Joy to the World!

私達は来週、クリスマスを控えています。今日も世界中の教会でクリスマスのメッセージが語られています。これからクリスマスの当日までの一週間の間にいったい何回、世界中でJoy to the Worldが歌われるのでしょうか。クリスチャンであろうとなかろうとJoy to the Worldのメロディーを私達は知っています。日本のスーパーのお総菜売り場でも、もしかしたらパチンコ屋でもこの歌は流れています。
今日はなぜJoy to the Worldなのか、そう、「この世界に喜びが訪れた」ということはどういうことなのかということを、三つのことからお話しします。まず、最初にお話ししますことは、この出来事は「歴史上の出来事」であったということです。
歴史上の出来事
この出来事の記録が書かれていますルカ２章１節ー７節をまず読んでみましょう。
そのころ、全世界の人口調査をせよとの勅令が、皇帝アウグストから出た。② これは、クレニオがシリヤの総督であった時に行われた最初の人口調③人々はみな登録をするために、それぞれ自分の町へ帰って行った。
今日、私たちの前に開かれているルカ伝はその書の名の通りルカという人によって書かれました。ルカは医者でした。医者が患者を前にカルテを取る時に、まず最初にすることは何でしょうか。カルテの名前が本人だということを確認し、その日の日づけを書き記すに違いありません。私達が大切な書類にサインをする時も、私達はそこに日づけを書き記します。時にそのことに気がつかなかったり、怠ったりしますと、後でその書類が無効になってしまうことすらあります。「時」を記すということは、“確かにこのことは起きました”ということを示す、歴史の中に刻まれた目印のようなものです。
ルカもその仕事柄でしょう、その出来事がいつ起きたかということに対して、とても注意深い人でした。彼は日づけこそつけませんでしたが、明らかに「その時」に対して明確な歴史的な位置づけをしており、そのためにその時の皇帝と総督の名前をここに書き記しています。これらの人たちの名前は聖書以外の文献にも出てくるもので、確かに実在した人達であり、ルカがこのように歴史的な人物を明確にすることにより、ここに記されている出来事、すなわちイエス・キリストの誕生はおとぎ話なのではなくて、この世界の歴史に刻まれているものなのだということをルカは強調しているのです。二つ目の出来事です。それは「人間生活の出来事」ということです。この続きを読みましょう。
人間生活の出来事
③人々はみな登録をするために、それぞれ自分の町へ帰って行った。④ヨセフもダビデの家系であり、またその血統であったので、ガリラヤの町ナザレを出て、ユダヤのベツレヘムというダビデの町へ上って行った。⑤それは、すでに身重になっていたいいなづけの妻マリヤと共に、登録をするためであった。⑥ところが、彼らがベツレヘムに滞在している間に、マリヤは月が満ちて、⑦初子を産み、布にくるんで、飼葉おけの中に寝かせた。客間には彼らのいる余地がなかったからである。
この聖書個所はイエスの父ダビデと母マリヤが全世界の人口調査をせよとの皇帝アウグストから出された勅令に従ってベツレヘムに向かう場面です。申しましたようにルカは医者です。医者ですから彼は日々、体の具合の悪い人に向き合うことを仕事としていたことでしょう。私は医者ではありませんが、おそらく医者が患者と向き合い、その病気を診察する時に、色々なことを患者から聞くと思います。「どこが痛いのですか？」「腰を痛めています」「どうしたのですか？」「この不景気ですし、税金も上がりましたから人を雇えず、自分と家族だけで朝から夜遅くまで働いてました。その無理がきているのだと思います」。このような会話によりルカは病気の背後にある患者の生活環境というものに敏感になっていたことでしょう。
ですからルカはまず「その日」を明確にしてから、その時の「社会情勢」というものを記しています。すなわちこういうことです。皇帝アウグストが全世界の人口調査をせよという勅令を出したというのです。皇帝の勅令は絶対的なものですから、その勅令はイスラエル全土に伝えられ、実際にその人口調査がなされました。この人口調査には主に二つの意味がありました。一 つは確実に人頭税を徴収すること、もう一つは兵役として仕える男の数を調べることでした。
当然、この皇帝アウグストの勅令に対して、一労働者のヨセフの願いや事情などが反映されるわけはなく、ヨセフはその決定に従わねばなりません。ですから彼はそれまでしていた家業である大工の仕事を中断し、住民登録をするためにベツレヘムに旅に出なくてはなりませんでした。ナザレからべツレヘムには距離的には三日ぐらいかかります。分かりやすくいいますと私達がロサンゼルスの日本国領事館まで歩いて登録にいくようなものです。
そしてヨセフの場合、ただ仕事を中断するということだけではなく、間もなく臨月を迎える妻マリアが共にいたのです。長い旅を彼女も一緒にしなくてはなりません。身重の女性にとって、言うまでもなく過酷な旅です。いつ出産がなされてもおかしくないという妻を連れて、ロサンゼルスまでロバで旅行しようという人はいないでしょう。しかし、それが皇帝の勅令であるならば、絶対服従なのです。
皆さん、この類のことは今日の私達の生活にもあります。私にも覚えがあります。かつて自分や家族のビザのことで、私は毎日のように米国移民局のウエブサイトを見ていたことがあります。それで気がついたのは、ビザに関するルールというのはちょくちょく変わるということです。それまで準備していたことが、ある日、突然有無を言わせずに無効になってしまうようなこともあるのです。
私達がグリーンカードの申請をしている時、次男坊は乳児で、他の子達もヨチヨチ歩きをしていました。そんな子供達を連れて、家族総出でチュラビスタの移民局に何度も通いました。
ご存知の方もいると思うのですが、あそこでは入り口で荷物検査を受け、銃をもったガードが常駐しています。また、あの室内で飲食が禁じられています。まさしくその場所は重々しい権威で満ちています。しかし、幼子には権威などは分かりません。お腹が空けば機嫌が悪くなり、泣きます、ぐずります。でも移民官は表情を変えずに厳しい監視をしています。そこで家内はトイレに行き、隠し持っていたお菓子を扉の向こうで子供に食べさせました。
ビザを受け取る側に私達はおりますから、そのために私達は理不尽と思えることでも、忍耐をもって国が命じることに従わなければならないのが私達の現実です。でも、世界の他の国に比べますと、アメリカはまだまだいいのです。到底、受け入れられないような国の政策により、息絶え絶えとなっている人達はこの世界に今もたくさんいます。
私達の住むこの国に絶対的な権威を持ち、自らを神のようにふるまう皇帝はいません。しかし、どうでしょうか。株価の変動や企業のリストラというようなことはある日、突然やってきます。それはまさにアウグストの勅令のようなものです。それによって、私達の生活は揺さぶられます。ある場合には企業の再編によって、またある場合には突然の天変地異によって、人は安定した生活を後にして、私達は住み慣れた地を離れなければならないこともあります。これらもアウグストの勅令のようなもので、この世界には私たちの願いや意志とは関係のない強い風が常に吹いているのです。木の葉が風に吹かれてしまうように私達にも時にこの暴風が吹いてくるのです。
ルカは日づけを記しました。そして、ヨセフの自分ではどうすることもできない現実の生活を書きました。そして、その彼らの生活のただ中でイエス・キリストは生まれたのです。母の胎にいたイエスはロバが歩く振動に揺られながらベツレヘムに行き、そこでは一夜の温もりを与えてくれる宿はなく、馬小屋で牛や羊が見守る中、生まれ、適当な寝台などありませんから、丁度、人の子が寝かされるのにはいいサイズの飼い葉おけに寝かされました。これ以上、人間の生活をあらわしている現実というものがありますでしょうか。
しかしながら、このような人間生活のただ中にイエス・キリストが生まれたことには神の御心がありました。どんな御心でしょうか。そう、それは私達に対する神の御心です。へブル４章１４節－１６節はその神の計画をこのように説明しています。
14さて、わたしたちには、もろもろの天をとおって行かれた大祭司なる神の子イエスがいますのであるから、わたしたちの告白する信仰をかたく守ろうではないか。15この大祭司は、わたしたちの弱さを思いやることのできないようなかたではない。罪は犯されなかったが、すべてのことについて、わたしたちと同じように試錬に会われたのである。16だから、わたしたちは、あわれみを受け、また、恵みにあずかって時機を得た助けを受けるために、はばかることなく恵みの御座に近づこうではないか（へブル４章１４節－１６節）。
この後、この若い夫婦と幼子イエスはエジプトに逃れていきます。そう、その様は避難民です。そして、エジプトから戻り、ガリラヤのナザレという町に暮らし始めます。どうやら父ヨセフは早くして亡くなったようで、イエスは長男として父の仕事であった大工をしながら、家族を支えていたようです。当時、建設会社などありませんでしょうから、イエス様はナザレの町でハンディーマンのようなことをしていたのでしょう。イエス様が語られたたとえ話の中には給料の話や利子の話、家を建てる時の予算などの話がでてきます。これらは全てイエス様の生きた暮らしの中でイエス様が実際にご自身、体験なさったことなのでしょう。
確かにイエス様はクレジットカードの詐欺にあうことはなかったでしょう。働いていた会社が倒産するというようなことや、車を盗まれたりというようなことはなかったでしょう。しかし、イエス様が経験されたことは、私達が日々、直面していることと同じだったのです。
そのような意味でこのへブル書が言いますようにイエス様は私達と同じ試練を通られたのです。父なる神もイエス・キリストご自身もそこに身を置くことをよしとされたのです。
あなたは涙を流したことがありますか？ キリストも涙を流されました。 あなたは裏切られたことがありますか？ キリストも裏切られました。 あなたは空腹や喉の渇きを覚えたことがありますか？ キリストも空腹と喉の渇きを覚えられました。 あなたは不正な扱いを受けたことがありますか？ キリストも不正な扱いを受けられました。 あなたは痛みに苦しんだことがありますか？ キリストも痛みに苦しまれました。 あなたは苦悶したことがありますか？ キリストも苦悶されました。 あなたは愛する者をなくしたことがありますか？ キリストも愛する者をなくされました。 あなたは拒絶されたことがありますか？ キリストも拒絶されました。
イエス･キリストがマリアの子として生まれた理由は、ただいくつかの点においてということではなく、あらゆる点で私達のようになることにより、私達が日々、直面している諸々の事柄がどういうものであるかということをご自身が身をもって経験するためであったのです。三つ目の事をお話しします。それは「天の出来事」ということです。
天の出来事
皆さん、ここまで私達は歴史に記録され、私達にも共感できる出来事というものを見てまいりました。私達にもとても理解しやすいことです。しかし、それと平行して、聖書は天の啓示というものを記していることにも気がつきます。そう、その時、野宿をしていた羊飼いに御使いが現れてこういったのです。
「恐れるな。見よ、すべての民に与えられる大きな喜びを、あなたがたに伝える。今日、ダビデの町に、あなたがたのために救い主がお生まれになった。この方こそ主なるキリストである。あなたがたは幼子が布にくるまって飼葉桶に寝かしてあるのを見るであろう。それが、あなたがたに与えられるしるしである」（ルカ２章１０節－１２節）。
この言葉を伝えた者は人間ではなく、み使いだと聖書は記しています。このことは明らかに私たちの日常とは全く一線を画すことであり、このようなことに関して私達もまるでおとぎ話のようにこの話しを受け止めます。医者として冷静にこの出来事が起きた時を書き記し、その時の社会背景を記録したルカはなぜこのような理性を超えた出来事を書き残しているのでしょうか。答えは一つしかありません、そうです、その出来事は実際に起きたからです。
私達は今、ルカという作者が書いた小説を読んでいるのではありません。開口一番、「はじめに神は天と地とを創造された」（創世記一章一節）と聖書が記している限り、人間の理解とか能力をはるかに凌駕している神について記している書物が聖書なのですから、私達が頭で分かるようなことだけを記しているようでは、それはおかしいのです。このイエス・キリストの誕生は確かに歴史に刻まれた出来事であり、イエス・キリストが生きた暮らしというものを書き記していると同時に天と交錯するような出来事も書かれているのです。
御使いは「あなたがたは幼子が布にくるまって飼葉桶に寝かしてあるのを見るであろう。それが、あなたがたに与えられるしるしである」と言いました。御使いはここで「飼葉桶で布にくるまって寝かしてある幼子」を強調し、それが「私たちに与えられるしるし」だと言いました。飼葉桶に布でくるまれた幼子の何が私達に与えられる「しるし」なのでしょうか。
実はこの「布にくるまる」という言葉ですが、この言葉がイエスと関係してもう一度、新約聖書の中に出てくることをご存知でしょうか。そのもう一つの言葉を使った人もこのルカでした。ルカ２３章５３節にはこう記されています。「それを取り下ろして亜麻布に包み、まだ誰も葬ったことのない、岩を掘って造った墓に納めた」。
この言葉が何を意味しているかお分かりかと思います。そうです、後に成人となったイエス・キリストは十字架につけられ死なれた。そして、それを取り下ろして、彼が生まれたばかりの時に布にくるまれて飼い葉桶に寝かされたように、亜麻布に包まれたのです。
さらに当時の慣習というものを調べていきます時に分かってきますことは、この家畜小屋というものの多くは、町のはずれの洞窟のようなところであったと言われているということです。クリスマスのポストカードの多くはこの小屋を木で造られた建物として描いていますが、考えてみれば自分の住む家を建てることさえ難儀する時代の貧しい庶民が、わざわざ家畜のために家を建てるということは稀で、彼らの多くは自然のほら穴に細工をして家畜を飼っていたというのです。ですから、この時イエスが寝かされていた場所というのもほら穴のような場所ではなかったかと言われています。そして、そのことを思う時に、私たちは再び先ほどのルカ２３章の記録を思い起こすのです。「それを取り下ろして亜麻布に包み、まだ誰も葬ったことのない、岩を掘って造った墓に納めた」と。
さらにこの時に東の国の博士達が、飼い葉おけに寝かされている乳飲み子イエスの元に何を携えてこられたかということを思い起こしましょう。彼らは黄金、乳香、没薬をイエス様に捧げたとマタイは書き記しました。このうちの没薬とは人が死ぬ時に体に塗るものです。この時から３３年後に、葬られたイエスのところに女性達は何を持ってやってきましたか？ルカはこのように記しています「週の初めの日、夜明け前に、女たちは用意しておいた香料を携えて、墓に行った」（ルカ２４章１節）。この香料は没薬のことです。
イエスが誕生した時に「布に包まれた」ということ、「洞窟で生まれた」ということ、「没薬が送られた」ということ、それは何のしるしなのでしょうか。そうです、キリストは生まれた時から既に私達の罪のために十字架にかかって死なれるということを身に負うていたということです。御使いは、そのしるしについて語っていたのです。
アドベントに入り、私達はクリスマスのメッセージに目を留めています。ここにいたる前は人間の失敗についてみてまいりました。創世記が最初の１１章で既に人類が三つのテストに失敗したということ、すなわちエデンの園、ノアの洪水、バベルの塔において人間はその赤裸々な姿を明らかにしたということを、そしてその様は以後、今も全く変わらず、これからもとんでもないことをし続けていくというのが聖書が言うことなのです。
これら人間が引き起こす問題の根源には我々一人一人が持っている罪の問題があり、またそんな私達は必ず死ななければならないという宿命を負っています。私達はその無常さに打ちひしがれ、ある者はその死を恐れつつ、生きています。
このような人間世界のただ中にイエス・キリストは来られ、その人間が抱える現実を全て経験され、我々の罪の身代わりとなって十字架の上で殺され、そして我々が抱く恐れの中心にある死を打ち破り、復活されたと聖書は記しています。すなわち、これからそのようなことを成し遂げるこの幼子が私達のためにお生まれになったということが、神が私達に与えておられるしるしなのだと御使いは言ったのです。それはある時代のある民族にだけに与えられたものではなく、それは全ての民に与えられるものなのだ、それは大きな大きな喜びなのだと御使いは言ったのです。
神は人の歴史の中、人間の汗と涙で満ちたこの世界の只中にある飼葉桶に寝かされている幼子の上に御自身の御心を示されたのです。私達の目に浮かべることができる、理解できるその日常の出来事のただ中に神様がしるしを示されたのです。それは「この世の出来事」と「神の御心」、すなわち「この世の苦しみ」と「神の愛」が一つとなった時のことであり、それがイエス・キリストの誕生だったということです。
そして、ここまでのことを思いめぐらしますのなら、この地と天の間に立ちうるお方はお一人しかいないということが分かります。『神は唯一であり、神と人との間の仲保者もただひとりであって、それは人なるキリスト・イエスである』（テモテ第一の手紙２章５節）。そうです、この世界にもし神と人との仲保者となりうるお方がいるとしたら、神の子でありながら、人の子として馬小屋に生まれ、我々と同じところを通り、我々のために十字架にかかり、我々のために復活された主イエス・キリスト以外にいないのです。そして、その誕生にも、十字架にも、復活にも、私達に対する神の愛が満ち溢れているのです。このことゆえに私達は「Joy to the world」、「喜びがこの世界にもたらせられた」と歌うのです。
『この大祭司は、わたしたちの弱さに同情できない方ではなく、罪を犯されなかったが、あらゆる点において、わたしたちと同様に試練に遭われたのです。 だから、憐れみを受け、恵みにあずかって、時宜にかなった助けをいただくために、大胆に恵みの座に近づこうではないか』 （へブル４章１５節－１６節）。
このことゆえに我々はこのクリスマスを喜びましょう。そして２０１６年のクリスマス、このキリストの愛をあなたもいただきませんか。お祈りしましょう。お祈りしましょう。

Christmas is coming. All around the world, preachers are preaching the message of Christmas. How many times will the song “Joy to the World” be sung this week until Christmas. Christian or non-christian, we all know this song. We can hear this song playing in the background at supermarkets and even at PACHINKO parlors in Japan.
I would like to preach about why it is sung “Joy to the world”. Yes, I want you to know the meaning of Joy to the world. First of all, I would like to remind you that this of a historical event.
Historical Event
Let us read Luke 2:1-7 of this event.
2 In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2 (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3 And everyone went to their own town to register.
The Bible passage I just read was written by Luke. He was a doctor. What is the first thing doctors do when they meet a patient? Yes, they will make sure that they are facing the parson and, will open up their medical record to write the date. When we sign important documents, we also sign the date. If we fail to write the date, the document may even become invalid. By writing the date, we justify that this was a legitimate affair. The action of signing the date sets this event as a real occurrence in history.
Maybe because of his occupation, Luke was careful about the time of the incident. He did not write the date, but instead, he wrote the name of historically significant leaders such as Caesar and the governor as a place marker of time. These names are those that have clearly been recorded in other historical documents, making it clear that this was a real occurrence of history. The story of Christmas is not a fairy tale. Luke emphasized the authenticity of this story. Let us look the second point, which is an incident that happened in the life of the people. Let us read from verse Luke 2:3-7.
Event of human life
3 And everyone went to their own town to register.4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.
Here it is written of the story of Jesus’ father Joseph and mother Mary traveling to Bethlehem by the decree of Caesar Augusts to register for the census. As I said, Luke was a doctor, so it was his job to face the sick. He probably asked his patients many questions. “Are you in pain?” “I have backache.” “How did it happen?” “Because of this economy, our taxes have increased, forcing me to work everyday from morning to late at night. It must be the result of such strain.” Such conversations would have made Luke very receptive to patient life styles to treat their problems.
Therefore Luke made clear the time of the incident and then he mentioned the social occurrences of that time, noting the decree of Augustus Caesar. His decree could not be disobeyed and thus the order was delivered to all territories under his power. The reason for this registration was to properly tax the people and to know the number of men that could be drafted as soldiers.
As we know, an ordinary carpenter like Joseph had no say to the decree of Caesar Augustus. Joseph had to stop his work as carpenter to go to Bethlehem. It took three days to travel on foot. For us, this would be like walking from here to the Japanese Consulate in downtown LA.
Not only did Joseph have to stop working, he had to take his pregnant wife with him to Bethlehem. It would have been a tough journey for pregnant woman. No one walks all the way to LA with a pregnant wife on a donkey, but that was the decree of Caesar. They have to obey it.
Dear brothers and sisters, we also face similar situations in our daily lives. I have experienced it. I used to always look at the US immigration website to check their policy because they would change quiet often. Time and effort put into certain preparations could suddenly go to waste because of a change.
When we were applying for our Green Card, our youngest was still an infant and the other two still little. We all went to the immigration office in Chula Vista many times.
Some of you might know the situation. There was a security screening and a guard was always there with a gun. We were prohibited from eating there and I could feel the tense atmosphere under their authority. But children do not understand anything about authority. When they became hungry and they cried, but the guard was still strictly watching us. So my wife went to the restroom with snacks and our children ate the snacks in the restroom.
We were in the position of receiving visas so we need to obey whatever it was they asked of us. We still had it better compared to those from other countries. There are so many people who are suffering under the unreasonable decrees made by their country.
This country does not have an almighty Emperor with absolute authority. But how about the rise and fall of stock s on the stock market or a lay off from a company. It could suddenly happen tomorrow, much like the decree of Augustus. Our lives will be swayed by them. We may have to move because of a natural disaster, or the order of a company. This is just like “The Decree of Augustus”. There is a strong wind blowing on us in spite of our wish and willingness.
Luke recorded the date, and he also wrote of the reality of Joseph’s life, which he could not manage by himself, and of how Jesus was born in the midst of an uncontrollable situation. Jesus went to Bethlehem in the shaking womb of Mary on the donkey, and even after their arrival, there was no room for him to stay. He was born among the cows and horses and lay in a manger. Is there anything more realistic than this of human life?
However there is God’s plan in such situations of human reality. What is His plan? Yes, it is a plan designed for us. Hebrew 4:14-16 explains this plan.
Hebrew 4:14-16 said; 14 therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. 16 Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
Afterwards, the young couple ran away to Egypt with baby Jesus. Yes they were much like refugees. They returned to Israel and lived in Nazareth of Galilee. Joseph passed away at an early age and Jesus had to support his family as the eldest son by working as a carpenter. There were no Construction Companies during those times, so he must have worked like a handyman. Jesus told many parables and he often used budgets, wages, and interest as a part of these parables. These all came from his personal experiences.
We know Jesus did not encounter credit card fraud, nor did he experience bankruptcy or car theft. However what he experienced every day was very much just like what we face today.
In such a way, Jesus had experienced the same things we do in every way, just as we are today. Our heavenly father and Jesus both agreed and accepted this.
Have you ever shed tears? Christ has also shed tears. Have you ever been betrayed? Christ was betrayed, too. Have you been hungry and thirsty? Christ has been hungry and thirsty… Have you ever been treated unjustly? Christ was also treated unjustly. Have you ever suffered from a pain? Christ was suffered his pain. Have you ever been agonized? Christ was also agonized. Have you lost a beloved person? Christ also lost his loved ones. Have you ever been refused? Christ was refused, too.
The reason why Jesus Christ was born as a child of Mary was to experience not just one aspect of life but to experience all the matters we face each day. Let us move on to our third point which is “the event of heaven”.
The heavenly Event
So far, we have looked at the recorded “date” or historical context and the incidences we experience in our daily lives. These are easy to understand for us. However, parallel to this, we notice that what is called the revelation of heaven is recorded in the Bible. Yes, an angel appeared before the shepherds and said to them,
10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
The Bible says that the message was delivered by an angel. This is clearly distinguished from our daily lives, and we may view such event as some sort of fairy tale. Why did Luke, who was a doctor, write such event beyond our understanding along with logical facts and observational social backgrounds. Why? There is only one answer for that. It is because the event actually happened.
We are not reading a novel that Luke has written. Like the Bible states, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” in the very beginning of this book, this is a book written about God who is beyond our knowledge and understanding. If we understand everything in the Bible, it is not a book about God. The birth of Jesus Christ is an event marked in our history, and it records his life as a human being, but it is also written along side heavenly matters.
The angel said “You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger”. The angel emphasized the baby wrapped in cloths and said “This will be a sign to you”. What kind of sign was this baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger?
In fact, the words “to be wrapped in cloth” appears again in the Bible in relation with Jesus. It was also written by Luke. He wrote in Luke 23:53; 53 Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen cloth and placed it in a tomb cut in the rock, one in which no one had yet been laid.
I believe you know what Luke is talking about. Yes, Jesus Christ became an adult and was crucified, died, and his body was taken down from the cross and wrapped in linen just like he was wrapped in the manger.
Furthermore, when we look into the traditions from those times, their barn is not like the wood houses we see on Christmas postcards, but they were more like caves. Most people were poor at the time and did not have the means to build one entirely from wood, so it was not uncommon for caves to be modified and used as barns. Therefore, Jesus was likely laid down in the manger in the cave. And we recall what is recorded of in Luke 23:53; “Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen cloth and placed it in a tomb cut in the rock”.
Furthermore, let us remember what the wise men brought to Jesus from the east country. The book of Matthew said, they brought gold, frankincense and myrrh (Matthew 2:11). The myrrh was used for dead bodies in that time… Again do you remember after 33 years from this time, a couple of women came to the cave where the body of Jesus was placed? They have something in their hand. What was it that they carried? “On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb” (Luke 24:1). The spices were myrrh.
What is the “sign” shown by being “wrapped in cloth”, “born in the cave” and “myrrh was sent”? Yes, it was the sign of Jesus’ crucifixion for our sins and also his resurrection from death. Angels delivered the message of this sign.
We are focusing our attention to the message of Christmas during this advent season. We have been examining the failure of man before prior. I mentioned that humans had already failed three times, at the Garden of Eden, the flood of Noah and the tower of Babel. These events happened between Genesis chapter 1- 11. This is how we are as humans and we have not changed since then. We have continued to do many unacceptable things.
The problems we have are a result of our own sins, and because of this fact, we will die. We are overwhelmed by emptiness and we live with the fear of death.
Jesus Christ came into such a world, experienced all that we are experiencing, sacrificed himself for us, and died on the cross. He broke our fear of death, and as written in the Bible, he was resurrected from death. The angels said, this is the sign given of that baby who accomplished all of these things. This is not given only to certain people in certain times but God gave this sign to all people, like you and me, and this is truly a great joy to us.
God presented His plans through the baby lying in the manger, in the midst of this world filled with tears and sweat. This happened in the same place we know and understand as a human being. This was the time when “an event of the world” and “the heart of God” or in other words, “the pain of the world” and “the love of God” became one. That is the birth of Jesus Christ.
Looking back on these things, we now know, there is only one man who can stand between this world we live in and heaven.
5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all people.
Yes, if there is a mediator between God and us humans, this man is the son of God, he was born in a cave, lived just like us, died on the cross, and was resurrected from death. This man is Jesus Christ. The cross and the empty tomb is full of love for us. That is why we sing the words, “joy to the world”.
15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. 16 Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
Because of this promise, let us rejoice in Christmas, and let us receive His love this Christmas. Let us pray.
