『自分を見て賢いと思ってはならない、主を恐れて、悪を離れよ。そうすれば、あなたの身を健やかにし、あなたの骨に元気を与える』（箴言３章７節、８節）
私達が自分を見て賢いと思う時、その時、私達の心はどのような状態なのでしょうか。その時、私達は明らかに「過信」しているでしょう。自分の知性に過剰な自信をもっていることでしょう。しかし、同時にその時に私達が忘れていることがあります。そうです、それは「主」です。その時、私達は完全に主を忘れています。主を忘れる時に何が起こるのでしょうか。その時に私達は足をすくわれるのです。その時、私達はとても危ういところに立つことになるのです。

祝福は上から下に注がれます 箴言３章７節、８節 ２０１４年１月２６日
７自分を見て賢いと思ってはならない、主を恐れて、悪を離れよ。８そうすれば、あなたの身を健やかにし、あなたの骨に元気を与える。
シリーズとしてお話しています箴言を今朝も見ていきましょう。今日の箇所はとても短いものです。しかし、そこには私達が受け取ることができる大切な知恵が含まれています。今日はまず最初にこの箴言の言葉の前半部分である『７自分を見て賢いと思ってはならない、主を恐れて、悪を離れよ』という言葉をみてまいりましょう。
いつもお話しておりますように、ソロモンはイスラエル三代目の王で、彼がその王位に就く時に神様から何でもあなたの願いを叶えてあげようと言われました。それに対して善悪を知ることができるように、民を治めることができるために聞きわける心をくださいと彼は願い（Ⅰ列王記３章１１節－１２節）、神様はそのために必要な天来の知恵を彼に与えたのです。それは他の者が持ちえないようなもので、その彼の知恵がこの箴言にも記されているのです。誰が見てもソロモンは確かに賢い王なのです。しかし、そのお墨付きの知者ソロモンが「自分を見て賢いと思ってはならない」とここに記しているのです。
私達が自分を見て賢いと思う時、その時、私達の心はどのような状態なのでしょうか。その時、私達は明らかに「過信」しているでしょう。自分の知性に過剰な自信をもっていることでしょう。しかし、同時にその時に私達が忘れていることがあります。そうです、それは「主」です。その時、私達は完全に主を忘れています。主を忘れる時に何が起こるのでしょうか。その時に私達は足をすくわれるのです。その時、私達はとても危ういところに立つことになるのです。
「自分を見て賢いと思ってはならない」。ソロモンはこの言葉をどのような思いで書いたのでしょうか。もしかしたらその時、一つの出来事を考えていたかもしれません。それは遠い国の出来事ではなく、彼にとって一番、身近な父、イスラエル二代目の王、ダビデです。
人は過去の色々な経験を断片的に覚えているもので、私の記憶の中に小学生の頃の思い出があります。栃木県の小さな町にある小さな教会、時は春先、ポカポカとするような一日。学校から帰り、いつものようにひとしきり遊び、しばし家でうとうとと眠ります。一時間ほど経ってからでしょうか、はっと目覚めると部屋の中の襖（ふすま）が夕陽でオレンジ色に変わっています。そんな時、一瞬「ここはどこだろう、今はいつなのだろう」と考え、少しづつ状況が分かってきます。一時の眠りでしたが、その休息により心身は軽く、目をこすりながら外に出てみると空一面がオレンジ色に染まっています。暑くもなく、寒くもなく夕暮れの風が体に気持ちよく、しばし陽が沈んでいく光景を眺めていました。
旧約聖書サムエル記下１１章１節－２節にはこのような記録が残されています『1春になって、王たちが戦いに出るに及んで、ダビデはヨアブおよび自分と共にいる家来たち、並びにイスラエルの全軍をつかわした。彼らはアンモンの人々を滅ぼし、ラバを包囲した。しかしダビデはエルサレムにとどまっていた。2さて、ある日の夕暮、ダビデは床から起き出て、王の家の屋上を歩いていたが、屋上から、ひとりの女がからだを洗っているのを見た。その女は非常に美しかった』。
春の夕暮れ、ソロモンの父ダビデはしばしのうたた寝をし、床から起き上がりました。その時、既にイスラエルの王となっておりましたダビデは神様に祝福され、国力が増し、国政は内外ともに安定していました。戦があれば連勝し、その時にも他民族との戦（いくさ）が続いていたのですが、自分が戦地に赴くまでもないと、自分の家来を戦地に派遣し、彼はしばしまどろみ、そして外の空気を吸うためでしょうか、王家の屋上に出てきたのです。彼が眼下を見渡せば、そこには自分が治める国の民が住む家々が全て見渡せるのです。
数年前にエルサレムに行かせていただきました時に、心に残りました場所の一つにこのダビデが建てたイスラエルという国の原型となった街の遺跡がありました。そこは「City of David」と呼ばれる遺跡で、まさしく今、お話しています彼が見下ろした家々がかつてそこにあったという遺跡です。
私はそこに行って初めてダビデの治めたイスラエルという国のスケールが分かりました。「国」と言われますと私達はある程度の大きさをイメージするかもしれませんが、そこは山というよりも丘の傾斜であり、その傾斜に小さな町があり、その町を城壁が囲んでいたのです。それがイスラエルの始まりであり、この猫の額のような場所で起きたことが聖書には記されているのです。このダビデの町の後方にはアブラハムがイサクを捧げたモリヤの山があり（山というより丘なのですが）、そこに彼の息子のソロモンが神殿を建て、今日、そこには黄金のドームが建っています。
ダビデの住居は一番、高い自分の街が全て見晴らせる場所にあります。なぜ私がこのダビデの町が印象に残ったかと言いますと、地元のユダヤ人がガイドとなってくれるこのダビデの町のツアーに参加したのですが、そのツアーが始まる場所がこの斜面の一番上で、そこから説明を受けながらツアーは下に、すなわち当時のイスラエルの庶民が住んでいた所に下っていくのです。その一番高いところこそが、かつてダビデの住居があり、まさしくダビデはあの日、昼寝から目覚めた時にそこに立ち、階下の町を眺めたのです。そこに立ちましたら本当に分かったのです。ここからなら自分の街が一望できる、それこそ夕餉の支度をしている人や洋服を干している人達の表情まで見えると。
そして、その時に思ったのです。歴史に「もし」はないと言われますが、「もしダビデの住居がここになかったら」、すなわち、彼の町を見渡すことができるこの場所にダビデの住居がなければ、ダビデは先に読みました女、すなわち自分の部下の妻、バテシバが身体を洗っているのを見ることがなかったかもしれないということです。
ご存知のように、ダビデはこの後、バテシバを自分の家に呼び、そこで関係を持ち、彼女はダビデの子を宿します。この最初の子は死にますが、後に彼女との間に生まれる子こそがこの箴言を書いたソロモンになります。もしソロモンがいなければエルサレムに神殿や城壁は建たなかったでしょうし、今日の神殿の丘や嘆きの壁もなく、聖書の中にこの箴言はなかったでしょう。確かにそこにダビデが立たなければイスラエルの歴史は変わったのです。
ロサンゼルスにはビバリーヒルズという場所があります。言うまでもない全米有数の高級住宅街です。この地名にはヒルズ、丘という言葉がつきます。私達の母国、日本の六本木には六本木ヒルズというビルがあり、そこにオフィスを構えることはお金持ちのステイタスとなっているといいます。「丘」すなわち、誰よりも高いところに住む、高いところにとどまるということは今も昔も人を惹きつけているようです。私達は今も昔も高い所に住み、階下に家々や人間を見下ろす場所を好むものです。
ダビデは毎日、そこで眼下を見下ろしたのでしょう。何をしてもうまくいく日々、隣国と戦えばいつも勝利。それらは全てそれらの祝福と守りは神様の恵みによるということをダビデは彼は知っていたことでしょう。しかし、そうしている内に、彼の心の中に過信が生まれたのでしょう。俺の戦略の前に敵はどうすることもできない。もう、俺が戦地に出向くまでもない、この眼下にある民は皆、この俺の国政を喜んでいる。その時にあんなに神様を慕っていた彼の心から神様がいなくなりました。主を恐れ、悪を離れるということが完全に頭から消えました。その瞬間こそが、彼が水浴するバテシバに声をかけた瞬間です。
事の顛末は皆さんのご存知のとおりです。部下の妻、バテシバと関係をもち、彼女が妊娠したことが分かるとそれを隠すために嘘偽りを並べ、最後にはこれらのことを隠ぺいするために、彼は忠臣な部下を殺害し、彼女を自分の妻としたのです。
私はこれらのことを思いめぐらしました。ダビデは神に愛され、神を慕い愛したイスラエル史上、最も優れた王です。現在のイスラエルの国旗にある星はダビデの星です。彼はユダヤ人が最も尊敬する王なのです。彼は今も愛される王です。その彼がなぜこのような過ちを犯してしまったということ、それはなぜか。とてもシンプルです。彼は高い所に居たのです。そこに居ることにより、彼は神を愛する王でありながら、いつの間にか自分を過信したのです。そして、その過信の根っこに何があるかといいますと、それこそが「自らを見て賢い」と思う思いだったのです。
この世界には変わることのない、神の定めたもうた自然の法則があります。それは高いところに向かって水が流れることはないという動かされることのない法則です。水は必ず低いところに向かって流れていくということです。
神様はこの世界をそのように造られました。そして、それは霊の世界でも同じようです。知恵とは「恵みを知る」と書きます。「あの人は知恵がある人だ」と周りの者が言う時がありますが、それを言われた者はそのことで自分の知性を喜ぶのではなくて、その知恵は全て神が与えてくれた恵みだと神様に感謝することが知性と向き合う時に私達がもつべき心です。
ダビデの生涯、そのほとんどの時、彼は自ら低くして、神様の恵みを存分にいただき、それは与えられているものだということを承知していました。しかし、あの春先の夕暮れ、その時、彼はこのことを一瞬、見失ってしまったのです。そして、そのことによって彼が後に支払わなければならない代価は大きなものだったのです。
イエス様はかつて幼子を呼び寄せて、弟子達の真ん中に立たせて言われました「よく聞きなさい。心をいれかえて幼な子のようにならなければ、天国にはいることはできないであろう。4この幼な子のように自分を低くする者が、天国でいちばん偉いのである』（マタイ１８章３節－４節）。このイエスの言葉はその町の一番高い所にいたダビデとは対照的に、彼が眼下に見下ろしていたイスラエルの低き所、その路地裏で遊んでいる幼子達の姿を思い起こさせます。彼らが住んでいた場所はまさしく低き所でした。それは彼らの心の低さをも表していました。彼らの内には何も誇るものはなく、その心は純粋で空っぽですので、彼らの上には十二分に神様の恵みが注がれたのです。そして、そのような者達をイエス様は天国でいちばん偉いと評価されたのです。
私達の生涯もダビデのそれと同じです。日々、信仰者の歩みをしていたとしてもダビデのように一瞬、己が賢さに溺れる時、足をすくわれるのです。イエス・キリストご自身が神のかたちであられながら、人の姿をとるまでに低きところに来てくださったという聖書の言葉がありますように、私達も自らに過信するのではなく、低き所にとどまり、それゆえに自らの身も心も守り、神様が私達に日々、注いでくださる天来の祝福と恵みを存分にいただこうではありませんか。二つ目のことをお話します。
ダビデは王ですから、自分がしたことをなきものにすることができたでしょう。しかし、ある時、彼の側近であるナタンが彼の前に立ち、ダビデがした過ちを彼の面前、大胆に指摘したのです。ダビデはこのナタンの指摘を戯言（たわごと）とし、彼を葬ることもできたことでしょう。しかし、ダビデの偉大さは、そのナタンの指摘を受け入れて、神の前に深刻な悔い改めをするのです。その時の彼の心境が詩篇３２篇に記されています。
1そのとががゆるされ、その罪がおおい消される者はさいわいである。2主によって不義を負わされず、その霊に偽りのない人はさいわいである。 3わたしが自分の罪を言いあらわさなかった時は、ひねもす苦しみうめいたので、わたしの骨はふるび衰えた。4あなたのみ手が昼も夜も、わたしの上に重かったからである。わたしの力は、夏のひでりによってかれるように、かれ果てた。 5わたしは自分の罪をあなたに知らせ、自分の不義を隠さなかった。わたしは言った、「わたしのとがを主に告白しよう」と。その時あなたはわたしの犯した罪をゆるされた（詩篇３２篇１節－５節）。
彼が自分のしてしまったことをどうにか隠そうとあらゆる画策をしていた日々、果てにはバテシバの夫、ウリアを殺害し、そのことを隠し通していた時、ダビデは眠れぬ日々を過ごしたことでしょう。彼が国一番の寝室に身を横たえたとしても彼の心が休まることはなかったでしょう。いいえ、心だけではありません、彼の骨はふるび衰え、彼は苦しみうめいたと告白しています。その力は失われ、それは夏のひでりによって枯れるように枯れ果てたというのです。
まさしくその様はソロモンが書いた今日の御言葉に通じるものです。７自分を見て賢いと思ってはならない、主を恐れて、悪を離れよ。８そうすれば、あなたの身を健やかにし、あなたの骨に元気を与える。
以前、テレビ・ドラマや映画で悪人を演じる役者の苦悩というものが書かれた記事を読んだことがあります。ドラマ、映画には悪役が出てきます。中には人とは思えない悪の限りをする極悪人が登場します。そして、その非道な人間を役者さんが演じます。中にはこの役回りを数か月演じなければならない役者さんもいます。「役作り」という言葉がありますが、彼らは良き演技者となるべく、数か月の間、その極悪人になりきります。そうしますと日々、演技ではありますが悪の限りをしていると実際の日常生活も苦しくなるというのです。自分が演じているその悪に心と身体が反応してしまうのでしょう、それゆえに体調さえも崩すと言うのです。実際のことではなく、悪に生き、ましてやそれを己が心に隠し通すというような演技ですらこのような影響を私達は受けるのですから、ダビデがそうであったように、ソロモンが書き記していますように、それは私達の心身に耐えがたき苦悩を与えるものなのです。ですから、ダビデは言います。
『1そのとが（罪）がゆるされ、その罪がおおい消される者はさいわいである。2主によって不義を負わされず、その霊に偽りのない人はさいわいである』
彼は自ら犯した罪、それをいつまでもその心に隠し持っていることの辛さを経験しました。それがある限り、どんなに旨いものを食べても、砂を食べているようなものだったでしょう。自らの心を楽しませるようなことをいくらしても、そのことは彼の心にいつもどっしりと重くのしかかっていたことでしょう。ですからその根源となっている罪がゆるされることの幸いを言っているのです。
ビル・ハイベルという牧師が書いています。彼はある時、某空港で飛行機を待っていました。その時にまだ幼い兄弟と思われる子供が殴り合いの喧嘩を始めたというのです。なんとか彼はその喧嘩をやめさせようと、まずその子の親たちを探しますが、周りにいません。彼らの喧嘩はエスカレートしていきます。先ほど、「幼子のようにならなければ」とお話しましたが、その幼子とて人間です、その心には当然、問題があります。そうこうしている内に自分の搭乗時間がきてしまい、空港職員にその子たちをしっかりと見守るように言い残し飛行機に飛び乗ります。機内で座席につきますが、あの兄弟の顔が忘れられません。あの子たちはどんな家庭環境に暮らしているのだろう。親はいるのだろうか。彼らはこれからどうなっていくのだろう。次から次へと色々な思いがわいてき、その時に動かされることのない確信と覚悟がビル牧師に与えられたというのです。それは「教会の使命」というものでした。
そう教会の使命とはダビデが悩み苦しみ、この幼子達の心に既に芽を出している罪と取り組むという使命でした。この子達の喧嘩は周りの大人達によって互いに引き離されることにより収束に向かったことでしょう。しかし、彼らの心に問題があるのなら、彼らは再びそのことを繰り返すでしょう。大人となり、今日と同じことを彼らが誰かとすれば、法によって裁かれるでしょう。状況によっては刑罰を受けるでしょう。そこまでは政府や法律がなすことができます。しかし、その先は政府や法律がどうこうすることができないものです。なぜなら、それらの問題を生み出しているのは私達の心にある罪の問題であり、罪は赦されるべきものだからです。
神に近くにいたダビデさえも姦淫、虚偽、殺人の罪を犯したのです。それほどまでに罪というのは抗しえない力をもって私達に臨んでくるのです。その罪の問題を見つめ、それを取り扱うのが教会なのです。そして、その罪に対する解決として神様は私達にイエス・キリストの十字架を与えてくださっているのです。
この使命についてコリント第一の手紙１章にパウロは書いています。『17いったい、キリストがわたしをつかわされたのは、バプテスマを授けるためではなく、福音を宣べ伝えるためであり、しかも知恵の言葉を用いずに宣べ伝えるためであった。それは、キリストの十字架が無力なものになってしまわないためなのである』
ダビデは自らを賢いと思うことによって罪を犯しました。そのことによって骨が古びて枯れるというようなところを通りました。そのダビデより１０００年後に生きたパウロはここで、イエス・キリストの十字架こそがこの罪の問題を解決する、その十字架を伝えることこそが自分の使命だと言いました。しかし、その時に彼は自分の培った知恵の言葉は用いないというのです。そのようなもので十字架に近づくことはできない、そのルートで十字架に近づくのなら、十字架は全く無力なものとなってしまうからだと言ったのです。そしてパウロは続けてこう書きました。
『18だれも自分を欺いてはならない。もしあなたがたのうちに、自分がこの世の知者だと思う人がいるなら、その人は知者になるために愚かになるがよい。19なぜなら、この世の知恵は、神の前では愚かなものだからである』（コリント第一の手紙３章１８節－１９節）。
お気づきになると思います。このパウロの言葉はソロモンの言葉に戻っていくのです。『７自分を見て賢いと思ってはならない、主を恐れて、悪を離れよ。８そうすれば、あなたの身を健やかにし、あなたの骨に元気を与える』。
私達が自らの賢さに留まるのならイエス様の十字架は分かりません。そのアプローチでは十字架にいたることができないのです。聖書の言葉によりますのなら、私達が大切にしているこの世の知恵は神の前には愚かなものだからです。
ですから私達はこの朝、己が心をもう一度、見つめ直してみましょう。私達は高き所に立ち、己が賢さだけを誇り、ダビデと同じような過ちを犯そうとしていませんか。その賢さによってはイエス・キリストの十字架に近づくこともできないのです。ですから私達は自分が築きあげた高き所から下に下りてまいりましょう。神のかたちであられながら、人の姿をとられ私達のもとに来られたと言われるイエス様と同じ所にわが身も心も置きましょう。その時に全てのものが見えてくるからです。その時に神様の恵みと祝福が余すところなく私達の上に注がれ、十字架の力、すなわち私達の罪の赦しが成就するのです。お祈りしましょう。
“Blessing flows from High to Low.”

Proverbs 3:7, 8
“Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.” (Proverbs 3:7, 8)
Let’s take a look again this morning at the Proverbs that has been looked at as a series. Today’s scripture is very short. However, important wisdom we should learn is included in it. First, let’s look at the word, “Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil.” that is the first half of the scripture today.
As I have always told you, Solomon, the third king of Israel, was told by God that any wish would be granted when he took his throne. For this, Solomon asked God to give him a discerning heart to govern His people, and to distinguish between right and wrong. And God gave him the heavenly wisdom which was necessary for him to carry out his wish. (I Kings 3:9 -12). Solomon’s wisdom could not be matched by anyone’s and his wisdom was revealed in the Proverbs. King Solomon is certainly wise as anyone can see. But, Solomon, whose wisdom is endorsed by everyman, wrote here, “Do not be wise in your own eyes.”
When we think that we are wise, what are our states of mind? At that time, obviously we would be overconfident. We would have an excessive confidence in our own intelligence. At the same time, we may forget one thing. Yes, it is “the Lord.” At that time, we forget the Lord completely. What happens when we forget the Lord? We may fall with a sudden attack. At that time, we are standing on very dangerous ground.
“Do not be wise in your own eyes.” With what thought did Solomon write this word? He might be thinking about the event that happened not in a distant place, but on his own father, David, who was the second king of Israel.
People remember a variety of experiences in the past in fragments. In my memory, there is an experience when I was an elementary school boy. The place was a small church in a small town in Tochigi Prefecture, and the season was early spring. On one warm day, I returned from school, and as usual played around my home that was the church, and then I slept drowsily at home for a while. An hour or more later, I woke up startled to see sliding doors in the room (blinds) had changed to orange color in the setting sun. At that time, I thought for a moment, “Where am I? What time is it now?” and then I began to realize the situation little by little. It was a temporary sleep, but my mind and body were made light by the rest. When I went out while rubbing my eyes, the sky was dyed orange. The evening breeze was pleasant to my body; it wasn’t hot or cold. I was looking at the sunset for a while.
In II Samuel 11:1-2 of the Old Testament, it is written as follows: “In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war, David sent Joab out with the king’s men and the whole Israelite army. They destroyed the Ammonites and besieged the Rabbah. But David remained in Jerusalem. One evening, David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful.”
Dusk of spring, the father of Solomon, David, took a nap for a while and got up from his bed. David, at that time, already had been the king of Israel being blessed by God. The national strength had been increasing, and his government was stable, both inside and outside. The country was in winning streak whenever they faced the enemies. Actually, a war with other ethnic groups (the battle) was going on at that time, but he himself did not go to the war. Instead, he sent his subordinates to the battle front. He slumbered often. One day, after a nap, he might go out for some outside air, walking around the roof of his palace, where he could overlook all the houses of his people underneath.
Several years ago, I had a chance to visit Jerusalem. There is one place in particular that remains in my memory. There were ruins of the city that became the prototype of the country of Israel built by King David. The ruins are called “City of David”, where there was once a palace from which David looked down to see the houses of his people, as I have just mentioned.
Looking at the ruins, I realized for the first time by being there, the original scale of the country of Israel that was ruled by King David. We might imagine the size of some degree to be called a “country”, but there is a slope of a hill rather than a mountain, and there is a small town on the slope that is surrounded by walls. It was the beginning of Israel, and what happened in the place like the forehead of a cat had been recorded in the Bible. There is a mountain of Moriah, where Abraham offered Isaac, on the rear side of the City of David. David’s son, Solomon, built the temple of the Lord there, but today, the mosque called the Golden Dome is there instead.
David’s palace was located at the top of the hill where he could see all the sight of his city. The reason why I was impressed by the City of David is the setup of the city. I joined a tour of the city conducted by a local Jewish guide. The tour started from the top of the slope, and went down to the place where the people of Israel lived at that time, while the guide explained about the city. Through the tour, I could visualized the palace of David on the top of the slope, where indeed David viewed the city on that day after waking up from his nap. By standing up there, I realized that David could see all the sight of the city, all the activities of his people, like a person drying clothes and a person getting ready for supper.
And I thought at that time, though it is said that there is no “if” in history, that if there were no palace of David, that is to say, if there were no place of David on the top of the slope where it was possible to overlook the City of David, including the house of Bathsheba, who was a wife of David’s subordinate, he could not see Bathsheba bathing.
As you know, after this, David called Bathsheba to his palace, where they had a relationship, and she became pregnant with a child of David. This first child had died, but later Solomon was born between them, who wrote the Proverbs. If there were no Solomon, there was most likely no temple or walls in Jerusalem. The Temple Mount and the Wailing Wall would not exist today. There would be no Proverbs in the Bible. Indeed, if David did not stand on the hill top, the history of Israel would completely be different.
There is a place called Beverly Hills in Los Angeles. Needless to say, it is a leading high-class residential area in the United States. The word, “hills“, is attached to this place. In our home country, Japan, there is a building called Roppongi Hills in Roppongi, Tokyo. Setting up an office there has been the status for the rich. Living on a “hill”, that means to live in a higher place, seems to attract people now as well as in the past. People, in general, prefer to live in a higher place, looking down on other people, houses, and downstairs.
Every day, David would look down to see the city. Every day, things went well no matter what he did. His country always won when they fought against the neighboring countries. David would have known that all that protection and blessing were due to the grace of the Lord. However, in the meantime, overconfidence would have been born in the mind of David. His enemies could not do anything against David’s strategy. So, David thought that he did not even need to go to the war himself. And all the people under his eyes were gladly supporting his government. At that moment, God disappeared from his heart, even though he was yearning for God so much before. The word “fear the Lord and shun evil” was lost from his mind completely. Indeed, that moment was the moment when David saw Bathsheba bathing.
The whole story is as you know well. David had a relationship with Bathsheba, who was a wife of David’s subordinate. When Bathsheba became pregnant, David tried to hide it. Finally, he killed her husband, who was his loyal subordinate, and made her his own wife.
I have contemplated these. David was loved by God, and he also loved God. He was the best king in the history of Israel. The national flag of Israel carries the Star of David. He is the most respected king of Israel by the Jewish people. He is the king who is loved even now. Why did such a man make a mistake like this? The answer is very simple. Because he was staying on a high place. By staying there, while being a king who loved God, he became overconfident. And the root of the overconfidence was a thought that “he was wise in his own eyes.”
There is one thing that does not change in this world. That is a law of nature set by God. It is a law that will not be changed that no water can flow towards the higher place. In other words, water always flows toward the lower place.
God made this world that way. And so is the spiritual world. In Japanese, the characters for “wisdom” are written as “knowing the grace“. Sometimes, people say, “that person is a man of wisdom”, but the person who is called a man of wisdom should not rejoice in his own intelligence, but should be thankful for the grace of God, for his wisdom has been given by God. That is the right attitude toward being intelligent.
Most of the time, David lowered himself before God in his life. And he received plenty of grace from God. He knew that the grace was given by God. However, that evening of early spring, he lost his sight on this for a moment. As the consequence, the price he had to pay later was very high.
Jesus once called a little child and had him stand among the disciples and said, “I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 18:3-4) This word of Jesus reminds me of the little children who were playing in the back alley of the lower part of a town in Israel, in contrast with David who was on the highest point of his city. Indeed, that was a low place. That also reflexes the low states of their hearts. They had nothing to be proud of. Their hearts were pure and empty. For that, God poured plenty of grace to their hearts. And Jesus recognized those little children to be the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
Our life is also similar to that of David. Even if we live with faith as Christians day by day, we might suddenly fall like David, if we momentarily become conceited in our own wisdom. There is a passage in the Bible that says, Jesus Christ, though being in the form of God, lowered himself and became a human being. Therefore, we also should make ourselves lower, without overconfidence, in order to protect our bodies and minds. And let us receive the abundant blessing and grace from God every day.
Now, I would like to tell you about the second point.
David, because he was the king, would have been able to wipe out the whole matter. However, Nathan, who was a prophet and the closest attendant of David stood up in front of David and bravely pointed out the grave mistake that David had made. David could have ignored Nathan’s advice, and could have even killed him. But David accepted Nathan’s advice, and seriously repented before God. That is the greatness of David. His mental state at the time was written in Psalm 32 as follows:
“Blessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord does not count against him and in whose sprit is no deceit. When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer. Then I acknowledged my sin to you and I did not cover up my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord” – and you forgave the guilt of my sin.” (Psalm 32:1-5)
During the days that David was trying to hide his grave mistake and ended up killing Uriah, the husband of Bathsheba in order to conceal the secret, David would have spent sleepless nights. Even if he laid his body in the best bedroom in the country, his heart would not have been restful. No, not only his heart, but his bones worn out, and he was groaning all day long. He confessed that his power was lost, and his strength was withered like a plant in summer drought.
Indeed, the condition of David at that time relates to the today’s scripture: “Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.” (Proverbs 3:7, 8)
Lately, I have read an article about the agony and distress of an actor who plays a villain in movies and television dramas. Actors play roles of villains in dramas and movies. Sometimes actors have to play roles of outrageously bad people, being inhumane, cruel, and evil. In some cases, the actors must play the roles for several months on the stage. There is a word “role making”. This means to concentrate in becoming a villain for several months for better performance. Then the actors feel like villains in their daily lives, thus becoming anguished and distressed. As a result, their physical conditions deteriorate in response to the evil roles that they play. Although it is a performance, just acting to be evil and hiding wrong doings will affect them seriously, as in the case of David. As Solomon wrote in Proverbs, an evil conduct gives us unbearable distress in our mind and body.
So, David wrote in Psalm 32: “Blessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord does not count against him and in whose sprit is no deceit.”
David experienced the agony and distress caused by his mistake and hiding it in his heart. As long as he was in that condition, he would have felt like eating dirt, even if it was delicious food. And even if he tried to entertain himself, he could not enjoy it because his heart was heavily laden with agony. That is why he was saying here that he is blessed because his transgressions are forgiven.
A pastor named Bill Hybels wrote as follows: One day, he was waiting for the plane at an airport. Children who look like very young brothers started fighting seriously. The pastor was trying to stop the fighting, and looked around for their parents, but he could not find them. The fighting was escalating. Earlier, I talked about children, saying, “we must become like little children”, but little children are also human beings. So, of course they have problems. In the meantime, his boarding time was up, and he had to go. He asked the airport staffs to look after the children, and jumped on the airplane. After seating himself in the cabin, he could not forget the faces of the brothers. He was wondering about what kind of home environment they live in, who are their parents, how they are going to be in the future, etc. At that time, the pastor was given a firm conviction. It was “the mission of the Church”.
The mission of the Church is to tackle the problem of sins that tormented David, and that has already sprouted in the mind of those young children who were fighting each other at the airport. The fighting would have been stopped by the surrounding adults, but if their problems remain in their hearts, they will fight again. After becoming adults, if they fight against others, they might be punished by the law. Under some circumstances, they might get some sentences. Up to this point, the government and the law can handle the situation, but after this point, they are powerless to cope with the problems. Because the fundamental problem is our sins in our hearts, and the sins need to be forgiven.
Even David, who was so close to God, committed adultery, made false witness, and committed murder. To that extent, sin is facing us with a formidable power that we cannot resist. The mission of the Church is to face the problem of sin, and handle it properly. For that mission, God gave us the cross of Jesus Christ as the solution for the problem.
About this mission, Paul wrote in I Corinthians 1:17 as follows: “For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel – not with the words of human wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.”
David committed sin by thinking himself wise. For that, he went through the agony as his bones were withered. Here, Paul who lived 1,000 years after David had lived, said that only the cross of Jesus Christ is able to solve the problem of sin, and his mission is to preach the gospel of the cross of Jesus. Also, he said he does not use his own wisdom in preaching, in order not to nullify the power of the cross. You cannot approach the cross with human wisdom. That will completely void the power of the cross.
And Paul continued to write in I Corinthians 3:18-19 as follows: “Do not deceive yourselves. If any one of you thinks he is wise by the standard of this age, he should become a “fool” so that he may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight”.
As you notice, these words of Paul come back to Solomon’s words: “Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.” (Proverbs 3:7, 8)
If we remain in our own wisdom, we cannot understand the cross of Jesus. We cannot approach it with our own wisdom, because according to the Bible, “the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight“.
So, this morning, once again, let us re-examine our hearts. Are we standing on the high place? Are we proud of our own wisdom? Thus making the similar mistake as David did? We cannot come close to the cross of Jesus with our own wisdom. Therefore, we should come down from the high place that we have built. Let us put our body and soul on the same ground where Jesus came down to us as a human being, though he is God. Then, we begin to see everything clearly. And the blessing and grace of God will pour on us abundantly, and the power of the cross, that is the forgiveness of our sins will be fulfilled.
