・・・その時に私達はこの地上では理解できなかったことが分かるでしょう。なぜ、あのような時に、あの事が起きたのか、寄留者であった時に保留されていた疑問が全て解き明かされるのです。それはあたかも私達がこの地上で生きた、それぞれの年月の出来事が詰まった部屋を一つ一つ、イエス様に案内されて歩くようなものです。あの年は今でも忘れない、辛い年だった。しかし、そんな年の扉を開ける時に私達は「なんということでしょう！」と喜び叫ぶのです。そして、その喜びが取り去られることはないのです。その時に私達はもはやイエス様に問いかえすことはなにもないのです・・・。

寄留者として生きる
私達は「キリストを知る」というテーマのもと、ヨハネによる福音書をみています。私達がイエスという方はどのようなお方であったかということを知るということは、すなわち、私達はどのように生きるべきかということを知ることになります。イエス・キリストは十字架にかけられる数時間前にエルサレムのとある二階座敷で、このようなことを弟子達に語りました。
1「あなたがたは、心を騒がせないがよい。神を信じ、またわたしを信じなさい。2わたしの父の家には、すまいがたくさんある。もしなかったならば、わたしはそう言っておいたであろう。あなたがたのために、場所を用意しに行くのだから。3そして、行って、場所の用意ができたならば、またきて、あなたがたをわたしのところに迎えよう。たしのおる所にあなたがたもおらせるためである。4わたしがどこへ行くのか、その道はあなたがたにわかっている」（ヨハネ１４章１節ー４節）。
この言葉がどのような状況でイエス様の口から出てきたかと言いますと、そこには背景があります。そうです、この言葉が導かれる前にこのようなやりとりがイエス様と弟子ペテロの間にありました。
36シモン・ペテロがイエスに言った、「主よ、どこへおいでになるのですか」。イエスは答えられた、「あなたはわたしの行くところに、今はついて来ることはできない。しかし、あとになってから、ついて来ることになろう」。37ペテロはイエスに言った、「主よ、なぜ、今あなたについて行くことができないのですか。あなたのためには、命も捨てます」。38イエスは答えられた、「わたしのために命を捨てると言うのか。よくよくあなたに言っておく。鶏が鳴く前に、あなたはわたしを三度知らないと言うであろう」。（ヨハネ１３章３６節ー３８節）
そうです、このところでペテロをはじめその場に居合わせた弟子達の間に起きた動揺とは「あなたはわたしの行くところに、今はついて来ることはできない。しかし、あとになってから、ついて来ることになろう」（３６）というイエス様の言葉でした。そして、このことに対してペテロは「そんなことは言わないでください」とばかりに「主よ、なぜ、今あなたについて行くことができないのですか。あなたのためには、命も捨てます」（３７）とイエス様にくらいつきます・・・が、私達は彼の結末を知っています。そうです「イエス様が行くところ」とは、この後に「イエス様が十字架に磔にされて命を引き取ってから行くところ」なのです。
私達が心を騒がす要因は色々ありますが、なぜ、この言葉が弟子達の心を騒がしたのでしょう。彼らは自分達の将来がこれからどうなるのか分からないということ、すなわち、自分達はもはやイエス様と共におれないのではないか、イエス様は自分達をおいてどこかに行ってしまうのではないかという漠然とした心の騒ぎがあったことでしょう。そして、この彼らの心の騒ぎを突き詰めていきますと、その出所は一つしかないのです。
イエス・キリストは必要とあれば病を負う者達を癒し、空腹になれば彼らに食物を与えました。それは自分の力を誇示するためではなくて、目の前にいる人が癒しと充足を求めているのであるのなら、その深い憐れみゆえに、その前を素通りすることはせず、ご自身が有する力を惜しむことなくそのために用いられたからです。しかし、イエス様の思いは「病の癒し」とか「食べて満腹する」ということだけに向けられてはおりませんでした。イエス様が常に心に留めていたことは「人は必ず死ぬ」という歴然とした事実でした。イエス様の友人、ラザロの死のところでもお話しましたように、その死がどんなに人間の間に深い闇となっているかということをイエス様は知っていました。その死がどんなに人の心を騒がせているかということを知っていました。
若い時にはまだ「自分の死」なんてことには思いがいたらないかもしれません。しかし、年を重ねるにあたり、時に心が騒ぐ時があります。自分の行く末を思う時に心が騒ぐのです。しかし、このところでイエス様はそんな私達に「心を騒がすな」と言われます。なぜなら、父の家にはすまいがたくさんあり、私はあなたがたのために場所を用意しに行き、その場所の用意ができたらあなたがたを迎えようと言うのですから。そう、私達には行くべき場所が備えられているとキリストは言われたのです。
一週間、二週間と旅行したとしますでしょう。そうしますとだんだんと住み慣れた家が恋しくなります。ホテルに滞在しているとベッドメイキングをしてくれ、ゴミは捨てられ、タオルも新しいものに変えてくれます。しかし、やはり私達は自分の家が落ち着きます。どんなに美味しい旅館の食事をいただいても、家で焼く一枚のトーストやお茶漬けが恋しくなります。そこが私達がいつもいる、一番落ち着く場所だからです。こんな私達はいよいよその人生の晩年になりますと終（つい）の住処と呼ばれるような場所を求めます。しかし、どういうわけかそのような場所を見つけ、そこに身を落ち着かせても時に心が騒ぎます。なぜですか、聖書はダビデのこのような言葉を残しています。
4「主よ、わが終りと、わが日の数のどれほどであるかをわたしに知らせ、わが命のいかにはかないかを知らせてください。5見よ、あなたはわたしの日をつかのまとされました。わたしの一生はあなたの前では無にひとしいのです。まことに、すべての人はその盛んな時でも息にすぎません。ことに人は影のように、さまよいます。まことに彼らはむなしい事のために騒ぎまわるのです。彼は積みたくわえるけれども、だれがそれを収めるかを知りません（詩篇３９篇４節ー６節）。
ダビデは「あなたはわたしの日をつかのまとされた」と言いました。そうです、神は私達の人生をつかのまとして定めたのです。彼が言っていますように実に私達の一生は神様の前では無に等しいものです、彼が言うようにどんなに栄えている時でも、盛んな時でもそれは息のようなものであり、私達はむなしい事のために心がさわぎます。なぜですか、それはまさしく一時的なものであるからです。イエス様が備えようという場所はそんなつかのまの場所ではなく、私達が永久に生きる場所なのです。
歳をとってから住環境を変えることはなかなか大変なこです。しかし、神様はあえてそのことをするように、既に老齢となっている、あとは終の住処で余生を送ろうと考えていたアブラハムに語りかけました。1時に主はアブラムに言われた、「あなたは国を出て、親族に別れ、父の家を離れ、わたしが示す地に行きなさい。2わたしはあなたを大いなる国民とし、あなたを祝福し、あなたの名を大きくしよう。あなたは祝福の基となるであろう。3あなたを祝福する者をわたしは祝福し、あなたをのろう者をわたしはのろう。地のすべてのやからは、あなたによって祝福される」。4アブラムは主が言われたようにいで立った。ロトも彼と共に行った。アブラムはハランを出たとき七十五歳であった（創世記１２章１節－４節）。
この時からアブラハムとその妻、サラの人生は波乱万丈、彼らは色々なところを通り、やがて、誰しもが経験しますように、まずサラがその最期を迎えます。
1サラの一生は百二十七年であった。これがサラの生きながらえた年である。2サラはカナンの地のキリアテ・アルバすなわちヘブロンで死んだ。アブラハムは中にはいってサラのために悲しみ泣いた。3アブラハムは死人のそばから立って、ヘテの人々に言った、4「わたしはあなたがたのうちの旅の者で寄留者ですが、わたしの死人を出して葬るため、あなたがたのうちにわたしの所有として一つの墓地をください」（創世記２３章１節－４節）。
開口一番、この個所ではアブラハムの妻、サラの一生は１２７年であった記されています。当時、人の結婚は早く、二人はおそらく十代で夫婦になったことでしょう。ということは彼らは結婚して１００年以上共に暮らしたのです。
１００年も共にいるのですから、この夫婦は色々なところを通り、夫婦の間にも色々な問題があったことをでしょう。創世記を読めばこの夫婦の間柄にも危機があったことがうかがい知れます。ここにはアブラハムはサラのために悲しみ、泣いたと書かれています。この泣いたという言葉はヘブル語でとても強い表現を表します。すなわち、彼は１００年共に歩んだパートナーを思い激しく泣いたのです。聖書はこの前にも後にもアブラハムが泣いたということを記していません。また、聖書において一人の女性が何年生きたかと、その年数が記されているのはこのサラだけです。実にこの涙はアブラハム夫妻と神様だけが知る１００年の重みのある涙です。
アブラハムはサラの死を前にひとしきり泣き、３節を見ますと「アブラハムは死人のそばから立った」と書かれています。サラはもはや立ち上がることはできませんが、まだ神にあって生きながらえているアブラハムはそこから立ち上がり、妻を葬る場所を備えました。そして、その時にその場所を譲り受けるヘテ人にこう言いました「わたしはあなたがたのうちの旅の者で寄留者ですが、わたしの死人を出して葬るため、あなたがたのうちにわたしの所有として一つの墓地をください」（創世記２３章４節）。
彼は自分達のステイタスを「自分は旅の者、寄留者だ」と言いました。旅人であるということ、寄留者であるということは彼は未だ本来おるべき場所にはおらず、その所を仮の宿として身を寄せている者ということです。彼らは今、一時的な場所にいるということです。
まさしくこれが彼の自分の人生に対する見方でした。新約聖書のへブル書には信仰に生きた聖書の人物たちが書き連ねてある個所があり、それは「さて、信仰とは望んでいる事がらを確信し、まだ見ていない事実を確認することである。昔の人たちは、この信仰のゆえに賞賛された」（へブル１１章１節、２節）という言葉で始まり、続いてその信仰をお題目だけにすることなく、実際にその信仰と共にこの地上での生涯を全うしていった信仰者の名と彼らが成したことが記されており、その中にアブラハムも出てくるのです。
「信仰によってアブラハムは受け継ぐべき地に出て行けとの召しをこうむった時、それに従い、行く先を知らないで出て行った。信仰によって、他国にいるようにして約束の地に宿り、同じ約束を継ぐイサク、ヤコブと共に幕屋に住んだ。彼はゆるがぬ土台の上に建てられた都を、待ち望んでいたのである。その都をもくろみ、また建てたのは、神である」（へブル１１章８節ー１０節）
そして、このような言葉が続きます「13これらの人はみな、信仰をいだいて死んだ。まだ約束のものは受けていなかったが、はるかにそれを望み見て喜び、そして、地上では旅人であり寄留者であることを自ら言い表わした。14そう言いあらわすことによって、彼らがふるさとを求めていることを示している。15もしその出てきた所のことを考えていたなら、帰る機会はあったであろう。16しかし実際、彼らが望んでいたのは、もっと良い、天にあるふるさとであった。だから神は、彼らの神と呼ばれても、それを恥とはされなかった。事実、神は彼らのために、都を用意されていたのである」（へブル１１章１３節ー１６節）。
アブラハムは信仰と共に、まだ受けていない約束をはるかに望み見て喜び、この地上での自分のステイタスは旅人であり、寄留者であると自ら言い表したのです。アブラハムは妻との別れを悲しみました。しかし、アブラハムは妻は一時、１００年来、共に生きながらえたこの土地を離れ、いよいよ約束の地に行ったのだと信じて、そこから立ち上がりました。彼は何を信じて立ち上がったのでしょうか。そうです、彼は心に誓ったに違いありません「サラよ、待っていておくれ。わたしもあなたが行った神がそなえてくださっている天のふるさとに必ず行くから」。
アブラハム以降、彼から出た者達、すなわちイスラエルの民はこの地に定住する場所を持つことなく、文字通りその生活は寄留者、旅人の年月を過ごしたということを聖書は記しています。彼らはこの地上で約束の地を目指して諸々の苦難を通り、信仰と不信仰の間を何度も行き来しつつ歩み続けます。この彼らの歩みこそが、まさしく私達の人生の型となるものであり、イエス・キリストの今日の言葉は旅人であり、寄留者である私達が行きつくべきその場所について、私はその場所を備え、あなたたちを迎えるという約束の言葉なのです。
「Before and After」という日本のテレビ番組があります。雨漏りがしたり、床が抜け落ちそうなあばら家を、著名な建築家が素晴らしい家に建て替えてくれるという番組です。その番組ではまずカメラはその家がどんなにボロボロであるかを余すところなく映します。そこに住んでいる方達がその家に住む苦労を語ります。見ている者は、こりゃひどいな、よくここに住んでいたなという思いになります。
そして、その家は取り壊され、リフォームされます。その工事を受け持っている匠達はその腕の見せ所、斬新なアイデアと共に見違えるような家に建て替えていきます。その間、依頼した者達はその新しくなっていく家を見ることが許されず、いよいよ全てが完成してから新しくなった自分の家を訪れます。多くの者達はその外観が目に飛び込んできた瞬間から感極まり、玄関扉があいた瞬間に涙を流す者がおり、家にあがり、居間、そしてキッチン、寝室をめぐるにあたり、どこに行っても彼らは感謝、感激するのです。その間中、この番組は聞き慣れたバックグラウンド・ミュージックと共に女性のナレーターが何がどう新しくなったのか、そこに匠のどんな思いが込められているのかを説明するのです。
何度かこの番組を見ていると、そのナレーターがよく言う言葉というものに気がつきます。そう、彼女は新しくなったキッチンドアが開かれた時にこう言うのです。「なんということでしょう！」。浴室に足を踏み入れた時に言うのです「なんということでしょう！」寝室に入った時に言うのです「なんということでしょう！」。その彼女の言葉はかつてのボロボロの家を知る者達が目の前にある信じられない光景を見た瞬間の心を見事に代弁しているのです。彼らはその違いに驚くと共に、その一つ一つの背後に匠がどれだけ彼らのことを思い、心を込めて造ってくれたのかということを感じているのです（このナレーターの言葉が何度も繰り返されるものですから、うちの子供達もそれをキャッチしまして、食卓に彼らが好きなおかずが並ぶと「なんということでしょう！」と言うようになり、困っています）。
冒頭に取り上げましたイエス様の言葉はヨハネ１３章の言葉でしたが、続く１６章では再び、イエス様と弟子達の間にまた同じ問答がなされています。
19イエスは、彼らが尋ねたがっていることに気がついて、彼らに言われた、「しばらくすればわたしを見なくなる、またしばらくすればわたしに会えるであろうと、わたしが言ったことで、互に論じ合っているのか。20よくよくあなたがたに言っておく。あなたがたは泣き悲しむが、この世は喜ぶであろう。あなたがたは憂えているが、その憂いは喜びに変るであろう。21女が子を産む場合には、その時がきたというので、不安を感じる。しかし、子を産んでしまえば、もはやその苦しみをおぼえてはいない。ひとりの人がこの世に生れた、という喜びがあるためである。22このように、あなたがたにも今は不安がある。しかし、わたしは再びあなたがたと会うであろう。そして、あなたがたの心は喜びに満たされるであろう。その喜びをあなたがたから取り去る者はいない。23その日には、あなたがたがわたしに問うことは、何もないであろう・・・。・・・・25わたしはこれらのことを比喩で話したが、もはや比喩では話さないで、あからさまに、父のことをあなたがたに話してきかせる時が来るであろう。（ヨハネ１６章１９節ー２３節、２５節）。
今、私達は不安のうちに生きています。私達のステイタスは旅人であり、寄留者だからです。しかし、私達がやがていつの日かイエス様に迎えられる時に私達の憂いは喜びに変えられます。そして、その日に私達はイエス様に問うことはもはや何もないのです。私達の手元にある聖書にはイエス様が御国について比喩、すなわち譬えによって説明していますが、もはやその必要はありません。その時には、はっきりとイエス様は私達に父なる神について語ってくださるというのです。
その時に私達はこの地上では理解できなかったことが分かるでしょう。なぜ、あのような時に、あの事が起きたのか、寄留者であった時に保留されていた疑問が全て解き明かされるのです。それはあたかも私達がこの地上で生きた、それぞれの年月の出来事が詰まった部屋を一つ一つ、イエス様に案内されて歩くようなものです。あの年は今でも忘れない、辛い年だった。しかし、そんな年の扉を開ける時に私達は「なんということでしょう！」と喜び叫ぶのです。そして、その喜びが取り去られることはないのです。その時に私達はもはやイエス様に問いかえすことはなにもないのです。
もう今から２０年も昔になります。今でこそ「ホスピスケアー」という言葉はよく知られるようになりましたが、日本でその第一人者になりました医師でもあり、牧師でもある下稲葉康之（しもいなば・やすゆき）先生の話しを聞いたことがあります。先生は多くの方達の最期を看取る日々を送っていますから、その人の数だけその人との最期の思い出があります。その一人にマラソンが大好きだった患者さんがおり、いよいよその方の最期が来た時にその方が先生に言ったそうです「先生、私は先に行って、ゴール地点でタオルを持って先生を待っています」。
私達がいよいよ、この人生の旅路を終えて、その家に着く時、そう、すなわち私達がこの地上での最後の息を吸い込んだ時、その瞬間に私達の寄留者としての日々は終わり、私達は主エスが備えたもう世界の住人となります。その時、イエス様は自ら私達を迎え入れてくださいます。そのところで私達はいったい何度、「なんということでしょう！」という歓喜の声をあげることでしょうか。こんな約束が今、既に私達に確約されているということはなんとさいわいなことでしょう！
仮の宿に住む限り、確かに問題はあります。心を騒がせることもあります。しかし、私達の行く場所を知っているお方は「心を騒がすな」と今も私達に語りかけるのです。これらの主イエスの約束の言葉を文字通り信じたあの使徒パウロの言葉を私達は各々の心に刻み、今日も一歩一歩、この人生の旅路を歩んでいくのです。『わたしは思う。今のこの時の苦しみは、やがてわたしたちに現されようとする栄光に比べると、言うに足りない』（ローマ８章１８節）。
Life as a temporary resident

We have been studying the Gospel According to John under the theme of “Knowing Christ.” When we come to know the life of Jesus, we also learn how we should live our life. Only few hours before Jesus Christ was crucified, Jesus spoke to his disciples at an upper room in Jerusalem:
1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.4 You know the way to the place where I am going.” (John 14:1-4)
Let me set up the background just before these words Jesus spoke these words. The disciple Peter and Jesus were talking to each other.
36 Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.” 37 Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” 38 Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times! (John 13:36-38)
What troubled the hearts of Peter and other disciples assembled in the upper room was what Jesus said: “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.” (36) But, Peter replied to Jesus saying “Don’t say that. Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” Now we know where Jesus was going. Yes, Jesus was going to a place where he would be nailed to the cross to die.
There could be many things which might trouble us. But, why did these words trouble the hearts of the disciples? They were troubled when Jesus told them that they could not be with Jesus. They were troubled to learn that Jesus was going away. They felt that Jesus was abandoning the disciples. And there was only one ultimate reason of their troubled hearts.
Jesus Christ cured the sick when necessary. He provided food if people were hungry. Whenever he saw people needing cure and satisfaction, his deep compassion could not allow him to simply pass them by. Jesus did not hesitate to use his power to help people in need. But, curing the sick or filling the stomachs were not the only concern of Jesus. Jesus was always troubled with the fact that people must die. As I have talked to you in relation to the story of the death of his friend Lazarus, Jesus knew that the death was casting a deep shadow on the hearts of the people. Jesus knew how troubled people were about the inevitable death.
When we are young, we might not even think about our own death. But, as we age, we begin to worry. We worry what awaits us in the future. But, Jesus is telling us not to let the hearts be troubled. He said there are many rooms at his father’s house. He would go ahead of us to prepare the place for us and welcome us. Yes, Jesus was telling us that there are places for us there.
When travel away from home, after a couple of weeks on the road, we begin to miss home. Hotels provide bed-making services, remove trash, and change towels for us. We enjoy their hospitality. But, we still miss our own home. Even if the hotel meals are fabulous, we begin to miss a slice of home-made toast and a bowl of ochazuke rice. Home is where we feel the most comfortable and at home. When we approach the final years of our life, we all look for the final living place. But, even when we find such a place to live, our hearts are still troubled and anxious. Why is it? David said in the Bible:
4 “Show me, Lord, my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is. 5 You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Everyone is but a breath, even those who seem secure. 6 “Surely everyone goes around like a mere phantom; in vain they rush about, heaping up wealth without knowing whose it will finally be. (Psalms 39:4-6)
David said: “You have made my days a mere handbreadth.” Yes indeed. God has made our life to be but momentary. As David said, our life is fleeting and is nothing before God. As David said, even when we feel prosperous and energetic, we are merely rushing about in vain. We feel uneasy. Why? It is because our life is short and temporary. Jesus told us that the place he is preparing for us would not be a temporary place but an eternal place for us to live.
When we get older, it is difficult to change the place of residence. Abraham was already very old and was ready to retire. But, God told him nevertheless: 1 The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. 2 “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” 4 So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Harran. (Genesis 12:1-4)
From this time on, Abraham and his wife Sarah had a tumultuous life. They changed residence many times, and Sarah was the first of the two to face death.
1 Sarah lived to be a hundred and twenty-seven years old. 2 She died at Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham went to mourn for Sarah and to weep over her. 3 Then Abraham rose from beside his dead wife and spoke to the Hittites. He said, 4 “I am a foreigner and stranger among you. Sell me some property for a burial site here so I can bury my dead.” (Genesis 23:1-4)
Here, it is recorded that Sarah, wife of Abraham, lived to be a hundred and twenty-seven years old. In those days, people used to marry young, perhaps in their teens. So, they must have lived together over 100 years.
The couple must have gone through all kinds of circumstances and must have faced numerous conflicts. The book of Genesis tells us that this couple did have hardships. Here, it is said that Abraham mourned for Sarah and wept over her. This word “wept” is a very strong expression in Hebrew language. Abraham wept bitterly over the death of his partner for over 100 years. The Bible does not record Abraham weeping before or after this incident. Bible does not mention how long a woman lived. Sarah was an exception. The tears of Abraham reflected 100 years of married life with Sarah.
Abraham wept for a while over the dead wife. Then, verse 3 says: ”Abraham rose from beside his dead wife.” Sarah could no longer get up. But, Abraham was still alive and rose from there and prepared the burial site for his wife. Abraham said to the Hittites, asking for a piece of land. “I am a foreigner and stranger among you. Sell me some property for a burial site here so I can bury my dead.” (Genesis 23:4)
Abraham said that he was “a foreigner and stranger”. He said he was a traveler and a temporary resident. He said he was not at his own place, and he was but a temporary resident there. He said his stay there was a temporary one.
This was the way Abraham felt about his life. The book of Hebrews in the New Testament lists the names of well-known individuals of faith. This section starts with: ”Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for.” These words are followed with names of people of faith from history together with their individual accomplishment. The name of Abraham is included there.
By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. By faith he made his home in the Promised Land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God. (Hebrews 11:8-10)
After this comes the following words: 13 All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth. 14 People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. 15 If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them. (Hebrews 11:13-16)
Abraham lived by faith. His Promised Land was still far away in distance. He admitted that he was a foreigner and a stranger on earth. Abraham mourned the death of his wife. But, Abraham believed that his wife Sarah left the earth where she lived with Abraham for 100 years and went on to the Promised Land. And Abraham rose up in faith. What did he believe? Abraham must have told Sarah in his heart: “Wait for me Sarah. I will surely come and join you in the place God has prepared for us.”
The Bible tells us that, after Abraham, his descendants, the people of Israel, would spend their days without a permanent residence, living as travelers and strangers. They lived their life on this earth looking forward to the Promised Land. They endured hardship. They meandered between belief and unbelief. Our own journey is a mirror image of their life. We are travelers and strangers on this earth. The words of Jesus Christ this morning promise us that God has prepared a place for us to welcome us.
There is a TV program in Japan named “Before and After.” In this program, old and dilapidated houses are converted by famous architects into brand new beautiful houses. The program shows the terrible condition of the old house it was in before. The resident family members tell the audiences about the hardship they had to go through. The TV viewers feel sorry for these residents and wonder how anyone could have lived in that condition.
The house is torn down and rebuilt. The architects and builders display their skills and amazing sense of new ideas. A brand new house emerges. In the meantime, the residents of the old house are not allowed to see the progress until the house is completed. From the first sight of the new house, the resident family members are overwhelmed. Some could not hold back tears. They walk into the new house, the living room, kitchen, and bedrooms. All through these moments, the narrator of the program explains the changes and the new features of the house that the architects had produced with care.
After watching this program several times, we begin to notice that the narrator repeats the same phrase. As the door to the kitchen is opened, she would say: “How amazing! How wonderful!” As the family members step into the bathroom, she says: “How amazing!” When they see the bedroom, the narrator says: “How wonderful!” She was expressing the grateful feeling of the people who had lived in the dilapidated house. Her words reflected what they felt. They are amazed at how different the house is, and are deeply grateful for the efforts the architects and builders pad poured into the project. (Our children watched the same program many times. They have memorized these words of the narrator. So, when they see favorite dishes on our dinner table these days, they exclaim: “How amazing!”)
The words of Jesus at the beginning of today’s sermon was from Chapter 13. Chapter 16 also records conversation between Jesus and the disciples:
19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me’? 20 Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. 23 In that day you will no longer ask me anything. … … 25 “Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. (John 16:19-23, 25)
Our life is still filled with anxiety. We feel we are travelers and strangers on this earth. But, a day would come when our anxiety would turn into joy when Jesus welcomes us into his house. On that day, there would be no more need to ask questions to Jesus. The Bible tells us how Jesus talks about the Kingdom through parables. When we see Jesus face to face, the parables are no longer needed. At the time, Jesus would tell us openly and clearly about our Father God.
On that day, all of our questions and doubts would evaporate. We would understand the reasons for our experiences on the earth. Any questions about our life as travelers and strangers would be answered. This is just like walking through each room, filled with our memory, as Jesus opens each door and explains everything in there. The old dilapidated room reminds us of our hardships. But, as Jesus opens our eyes, we exclaim: “How amazing! How wonderful!” This feeling of joy would not be taken away from us. There would be no more questions we have to ask Jesus.
Over twenty years ago, I talked with a doctor and pioneer of the hospice care in Japan. His name was Shimoinabe Yasuyuki. Back then, not too many people in Japan had heard about the hospice care. This doctor had seen the final days of many patients. He remembered the story of each patient. One of his favorite patients was a marathon enthusiast. As the moment of his last days came, this patient said: “Doctor, I will go ahead and wait for you at the goal line, with a towel in my hand, when you reach there.”
At the moment when we complete the journey on this earth and finally reach our place in heaven, we finish the days of travelers and strangers and become residents of the place Jesus had prepared for us. At that moment, Jesus would meet us at the door. As Jesus shows us the new house, we would repeat the same words: “How amazing! How wonderful!” We are blessed truly. How amazing and wonderful that we are promise our place in heaven!
We are travelers. We face hardships and we harbor anxiety from time to time. But the one who knows where we are going is telling us “Do not let your hearts be troubled.” As we take each step of our life on this earth, let us remember the words of the Apostle Paul who had believed the promise our Lord Jesus had given us: ”I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.” (Romans 8:18)
