私達は外なるものに目を注ぎます。腕力、軍力、財力、知力、これらのものは今日、私達を引きつけます。しかし、これらのものが私達に有益になるか否か、それは一つのことにかかっています。すなわち、それはその力を用いる司令塔である私達の心なのです。聖書はその私達の心を上から下から照らし続けるものです。
主にある兄弟姉妹、このことは年に一度のチェックアップによって管理できるようなものではありません。週毎の礼拝、集会、そして日々の主との交わりにより、聖霊に満たされて生きる時に私達は神様から委ねられているものを本当の意味で、正しく使うことができるのです。

サムソン：まずは司令塔の点検を！

私達はこれまで創世記からアダム、イブ、アブラハム、ロト、ノア、出エジプト記と民数記からモーセ、アロン、バラムの弱さと失敗について見てまいりました。神様が初めに造られた人間、アダムとイブ以来、人はその数を増やし、その中からイスラエル民族があらわれました。神は彼らと共に歩み、彼らを通して人の歴史に介入されました。そのイスラエル民族に対して神はかねてからカナンという乳と蜜の流れる地に導かれるという約束を彼らとなさり、モーセはその地を目指しました。しかし、彼自身、その地に入ることができず、彼の跡を継いだヨシュアがカナンの地を征服しました。
ヨシュアはイスラエルの民を治め、カナン入国とその地の領土確保をしつつ、「この土地の諸々の神々と決して妥協をするな！」と民に語ってきました。そのような意味で彼は常に危機感をもって、民に注意をうながし、彼らを励ましてきたリーダーでした。彼が厳しい言葉を語り続けたということには、そうしなければイスラエルの民は滅びてしまうという危機感をヨシュアはカナンの地で見聞きしていたからです。
カナンに住むことにより、彼らはそれまでの荒野を転々と移動する生活から、一つ所に定住する農耕生活へと変わっていき、農耕をするからには、豊作が求められ、彼らはカナンにいた先住民の農耕方法を取り入れていきました。しかし、それはイコール、その先住民の農耕の中心にあった諸々のまじないや人の手で作られた神々を生活の中に受け入れることであり、やがて彼らは偶像崇拝へと陥っていきました。
豊穣の神々というのは常に多産と結びついており、それは性的な堕落への入り口となります。この世界には幾つかの文明が起きましたが、それらが崩壊する前の兆候として歴史学者が口々に指摘していることは常態化したこの性的な放縦と堕落がいたるところで起きていたということでした。先々週、お話ししましたようにイスラエルは武器を備えた敵には対抗できましたが、モアブの女の誘惑に打ち勝つことはできなかったのです。
そして時代は変わり、今日見ていきますところはそのヨシュアも世を去った後のことで、その時代について士師記は「そのころ、イスラエルには王がなく、それぞれ自分の目に正しいとすることを行っていた」（士師記１７章６節）と記しています。
「自分の目に正しいこと」とは頼もしい言葉として聞こえますが、実際のところ、この言葉が成立するためには「自分の目に正しいこと」が「本当に正しくなくてはならない」のです。「自らこそが正しい」と各々が主張する者達が互いの平和を保つことはできないのです。なぜなら私達の目に正しく見えることが必ずしも他の人の目に正しいものとされることはないからです。すなわち、「自分の目に正しいこと」とは結局のところ、「自分が願うこと」、「自分がしたいこと」だからです。
現在、私達の世界ではこの「自分の目に正しいこと」のせめぎあいがなされています。自分の目に正しいと思われることが、熟慮、検証されることなくすぐにインターネット上につぶやかれます。そのつぶやきは瞬く間に世界に伝えられ、ある者はそれに賛同し、ある者はそれを攻撃します。インターネットに限らず、私達は家庭、職場、路上、スーパーのレジで互いに「自分の目に正しいこと」を主張し合い、そこが修羅場となってしまうということは決して珍しいことではありません。そのような意味で士師記の時代も今も何ら変わらないのです。
こうして、イスラエルの民はカナンの地にあった神々・世俗文化の中に埋没していくようになりました。そして、もはやこれ以上、落ちることはないだろうというほどに最悪な状況に彼らは陥っていったのです。まさしくそれはイスラエル民族が失われるか、存続するかというような危機的な状況でした。
彼らはこれから後、長い間、この「自らの目に正しいこと」に従い、あるパターンを繰り返します。すなわち信仰を捨てて、異教の偶像礼拝に陥り、外敵によって力を失い、落ちるところまで落ちて、そうなってから神に助けを求め、神様は彼らを憐れみ、再び、立ち上がっていくというパターンで、そのような中で神は「さばきつかさ」という者達を起こし、イスラエルを守ろうとされます。聖書の士師記にはそんなさばきづかさが１４名、出てくるのです。
さばきづかさとは一時、民の先頭に立ち、イスラエルを守り、まとめるために生きたリーダーでした。その傾向として、さばきつかさがいる間は彼らは比較的に安定しているのですが、彼らがいなくなるとイスラエルはまた世と妥協し、神を捨て、偶像礼拝とそれに伴う生活習慣に同化していき、それにより彼らの生活そのものがまたどん底に落ちていくというようなことが実に４００年もの間、繰り返されました。今日はそのさばきづかさの中、サムソンという人にフォーカスしたいと思います。
サムソンの生涯の始まりは祝福されていました。彼の母親は妊娠中も謹厳な生活をするように命じられ、サムソンは母の胎内にいる時から既にナジル人（神の身を捧げた人）としての胎教を受け、生まれるとすぐにナジル人として養育され、頭にカミソリをあてることや、ブドウの実から産するものを食べることは禁じられながら、育ち、母の胎にいる時から使命が与えられていました。そう、彼はペリシテ人の手からイスラエルを救うことが彼の生涯の使命であり、彼は２０年の間、イスラエルを導きます。実際、サムエルが生まれた時、イスラエルはペリシテの支配のもとに屈しており、その期間は４０年続いたのです（士師記１３章１節）。
「その子は成長し、主は彼を恵まれた」（士師記１３章２４節）とあるとおり、サムソンの生涯は順風で、主の霊は早くも彼の上に臨んでおりました。神は彼には特別に「腕力」という賜物を与えました。それは人よりもちょっと力持ちというようなものではなくて、圧倒的な腕力でした「サムソナイト」という旅行鞄のメーカーがありますが、その名前はこの強いサムソンのように、少々のことでは壊れないというところからきたと言われています。
ある時、ぶどう畑で獅子が彼に向ってきた時、主の霊が激しく彼に臨み、彼はその獅子を引き裂いたと記されています（士師記１４章５節、６節）。彼を捕えようとする者が綱でどんなに固く彼を縛っても、主の霊が激しく臨むと、彼の腕にかかっていた綱は焼けた亜麻のように解けました（士師記１５章１４節）。彼はろばのあご骨をもって一千人を打ち負かし（１５章１５節）、多くのペリシテ人に取り囲まれても、いつもたやすく彼らを打ち負かしました。そう、それは神がサムソンに与えた特別な力でした。
彼の上に力強く神の霊が臨みますと彼にはおよそ考えられない腕力が与えられました。それは常人には持ちえない怪力であり、それをもって敵を打ち負かしました。まさしくその様は超人でした。しかし、それは彼の腕力に臨むものであって、彼は自らの心を整えるということはありませんでした。
そうです、彼には自分を制することができないという欠点がありました。多くの敵を圧倒的に打ち負かすことはできても、自らの心をコントロールすることはできなかったのです。箴言はこのような人について二つのことを示しています『自分の心を治める者は城を攻め取る者にまさる』（箴言１６章３２節）。『自分の心を制しない人は、城壁のない破れた城のようだ』（箴言２５章２８節）。
言うまでもなく、腕力、財力、知力、どれもそれらの力の司令塔である心がコントロールされなければ、その力が大きければ大きいほど、その影響力が大きければ大きいほどに大きな災いとなります。勝つか負けるかの真剣勝負の世界に生きているプロスポーツ選手やビジネスマンにしても、その世界での連戦を経て、最後の敵は自分自身だと言います。そうです、それは自分の心をいかに治めるかという戦いなのです。
旧約において神の霊はしばし選ばれた人に臨まれました。このサムソンにも神の霊が望んだと士師記は記しています。しかし、興味深いことに、その霊の臨み方は新約聖書に記されているそれとは少し違いました。
私達は新約聖書の使徒行伝において、約束されていた聖霊が人々の上に臨んだことを知っています。しかし、その霊の臨み方はソロモン、サウルに注がれたものとは違いました。そうです、旧約において神の霊は主に「外なる人」の上に臨み、新約の霊はその人の「内なる人」に臨みました。ゆえにサムソンもその外なる力により、神の霊が臨んだ時に怪力が与えられ、敵を打ち負かしました。しかし、それは内なる人に臨んでいないので彼は何度も失敗をしました。そうです、彼の内なる心が取り扱われ、その心が変えられることがなかったのです。
言うまでもなく今の時代を生きる私達に必要なのはこの内なる人に臨む霊であり、私達はそのことにより自ら与えられている外なる力を正しく使うことを知ることができるのです。しかしながら私達は外なる力を受けることばかりに関心を寄せます。しかし、それは内なる聖霊の力を伴っていなければ害となりうるものなのです。
サムソンは怪力をもっていましたが、自らの心で制することができないものを抱えていました。それは異性に対する情欲でした。彼はそのことに関しては全く無力だったのです。彼はその怪力をもっていかなるものも制することができましたが、自らの心を制するためにその怪力は何の役にも立たなかったのです。
彼はペリシテ人からイスラエルを守るという使命が与えられていたにもかかわらず、こともあろうかその宿敵ペリシテの女に心惹かれて、彼女を妻としました。宿敵を妻とするなどは本来ありえないのですが、自らの怪力に頼り、自分がしたい放題をしてきたサムソンは、その女性に対する燃える情欲に躊躇なく従ったのです。
彼はこのペリシテの女との婚礼の場で、招待した客たちに謎かけをします。しかし、彼らはそれを解くことができずに、最後にはこの妻にせがまれてその答えを明かしてしまいます。そのことで腹を立てたサムソンは実家に帰ってしまい、残された妻は婚宴に来ていた花婿付添人、今日のベストマンの妻となり、彼は新妻を失います。
このようなことは常識では考えられないことですが、ペリシテ人の慣習の中では普通になされていたようでした。サムソンの目に良いと思われた土地というのは、そのような場所であったのです。
そもそも士師としての本来のはたらきは神の言葉をもって民を養い導き、諭し、励ますべきなのですが、サムソンが民に神の言葉を語っているようなことは聖書の中に何も記録されていません。ただ彼の感情により、激しく用いられるその腕力だけが聖書には記されているのです。しかし、腕力だけで民を導き、彼らの心を変えることはできません。人が変えられるためには具体的な指針、すなわち言葉が必要なのです。
妻を失ったサムソンは後、デリラという娼婦に情愛を注ぎます。サムソンが居りましたガザはペリシテの町で最も南に位置する町です。そこはエジプトとメソポタミヤを結ぶ交通の要衝で、遊女がたくさんいたようです。サムソンはどうしてこのようなところに来たのでしょう。己が身を置いて良しとしている所、そこは時に自分の願望が現れる場所です。まさしくサムソンも「自分の目に正しい」、すなわち「自分の居たい場所」に身を置くことを良しとしていたのです。なぜならサムソンが彼女たちを求める思いがその心にそもそもあったからです。
御言葉を語らないということは、彼自身も神の言葉に近い者でなかったのでしょう。そうなりますと己が私生活の指針となる基準というものが失われますが、彼は遊女で満ちている町に身を置きながらも、そのことに対する危機感というセンサーが壊れてしまっていたのでしょう。
力ではサムソンにはかなわないことを知るにいたったペリシテ人は遊女デリラのもとにいき、どうしたら彼を捕らえることができるのかをサムソンから聞きだすようにと報奨金の約束と共に裏工作をします。デリラは手を変え、品を変え、どうにかしてサムソンから聞きだそうとしますが、なかなか彼は真実を話さず、彼は三度、彼女をあざむきますが、最後に彼はその情愛に負け、全てを打ち明けます。そう彼の力の源は幼い時からカミソリをあてることがなかった長髪にあり、それが失われると彼の怪力は失われるのです（士師記１６章１５節‐１７節）。
今日も女性を政府の要人に近づかせてスキャンダルを起こしたり、必要な機密情報を得ようとする策略があり、それを「ハニートラップ：甘い罠」と呼んでいますが、サムソンもこのハニートラップにひっかかったのです。女性に弱いサムソンは、金銭に弱いデリラによって騙されました。しばしば私達の弱さは他者の弱さともつれあい、問題が起こります。
彼は結局、この遊女デリラの情に負け、自分の弱点を彼女に話してしまい、デリラは無常にも彼が眠っている間にその髪をそり落とし、力を失った普通の人となったサムソンはやすやすとペリシテにとらわれ、縄に縛られ、目をえぐり出されてしまいます。彼は圧倒的な強さをもちながら、ペリシテ人の前に敗北したのです。
圧倒的な腕力はサムソンの自信となっていました。しかし、それゆえに彼は自分の力さえあれば（そもそも、その力も全て神が彼に与えたものなのですが）いつだってペリシテは倒せると考えるようになりました。誰の助けは必要ない、自分一人でできると考えました。ゆえに士師記を読みましてもサムソンには彼をサポートする人なく、祈りの支援者もいませんでした。
主にある兄弟姉妹、私達が教会の集会に来るのは、このためでもあるのです。自らのために祈ってもらう。また誰かのために祈る。そして、本当に私達のことを考え、思ってくれる人から信仰のアドバイスをいただくのです。
サムソンは敵を制することができましたが、自分を制することができませんでした。ゆえに彼に与えられている怪力を主のために用いきることができませんでした。否、その怪力は彼を傲慢な者にしました。このように神から与えられているよきものが仇となることがあるのです。そうです、それは彼の心が主の前に取り扱われることがなかったからです。そここそが彼を動かす、彼の人生を導く司令塔だからです。
私達はサムソンに限らずこれまで聖書の中で失敗をしてきた人たちを取り上げていますが、そこには意味があります。コリント書はその理由としてこのようなことを書き残しています。
11これらの事が彼らに起ったのは、他に対する警告としてであって、それが書かれたのは、世の終りに臨んでいるわたしたちに対する訓戒のためである。12だから、立っていると思う者は、倒れないように気をつけるがよい（１コリント１０章１１節ー１２節）
そうです、サムソンの失敗がこのように聖書に記されているのは私達のためであり、そこからは私達はどうあるべきかを学ぶのです。パウロはコロサイ書において「わたしのうちに力強く働いておられる方の力により、苦闘しながら努力して」と書いています（コロサイ１章２９節）。そうです、パウロもここで「力」について書いておりますが、それは彼の心に働くキリストの力なのです。その心に力強く働いている力により、彼は日々、苦闘しながら努めて生きているというのです。
初代の教会が建てあげられていくにあたり、神はイエスの弟子たちに聖霊を注ぎました。1五旬節の日がきて、みんなの者が一緒に集まっていると、2突然、激しい風が吹いてきたような音が天から起ってきて、一同がすわっていた家いっぱいに響きわたった。3また、舌のようなものが、炎のように分れて現れ、ひとりびとりの上にとどまった。4すると、一同は聖霊に満たされ、御霊が語らせるままに、いろいろの他国の言葉で語り出した（使徒行伝２章１節ー４節）。
そうです、彼らはその時、外なる力が与えられたのではなく、彼らは内側から聖霊に満たされ、様々な言葉を語りだしました。その言葉をもってそこから彼らは世界各地に出ていき、福音を伝えたのです。彼らの内に臨んだ聖霊により、彼らはどんなに迫害を受けても力強く、福音を語り続けたのです。
私達は外なるものに目を注ぎます。腕力、軍力、財力、知力、これらのものは今日、私達を引きつけます。しかし、これらのものが私達に有益になるか否か、それは一つのことにかかっています。すなわち、それはその力を用いる司令塔である私達の心なのです。聖書はその私達の心を上から下から照らし続けるものです。

“Samson: First of all, check our control tower”

We have been looking at the weaknesses and failures of Adam, Eve, Abraham, Lot, and Noah from the book of Genesis; and Moses, Aaron, and Balaam from the book of Exodus and Numbers. After God created man, man greatly increased in number, and the Israelites emerged from them. And through the Israelites, God has shown Himself in our history. God promised the land of Canaan for the Israelites, and Moses aimed to get there. But he could not enter the land and Joshua, his successor, conquered the land after Moses.
Joshua took leadership of the Israelites with faith and told them “do not be compromised by the other gods of Canaan.” He was the leader who always had a sense of crisis and warned and encouraged the Israelites. He kept warning the Israelites because he knew that if they ignored their God and followed the Canaanite gods, they would perish.
Living in the wilderness, their lifestyle had been nomadic, always moving from place to place, but after they settled into the promised land of Canaan, they learned to stay and cultivate the land. Agricultural living meant that they sought out abundant harvests. They adopted the agricultural ways and customs of the people who lived there before them. But that also meant that they had accepted and adopted their rituals of pagan worship. And slowly, they turned to idolatry in praying to gods for their harvest.
The gods of harvest are always linked with fertility and that led them to sexual corruption. Historians say there were many civilizations in this world, but they have all perished, and the reasons for this is sexual corruption. As I had preached about two weeks ago, Israel could fight back against their armed enemies but they could not win against the temptations of the women of Moab.
Some time had passed since then, and Joshua had passed. A look into such time is described of in the book of Judges. In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit (Judges 17:6).
The words, “to do as we see fit” sounds promising, but in reality, it needs “what we see as fit” must actually be “truly right”. It is very difficult to keep the peace among people who do as they see fit, because what they think is right is not always right for others. In other words, “as we see fit” is “as we wish” and “as we want”.
The conflict between what is, “right in one’s eyes” is constantly going on in this world around us. The thing that is right in one’s eyes are immediately voiced as tweets and posts online without any inspection or consideration. If a person approves of something, there will always be others that will attack it. Not only is this seen on the internet, we insist on “the thing that is right in our own eyes” to each other at home, in the workplace, in the streets, at the cash register of the supermarket, and create conflict. We are not different from the people in the Book of Judges.
From this point, they continue to repeat this cycle of doing what is “right in their eyes”. In other words, they abandoned their faith and worshiped pagan gods, lost power against their enemies, hit rock bottom, asked God for help, and God brought them back up out of mercy. During that time, God raised the Judges to help Israel. There were fourteen judges in the Book of Judges.
The Judges were the leaders who stood before the Israelites to make order. While the judges were looking over them, things were good and stable, but once they were gone, the Israelites compromised with the pagan world and abandoned God for the pagan lifestyle. They had continued this cycle for 400 years. Today, we would like to focus our attention on one of the Judges, Samson.
The beginning of Samson’s life was blessed. His mother was ordered to live a dedicated life from the time she was pregnant. Samson was dedicated to God and he was raised as a Nazirite. His head was never to be touched by a razor and he was not permitted to eat any grapes. Yes, his mission was to protect and to save the Israelites from the Philistines. He leads the Israelites for twenty years. When Samson was born, the Israelites had been threatened by the Philistines and they had been ruled over for forty years.
As the Book of Judges mentions, He grew and the LORD blessed him (Judge 13:24). His life was blessed and God’s spirit was upon on him. God gave him a special physical strength. It was not like the strength of just any strong man, but it was an overwhelming physical strength. We know of the suite case company “Samsonite”, in which its name comes from this man Samson. It was named so because of its unbreakable strength.
One day at the vineyards, a young lion came roaring toward him, the spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him and he tore the lion apart (Judge 14:5,6). On another occasion, when the Philistines tied him up with ropes but he dropped them like charred flax fibers. He had also taken a donkey’s jawbone and struck down a thousand men. Yes, this was the kind of strength God gave to Samson.
When God’s spirit was with him, he gained the power. He was so powerful that he could easily beat his enemies, but even with such overwhelming strength, he could not manage his heart. He was victorious over him many enemies. He was a superman, but he had his faults. Yes, he could not control himself. He could control his enemies but not himself. The book of Proverbs describes such a man as following; Better a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city (Proverb 16:32). Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control (Proverb 25:28).
Needless to say, if we cannot control our heart, our physical strength, financial power and intellectual gift can be the cause of trouble. Sometimes, professional athletes and businessmen confesses that the real enemy is not from the outside but that they actually come from within their hearts. They have found this truth after countless struggles in their real world.
God’s spirit was poured on to men in the Old Testament like Samson, but interestingly, the way of pouring is different in the New Testament from the Old Testament.
We know that the Holy Spirit was poured onto the people in the book of Acts, but that seems different from Solomon in the Old Testament. The spirit was poured on the outward qualities of the person in the Old Testament and poured in the inward qualities of people in the New Testament. Therefore, Samson beat the enemies with his outward power, but he failed because the spirit was not at work within him. Yes, his heart was not treated nor changed.
Needless to say, we need the Holy Spirit in our hearts to change us, but we always only see our outward strength. Our outward show of strength will eventually give way and cause trouble without the Holy Spirit’s strength within us.
Samson had super power but he did not have the power of control himself from within. He was especially powerless to women. His super power is useless in controlling his heart.
He was given the mission to fight with the Philistines but he fell in love with a Philistine woman, and she become his wife. He should not have chosen his wife from the enemy but he followed his blazing passion, because he had been relied on only for his physical power. He had been doing whatever he wanted.
At their wedding ceremony, Samson gave told a riddle to his guest. But none of the guests to solve the riddle and finally told the answer to his Philistine wife. Angry of this, he left the wedding, and his wife became the wife of his best man. Yes, Samson lost his wife on the day of their wedding!
It is unbelievable that the bride become his best man’s wife on the wedding day, but that can happen according to the customs of the Philistines. That was the kind of place Samson saw fit to live.
In the first place, a Judge should lead the people by God’s words and encourage them with them. But there is no such a record in the Bible. Only his physical strength was written of in the bible. His physical strength could not lead the people. They needed practical guidance and it needed to change their hearts. Yes, they needed the words of God.
After Samson lost his Philistine wife, he loved a prostitute named Delilah. The Gaza where Samson lived was the southernmost town in the city of Philistine. That was the point of traffic between Egypt and Mesopotamia, and there were many prostitutes there. Why did Samson lived in such a town? The reason why he lived there revealed his heart. He followed what his eyes saw fit. Yes, he wanted to live in a place where many prostitutes lived, because he was attracted to them.
If he did not speak the words of God, he himself did not live by them. Therefore, he lost the directional guidance of his daily life, and lived in this Philistine town without any question. His ethical censer must have broken.
A Philistine who knew that there was no way to beat Samson by strength came to Delilah to ask for Samson’s weakness in order to capture him. They promised to reward her. Delilah tried many times to draw out his weakness many ways, but he did not confess and deceived her three times. But finally, out of his affection for her, he confesses the origin of his power. He tells her that his power comes from his long hair that has never touched a razor, and if his head is shaved, he would lose his superhuman strength (Judge 16:15-17).
What we have looked at today can be called a “Honey Trap”, a trap in which a woman approaches a government official to gain secret information. Samson was also caught in such a trap. Samson who was weak to women was deceived by Delilah who was weak to money. Our weaknesses and the weaknesses of others can very often bring about problems..
As a result, Samson told his secret to Delilah and she shaved his hair while he was asleep. His strength was reduced to that of a normal man, and he was caught by the Philistines with rope and his eyes were taken away. He lost to the Philistines.
His super power gave him confidence, but that strength also made him boast. He had forgotten that his power came from God. He had always won against the Philistines by himself. Therefore, he had no partner nor supporter.
Dear brothers and sisters, this is one of the reasons, we come to church. We need prayer from our fellow brothers and sisters. We ourselves also pray for others, and we will be given wise words of advice from those who care for us and we trust.
Samson could beat his enemies, but he could not control himself. Because of this, he could not fully use his power for the work of God. The strength he had made him boast. Sometimes, our gifts can become the source of our troubles. Yes, it is because his heart was not examined by God. His heart, which is the control tower of his life.
We have been looking at people in the bible, each who had come across trouble and failed, but there is a reason to this. It is written in 1 Corinthians,
11 These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the culmination of the ages has come.12 So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! (1 Corinthians 10:11-12)
Yes, Samson’s failure is written in the Bible for us, so that we may learn from it. Paul said in the book of Colossians, To this end I strenuously contend with all the energy Christ so powerfully works in me (Colossians 1:29). He mentions power, and that is the energy of Christ, powerfully working in us. We strenuously contend with all His energy within us.
When the first church was built, God first poured the Holy Spirit on the people of Christ. “When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them” (Acts 2:1-4).
They did not receive the Spirit on their outward strength, but they were filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke different languages. They went out with those words and spread them to the world. Because they were filled with the Holy Spirit, they kept going even though they faced persecution.
We tend to focus on what we can see outwardly. We are attracted to physical, military, financial and intellectual power, but all of these things depend on one thing for them to work to our benefit. Yes, they all depend on our hearts, which is our control tower. The Bible makes clear what is in our hearts, both from top and bottom.
Dear brothers and sisters, this is not something that can be managed by an annual checkup. Our gifts from God are to be managed through our weekly worship services, Bible Studies, and our daily spirit filling relationship with the Lord. Let us pray.
