主にある兄弟姉妹、おたずねしたいのです。あなたの前にイエス・キリストは歩んでいますか。「あなたはわたしに従ってきなさい」という御声を聞きつつ、その後に従っていますか。それとも、既にイエス様を追い越して自分の思うままに、願うままに先を進んでいますか。私達の心の視力はとても弱いのですから、その歩みがいかなるものであるかは容易に想像できますね。緑の牧場、憩の水際に伴われるには一つの条件があるのです。そう、それは羊飼いなるイエス様が私達の先頭を歩んでくださることであり、私達がなすべきこともただ一つ、そのイエスの言葉に聞き従うことなのです。

あなたの前には誰がいますか。

２０１４年の６月から、ヨハネによる福音書からお話してまいりました「キリストを知る」という礼拝メッセージのシリーズも今日で終わりとなります。来週からは私達の年間標語にそくしたメッセージとして「さいわいな時も 試みの時も」を取り次がせていただきたく願っております。
イエス・キリストは聖書の中で「わたしに従ってきなさい」、もしくは「わたしについてきなさい」という言葉を１６回、言っています。そのうちの１２回は弟子達に対する言葉で、今日、見てまいりますイエス様の１２弟子の一人であったペテロに対してもイエス様はこの言葉を語りかけています。今日はその二つの言葉について見ていきたく願っております。
まずペテロはこのイエス様の言葉によって、イエス様の弟子となったということを確認したいと思います。そう、それはイエス様が宣教を始められた時のことでした。
16さて、イエスはガリラヤの海べを歩いて行かれ、シモンとシモンの兄弟アンデレとが、海で網を打っているのをごらんになった。彼らは漁師であった。17イエスは彼らに言われた、「わたしについてきなさい。あなたがたを、人間をとる漁師にしてあげよう」。18すると、彼らはすぐに網を捨てて、イエスに従った。19また少し進んで行かれると、ゼベダイの子ヤコブとその兄弟ヨハネとが、舟の中で網を繕っているのをごらんになった。20そこで、すぐ彼らをお招きになると、父ゼベダイを雇人たちと一緒に舟において、イエスのあとについて行った。（マルコ１章１６節―２０節）
ここで記されているシモンとはペテロのことを指します。もともとガリラ湖の漁師をしていた彼はその兄弟アンデレと網を打っていました。その彼らに向かいイエス様は「わたしについてきなさい。あなたがたを人間をとる漁師にしてあげよう」と声をかけたのです。そして、彼らはその言葉を聞くと、すぐに網を捨ててイエス様に従ったのです。その後に１２弟子の一人であるヤコブとその兄弟ヨハネも同じようにしてイエス様に従っていきました。見過ごしそうになりますが、２０節は彼らが「イエスの後について行った」と書いています。
この言葉に「従う」ということの本来の意味があります。そうです、今日、このことを私達は心に留めましょう。「従う」ということはすなわち「後についていく」ということです。すなわち、イエス様はいつも私達の前方を行かれ、私達はその後をついていくのです。
ご存知のように聖書はイエス・キリストを羊飼い、私達を羊に譬えてメッセージを語っています。当時の人々にとりまして羊飼いと羊の姿というのは日常でしたので、彼らは容易にその譬えを理解することができました。イスラエルの放牧とは見渡す限り草におおわれた土地でなされたものではなくて、見渡す限りごつごつとした茶色の岩がむき出しになった不毛の地で羊のために必要な食物と水を見出ださなければならないものです。そして、そのことは羊には不可能なことであり、その責任を負っているのが羊飼いであったのです。ですからイエス様はこう言われたのです。
『彼は羊の先頭に立っていく。羊はその声を知っているので、彼について行くのである』（ヨハネ１０章４節）
そう、羊飼いなるイエス・キリストは私達の先頭を歩かれるのです。そして、私達はその後について行くのです。しかし、この関係が確立するためには羊の側にも責任がともないます。言うまでもない、羊の責任とは羊飼いの後に従っていくことなのです。この羊飼いを追い越して、その先に行ってしまったり、その後をついていくことを止め、道をそれたりしないという責任です。そして、もしこの責任を全うできないのなら、私達はいつでも危機に直面する可能性が私達にはあるのです。主にある兄弟姉妹、今、私達の前をイエス・キリストが歩いていますか。もし、あなたがイエス様より先を歩いているのなら、あるいは辺りを見回してもどこにもイエス様の姿を見出だすことができないのなら、このことを先延ばしにせずに、今、私達があるべき場所に戻りませんか。
この羊飼いと羊の関係についてイエス様ご自身がこのようなことを語っています。
27わたしの羊はわたしの声に聞き従う。わたしは彼らを知っており、彼らはわたしについて来る（ヨハネ１０章２７節）。さらに先に読みました言葉もこう言っています。『彼は羊の先頭に立っていく。羊はその声を知っているので、彼について行くのである』（ヨハネ１０章４節）
皆さん、これらの言葉にはイエス・キリストに従っていくということ、イエス・キリストの後についていくことは具体的にどのようなことなのかということが明確に書かれています。そうです、イエスに従うこと、イエスについていくということは、彼の声を知り、彼の声に聴き従うということです。
私達が聖書の中にあるこの羊について語る時に、度々、申し上げますでしょう。
羊は極度に目が悪い動物なんだということを。羊は近くのものしか見えないそうです。ですから、直ぐ目の前を歩く者の後をついていくのであり、それを見失ったら簡単に迷ってしまいます。このことは、なんと人間の本質を言い表していることでしょうか。目が見えないということは、目の前の出来事に対して正しい対応ができないということです。向き合っている事の本質を見極めるなんてこと、私達にはできないのです。楽ちん、楽ちんと言いながら小走りして、その先にある崖を見ることができないのが私達なのです。そのように私達の目は頼りのないものなのだから、それには頼らず、私の御声を聞きなさいとイエス様は言われるのです。イエス様は「私を見失うな」とは言っていないのです。「私の言葉に耳を傾けなさい」と言うのです。
主にある皆さん、羊飼いの後についていくことは、羊にとって極めて重要なことです。羊飼いの声を聞いてもその後をついていかない羊は、羊飼いが備える豊かな恵みを楽しむことができません。また群れから離れた羊は、野生動物の犠牲となってしまうことでしょう。まさしく、私達が住むこの世界もジャングルのような場所でしょう。そのような世界で、もし皆さんが自分では決して見出すことのできない緑の牧場、憩の水際に導かれたいのなら、イエス様の御言葉に聞くことです。
お忙しいでしょう。時間があるのなら、少しでも仕事や家事を済ませておきたいと思われるでしょう。しかし、家事にしても、お仕事にしても主の言葉を聞かずに自分の思いと憶測だけで進めているのなら、時に頓挫してしまったり、行き詰ってしまいますでしょう。後でかえって時間をかけて修復しなければならないというようなことも起きてきますでしょう。まさしく「急がば回れ」と言う言葉は至言で、別の言い方をしますのなら「急がば主イエスに聴け」ということを心からお勧めしたいのです。
主にある兄弟姉妹、もう一度、申し上げます。羊飼いの後についていく羊だけが、羊飼いが備えて下さっている良いものにあずかることできるのです。そして、後について従うためには、耳を羊飼いの声の周波数に合わせなければなりません。羊飼いが動くとき、その声に注意を払う者たちは、主の守りの中におり、また豊かに養われるのです。
ここでペテロに登場していただきましょう。彼は私達に知恵と悟りを与えてくれます。彼はイエスに従うべき者であるべきでしたのに、その御声を聞かずに従うべきお方を追い越してしまいました。その時にどのようなことが起きたのでしょう。
かつてイエス様はご自身が十字架におかかりになる前にそのことが起こるということを予め、弟子達に語られました。30するとイエスは、自分のことをだれにも言ってはいけないと、彼らを戒められた。31それから、人の子は必ず多くの苦しみを受け、長老、祭司長、律法学者たちに捨てられ、また殺され、そして三日の後によみがえるべきことを、彼らに教えはじめ、32しかもあからさまにこの事を話された（マルコ８章３０節ー３２節）とある通りです。
イエス様はこれからご自身がどのような道を歩むのかを知っておられ、それを弟子達に語りました。しかし、それに対して『ペテロはイエスをわきへ引き寄せて、いさめはじめた』（マルコ８章３２節）のです。そのことを聞いた『イエスは振り返って、弟子たちを見ながら、ペテロをしかって言われた、「サタンよ、引きさがれ。あなたは神のことを思わないで、人のことを思っている」』（マルコ８章３３節）
イエス様は言われたのです「あなたは神のことを思わないで、人のことを思っている」。そうです、ペテロはその時、イエス様の言葉に聞かず、自らの解釈を主張し、イエス様を追い越してその前を行こうとしていたのです。
また十字架を直前にしてイエス様に『今夜、あなたがたは皆わたしにつまずくであろう』(マタイ２６章３１節)と言われたペテロはすかさず答えます。『たとい、みんなの者があなたにつまずいても、わたしは決してつまずきません』(３３)。そして、その後にこの言葉に反するかのようにペテロは「イエス様など知らない」と三度も言ったのです。そうです、ペテロはその時、イエス様の言葉に聞かず、自分の内にある可能性について主張することにより、イエス様を追い越して、その前を行こうとしたのです。
このように彼はイエスを追い越し、イエスを見失い、これらの失敗をしました。本来ならペテロの前には常にイエス様がおり、彼はそのみ姿の後についていくべきだったのです。主にある兄弟姉妹、私達はこのペテロの失敗から何かを学ばなければなりません。
最近、週日のバイブルスタディーをしていて実感していることがあります。私はあのバイブルスタディーをスポーツで言うところのハーフタイムだといつも言っています。そう、サッカーのゲームには前半と後半があり、前半がありますと選手と監督は一度、ロッカールームに戻り、戦術を組み直すのです。そこでは前半でうまく機能しなかったこと、改善すべきこと、後半に注意するべきことを確認し合うのです。
私もかつてサッカーをしていたので、このハーフタイムのロッカールームで話し合われていることが分かります。そうです、私達はこんなことを確認し合っているのです。「お前は俺を見て、前方にボールを蹴ってくれ」。「なんで、お前は俺より先に前に出るんだ。俺の後方にいてしっかりとバックアップしてくれ」。
同じように私達の水曜、木曜集会はその週の真ん中にあります。週の前半に直面した家族内でのこと、仕事で直面していること、それを心に治めて、八尋ホール、一斉ホールというロッカールームに集まるのです。そして週の後半に向かい、私達は私達の監督者なる主イエス・キリストの御声に聴き従い、指針を得、また修正点に耳を傾けるのです。「火曜日のあなたは私より先を歩いていなかったか」と。「今日のあなたは私から離れて横道にそれていなかったか。その時に私の声を聞いていたのか」と。自分はイエス様より前に抜き出て、物事を見、物事を考え、物事を決めていないかっただろうか。
ここ数か月、水曜集会ではルツ記、木曜集会ではダニエル書を紐解いていますが、「あぁ、このことを聞いていたなら、免れる問題はなんと日常の中に多くあるのだろう」ということを実感しているのです。ダニエル書にはバビロン帝国の王であったネブカデネザルの姿が記されていますから、その彼に関わる神様のはたらきかけと、彼の反面教師的な心から私達はとてつもない天来の知恵を得ています。そこから主の言葉を聞くことにより、私達は自らの命を救うことがあるというようなことが起こりうるのです。
主にある皆さん、私達もあの日、あの時、イエス様に従っていこうという決意をもって、クリスチャンになったのだと思います。イエス様に従っていく道こそが自分の人生にとって一番、大切な道だということを私達は知っています。そうであるのなら、私達はもっと主の言葉に耳を傾けましょう。教会の集会には来れない方達もたくさんいると思います。そうであるのなら、どうか日毎に個人的に聖書の言葉に聞いてください。
今朝、確認したいのです。私達の前方にはイエス様が確かにおり、私達はそのイエス様の御声を聞いていますか。その御声を聞き分けていますか。二週前にイエス様がトマスに言われたように「あなたは見たので信じたのか。見ないで信じる者はさいわいである」という言葉が何を意味しているのでしょうか、それは「あなたは見て、私の後についてくるのではなくて、私の言葉を聴くことにより私についてくるのだ」ということです。そして、その意味とは私達が聖書の言葉に聞き従うということなのです。
ペテロの生涯においてイエス様はもう一度、「わたしに従ってきなさい」と語りかけました。時はイエス様が十字架にかかり、死んで復活され、ガリラヤ湖畔でペテロに出会われた時です。その時とはペテロがイエス様を三度、知らないと否定した後のこと、その場でイエス様は彼を咎めることなく、私を愛するかと三度聞かれ、再びペテロを再献身へと導かれたのです。そして、その後にこう言いました。
18よくよくあなたに言っておく。あなたが若かった時には、自分で帯をしめて、思いのままに歩きまわっていた。しかし年をとってからは、自分の手をのばすことになろう。そして、ほかの人があなたに帯を結びつけ、行きたくない所へ連れて行くであろう」。19これは、ペテロがどんな死に方で、神の栄光をあらわすかを示すために、お話しになったのである。こう話してから、「わたしに従ってきなさい」と言われた。20ペテロはふり返ると、イエスの愛しておられた弟子がついて来るのを見た。この弟子は、あの夕食のときイエスの胸近くに寄りかかって、「主よ、あなたを裏切る者は、だれなのですか」と尋ねた人である。21ペテロはこの弟子を見て、イエスに言った、「主よ、この人はどうなのですか」。22イエスは彼に言われた、「たとい、わたしの来る時まで彼が生き残っていることを、わたしが望んだとしても、あなたにはなんの係わりがあるか。あなたは、わたしに従ってきなさい」。（ヨハネ２１章１８節‐２２節）
ペテロはある意味、この場面で見失っていたイエス様をまた自分自身の前に据えたのです。そうです、これまでは自分の好きなように生きてきた、すなわち時にイエス様の先を行き、時にイエス様から離れて好きなように生きて来た。しかし、これからはイエス様のために誰かがあなたを縛り、あなたが願わないところに連れて行かれるだろうと。そのような時であっても私の後についてきなさいとイエス様はここで言われたのです。しかし、その言葉を聞いておりながらも、その側にイエスの愛しておられた弟子を見（これはヨハネだと言われていますが）、彼のことが気になり、ペテロは言うのです。「主よ、この人はどうなのですか」。
イエス様は彼に答えます。「たとい、わたしの来る時まで彼が生き残っていることを、わたしが望んだとしても、あなたにはなんの係わりがあるか。あなたは、わたしに従ってきなさい」。（ヨハネ２１章２２節）
ペテロは痛い経験をして、主のあわれみにより、その後に再びついていくということを確認してしておきながら、すぐに自分とイエス様との間に仲間の姿を見たのです。しかし、イエス様は言われたのです。「あなたは私に従ってきなさい」。
ペテロはとことん私達に教訓を与えてくれる愛すべき人です。この言葉に私達は教えられるのです。そうです、私達がイエス様に聞き従っていく時には色々な雑音が入るのです。その雑音がイエス様の声を聞こえなくしてしまうのだということを私達はこのペテロから学ぶのです。
クリスチャンになる前に私達はこの世の声をいつも聞いていたのです。そして、それらを取捨選択して生きていたのです。しかし、今や私達はイエスの御声に聞こうとしているのです。しかし、変わらずに私達には別の声が聞こえてくるのです。その声によりイエス様の言葉がかき消されてしまうことを私達は知らなければなりません。思えば私達が揺れ動く時、思い煩う時、その時とはこの声がイエス様の声をかき消している時なのです。
ペテロはその時「この人はどうなのだろうか」と自らに問いかけました。その声は明らかにイエス様の御声ではありませんでした。ある意味、この声は私達が世からいつも聞く、代表的な声であり、ペテロは私達に代わってここでそれを言っているのです。「そう、あの人は、この人は、それに対して自分は・・・」。その時、イエス様の言葉がかき消されそうとしていました。しかしイエス様は短く、しかし確信に満ちて、ペテロをもう一度、あるべき場所に連れ戻します「あなたはわたしに従ってきなさい」と。
主にある兄弟姉妹、今朝、お訪ねしたいのです。あなたの前にイエス・キリストは歩んでいますか。「あなたはわたしに従ってきなさい」という御声を聞きつつ、その後に従っていますか。それとも、既にイエス様を追い越して自分の思うままに、願うままに先を進んでいますか。私達の視力はとても弱いのですから、その歩みがいかなるものであるかは容易に想像できますね。緑の牧場、憩の水際に伴われるには一つの条件があるのです。そう、それは羊飼いなるイエス様が私達の先頭を歩んでくださることであり、私達がなすべきこともただ一つ、そのイエスの言葉に聞き従うことなのです。

Who is walking in front of you?

Our study series on the Gospel According to John, that was started in June of 2014, come to an end today. We will start a new series next week based on our annual motto: “In time of happiness and in time of hardship.”
In the Bible, Jesus Christ said “follow me” or “follow my way” 16 times in total. In 12 of these 16 times, Jesus was talking to his disciples. Today, we will study words Jesus spoke to Peter, one of his twelve disciples. We would like to study two such occasions.
First of all, we must remember that Peter became his disciple when he heard Jesus speak to him personally. This took place at an early stage of the ministry of Jesus.
16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.17 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 18 At once they left their nets and followed him. 19 When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. 20 Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him. (Mark 1:16-20)
Here, Simon is the same person as Peter. Peter was a fisherman on the Sea of Galilee. He and his brother Andrew were casting nets. To them, Jesus called out saying “Come, follow me, and I will send you out to fish for people.” When they heard Jesus, they left their nets immediately and followed Jesus. Later, James and his brother John also became disciples of Jesus in a similar manner. You might have noted that Verse 20 says that they “followed [Jesus].”
The word “follow” is very important and I would like to elaborate on its meaning today. To follow means that we follow after someone. In other words, Jesus would be walking in front of us and we would be following him.
As you know well, the Bible talks often about Jesus as our shepherd and us as his sheep. Since the sight of shepherd and sheep were common during Jesus’ time, people understood this metaphor readily. In Israel, the sheep were raised not on an open field of green pasture but were raised on a barren, rocky patch. Shepherd was responsible to find food and water for the sheep. Sheep could not find food themselves. It was on the shoulders of the shepherd to feed the sheep. That is why Jesus said this way:
”[The shepherd] goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.” (John 10:4)
Yes, Jesus Christ our shepherd goes ahead of us, and we follow him. For this relationship to work, sheep have to play their part. Namely, sheep have responsibility to follow the shepherd. Sheep should not go ahead of the shepherd, nor should they stop following him and go astray. If we do not fulfill our responsibility to follow him, we would get into trouble too easily. Brothers and sisters in Christ, is Jesus Christ walking ahead of you? If you are treading ahead of Jesus, or if you have lost sight of Jesus, you should take immediate action to go back to Jesus.
Regarding the relationship between the shepherd and sheep, Jesus said: “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” (John 10:27) And as I have mentioned before, Jesus also said about the shepherd: ”He goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.” (John 10:4)
These words tell us clearly what it means to follow Jesus Christ and to follow the footsteps of Jesus. It means to know and recognize the voice of Jesus and to follow his words.
Whenever we talk about sheep in the Bible, I have pointed out many times that sheep have very poor eye sight. Sheep are near-sighted. That is why they can follow only when the shepherd is close to them. When they lose sight of the shepherd they get lost. The same can be said about the nature of us human being. We too have poor eye sight; we cannot deal with things happening in front of our eyes. We cannot understand the true meaning of things happening around us. We believe everything is alright and tread on without realizing that there is a cliff just ahead of us. Our ability to see is questionable. Jesus tells us not to trust our eyes too much and instead listen to the voice of Jesus. Jesus is not saying don’t lose sight of him. He tells us to listen to his voice.
To the sheep, it is very important to follow the shepherd. If the sheep fails to follow the voice of the shepherd, they cannot enjoy the rich blessing the shepherd can provide them. If any sheep is lost, it could be attacked by wild animals. The world we live in is like a jungle. If we want to be lead to the green pasture and fresh water in this world, we must listen to the words of Jesus Christ.
We are all busy. If we find time, we want to use it to catch up with work and household chores. But, if we are too busy to listen to the Lord Jesus and rely on our own thoughts, even our household chores and works could go wrong and cause us to stumble. We might have to spend time, a lot of time, later to restore the situations. People tell us that “slow and steady” is a wise way to go. Perhaps what we need is to “stop and listen”, listen to the words of Jesus.
Let me stress this point again. Only those sheep that follow the shepherd can enjoy the good life the shepherd provides. And, in order to follow the shepherd, the sheep must tune in to the voice of the shepherd. The shepherd leads the way; those who pay close attention to his voice will enjoy his protection and blessing.
Let us go back to Peter. His experience can provide us with wisdom and insight. Peter was supposed to be following Jesus. But, at one time, he did not listen to his voice and started walking ahead of Jesus. Let us see what happened then.
Jesus had told his disciples that he would be killed on the cross soon. Here is an account of that scene. 30 Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him. 31 He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. 32 He spoke plainly about this. (Mark 8:30-32)
Since Jesus knew what was going to happen to him soon, Jesus tried to convey that to the disciples. But upon hearing this, Peter took Jesus aside and started to rebuke him. (Mark 8:32) 33 But … Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, [and] he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!” he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”
Jesus said: “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.” Yes, at that moment, Peter ignored the words of Jesus. Rather than following Jesus, Peter was trying to walk in front of Jesus.
In the night before the cross, when Jesus told the disciples: “This very night you will all fall away on account of me” (Matthew 26:31), Peter answered back forcefully, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.” (Matthew 26:33) We know, however, that Peter would deny knowing Jesus later, not once but three times. Peter did not listen to Jesus at that time, either. Peter was preoccupied with his own concern. He was trying to walk in front of Jesus.
In these moments, Peter tried to take over Jesus, lost sight of Jesus, and ended up failing miserably. Peter should have kept Jesus in front of him, and Peter was supposed to follow Jesus. Brothers and sisters in Christ, we must learn from the mistakes of Peter.
During the week, we hold weekly bible study get-together. I look at these studies in this way. I feel that the Bible study is like a half time in sport events. In soccer games, there is a first half and a second half. After the first half, the players and the manager go back to the locker room to go over the strategy. There, they review the first half and discuss what must be improved and how to play the second half.
I used to play soccer myself. So, I know what is discussed in the locker room at the half time. The players talk to each other at that time. One might say: “watch where I am and pass me the ball.” Other might say: “Don’t go too far in front, make sure to stay back and take care of defense.”
Our Bible studies are held on Wednesday and Thursday, in the middle of a week.
When we gather at the Yahiro Hall or at the Issei Hall, we are gathering at our locker room. Our minds are still fresh from what we experienced at home and work during the first half of the week. And, we prepare for the second half of the week by listening to the voice of Jesus, receiving guidance, and adjusting our course of action for the second half. We look back and ask if we were not walking ahead of Jesus on Tuesday. Or, whether or not we took wrong steps today and whether or not we failed to listen to the voice of Jesus. We review our own experience and ask if we were observing and contemplating things on our own, walking in front of Jesus instead of following him.
We have been studying the book of Ruth in Wednesday meeting and the book of Daniel in Thursday sessions. We are often reminded anew that there are so much to learn from these books in the Bible. The book of Daniel talks about Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon. When we study the interaction between God and the rebellious king, we learn a lot. We learn that it is crucial that we listen to the voice of the Lord. We learn that our life literally depends on the way we follow him.
Many of us made up our mind to follow Jesus on that crucial day, and decided to choose to become a Christian. We should know that the most important thing for us in our life is to follow the way Jesus has shown us. If that is so, let us remember to pay closer attention to the words of Jesus. If we cannot find time to come to church meetings, let’s make efforts to listen to the words of the Bible at home.
We want to confirm this morning if we see Jesus walking ahead of us and if we are listening to his voice. Are we tuned in to his messages? Jesus said to Thomas: “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed”. Jesus was saying in effect that “You have seen me and followed me. Blessed are those who have not seen me but followed my voice.” He tells us that we should follow the words of the Bible.
In the life of Peter, there is a scene when Jesus talked to Peter one more time saying “Follow me.” It was after Jesus had died on the cross, resurrected, and met Peter on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. Rather than blaming Peter for having denied Jesus three times, Jesus asked Peter “Do you love me?” three times in order to bring Peter back to Jesus. Then, Jesus said:
18 Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.”19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me!” 20 Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is going to betray you?”) 21 When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?” 22 Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.” (John 21:18-22)
Peter had lost sight of Jesus. But, Peter found Jesus in front of him again. Peter had tried to walk his own way, trying to walk in front of Jesus and had lived the way he believed to be correct. But, Jesus told him that someone will bind him and lead him to where he does not want. But, Jesus told Peter to follow him even through those hard times. But, when Peter heard these words of Jesus, he saw other disciple Jesus loved (it could be John), and asked Jesus: “Lord, what about him?”
22 Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.” (John 21:22)
Peter had painful experience before. But, Jesus forgave him and was offering Peter a chance to follow him again. But, the sight of other disciple distracted his attention. Jesus, however, told Peter: “YOU must follow me.”
Peter is a loveable character. His experience gives us important lessons. We must learn from him. When we try to listen to Jesus, outside interference can draw our attention. Peter’s experience tells us that such outside interference could prevent us from listening to the voice of Jesus often.
Before we have come to know Jesus, we used to listen to the voices of this world. We tried to make sense out of those voices. But, now, we must listen to the voice of Jesus. But, our ears still catch other voices. We must be diligent. We must make sure that these other voices would not push out the voice of Jesus from us. When we find ourselves wavering, not knowing what to do, we often realize that outside noise is preventing us from listening to the voice of Jesus.
Peter wondered “What about him?” Peter was not listening to the voice of Jesus at that time. Such outside interference is typical in our life. Peter’s experience was representative of what we experience daily. What about him? What does the society say to me? These voices can drown out the voice of Jesus. But, the short message from Jesus was decisive and full of insight. He said “YOU must follow me.”
I would like to ask every one of you this morning. Do you see Jesus walking in front of you? Jesus is telling us: “YOU must follow me.” Are we following his voice? Or, have we taken over him, walking ahead of Jesus, trusting in our own thoughts? Our eye sights are poor. If we try to find our own way, we are bound to get lost. One condition must be met for us to reach the green pasture and fresh water. Let Jesus, our shepherd, walk in front of us all the time. And we must make sure that we follow him, listening to his voice.
