今、抱えている問題が三年後に解決するのならいいでしょう。しかし死とは私達の人生の最後の最後まで保留されているものなのです。ということは生きる限り、この死の問題を抱えて生きるというこです。ですから、まず、この問題に対する解決と勝利を得て、人生を歩んでいきませんか。それでなくても人生の旅路において背負うものは重いのですから、死への不安とか恐れというものを背負ったままこの人生を歩むのはしんどいでしょう・・・。

復活のイエスが出会った人達

人間の人生を二つの言葉で言うことが許されるのなら、私達の人生は生まれ、そして死ぬ、それが私達の人生です。私達は既に生まれるということは体験しておりますが、今朝、ここに皆さんがいらっしゃっているということは、私達はまだ「死ぬ」ということは体験していないということになります。
夕飯の準備をしていたとしましょう。あるいは締め切りに追われた仕事をしていたとしましょう。そのような時に今、家族の車が家の近くで動かなくなってしまったと電話があれば、私達はすぐにその現場に向かうでしょう。そうです、まな板に包丁を置いたまま、読みかけの本を開いたまま、私達は現場に向かいます。
「死」というものもこれに似たところがありまして、「その時」が突如、来ますと私達は取りかかっていることをそのままにして、そこを立ち去らなければならないのです。しかしながら「車の故障」と「死」との違いは、車の故障の場合、問題が解決すれば帰宅し、再びやり残していたことに取りかかることができるのに対して、死の場合は、それができないということです。
まだこの死を経験していない私達はいつの日か、その時を迎えることになります。私達はそのことを考えると不安と恐れに包まれます。寂しさや悲しみで心があふれます。その日がいつなのか私達には分かりませんが、確かなことはその日は必ずやってくることと、その日がこの地上での私達の最後の日となるということです。
私達が何か問題を抱えているのなら、それをなるべく早く解決して、心安んじて生きていきたいものです。問題を抱えたまま生きることは決して望ましいことではありませんでしょう。死に対する問題とは「それが何なのか分からない問題」で、その死は人生の一番最後にあるのですから、この死に対する備えをしておかないと、私達は生涯、恐れと不安を抱え続けることになります。
今日は「イースター」です。イースターの本当の意味を知らない人もいるでしょうが、大抵の人はその日は「イエス・キリストの復活」を祝う日なのだということを知っています。私達はイースター以外にも母の日、父の日、レイバーディー、独立記念日と特別な日を毎年、迎えますが、これらの日はとても分かりやすく、身近なものであり、現実的なものです。しかし、イースターに関して言えば、それはこれらの日とは全く違います。なぜなら、その日は死んだ者が甦ったことを記念する日なのですから・・・。この現代社会にこのような死からの復活を記念する日が定められているのは驚きです。そう、イースターは今日も私達に語り続けているのです、「イエス・キリストは十字架につけられて死んだ・・・。だがしかし、彼は死を打ち破り、甦った」と。
先週、お話ししましたようにイエス・キリストは両手両足を十字架に打ちつけられ、わき腹を槍で刺され、その死が確認されて墓に収められました。そのキリストがもし復活して人の前に姿を現したということになれば、そのインパクトは決して小さなものではありません。今日はその復活したキリストに出会った三人の人についてお話しします。
ここにマグダラのマリアという女性がいます。聖書は彼女の人となりについて「かつて七つの悪霊に憑かれていた女」であったと記しています（ルカ８：２、マルコ１６：９）。聖書では七という数字は完全数です。その数の悪霊に憑かれていたというのですから、彼女の私生活がどんな凄まじいものであったかを私達は容易に想像できます。そうです、それは‟滅茶苦茶“だったことでしょう。
イースターについて私達がまず驚くことはイエス・キリストはこのマグダラのマリアに一番最初にその復活の姿を現したと聖書が記録していることです。「週の初めの日の朝早く、イエスはよみがえって、まずマグダラのマリヤに御自身をあらわされた。イエスは以前に、この女から七つの悪霊を追い出されたことがある」（マルコ１６章９節）
皆さん、七つの悪霊にとりつかれていたこのマグダラのマリアについて私達が彼女の人となりを思いめぐらす時に、彼女がどんな人であったのか、容易に想像できます。すなわち、マグダラのマリアとはかつて彼女を見る者が皆、避けて通るような人、自分の言動を制することができなかった人、友人などは一人もいなかった人、家族との関係が断絶していた人、自尊心など到底もてなかった人・・・。
それがこのマグダラのマリアでした。そんな彼女でしたが「七つの悪霊につかれた女」と名指しされ、そのように取り扱われている人には一つの特徴があります。それは、そのような人は自分には問題があるということを知っていて、そこから抜け出したいと願っているということです。
イエス・キリストはそのはたらきを始めた頃、有名な山上の教えをされましたが、その時に彼女のような人についてこう言われていました。『心の貧しい人達は幸いである。天国は彼らのものである』マタイ５章３節。
イエス様は自らの心の惨めさ、救いようのない自分の心の実態を嘆く人に向けて天国とはそんなあなたたちのものなのだと言われました。そして、この言葉を実証するかのように死んで甦ったキリストは一番最初にこの女に姿を現したのです。
先週はイエス様が十字架の上で語られた「父よ、彼らをおゆるしください。彼らは何をしているのか分からずにいるのです」という言葉について話し、その「彼ら」とはピラトであり、ローマ兵であり、律法学者、パリサイ人であったとお話ししましたが、驚くべきことにこのかつて七つの悪霊にとりつかれていた女には、彼らが持ち合わせていた常識や知識は何らありませんでしたが、彼らが有していない「自分が何をしているのか分からずにいる」ということはよく分かっていたのです。そう、彼女は自分がどんなに滅茶苦茶な生き方をしているかということを知っていたのです。救いはこの自覚から始まります。
主にある皆さん、マリアがイエスと出会うことにより、新しい人生を歩み始めることができるようになったように、私達もマリアのように「自分が何をしているのか分からずにいる」という自覚があるのなら、イエス・キリストとの出会いは私達のすぐ側にあるのです。
イエス様が復活なさって、その意思をもって、その姿を現されたもう一人の人がいます。イエスの１２弟子の一人、ぺテロです。あえて言うまでもありませんが、彼はイエスが十字架にかかる前にこんな大言壮語をしていました。「たとい、みんなの者がつまづいても、わたしは決してつまずきません」（マタイ２６章３３節）。「たといあなたと一緒に死なねばならなくなっても、あなたを知らないなどとは決して申しません」（マタイ２６章３５節）と他の弟子たちが共にいる場所でイエス様に言われたのです。はたして他の者達、すなわち「みんなの者」と名指しされた者達はどんな気持ちでこのペテロの言葉を聞いていたことでしょうか。
しかし、ぺテロはこの言葉のわずか数時間後にこんな経験することになります。そう、この言葉の後にペテロは捕えられていったイエス様の後をつけていきます。あれだけのことを言ったのですから、さすがにそこで逃げることなどできないでしょう。そして、かろうじてイエス様が捕えられていった大祭司の中庭にまでは潜入したのです。しかし、そこで彼はその時まで知ることがなかった自分の姿を見ます。
６９ペテロは外で中庭にすわっていた。するとひとりの女中が彼のところにきて、「あなたもあのガリラヤ人イエスと一緒だった」と言った。７０するとペテロは、みんなの前でそれを打ち消して言った、「あなたが何を言っているのか、わからない」。７１そう言って入口の方に出て行くと、ほかの女中が彼を見て、そこにいる人々にむかって、「この人はナザレ人イエスと一緒だった」と言った。７２そこで彼は再びそれを打ち消して、「そんな人は知らない」と誓って言った。７３しばらくして、そこに立っていた人々が近寄ってきて、ペテロに言った、「確かにあなたも彼らの仲間だ。言葉づかいであなたのことがわかる」。７４彼は「その人のことは何も知らない」と言って、激しく誓いはじめた。するとすぐ鶏が鳴いた。７５ペテロは「鶏が鳴く前に、三度わたしを知らないと言うであろう」と言われたイエスの言葉を思い出し、外に出て激しく泣いた。（マタイ２６章６９節-７５節）。
マグダラのマリアのように、私達はこのことが起きた後のペテロの心境を想像することができます。すなわち彼は自分に絶望し、自分の言動を悔い、とにかく自分が情けなくて、情けなくて、イエスとの関係はこれで終わりだと思いました。
しかし、イエス様は自己嫌悪にさいなまされている、そんな彼に特別にその姿を現し、親しく彼に語りかけ、それからの彼の人生に確固たる使命をお与えになりました。そう、イエス様は彼に言われたのです。「あなたは私を愛するか。私の小羊を飼いなさい」（ヨハネ２１章１５節‐１７節）。ペテロは生涯、このイエスの問いかけを忘れることなく、まさしく主の羊を養い育むことに生涯を注いだのです。
おそらく彼ほどに自分の不甲斐なさを悲しんだ人はいないだろう。自分は数時間前に言ったことを全うすることもできない者なのだという自分に対する絶望感と自己嫌悪。しかし、イエス様は先ほどのマグダラのマリアのように山上の教えの中でこう言われていました。
「悲しんでいる人たちは幸いである。彼らは慰められるであろう」（マタイ5章4節）。
ペテロは悲しみました。悲しみには色々ありますが、何が一番辛いかといいますと、自分の情けなさに打ちひしがれる時です。そして、それによって誰かを裏切ってしまう時です。ペテロはどん底でした。しかし、イエス様はこのペテロに個人的に表れ、もう一度、やり直したいという彼の気持ちに応えてくださったのです。
ペテロのように悲しみの淵を生きている方いませんか。あの時に戻って、もう一度人生をやり直したいと思っている方はいませんか。キリストが復活なさり、ペテロに親しく会われたということは「人生はやりなおせる」というメッセージなのです。あなたの人生、このお方と始めてみませんか。その時、あなたは神様があなただけに与えてくださる使命をも示してくださるでしょう。
最後にもう一人の人を聖書は記録しています。トマスというキリストの弟子についてページを割いています。イエスがその復活なさった体を弟子の前に現された時、イエスの１２弟子の一人、トマスはそこに居合わせませんでした。その時のことがヨハネ２０章に書かれています。
２４十二弟子のひとりで、デドモと呼ばれているトマスは、イエスがこられたとき、彼らと一緒にいなかった。２５ほかの弟子たちが、彼に「わたしたちは主にお目にかかった」と言うと、トマスは彼らに言った、「わたしは、その手に釘あとを見、わたしの指をその釘あとにさし入れ、また、わたしの手をそのわきにさし入れてみなければ、決して信じない」。
そして、それから続いて８日経った日のことが書かれています。
２６八日ののち、イエスの弟子たちはまた家の内におり、トマスも一緒にいた。戸はみな閉ざされていたが、イエスがはいってこられ、中に立って「安かれ」と言われた。２７それからトマスに言われた、「あなたの指をここにつけて、わたしの手を見なさい。手をのばしてわたしのわきにさし入れてみなさい。信じない者にならないで、信じる者になりなさい」。２８トマスはイエスに答えて言った、「わが主よ、わが神よ」。２９イエスは彼に言われた、「あなたはわたしを見たので信じたのか。見ないで信ずる者は、さいわいである」。
またヨハネ１４章１節‐６節にはまだイエスが十字架にかかる前の出来事として、イエスが言われた言葉に対して、こんなトマスの言葉があります。
１「あなたがたは、心を騒がせないがよい。神を信じ、またわたしを信じなさい。２ わたしの父の家には、すまいがたくさんある。もしなかったならば、わたしはそう言っておいたであろう。あなたがたのために、場所を用意しに行くのだから。３そして、行って、場所の用意ができたならば、またきて、あなたがたをわたしのところに迎えよう。わたしのおる所にあなたがたもおらせるためである。４わたしがどこへ行くのか、その道はあなたがたにわかっている」。 ５トマスはイエスに言った、「主よ、どこへおいでになるのか、わたしたちにはわかりません。どうしてその道がわかるでしょう」。 ６イエスは彼に言われた、「わたしは道であり、真理であり、命である。だれでもわたしによらないでは、父のみもとに行くことはできない。
皆さん、これらからも分かるようにトマスは分からない事柄をそのままにしておくことができない人でした、事柄を自分の頭だけで理解しようとしました、自分の理解を超えたことを信じるなんてとうていできない人でした。今までお話した二人のように、イエス様はかつて山上の教えにおいてこう言われていました。『義に飢え乾いている人達は、幸いである。彼らは飽き足りるようになるであろう』
トマスは知りたかったのです。理解したかったのです。そして信じたかったのです。しかし、死んだ者が復活するなんて到底、信じることができなかったのです。イエス様はそのトマスの求めに対して、自らがその姿を彼に現し、見ずに信じることの幸いへと彼を導かれたのです。
トマスのようにイエス・キリストを知りたいと思われている方いませんか。しかし、見えないキリストのことを信じることなんてできない。生きるとは何か、死ぬとは何かを知りたいと願っている方はおりませんか。見えることばかりに振り回されている。かといって見えないものなんて信じることなどできないという思いで暮らしている方いませんか。イエス様はそんな私達を十二分に承知で言われるのです「見ないで信じる者はさいわいだよ」と。
主にある兄弟姉妹、私達の心のどこかにこのマリヤ、ペテロ、トマスの心がないでしょうか。もし、彼らの心にあったことを私達の心に見出すのなら、イースターは人事ではないのです。なぜなら、イエス様は彼らに自らあらわれたように、私達にも出会うことを願っておられるからです。
彼らは皆、死から復活されたイエス様と出会ったわけですから、その時から彼らは死を恐れの対象とは見なくなりました。自分の人生が行きつくところをイエスの姿の中に見出したのですから、死は終わりではないということを彼らは確信したのです。その希望を知ったからには、そこにいたるこの世の彼らの旅路にも変化が生まれました。そう、彼らは約束された御国にいたるまで、力強くその人生を歩み続けたのです。
最初にお話ししましたように、今、抱えている問題が三年後に解決するのならいいでしょう。しかし死とは私達の人生の最後の最後まで保留されているものなのです。ということは生きる限り、この死の問題を抱えて生きるというこです。ですから、まず、この問題に対する解決と勝利を得て、人生を歩んでいきませんか。それでなくても人生の旅路において背負うものは重いのですから、死への不安とか恐れというものを背負ったままこの人生を歩むのはしんどいでしょう。
私達はイエス・キリストの復活により、自分の人生の終着点は全てが無に帰するのではなく、そこから全てが始まる新しい命なのだということを知りましょう。今まで人生の終着点は「絶望」だと思っていたことが、実は「希望」であり、「喜び」であるということを私達が知るのなら、今日の生き方が変わります！私は一日、一日、その最高の瞬間に向かっていると思いつつ、生きる生涯はなんと素晴らしいことでしょう！お祈りしましょう。
People who met Jesus after his resurrection

If I had to describe human life in two words, it would be birth and death. We are sitting here today because we have all experienced birth but obviously have no experience of death.
Let’s say for example, you are getting ready for dinner or frantically working to meet your deadline. And then you find out your family car has broken down in the middle of the road near your house. That’s right! Without hesitation, you would drop everything to go and assist; whether it be an unfinished book or leaving half cut vegetables on the cutting board.
Somehow death is the similar situation. If the same sort of thing happens to a person, in the same way, he or she would drop everything. The difference between a broken car and death, is that after the car is fixed, we can resume our normal routine, whereas in death, we can’t do this.
We still have yet to experience this but we know it will happen. Thinking about this may cause us anxiety and fear. It may cause us to feel loneliness and sadness. We don’t know when but we know for sure we will have a last day on this earth.
If there is anything personal, you would like to resolve. Now it is the time then you will feel at ease. Holding your problems is not an ideal way to live. Problem with death is we do not know what to expect. But what we do know is that death comes at the end of our lives and we must prepare for it. Otherwise, we carry on fear and regrets.
Today is Easter. There must be a lot of people who don’t know the true meaning of Easter. But most people know Easter is celebration of Jesus’ resurrection. We celebrate other holidays such as: Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Labor Day and Independence Day. We are very familiar with those holidays. The purpose of celebration is easy to understand. But Easter is unlike any other holiday. We celebrate the person who resurrected from the death. I think it is unique to celebrate the resurrection in today’s modern society. Every year when we celebrate Easter, it reminds us that Jesus Christ died on the cross but he overcame death and resurrected.
Last week, I talked about Jesus who was nailed to the cross and was stabbed by the spear. His death was confirmed and was buried in the grave. If Jesus appear in front of people, imagine how great impact would be. I want to talk to you about three people who met Jesus after his resurrection.
There is a woman named Mary Magdalene. According to the Bible, she was possessed seven demons. (Luke 8:2, Mark 16:9) In the Bible, the number seven is the number of completeness. We can imagine how much evil inside of her. To bear that burden should be unimaginable.
The most surprising part about Easter is that Jesus first appeared to such Mary Magdalene over everyone else after he had resurrected according to the Bible. “9 When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons.”
Brothers and sisters, it is not so hard to imagine what kind of woman Mary Magdalene who possessed seven demons was. She used to be the person whom people wanted to avoid. She was the person who couldn’t control her speech and behavior. She had no friend and the relationship with her family was broken off. She didn’t have self-esteem at all.
This is Mary Magdalen. But there is one thing I want to mention. People like Mary Magdalen who possessed seven demons and who is hated by others had one characteristic. It was that they knew they had problems and were eager to get rid of those problems.
When Jesus Christ started his work, he gave the sermon to people on the mountain. Now we know it as the famous “Sermon on the Mount”. He talked about people like Mary Magdalene. “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:3)
Jesus said that heaven was for the people who grieved at their helplessness and hopelessness in their hearts. Jesus first appeared to Mary after his death and resurrection as if he proved his word was true.
Last week, I talked about Jesus’ word on the cross “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing. The bible verse “They” refers to Pilot, Roman soldiers, teachers of the law and Pharisees. Mary Magdalene who possessed seven demons didn’t have the intelligence like those people had. But amazingly, she had something those people never had. She was aware of her faults. It means she was aware of how miserable her life was. Knowing what we are doing is the very first step of our salvation.
Brothers and sisters in Christ, Mary was able to start her new life after she met Jesus. Like Mary, if we are lost in our lives, and we know that we need help, we will be closer to Jesus.
Jesus appeared to another man after he had resurrected. This is Peter, one of twelve disciples. As you know, Peter boasted his behavior before Jesus was crucified. (33 Peter replied,) “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.”(Matthew 26:23) or (35 But Peter declared,) “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you”. (Matthew 26:35) He mentioned this when other disciples were with him. I wonder how other disciples must have felt when they heard those words. Peter meant that those disciples would separate from Jesus, and he had no faith in the other disciples.
Peter had to go through the painful experience just few hours after he had boasted his faithfulness to Jesus. Peter followed Jesus who was captured. He couldn’t run away because he claimed he was a great follower of Jesus. He did barely stayed and entered the courtyard of the high priest. And then when he was asked about Jesus, Peter immediately denied knowing him.
69 Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. “You also were with Jesus of Galilee,” she said. 70 But he denied it before them all. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said. 71 Then he went out to the gateway, where another servant girl saw him and said to the people there, “This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth.” 72 He denied it again, with an oath: “I don’t know the man!” 73 After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, “Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.” 74 Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know the man!” Immediately a rooster crowed. 75 Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: “Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly. (Matthew 26:69-75)
As we imagined Mary Magdalene’s feeling, we can guess how Peter felt after it had happened. He must have been in despair and regretted what he had done. He might have felt so miserable. He thought that his relationship with Jesus was over.
Even though Peter denied knowing Jesus, Jesus appeared to him who suffered from his self-hatred. Jesus spoke to Peter intimately and gave him the firm mission for his later life. Jesus said to Peter, “Do you love me? Take my sheep” (John 21:15-17) Peter never forgot the words from Jesus and made his best for taking care of Lord’s sheep throughout his life. Peter must have been ashamed of himself.
He was in despair because he couldn’t keep what he had said only few hours before. He must have hated himself. But Jesus used to talk about people like Peter in “Sermon on the Mount”.
4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. (Matthew 5:4)
Peter was overwhelmed by grief. We feel sorrow for many reasons. We face guilt and grief the most when we let someone down, or even betray someone. Peter was miserable and at the bottom. However after his resurrection, Jesus appeared in front of Peter and gave him another chance and encouraged him who wanted to start over.
Is there anyone who was overwhelmed by grief like Peter? Is there anyone who wants to restart their own life by going back in time? The fact that Jesus resurrected and appeared in front Peter is a confirmation from God that we can start our lives over again. Would you like to start your life over with Jesus? When you do, God will give you a special mission that only you can accomplish.
Lastly, I want to talk about another person written in the Bible. It is about Thomas, Jesus Christ’s disciple. When Jesus appeared to disciples after his resurrection, Thomas, one of twelve disciples, was not with them. In John chapter 20, it is written about the incident.
24 Now Thomas (also known as Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”(John 20:24-25)
The incident happened eight days later was recorded like this.And it is written about eight days later. 26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”28 Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”29 Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” (John20:26-29)
In John chapter 14 verse 1 to 6, it is written about what Thomas asked to Jesus before Jesus was crucified.
14 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God[a]; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.” Jesus the Way to the Father 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” 6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (John 1 4:1-6)
Thomas wanted to his questions to be answered. He tried to comprehend using only his knowledge. Jesus used to say about people like Thomas in the Sermon on Mount. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” (Matthew 5:6)
Thomas wanted to know. He wanted to understand and wanted to believe. But he just couldn’t believe an incident like raising from the dead. Jesus appeared to Thomas told how blessed it was to believe without seeing.
Is there anyone who wants to believe Jesus Christ like Thomas? But may not be able to believe in Jesus because you physically can’t see him. Is there anyone who wants to know the meaning of life and death? Is there anyone who is so focused on believing in what you can only see? Jesus knows us well enough to say “blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
Brothers and sisters in Christ. Don’t you think we have similar characteristics to Mary, Peter or Thomas in our hearts? If so, Easter affects all us. Just like how Jesus wanted to meet Mary, Peter and Thomas, he wants to meet us as well.
Because they all met Jesus after his resurrection they no longer feared in death. They all met Jesus and it gave them a confirmation that death was not the end of everything. Which gave them hope and changed their lives. And they lived their lives as best as they can until they entered the promised kingdom.
As I spoke earlier, it will be all right if your problem can be solved in the next three years. But death will come to very end of our lives. It means at the times we might think about death throughout our lives. It would be hard to constantly live with this fear and anxiety of death because we have to carry many other burdens besides this. Let’s not keep our focus towards that direction and live our lives as best as we can.
Thanks to Jesus Christ, we know that death is not the end of our destination, instead it is a start of our life. Our End of Life is not hopeless, it is filled with hope and joy.
