牧師として言うのは何ですが、人は人である限り、そこに完全な期待を寄せることはできません。しかし、イエス・キリストは別なのです。いかがですか、あなたはこれから何により頼んで、何を見上げて生きていきますか。もう、人間はこりごりという方がいるかもしれません。もう、誰も信用できないという方、いるかもしれません。おっしゃることはごもっともです。人はそのような者であり、これからも私達を悩ます人間が私達の前に立ちはだかるでしょう。否、私達自身がそんな人間なのかもしれません。しかし、イエス・キリストは違います・・・。

「この人を見よ！」

創世記８章１節―２２節
私達は神様が最初の人、アダムを創造し、その後、エバを創造され、二人は人類最初の夫婦になったということをみてまいりました。しかし、その彼らは禁じられていた実を食べ、園を追われて出ていきました。彼らの長男カインは弟のアベルを殺害し、カインもまた地の放浪者としてさまよい出ていきます。以後人間は増え広がり、その人の様について創世記６章は「時に世は神の前に乱れて、暴虐が地に満ちた」（創世記６章１１節）と記し、その様をつぶさに見ておられた神様はある決断をします。
5主は人の悪が地にはびこり、すべてその心に思いはかることが、いつも悪い事ばかりであるのを見られた。6主は地の上に人を造ったのを悔いて、心を痛め、7「わたしが創造した人を地のおもてからぬぐい去ろう。人も獣も、這うものも、空の鳥までも。わたしは、これらを造ったことを悔いる」と言われた。8しかし、ノアは主の前に恵みを得た。9ノアの系図は次のとおりである。ノアはその時代の人々の中で正しく、かつ全き人であった。ノアは神とともに歩んだ（創世記６章５節―９節）
そうです、そこで神はこの地を一度、大洪水によりリセットします。しかし、その洪水により全ての人間が失われることがないように、神と共に歩んだノアに恵みを与え、大洪水から免れるようにと彼に箱舟を作るようにと示されます。ノアは家族と共に箱舟を造り、彼らはその洪水を免れ、洪水がひいた後に大地に定住し始めます。しかし、そこで収穫し、生産したブドウ酒に彼はしたたか酔い、醜態をあらわし、そのことにより彼の息子とその子孫が祝福を失ってしまったということを先週はお話ししました。
神が最初に天地を創造された時、この地球環境には秩序がありました。秩序とはこの世界に存在しているものが偶然の産物であり、互いにてんでばらばらであるということではなく、全ての被造物の背後にある知性がこの世界にあるものに関連性を与え、それぞれの存在には意味があり、それらが互いに補い合うように成り立っているということです。宇宙の天体について、また地球の自然をとりあげたドキュメンタリー番組が映し出す、その神秘的な美しさに私達は驚嘆しますが、それは私達がその背後にある神が定められた秩序に驚いていると言っても過言ではないでしょう。その秩序がありますゆえに、この宇宙も地球環境も保たれてきたのです。しかし、現在この地球環境の秩序が混乱し（宇宙にまで人間が生み出したごみがただよっているといいます）、これまでなかったような色々な自然災害が起きています。そして、その要因には人間が大きく関わっています。大気汚染、海洋汚染、森林伐採にしても人間がこの秩序を乱し、それを破壊へと推し進めている張本人なのです。
これら私達を取り囲む宇宙や自然環境のみならず、同じように私達、人間の互いの関係にも本来、秩序がありました。そう、アダムとエバが禁じられた実を食べる前まではその秩序があったのですが、彼らがその実を食べた時からこの秩序も失われました。この「秩序」とは「人間が歩むべき道」と言ってもいいでしょう。聖書はこの人の歩むべき道を示している書物です。しかし、私達は今日、その言葉に目もくれずに、私達を取り巻く自然環境と同じように、私達の互いの関係にも混乱をもたらしています。
ですから創世記に記されているように『時に世は神の前に乱れて、暴虐が地に満ちた」（創世記６章１１節）という世界、また『人の悪が地にはびこり、すべてその心に思いはかることが、いつも悪い事ばかりである』というのは、人間が互いにあるべき秩序を乱し、それがまさしく極限に達していたということを意味するのでありましょう。
この国にとりましてとても大切な選挙が今週もたれます。その日にいたるまでの日々、国民はこの国のあり方とか、この国の未来について健徳的で活発な議論をする機会が与えられていました。それぞれの候補者がもつ国に対するビジョン、その政策というものが論じられ、私達はこの国について考え、決断し、それぞれの票を投じるべきです。しかし、この度の選挙に関していえば、それら以外の事ばかりが注目されていたように見受けられます。
太古の時代には腕力がある人間がその腕っぷしにより人の間に君臨し、その集団なり地域をまとめあげていたと思われます。その後、その力は財力や、軍力とかたちを変え、長い時を経て、近年になり私達の国は民主主義というものに行きつきました。国民がそれぞれ一票の投票権をもち、自分達のリーダーを決めるのです。この選挙のために人は知恵を出しあって、そのために必要な法律を作り、色々な経験を積みながら、そのかたちを作り上げてきました。しかし、私達はその民主主義の本懐である選挙において、この度、その理想とはほど遠い様をあらわにしてしまったように私には見受けられました。多くの人はこの度の二人の候補者について色々なことを言いますが、その二人をここまで選んできたのは私達国民なのです。このことは民主主義が始まった当初の、まだ手探りの時代の話ではなくて、その研究がなされ、それなりの歴史を経、その道の第一線にいると自負しているこのアメリカで今、起きていることなのです。人とはいったい何者なのでしょうか。
今日、目を世界に向ければ、いいえ、私達のすぐ身近なところで誰かが自分の財産や命を脅かされています。そのことにより指名手配され、逃亡している人の顔写真を私達は目にすることがあります。この国においても、他国においても獄に人が溢れ、もはやそのスペースがないというようなことを聞きます。そう、彼らは自らがしてしまったことにより、逮捕され、裁判にかけられ、そして服役しているのです。
彼らの言動は法律の文言にひっかかったのです。しかしながらそんな人達に対して、誰かに言った言葉や示した態度により、人の心を引き裂いておきながら、獄に囚われることなく暮らしている者も無数にいます。そう、その人達は法の文言にひっかかることはありません。しかし、実際のところ鉄格子の向こうにいる人と、これらの人たちの違いは一体、何なのでしょうか。私達は人間というもの、そう、人である自分自身というものについて見つめ、そこから考えていかないとなりません。
私は映画をよく見ます。牧師という仕事がらでしょうか、SFとかファンタジーというような非現実的な映画よりも、私達の身近にある人間模様がふんだんに織り込まれた映画を好みます。もちろん、映画にも良しあしがありますので、見ようと思わない映画のほうが圧倒的に多いのです。そんな観ようとは思わない映画の一つに数年前に上映された「Purge」という映画があります。なぜこの映画を観ようと思わないかと言いますと、その話の内容はある程度、想像できるからです。そう、その中には目をそむけるようなバイオレンスがたくさんあるということが最初から分かっているからです。
なぜ、まだ観ていないのに、その映画にはたくさんのバイオレンスがあると分かるのでしょうか。その映画は経済が崩壊した後のアメリカを舞台としています。そして、そのアメリカが一年に一度、全ての犯罪が合法される夜を設けたのです。夜の七時から翌朝の七時までの間、全ての警察、消防、医療が停止されるのです。そうです、その１２時間、この国から法律がなくなるというストーリーなのです。そのような１２時間に置かれた世界というものを想像する時にこの映画がどんな場面で埋め尽くされていくかということを想像するのはたやすいことです。
もし、今、このアメリカでそのような法律が一晩、施行されたらどうなるのだろうかと思いますと背筋が凍りませんか。法治国家に住んでいて、その国の治安体制が整い、賄賂や買収が少なくともオープンではできない国に住んでいるということは大きな恵みです（世界全体を見ますと、このような国の方が少ないのかもしれません）。法がなく、治安を取りしまる体制がないとどうなるかというと、まさしくこのようなノアの時代の人になりかねないというのが私達、人間なのです。その罪の性質を持ち合わせながら、かろうじて法律により抑制されている国に住んでいるゆえに、ある程度の治安が保たれているというのが私達の現状なのです。
これは特別選んだわけでもない、最近、一週間に起きたサンディエゴの犯罪地図です。ここには誰かの車の窓を割ったり、道すがらの人が強盗にあったり、家に泥棒が入ったり、多くはありませんが時々、殺人というようなことが起きたことが記されています。この地図は法治国家アメリカで私達の一週間の間に今、起きていることです。それではもし、この国からその法がなくなったらどうなるでしょうか。おそらく私達はこの地図のストリートが見えないほどに埋め尽くされた諸々の犯罪を目の当たりにすることでしょう。
まさしく、このルールなき世界のことを大洪水の前の世界は言い表しているのです。そう、この状況を思います時に、創世記に記されているように『時に世は神の前に乱れて、暴虐が地に満ちた」（創世記６章１１節）という世界、また『人の悪が地にはびこり、すべてその心に思いはかることが、いつも悪い事ばかりである』という世界を私達は理解できるのです。
そして、神様はその世界を一掃し、新しい出発をするわけですが、時がそれほど経たないうちに今度は「バベルの塔」という問題が起きます。その経緯はこのようなものです。
1全地は同じ発音、同じ言葉であった。2時に人々は東に移り、シナルの地に平野を得て、そこに住んだ。3彼らは互に言った、「さあ、れんがを造って、よく焼こう」。こうして彼らは石の代りに、れんがを得、しっくいの代りに、アスファルトを得た。4彼らはまた言った、「さあ、町と塔とを建てて、その頂を天に届かせよう。そしてわれわれは名を上げて、全地のおもてに散るのを免れよう」。5時に主は下って、人の子たちの建てる町と塔とを見て、6言われた、「民は一つで、みな同じ言葉である。彼らはすでにこの事をしはじめた。彼らがしようとする事は、もはや何事もとどめ得ないであろう。7さあ、われわれは下って行って、そこで彼らの言葉を乱し、互に言葉が通じないようにしよう」。8こうして主が彼らをそこから全地のおもてに散らされたので、彼らは町を建てるのをやめた。9これによってその町の名はバベルと呼ばれた。主がそこで全地の言葉を乱されたからである。主はそこから彼らを全地のおもてに散らされた（創世記１１章１節‐９節）。
今、私達の周りには色々な言語がありますが、その昔、全地は同じ発音、同じ言葉でした。全地が同じ発音、同じ言葉であった時、人々は何をし始めたのでしょうか。彼らはれんがを焼き、町と塔を建てて、その頂を天にまで届かせ、我々の名前をあげようではないかと動き出したのです。この様を見た神様は言われたのです「民は一つで、みな同じ言葉である。彼らはすでにこの事をしはじめた』（６）。
ノアの洪水により人類は新しく始まりました。ノアは神の前に正しく生きようとした人です。彼は完璧な人間ではありませんでしたが、神の前に生きようとした彼とその家族から人類は再出発したのですから希望もあります。しかし、先週、お話ししましたようにそのノアの息子達の心には既に深い闇があり、そこからまた増え広がった人間達がこのバベルの塔の建築にたずさわったのです。
そんな人間を見て、神様は言われたのです『彼らは既にこのことをし始めた』。この言葉はとても意味深です。この言葉は神様が遅かれ早かれ、人はこのことを始めるだろうという思いがあったことを示しているからです。そう、人の性（さが）は遅かれ早かれ、自分が神のようになるというあの当初のアダムとエバの思いにとらわれ、実際にそのことを具体的にし始めるということを神様は知っていました。そして、そのことが早くも始まったということを神様はここで言われているのです。
ここに記されていますように人はこの後、言葉が乱されて、世界各地に散らされました。以降、同じ言語をもつ者達があちこちに集まり共に暮らし始めたのでしょう。そこに集落が誕生し、民族が形成され、それがやがて国となっていったのでしょう。何を隠そう、私達の祖先もその中の誰かに行きつくのです。
神様はノアの洪水の後に『わたしはこの度、したように、もう二度と、すべての生きたものを滅ぼさない』（創世記８章２１節）と言われたようにこの度は彼らを滅ぼすことはありませんでした。しかし、彼らの言葉を互いに通じなくさせたのです。それは彼らの語る言葉が互いに異なる言語となり、ゆえに互いに何かを共にすることができる状態ではなくなったということでありましょう。そして、同時にこの出来事には、たとえ互いに同じ言葉を語っていたとしても、もはや彼らは互いに理解しあえる、協力し合える、心通じ合うようなことがさらに困難になったというようなことも含まれていたことでしょう。
確かに言葉が異なる者同士のコミュニケーションは大変です。でも、それは何も異なる言語の者達の間の問題だけではなく、たとえ同じ言葉を話す者同士でも言葉が通わないのです。私が言っておりますこと、皆さんよくお判りでしょう。同じ日本語を話しているということはイコール、心と心が通じ合うということではないのです
今、創世記の主な出来事を駆け足で見ておりますが、さぁ、それではこのような人間がここから先に進むために、次に不可欠となるものは何でしょうか。そうです、先ほどから触れています、この無法の人間にはルールが必要となるということです。人は何でもかんでも自分の好き勝手に、本能のおもくままに生きてはいけないということを互いに強いるために律法が必要とされました。ゆえに神様は創世記が終わり、出エジプト記の時代となり、モーセを通して人に十戒をはじめとする律法を与えます。もし人がその律法の中にとどまるのなら、少なくとも人間の秩序は保たれるのです。このために私達人間を代表するかのように、この律法に従い生きるために神様が選ばれたのがイスラエルの民、すなわちユダヤ人でありました。しかし「もし人がその律法の中にとどまるのなら」というのが曲者で、結論から言いますと彼らはその律法の中にとどまることなどできず、ことごとくその律法を破り、生きてきた、それが旧約聖書の歴史なのです。このようなことを繰り返し、まさしく詮方尽きてしまったというユダヤ人の姿のまま旧約聖書は閉じられていくのです。このユダヤ人の挫折と敗北は何も彼らに限ったことではなく、それが仮に別の民族でありましても、その律法を守り通すことはできないのです。そう、それはユダヤ人の問題ではなく、人間の問題だからです。
そして、その時から完全に行き詰ってしまった４００年の時が経ち、今から２０００年前に一人の人がエルサレムにおいて総督ピラトの前に立っていました。ピラトはローマから送られてきてエルサレムの治安維持に取り組んでいた総督で、彼は全く世俗的な人間であり、聖書の神というものには何ら心を寄せていないローマの役人です。その時のことについてヨハネはこう記録しています。
『1そこでピラトは、イエスを捕え、むちで打たせた。2兵卒たちは、いばらで冠をあんで、イエスの頭にかぶらせ、紫の上着を着せ、3それから、その前に進み出て、「ユダヤ人の王、ばんざい」と言った。そして平手でイエスを打ちつづけた。4するとピラトは、また出て行ってユダヤ人たちに言った、「見よ、わたしはこの人をあなたがたの前に引き出すが、それはこの人になんの罪も見いだせないことを、あなたがたに知ってもらうためである」。5イエスはいばらの冠をかぶり、紫の上着を着たままで外へ出られると、ピラトは彼らに言った、「見よ、この人だ」。6祭司長たちや下役どもはイエスを見ると、叫んで「十字架につけよ、十字架につけよ」と言った。ピラトは彼らに言った、「あなたがたが、この人を引き取って十字架につけるがよい。わたしは、彼にはなんの罪も見いだせない」。7ユダヤ人たちは彼に答えた、「わたしたちには律法があります。その律法によれば、彼は自分を神の子としたのだから、死罪に当る者です」（ヨハネ１９章１節―７節）。
そう、ピラトの前に立っていたのはイエス・キリストでした。その時、イエス様はユダヤ人に訴えられ、彼らはイエス様を十字架の死罪にしようとしていたのです。この箇所を読みますと、イエス様はムチで打たれていたということが分かります。この時代、十字架刑の前になされたムチ打ちのムチには鉛や動物の骨がつけられており、それが背中に当たるたびに、背中の皮は引き裂かれ、時にはその骨までも露出するほどの衝撃だったと言われます。そして、その頭には茨で作られた冠がかぶせられ、紫の上着を着せられました。言うまでもなく冠は王を意味するもので、紫も王が身にまとう色で、これらには明らかにイエスへの侮辱がこめられていました。兵卒たちは血まみれになったイエスを「ユダヤ人の王、万歳」と馬鹿にし、平手でその頬を打ち続けたとここには書かれています。
ピラトはこのイエスを、茨の冠、紫の上着をつけたままユダヤ人の前に連れ出して、とんでもないことを群集に向かい言ったのです。そう、「この人を見よ！」と。
私達は今日、ここまでノアの時代、バベルの時代の人間をみてまいりました。その姿は決して誇れるような人間の姿ではありませんでした。先ほど触れましたように神様がノアの箱舟の後、二度とこの地を滅ぼさないと言われたその直前、神様はこんな言葉も言われていました『人が心に思い図ることは、幼い時から悪いからである』（創世記８章２１節）。そう、この言葉が事実であるのなら、私達は人として神の前に出れるような者ではないのです。
しかし、折しもイエス・キリストのことを何も知らない異教徒のピラトはイエス・キリストをユダヤの群衆の前に差し出していったのです、「この人を見よ」と。そう、その人は鞭打たれ、ぼろぼろとなったイエス・キリストでした。ピラトはそれ以前のイエス様との会話により、イエスには何の罪もないと思っていました。ただ異国人である彼には理解できないユダヤ人の間の何かしらの宗教的な理由によって、民衆はイエスに対して怒っているのだと思っていました。そんなピラトの第一の関心はユダヤ人の宗教的信条ではなく、彼が仕えているカイザルの逆鱗に触れることのないように無難に自分の仕事をすることで、このイエスをユダヤ民衆の前に立たせることにより、「この哀れな人を見よ。こんな人を あなたたちは王と思っているのか」と彼らの情に訴え、できることならこの事を大きな騒ぎにはしたくないという心がそこにはありました。この言葉はそんな彼の保身が込められたものだったのです。
しかし、これまでお話ししてきました聖書の中の人間の姿というものを目の当たりにしてきて暗澹たる思いでいる私達にとりまして、「この人を見よ！」と言われ、私達がその顔を上げてこのお方を見る時に、私達はそこにこれまでお話ししてきた人間とはまったく一線を画すお方をそこに見出すのです。
私達は最初に私達の世界の秩序が混乱しているということをお話ししました。私達の互いの関係が混乱しているとお話ししました。しかしこのイエス・キリストの言動を聖書の中に見ていくのなら、私達はイエス・キリストには神の秩序、すなわち私達と神との関係、また私達の互いの関係をもう一度、修復する力があるということに気がつかされるのです。イエス様自ら「わたしは道である」と言われたように、このキリストのうちに我々が歩むべき道があるということに私達は気がつかされるのです。
このイエス様の言動を教会ではいつも、そしてこれからもお話ししてまいりますので、そのことについての詳細は今日は話しません。しかし、まさしく私達人間はこのお方のうちに私達の生きる道と希望を見つけることが出来るのです。明らかにこの人の生きざまはノアの洪水の時代の人やバベルの人たちとは異なるのです。
時々、私達は「人を見ないで、イエス様を見上げましょうよ」という言葉を聞きます。それは何かクリスチャンの言い訳となるような言葉としても聞こえます。しかし、実際のところ、この言葉は正しいことを言っているのです。人間とはすなわち私達が今日、見てきた者達のことであり、イエス・キリストとはそんな人間とはまったく異なる、父なる神との関係を完全に保っている唯一のお方なのですから。
牧師として言うのは何ですが、人は人である限り、そこに完全な期待を寄せることはできません。しかし、このイエス・キリストは別なのです。いかがですか、あなたはこれから何により頼んで、何を見上げて生きていきますか。もう、人間はこりごりという方がいるかもしれません。もう、誰も信用できないという方、いるかもしれません。おっしゃることはごもっともです。人はそのような者であり、これからも私達を悩ます人間が私達の前に立ちはだかるでしょう。否、私達自身がそんな人間なのかもしれません。しかし、イエス・。キリストは違います。このお方のことをもっともっと知ろうではありませんか。そこから溢れんばかりの神の恵みと愛と知恵と力が溢れ出てきます。私達の心が疲れてしまう時、折れかけてしまうようなて時、私達は自らに向かってこう語りかけ、顔をあげようではありませんか。「この人を見よ！」と。お祈りしましょう。

Genesis 8:1-22
We have learned that God created the first man, Adam, and then Eve. These two formed the first couple. However, they ate the forbidden fruits and were expelled from the garden. Their first son Cain kills his brother Abel and was forced to live a life of a fugitive. Human being multiplied across the earth. However, Genesis 6:11 says “Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence.”Observing this, God came to one decision.
5 The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. 6 The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled.7 So the Lord said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.” 8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord. 9 This is the account of Noah and his family. Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God. (Genesis 6:5-9)
Yes, God decided to push the reset button with the great flood. God blesses Noah and his family, sparing them from the annihilation by instructing them to build an ark. Noah and his family built the ark and escaped the devastation of the flood and started a new life. But, Noah got drunk from the wine they have harvested and behaved inappropriately. Thus, his son and descendants lost the blessing of th Lord.
When heaven and earth was created, there was an order in the natural environment. By order, I mean that our world did not come into existance by chance, and everything in our nature have special relationship to each other, and that all of this was created with intelligent purpose and meaning. When we watch documentary videos of the universe, space, and nature surrounding us, we are amazed and impressed with the beauty and mystery. But, what we are truly amazed is the order behind all this that God had planned and created. This order maintains our universe and the natural environment. But, lately we hear that the orderly nature is being threatened. Outer space is filled with man-made debris. We see natural disasters happening more frequently. Air and our oceans are polluted. We are losing so much forest at an alarming rate. And the major cause of these problems is us, human.
We used to have order not only in the outer space and natural environtments but also in the relationship between people. Until Adam and Eve picked the forbidden fruits, there was an order. But, that order was lost ever since. We can say that by “order” we mean the way a man should be. The Bible is a book that shows us how a man should be. But we have neglected the words of the Bible for too long. This neglect has caused chaos in our human relationships.
The book of Genesis says: ”Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence.” (Genesis 6:11) and ”The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time.” This says that men have destroyed the order that existed in human relationship.
Next week, we have an important election in this country. The days leading up to the election were supposed to be an important chance for us to contemporate and discuss the status and the future of our nation. This was supposed to be a chance to study visions and policies presented to us by candidates so that we can cast our votes intelligently. Unfortunately, this election season has been overtaken by too many topics that distracted us from the important issues.
In an early human history, leaders used to be the ones with phycial power and they used that power to rule over people. Later, that power took on forms of financial power and military power. Today, our country is ruled by a democracy. Every citizen is given one vote and the leader is elected by votes. We have undergone many attempts to improve the election system and the laws for that. But, sadly, the current election seems to have lost that original spirit and have gone astray. Many of us criticize the two candidates. But we have voted them into candidacy. We must take some blame. It is sad that what we are observing is not an event that took place at the infantcy of our democratic system but is the result of our proud and long histry. What has happened to us? Where do we stand?
When we look around, we see situations where our wealth and life are not safe. Many people are on wanted list and we see their faces on TV and posters. Our jail system is overcrowded and filled to its limit. These people in the jail have been arrested and judged and are serving their sentences.
Their behaviors have violated the letters of the law. But, there are many other people who had violated the human decency and done damage to hearts of the people, and yet are not caught and sentenced. These people did not violate the letters of the law. But what is the difference between those people behind the iron bars and people outside? We must take a careful look at ourselves and consider what we are and what we are doing to others around us.
I love watching movies. Perhaps because I am a mister, I prefer movies on human dramas rather than science fiction or fantasy movies. There are wide variety of movies. And there are some I would not want to watch. One of such movies is a movie called “Purge”that was released a few years ago. The reason why I do not want to see this movie is that I can imagine the terrible scenes from that movie. I think the movie contains scenes of extreme violence which I do not want to see.
But, you might ask, why do I think that way when I have not seen the movie yet. This movie is about America after the collapse of its economy. And this America passes a law that allows all crimes one night of each year. On that night, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. the following day, all police stations, fire stations, and hospitals ceases to operate. For a period of 12 hours, the law is abandoned in this country. It is easy to imagine what would take place during that 12-hour period when all crimes are legalized and law-less society is unleashed.
It is truly frightening to just imagine such a night when all crimes are considered legal. It is a great blessing that we live in a law-abiding nation with a legal system, where bribes are not openly accepted. (Although bribes are still very common in many countries.) When there is no law and no law-enforcement system, we can go right back to the days of Noah. That is our human nature. We are easily tempted to break the law. That is our human nature unfortunately. But, our legal system is holding us together.
This map I am showing shows the crimes committeds around San Diego in recent one week. It shows that some vandalized cars, some worked robbery, and some broke into house, and even some murders took place. This map shows what happens around us, in a law-abiding nation of USA. Imagine what happens to this map when we have no laws and crimes are legalized. I am sure this map would be overwhelmed with all types of crimes.
Such law-less world was seen in the world just before the great flood. You can easily imagine that ”the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence.” (Genesis 6:11) and ”the wickedness of the human race had filled the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time.” God cleans up the world and the world had a fresh start. But, before long, the earth encounters a problem of “Tower of Babel”
It is described this way:
Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. 2 As people moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there. 3 They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. 4 Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.” 5 But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. 6 The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.” 8 So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. 9 That is why it was called Babel—because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth. (Genesis 11:1-9)
The world is filled with many languages today. But, long time ago, there was only one common language. So, what did these people with one same language try to do? They decided to bake bricks, build the town and the tower reaching up to the heaven. They wanted to make name. God said that these people speaking one language have already begun doing these things.
The human race was given a fresh start after the great flood of Noah. Noah lived right. He tried to live a faithful life in front of God. He was not perfect. But he and his family represented a hope for all mankind. But, as I discussed last week, the sons of Noah had a dark side. And their descendents tried to build this Tower of Babel.
God said these people had already begun doing things. This is a very meaningful observation. God seems to have known that sooner or later these people would start doing these things. God had known that it was in the human nature that they wanted to be like God just like Adam, and would someday start behaving like that. God said the things have already started.
As is written here, the languages were scrambled and people were scattered to corners of the world. People speaking the same language formed a community and lived together. These communities grew eventually to various countries of the world. Our ancesters are one of them.
God told Noah: ”Never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done.” (Genesis 8:21) God kept this promise. Although God did not destroy people, the languages were no longer common. Because of that, it became difficult to work together. At the same time, it became more difficult for people, even speaking the same language, to communicate, understand, and work together. This has been our human history.
It is very difficult for people speaking different language to understand each other. But, that difficulty is not limited to different languages. Even people speaking the same language have hard time communicating. I think you agree with this observation. Just because two people speak the same Japanese language, it does not guarantee that their communication is easy.
We have been reviewing our human history this morning. What then do we need to go forward from here? What lawless society needs is a law and rules. The time of Noah’s flood and the tower of Babel were without any rules.
Human nature is to do whatever instinct dictates. That is why we need a law that guide us to more orderly society. For this reason, after the Genesis and when the time of the Exodus came, God gave us the Ten Commandments through Moses. Our human order could have been maintained if people had stayed within the law. God had selected the people of Israel, the Jewish people, to represent all of the human race as ones to follow the law. The key question was “if people had stayed within the law.” However, these selected people could not stay within the law and violated the law. That was the history recorded in the Old Testament. The Old Testament described the Jewish people having failed to obey the law miserably. But this failure of the Jewish people was not unique to the Jewish people. There is no other nation on this earth that can meet the requirement of the law.This has always been the human problem.
And 400 years after that, about 2000 years ago, one man stood in front of Pilate, the Roman governor. This Pilate had been sent from Rome to rule over Jerusalem. He was not religious and did not have any interest in the God of the Bible. John has recorded the scene this way:
Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. 2 The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe 3 and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!” And they slapped him in the face. 4 Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, “Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.” 5 When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!” 6 As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!” But Pilate answered, “You take him and crucify him. As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.” 7 The Jewish leaders insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God.” (John 19:1-7)
Yes, it was Jesus Christ who stood in front of Pilate. Jewish people had Jesus arrested and tried to charge him with death penalty. This scripture tells us that Jesus was flogged. This flogging used whips embedded with leads and aniumal bones to cause maximum damage to the victim. This flogging caused the skins to be torn and even exposed bones. And a crown of thorn was placed on Jesus’s head, and he was dressed in a purple robe. Both the crown and the purple robe symbolized the power of king. This was the way to mock Jesus and to show disrespect to him. Soldiers called out, mocking Jesus, “Hail, the king of the Jews” and slapped him in the face again and again.
Pilate took this Jesus with crown of thorn and purple robe before the Jewish peole and Pilate shouted out to the crowd: “Behold the man.”
We have looked at people from the time of Noah and Babel. They were not ideal people. Immediately before God promised to the people never to destroy the earth again with flood, he said: ”Every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood.” (Genesis 8:21) If this is true, we are not fit to go before God. We cannot find a model human that we can parade as the ideal person proclaiming “Behold. Here is the man.”
The pagan Pilate, who knew nothing about Jesus Christ, dragged Jesus Christ in front of the Jewish crowd and said “Here is the man. Look at him.” The man standing there was Jesus Christ, flogged, bloodied, and in rags. Pilate had understood from his conversation with Jesus that there was no reason to justify Jesus to be sentenced to death. But, this pagan Pilate, an outsider, thought that there had been some religious conflicts which made the people very mad against Jesus. The first and top concern for Pilate was not the feeling of the Jewish people. Rather, he was more concerned about the feeling of Ceasar. Pilate wanted to protect his position. Perhaps by bringing Jesus Christ in front of Jewish people and by showing how miserable this Jesus looked, Pilate had hoped to win some sympathy for Jesus, and calm down the raging anger of the people. So, Pilate was trying to calm down the crowd so that he could regain some control.
But, we have seen how miserable and ugly we human have been throughout the history written in the Bible. When someone calls out to “Look at his man.”, and when we look up, we see someone who is completely different from such ugly human.
We have talked how chaotic the order of our world has become. We have also learned that our human relationship is in the tank. But, when we read and learn the words and works of Jesus Christ in the Bible, we realize that Jesus Christ is the one who can restore the oder in the world and restore the relationship between us and God as well as among fellow human beings. Jesus said “I am the way.” We realize that in this Jesus Christ we find the way we should walk.
I am not going to talk about the details of words and works of Jesus this morning. We have been discussing this all the time at our church. We must just know this morning that we human can find the way and the hope of our life in this Jesus Christ. His life was clearly different from people we have seen in the time of Noah’s flood and the Tower of Babel.
We hear words like: “Do not look at each other. Rather, look up to Jesus.” This sometimes sounds like an excuse for Chrstians. But, it is actually correct to say this. We should not be looking at human beings we saw in the Bible. We should be looking at Jesus Christ who is totally different from us and who is the only one who maintains the close relationship with God.
As long as we are human, we cannot hang our hope in people who are bound to be imperfect. But, Jesus is a different story. So, what are you going to rely upon? What are you going to look up to? You might say you had a terrible experience with people and you can not trust any human any more. This is understandable. After all, such is the nature of human. People would continue to bring trouble in our life. Perhaps we are the source of such trouble. But, Jesus Christ is different. Let us determine this morning that we will try to know more about Jesus Christ.
Paul must have understood our such sentiment when he wrote:
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. (Hebrews 12:1-2)
When we look up to Jesus Christ, we see in him the overflowing God’s blessing, love and wisdom. When we heart is weary, and broken, let us remember to look up, saying “Here is the man”.
