暴虐、滅亡」と叫ぶからです。主の言葉が一日中、わが身のはずかしめと、あざけりになるからです』ですから彼は言いました『主のことは重ねて言わない、このうえその名によって語ることはしない』（エレミヤ２０章７節ー９節）。彼がどれだけ窮地に追い込まれていたかと言うことが分かります。
10わたしはだれに語り、だれを戒めて、聞かせようか。見よ、彼らの耳は閉ざされて、聞くことができない。見よ、彼らは主の言葉をあざけり、それを喜ばない。11それゆえ、わたしの身には主の怒りが満ち、それを忍ぶのに、うみつかれている。「それをちまたにいる子供らと、集まっている若い人々とに漏らせ』（エレミヤ６章１０節ー１１節）
もはや彼の言葉を聞く者達はおらず、巷にいる子や若者に彼のメッセージを伝えるというのです。
彼は苦しさのあまり『わが母よ、あなたは、なぜ、わたしを産んだのか』（エレミヤ１５章１０節）と自らの出生を嘆き、『主よ、あなたがわたしを欺かれたので、わたしはその欺きに従いました』（エレミヤ２０章７節）と主を非難したり、『主の言葉が一日中、わが身のはずかしめと、あざけりになる』ので『主のことは、重ねて言わない、このうえその名によって語ることはしない』と開き直りました（エレミヤ２０章８節、９節）。
どうでしょうか。誰がエレミヤのはたらきをしようと思うでしょうか。こんな使命を引き受ける人はいないでしょう。しかし、彼は苦しみ、悲しみ、嘆きつつも、そのはたらきをやめることはありませんでした。なぜだと思いますか？
『わたしはみ言葉を与えられて、それを食べました。み言葉は、わたしに喜びとなり、心の楽しみとなりました』（エレミヤ１５章１６節）。
エレミヤの使命とそれに対する人々の反応を考えますと、彼の生活のどこに楽しみとか喜びというものがあるかと思います。しかし、彼は主の言葉によって喜び、楽しんだというのです。
あまりの苦しさに預言をやめようとさえ思った時にも彼は言いました『主の言葉がわたしの心にあって、燃える火のわが骨のうちに閉じ込められているようで、それを押さえるのに疲れはてて、耐えることできません』（エレミヤ２０章９節）。彼はその内に主から与えられた言葉を閉じ込めておくことができなかったのです。
大変な困難の中において、主の御言葉が彼を支えたのです。そして、それは私達も同じです。まったく孤立無援のようなところに立つ時、まさしく四面楚歌のような状況に置かれてしまっていると感じる時、主は私達に慰めとなるものを与えてくださるのです。そして神様は使命という名のもとに、私達の内からわいてくる情熱を与えてくださるのです。語るべき主の言葉がその心からわきあがってきて、もはや閉じ込めておくことができないというのです。彼は苦しみ、弱り果てつつも、神の言葉に生きる喜びとそれを伝える情熱によって預言者としてのはたらきを続けたのです。そんな彼に神様はある時、このような言葉を語りかけました。
「つるぎを逃れて生き残った民は、荒野で恵みを得た。イスラエルが安息を求めた時、主は遠くから彼に現れた。わたしは限りなき愛をもってあなたを愛している。それゆえ、わたしは絶えずあなたに真実を尽くしてきた」(エレミヤ３１章２節－３節）。
荒野とは読んで字のごとく、荒れた地です。何か草木が茂る地、朝夕の寒暖の差が激しい土地です。水もないような地、そして、命ある者を拒絶するような場所です。
しかし、その荒野で民は恵みを得たというのです。そうです、これはこれ以前に起きた、モーセにより４０年間、荒野を旅したイスラエルの民の出エジプトの後の年月がモチーフとなっております。奴隷でありながら、エジプトの剣を逃れて脱出してきたイスラエルの民が荒野で紅海を渡り、昼は雲の柱、夜は火の柱、天からのマナなど多くの恵みを受けました。彼らにとって荒野での生活が過酷だったのでは事実です。しかし、主はまさしくその荒野の只中で恵みを彼らの上に注がれたのです。荒野という場において神様はご自身をご顕現なさったのです。
そして、この言葉は同時にこれから、南ユダ王国はバビロンに滅ぼされ、剣を逃れた者達はバビロンに捕らえられていく。世に言うバビロン捕囚という場においても、そこが恵みの場となるという希望の言葉なのです。
エレミヤはこの言葉を聞き、またそれを民に伝えながら、この言葉を自分にも語られている言葉として受け止めたのではないかと思います。確かに彼が置かれている場所は荒野です。彼に対する攻撃や中傷がなくなることはありません。しかし、そのような中にあっても神様の恵みが注がれているということを彼は自らの励みとしたのでしょう。
このメッセージで私はエレミヤと共にある者はいなかったと申しました。郷里アナトテの人達、親族、そして彼は妻も持たなかったと。しかし、実は彼には彼と共に行動をした一人の人がいました。それは彼の言葉を口述してこのエレミヤ記を書いたバルクという書記です。かつては一度、南ユダの王であったエホヤキムによって彼らが書き記した書が燃やされた時も、南ユダがエレミヤの預言どおり滅ぼされて、エレミヤがエジプトに連行された時もバルクはエレミヤと共にいました。エレミヤの言葉を書き記したのですから、バルクはよくよくエレミヤの思いを理解したことでしょう。まさしく彼はエレミヤの使命と共に命がけで生きたのです。自分には誰もいない、家族も伴侶もいない、しかし、確かに神様は彼にかけがえのない一人の同士を与えておられました。まさしく荒野においても神様は彼に必要な恵みをほどこされていたのです。
そして、その恵みはその時だけでは知りえないものであったかもしれません。
沢村五郎先生の書かれたエレミヤに対する書を読んでおりましたところ、その中で先生は興味深いことを書いていました。先にユダでは誰もエレミヤの言葉に耳を傾ける者はなく、彼はそれを子供らと若者達に伝えたとお話ししましたが（エレミヤ６章１１節）、先生はその子供達の中に信仰の人、ダニエルがいたのではないかと書いています。
そう、ダニエルとはエレミヤの言葉に従わなかった南ユダが彼の預言どおりにバビロンによって滅ぼされた後に、バビロンのネブカデネザル王がユダヤ人の「王族と貴族の中から、体に難点がなく、容姿が美しく、何事にも才能と知恵があり、知識と理解力にとみ、宮廷に仕える能力のある」（ダニエル１章４節）少年たちを選び出して連れてこさせた、その少年の中の一人です。
これはあくまでも憶測ですが、このように国全体が堕落してしまって、誰もエレミヤの言葉に耳を傾けることがなかった時代に、全く揺らぐことのない信仰をもったダニエルのような若者がいたということは奇跡です。南ユダといえどもその国全体は決して大きなものではありませんでしたから、ダニエルが命がけで神の言葉を語り続けるエレミヤの姿を見て育ったことは十分に考えられます。誰もエレミヤの言葉などは聞いていないと思われる中にありながら、その言葉は無駄ではなく確かにその言葉は一人の若者の心に刻まれ、そのダニエルは後に捕囚の民の一人でありながら、バビロンという国に大きな影響を与える信仰的キーパーソンとなるのです。
私達は数年前、デスバレーに行きました。その名のごとく「死の谷」です。砂漠のような土地で夏などに行こうなんて思いません。衛星写真で見るのなら、まさしく死の谷、緑などなく一面が砂色をしています。しかし、実際にデスバレーを歩いて注意深く足元を見てみるとそこにはあちらにもこちらにも小さな花が咲いていることに気がつきます。
神様は言われました「わたしは限りなき愛をもってあなたを愛している。それゆえ、わたしは絶えずあなたに真実を尽くしてきた」。荒野の恵みとそこに注がれている限りない愛は確かに私達に注がれています。その神の絶え間ない真実は私達には大きすぎてその時には分からないことがあります。私達が荒野で直面する諸々のことに心が奪われて見えなくなってしまうことがあります。しかし、確かにそこには神の真実と恵みがあるのです。
エレミヤは困難の極みを生きました。しかし、その荒野においてその使命を全うしました。それは彼が神様の愛と真実にとらわれていたからであり、その彼のはたらきは彼の時代のみならず次の時代のために欠かすことのできないものとなったのです。
皆さん、私達も形こそ違えどイスラエルの民のように、またエレミヤのように荒野を通らされるようなことがあります。しかし、その時に落胆しないでください。神様は確かにその荒野において私達に恵みを注ぎ、その荒野の只中でもそのご愛と真実は私達に与え続けられているのです。荒野に咲くこの神様の愛と真実という花を私達は見出すのです。お祈りしましょう。
Gods blessing in the Desert
Jeremiah 31: 1 – 3

We have been
looking at each Book of the bible in our service every week.Today, I wish to look at the book of Jeremiah amongst
others. As name implies,
Book of Jeremiah was dictated to his Secretary, Baruch,
around 2,600 years ago. Since the nature of the people are similar at than and
now, we have many things to gain from Jeremiah's experiences even though 2,600
years sound so ancient, and think, what affect will the events that took places
so long ago will have on the people who lives now.
He lived in
Southern Judah when country was in difficult time logically and politically and
was at same time threatened by Babylonia with a vigilant eyes.
At that time, Jeremiah was just a 20 years old when the
God appointed him as a prophet.
Jeremiah's
activities were very dangerous, more than that of Isiah’s who obeyed the God's
words but people of Southern Judah were so stubborn that nobody listened to him
as I said last week.
Jeremiah noted the
condition of Southern Judah at that time as; Can the Ethiopian change his skin
or the leopard its spots? Neither can you do good who are accustomed to doing
evil. (Jeremiah 13; 23)
Does a maiden
forget her Jewelry, a bride her wedding ornaments? Yet my people forgotten me,
days without number. As the Lord moans. (Jeremiah 2; 32)
People lives fall
into to disarray as; They committed adultery and thronged to the houses of
prostitutes. They are well-fed, lusty stallions, each neighing for another
man's wife. (Jeremiah 5; 7 & 8)
And; Woe to him
who builds his palace by unrighteousness, his upper room by injustice, making
his countrymen work for nothing, not paying them for their labor. (Jeremiah 2;
13)
When they fallen
deep into the hole, Lord said; Even if Moses and Samuel were to stand before me, my heart will not go out to his
people. (Jeremiah 15; 1) This whole country will become a desolate wasteland, and
these nations will serve the king of Babylon seventy years. (Jeremiah 25:11)
The mission that
Jeremiah received during the dark ages of Southern Judah was to tell people to surrender to Babylon rather then to
tell people that Israel was safe and guarded. That is, he received the God words and
call out to the people;
This is what the Lord says, “ whoever stays in this city
will die by the sword, famine or plague, but whoever goes over to Babylonians
will live” (Jeremiah 38; 2). Rather than his own though, Jeremiah accepted the
Lords words and told people to surrender to the enemy, Babylonians.
When Jeremiah was telling people about this, there were
others who were call prophets as he was. There was a group of prophets like
this amongst them; They
dress the wound of my people as though it were not
serious. 'Peace, peace',
they say, when there is no peace. ( Jeremiah 6; 14)
This group of
people said entirely different things than what Jeremiah said. Naturally,the
work of prophet was to tell the people the Gods words exactly, whether it is a
good news or a bad news by looking at present and future. However, these
prophet's spiritual insight was so shallow that they keep saying 'peace, peace'
when there was no peace.
One thing that
won't change, now and then, is nobody wants to hear a thing that is offensive
to the ear. That is why these type of prophets never suffered criticism nor
prosecutions. But the sin of false prophecy was mighty.
Because without seeing any smoldering fires they said to the people “there is
no problem, be happy”.
That is why the people of Israel at that time were just
like a frog that was submerged in lukewarm water, first he felt comfortable,
but under the pot where he can not see, the fire was burning. When he realized
it, it was too late.
The prophets who
called out “Peace, Peace” did not even received resistance nor harm from the
people. Yet, Jeremiah was called betrayer and traitor. The officials of
Jerusalem said; This man should be put to death. He is discouraging the
soldiers who are left in the city, as well as all the people, by the things he
is saying to them. This man is not seeking the good of these people but their
ruin. (Jeremiah 38; 4)
Jeremiah grieved; A man with whom the whole land strives
and contends! I have neither lent nor borrowed, yet everyone curses me. (Jeremiah
15; 10)
I had been like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter; I did
not realized that they had plotted against me, saying, “let us destroy the tree
and its fruit; let us cut him off from land of the living, that his name be
remembered no more.” (Jeremiah 11; 19)
It is reassuring
to know that even 10 people understand you, even though you have been treated
like that. Usually people who support you are from your native town. Then how
about the people of the Anathoth, that is his own native town;
This is what the Lord says about the men of Anathoth who
are seeking your life and saying 'Do not prophesy in the name of the Lord or you will die by our hand'. (
Jeremiah 11; 21)
How about his
family and relatives in his native town? They must been the few remaining hopes
that were left for Jeremiah. But the book of Jeremiah says;
Your brothers, your own family- even they have betrayed
you; they have raised a loud cry against you. Do not trust them, though they
speak well of you. (Jeremiah 12; 6)
How about his last hope, that is his companion
who vowed in front of the God.
It is very encouraging and comforting to know that there
is someone there, who can share the load together. But the Lord said to him; You
must not marry and have sons or daughters in this place. (Jeremiah 16; 2)
He did not have a
wife nor the children. Through it, he lived doing his missions
alone all by himself , without having any relatives to
support him nor to understand what he was doing. It would have been fine if he
has left with favorable result, but he did not accomplished anything. He
said; I am ridiculed
all day long; everyone mocks me. Whenever I speak, I cry
out proclaiming violence and destruction. That is why he said; So the words of
the Lord has brought me insult and reproach all day long. (Jeremiah 20; 7 – 9)
Now we understand how deeply he was trapped into a difficult situations.
10 To whom can I
speak and give warning? Who will listen to me? Their ears are closed so they
can not hear. The word of the Lord is offensive to them; they find no pleasure
in it. 11 But I am full of the wrath of the Lord, and cannot hold it in. 'Pour
it out on the children in the street and on the young
men gathered together.' (Jeremiah 6; 10 & 11)
No longer, there is anyone left to listen to him,
therefore it is saying here to tell his message to the children in the street
and to the young men gathered together.
Because he
suffered so much that he deplored his birth by saying; Alas, my mother, that
you gave me birth, (Jeremiah 15; 10) and criticized the Lord with
O Lord, you deceived me, and I was deceived. (Jeremiah
20; 7) and he assumed
a defiant attitude; The word of the Lord has brought me
insult and reproach all day long, for I will not mention him or speak any more
in his name. (Jeremiah 20; 8 & 9)
How about it. Who would think doing the Jeremiah's work.
Nobody would like to take on a mission like this. But Jeremiah did not give up
his work even though
he suffered, regretted and deplored it. Why do you think?
Jeremiah 15; verse
16 says; When your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart's
delight.
When you think
about Jeremiah's mission and the people's reactions, where do you think his joy
and delight are? Yet he said Lord's words were my joy and heart's delight.
Even when he
suffered so much and felt like stop prophesying, he said; His words is in my
heart like a burning fire, shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in;
indeed, I cannot. (Jeremiah 20; 9) He could no longer contain Lord's words with
in him that were given to him.
In the midst of
countless difficulties, the Lord's words supported him. It will be a same with
us. The Lord will provide us with something that will comfort us when we are
put into a situation where we are isolated without getting any help or when we
feel like we are in the enclosed area. And in the name of mission, the God will
provide us with an enthusiasm that will gush out from within us. Jeremiah is
saying that he no longer can contained it. The Lord's words that I have to tell
are flowing out of my heart. He continued his work as a prophet because of his
enthusiasm of telling the joy of living with Lord's words, even though he was
getting weak and suffering. As such as he was, The God spoke to him;
2 'The people who survive the sword will find favor in
the desert; I will come to give rest to Israel.' 3 The Lord appeared to us in
the past, saying: 'I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you
with loving kindness.'
(Jeremiah 31; 2 & 3)
Desert is a waste
land where cold and hot temperatures deference are intense and the land where
water is scarce and denies any living creatures.
Yet, people said they received the blessing in
that desert. Yes, the event that took place after the people of Israel left the
Egypt, that is, because of Moses the people of Egypt have wondered in the
desert for 40 years, is the motif. The people of the Israel have received many
blessings. Even though they were slaves, they have fled
from the swords and escaped from the Egypt, have crossed
the Red Sea in the desert, and received the pillar of cloud in the day, pillar
of fire in the night and Manna from the sky. Truly, the life in the desert was
very severe for them. But the Lord pour
out his blessing on them in the middle of the desert. The Lord disclosed
himself in the desert.
And at same time,
these words also implies to the incident that will follows, where the people of
the Kingdom of Southern Judah, who escaped the swords and will be captured by
the Babylonians as the prisoners, will also received the God's blessings.
Jeremiah heard
these words and conveyed it to the people, but at same time he must accepted
that these words were told to himself also. Yes, the place he was placed was a
desert. The assaults and the slanders against him did not stop. But in midst of
all these happenings, he must been encouraged knowing that the God's blessings
were on him.
I told you in this
message that Jeremiah was alone. He did not even have a wife nor relatives nor
the people of Anathoth, his hometown. However, there was a person who worked
with Jeremiah. He was Jeremiah's secretary named Baruch who wrote the Book of
Jeremiah by Jeremiah's dictations. Baruch was with Jeremiah when Jehoiakim ,who
was a king of the Southern Judah, burned the book that he had written through
dictations and when Jeremiah was taken away to Egypt when Southern Judah was
destroyed as Jeremiah has prophesied. Baruch most understood the Jeremiah's
mind in order to take Jeremiah's dictations. He lived his life with Jeremiah's
missions. The God had provided Jeremiah with irreplaceable
partner even-though he had nobody, no family nor no
companion. Surely, the God has given him the needed blessings in the desert.
May be that
blessings were not understood completely at that time. When I was reading a
book written by Mr. Goro Sawamura about Jeremiah, I noticed something very
interesting thing that he wrote. As I said before, in Judah, nobody listen to
Jeremiah so he told it on the children and on the young men. (Jeremiah 6; 11)
Mr. Nakamura is saying that may be Daniel, the man of the faith, was in the
group of children.
Yes, Daniel was
the one of the young men that was selected by Nebuchadnezzar,
the king of the Babylon, after the Southern Judah was
destroyed by the Babylonians as prophesied because people would not listened to
Jeremiah. Daniel chapter one; verse 4 say; Bring in some of the Israelites from
the royal family and the nobility – young men without any physical defect,
handsome, showing aptitude for every kind of learning, well informed, quick to
understand and qualified to serve in the king's palace.
This is my
conjecture but it is amazing that young man like Daniel, who possessed the
faith that would not sways, has existed in the time when nobody would listened
to the words of Jeremiah and in the time when country itself was in a such
disarray. I am almost certain that Daniel has grown up seeing Jeremiah
continuously talk about the God's words even risking his own life. Even-though
it appeared that nobody was listening to the Jeremiah's words, that words were
not wasted since that words were must etched into the one young man's heart.
Daniel became key person of the faith who had a big influence on the country of
Babylon even though he was a one of the prisoners.
Few years ago, we
went to Death Valley. As a name implies, it is a “ dead valley”. It is like
desert and I don't want to think about going in summer. When you looked at
satellite picture, no doubt it is a dead valley. There is no green but dirt
color all over the place. Yet, when you walk into the Death Valley and look at
your foot steps, you will notice the small flowers blooming here and there.
Lord said; 'I have
loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with loving kindness.' Blessing
of the Desert and ever lasting love that flows there, certainly are on us also.
Sometime we won't even notice the God's continuous truth
because it is so mighty. We can not see things clearly
because our mind is
obscured when we faces many obstacles in the desert. Yet,
for sure, the God's truth and blessings are there.
Jeremiah lived
extremity of the hardship. However, he fulfilled his mission in the desert.
That is because he was captured by the God's love and truth. His work became
valuable not only in his generation but also for the next generation.
For you all, we
too may have to go through the Desert, may be in different ways,
like people of the Israel and Jeremiah have done. But do
not be discouraged. For sure, the God will fulfill us with his blessings in the
desert and keeps giving us his love and truth even in the midst of the desert.
We will find that flower of God's love and truth that will blossom in the
desert. Lets us pray.

１）エレミヤ１３章２３節、２章３２節、５章７節、８節、２２章１３節を読みましょう。このような国の状況の中で神に仕えて、彼らの罪を厳しく指摘し、敵国に降伏しなければならない（エレミヤ３８章２節）と伝えなければならない預言者エレミヤの気持ちはどんなものだったかと思いますか。
２）エレミヤは民から殺されそうになり（エレミヤ１１章１９節、３８章４節）、のろわれます（エレミヤ１５章１０節）。また郷里の人達からも命を狙われ（エレミヤ１１章２１節）、身内や親類からも追われます（エレミヤ１２章６節）。また妻や家族をもつことも許されませんでした（エレミヤ１６章２節）。このような中で彼は預言者としての使命をなしていきますが、民は彼の言葉に耳を傾けることはありませんでした。もし、あなたがエレミヤでしたらこの任を耐えることができますか。
３）この過酷な状況の中でエレミヤは神の言葉を喜び、それを楽しみました（エレミヤ１５章１６節）。またその語るべき言葉を心の内に押さえておくことはできませんでした（エレミヤ２０章９節）。エレミヤにとって神様の言葉に聞き、それを伝えるという使命はどんな意味をもっていたのでしょうか。
４）エレミヤ３１章２節-３節には「つるぎを逃れて生き残った民は、荒野で恵みを得た。イスラエルが安息を求めた時、主は遠くから彼に現れた。わたしは限りなき愛をもってあなたを愛している。それゆえ、わたしは絶えずあなたに真実を尽くしてきた」という御言葉があります。荒野で恵みを得るということはどんな意味がありますか。イスラエルの民が出エジプトしてから４０年もの間、荒野をさまよった時に彼らは荒野でどんな恵みを神様からいただいたでしょうか。
５）エレミヤは過酷な状況の中を預言者としてその使命にいきました。彼が生きた荒野で彼はどんな恵みを得ましたか。あなたは神様が限りない愛をもって自分を愛してくださっていること、絶えず真実を尽くして今日まで導いてくださっていることを知っていますか。どうしたら荒野で主の恵みを見出すことができますか。
