最近、我が子と向き合うことによって気がついてきたことがあります。そして、その気づきは確信となりつつあります。それは子供達が勉強にしても、音楽にしても、スポーツにしても、今、習得しようとしていることを彼らが自分のためにそれをしているとするのならなんと空しいことだろうかということです。
しかし、それらのものの最終的な目標がそれらを通して少しでも神様の栄光を表すことができるものとなるのなら何と素晴らしいことだろうということです。この国で子供を育てていますと、親たちは自分はお抱え運転手かと思わされることがあります。スポーツや習い事や様々な経験をさせるために私達はＡ地点からＢ地点へ、そしてそこからまたＡに戻り、Ｃに行く。それは楽なことではなくて、もう止めてしまおうかと、どんな親も考えるかと思います。その時にフッと頭によぎります。「何のためにこのことをしているのだろうか」と。
その時に思うのです。このことを通して少しでも将来、神様のお役に立つことができたらと。すなわち、心から願うのは、彼らがサイエンスが好きでその方面に進むのなら、そのことについて全力で臨み、与えられたものをもって神の栄光をあらわす。何かのスポーツに没頭して何かを習得したのなら、それを通して神の栄光を表す。何かの楽器の弾き方を学び、その技術を得たのなら、それを通して神の栄光をあらわす。日本語や英語を通して、神様の栄光を表す。これらのことを通して自分が与えられたもの、受けたものをまず神様に捧げる、こう思いますのなら、ハンドルを握ることも喜びとなります。そして、そのように生きることこそが、今日、お話してきましたように彼らの祝福にもなるのです。

使命：命の使い方

先週は『自分を見て賢いと思ってはならない、主を恐れて、悪を離れよ。そうすれば、あなたの身を健やかにし、あなたの骨に元気を与える』（箴言３章７節、８節）という言葉を見ました。そして、今日見てまいります言葉はその後に続く『あなたの財産と、すべての産物の初なりをもって主をあがめよ。そうすれば、あなたの倉は満ちて余り、あなたの酒ぶねは新しい酒であふれる』（箴言３章９節、１０節）という言葉です。
これら二つの言葉は互いに並んでいますが全く関係のないもののようにも見えます。実際に箴言を読みますとお気づきになるかと思うのですが、箴言の一節一節の言葉はほとんど、それだけで独立して理解できるものばかりです。
しかし、この二つの言葉に限っては互いに関連があるように思われます。すなわち、私達が神様を崇めるためには、私達の賢さには限界があり、私達は神様以上のものではなく、神の前には全く力のないもの、知恵のないものであるという自己認識があってはじめて、「神様こそ崇められるお方、このお方こそが最善のものを受けるにふさわしいお方」だという思いにいたるからです。
先日、いつも行っているジムのロッカーにかけておいた鍵が壊されて、中にあるものが盗まれました。さいわい財布や免許証は持っていかれませんでしたので、最低限の被害であり、神様に感謝しました。その時に思いました。一応、ロッカーに鍵はかけ、私なりに自分の所有物は守っていると思っていたのです。しかし、そんな鍵は簡単に壊され、所持品が盗まれました。この経験を通してあらためて思いました。自らの力だけで自分自身を守ること、家族を守ること、教会を守ることは不可能であり、まさしく詩篇が記している『主が町を守られるのでなければ、守る者のさめているのはむなしい』（詩篇１２７篇１節）という言葉は本当だということを。「家庭を守っています」なんてことは、自分がそう思っているだけで、その背後にはどれだけ大きな神様の見守りがあることかと。そう考えますと、私達を日々見守り、祝福してくださっている神様をどのようにして崇めることができるのかということに必然的に私達の思いがいたるのです。どのようにしたらこのような自分を通して神様を崇めることができるのかと考えるのです。
先日、ある本を読んでいましたら仕事をよくこなしていく人は「優先順位」というものをよく心得ている人だと書かれていました。すなわち、その人とは自分が今、何をすべきかということを、よく分かっていて、まず何から手をつけていけばいいのかということをよく心得ている人だということです。
私達の人生というものが一日、そしてまた一日と、その繰り返しの集大成であるとしますならば、私達が毎日、何を優先して生きていくのかということは、とても大切なことです。なぜなら私達が優先してきたものが、実は本来そうすべきものではなかった、もっと大切なものがあったということが後になって分かり、唖然としてしまうというようなこと、また、色々なものに手はつけるけれど、どれも中途半端で結局は何も成し遂げることができないというようなことが私達には度々起きるからです。
たとえば、私達の多くは仕事をしています。一に仕事、ニに仕事、三に仕事、それだけで人生を送ることは可能です。確かにそうしなければならない状況というものもあるでしょう。しかし、私達が知っておかなければならないことは仕事だけに集中している間に、自分の知らない所で色々なことが静かに進行していることがあるということです。
「私は全てを注ぎ込んで会社に貢献してきたのだから、この会社の一つのフロアぐらいは私の汗と涙の結晶なのだから、それと引き換えに私が支払った家庭への犠牲によって現在、生じているこの問題をなんとかしてくれ」と会社に願ったところで「そうですね、それは大変なことでした、社としては全力であなたの犠牲から生じた問題を修復するために専門家を送ります」という会社はまずありません。
私達の生き方は人それぞれ違いますし、それは各々が選択すべきものであり、他者がどうこう言うことではないということも心得ています。しかし、私達にとってやはりまず耳を傾けるべきことは聖書の言葉ではないでしょうか。そして、そこにこそ私達が心に刻むべき優先順位があるのではないでしょうか。
もし、私達がその聖書が示すところの優先順位をしっかりともっているなら、とても安易に聞こえるかもしれませんが私達の生活はとても楽になります。その基準に従って物事を決めていけばいいのですから。その基準に沿って一日のスケジュールを考えていけばいいのですから。しかし、その基準がないとあれこれ悩み、決断が困難になり、複雑になり、その優先順位を間違ってしまうのです。さて、それでは今日開いている箴言の言葉から聖書が言っている一つの基準を見ていきましょう。
『９あなたの財産と、すべての産物の初なりをもって主をあがめよ。１０そうすれば、あなたの倉は満ちて余り、あなたの酒ぶねは新しい酒であふれる』
ソロモンはここで私達にチャレンジングなことを話しています。すなわち、あなたの最良のものをもって神を崇めよというのです。この言葉の真意は創世記に記されている最初の男女、アダムとイブ、その息子達の間に起きた出来事にまでさかのぼります。
創世記４章２節―５節『アベルは羊を飼う者となり、カインは土を耕す者となった。日がたって、カインは地の産物を持ってきて、主に供え者とした。アベルもまた、その群れの初子と肥えたものとを持ってきた。主はアベルとその供え物とを顧みられた。しかし、カインとその供え物とは顧みられなかったので、カインは大いに憤って、顔を伏せた』。
アダムとイブの長男、カインは土を耕す者となり、弟アベルは羊を飼う者となりました。この二人が神様に捧げものを携えてやってきました。それぞれの仕事を背景として、彼らが得た産物を持参したのです。すなわちアベルは「羊の群れの初子と肥えたもの」をもってきて主に供えました。カインは「地の産物」をもってきました。この二人に対して神様は弟アベルの供えものを顧みられましたが、兄の供えものは顧みられませんでした。兄はこのことを不服に思い、その心に大いなる憤りが起こりました。この出来事の結論を申し上げますと、この怒りを抑えることができずに兄は弟を殺害してしまうのです。
読みすごしてしまうような出来事ですが、この二人の供えものには違いがあったようです。アベルは「初子と肥えたもの」を、すなわち群れの中で最善のものをもって神に供えたのです。それに対してカインは供えものをもってはきたのですが、それは最善のものではなかったようです。よく、スーパーの端っこのほうに形が崩れたり、痛んでいるような商品にならないような野菜や果物が安く売られていますが、まず良きものを自分のものとして取り、残ったどうでもいいようなものを神様の前に持ってきたのではないかと思われます。
詩篇９６篇の記者は言いました。『そのみ名にふさわしい栄光を主に帰せよ。供え物を携えてその大庭にきたれ』（詩篇９６篇８節）
この記者は「主のみ名にふさわしい栄光」というものがあるのだから、その栄光にふさわしいものをもって、主を崇めなさいと言うのです。私達にとって主はどんなお方なのでしょうか。そのみ名にふさわしいものとは何なのでしょうか。
皆さん、ご覧のとおり、私は牧師をしています。人によって私は色々な呼び名で呼ばれることでしょう。ある方は私を耶蘇坊主とクラシカルに呼ぶかもしれませんし、ある方は神父さん、またある方は宗教家と呼ぶかもしれません。何と呼ばれてもけっこうですが、宗教家が神を第一にして生きなさい、神に最高のものを捧げなさいというと、警戒心を持たれる方達が世の中にはたくさんいると思います。なぜなら、こう言われると家族を捨てて集団生活をしながら怪しい修行をしている人々や、何千万もする壺や掛け軸を思い起こす人達がいるからです。
ですから予め申し上げますことは、教会はこのようなことについて強制をするところでは全くありません。そのことで肩身が狭くなる必要は全くありませんし、プレッシャーなどを感じる必要は全くありません。どうぞ皆さんのご自由にしてください。ただ今日は私の思いではなく、聖書が語り続けている祝福について、優先順位についてお話しさせていただきます。このことは「そうしなければならない」とお話するのではなくて「こうすることが結局はあなたの祝福となります」ということをお話しするものです。それではまず旧約聖書のマラキ章よりお話しましょう。
『わたしの宮に食物のあるように、十分の一全部をわたしの倉に携えてきなさい。これをもってわたしを試み、わたしが天の窓を開いて、あふるる恵みを、あなたがたに注ぐか否かを見なさいと、万軍の主は言われる』（マラキ３章１０節）。
このマラキ書の言葉はどこから来ているのでしょうか。それは申命記からきています。「あなたは毎年、畑に種をまいて獲るすべての産物の十分の一を必ず取り分けなければならない。そしてあなたの神、主の前、すなわち主がその名を置くために選ばれる場所で、穀物と、ぶどう酒と、油との十分の一と、牛、羊のういごを食べ、こうして常にあなたの神、主を恐れることを学ばなければならない」（申命記１４章２２節－２３節）。
当時、農耕がなされていた時、神様はイスラエルの民に向かい、彼らの収穫の十分の一を自らのもとに携え捧げることを示されました。言うまでもありませんが、神様はその穀物を調理し、自ら食したということではありません。極論を言えば、それらの捧げものは神様にとって必要なものではありません。それを受けなければならないほどに窮しているということでは全くありません。なぜなら詩篇２４篇に『地と、それに満ちるもの、世界と、そのなかに住む者とは主のものである』（詩篇２４篇１節）とありますように、この世界の万物は全て神様のものだからです。人がかき集めたものの１０分の１などは神様の前に無きに等しいものです。それならなぜ神様はそれらのものを彼らに求めたのでしょうか。
理由は一つしかありません。神様が人に求めていることは、私達の神様に対してどれだけ心を込めて献身しているのかということです。１０のもの全てを私達に与えてくださるお方に対して、私達はどれだけそんな神様を大切にしているのか、そのためにどんな真心を持っているのか、神様の関心はそこだけにあるのです。ですから、心が伴わっていない捧げものをしたカインは神様に顧みられることはなかったのです。
そして、驚くべきことに心を込めて神様の前に捧げる者に対する約束というものもこのマラキ書は記しているのです。すなわち『これをもってわたしを試み、わたしが天の窓を開いて、あふるる恵みを、あなたがたに注ぐか否かを見なさいと、万軍の主は言われる』ということです（マラキ３章１０節）。
聖書、申命記には「神を試みてはならない」と記されています。しかし、ここで神様は「このことで私を試みてごらん」と大胆なことを言われます。そして、私が天の窓を開いて、あふるる恵みをあなたがたに注ぐか否かを見なさいと私達に語りかけるのです。
皆さん、ここに私達が第一とする優先順位があるのです。箴言の言葉は「全ての産物の初なり」と記し、アベルは「その群れの初子と肥えたもの」を持ってきました。マラキ書が言っています十分の一とは最後に残ったどうでもいい十分の一ではなく、その１０の内の良きもの、１０分の一ということです。これらのことに対して、私は天の窓を開いてあふるる恵みをあなたに注ぐから、それを見なさいと神様は言われるのです。
このことから分かることは、あなたが持っている最善のものを私に捧げなさいということです。そして、それは何も穀物や今日でいうのなら礼拝で捧げられる献金というものに限らないのです。あなたが持っているギフト、それは楽器を奏でることかもしれないし、あなたがその生業としてきた仕事かもしれませんし、あなたが好んで探求している料理かもしれない、それを己が栄光のためではなく、私の栄光のために惜しむことなく用いてごらんなさい、与えてごらんなさい、そうすれば私はさらにあなたを祝福しようということです。いくつかの聖書の言葉を引用しましょう。
『物惜しみしない者は富み、人を潤す者は自分も潤される』（箴言１１章２５節）。『ばらまいても、なお富む人があり、正当な支払いを惜しんでも、かえって乏しくなる者がある』（新改訳 箴言１１章２４節）。イエス・キリストはこのことをさらにこう語られました。『与えよ。そうすれば、自分にも与えられるであろう。人々はおし入れ、ゆすり入れ、あふれ出るまでに量をよくして、あなたがたのふところに入れてくれるであろう。あなたがたの量るその量りで、自分にも量りかえされるであろうから』（ルカ６章３８節）。
ここに不思議な言葉が書かれています。「物惜しみしない人」、「人を潤す人」、どちらにも共通することは、その人が何かを誰かに与えているということです。これは変な言い方ですが、それは、その人から何かが出ていっているということ、すなわちそれは、その人から何かが失われ、数式で計算するのなら確かにその人にとってマイナスなのです。しかし、驚くべきことはそのマイナスになっているはずの人が祝福され、潤されるだろうというのです。「ばらまいている人」がかえってさらに富むというのです。
反対に当然、支払わなければならないものさえも惜しんでいる、そこまでして与えること、差し出すことを拒んで、ひたすら持っているものを保持しようとする人は数式としてはマイナスになることはないのですが、聖書はその人は乏しくなるというのです。これらのことについてイエス様は、あなたたちが与えられるかどうかは、あなたたちがどれだけ与えているかによる。あなたの量る計りで、あなたも計られるのだから。人々はおし入れ、ゆすり入れ、あふれ出るまでに量をよくして（この表現、すごいですね～）、あなたがたの懐に入れてくれるだろうというのです。
これらのことにパウロも同調して書き記しました。6わたしの考えはこうである。少ししかまかない者は、少ししか刈り取らず、豊かにまく者は、豊かに刈り取ることになる。7各自は惜しむ心からでなく、また、しいられてでもなく、自ら心で決めたとおりにすべきである。神は喜んで施す人を愛して下さるのである。8神はあなたがたにあらゆる恵みを豊かに与え、あなたがたを常にすべてのことに満ち足らせ、すべての良いわざに富ませる力のあるかたなのである（コリント第二の手紙９章６節－８節）
このところでパウロは「わたしの考えはこうである」と前置きしています。すなわち、彼は私はこう思うが、あなたたちがどう思うのかは分からないし、私の思いをあなた方に押しつけようとは思わない。それぞれ各自、惜しむ心からではなく、強いられてでもなく、自分の心で決められたとおりにすればい。ただ私の確信は「少ししかまかない者は、少ししか刈り取らず、豊かにまく者は、豊かに刈り取ることになる」ということ、これが私の確信であり、わたしは今、そのように生きているし、これからも生きていきたいと願っている。実に神は豊かに与える者を祝福してくださるお方であるということを私は知っている。
確かにそうです。パウロが言うように種は蒔いてなんぼのものです。種をパラパラと撒くのならその収穫はそれにふさわしく、豊かに種をまくのなら自ずとそこから得る収穫も多いのです。同じように私達が与えられているものも、それを大いに用いなければ意味がありません。そして、それを主のために用いるのなら、それは幾倍にも祝福されるというのが聖書の約束です。

皆さん、何かをして「あの人はすごい」と言われてもなんぼのことですか。そんなことを言われ続けましたら先週お話しましたダビデのように高いところにズンズンと押し上げられ、とんでもないことをしてしまいますよ。しかし、自分はこのことを神様の栄光のためにさせていただくと一つ一つに没頭してみてください。神様は必ず祝福してくださいます。
先ほどお話しました『少ししかまかない者は、少ししか刈り取らず、豊かにまく者は、豊かに刈り取ることになる』というパウロの言葉ですが、彼はこの言葉を読みつつ、一人のお方の言葉を思い起こしていたに違いありません。誰ですか。そう、イエス・キリストです。イエス様はかつて言われました。
『24よくよくあなたがたに言っておく。一粒の麦が地に落ちて死ななければ、それはただ一粒のままである。しかし、もし死んだなら、豊かに実を結ぶようになる。 25自分の命を愛する者はそれを失い、この世で自分の命を憎む者は、それを保って永遠の命に至るであろう』（ヨハネ１２章２４節－２６節）。
言うまでもありません、この言葉は文字通りイエス様の十字架の死によって成就しました。イエス様がご自身の命を十字架の上で私達のために捧げてくださった故に、今日の私達はあるのです。その一粒の麦が地に撒かれたゆえに、その麦から多くの実が結ばれたのであり、その無数の実の一つが私達なのです。今日、洗礼を受けられる淑子さんもイエス・キリストという一粒の麦から生まれた実なのです。
先に申し上げました。私が今日お話しましたことは「ねばならない」というものではありません。皆さんがどう受け取られかは皆さん次第です。そのことにおいて誰彼に咎められることはありません。しかし、創世記から始まり、ソロモン、パウロ、そしてイエス・キリストにいたるまで、彼らが私達人間が神様からいただくことができる祝福について語っているということ、このことを心に留めようではありませんか、否、留めるだけではなく、そのように私達も生きようではありませんか。
あの映画にもなりました有名な「ナルニア国物語」を書いたC.Sルイスという人が書いた一文を私は時々、引っ張り出してきて読みます。彼はこういいました。『もし、私がこの世で一番愛するものよりも神を愛するようになったら、この世で一番愛するものを今よりもっとよく愛せるようになるでしょう。この世で一番愛するものを愛するために神をおろそかにするようになるならば、かえってこの世で一番愛するものを全然愛していないという状態に進んでいってしまうのです。第一のものを第一にする時、第二のものは抑えつけられるのではなく、むしろ、さらに拡がっていくのです』
この書を読むたびに私はこの言葉が真理であることの確信が強められます。今日のメッセージタイトルは「使命：命の使い方」です。ある意味、このタイトルは皆さんへのチャレンジです。「使命」という言葉は「命を使う」と書きます。あなたが今を生きている使命は何でしょうか。あなたは何のために今、命を使っていますか。これからの余生、何のために与えられている命を使っていきましょうか。お祈りしましょう。
Mission: How to use your life
Last week we learned from Proverbs chapter 3 verse 7and 8 ”Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones”. Today, we are going to study 9 to 10. “Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine”. (Proverbs 3:9-10)
Though verse 7 to 8 follows verse 9 to 10, these two groups of verses don’t seem to connect to each other. You may notice that each verse in Proverbs is generally independent and should be understood as it’s meaning by itself.
However, on these particular verses, I would say that they are related to each other. Before we worship God, we need to recognize that our knowledge is limited and we are powerless and lack wisdom. When we accept we can’t compare ourselves with God because He is supreme, we realize God is the only one to be praised and He deserves to receive the best from us.
The other day, at the gym I usually use, someone broke into my locker and stole my belongings. Fortunately, the damage was minimal since my wallet and the drivers license were not stolen. I thanked God for it. I thought that I was careful enough to protect my belongings as I secured the locker. But the key was broken easily and my belongings were taken. I learned again through this experience that it is impossible to protect myself, my family and my church by myself. I learned that the verse in Psalms (127:1) is really true. “Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain.” I was arrogant since I thought I could protect my family. But it was God who watches over us. When we think upon this matter, we spontaneously want to praise God who watches us every day and blesses us. We think about how we can worship God through us.
Several days ago, I was reading a book which says that a person who could work efficiently knew his priorities well. In other words, well-organized person knows what he or she has to do and understands what to start in the first place.
If our life is a collection of each single day, it will be very important to know what our priority is each day. We would be shocked if our priority was revealed wrong or we realized that there were more important things in our life. If we don’t know the priority, we might try to start various things which often fail to be accomplished.
For example, many of us have work to do. For some people, work is the first and second priority on the list.. The third one is work as well. It may be possible to finish our life with only work. Of course, sometimes we are driven into such a situation. But what we have to know is that various problems are starting in the place where we don’t notice while focusing on only working.
Even though you say something to your company like “I devoted myself to this company. I have worked so diligently that I can say part of the company’s successes attributes to my effort. I want you to solve my problem which is the result of sacrificing my family for the company”, no company will reply that “I am very sorry. It must have been hard for you, so we will send a specialist to fix your problem for your painful sacrifice”.
Each life is different. So each one has to choose his or her own way, and we understand that nobody can complain about others’ choice. But don’t you think that it is the Bible word that we have to listen to first. And only in the Bible, there is the true priority we should keep in our heart. What do you think?
Surly our life will become very comfortable if we know the priority written in the Bible. It sounds simple, doesn’t it? It will be easy for us because we make the decision based on the rules in the Bible. It is easy because we make the daily schedule by its standard. But if we don’t have the standard, we will be worried and will not be able to make good decisions. Things will get more complicated and as a result, we will choose the wrong priority. let’s see the standard in the Bible from today’s verse in Proverbs.
“Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine”
Solomon challenges us in this verse. He said that honor God with the best things that we have. In order to know the true meaning of it, we need to go back to the incident between Adam and Eve, the first man and woman and their sons in Genesis.
Later she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. 3 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. 4 And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, 5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.
Cain, the first son of Adam and Eve, became a farmer and Abel kept sheep. Those two came to God to bring offerings. They brought what they earned from their work. Abel brought the fat portion from some of the firstborn of his flock as an offering. Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil. God looked with favor on an offering of Abel, younger brother, but didn’t accept Cain’s offering. Cain, the older brother, was dissatisfied and became furious. As a result, Cain could not control his anger and killed Abel.
It seems like a trivial incident in the whole Bible, but we should know that there are differences between those two offerings. Abel gave the fat portion of the first born to God. It means that it is the best portion in his flock. On the other hand, what Cain brought to God was not the best fruits of the soil. We often see that half spoiled vegetables and fruits are sold in cheep price on the corner of a grocery store. I guess Cain took all of the good portions for himself and brought the leftovers to God.
The author of Psalms chapter 96 said, “Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring an offering and come into his courts”.( Psalms 96:8)
He said that we should honor God with the offering worthy for God, since God’s glory is worthy of his name. Who is the lord for us? What is the offering worthy of his name?
Brothers and sisters, as you know, I am a pastor. But some people call me by different titles. One may call me with a traditional name like a “Christian monk”. One may call me a “father” or a “religionist”. I don’t mind whatever my title is. But I should be careful as some people may become cautious especially in Japan if a religious person says, “live with God as your first priority.” or “give the best thing as your offering” It is because that it reminds them of the group of people who left their families to live with another group that practices a strange religious ritual in Japan. Or it also reminds them of a cult religion which tried to sell very expensive vases and wall hanging scrolls for funding.
Now I make sure that a church is not a place to be forced into such a strange practice. You don’t need to feel humiliated or feel pressure at an offering at all. Please feel free with it. However, today I will talk about it not from my thoughts but from what the Bible says. It is about the blessing and the priority. I am not saying this because you have to do it but because it will bring the blessings to you if you follow what the Bible says. Let’s look up the verse in Malachi of the old testament.
Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it. (Malachi 3:10)
Where is the source of this word of Malachi? It is from Deuteronomy. “Be sure to set aside a tenth of all that your fields produce each year.23 Eat the tithe of your grain, new wine and olive oil, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks in the presence of the Lord your God at the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name, so that you may learn to reverethe Lord your God always.” (Deuteronomy 14:22-23)
When the Israelites were farming, God told them to bring one-tenth of their crops to God. Needless to say, it doesn’t mean that God himself cooks or eats the crops he received. It may sound extreme but actually God doesn’t need anything. God is not needy at all. It is written in Psalms chapter 24. It says” The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; “(24:1) Everything on this earth belongs to God. The offering which is one-tenth of their harvest is nothing for Him. Then why did God ask the Israelites to bring such offerings?
There is only one reason. What God wants is their dedication to God. He wants to know how much they love God who gives everything to them and how much they are sincere to God. God is concerning only with this matter. This is the reason why Cain’s offering was not accepted by God because his heart was not in his offerings.
Amazingly, it is written in Malachi about the promise to the person who bring offerings with sincere heart. “ Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.”(3:10)
The Bible tells us not to test God in Deuteronomy. But in this part, God allows us to test him with the offering. He told us to see if he opens the floodgates of heaven and pours out so much of his blessing.
Brothers and sisters, this is the priority we need to know. Proverbs says that it is the first fruit of all crops, and Abel brought the fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. One-tenth written in Malachi doesn’t mean one-tench of leftovers. It is one good portion out of ten. For those who give the best offerings, God pours out blessing by opening the floodgates of heaven. He wants us to witness His blessing.
What we learned from this part is that we need to offer God the best thing we have. It doesn’t limit to harvest or offering we do now at the worship service. It may be your gift or talent like playing instruments. It could be your work you pursue, or cooking food you enjoy. God wants us to use our talents lavishly not for our glory but for God’s glory and wants us to see how many blessings God pours on us. I will quote some words in the Bible.
A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed. (Psalms 11:2) One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. (Psalms 11:24) Jesus told us more like this. “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” (Luke 6:38)
See those words. “generous person” and “whoever refreshes others”. The common action between the two is both giving something to others. It may sound strange, but giving means that something is taken away from someone. It means that a person loses something. If I use a numerical formula here, the situation is expressed with a negative or a minus sign. But surprisingly the Bible says that a person who has a negative sign will be blessed and will be refreshed. A person who gives freely gains more.
Contrarily the Bible says that a person who has a grudge against expenses and is unwilling to give will be poor although what they own is not expressed by a minus sign in numerical formula. Jesus said the amount we gain depends on how much we give. It is because we are measured by the measure we use. If we give, they will give us with a good measure by pressing down and by shaking together. (What an expression!) It will be poured into our laps.
Paul also agreed with this and wrote. 6 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. 7 Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give,not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. (2 Corinthians 9: 6-8)
Paul started with saying “remember this”. He wants to mention what he believes. He doesn’t care what we think and doesn’t want to force his idea on us. Each of us should give what we want to offer in our hearts not reluctantly or under pressure. But he believes firmly that whoever sows sparingly will reap sparingly and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. This is his belief he says and he lives in this way now and in the future. He knew that God really blesses whoever gives abundantly.
Yes, I agree with it. As Paul says, how much we harvest depends on how much we sow.
If we sow sparingly, we only get little. If we sow generously, we can harvest abundantly. In the same way, if we don’t use our gift given by God well, it will be meaningless. If we use our gifts for the Lord, we will be blessed abundantly. This is what the Bible promises.
Recently, I had come to notice something when I saw my children. Now it is becoming rather a conviction. Anything children learn like school work, music or sports will be in vain if they do only for their own benefit.
However, it will be wonderful if their ultimate goal is to glorify God using what they are learning now.. In raising kids in this country, sometimes we, parents, feel like we are their chauffeurs. As the chauffeurs, we take our children to places so that they can have lessons, classes, practices and other precious experience. I believe that many parents have an experience that they want to quit the hard job, thinking “What are we doing this for?”
Then we know the answer that our children are doing something with what they are learning now for God’s purpose in the future. We really wish that children who like to study science will glorify God through the science field. We want children who devote themselves to sports and master special skills to glorify God through them. If they learn how to play an instrument, we want them to glorify God through it. We want them to use Japanese or English for God’s glory. Through what they are given, they should give back to God at first. While we,parents, are driving children places, we can have a great pleasure thinking about their future service for the Lord. Life with glorifying God will also become their blessings as I told you today.
Brothers and sisters. Is it so important for you to be praised by people after pursuing something? If you keep receiving praises, you will be proud like David who I told about last week and you may do something terribly wrong. Instead, devote yourselves to something for God’s glory. Surely, God will bless you.
Let’s go back to the word written by Paul,”Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. I imagine that Paul remembered someone while writing this letter. Do you know who he is? Yes, it is Jesus. Jesus once told people. 24 Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. 25 Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.(Jhon 12:24-26)
Needless to say, this word is fulfilled by Jesus on the cross. We owe what we are today to Jesus because he gave his life for us on the cross. After one kernel of wheat was sowed, it bears fruits abundantly and we are one of those countless fruits. Yoshiko-san, who is going to be baptized today was also born from this one grain which is Jesus.
What I told you about the offering today is not something we force you to do. It is up to you if you follow the guide line. Nobody blames you even if you don’t follow. However, I believe that it is better to fix ourselves on our mind upon the blessings that God tells us about. It begins with Genesis and go through Solomon and Paul to Jesus. No. just knowing about the blessing is not enough. Let’s practice it.
I sometimes quote from “The Chronicles of Narnia” by C.S Lewis which was made into a movie several years ago. He said, “When I have learn to love God better than my earthly dearest, I shall love my earthly dearest better than I do now. In so far as I learn to love my earthly dearest at the expense of God and instead of God, I shall be moving towards the state in which I shall not love my earthly dearest at all. When first things are put first, second things are not suppressed but increased.”
The more I read this sentence, the more I believe that this is true. Today’s message title is “Mission: How to use your life” It may be a challenge to you some what. “Mission” is translated as “using your life” with Chinese character. What is your mission? How are you used for God’s mission? How are you going to use your life for His purpose? Let’s pray.
