私達は知っています「一大事」とは「これぐらいのことはいいだろう」というところから既に始まっているということを。それは「これぐらいのこと」ですから、そのことによってどんなことが起きつつあるのかというこをその時の私達は自覚しません。しかし、そんな「これぐらいのことはいいだろう」という日々はやがて私達を取り返しのつかないところへと導いていきます。いったいどれだけの人達がこのことにおいて悔いていることでしょうか。イスラエルの民の結末がどうなったのかということを今、私達は聖書を通して知ることが出来ます。彼らは妥協したものにより、自らに滅亡を招きました。神がヨシュアに警告したことは正しかったのです。どうして、私達がイスラエルのこの失敗を貴重な教訓として心に刻まないでおくことができましょうか。

今、立ち止まって確認すべきこと ２０１６年３月１３日
先週はモーセが一人でシナイ山に登ったということをみました。時に私達は主の前に一人出るということが大切だということをお話しました。このことは聖書の中に出てくる人々が皆、なしてきたことでした。そして、今日、見ていきたいと願っております人はモーセのはたらきを継いだヨシュアであります。
モーセは神様から示されているカナンの地にイスラエルの民を導くべくエジプトを脱出しました。しかし、モーセも人間、この地に別れを告げる日がきます。モーセは約束の地、カナンに踏み入る前に彼の従者ヨシュアに全てを託して、神のもとに帰らなければならなかったのです。そう、そのことはモーセの思いではなく主の指示でありました『18神の霊のやどっているヌンの子ヨシュアを選び、あなたの手をその上におき、19彼を祭司エレアザルと全会衆の前に立たせて、彼らの前で職に任じなさい。20そして彼にあなたの権威を分け与え、イスラエルの人々の全会衆を彼に従わせなさい』（民数記２７章１８節ー１９節）。モーセには子供はいましたが、モーセはその時に世襲を選ばずに神の示されたヨシュアを後継者として定めました。ここには普通にそのことが書かれていますが、この世ではこのことは難しいことであり、このことがなされずに時に私達の世界は混乱し、骨肉の争いが起きることがあります。
私達はこのモーセとヨシュアの世代交代から私達一人一人は神様から与えられた一つの時代にしか生きることができない者であるということを知ります。すなわち私達は先代の人達が築いたものを引き継ぎ、それに私達が成し遂げることができたことをつけ加え、次の世代に引き継いでいく役割を負っているということです。
ヨシュアはその時までモーセのもとでその背中から多くのことを学んできました。モーセもその日が来ることを知っておりましたからヨシュアに大切な経験を学ぶ機会を与えました。そんな経験の一つにイスラエルにとっての最大の敵、アマレク人との戦いがありました。その時のことを出エジプト記１７章９節－１６節はこう記しています。
9モーセはヨシュアに言った「われわれのために人を選び、出てアマレクと戦いなさい。わたしは明日、神のつえを手に取って、丘の頂に立つであろう」。10ヨシュアはモーセが彼に言ったようにし、アマレクと戦った。モーセとアロンおよびホルは丘の頂に登った。11モーセが手を上げているとイスラエルは勝ち、手を下げるとアマレクが勝った。12しかしモーセの手が重くなったので、アロンとホルが石を取って、モーセの足もとに置くと、彼はその上に座した。そしてひとりはこちらに、ひとりはあちらにいて、モーセの手をささえたので、彼の手は日没までさがらなかった。13ヨシュアは、つるぎにかけてアマレクとその民を打ち敗った。14主はモーセに言われた、「これを書物にしるして記念とし、それをヨシュアの耳に入れなさい。わたしは天が下からアマレクの記憶を完全に消し去るであろう」。15モーセは一つの祭壇を築いてその名を「主はわが旗」と呼んだ。16そしてモーセは言った、「主の旗にむかって手を上げる、主は世々アマレクと戦われる」。
モーセに命じられたようにヨシュアはアマレクとの戦いに出ました。彼は綿密な戦略をたて、日ごろから訓練した者達と共に戦いに臨んだことでしょう。そして、その戦いに勝利をとりました。もしかしたら、その時にモーセがいなくとも自分達でもやっていけると思ったかもしれません。しかし、意気揚々と自陣に帰ってみると、自分達が戦っている間中、モーセが手を挙げて神様に祈っていたということ、すなわちモーセがその祈りの手を挙げている時にはイスラエルが勝ち、手を下げるとアマレクが勝ったということを知らされたのです。それゆえに、その戦の勝利はヨシュアとその軍隊の力によるのではなくて、ひとえにモーセの祈りに応えた神様の力によるものであったということを彼は知るのです。
そして主はモーセに「これを書物に記して記念とし、それをヨシュアの耳に入れなさい」（１４）と言われました。そうです、これからヨシュアはモーセなき後、リーダーとして諸々の困難に向き合っていくことになるだろう、もしかしたら恐れと不安で眠れぬ日々を送るかもしれない。その時にこの書物を読み返すことにより、戦の勝敗は戦術や兵士の力によるのではなく、神の力によるのだということを思い起こすことでしょう。イスラエルのリーダーとなるべき者、その者が知らなければならない最も大切なことは実にこのことだったのです。
詩篇２０篇はイスラエルの二代目の王であったダビデによって書かれたものですが、それは王の出陣式に祭司が捧げた取り成しの祈りが原型となっていると言われています。その中に「ある者は戦車を誇り、ある者は馬を誇る。しかしわれらはわれらの神、主の御名を誇る」（７）という言葉が書かれています。ダビデは確かに偉大な王でした。しかし、彼もその力は自分のものではなくて、誇るべきものは自分が所有しているものではなくて、神であるということを知っていました。
この度、エルサレムの神殿の丘と嘆きの壁に行きました。神殿の丘には現在、エルサレムの風景の中には必ず出てくる黄金のイスラムのモスクが建てられています。そこはかつてアブラハムがイサクを捧げた場所であり、また後にイエス様も行かれた神殿のあった場所です。現在、そのモスクの周りにはイスラム教徒が集まってき、モスクでの礼拝もなされています。そして、そのイスラムのモスクの下にはあの有名な嘆きの壁があり、そこではユダヤ人が壁に顔をすりつけながら熱心な祈りを捧げています。彼らの祈りとは彼らの上にあるそのイスラムのモスクが建っているところに再び神殿が建つことなのです。彼らはひたすらそのことを祈っているのです。
でも、不思議に思いませんか。そんなに神殿が再びそこに建つことを熱心に願ってるのなら、なぜ神殿を自力で奪回しないのかと。そのことは可能なことです（確かにそれをしたらエルサレムのみならず、イスラエルは多くの敵国に取り囲まれ大変なことになるでしょう）。しかし、彼らは自分達の力で神殿を建てようとは願っていないのです。そうです、彼らは神ご自身がそのことを成してくださることを信じ、壁に向かって祈っているのです。このような現在の彼らの姿に聖書の中に記されている信仰があらわれているのだと教えられました。
ゼカリヤ４章６節には「これは権勢によらず、能力によらず、わたしの霊によるのである」とありますが、まさしく私達が成そうとすることは私達の権力や勢いによるのではなく、神の力であるということを私達も心に刻もうではありませんか。
さて、このヨシュア記には血なまぐさい戦が数多く記されており、その中には「その民を滅ぼしつくしなさい」というような厳しい言葉があります。このような言葉に対して私達は「なぜ、聖書にこのような言葉が記されているのか」というような思いをもちます。神は戦争を肯定するのかと思われる方もいるかもしれません。今朝はこのことにも向き合ってみたいと思います。申命記７章１節‐６節に神様がモーセの口を通して、カナンに入る前のイスラエルの民に語った言葉が記録されています。
1あなたの神、主が、あなたの行って取る地にあなたを導き入れ、多くの国々の民、ヘテびと、ギルガシびと、アモリびと、カナンびと、ペリジびと、ヒビびと、およびエブスびと、すなわちあなたよりも数多く、また力のある七つの民を、あなたの前から追いはらわれる時、2すなわちあなたの神、主が彼らをあなたに渡して、これを撃たせられる時は、あなたは彼らを全く滅ぼさなければならない。彼らとなんの契約をもしてはならない。彼らに何のあわれみをも示してはならない。3また彼らと婚姻をしてはならない。あなたの娘を彼のむすこに与えてはならない。かれの娘をあなたのむすこにめとってはならない。4それは彼らがあなたのむすこを惑わしてわたしに従わせず、ほかの神々に仕えさせ、そのため主はあなたがたにむかって怒りを発し、すみやかにあなたがたを滅ぼされることとなるからである。5むしろ、あなたがたはこのように彼らに行わなければならない。すなわち彼らの祭壇をこぼち、その石の柱を撃ち砕き、そのアシラ像を切り倒し、その刻んだ像を火で焼かなければならない。6あなたはあなたの神、主の聖なる民である。あなたの神、主は地のおもてのすべての民のうちからあなたを選んで、自分の宝の民とされた。
ヨシュアはモーセ亡き後もこの言葉をそのまま実行し、ことごとくカナンにいた国々の民を滅ぼしていきます。そんな彼の姿を注意深く見ていく時に気がつかされることがあります。
それはヨシュアがイスラエルのリーダーとして常に心に刻みこんでいたことは自分達はいつも敵の前にいるのだということだったということです。モーセの従者として仕えていた時から、ヨシュアの心には常にその思いがあったゆえに、彼はイスラエルの民と共にカナンの地を獲得していくことができたのです。そしてその敵の前にいるということについてヨシュアが徹したことは妥協をしないということでした。そう、彼はモーセのもとで勝利の秘訣は神にあり、その神が「滅ぼしつくせ」と命じた言葉の真意を知っていたのです。それではその言葉に裏づけられていた神の真意とは何だったのでしょうか。
これらのことはこのことを守り続けたヨシュアの死後に明らかになります。そう、すなわちヨシュア亡き後の人々はこのヨシュアが守り続けてきたことをやめたので、そのことは明らかになったのです。ヨシュアが守り通したことについて、妥協をし始めた者達がどうなっていったかということが士師記３章５節から７節に記されています。
「イスラエル人は、カナン人、ヘテ人、エモリ人、ペリジ人、ヒビ人、エブス人の間に住んで、彼らの娘たちを自分たちの妻にめとり、また自分たちの娘を彼らの息子たちに与え、彼らの神々に仕えた。こうして、イスラエル人は、主の目の前に悪を行ない、彼らの神、主を忘れて、バアルやアシェラに仕えた」
ヨシュアが獲得したカナンの地は肥沃な場所ですので、その所ではその土地に定住して農耕生活を営む事が十分に可能でした。農耕によって生きる者達には生活の安定がうまれてきます。かつて荒野において遊牧生活をしていた彼らにとりましてまさしくそれは豊かな生活でした。そして農作をするからには当然、誰しも豊作を求めるわけでして、その土地からどれだけの農産物を収穫できるかということが彼らの大きな関心であり、それゆえに豊作となるようにと人間が作った神々がカナンには乱立していたのです。神様がヨシュアに命じられた「滅ぼしつくせ」という言葉は実にこの神々に彼らが仕えることがないようにと命じられた言葉だったのです。
この度、イスラエルで学んだことの一つは極端な信仰がもつ弊害です。ユダヤ人の中でも極めて保守的な人達は今日、働くことをせず、一生、律法を学んで暮らしています。彼らは税金も払わず、兵役につくこともありません。自分のなすべき義務や責任を全く果たすことなく、ただ律法の学びだけをしているのです。ですからイスラエルにおいて彼らはひんしゅくを買い、国民の中で完全に浮いてしまっているのです。運転規則を守ることもありません。なぜなら、運転規則なるものは彼らの律法にはないのです。当然です、今から３０００年前に車などありませんから。イスラエルはイスラムの国々に囲まれており、常に緊張があります。しかし、話をうかがっておりますと今日イスラエルの中では他国のことを理解しようという考えが主流となりつつあるといいます。でもこのように極端な人達が自分達と文化や信条の異なる人達に何かをしてしまうと一
申し上げていますようにカナンの土着の神々に同化してしまうことこそがイスラエルの民にとって最大の危機でありました。今までの不安定な生活が安定し、それ自体は喜ばしいことなのですが、同時に彼らは最も大切なものを失っていく危機に直面するのです。その結果、彼らの間に偶像礼拝がはびこり、不法がはびこり、最後には彼らに与えられていた安定と豊かさをも失っていきます。
考古学者たちがカナンの地にあった偶像について、その遺跡によって発見したところによりますと、そこには豊穣神としてのバアルやアシュラの神に犠牲として捧げられた子供の遺体が収められた壷が多数発見されたり、神殿には性器が誇張された彫刻があり、その神殿では巫女と称した女性達が売春をしており、その時代の性的混乱が分かったといいます。豊作を求める土地では人の性も神秘的な実りとして考えられ、必ずといっていいほど、このような性器に対する信仰が生まれ、そこでは秩序のない性的な堕落が起きてきます。今日の歴史家が指摘しているように、歴史に興った大国の末期には大抵、信じがたい性的混乱が起きたといいます。それは国が立つか倒れるかの印となっていたのです。カナンの町々を発掘した考古学者達はその発掘されたものを見て始めて、なぜ神がこの町々を滅ぼしつくせと言われたかということがよく分かったというのです。
以来、このカナンの偶像神、バアルとアシュラはイスラエルにとって常に災いの種となっていきます。ヨシュア記の後に記されている士師記にはイスラエルの民達がこの神々への礼拝に陥り、自らを窮地に追い込み、落ちるところまで落ちていく４００年にもおよぶ暗黒の年月が記録されているのです。
主にある皆さん、神様がイスラエルに望まれたのは“今だけ神の民である”ということではなく、“神の民であり続ける”ということであり、そのためには異教の神々を排除しなければならなかったのです。神様はそこにある異教の神々に気をつけろと言われたのではないのです。なぜなら神様は私達の性質をよく知っているからです。神の御心ではないものが私達と隣り合わせで残っているということが私達にとってどんなに大きなリスクであるかということを。

先ほど読みました申命記７章６節には「あなたはあなたの神、主の聖なる民である。あなたの神、主は地のおもてのすべての民のうちからあなたを選んで、自分の宝の民とされた」と書かれています。もし、私達のことを宝のように思っている人がいて、その宝なる私達がそのままいけば必ず自らを滅ぼすような危機に直面することが明らかに分かっているのなら、たとえそれがどんなに厳しい言葉でも躊躇せずに伝えるでしょう。そのままいけば落ちていくのが分かっていながら、それを指摘しないのなら、それはその人達を黙殺しているようなものです。イスラエルを愛された神はそれゆえにこのことを徹底してヨシュアに命じたのです。
皆さん、今日はモーセからヨシュアへとどのように世代が交代したかということをお話しました。また、ヨシュアが自分に与えられた使命を妥協せずに全うしていった様を見ました。私達はいかがでしょうか、私達が託されているタスキはどんな使命を私達に示しているでしょうか。そして、その使命に私達は生き、次の者達に手渡す日が来るということを意識して今も私達が走るべき行程を走っているでしょうか。そのたすきを手渡す時に私達はタスキを託す者達に伝えるのです「全ての力は神からくる。このことを忘れるな」と。
そして同時に「主の命じられることを軽んじるな」と伝えるのです。このことをヨシュアは心に刻みました。それが一国のリーダーであれ、会社の中のリーダーであて、家庭のリーダーであれ、私達がこの原則に従う時に私達自身も、そして私達と共におる者達も守られ、祝福され、本当の意味で安定するのです。悲しいかな、イスラエルの歴史はこれらのことがなされることなく妥協が繰り返され、さらに混迷を増していきます。そして、この世界の歴史を見る時に、今日の我々の国のあり様を見る時に、このことが全く顧みられないことによる国の姿を私達は目の当たりにしているのです。ヨシュアが心に刻んだことが私達の場合は除外されるということがありましょうか。いいえ、主がヨシュアに語られた言葉は今もそのまま私達一人一人に語られているのです。聞く耳のある者はさいわいです。その人はおのが命、またその人と共におる者を救うことでしょう。お祈りしましょう。

Last week, we learned that Moses had to climb Mt. Sinai all alone. And I pointed out that it is very important to make time to face the Lord alone. This was done by all of the characters in the Bible. This morning, we would like to study Joshua, the successor of Moses.
Moses left Egypt to lead the people of Israel to the land of Canaan. But, even Moses was mortal and the day came to say good-bye to this earth. Moses had to delegate everything to Joshua and return to God before he could step on the promised land of Canaan. God said to Moses: “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit of leadership, and lay your hand on him. Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the entire assembly and commission him in their presence. Give him some of your authority so the whole Israelite community will obey him.” (Numbers 27:18-20) Although Moses had some children, he did not choose nepotism and selected Joshua as his successor as God had instructed him. This statement seems innocuous. But, we have seen family quarrel erupting because of the questions of successors.
From this succession from Moses to Joshua, we learn that each of us is destined to live only one generation at a time. In other words, what we can and should do is to succeed what our predecessors had built up, to add what we can do to it, and to pass that work on to the next generation.
Up to that point of time, Joshua had learned a lot by observing Moses. Moses was also aware that the day would come and made sure to give Joshua chances to learn from Moses’ experience. One of such experiences was the battle with Amalekites, the archrival of Israel. The incidence is recorded in Exodus 17:9-16.
9 Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands.” 10 So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill. 11 As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. 12 When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset. 13 So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword. 14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write this on a scroll as something to be remembered and make sure that Joshua hears it, because I will completely blot out the name of Amalek from under heaven.” 15 Moses built an altar and called it The Lord is my Banner. 16 He said, “Because hands were lifted up against the throne of the Lord, the Lord will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation.”
Joshua fought with the Amalekites as was commanded by Moses. Joshua must have drawn up a detailed strategy and fought with well-trained fellow soldiers. And, he won the battle. Joshua thought that he would have won the battle without the help from Moses. But, when Joshua came back to the camp triumphantly, he learned that Moses had been praying to God holding his hands high during the battle. As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. Joshua realized that Joshua and his army did not win the battle. They won the battle because Moses prayed and God responded.
And, the Lord said to Moses, “Write this on a scroll as something to be remembered and make sure that Joshua hears it” (14) Joshua was to take over as the leader after Moses is gone. He would face hard times and may have many sleepless nights from fear and worry. The Lord wanted Joshua to read this record in time of hardship and remember that battles are won not by strategy or military strength, but by the power of God. This was the most important lesson that the leader of Israel should keep in his heart.
Psalm 20 was written by David, the second king of Israel. This prayer was offered by a priest for a king setting out for a battle field. It says: “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.” (7) David was a great king. But, even he knew that his power did not come from him or his possessions. He knew that his power came from God.
During our recent trip to Israel, we visited the Temple Mount and the Wailing Wall of Jerusalem. On the Temple Mount stands the Golden Mosque that you see in every picture postcard of Jerusalem. This was the place where Abraham had dedicated Isaac, and Jesus had visited this temple, too. Today, Islamic believers gather in the mosque and hold their worship services. Just below the mosque is that famous Wailing Wall, where many Jewish people offer their prayers pressing their heads against the wall. Jewish people are praying that their temple would be built again where the Islamic mosque is today. They continue to pray ardently.
But, we might wonder why they do not try to take over the site by force if they really want the temple re-built there. This is possible. But, if they should do so, Jerusalem and the country of Israel would become a target of surrounding enemy countries. But, these people do not wish to build the temple by their own power. They believe that God would listen to their prayer. That is why they continue to pray at the wall. This seems to reflect their faith that was recorded in the Bible.
Zechariah 4:6 says: “Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit.” We must realize that what we try to do is achieved not by our power, but by the power of God.
This book of Joshua has recorded many bloody battles. And God says there that the people must destroy the enemy totally. We wonder why such harsh words are contained in the Bible. We wonder if God is condoning wars. Let us see what the Bible is truly saying. Deuteronomy 7:1-6 records the words of God that he spoke to the people of Israel just before they entered the land of Canaan.
1 When the Lord your God brings you into the land you are entering to possess and drives out before you many nations—the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites, seven nations larger and stronger than you—2 and when the Lord your God has delivered them over to you and you have defeated them, then you must destroy them totally. Make no treaty with them, and show them no mercy. 3 Do not intermarry with them. Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons, 4 for they will turn your children away from following me to serve other gods, and the Lord’s anger will burn against you and will quickly destroy you. 5 This is what you are to do to them: Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones, cut down their Asherah poles and burn their idols in the fire. 6 For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession.
Joshua carried out these words after the death of Moses, destroying the nations in the land of Canaan. As we observe his action, we begin to notice something.
And that is, Joshua had one thought in his heart all the time – namely that they are always in the presence of their enemies. Ever since he was subordinate to Moses, Joshua carried that thought in his mind. And that was why he could carry out God’s order to conquer the land of Canaan. And to say that he was always mindful of his enemies was to say that he would never compromise. He had learned that the key to victory was in God. And when God commanded him to destroy, he understood what it meant.
The real meaning of the words of God would become clear after Joshua’s death. After Joshua was gone, the people stopped observing the basic principle that Joshua had tried to honor. We can see what happened when that principle was ignored. This is recorded in Judges 3:5-7:
5 The Israelites lived among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. 6 They took their daughters in marriage and gave their own daughters to their sons, and served their gods. 7 The Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord; they forgot the Lord their God and served the Baals and the Asherahs.
The land of Canaan that Joshua had obtained was a fertile land. It was ideal to settle down there for agriculture. With success in agriculture, the people obtained a stable life style. For these people who had suffered harsh life on the wilderness, this life was very welcome. They were now more interested in producing good harvests. And, in order to assure such good harvest, they started to worship multitude of gods that people had created. God had told Joshua to destroy everything. God was warning people not to worship these alien gods.
One thing we have learned from our visit to Israel is the danger of extreme belief. The ultra-conservative Jewish people do not engage in any work but devote their days studying the Law of Moses. They are exempt from paying taxes or from military duty. They neglect their duty or responsibility and just study the Law. These people are shunned by the general public in Israel. They are ostracized by the society. They do not observe traffic laws since there is no such law in the Law of Moses. There were no cars 3000 years ago when the law was written. The country of Israel is surrounded by Islamic countries on all sides. We were told that the general public is leaning toward understanding their neighboring countries better. But, the presence of group of people with radical belief could easily ignite a danger of war. We must be careful not to be too radical. But, I am not saying that we should accept everything regardless. God tells us that there is something that should not be compromised.
We have a tendency to go with the general flow. We do not want to push our own philosophy too hard. It is much easier for most of us to compromise and settle with others.
As I have pointed out the greatest danger that the people of Israel had faced was to compromise with the local gods in the land of Canaan. It was nice to find a stable life for a change there. But, they did not realize that they were in danger of losing the most important thing in life. With compromise, they started to worship idols and to ignore God-given laws. As a result, they started to lose the stability and prosperity.
When archeologists examined the idols in the land of Canaan, they found urns with remains of children that were sacrificed for the gods of fertility such as Baals and Asherahs. They also found sculptures of sexual organs that they had worshipped. They found indications of booming temple prostitution business. In agricultural lands, we often find that fertility was revered and human sexual fertility was turned into an object of worship. This usually led to sexual decadence. Many of historians point out today that once powerful nations had reached their fall because of unimaginable sexual decadence. This was a harbinger of national demise. The archeologists excavating the towns in the land of Canaan understood, from their findings, why God had told the people to destroy the cities totally.
Throughout the history of Israel, Baals and Asherahs had brought downfall of the people. The book of Judges, that follows the book of Joshua, records the darkest history stretching over 400 years, of suffering and devastation, that was brought about by worshiping these alien gods.
Brothers and sisters in Christ, what God wanted of the people of Israel was for them not to be the people of God for the moment, but to continue to be the people of God. And that required rejecting alien gods from their life. God did not simply say to be wary of alien gods. God knows our nature. God knows how dangerous it is to allow alien thoughts to come into our hearts. We should have only one God in our hearts. We know from our own experience that a crisis springs from our careless and compromising thoughts. At the beginning, we do not realize what is actually happening from such innocent-looking compromises. But, such careless attitude to settle for easy solutions will lead us into a very serious danger. Many people had to regret such attitudes later. We can see through the Bible, what happened to the people of Israel when they did not listen to God’s warning. Their compromising attitude lead them to their destruction. God was right to warn Joshua about such danger. We must learn from the mistake of the people of Israel. We must take that lesson to our hearts. God does not wish for us to repeat the same mistake.
Deuteronomy 7:6 says: “For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession.” If someone considers us as precious as treasures, and if he knows our road is leading us to destructive danger, he would not hesitate to give us stern warning however harsh that might be. If we know someone is headed for downfall and if we do not point that out, we are committing a murder by inaction. God loved Israel. And that was why God gave Joshua a very clear order.
This morning, we studied how Moses had passed his baton to Joshua. We also learned how Joshua had carried out God’s order without compromise. But, how about us? We are handed a baton. What are we to do with the baton? Are we running our course knowing that that this baton has to be handed over to the next generation? When we do hand over the baton, we must tell the next runner not to forget that all power comes from God.
And, at the same time, we must tell the next runner not to take our responsibility half-heartedly. Joshua understood the seriousness of God’s command. This holds true to everyone: A leader of a nation, leader of a society, or of a family. Our life will gain stability in the true sense when we follow the basic responsibility given to us by God. It is sad to see that the history of Israel is full of half-hearted compromises and subsequent chaos. When we look at the history of nations of this world, and of our own country, we also realize that we are making the same mistakes. Are we exempt from the command given to Joshua by God? No. The same command is given to each of us here. God cares about us very much. Blessed are those with ears to hear. They would save not only their life but also the life of people around them.

４）イスラエルの民がそれまでの荒野の流浪生活からカナンの地での定住に変わることにより、彼らは生活の安定と豊かさを得ました。しかし、それと同時に彼らにはどんなことが起こりましたか。士師記３章５節－７節を読みましょう。
５）４）からなぜ神様はヨシュアに厳しい言葉を語ったのか、その理由が分かります。申命記６章６節には「あなたはあなたの神、主の聖なる民である。あなたの神、主は地のおもてのすべての民のうちからあなたを選んで、自分の宝の民とされた」と書かれています。「宝のような存在」のために神様は厳しいことを言われるお方であることを心に留めましょう。
６）大きな災いの多くは小さな妥協から始まります。あなたはそんな実例を知っていますか。
