ペテロ：キリストにあって失敗が益となる

私達は礼拝メッセージ・シリーズとしてこの半年の間、「人生の危機管理・失敗から学ぶ」ということを見てまいりました。それが早いもので五月となり、来月１８日には教会総会があり、その日から新しい教会標語と共に新しいメッセージのシリーズを始めたく、備えております。そこで、来週はピクニックとなり、再来週、六月の第一日曜日はペンテコステのメッセージを用意しています。そして、６月１１日にヨハネをもってこのシリーズを終わりたいと思います。

２０００年前に、イエス・キリストが考えていた計画は後にも先にも比類なきものでした。それは、この世界を変えようという壮大なプロジェクトでした。しかも３年、１０年、１００年、３００年、続けばいいというプロジェクトではなく、それまでの世界を全く変えようとするプロジェクトでした。
私達の常識はそのようなプロジェクトを共になそうとする同志を選ぶ場合、当然、そのことに関する専門知識や十分な経験やその人のバランスのとれた性格を考慮します。しかし、イエス様は驚くべきことに、そのようなことは全く範疇にないかのごとく、これらのものを全く有していない男達、いいえもっと言いますと、そのセレクションから一番、かけ離れていると思われる者達を１２人、選ばれたのです。そして、さらに驚くべきことは、そんな者達から始まったクリスチャニティーが現在もこの世界において人の魂の変革をなし続け、その計画は完全なかたちで成就し、今もとどまることがないことです。そう、そのプロジェクトは成就したのです。
その１２弟子の中で一番弟子と言われている人にペテロという人がいます。その人となりを私達は聖書の中からうかがい知ることができます。聖書の中には１２弟子の名簿が四度、出てきますが、そこに記されている弟子の名前の順番はそれぞれ違っているのですが、ペテロの名前だけは常にその筆頭にあります。外部の人はまずペテロに問いかけ（マタイ１７章２４節）、ペンテコステにいたるまで彼は常に弟子の間で議長格であり（使徒１章１５節‐２６節）、ペンテコステの日にまず立ち上がって説教したのもペテロでした（使徒２章１４節）。これは彼が弟子の中の年長者であったということもありますが、それ以上にやはり彼の内には何かがあったのでしょう。しかし、その彼の資質も当初はでこぼこの原石であり、粗削りでした。
ペテロは新約聖書において１６０回以上名前が出てくる人物であり、細かいところを見るとキリがありませんが、色々な彼の姿を聖書の中に見ることができます。彼は情熱の人であり、また真実な人でありました。主の召しがありました時にはためらうことなく一切を置いて主に従いました（マタイ４章１８節－２０節、１９章２７節）。主の神性をすばやく認め、「あなたこそ、生ける神の子キリストです」と告白したのは彼でした（マタイ１６章１６節）。何かといえば真っ先に口を出したのも彼であり、そのことで失敗を繰り返しました。
水の上を歩くイエス様の姿を見て、真っ先に彼も水の上を歩き出しますが、風を見て溺れかけるペテロ。十字架にかけらえる数時間前にイエス様が弟子達の足を一人一人洗われた時、「私の足は決して洗わないでください」と言いながらも「それなら私と関わりはない」とイエス様にたしなめられて、「それなら、足も手も頭も」と願ったとんちんかんなペテロ。
その他にも彼に関する記述はたくさんありますが、今日は特に一日も経たないうちに起きましたペテロの一連の出来事を見ていきたいと願っております。その時、イエス様はペテロ、ヨハネ、ヤコブだけを連れて、ゲッセマネの園において祈っていました。
その時、イエス様を捕えようという者達の足音がすぐ近くにまでやってきていました。その時のイエス様は十字架に磔にされる直前でした。その十字架にかかるということをイエス様は父なる神から自分に差し伸べられている杯を飲み干すという言葉で表現されました。イエス様はその時、「悲しみのあまり死にそうだ」と弟子たちに打ち明けました。祈りながら、その汗が血のしたたりのように地面に落ちました。
そのような時に共に祈ってもらえるように三人の弟子を伴ってきていたのです。しかし、彼らにイエス様の苦しみに対する理解はなく、眠りこけていました。彼らは二回もイエス様によって起こされ、三回目にも彼らは眠っていました。その中にペテロがいました。我々は誰かが悲しみのあまり死にそうだともだえている傍らで眠りこけることができるのです。
その時に１２弟子の一人であるユダを先頭に祭司長、民の長老など大勢の人が剣と棒をもってやってきました。ユダの接吻を合図にイエスを捕えるという手はずが整っていました。まさにイエス様を裏切ろうとするそのユダに対してイエス様は「友よ、なんのために来たのか」と言われました。そうです、イエス様は彼を「友よ」と呼ばれました。眠りこけていたペテロもさすがにこの時はただならぬ状況に目を覚ましたのでしょう、イエス様に危険がのぞんでいるということを察知し、とっさに剣を抜き、その場にいた大祭司の僕の耳を切り落としました（これがイエス・キリストの最後の癒しの奇跡となりました）。彼の心の中から込み上げてきた感情を彼は収めることができなかったのです。
イエス様はその耳を拾い上げ、もとのとおりにその僕につけてあげ、こういわれました『剣をさやに納めなさい。父がわたしにくださった杯は飲むべきではないか』（ヨハネ１８章１１節）。そして、すぐにイエス様は捕えられていきます。もし、イエス様がその僕の耳をもとのとおりに癒すことがなければ確実にペテロも捕えられたことでしょう。以降、その場に居合わせた者達は逃げ、ペテロだけがかろうじて遠くから、イエス様の後について来て、大祭司の中庭にもぐりこみました。その時にあの有名な出来事がおこりました。
イエス様の回りには不正な偽証を得ようと、祭司長、律法学者、多くの偽証者に囲まれていました。イエス様の回りにはイエス様を弁護してくれる人が一人もいませんでした。
イエス様が尋問を受けている間、ペテロは中庭で焚き火にあたっていました。そんな彼に一人の女中が来て言います（マタイ２６章６節－７１節）「あなたもあのガリラヤ人イエスと一緒だった」。ペテロはみんなの前でそれを打ち消して「あなたが何を言っているのか、分からない」と打ち消し、入り口の方に出ていきました。その中庭から出ていこうとしたのかもしれません。
しかし、別の女中が彼を見て、そこにいる人々に向かって（マタイ２６章７１節‐７２節）『この人はナザレ人イエスと一緒だった』と言われると、再びそれを打ち消して「そんな人は知らない」とペテロは誓いました。
すると今度はそこに立っていた人々が近寄ってきて言います（マタイ２６章７３節―７４節）「確かにあなたも彼らの仲間だ。言葉づかいであなたのことが分かる」。ペテロは「その人のことは何も知らない」と激しく誓いました。するとすぐに鶏が鳴きました。
実はこのようなことがぺテロの身に起こる数時間前に彼は「主よ、私は獄にでも、また死にいたるまでも、あなたとご一緒に行く覚悟です」（ルカ２２：３３）と言っていました。ついさっき言った言葉ですから忘れようにも忘れられないでしょう。しかし、その時にイエス様はこうペテロに言われていたのです「よくよくあなたに言っておく。今夜、鶏が鳴く前に、あなたは三度わたしを知らないと言うだろう」（マタイ２６章３４節）。このことを思い起こし、ペテロは大祭司の中庭から外に出て激しく泣いたと聖書は記しています。
三度、イエス様を否んだということは、たとえ一度否定しても、あとの二度はそれを打ち消していくチャンスがあったということです。しかし、ペテロは「何を言っているのか分からない」とイエスを打ち消した後に「そんな人は知らない」と誓い、「その人のことは何も知らない」と激しく誓うことによって全てのチャンスを失ってしまいました。
この時点でペテロは裏切り者、臆病者、笑われ者として彼の名前は聖書から消えていったことでしょう。しかし、イエス様はそんな彼に復活してあらわれ、親しく語りかけました。あのガリラヤ湖でイエス様はもう一度、ペテロをはじめ弟子たちにその姿を現され、ペテロに三度、親しく問うたのです「私を愛するか」と。
皆さん、イエス様はこれらのことが起こる前にペテロにこう語りかけていました。「シモン、シモン、見よ、サタンはあなたを麦のようにふるいにかけることを願って許された。しかし、わたしはあなたの信仰がなくならないように、あなたのために祈った。それで、あなたが立ち直った時には、兄弟たちを力づけてやりなさい」（ルカ２２章３１節－３２節）。
イエス様は気づいておられたのです。これからペテロがしでかしてしまうことを。まさしく、それはサタンによってふるいにかけられるようなことだということを。ペテロは激しく揺さぶれるだろういうことを。不思議なことにサタンはそれを願い、そして、それは許されたとある。なぜ、許されたのか、イエス様はペテロがそのふるいにかけられ、揺さぶられ、試みられても、彼は立ち直ることができると信じておられたのではないでしょうか。否、それだけではない、彼は一度、そのようなところをとおって、自分の自信と力というものが根底から崩される必要がある。それなくしては、彼は用いられることはないということをイエス様は知っていたのでしょう。
ゆえにその試みによってペテロの信仰がなくならないようにという、イエス様の取り成しの祈りがそこにはあったのです。弟子たちが朝、起きるといつも、その寝床におられなかったイエス様、いつも一人、寂しいところに行かれて祈っておられたイエス様。イエス様は何を祈っていたのか。彼は自分の弟子のため、そして、この荒削りのペテロのために祈っておられたのです。彼の信仰がなくならず、そして立ち直った時には兄弟達を力づけることができる男になれるようにと。
「あなたが立ち直った時には、兄弟を力づけてやりなさい」。このイエス様の言葉と共に一人の神学校の恩師の言葉が心に残っています。その恩師は１７回、学校を退学しました。普通、退学したくとも１７回はできません。言うまでもなく、師は相当の問題児だったのです。その人が牧師をしているのですから、神様のなさるわざは計り知れません。その先生が口ぐせのようにいつも言っていたことは「つまづいた者でなくては、つまづいている者を助けることはできない」ということです。イエス様はこの法則をペテロに当てはめたのです。
ペテロが大祭司の中庭で３度イエスを知らないと言ったこと。その出来事をペテロは秘密にしておくことができたのではないだろうかと思います。自分の恥をあえて記録に残しておくのもどうかと思いますから。ですから福音書を書いた仲間たちにこっそりと耳打ちすることもできたかもしれません。「お願いだから、あの時の事だけは書かないでおいてくれ」。しかし、このペテロの失敗は全ての福音書にねんごろに記されており、今や世界中の人がペテロの失態を知っているのです（マタイ２６章６９－、マルコ１４章６６節‐、ルカ２２章５４節－、ヨハネ１８章１５節－）。
それにしても四つの福音書の全てにこのことが記録されているということはどういうこなのでしょう。おそらくペテロはこのことを公にすることをよしとしたのではないかと思われます。なぜ？彼の失敗に対するイエスの愛と恵みを彼は知り、そのことは後世に伝え残すべきことだと思ったのでしょう。おそらく、このことを隠すどころか、彼は口癖のようにこのエピソードを話して聞かせたのではないでしょうか。彼がそのことを語れば語るほど、イエス様の愛の大きさが伝えられるからです。そして、失敗を語ることができるのは、彼がその失敗・をイエス・キリストにあって克服できたからなのです。
使徒行伝４章にはこれらの一連の出来事があり、復活のイエスに出会い、天来の聖霊を受けた後のペテロの姿が記されています。「この人による以外に救いはない。わたしたちを救いうる名は、これを別にしては、天下のだれにも与えられていないからである」（使徒行伝４章１２節）。それを聞いていた人たちはペテロの大胆な言葉にびっくりしてしまいました。なぜなら、二人が無学なただの人であるということを彼らは知っていたからです。人々がこのような話をやめさせようとして、彼をおどしたにもかかわらず、彼は言いました「神に聞き従うよりも、あなたがたに聞き従う方が、神の前に正しいかどうか、判断してもらいたい。私たちとては、自分の見たこと、聞いたことを語らずにはいられない」（使徒行伝４章１９節－２０節）。ここにあの大祭司の中庭でびくびくしていたペテロとは別人となったペテロの姿があります。
皆さん、イエス様がペテロに初めてお会いになった時、舟と網を捨てて従って行った時、ペテロを見られたイエス様は何と言いましたか。「あなたはヨハネの子、シモンである。あなたをケパと呼ぶことにする」（ヨハネ１章４２節）。｢ケパ｣とは「岩」という意味です。風を見て恐れ、捕えに来た者になりふりかまわず剣を振りかざし、大祭司の中庭で女中が発した言葉におおいに動揺した彼がイエスの言葉とおり、動じることがない堅固な「岩」と変えられたのです。イエス様はペテロの失敗が立て続けに起きる前に彼を岩と呼んでいたのです。そう、彼の弱さを知りつつも、その弱さが変えられ、否、その弱さゆえに彼は倒れている人を立ち上がらせるような岩となるとイエス様は信じていたのでしょう。
私達も失敗をします。失敗はそれを嘆き続けるのなら、そのままの失敗であり続けます。しかし、その失敗により、同じ境遇を歩んでいる者を励ますことができるのなら、その失敗が転じて、宝となります。失敗の数だけ多くの人たちを励ますことができます、理解することができます。これらのことは私達の失敗にイエス・キリストがかかわった時に起こることなのです。
なぜ今日のキリスト教があるのでしょうか。そのキーパーソンとなりました人にパウロという人の存在があります。彼はかつてキリスト教徒を迫害していた人です。その命を奪うことに情熱をかけていた人です。その彼が回心して、キリストを伝えることに命をかけました。かつて対極にいた人間を神は引き上げ、その対極にいる者達の気持ちが分かる男であったからこそ、彼はイエスの教えをイスラエルの一地域のから世界へと広めることができたのです。彼の迫害者としての人生は無駄ではなく、それがあったからこそ今日のキリスト教はあるのです。
今、上映されている「The Case for Christ」という映画は、この世界に神などは存在しないということを固く信じていた無神論者であったリー・ストロベルというジャーナリストの生涯を描いた実話です。彼のこの世に神などは存在しないという思いは強く、そのことゆえに彼はクリスチャンである妻との間がうまくいかず、結婚の危機を迎えていました。その彼が自分の職業であるジャーナリストが事実だけを追い求めて記事を書くように、納得のいくまでイエス・キリストの十字架と復活について全米中の学者たちに取材をし、そこから得たことを全て目の前に並べた時に、彼は神を受け入れ、神を信じたのです。そして神なき者として生きてきた彼のその人生は無駄ではなく、それがあったからこそこ彼には他の者達が持ちえない確信に満ちた証言があり、今もその証言をたずさえて世界中を旅しているのです。
ペテロとヨハネのもとに足のきかない男がやってきて施しを請うた時にペテロとヨハネは彼をじっと見つめていいました「わたしたちを見なさい」（使徒行伝３章４節）。そう、その言葉は自分の全てをあなたは見たらいいと言っているかのようです。「わたしはあなたの前に何も隠すことはない。弱い自分であり、多くの失敗を繰り返してきた男だ。よくごらん」。そして、ペテロは言います。「金銀はわたしには無い。しかし、私にあるものをあなたにあげよう」。ペテロにあるものは何ですか。数えきれないほどの失敗と、その失敗を包み込んでくれた主イエスの愛です。彼は失敗に目を留めるのではなく、その失敗から引き揚げてくださった主イエスのほうに目を留めましたから、自らの失敗を隠す必要はありませんでした。否、自分の失敗を語ることにより、イエス様の愛が明らかにされるのなら、彼はその失敗を用いてキリストの愛を伝えたのです。そう、金銀は彼にはありませんでしたが、失敗の数だけキリストの愛がありました。それをあなたにも与えようとペテロは言ったのです。
主にある皆さん、ペテロの失敗は救い難き失敗と思えました。しかし、イエス様はその失敗から彼を立ち上がらせ、彼は岩なるペテロに代えられたのです。そして、キリストが言ったように人々を励まし、キリストのもとにお連れするメッセンジャーとなったのです。この同じことが私達の人生に起きます。私達がこの人生において一番、負い目に感じているようなこと、償いきれない失敗、それを主は用いて、私達を用いられるのです。誰がこんな人生を考えていたでしょうか。そんな驚くべき生涯に今日もイエス・キリストは私達を招いているのです。お祈りしましょう。
Peter: In Christ Our Failure Become Our Benefit

For the last 5 months, we have been focusing on the message series, “Life’s Crisis Management, Learning From Our Mistakes”.
It is already May. On the 18th next month we will be holding our church’s general meeting and starting that day, I hope to start a new message series we are preparing. Next week is our annual picnic and the week after, which is the first Sunday of June, we will have a Pentecost message, thus ending our series on June 11th with John.
When we chose something, we try to chose the better no matter how small the difference is. That is the same whether it is in chosing the right toothpaste or the right marriage partner. No one deliberately buys a faulty car or old, ripened bananas. When hiring a man for a job, we interview each applicant and chose the most capable to carry out the job.
2000 years ago, the plan Jesus Christ had in mind was beyond any other. It was a grand project to change the world. It was not a project aimed to last 3 years, 10 years, 100 years, nor 300 years, but the whole world from what it was before.
It is obvious to us that when we chose a partner for a project, we consider their knowledge on the subject, experience, and character. But surprisingly, Jesus did not look for such qualifications and instead chose 12 men who could not be further off the mark from such ideals. And what is even more surprising is that from these men came Christianity which to this day continues to change the world, carrying out his plan.
Among the 12 disciples, there is one who is called the first: Peter. We can examine his life and character through the bible. The names of the 12 disciples are listed 4 times in the bible, all in different orders, except Peter who is written first. Those who came to them always asked Peter first (Matthew 17:24), he acted as the mediator through the days leading up to the pentecost (Acts 1:15-26), and It was also Peter who stood and preached first on the day of the pentecost (Acts 2:14). It was also that Peter was the eldest among the disciples, but it was also that Peter had something beyond just that. But he at first was also a rough and unpolished.
Peter’s name appears 160 times in the new testament, and there would be no end if we were to mention them all, but we can examine many aspects of his character. He was a passionate man, and also truthful. When he was called upon, he did not hesitate to leave everything and follow the Lord. (Matthew 4:18-20, 19:27) He quickly accepted the divinity of God and confessed that “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”(Matthew 16:16) Another thing is that he was also first to run his mouth and he continuously made mistakes because of it.
Peter saw Jesus walk on water and begins to do so himself immediately but then he begins to drown when he saw the fierce wind. When Jesus began to wash the feet of his disciples, Peter said, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!” (John 13:9)
There are many descriptions that describe him. But today, we would like to examine the series of events that occurred to him within a single day. Jesus had taken Peter, John and Jacob up to Gethsemane to pray.
At that time, the men who had come to capture Jesus were already there so close. It was right before Jesus had been put on the cross. Jesus had described this event as the cup he must drink from. Jesus had told his disciples that “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death”. He prayed as his sweat dripped like blood onto the ground.
He had brought the three disciples along with him so that they may pray with him in such time. Yet they did not understand Jesus’ suffering and had fallen asleep. They were woken twice by Jesus and still fell asleep the third time. Among them was Peter. We can easily fall asleep even in times when told by someone that their soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death.
At this time Judas, one of the twelve, came with an armed crowd sent by the chief priests, teachers of the law, and the elders. They had arranged a signal that the one he kisses is to be arrested. Jesus said to Judas who had come to betray him, “Do what you came for, friend”. Yes, He had called him a friend. Even Peter who had been falling asleep must have woken to such alarming circumstances as he drew his sword and cut off the ear of the high priest’s servant. (this became Jesus’ last healing miracle) He could not contain the emotion that had swollen up inside of him.
Jesus picked up the man’s ear and healed him saying, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?” (John 18:11) And thus, Jesus was soon captured. If Jesus had not healed the man’s ear, Peter would also have been captured. Then after, everyone fled from the scene while Peter alone followed after from afar, into the courtyard of the high priest. That is when the happening we all know well occurred.
Many, such as the high priest, teachers of the law, and the elders had gathered around Jesus to falsely accuse him. There was not a single person there to speak in his defense. As Jesus was being questioned and accused, Peter had sat there warming himself by a fire. Then a servant girl came up to him saying, “You also were with Jesus of Galilee.” (Matthew 26:69-71) But Peter quickly denied saying, “I don’t know what you’re talking about” and went out into the entryway. Maybe he was trying to get out from the courtyard.
Another servant girl said to the crowd, “This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth” (Matthew 26:71-72) but he denied again saying “I don’t know what you mean!”
Then some men standing there came up to Peter and said to him, “Surely you are one of them; your accent gives it away.” (Matthew 26:73-74) Then Peter swore to them, “I don’t know the man!” and immediately a rooster crowed.
In fact, a few hours before this had occurred, Peter had said to Jesus “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.” (Luke 22:33) He could not have forgotten these words he had just said. Jesus had than replied that this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” (Matthew 36:24) It says in the bible that Peter remembered this, left the courtyard, and wept bitterly.
To deny Jesus three times means that even if he had made a mistake the first time, he had the chance to correct it twice. But Peter having said, “I don’t know what you’re talking about” the first time, said not long after, “I don’t know what you mean!” and swore to them, “I don’t know the man!”, lost all of his chances.
At this point, Peter would have been remembered as a betrayer, coward, and laughing stock. But Jesus appeared to such man after his resurrection and gently spoke. He appeared by the sea of Galilee asking Peter, “Do you love me?” three times.
Before any of this had occurred, Jesus had already said to Peter, “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” (Luke 22:31-32)
Jesus had already known what Peter would do. That it is something that would be as though Satan sifting them. That Peter would be shaken by it. The strange thing is that Satan wished for this and it was allowed. Why was it allowed to happen? Was it not because Jesus believed that even though the sifting and shaking, Peter would be able to stand back up. Not only that but that by experiencing such an event once, his foundation of confidence and strength needed to crumble. Otherwise he could not be used in the Lord’s work.
This was why Jesus had prayed for his faith and strength. When the disciples woke each morning, Jesus would already be up, praying alone in a lonely place. What had he been praying about? He had been praying for his disciples and for Peter. So that he may not lose his faith; so that when he does turn back, he could be the man with enough strength to strengthen his brothers.
“And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” Along with these words of Jesus, the words of my teacher from seminary school remains in my heart. This teacher had dropped out of school 17 times. Normally, you cannot drop out 17 times even if you wanted to. As you can guess, he had been quite a problem child. Such a man is now a paster so it is clear God’s plan is far beyond our own. This teacher had always said “Only those who have stumbled can help those who are stumbling” And Jesus had just as well applied this to Peter.
Peter could have kept it secret that he had denied Jesus three times in the courtyard of the high priest. We would think twice about recording our own mistakes. He may have been able to whisper into the ears of his friends who wrote the gospels, “please, I beg of you not to write of this”. But Peter’s mistakes are clearly written of in the gospels for all the world to know. (Matthew 26:69-, Mark 14:66-, Luke 22:54, John 18:15-)
Even so, what does it mean for all four gospels to have this event recorded? I would say that Peter was okay for this to be made public. Why? He must have seen God’s love though his mistakes, and believed this to be important for future generations to know. So rather than hiding it, he may have repeatedly spoken of this story. The more he told it, the more he could tell of Jesus’ great love. The reason why he could speak of his failure was because he had won victory over it through Jesus Christ.
Acts 4 describes these events that occurred, Peter’s meeting of the resurrected Jesus, and his receiving the Holy Spirit. “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12) The men who heard this were astonished by such great words because they know that these men were unschooled. When the people commanded them not to teach any further, he said, “Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him? You be the judges! As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.” (Acts 4:19-20) Here we see Peter as a changed man from the fearful man he once was before.
When Jesus first met Peter, when he left his boat and nests to follow Jesus, what did Jesus say to Peter? “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (John 1:42) “Cephas” means “rock”. He who had once feared the winds, drawn and swung a sword around, who had been greatly disturbed by the words of a servant in the high priest’s courtyard, had changed into a grounded, solid rock. Jesus had called him a rock before he had even made his series of mistakes. Yes, although he knew his weakness, He knew that his weakness would be changed into the strength of a rock that helps the stumbled get back up.
We also make mistakes. If we continue to grieve in them, mistakes will only continue to exist as mistakes. But through those mistakes, if we are able to encourage those who walk the same path, our mistakes become our treasures. We can encourage and understand as many people as we have made mistakes. This is what happens when our mistakes are overcome by Jesus Christ.
Why does Christianity exist today? Among the key individuals is a man named Paul. He had once persecuted the church and worked to take the lives of Christians. Because he had once been the polar opposite himself, he understood the hearts of those who stood in that position, and was able to spread the teachings of Jesus beyond Jerusalem to the world. His life before of persecuting the church was not a waste. Because of it we have Christianity as it is today.
The movie “The Case for Christ”, which is currently showing in theaters, is based on the true life story of the journalist Lee Strobel who had set out on disproving the existence of a God. His conviction that God does not exist was strong, thus the relationship between him and his Christian wife was in crisis. Just as he would in his occupation as a journalist, he pursues Jesus Christ’s cross and his resurrection through collecting information from scholars all across America, eventually coming to Christ in seeing the pieces he had collected. Because he had lived without God, he found convicting evidence that no one else has had before, and continues to travel the world with it.
When a beggar came to Peter and John, They looked straight at him and said to him, “Look at us!” (Acts 3:4) It is as though to say you should see all that I am. “I cannot give you anything. I am a weak man who has made many mistakes. Look.” And Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you.” What is it that Peter had? It was the many mistakes and Jesus’ love that engulfed each and every one of those mistakes. He did not focus on his mistakes but he focused on Jesus who pulled him up from those mistakes. That is why there is no need to hide our own mistakes. If speaking of our own mistakes can show the love of Jesus, he spoke of them to make his love clear. He had no gold nor silver but he had as much of Jesus’ love as the number of mistakes he had made. That is what Peter had to offer.
Dear brothers and sister’s in Christ, Peter’s mistake seemed like one too great to come back from. But Jesus brought him back to his feet, changing him into the rock he was to be. Just as Jesus had said, he became a messenger in leading people to christ through his encouragement. This will also happen in our lives. The biggest setbacks and mistakes we see will be used for the Lord. Who could have ever imagined such a life. Jesus Christ is leading us even today, into such a surprising life. Lets pray.
