「あの人のレンズはそうとうに汚れているわ。早く気がついて、きれいにしてくれないかしら。自分でしないのなら、私がしてあげるわ・・・」
でも、その前に自分のレンズがきれいなのかを確認することは賢明なことであり、まずはそうすべきでありましょう・・・。まず私達が取り組むべきことは自らの心にある闇の自覚であり、このことから目を背けては、光に照らされて光の中を歩みだすことはできないのです。

心の闇を自覚する

私達は今、「ローマ人への手紙」を毎週、順番にみています。今日、見てまいりますローマ１章１８節－３２節までを拝読します。
18神の怒りは、不義をもって真理をはばもうとする人間のあらゆる不信心と不義とに対して、天から啓示される。19なぜなら、神について知りうる事がらは、彼らには明らかであり、神がそれを彼らに明らかにされたのである。20神の見えない性質、すなわち、神の永遠の力と神性とは、天地創造このかた、被造物において知られていて、明らかに認められるからである。したがって、彼らには弁解の余地がない。21なぜなら、彼らは神を知っていながら、神としてあがめず、感謝もせず、かえってその思いはむなしくなり、その無知な心は暗くなったからである。22彼らは自ら知者と称しながら、愚かになり、23不朽の神の栄光を変えて、朽ちる人間や鳥や獣や這うものの像に似せたのである。24ゆえに、神は、彼らが心の欲情にかられ、自分のからだを互にはずかしめて、汚すままに任せられた。25彼らは神の真理を変えて虚偽とし、創造者の代りに被造物を拝み、これに仕えたのである。創造者こそ永遠にほむべきものである、アァメン。26それゆえ、神は彼らを恥ずべき情欲に任せられた。すなわち、彼らの中の女は、その自然の関係を不自然なものに代え、27男もまた同じように女との自然の関係を捨てて、互にその情欲の炎を燃やし、男は男に対して恥ずべきことをなし、そしてその乱行の当然の報いを、身に受けたのである。28そして、彼らは神を認めることを正しいとしなかったので、神は彼らを正しからぬ思いにわたし、なすべからざる事をなすに任せられた。29すなわち、彼らは、あらゆる不義と悪と貪欲と悪意とにあふれ、ねたみと殺意と争いと詐欺と悪念とに満ち、また、ざん言する者、30そしる者、神を憎む者、不遜な者、高慢な者、大言壮語する者、悪事をたくらむ者、親に逆らう者となり、31無知、不誠実、無情、無慈悲な者となっている。32彼らは、こうした事を行う者どもが死に価するという神の定めをよく知りながら、自らそれを行うばかりではなく、それを行う者どもを是認さえしている。
この箇所を読んで心が晴れましたとか、スッキリしましたというような人はいないと思います。何と暗いことが書かれているのだろうと思われる方はいるかもしれません。ある神学者はこの聖書箇所を「夜」と名づけました。「確かにその通りだなー」と思います。確かにここに書かれていることは夜です。暗闇です。
このローマ書を書いたのはパウロです。ローマ書は１章１節－１７節が序論で、今日、読みました１８節から本論になると言われています。ということは彼はその本論の一番、最初にこのような闇について書いたということです。彼がこの手紙を書いたのはコリントという町であったと言われていますが、コリントという町は当時、堕落した町として有名でした。「コリント人のように振る舞う」ということはそのまま「堕落した生き方をする」ということを言い表す、不名誉な言葉であったと言われています。
ですからパウロがここに書き記したことは彼の人間に対する憶測ではなくて、彼が実際にコリントで日常的に目の前に繰り広げれらていることを書き記したということになりますでしょう。彼は人の現実の姿を見、その現実の深刻さを憂い、どうにかしてそこから脱して新しい生き方をしたいと願い、まずここに人の心の闇を書き記したのです。
先週、ある一日の新聞の見出しをインターネットでさっと見てみました。そうしましたらその日一日だけでこれだけの見出しがありました。言うまでもなく、これは日本の主要新聞に掲載されているもので、氷山の一角です。地方紙を見ればさらに諸々の記事がそこには掲載されていることでしょう。さらには新聞を見るまでもなく、私達は何かしらの問題と共に日々を送っています。そう、これらのことの発信源はどこにあるかと言いますと、全て、ここ、そう私達の心なのです。ここが問題の源となるところです。
今日はこのようなことを心に留めながら、この箇所から３つのことをお話したいと思います。「神の自己啓示」「人の闇」「人の光」ということです。
神の自己啓示（１９－２０）
「なぜなら、神について知りうる事がらは、彼らには明らかであり、神がそれを彼らに明らかにされたのである。神の見えない性質、すなわち、神の永遠の力と神性とは、天地創造このかた、被造物において知られていて、明らかに認められるからである。したがって、彼らには弁解の余地がない」（１９－２０）。
皆さんは「永遠」ということについて考えたことがあるでしょうか。時間の中に生きている私達には、いくら考えても分からない世界です。しかし、私達は誰かに教えられたこともないのにこの「永遠」という掴みどころのないことに心を寄せることがあります。
また私達が何か危機的な出来事に直面しますと、普段は宗教的な生き方を否定しているような人でも、その口から祈りの言葉が出てきます。日頃、自分は無神論だと言っていても、愛する我が子が瀕死の状態にあるのなら、私達は天を見上げ、
その口から祈りの言葉が出てくるのです。なぜですか。無神論であるのなら神に祈ることなどは時間の無駄でしょう。
しかし、私達は国、民族を超えて、何かに突き動かされるかのようにして自分よりもはるかに大きな存在に思いを寄せます。そして、このようなことは人間だけに与えられていることなのです。なぜでしょうか。
私達の心にはそのようなことを考える思いが予めインプットされているからです。
「え、そうなんですか、いつインプットされたのですか？」と思われる方がいるかもしれません。それに対する答えは「初めにインプットされました」ということです。そうです、あの天地創造の時、『主なる神は土のちりで人を造り、命の息をその鼻に吹き入れられた。そこで人は生きた者となった』（創世記２章７節）と書かれているとおりです。このことは人以外の動物にはなされませんでした。「あの人にはあの先生の息がかかっています」という言い回しがありますが、まさしく人は神の息のかかったものであるゆえに、私達はその時間の枠を超えた永遠に存在しておられる神について思いを寄せる、そんな心を持ち合わせているのです。人の心にだけ与えられている「理性」とか「良心」というものもまさしく、その神の残像として私達の心に予め備えられているものなのでしょう。
このローマ書の中でパウロはさらにこう書き記しています。『神の永遠の力と神聖とは、天地が造られてからこの方、被造物において知られていて、明らかに認められている』（２０）。そうです、この自然界を見渡す時に、私達はそれら小さきことから、大きなことにいたるまで偶然の産物というものを超えた知性を見ます。私達にはこの世界の背後にある創造者を感知する能力が与えられているからです。故に「神などいない」というような弁解の余地は我々にはないのだとパウロは言うのです。庭先になるトマトの実一つとっても、夜空に広がる天の川を見ても、私達はそこに神のみわざを見るのです。
これら私達の心にインプットされたものに触れながら、そして、それにも関わらず、私たちがこれらのことについて全くの無知の中にいるということに触れながらパウロは２８節以降において、さらに人間の真実な姿というものについて筆を進めています。
人の闇
28 そして、彼らは神を認めることを正しいとしなかったので、神は彼らを正しからぬ思いにわたし、なすべからざる事をなすに任せられた。29 すなわち、彼らは、あらゆる不義と悪と貪欲と悪意とにあふれ、ねたみと殺意と争いと詐欺と悪念とに満ち、また、ざん言する者、30 そしる者、神を憎む者、不遜な者、高慢な者、大言壮語する者、悪事をたくらむ者、親に逆らう者となり、31 無知、不誠実、無情、無慈悲な者となっている。32 彼らは、こうした事を行う者どもが死に価するという神の定めをよく知りながら、自らそれを行うばかりではなく、それを行う者どもを是認さえしている。
皆さん、一週間、一生懸命働いてこられて、そして教会の礼拝に行く。そして、朝からこんな言葉を聞かされる。これはたまったものではありませんね。人の諸悪について聞くために早起きする人はいないと思います。お話させていただく私もなるべくなら避けたい箇所であります。
しかし、よくよく考えますのなら、私達を日々悩ます事柄、すなわち私達がなんとかならないだろうかと思わされている、その出所とは実はこの私達の心の状態なのではないでしょうか。
体に問題があるのなら、その原因を突き止め、そこに治療がなされますでしょう。同じように私達の心のありさまに目を留め、それに対処することにより私達は多くの問題から解放されることでしょう。物事には順番というものがあり、問題を解決するためには、まずその問題の原因を見つけなければならないのです。
このようなことを話しますと、もしかしたら皆さんの中に「言われてみればそうだな。このことは確かにあの上司のことを言っている。なんとまぁー、これはそのまま夫のことじゃありませんか。なんだ、これはすばりそのまま、妻のことじゃないか」と思われている方がいるかもしれません。
確かにそのようにも聖書を読むことができると思うのですが、本当の聖書の読み方はあの人、この人のことに照らし合わせながら読むのではなく、まず自分の心に問いかけながら読むところにあります。そりゃそうでしょう、私達がこの聖書箇所を誰かのことを思い浮かべながら、読んでいても、その時、その方はこの箇所を読んでいないのですから、その方に何か変化が生まれることはありません。そして、そんなことばかり考えながら読んでいると、諸々の苦い思いが心を支配し、心苦しくなりますでしょう。そして、ため息をつきながら、こう思いながら聖書を閉じることでしょう。「あぁ、あの人さえ変わってくれたら・・・」。
あるいは私達は根拠のない優越感にひたって終わってしまうことでしょう。あの聖書に記されている取税人を前にしたパリサイ人が心に思ったように「主よ、私はこの人のような人間ではないことを感謝します」と神様に全く受け入れられないような祈りをもってそこを立ち去ることでしょう（ルカ１８章９節ー１４節）。そこから私達が得るものはなにもありません。
一日の半分が闇に包まれていますように私達の世界にも、私達の心にも闇はあります。私達はあまりこの闇について語ろうとはしません。しかしながら、小説が書かれ、映画が作られる時、そこには必ず人の心の闇が関わってきますように私達の心には闇があるのです。
私達の多くはこの闇に目を留めず、気がつかずに生きています。しかし、その闇は確かに私達の心にあるゆえに、その暮らしに影を落とします。すなわち私達は霊的に盲目なのです。しかし、私たちは少しも自分が盲目だなんてことは考えもしませんし、そんなことを指摘されましたら腹がたつことでしょう。
１８節には「神の怒りは不義をもって真理をはばもうとする人間の、あらゆる不信心と不義とに対して、天から啓示される」とありますが、このところに記されている「真理をはばむ」の「はばむ」とはフタをしてしまって、そのものが出てこないように、その上に座わることを意味するといいます。そうです、神は私達を守るために理性や良心というものを神は私達の心に予めインプットしてくださっているのですが、我々はそれらを箱に詰め込んで、その上に何食わぬ顔をして座り、好き勝手なことをしているというのです。
そして、それに対して神の怒りが天から啓示させるというのです。おそろしい言葉です。神の怒りとは何でしょうか。神の怒りと言いますと私達は天から人と硫黄が降り滅ぼされてしまったソドムとゴモラのことを思います。あるいはあのノアの洪水のこと思い起こします。しかし、ここで言われている神の怒りというのはそのような類の怒りではなく、２８節に『彼らは神を認めることを正しいとしなかったので、神は彼らを正しからぬ思いにわたし、なすべからざる事をなすに任せられた』とありますように、我々をなすべからざす事をなすに任せられたということです。
そうです、我々がどんなに邪悪なことをしても、そのなすべからざる事に任せられた、あたかも糸が切れた凧がそのままどこに飛んでいくのか分からないように、我々が理性や良心を埋め込んでしらぬ顔をしてそのフタの上に座っている、そのことをなすがままにされたということです。これは恐ろしいことです、なぜなら私達はその蒔いたものをいつか必ず刈り取らなければいならないからです。これは天から火が降ったり、止むことのない雨に打たれることよりも恐ろしいことです。それは身の上に疫病があるのに、そのまま処置されずに放置されているようなものだからです。今日、神の怒りはそのようなところにあらわされているということを私達は知らなければなりません。
牧師さんよ、そんなこと言わんでおくれ。自分はそんなことない。俺はよく見えているよ、よく分かっているよと思われるかもしれません。しかし、そんな私達に対してイエス様ははっきりと言われました「もしあなたがたが盲人であったなら、罪はなかったであろう。しかし、今あなたがたが見えると言い張るところに、あなたがたの罪がある」（ヨハネによる福音書９章４１節）
イエス様は神の目には「私たちは全て盲人なのだというのです。そんなことはない、見えている、分かっているというところに問題がある」とイエス様は言うのです。私達が主張する「正しい」、「正しくない」という基準はそもそも、その目盛り自体に問題があり、自分自身を計る目盛りと、人を計る目盛りにおいて、そうとに計測を誤っていることが多々あるのです。互いにそんな自分勝手な定規で互いを計測していますので私達の間の問題は尽きることがないのです。
あの人のレンズはそうとうに汚れているわ。早く気がついて、きれいにしてくれないかしら。自分でしないのなら、私がしてあげるわ。でも、その前に自分のレンズがきれいなのかを確認することは賢明なことであり、まずはそうすべきでありましょう。
私は今、皆さんからそうとうに嫌われてしまうようなことを話していると思います。しかし、物事には順番があるのです。まず、私達が取り組むべきことは自らの心にある闇の自覚であり、このことから目を背けては、光に照らされて光の中を歩みだすことはできないのです。
人の光
聖書の中に出てくるヨハネという人はイエスの１２弟子の一人でイエスの言動をを間近に観察し、そこからその背後にある真理を引き出すことができる人でありました。彼はこのイエスと過ごした年月を思い、また創世記の冒頭に記されている天地創造の様を心に重ね合わせ、このようなことを書き残しました。
「初めに言葉があった。言葉は神と共にあった。言葉は神であった。この言葉は初めに神と共にあった。すべてのものは、これによってできた。できたもののうち、一つとして、これによらないものはなかった。この言葉に命があった。そしてこの命は人の光であった。光は闇の中に輝いている。そして、闇はこれに勝たなかった」（ヨハネ１章１節－５節）。
そう、創世記の冒頭には『はじめに神は天と地とを創造された。地は形なく、むなしく、闇が淵のおもてにあり、神の霊が水のおもてをおおっていた』（創世記１章１節－２節）と記されています。そうです、そのはじめにこの天地には闇と神の霊があったというのです。そして、そこに神は「光あれ」（創世記１章３節）と言われると、光があったというのです。
ヨハネはこの「光あれ」という言葉がまず最初にあったと言い、その言葉は神であったというのです。この言葉により、この世界の全ては造られ、そしてこの言葉が肉体となり、我々の間に宿った、それがイエス・キリストであり、このキリストは人の光であったというのです。そして、この光は闇の中に輝き、闇はこの光に勝たなかったというのです。私達はここまで「人の闇」について語ってきましたが、ヨハネはキリストは「人の光」だというのです。
そして、これらのことをなぜヨハネが書き得たかといいますと、ヨハネ自身、イエス様の口からこんな言葉を聞いていたからなのです「わたしは世の光である。私に従って来る者は、闇のうちを歩くことがなく、命の光をもつであろう」（ヨハネ８章１２節）。『わたしは光としてこの世にきた。それはわたしを信じる者が、闇のうちにとどまらないようになるためである』（ヨハネ１２章 ４６節）。
今から２５年ほど前に私はインドのプリーという町にいました。そこはベンガル湾の浜に沿ってあるからぶきの掘っ立て小屋が立ち並ぶ漁村で、当時の日本社会の様よりも５０年ほど前の光景がそこにはありました。シャワーを浴びようとそのノブに手をかけると電流で手はしびれるし、一応、電気は通っているのですが、毎晩、度々、停電となりました。
インドの蒸し暑い夜、突然、裸電球の光が消え、真っ暗になります。そんな時、街中を歩いていると、とてつもない恐怖に襲われます。絶対に狂犬病を持っているであろうやせ細った野良犬たち、異国の地で道端にしゃがみこむ人間の輪郭だけが闇夜に見える。どうにかこうにか部屋にもどり、暗闇の中でローソクとライターを見つけて火を灯します。ローソク一本の灯火であっても部屋の中は隅々まで明るく照らされます。そこで、はじめてホッとします。
私たちには光が必要です。しかし、それは言うまでも無く煌々と輝くネオンサインではありません。その明るさの中にいながら、私達の心は深い闇に閉ざされているからです。私達に必要なのはイエス・キリストという光です。
イエス・キリストは私達の光です。イエスが言われているようにイエスに従って来る者は、闇のうちを歩くことがなく、命の光をもつことができるのです。光は今も闇の中で輝いています。そして、闇がこれに勝つことは決してないと聖書は言うのです。既に何度も申し上げていますように、物事には順番があります。まずはこのことに取り組み、その心に光を灯そうではありませんか。
皆さん、覚えていらっしゃいますか。今日の聖書箇所にいたる前にお話ししましたことを。そう、パウロはこんなことを書き記していましたね。『わたしは福音を恥としない。それはユダヤ人をはじめ、ギリシヤ人にも、すべて信じる者に、救いを得させる神の力である』（ローマ１章１６節）。このところの「神の力」の「力」という言葉の語源はギリシア語でデュナミス、すなわちダイナマイトであると。数週間前にこのことを皆さんにお話ししました時には、もしかしたらピンとこなかった方がいるかもしれません。なぜ、ダイナマイトなのか。大げさではないかと。しかし、今日の人の姿を知る時に、それは大げさなことではないのです。我々の闇は福音のダイナマイトによって打ち砕かれなければ、とてもとても、その所を光が支配する所に変えることができるようなものではないのです。
そ知らぬ顔でフタの上に座っている、そこから立ち上がり、この「福音の力」によって我々の闇を吹き飛ばしていただきませんか。お祈りしましょう。
Becoming Aware of the Darkness in our Heart
We are reading Romans in order every week. Today we will be reading from Romans 1:18-32.
18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.
21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.
24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another.25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.
26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.
28 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31 they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. 32 Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.
I cannot imagine that this verse would brighten up someone’s day or cheer someone up. One theologian named this verse “night” and I agree. What is written in these verses is very dark.
Paul begins Romans with a preface and enters into the main body starting verse 18 which we just read. Meaning, Paul began his main point by discussing about darkness. Paul wrote the letter of Romans in Corinth, which was known to be a corrupt city. The word Corinthianize means to live a promiscuous life, and originates from the lifestyle of the citizens.
So what Paul wrote in Romans was not a speculation of human behavior but a record of what he saw daily in the city of Corinth. Paul saw the reality of these people and felt grief. Paul’s wish was that people would escape this way of living and for that reason, he wrote about the darkness of people’s hearts in the beginning.
Last week, I was looking at headlines of a newspaper online. And there were this many headlines from one day. These are the published by one major newspaper in Japan, and is only the tip of the iceberg. If we look at local newspapers, we are sure to see even more publications. Even without glancing at a newspaper, we carry our own problems with us daily. The root of all of these problems is in our hearts.
With this in mind, today I would like to talk about three things from this verse. These are God’s self-revelation, the darkness of people, and the light for people.
God’s self-revelation (19-20)
19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse (19-20).
Do you ever think about “eternity”? We will never fully understand what eternity is because we are living within “time”.
But even though we are not taught about it, we tend to draw our hearts to this concept of eternity.
When we are in the midst of a large problem, even nonreligious people utter prayer from their mouths. People who usually claim to be atheist, when put in a situation where their child’s life is at risk, look up towards heaven and pray. Why? If one is an atheist, prayer is irrational and just a waste of time.
We humans, regardless of race or ethnicity, we ponder and wonder about a being greater than our existence. This trait is given only to humans. But why?
It is because these thoughts have been put in us in advance. Some might think, “Wow, I did not know that. When was it put in? The answer to this question is “in the beginning”. In the creation of the universe it says, 7 Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being (Genesis 2:7). This took place in no other animal but this man. In Japan there is an expression using the word breath. For example, “the student is breathed on by that teacher”. Which means that the student’s thoughts are very influenced by the teacher. God breathed on us humans, and therefore we ponder about eternity. Our conscience and ability to reason is also a footprint of God’s work in us.
Paul also said, 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made (20). When we look at nature around us, from the microscopic things to the most immense things, we see intelligence that is beyond random occurrence. We see these things because we have the ability to see God behind the creation of all things. Therefore, Paul writes that we are “without excuse” to deny God when we see his creations. From the tomato that we take from the garden, to the view of the Milky Way at night, we are looking at God’s works.
Paul touches on the subject of this natural wonder that is input in our hearts. Paul also writes about our lives in ignorance to God, and writes of the true nature of people starting in verse 28.
The Darkness of people
28 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31 they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. 32 Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.
You have worked hard this past week and came to this service. Then the first thing you hear in the morning is about this evilness of people. You might think, “Give me a break”. I honestly would like to avoid this verse as well.
But when we think deeply, the daily problems we encounter, the struggles that you wish would somehow be solved… Perhaps the source of these problems is in the condition of our hearts.
When we have a health issue, the cause is found and a treatment is applied. In the same way, if we examine our hearts and treat the problems within, we will become free from many problems. There is an order to everything, and the first step to solving a problem is finding the cause of it.
When I talk about these things, there may be people thinking, “When you think about it it’s true, these verses are talking about my boss”. Or “Wow this verse is about my husband/wife”.
Surely we can read the Bible in that way, but the true way to read the bible is not by applying the verses to people around us, but reflecting on our own hearts as we read. It is quite logical, thinking of this person or that person when reading our bible is not going to have any effect on that person. And if we are consumed by relating verses to other people, we may be overcome by bitterness. As a result, we may close our bible with a sigh and think, “If only that person changed”.
We may finish reading the bible with an unfounded sense of superiority. We may pray like the Pharisee that looked down on the tax collector and prayed “God I thank you that I am not like this tax collector”. God would not accept a prayer like this, and there is nothing for us to gain.
Similar to how the Earth is covered by darkness half the time, there is also darkness in our hearts. We do not speak much of this darkness, but the darkness of people’s hearts is revealed in novels and movies without fail.
Many of us do not look into this darkness, and live without realization of its existence. However, this darkness certainly exists in our hearts and casts a shadow in our lives. Therefore, we are spiritually blinded. However, we do not think for a second that we are blinded, and if someone convicts us we will probably feel angered.
In verse 18 it is written, “The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness”. The word “suppress” is a word used to describe someone sitting over a closed lid to keep in what is confined. This verse illustrates how God gives us a conscience and reasoning to help protect us, but we put these in a box and sit over it with an innocent face in order to live as we desire.
And to this, it is written that the wrath of God will be revealed. Those are terrifying words. What is God’s wrath? When we think about God’s wrath we think about the rain of burning sulfur that destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, or we may think about the flood in Genesis. But God’s wrath mentioned here is not the same kind of wrath. In verse 28 it says, 28 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. Unlike a flood, God leaves us to live in a way that leads to destruction.
No matter what terrible things we do, because God allows what ought not to be done, (what we should not be doing) like a loose kite without a clear direction, we close the lid on the reasoning and conscience that God gives us, and sit on the lid as if we do not know. This is a terrifying thing, as we will have to reap what is sown. This is worse than fire raining from above or a flood by never ending rain. It is like being left alone with a plague. We must know that this is the form in which God’s wrath is shown today.
You may say “Pastor I am not the same, I can see clearly and I understand”. But Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains (John 9:41).
Jesus says in God’s eyes we are all blind, and the problem lies in our claims of what we know and what we can see. Our assertion of “what is correct” and “what is wrong” is based on our inaccurate scale. Judgment of our own self and others are based on a mistaken scale. If we continue to measure one another with a self-centered measurement, our problems will never cease to end.
“Their lenses are cloudy. I hope they will notice and clean it soon. If they don’t clean it themselves, I’ll clean it for them”. But before we come to this conclusion it is wise for us to check if our own lenses are not clouded.
I may be talking about things that you may hate right now, but there is an order to everything. First, we are to acknowledge the darkness in our hearts, because if we turn our eyes away from this we cannot walk in the light.
The Light for people
John, who was one of twelve disciples, observed Jesus’ words and actions closely and was able to derive truth from it. John reflected on his time with Jesus and the creation in Genesis, and wrote the following.
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
In the beginning of Genesis it is written, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters”. It is written that in the beginning was darkness, and God’s spirit. And when God said, “Let there be light” (Genesis 1:3), there was light.
John writes that “Let there be light” were the first words, and those words were God. From this word, everything in the world was created, and the word became flesh, and came among us. This was Jesus Christ, and he was the light of the world for people. And this light shined in the darkness, and darkness did not overcome the light. We have been talking about the darkness of people, but John writes that Jesus is the light for people.
John wrote this because he himself heard Jesus say these things. 12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12). 46 I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness (John 12:46).
About 25 years ago, I was in a town in India called Puri. The town had primitive huts along the Bengal bay, and had the appearance of Japan 50 years before that time. When I go to take a shower, the shower knob would give me an electric shock, but sometimes there would be a blackout.
On a hot humid night in India, the bare light bulb would suddenly turn off and become pitch black. When I walk around the town, I felt an immense fear. I see thin and hungry wild dogs that look certain to have diseases. The only other things I see in the darkness are the eyes of people squatting down on the street. I return to my room, find a lighter and candle and kindle a fire. Even a small flame of a candle lights up the entire room. There I finally feel relief.
We need light. The light we need is not a dazzling neon sign. This is because in that light, our hearts are enclosed by darkness. The light we need is Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ is our light. As Jesus said, those who follow Jesus will not walk in darkness but receive the light of life. The light is still shining in the darkness, and the bible says the darkness will never overcome the light.
Do you remember, the verses from two weeks ago? Paul wrote,16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile (Romans 1:16). In “power of God”, the word “power” used in this verse comes from the etymology of the Greek word Dunamis, meaning dynamite. When I talked about this a couple weeks ago, it may not have clicked in your mind. You may have thought that this word is an exaggeration. But when looking at the nature of people, it is not an exaggeration. If the dynamite that is in the gospel does not break our darkness, it is impossible to overcome the place of darkness with light.
Let’s rise from the lid we are sitting on with ignorance, and blowout the darkness with the power of the gospel. Let us pray.
