今日の聖書箇所を読みましょう。1わたしはまことのぶどうの木、わたしの父は農夫である。2わたしにつながっている枝で実を結ばないものは、父がすべてこれをとりのぞき、実を結ぶものは、もっと豊かに実らせるために、手入れしてこれをきれいになさるのである。3あなたがたは、わたしが語った言葉によって既にきよくされている。4わたしにつながっていなさい。そうすれば、わたしはあなたがたとつながっていよう。枝がぶどうの木につながっていなければ、自分だけでは実を結ぶことができないように、あなたがたもわたしにつながっていなければ実を結ぶことができない。5わたしはぶどうの木、あなたがたはその枝である。もし人がわたしにつながっており、またわたしがその人とつながっておれば、その人は実を豊かに結ぶようになる。わたしから離れては、あなたがたは何一つできないからである。（ヨハネ１５章１節－５節）。
私達の世界には「本物」と「偽物」があります。当然、私達は本物（まことなるもの）を求めます。何かものを買う時にもその商品が本物かどうかということに注意します。できることなら、偽物は避けたいものです。ここでイエス・キリストが言われている「まことのぶどうの木」とはいったい何に比べてまことなのでしょうか。実はこのイエスの言葉には背景がありまして、「まことではないブドウの木」というものが、イエス様がこの言葉を言われた７５０年前に預言者イザヤによって指摘されていました。イザヤは神様の言葉を受けて、神様ご自身がブドウ畑の主であり、当時のイスラエルの民をブドウ畑、すなわちブドウの木として譬えを語りました。イエス様はこのイザヤの言葉を踏まえて「わたしはまことのぶどうの木」と言われたのです。イザヤ５章には、こう書かれています。少し長いですが読んでみましょう。
1わたしはわが愛する者のために、そのぶどう畑についてのわが愛の歌をうたおう。わが愛する者は土肥えた小山の上に、一つのぶどう畑をもっていた。2彼はそれを掘りおこし、石を除き、それに良いぶどうを植え、その中に物見やぐらを建て、またその中に酒ぶねを掘り、良いぶどうの結ぶのを待ち望んだ。ところが結んだものは野ぶどうであった。3それで、エルサレムに住む者とユダの人々よ、どうか、わたしとぶどう畑との間をさばけ。4わたしが、ぶどう畑になした事のほかに、何かなすべきことがあるか。わたしは良いぶどうの結ぶのを待ち望んだのに、どうして野ぶどうを結んだのか。5それで、わたしが、ぶどう畑になそうとすることを、あなたがたに告げる。わたしはそのまがきを取り去って、食い荒されるにまかせ、そのかきをとりこわして、踏み荒されるにまかせる。6わたしはこれを荒して、刈り込むことも、耕すこともせず、おどろと、いばらとを生えさせ、また雲に命じて、その上に雨を降らさない。7万軍の主のぶどう畑はイスラエルの家であり、主が喜んでそこに植えられた物は、ユダの人々である。主はこれに公平を望まれたのに、見よ、流血。正義を望まれたのに、見よ、叫び。8わざわいなるかな、彼らは家に家を建て連ね、田畑に田畑をまし加えて、余地をあまさず、自分ひとり、国のうちに住まおうとする。9万軍の主はわたしの耳に誓って言われた、「必ずや多くの家は荒れすたれ、大きな麗しい家も住む者がないようになる。10十反のぶどう畑もわずかに一バテの実を結び、一ホメルの種もわずかに一エパの実を結ぶ」。11わざわいなるかな、彼らは朝早く起きて、濃き酒をおい求め、夜のふけるまで飲みつづけて、酒にその身を焼かれている（イザヤ５：１－１１）。
ここでいうブドウ畑、すなわちブドウの木はイスラエルの民を示しています。ブドウ畑の主人は神様です。神様は畑を掘り起し、石を取り除き、物見やぐらまで立てて、良いブドウを植えたはずなのに、そこには野ブドウや質の悪いブドウがなったというのです。私はイスラエルを祝福し、彼らと共にあり、彼らを保護し、その必要を満たしたのに、彼らが結んだ実は悪い実だったというのです。この神が彼らに対してなされたことについて「わたしがブドウ畑になしたことの他に何かすべきことがあるのか」とまで神様は言っています。わたしは「これ以上ないほどにイスラエルに心をかけた」というのです。しかし、彼らはそのような環境の中におりながら、苦い実を結んだのです。これがイスラエルであり、これが私達人間の姿です。
これらのブドウの木に対してイエス様は「わたしはまことのブドウの木、わたしの父は農夫である」と言われたのです。イザヤ書のブドウの木の譬えで父なる神は「ぶどう畑の主(あるじ）」でありました。ここでイエス様が語られているたとえ話では父なる神は「農夫」として語られています。どちらにも共通することは神はぶどう畑、すなわちぶどうの木の管理者であるということです。
私達には生きていくために必要なものが与えられています。太陽、動植物、家族、友人、そして何よりも私達の命、この命は何にも代えがたいものです。神様の側から見れば、それらはまさしく「肥えた土地、手入れされた土地、これ以上、他に何をすべきか」ということであり、このような神の配慮に満ちた場所に私達は暮らしています。しかし、その中で私達はいったいどれだけの実を結んでいるのでしょうか。
全てが整えられていながら、私達の心には不満、怒り、ねたみがあり、あれもこれもという欲望もあり、そこからは苦い実が結ばれます。イザヤ書における神様の嘆きは現代の人間に対する神様の嘆きそのものなのです。そんな背景を知りつつイエス様は語られたのです。「わたしにつながっていなさい。そうすればわたしはあなたがたとつながっていよう。枝がブドウの木につながっていなければ、自分だけでは実を結ぶことができないように、あなたがたも私に繋がっていなければ実を結ぶことはできない。わたしはブドウの木、あなたがたはその枝である。もし人が私につながっておれば、その人は実を豊かに結ぶようになる。わたしから離れては、あなたがたは何一つできないからである」
イスラエルの民が神様により最高の環境が与えられながら、苦々しい実を結び続けたということは、人は自分で良き実を結ぶことができないのだという証明となりました。ゆえにイエス・キリストは『自分だけでは実を結ぶことができない』、『わたしから離れては、あなたがたは何一つできない』と言われたのです。
錦織圭というプロテニスプレイヤーがここ数年、めまぐるしい活躍をしています。実はそんな彼の背後には中国系アメリカ人のマイケルチャンというコーチの存在があります。ご存知のように彼もかつてはプロテニスプレイヤーで、１９８９年のフレンチオープンでは１７歳と三か月で優勝し、グランドスラムの最年少優勝記録を打ち立てました。また彼は敬虔なクリスチャンで、かつてメキシコへのミッショントリップに行く際、私達の教会の礼拝にも来られたことがありました。そんな彼はこんなことを言っています。
「私は決して大きな選手ではなく、プロとしては体が小さすぎ､力もなく、成功は無理だと言われていました。実際にプロの世界はとても厳しいもので、自分より大きな選手と対戦する時には､力の足りなさを感じます」。しかし､マイケルはそのような中で肉体の大きさや強さ以上に大切なものを見つけたといいます。それは神と関係を持つということであり､ そのことによってそれまでとは異なる生涯を歩むようになったというのです。
彼が１７歳の時にフレンチオープンで優勝した時、うぬぼれて、思い上がってしまってもおかしくない状況で、既にイエス・キリストに焦点を合わせていた彼は、その勝利と共についてくるものの虜にならずに済みました。彼は言います。これらの成功はイエス様が人々の人生に触れて下さる事と比べたら重要な事ではありません。神様は私にテニスをするギフトを与えて下さいました。私に力を与えて下さるイエス様なしでは、今の私はなかったでしょう。私がこのような視点と共にプレイすると、のびのびと試合ができ、また勝敗を神様に委ねることができるのです。私には自信があります。なぜなら全てが神様の御手の中にあるということを私は知っているからです。私がすべき大切なことは私のベストを神様に捧げることなのです。私は勝つかもしれないし、負けるかもしれません。しかしイエス様に焦点を合わせている限り、いつも私の内にイエス様しかくださることのできない内なる喜びがあります。
彼はきっと今もこのイエス・キリストとの関係を保ち、錦織選手の指導にあたっているのでしょう。マイケルの人生に特筆すべき日があるとしたら、それはメジャー大会に優勝した日ではなく、それは彼という枝がイエス・キリストという木に繋がった日であったと彼は言うに違いありません。
まさしくこのマイケルの生き様は八節に「あなたがたが実を豊かに結び、そしてわたしの弟子となるならば、それによってわたしの父は栄光をお受けになるであろう」とありますように、彼が試合に勝っても負けても、神に栄光を帰す生き方なのです。私達が実を結ぶことにより、父なる神が栄光を受けるのです。それでは私達がイエス様につながることにより、どんな実を結ぶことができるのかということについて聖書が記していることを見て参りましょう。まず第一に私達がイエス様に結びつくことにより結ぶ実は「悔い改めの実」です。
■悔い改めの実
「だから悔い改めにふさわしい実を結べ。自分の父にはアブラハムがあるなどと心の中で思ってもみるな」（ルカ３章８節）
まず「悔い改めの実」と聞いて、意表をつかれた方がいるかもしれません。なぜ悔い改めなのかと！イエス様は私につながっていなさいと言われました。その命の本流につながる時に分かることがあります。それはその本流の命とは違う、自分の内に流れているものの存在です。私の長男が生まれた時に体に黄疸がでました。そう、小さなからだが黄色く変色したのです。黄疸がでるということには幾つかの理由があるようですが、その一つに子供の血液型が母親のそれと異なるゆえに出る反応だということを聞きました。
私達がイエス・キリストにつながる時に、明らかにそれまで私達の内になかったものが私達に入ってくるわけですから、その時に私達の心はそれに反応します。どういうことか説明しましょう。クリスチャンになって私達がイエス・キリストに繋がるのなら、それまでは悪いとすら思わなかったことが、これは神の前にすべきことではないと分かってくるのです。そして、そのことを聖書は罪と呼びます。イエス様に繋がることにより私達は罪というものは本来、私達にとって異質なものであることに気がつかされるのです。イエス様は「わたしはぶどうの木である」とも言われましたが「わたしは世の光である」とも言われました。光に近づく時に埃が目立ちます。光から離れている限り、埃にはきがつきません。私達がイエス様につながるのなら、私達は悔い改めの実を結ばざるをえないのです。
先にテニス選手のことを話しましたが、もう一人、今度はプロのゴルファーを紹介しましょう。かつてペイン・スチュアート（Payne Stewart）というプロゴルファーがいました。彼は１９９９年、飛行機事故で亡くなったのですが、その時に読売新聞が記事にしていました。その見出しには大きな字で「悔い改めて・スチュアート」と書かれていました（日本の新聞に「悔い改め」という言葉が掲載されるのは珍しいことです）。ペインが１９９１年に全米オープンで優勝した時に、彼の母は彼の性格を粗暴といい、妻は彼を傲慢な男だと言いました。キャディーは彼を気が短く、優柔不断と評しました。彼は無礼極まる態度で有名なゴルファーでした。しかし、彼は亡くなる数年前からキリストを受け入れ、信じるようになりました。彼の手首にはＷＷＪＤというバンドがされ、毎日、聖書を読むようになりました。WWJDとはWhat whould Jesus Do?という「イエス様ならどうなさるか？」ということで、彼は生まれ変わったかのように謙虚な人間となり、優勝トロフィーと側にいる妻の幸せそうな横顔を眺めながら言いました「この満ち足りた静寂を感じることなしに、生きて来たなんて信じられない。隣人を愛する前にすぐに手を出していた自分を振り返りながら、優勝の余韻にひたっている」と。なぜ、彼にこのような変化が起きたのでしょうか。彼がイエス・キリストに繋がったからです。
皆さん、新しい人生を歩み始めようとするのなら、それまでの人生を清算する必要がありますでしょう。それまでの人生を清算し始めますと色々な事が見えてきますでしょう。明らかにレッドとなっているような負債を見出すでしょう。かつての私達の目はふさがれていて、その負債すら私達は見出すことができないのです。しかし、イエス様につながっているのなら、それが見えてくるのです。
ペインは人生の本当の平安を受ける前に、悔い改めの実をむすんだのです。エペソ書２章３節を見ると「また、わたしたちもみな、かつては彼らの中にいて、肉の欲に従って日を過ごし、肉とその思いとの欲するままを行い、ほかの人々と同じく、生れながらの怒りの子であった」とあります。そして続くエペソ２章１３節にはこう書かれています。「ところが、あなたがたは、このように以前は遠く離れていたが、今ではキリスト・イエスにあって、キリストの血によって近いものとなったのである」とあります。何に近くなったのでしょうか。そうイエス・キリストに近くなったとここにはっきりと書かれています。そうです、私達はかつて神から離れて生きていましたが、今はイエスというブドウの木に繋がっているのです。二つ目の実です。それは「平安の実」です。
訓練により結ぶ平安の実
「すべての訓練は当座は喜ばしいものとは思われず、むしろ悲しいものと思われる。しかし、後になれば、それによって鍛えられる者に平安な義の実を結ばせるようになる」（へブル１２章１１節）
イエス様が約束された実を結ぶことは私達が願うところです。しかし、豊かな実を結ぶために、もう一つ必要なことがあるのです。イエス様は言われました「わたしにつながっている枝で実を結ばないものは、父が全てこれを取り除き、実を結ぶものはもっと豊かに実らせるために、手入れしてこれをきれいになさるのである」。そうです、時にキリストにつながっている私達は神様の剪定を受けることがあります。剪定とは実りを得るという目的のため、芽、花、枝、葉を刈り取ることです。なぜなら、それらがある故に大切な栄養が一番必要な場所にいかないからです。またそれだけではなく枝が伸び放題になっていると、その木の外観は損なわれ、害虫に住処をあたえ、病気を温存し、ブドウの木に益となりません。その「剪定」をヘブル書は「訓練」と呼んだのです。
山梨にブドウ狩りに行ったことがあります。そこでこのイエスの言葉を知っていた私はそのブドウ園を管理している人に聞きました。ブドウの木は本当に剪定されるのかと。そうすると確かにブドウの枝は結実期の終わり頃に刈り取られ、冬には幹と少数の枝になってしまい、それは惨めな姿となるというのです。特に若木は三年間は実を結ぶことが許されずに、その期間は徹底して剪定されるというのです。しかし、それにより命が内に蓄えられ、多くの美味しい実が結ばれるというのです。
主にある皆さん、私達も神様からこの剪定を受ける時があります。まさしく、その剪定はパウロが言うように当座は喜ばしいものとは思われず、むしろ悲しいものと思われます。しかし、後になれば、それによって鍛えられる者に平安な義の実を結ばせるようになるのです。この剪定は私達をもう一度、聖書に向き合わせ、祈りに導くのです。その時には殺風景な姿となります。しかし、時が来ればそこから豊かな実が収穫されるのです。
先々週も平安についてお話しました。「わたしは平安をあなたがたに残す」と。その言葉の直後にイエスの弟子達はイエスを裏切り、彼らは後悔と自己嫌悪の時をしばし過ごします。彼らは、特にペテロは自分の力を過信していたのです。しかし、無残にも神様はその彼の思い違いを剪定しました。そのままそれが彼の内にあるのなら、それは彼がキリストにあって実を結ぶことの妨げとなってしまうからです。イエス様が言われたとおりです。「すべての訓練は当座は喜ばしいものとは思われず、むしろ悲しいものと思われる』。その時のペテロの心に平安などはこれっぽっちもなかったことでしょう。しかし、そのようなところを通った彼は後に、『後になれば、それによって鍛えられる者に平安な義の実を結ばせるようになる』とイエス様が言われたとおり、平安な義の実を結んだのです。私達が聖書の中の人を見るのなら、この剪定を受けずに実を結んだ者はいないのです。三つめ、それは私達のよく知るあの九つの実です。
御霊の実
『御霊の実は愛、喜び、平和、寛容、慈愛、善意、忠実、柔和、自制である』（ガラテヤ５章２２節、２３節）
ここには九つの実がありますが、一つ一つには深い意味があり、これらについては毎週、お話ししても語り尽くすことができません。これらの実はどこにも売っていませんし、また自分の力で結べるものではありません。そんなことないだろうと思いますのなら、試みてみたらいいかと思います。時経ずして、真実に自分の心を見つめるのなら、私達はこれらの実を結びうるものを何も持ちあわせていないということに気がつかされます。そうです、私達はがんばって喜んだり、寛容になることはできないのです。ですから、これらの実を、もし私達の生涯に結ぶことができるとするのなら、それはイエス・キリストに繋がることです。なぜなら、これらのものは全てイエスのうちにあるもので、イエスに繋がることにより、それらは私達の内にも注がれてくるからです。『わたしはぶどうの木、あなたがたはその枝である。もし人がわたしにつながっており、またわたしがその人とつながっておれば、その人は実を豊かに結ぶようになる。わたしから離れては、あなたがたは何一つできないからである』（ヨハネ１５章５節）と言われているとおりです。
私達がイエス様と結びつくのなら、まず私達は悔い改めの実を結ぶことでしょう。剪定もなされるでしょう。これらを通り、やがて私達は御霊の実を結んでいくのです。最後に福音の実というものをお話しましょう。
福音の実
『そして、この福音は、世界中いたる所でそうであるように、あなたがたのところでも、これを聞いて神の恵みを知ったとき以来、実を結んで成長しているのである』（コロサイ１章６節）
キリストに連なることにより、私達は悔い改めに導かれます。不必要なものが剪定されます。しかし、それにより御霊の実を結ぶ者とされます。やがてこの実はその人の内にだけにとどまらず、神の恵みを知る者達により、まことのブドウの木なるイエス・キリストのことが宣べ伝えられ、世界各地で福音の実を結んでいくのです。このことは言うまでもない、私達の世界で今も日常的に起きていることなのです。そして、今までお話してきました実を私達が結ぶことは神の御心なのです。
16あなたがたがわたしを選んだのではない。わたしがあなたがたを選んだのである。そして、あなたがたを立てた。それは、あなたがたが行って実をむすび、その実がいつまでも残るためであり、また、あなたがたがわたしの名によって父に求めるものはなんでも、父が与えて下さるためである。17これらのことを命じるのは、あなたがたが互に愛し合うためである（ヨハネ１５章１６節－１７節）。
聖書は神様が私達を選ばれたといいます。選ばれたということは、私達に命を与えられたということです。そして、それには目的があるのです。「人生の目的は何か」という問いに対する答えをかつて見出そうとされた方、今もそれを尋ね求めているという方がいましたら、おめでとうございます、今日、その方は答えをここに見出しました。そうです、私達が生きる目的は私達がキリストに繋がり、実を結ぶということです。私達がこの実を結ぶということは神のみ心に適ったことなのです。しかも、その実はいつまでも残るのだというのです。
今日、お話しましたマイケルチャンは既に現役を退いています。ペイン・スチュアートは既に主のもとにいます。私達はプロのスポーツ選手ではありませんが、私達の人生においては今も現役です。私達は今朝、神はなぜ私達に命を与え、今もそれを維持されているか、その理由についてお話しました。私達は自分では実を結ぶことができないような者でありますが、キリストに繋がることにより、実を結び、その実は自分だけにとどまらず世界に広がるのだということを見てまいりました。いかがでしょうか、こんなに生きがいに満ちた人生はないのではないでしょうか。私からはもう何もよいものなど実るはずはないとあきらめている方、いますか。確かにそうです、私達は自分の力では実を結ぶことはできないでしょう。しかし、キリストに繋がるのなら私達は豊かな実を結ぶことができるのです。お祈りしましょう。
Bearing Fruit in Your life

Let’s read today’s scripture: John 15:1-5. “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.
There are “authentic things” and “imitation things” in our world. Of course, we all want authentic things (true things). When we purchase something, we pay attention to whether it is real or not. We try not to choose a fake item, if it is possible. In this scripture, Jesus said that he is “the true vine”. Where does this metaphor come from? Actually, there is a historical aspect behind this Jesus’ word. Isaiah described “untrue vines” 750 years before Jesus said these words. Receiving God’s word, Isaiah told a parable of God as the master of the vineyard and the people of Israel as the vineyard, that is, the vines. Based on this Isaiah’s word, Jesus said, “I am the true vine”. This is what Isaiah chapter 5 says. It is a bit long, but let’s read it.
I will sing for the one I love
a song about his vineyard:
My loved one had a vineyard
on a fertile hillside.
2 He dug it up and cleared it of stones
and planted it with the choicest vines.
He built a watchtower in it
and cut out a winepress as well.
Then he looked for a crop of good grapes,
but it yielded only bad fruit.
3 “Now you dwellers in Jerusalem and people of Judah,
judge between me and my vineyard.
4 What more could have been done for my vineyard
than I have done for it?
When I looked for good grapes,
why did it yield only bad?
5 Now I will tell you
what I am going to do to my vineyard:
I will take away its hedge,
and it will be destroyed;
I will break down its wall,
and it will be trampled.
6 I will make it a wasteland,
neither pruned nor cultivated,
and briers and thorns will grow there.
I will command the clouds
not to rain on it.”
7 The vineyard of the Lord Almighty
is the nation of Israel,
and the people of Judah
are the vines he delighted in.
And he looked for justice, but saw bloodshed;
for righteousness, but heard cries of distress.
8 Woe to you who add house to house
and join field to field
till no space is left
and you live alone in the land.
9 The Lord Almighty has declared in my hearing:
“Surely the great houses will become desolate,
the fine mansions left without occupants.
10 A ten-acre vineyard will produce only a bath[a] of wine;
a homer of seed will yield only an ephah[c] of grain.”
11 Woe to those who rise early in the morning
to run after their drinks,
who stay up late at night
till they are inflamed with wine.
In here, the vineyard, that is, the vines represent the people of Israel. The master of the vineyard is God. God dug up the fertile hillside, and cleared it of stones, and planted it with the choicest vines. He also built a watchtower, yet it yielded only wild grapes and bad grapes. God blessed the nation of Israel, had been with them, protected them, and fulfilled their needs; yet, they yielded only bad fruit. God describes what he had done for the people of Israel by saying “What more could have been done for my vineyard than I have done for it?” God is saying that “I cared for Israel more than one can imagine”. Despite being in this environment, they bear bitter fruit. This is Israel, and this is us human beings.
Compared with these vines, Jesus said “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener”. In the parable of the vineyard, our heavenly Father is the master of the vineyard. In the parable of the vine and the branches, our heavenly Father is the gardener. What is common in both parables is that God is the manager of the vineyard, that is, the manager of the vine.
We are given what is necessary to live, by God; such as, Sun, plants and animals, family, friends, and above anything else, our life. This life cannot be replaced by anything else. In the eyes of God, that is “a fertile hillside, a well-maintained hillside, what more could have been done”. God provides everything we need. Yet, how much fruit do we bear in this environment?
Despite everything being in order, our heart is filled with dissatisfaction, anger, envy, and desire for anything we can think of. As a result, we bear bitter fruit. God’s grief, in the book of Isaiah, is God’s sorrow, towards humans in the modern society. Knowing that, Jesus spoke of the parable of the vine and the branches.
4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.
5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. (John 15:4-5)
The people of Israel had kept bearing bitter fruit even though they were given the best conditions, by God. It proved that people cannot bear good fruit by themselves. Therefore, Jesus said “No branch can bear fruit by itself” and “apart from me you can do nothing”.
Ken Nishikiori is a professional tennis player, who has been very successful for the last few years. Actually, Michael Chang his Chinese-American coach, is behind his success. As you may know, he used to be an active professional tennis player. He became the youngest male player to win a Grand Slam single title when he won the French Open in 1989 at the age of 17 years and 3 months. He is also a devout Christian. In the past, he attended a Sunday service at our church on his way to a mission trip to Mexico. He says as the following.
“I am not a very big player, in fact, I am too small to be a professional player, and also I don’t have enough power. I was told by others that I wouldn’t be a successful player. In fact, the professional world is very competitive so I feel powerless when I play against bigger players.” Despite these circumstances, he found more important things than physical abilities. That is, to have a relationship with God, and by doing so, he started to lead his life differently.
When he won the French Open at the age of 17, he could have been arrogant and flattered himself, but he didn’t. He didn’t become a captive to the temptations, which could come along with winning the title because he already set his focus on Jesus Christ. He said, “My success is not important compared to how Jesus touches people’s life. God gave me a gift ability to play tennis. Without Jesus, who gives me the strength, I wouldn’t be here today. When I play tennis with this vision, I can play freely, and also I entrust God with the result. I am confident because I know that everything is in God’s hand. The important thing, that I should do, is to dedicate my best to God. I might win the game, or I might lose the game. But, as long as I am focused on Jesus, I feel the joy within me that only Jesus can provide”.
I am sure, that even now, Michael keeps this relationship with Jesus Christ as he coaches Ken Nishikiori. I am certain, if Michael happens to choose a special memorable day in his life, he would choose the day he, a branch, remained in Jesus, the vine; not the day he won a major event.
Exactly, how Michael leads his life is like in verse 8, “This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples”. Whether he wins the game or loses the game that is to God’s glory. This is to heavenly Father’s glory, that we bear fruit. What kind of fruit can we bear if we remain in Jesus? Let’s look into what the Bible says. Frist of all, we bear the fruit of repentance if we remain in Jesus.
The Fruit of repentance
8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ (Luke3:8)
Frist of all, some of you may be caught by surprise when you hear the fruit of repentance. Why repentance? Jesus said, “Remain in me”. You understand this when you remain in the true life. You must take into account the existence of what’s within you, that is different from the true life. When my oldest son was born, he had newborn jaundice; yes, his skin turned yellow. I heard that there are multiple reasons that cause new-born jaundice. One of them is a blood type incompatibility between the mother and baby. When we remain in Jesus Christ, our heart would react to Jesus because he is something new that we did not have before he entered within us. Let me explain what it means to you. If we become Christians and remain in Jesus Christ, we would realize what we should not do before God; something that we used to think was acceptable. The Bible calls this sin. By remaining in Jesus, we realize that sin is, naturally, alien to us. Jesus said “I am the vine”, but he also said “I am the light of the world”. When you get close to a bright light, you can spot particles of dust easily. As long as you stay away from the light, you don’t notice the dust. If we remain in Jesus, we have no choice, but bearing the fruit of repentance.
I talked to you about the tennis player earlier on. I have a one more story to tell. The next one is about a golfer. Payne Stewart was a professional golfer. He died in plane crash in 1999. The Yomiuri Shinbun, one of the leading national newspapers in Japan, wrote an article about his death. The headline of the article said “Repentance ∙Stewart” in large letters. (It is very rare to see the word “repentance” in Japanese newspaper articles.) When he won the 1991 U.S. Open, his mother said he was rude and his wife said he was arrogant. His caddie commented that he was impatient and not very self-confident. He was well-known to be an extremely rude golfer. However, he accepted Christ a few years before his death, and he began to believe in Christ. He wore a WWJD bracelet on his wrist, and he began to read the Bible every day. WWJD stands for What would Jesus Do? As if he was born again, he became a humble man.
(From Golf.com article) Payne enjoyed the trophy, too, but he seemed to get a bigger kick from the look of happiness on [his wife] Tracey’s face. “There used to be a void in my life,” he said, recalling a time when he would sooner kick a neighbour than love one. “The peace I have now is so wonderful. I don’t understand how I lived so long without it.”
Why did this kind of change happen to him? That’s because, he remained in Jesus Christ.
If you are going to start a new life, you need to redeem the life you’ve had so far. You would see many things once you start redeeming it, won’t you? You would find a debt, which is, clearly marked in red. In the past our eyes were blind, thus we could not even find the debt we owed. However, if we remain in Jesus, we will see the debt.
Payne bore the fruit of repentance before he received true peace in his life. Ephesians 2: 3 says, 3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh[a] and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. And later on in the chapter, Ephesians 2: 13 says, 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought nearby the blood of Christ. What have we been brought close to? The Bible says we have been brought close to Jesus Christ. That’s right, once we used to live away from God, but now we remain in the vine, Jesus. The second fruit is “the fruit of peace”.
Bearing the fruit of peace with discipline
11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. (Hebrews 12:11)
We hope to bear the fruit that Jesus has promised us. However, in order to bear much fruit, there is one more necessary process remaining. Jesus said, 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes[a] so that it will be even more fruitful. That’s right. We, who remained in Christ, are being pruned by God sometimes. Pruning is trimming buds, flowers, branches, and leaves to increase fruitfulness. Without pruning, important nutrients won’t reach the most important part of a plant or a tree. Not only that, without pruning a tree, it will compromise the general look of the tree, will provide harmful insects a home, will increase disease problems; all of which won’t benefit the tree. In the book of Hebrews, the “pruning” is called “discipline”.
I have been to Yamanashi for pick-your-own grapes before. Knowing Jesus’ word, I asked the manager of the vineyard if they really prune the vines. Surely, the branches would be pruned at the end of harvest season, and only the trunk and a few branches would remain; it would look pitiful after pruning. Vines less than 3 years old are not allowed to bear fruit, and are pruned continuously during their first 3 years. By doing this, they will store life within them, and then they will bear many delicious fruits in the future.
Everyone in Christ receives this pruning from God. Paul said that no pruning seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. This pruning will, once again, make us open up the Bible, and then lead to prayer. When that happens, we have a pitiful look, however, when the time comes, we will bear and harvest much fruit.
Two weeks ago, I talked to you about peace. Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you”. Right after Jesus said the word, his disciples betrayed Jesus, and then spent some time regretting and hating themselves for what they have done. Peter was especially overconfident with his ability. However, God pruned his misconceptions without mercy. If these thoughts stayed within him, they would have interfered with him bearing fruit in Christ. Exactly what Jesus said, “No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful”. I don’t think Peter was at peace, not even a bit when that happened. However, after going through this kind of discipline, he bore the fruit of righteousness and peace, as Jesus said, “Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it”. When we look at the people in the Bible, no one bore any fruit without God’s pruning. Thirdly, I will talk to you about the nine fruits that you all know very well.
The fruit of the spirit
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. (Galatians 5: 22-23)
These nine fruit, each of which has a deep meaning, I cannot tell you about enough, even if I talk to you about it every Sunday. These fruit cannot be bought at any stores; you cannot bear it by yourself, either. If you doubt it, please try doing so. Very soon, we will realize that we have nothing in order to bear these fruit if we truly look into our heart. We cannot try to be joyful nor try to forbear. Therefore, it’s possible for us to bear these fruit in our life only if we remain in Jesus Christ. Because all of these fruit are within Jesus, they will pour into us when we remain in him. Exactly what is said in John 15:5, 5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.
If we remain in Jesus, first we will bear the fruit of repentance. And then, we will be pruned. By going through this, we will soon begin to bear the fruit of the spirit. Lastly, let me talk to you about the fruit of the gospel.
The fruit of the gospel
6 that has come to you. In the same way, the gospel is bearing fruit and growing throughout the whole world—just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and truly understood God’s grace. (Colossians 1:6)
By remaining in Christ, we will lead into repentance. Unnecessary things will be pruned. However, by doing so, we will be the one who bear the fruit of the spirit. Soon this fruit will be growing throughout the whole world by spreading the gospel of the true vine, Jesus Christ, by not only the person who bears the fruit, but also among people who understand God’s grace. Even now, this has been happening continuously in our world. And, bearing fruit that we talked about today, is God’s will.
16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. 17 This is my command: Love each other. (John 15:16-17)
The Bible says that God chose us. Chosen means he gave us our lives. And it has its purpose. If you’ve ever tried discover “What the purpose of your life is?” in the past or are still trying to find it out, I congratulate you for finding the answer today. That’s right, the purpose of your life is to remain in Christ and bear fruit. We bear this fruit to meet God’s will. Not only that, the fruit shall remain eternally.
Michael Chang has already retired as an active professional tennis player. Payne Stewart is already with the Lord. We are not professional sport players, but we are active in our lives. Today, we talked about the reasons why God gave us life and he maintains it even now. We’ve seen that we cannot bear fruit by ourselves. However, by remaining in Christ, we bear the fruit and it will grow throughout the whole world. How do you feel about it? What fulfilled lives we have! Has anyone given up already thinking you won’t bear anything good any longer? Surely, that is true, we do not have the ability to bear the fruit by ourselves, yet, if we remain in Christ, we will bear much fruit. Let us pray.
