イエス様が十字架の上で言われた「完了する」という言葉は、新約聖書の原語であるギリシア語では「全額支払い済み」という商業用語なのだということが分かります・・・。これはいったいどういうことなのでしょうか。

「代価は支払われました」

イエス・キリストが十字架にかけられ、そのところで語られた言葉が七つあります。最初に語られた三つの言葉はすべて他者に関するもので、以降、息を引き取るまでの間に言われた言葉は４つあり、それらはご自身について語っています。
私達は第一の言葉として「父よ、彼らをお赦しください。彼らは何をしているのか自分ではわからないのです」（ルカ２３章３４節）というイエス様を十字架にかけた者達への執り成しの祈りを見、第二の言葉として「まことに、あなたに告げます。あなたは今日、わたしと共にパラダイスにいます」（ルカ２３章４３節）とご自身と共に十字架につけられていた犯罪人に語られた言葉を見てまいりました。第三の言葉として母マリアに向かい、「婦人よ、ごらんなさい。これはあなたの子です」（ヨハネ１９章２６節）と言われ、愛弟子に向かい「ごらんなさい。これはあなたの母です」（ヨハネ１９章２７節）と言われ、大地が暗闇に包まれた時、「エリ、エリ、レマ、サバクタニ」、すなわち「わが神、わが神、どうしてわたしをお見捨てになったのですか」と大声で叫ばれました。そして、先週は「わたしは、かわく」という言葉を見、イエス様が受けられた痛みというものがどのようなものであったかということをお話ししました。
そして、今日お話しますのは六つ目の言葉です。『29そこに、酢いぶどう酒がいっぱい入れてある器がおいてあったので、人々は、このぶどう酒を含ませた海綿をヒソプの茎に結びつけて、イエスの口もとにさし出した。30すると、イエスはそのぶどう酒を受けて「すべてが終った」と言われ、首をたれて息をひきとられた』（ヨハネ１９章２９節―３０節）
先週、十字架にかかる前に、苦いブドウ酒をイエス様は口にされなかったとお話しました。それは、ご自身の肉体の痛みを緩和させることなく、それを全身で受け止める決意であったとお話しました。しかし、今日の箇所では十字架上でイエス様は差し出された酔いブドウ酒を受け取られたと書かれています。なぜ、ここでそれを受けたのか。それは既にその渇きが限界であり、出血により全身の力をも失われていく時に、最後の言葉を語るにも、その前に口を潤さないと声が出ないという状況にあったからです。ゆえに、その酔いぶどう酒を口にされてから最後の言葉、「すべてが終わった」と力をふりしぼるように言われたのです。
この言葉は新改訳聖書では「完了した」、新共同訳聖書では「成し遂げられた」と書かれております。ここでイエス様が言われた言葉は「全てが終わってしまった、これで万事休す」というような意味ではなく、あることが終了した、完了したという意味であり、「完了した」というからには、その言葉の背後には「始まり」というものがあり、完了するまでのプロセスがあったということが分かります。そうです、ここでイエス・キリストが言われた「完了」という言葉はまさしく神の天地創造から始まり、この時の十字架にいたるまでのことが完了したということなのです。
建物を建築する方達は工程というものをたてるでしょう。土地の審査から始まり、コンクリートを打ったり、土台を作り、壁を作り、内装を整えたり、毎日、毎週、毎月なすべきことがありますでしょう。そして、それはある日に向かっているのです。そうです、その建物が完成する日です。その時にこの工事は完了するのです。
さらにイエス様が言われたこの「完了する」という言葉を詳しく調べてみますと、新約聖書の原語であるギリシア語ではこの「完了する」は「テテレスタイ」という言葉を使っており、それは「全額支払い済み」という商業用語なのだということが分かります。
ということは世の初めから何かしら未払いのものがあり、イエス・キリストは自らの十字架の死によってそれらを完済した、そう実に、その時に「全ての代価は支払われた」ということをイエス様は言われて息を引き取られたのです。
聖書を読む時にその言葉は私達の脳裏にイメージを抱かせます。ヨセフがエジプトに売られていく場面、イスラエルの民が荒野で暮らす風景、ダビデがゴリアテを倒す光景、ルツが落穂を拾う姿、私達はテレビを見ているようにそれらをイメージします。
不思議なことは聖書の６６巻、その著者は４０人にもおよび、最初に書かれた書と最後に書かれた書の間には実に１５００年もの年月があり、その４０人の著者は当然、そのほとんとが会ったこともない者達で、編集会議などがもたれたこともありませんのに、この聖書６６巻は一つの連続した物語であり、その物語は一つのものに向かっていたのです。普通で考えたらありえないそんなことが分かってきますと、この背後には何があるのだろうと思わざるをえないのです。背後にはどんなからくりがあるのかとその舞台裏を見てみたいと思うのです。そして、ここにきてイエス・キリストは「完了した」と言われている。いったい何が完了したのだろうかと私達はその物語に思いを寄せるのです。
主にある皆さん、旧約聖書の天地創造も、ノアの洪水も、バベルの塔も、出エジプトも、ダビデやソロモンにおけるイスラエルという国の歩みも、諸々の預言者たちのはたらきも、その全てはこの十字架に向かっていたのです。そうです、それは神の一人子が十字架にかかり、全人類のために十字架にかかり、死ぬということです。
現在、世界で一番高いビルはどこにあるかご存知ですか。アラブ首長国連邦にあるブルジュ・ハリフアが世界で一番、高いビルだそうです。どれくらいの高さかご存知ですか。８２８メートルもあるそうです。私が子供の頃、アジアで一番、高いビルは池袋にありますサンシャイン６０で、その高さは２３９メートルありました。それに比べたらすごい高さです。しかし、宇宙規模で考えますのなら、これらのビルもゴマ粒の上にある埃のようなものです。いくら人間の技術と言いましても、その程度であります。
ビルは目に見えますから仰ぐことができます。しかし、人間がこれまで犯した罪も今、犯し続けている罪を全て見ることはできません。しかし、もしそれを全てチャートで見ることができるとしましたら、そのおびただしい、まさしく無数の罪に私達は圧倒されてしまうことでしょう。もしかしたら他人事のように聞かれている方がいるかもしれませんが、それは私達が呪いの言葉を口にした日のことや、私達が何かをごまかした日のことを言っているのです。
最初の人、アダムとイブの息子、カインが弟を殺した時、神はこう言われました『あなたの弟の血の声が土の中からわたしに叫んでいます』（創世記４章１０節）。私達にはその声が聞こえませんが、もしその声が聞こえるとしますのなら、わたしたちはいたるところでその叫びを耳にすることでしょう。そして、その血の叫びに対して、イエス様は自らの血の代価を払われたのです。
聖書を手に取ってみますとお分かりのように、聖書は旧約聖書と新約聖書に区別されています。その新約聖書はまさしくイエス・キリストにある新しい契約を意味するものです。それではそれ以前の旧約聖書は主に何について書かれているかといいますと、神が人に与えました律法について書かれているのです。
当初、人間の間には今日のようは法律はありませんでした。ゆえにこの世界はある意味、無茶苦茶でした。ですから、まず神様がなされたことはその無法地帯であるこの世界に「越えてはならない」「守るべきもの」を与えたのです。そして、その時から世界が一変したのです。何が変わったのでしょうか。その変化についてパウロは明確にこう書いてます。
「律法が与えられる前にも罪は世にあったが、律法がなければ罪は罪と認められない」（ローマ５章１３節）
要するに罪はそのことに対する規定がない限り、罪として認められないということです。律法、すなわち基準がなければそれが罪であるとすら私達は決められないのです。このようにして律法は私達を打ち砕きます。なぜなら、律法は私達の罪を明らかにするだけで、その先には何の解決もそこにはないからです。「赤信号は渡ってはいけない」と言っても「渡ってしまう者に対する解決」を法律は与えていないのです。それは私達に「しなければならない」、「してはならない」ということを示しますが、「することができない、してしまった」時の解決がないのです。まさしく、そのことをパウロはこう書き記しているではないですか。
『19 では、律法とはいったい何か。律法は、約束を与えられたあの子孫が来られるときまで、違犯を明らかにするために付け加えられたもので・・・』（ガラテヤの信徒への手紙３章１９節）
そうです、律法とは約束を与えられたあの子孫が来られるまで、違反を明らかにするものでありました。「約束を与えられたあの子孫」とは誰のことでしょうか。そうです、主イエス・キリストです。
さらにパウロは続けます。21 万一、人を生かすことができる律法が与えられたとするなら、確かに人は律法によって義とされたでしょう。22 しかし、聖書はすべてのものを罪の支配下に閉じ込めたのです。それは、神の約束が、イエス・キリストへの信仰によって、信じる人々に与えられるようになるためでした。23 信仰が現れる前には、わたしたちは律法の下で監視され、この信仰が啓示されるようになるまで閉じ込められていました。24 こうして律法は、わたしたちをキリストのもとへ導く養育係となったのです。わたしたちが信仰によって義とされるためです。25 しかし、信仰が現れたので、もはや、わたしたちはこのような養育係の下にはいません』（ガラテヤ３章１９節ー２５節）。
そうです、イエス以前に人に与えられた律法は完成ではなくて、人がイエス・キリストになるまでに必要な養育係りとなって、私達を導いたのです。そう、それは「神の約束がイエス・キリストへの信仰によって、信じる人々に与えられるようになるため」でした。
このことを十二分に理解し、ご自身のなすべき役目を承知しておられたイエス様はその宣教活動の初期に既にご自身がこれから成そうとしていることについて語っていたではありませんか。『17わたしが律法や預言者を廃するためにきた、と思ってはならない。廃するためではなく、成就するためにきたのである。18よく言っておく。天地が滅び行くまでは、律法の一点、一画もすたることはなく、ことごとく全うされるのである』（マタイ５章１７節ー１８節）。そうです、イエス様は養育係りを廃するために、来たのではなくて成就するために来たのです。
主にある皆さん、私達が神について、人について、イエス・キリストにある救いについて、聖書はそれらが完了したという神と人の物語を私達に示すものです。そして、ふと気がつくと、私達もその物語の只中にいるということに気がつかされるのです。そうです、そしてそんな私達の足は最後にカルバリにたてられた十字架の前に導かれていくのです。
『地の果なるもろもろの人よ、わたしを仰ぎのぞめ、そうすれば救われる。わたしは神であって、ほかに神はないからだ』（イザヤ４５章２２節）。
お祈りしましょう。
“The debt was paid”

There are seven phrases Jesus said on the cross. The first three was about others and the other four was about him self.
So far, I have talked about the first phrases, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34), as an intercessional prayer for those who crucified him, and the second phrases, “I tell you the truth; today you will be with me in paradise.” (Luke 23:43), that was spoken to the criminal who was crucified with him. And the third phrase, “Dear woman, here is your son.”, and “Here is your mother.” (John 19:26, 27), that were spoken to his mother Mary and his disciple John respectively. And last week, I talked about the fourth phrase, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?”, which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:45, 46) that Jesus cried out in a loud voice about himself , and then Jesus said “I am thirsty”. We have pondered about his pain by those words.
Today, let’s look at the sixth phrase, the words that were spoken by Jesus on the cross. 29 A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. (John 19:29-30).
I talked last week about how Jesus did not drink wine vinegar. He refused to release his pain by the wine vinegar, and he accepts all the pain he had to take. But he had received the drink at this time. Why did he receive that drink? Because he already lost a lot of blood and because of his thirst, he could not say even one word. Therefore he needed some liquid for his mouth to say, “It is finished”.
Jesus said, “It is finished”. In the New Translation Japanese Bible it saids, “it is done” and in another translation it is written, “it is accomplished”. What Jesus said right here is not like “it was done, we are lost and conquered”, no, it meant “it was accomplished”. When we use the word “Accomplishment” this means there is a beginning and a process to finish. Yes, the accomplishment Jesus spoke of, was begun with the creation of the Universe and was finished at the cross.
When a building is built, we begin with the inspection of the land, make foundation and wall and so on. There are so many things to do every day and every week, and it will continue until it is finish.
If we examine the meaning of “the finish” in Greek, which is the original language of New Testament, the word is TETELESTAI, and this is a merchant term that means “Paid Everything”.
These facts tells us there is something unpaid since the beginning of this world and Jesus paid that all, yes that is the meaning of “It is finished”.
As we read the Bible, the words give us an image. The scene of Joseph being sold as a slave in Egypt, the scene of the Israelites lives in the wilderness, the scene of David striking Goliath with a stone, the scene of Ruth picking the kernel in the field, we make images like we watch TV.
The Bible consists of 66 books and about 40 authors. There are 1500 years between the time the first book was written and the last. These forty people never met before and of course they did not have an editor’s meeting, but all 66 books are connected and all point to one thing.
This should not possibly happen, it is impossible, but when we realize the fact, we have to think about the background of the story. We want to see the scenario behind the scene. Now when Jesus said “It is finished”. We wonder what was finished in the story.
Dear brothers and sisters, the creation, the flood of Noah, The Babel, Exodus, Israel reigned by David and Solomon, and all the works of the prophet was going toward the cross. The story went towards the son of God who was crucified and died for us.
Do you know what is the highest building in the world? It is the building in the Dubai, UAE, and the name is Burj Khalifa. Do you know how tall it is? It is 828 meters (about a half mile). When I was a little child, the highest building in Asia was Sunshine 60 in Ikebukuro, Tokyo that was 239 meters. The Burj Khalif is an amazing height compared to Sunshine 60. But when we scale the buildings in the universe it is only a tiny dust on a sesame seed. This is human technology.
We can physically look at a building, but we cannot see all of our sins since our beginning. If we can see the chart of our all sins, we will be overwhelmed by the countless sins. Maybe some of us wonder what I am talking about right now and think nothing is related with you, but I am talking about the day we curse and the day we cheat.
When the first man and woman, Adam and Eve’s son Cain killed his brother, The Lord said “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground (Genesis 4:10). We cannot hear the blood cries out from the ground, but if we had been able to hear it, we will hear the cries everywhere, and Jesus paid His blood for this.
As you know, the Bible consists of the New and Old Testament. The New Testament is the meaning of New Covenant, and the covenant was introduced by Jesus Christ. The Old Testament was about the law God gave to the people.
The people did not have laws in the beginning. Therefore our world was absurd, and because of that God gave us boundaries we should not cross the things we have to keep. Since that moment, everything was changed. What was changed? Paul wrote about the change.
13 To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not charged against anyone’s account where there is no law (Romans 5:13).
Our sins are not admitted if there are no rules. If we do not have the law, we cannot define what is sin. The law breaks us because the law makes it clear that there is no solution for our sins. The law teaches us “Do not cross the street when it is a red light”, but the law will not give us the solution after we cross the red light. They teach us the things we have to do and things we should not to do, but no solution when we have broken the law. Paul was talking about this in the book of Galatians.
19 Why, then, was the law given at all? It was added because of transgressions until the Seed to whom the promise referred had come. (Galatians 3:19).
The law made clear transgressions until the Seed had come. Who is the Seed? Yes, the Seed is Jesus Christ.
Paul mentioned further more about the Law and Christ.
21 Is the law, therefore, opposed to the promises of God? Absolutely not! For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come by the law. 22 But Scripture has locked up everything under the control of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ,
might be given to those who believe. 23 Before the coming of this faith, we were held in custody under the law, locked up until the faith that was to come would be revealed. 24 So the law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith. 25 Now that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian (Galatians 3:21-25)
Yes, the law given before Christ is not perfect, but the law was a guardian before Christ. Yes this is so the promise of God would, through faith in Jesus Christ, be given to anyone who believes.
Jesus himself had understood this, and he knew what he was supposed to do. Therefore he already mentioned about this in his earlier days; 17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished (Matthew 5:17-18). Yes, he came to our place not to abolish the guardian but fulfill the guardian.
Dear brothers and sisters, the Bible is talking about the story of God and man. The book is talking about the salvation in Jesus Christ , and we realize we are also living in the story. We are led to the cross on the Calvary.
“Turn to me and be saved, all you ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other. (Isaiah 45:22)
