完ぺきな環境を有するエデンの園で問題が起きました。そうです、私達はここで教訓を得ます。そう「問題は最高の環境でも起こる」という教訓です。経済的に何の問題もない。食べるものは全て無農薬で最高品質、家にはスポーツジムがあり、最高の教育を受け、仕事も収入も安定している。しかし、それでも問題は起きます。環境を改善することはとても大切です。時に環境を変えることも大切です。そのことにより、問題が解決することもしばしばあります。しかし、環境が変われば全てがよくなるという保証はありません。問題というのは私達が行く先々にいつもあるものです。そうです、それではなぜどこに行っても問題があるのでしょうか・・・。

問題の原因をつきとめる

「ベン・ハー」という映画が上映されています。これは１９５９年にチヤールトン・ヘストン主演で上映され、アカデミー賞１１部門を獲得した映画のリメイクです。このようにオリジナル作品が大ヒットをしたゆえに今回のようなリメイクが作られることがあります。この「べン・ハー」については分かりませんが、多くの場合、リメイクがオリジナル以上に注目や評価を得ることは少ないように思えます。「最初に創作された原作」と「それを真似たもの」の違いです。
二月にイスラエルツアーに行きました。ヨーロッパの観光地を見てこられた方達が、言っておりました。「やはりイスラエルは別格だ」と。何が違うのでしょうか。ヨーロッパの文化、音楽、建築、芸術のほぼ全てにはキリスト教の影響があります。イスラエルはそのキリスト教発祥の地です。すなわち、その場所こそオリジナルのキリスト教がある場所です。これは「伝えらえたもの」と、「そこで生まれ、育まれたもの」の違いです。
人間について書き記されたものには色々あります。小説も映画もその中には登場人物がいます。その人達が何を考え、何を言い、どんな行動をするか、そのことが書かれているのが小説であり、映画です。しかし、この人間に関する記録のオリジナルは聖書にあります。特に今日、私達が注目する人はまさしくその人間の原型とも呼ぶべき人です。私達はこの人達から今日は大切な聖書の言葉を聞きたいと願っています。時は天地創造にまでさかのぼります。
「はじめに神は天と地を創造された」という言葉で始まる聖書は、神が六日をかけてこの世界を創られた様を描いています。二週間前に黒澤明監督の言葉を紹介しましたが、監督が言っていますように、私達人間が無から有を創造するのは不可能であり、私達の創造は、それまでに私達が見聞きしたことを土台としてなされます。しかし、この天地創造に関してはまさしく神が無から有を生みだしたということであり、その創造の冠として一番最後に神はアダムという人をつくり、そのアダムからエバという女性を創造されたと聖書は記録しています。言うなれば、彼らこそが我々全ての人間の初めであり、我々の原型であったということができます。
この二人が暮らしていた場所は神の備えたもうエデンの園という場所でありまして、その所で彼らは生きていくために必要なものが全て与えられていました。彼らは園の中央に置かれた一本の木からなる実以外は、そこにあるいかなる植物を食べてもいいという許しを神様から直々に得ていました。そんな日々を過ごしていた彼らにある日、こんなことが起こります。
1さて主なる神が造られた野の生き物のうちで、へびが最も狡猾であった。へびは女に言った、「園にあるどの木からも取って食べるなと、ほんとうに神が言われたのですか」。2女はへびに言った、「わたしたちは園の木の実を食べることは許されていますが、3ただ園の中央にある木の実については、これを取って食べるな、これに触れるな、死んではいけないからと、神は言われました」。4へびは女に言った、「あなたがたは決して死ぬことはないでしょう。5それを食べると、あなたがたの目が開け、神のように善悪を知る者となることを、神は知っておられるのです」。6女がその木を見ると、それは食べるに良く、目には美しく、賢くなるには好ましいと思われたから、その実を取って食べ、また共にいた夫にも与えたので、彼も食べた。7すると、ふたりの目が開け、自分たちの裸であることがわかったので、いちじくの葉をつづり合わせて、腰に巻いた。8彼らは、日の涼しい風の吹くころ、園の中に主なる神の歩まれる音を聞いた。そこで、人とその妻とは主なる神の顔を避けて、園の木の間に身を隠した。9主なる神は人に呼びかけて言われた、「あなたはどこにいるのか」。10彼は答えた、「園の中であなたの歩まれる音を聞き、わたしは裸だったので、恐れて身を隠したのです」。11神は言われた、「あなたが裸であるのを、だれが知らせたのか。食べるなと、命じておいた木から、あなたは取って食べたのか」。12人は答えた、「わたしと一緒にしてくださったあの女が、木から取ってくれたので、わたしは食べたのです」。13そこで主なる神は女に言われた、「あなたは、なんということをしたのです」。女は答えた、「へびがわたしをだましたのです。それでわたしは食べました」（創世記３章１節―１３節）。
言うまでもなくこれは創世記に記されている最初の人、アダムとエバがエデンの園にてサタンの誘惑を受けて、神様から食べてはならないと言われていた実を食べてしまう出来事です。このところから今日はいくつかのことを見ていきたいと思います。まず最初に「問題は最高の環境で起きた」ということです。
問題は最高の環境で起きた。
創世記を読んでいきますと常識では考えられないことに直面することがあります。その一つにその時代の人間は９１２年とか９０５年生きたというようなことが書かれているということです（創世記５章８節、１１節）。私達の常識で考えましたらありえない話です。
その時は、まだ地球そのものがブランドニューのまま保たれていた時代でした。これらの驚くべき人間の生涯年齢は完璧な環境の中に生きた人の年齢なのです。すなわち排気ガス、紫外線、農薬で汚染された食物、有害電波というものがまだ存在していない時代の話なのです。そもそも人間の肉体そのものがブランドニューで、まだ喘息とか癌、脳梗塞のような病気が人の間に生じる前の肉体を彼らは持っていました。彼らが吸う空気も完璧で、彼らは園を歩き、大地を耕し、ストレスがない最高の環境にいました。私達には想像もできない完ぺきな環境の中で今の私達には想像もできない寿命を彼らは生きたのです。
ゆえに後に地球規模の環境破壊となりましたノアの洪水が起こりますまで、この寿命は続き、洪水後になってからは人の寿命はかつての時の半分以下となり、徐々に減り続け、最終的に人の寿命はこれからは１２０年だろうと聖書は我々の生存限界年齢を記しているのです（創世記６章３節）。今日、医学的に見て、多少の例外はあるでしょうが人間の寿命の限界は驚くべきことに、この創世記が既に書き残している１２０年前後となっているのです。
そのような完ぺきな環境を有するエデンの園で問題が起きました。そうです、私達はここで教訓を得ます。そう「問題は最高の環境でも起こる」という教訓です。経済的に何の問題もない。食べるものは全て無農薬で最高品質、家にはスポーツジムがあり、最高の教育を受け、仕事も収入も安定している。しかし、それでも問題は起きます。環境を改善することはとても大切です。時に環境を変えることも大切です。そのことにより、問題が解決することもしばしばあります。しかし、環境が変われば全てがよくなるという保証はありません。問題というのは私達が行く先々にいつもあるものです。そうです、それではなぜどこに行っても問題があるのでしょうか。二つ目のこと、「問題の原因に向き合う」ということをお話しします。
問題の原因に向き合う
アダムとエバに忍び寄ったのは蛇でした。彼は園にいた野の生き物のなかで最も狡猾だった、悪賢かったと聖書は記しています。創世記でこの蛇はサタンとされています。彼はそのところでまずエバに忍び寄り、その巧みな言葉によってエバはその実を食べ、アダムにも食べることを勧め、彼もこの実を食べてしまうのです。
その時まで彼らは身にまとうものなく生きていたようです。しかし、その実を食べた瞬間から彼らは自らを恥ずかしく思うようになり、イチジクの葉で自らを覆うようになりました。そして、神に対しても恐れを感じ、身を隠すようになるのです。
私達はこの「恥」と「恐れ」をしっかりと引き継いで生きています。我が子に向かい「お父さんは恥ずかしい」とか「あの人のことを考えると恐れで震える」というようなことは私達の日常であり、このような人間の感情が小説や映画の題材となっています。今、お話ししているこのアダムとエバの心に芽生えた「恥」と「恐れ」はそれらのものの一番初めのものであり、まさしくこれこそが「恥」と「恐れ」のオリジナルなのです。そして、この「恥」と「恐れ」がどのようにして彼らの心に生まれたのかという、その原因を見出すことこそが、まさしくこれらの問題に悩む者達の問題の解決の糸口となることは言うまでもありません。そう、その問題の「原因」を見つけることこそが問題解決の大前提なのです。
さて、この実を食べた二人に神は問いかけるのです。「あなたが裸であるのを、だれが知らせたのか。食べるなと、命じておいた木から、あなたは取って食べたのか」（創世記３章１１節）。アダムは答えます「わたしと一緒にしてくださったあの女が、木から取ってくれたので、わたしは食べたのです」（創世記３章１２節）。それを受けて神様は女に言います「あなたは、なんということをしたのです」。女は答えた、「へびがわたしをだましたのです。それでわたしは食べました」（創世記３章１３節）。
アダムは自分が実を食べたのは「あなたが私にこの女を与えたからだ」とその原因は「あなた」にあると神様に向かって語りました。そして、同時に「この女が自分にその実を取ってくれたから」と、その原因はエバにもあると言われました。このようにアダムから指さされたエバはどうしたでしょうか。彼女は「蛇に私は騙され、私は食べました」と言ったのです。言うまでもなく、これらの二人の心にはこんな思いがあります。「俺、わたしが悪いのではない。俺、わたしは被害者だ。このことの原因は神にあり、この女にあり、そして蛇にあるのだ」というのが彼らの主張なのです。
少年時代、私はよく自転車にのりました。小学校から帰るといつも自転車にのって好きなところに行っていました。まさしく自転車は私の足でした。でも自転車も乗り続けていると色々なところがが故障します。その最たるものはパンクです。パンクをするといつも町の自転車屋さんに持って行って直してもらっていたのですが、そこのおじさんが自分の自転車を直してくれているのを見ながら、そのうちに自分でパンクを直すようになりました。経験された方かがいるかもしれませんが、自転車がパンクしますと、まずはタイヤを車輪から外して、中にあるチューブをだします。ご存知のようにあのチューブの中には空気が詰まっており、故にタイヤはその役目をはたすのです。パンクとはそのチューブに穴が開いているから起こります。ですからそのチューブのどこに穴が開いているのかを探すのが大切となります。そのチューブの全てに問題があるのではなく、針の穴のような小さな穴がパンクの原因なので、その穴を見つけるのです。そのために、たらいに水を入れ、チューブをそこに沈めていきます。そうしますと穴が開いたところから気泡が出ています。そこがパンクの原因です。原因が分かれば、そこにチューブと同じ材質のパッチをつければ修理完了。そこから再び空気がもれることはありません。
パンクをした人がハンドルが曲がっているからそこを直さなければならないとか、ペダルがおかしいと言っていたのでは、パンクが直されることはありません。そうではなく、パンクの問題の原因を見つけることがまず第一で、見つかってはじめてそれを修理することができるのです。これがパンク修理の原則であり、このことはパンクのみならず、あらゆる問題解決の原則となるのです。
アダムとエバは神の言葉に従わず禁じられていた実を食べました。そして、彼らはその原因を「神」と「エバ」に、そして「蛇」としました。どうやら私達人類はその初めに問題解決を誤ってしまったようです。そして、それは最初のボタンの掛け違いとなり、今日も私達はこのような問題の掛け違いをし続けているのです。
明らかにこのところではアダムもエバも責任を転嫁しています。そして、その矛先になりました蛇だけは責任を転嫁することなく沈黙を保っています。なぜなら、このことは蛇にとりましてはまさしく「してやったり」なことだからです。人間の心に責任を転嫁するという思いがインプットされた限り、後に続く者達もその問題の原因を見極めて、その修復をすることが困難となったからです。「責任転嫁」は問題の原因から目をそらすことですから、その修復と解決へと至ることがなく、問題は未解決のままそこにあり続けますから、さらに問題が広がったり、大きくなったりします。ひいてはその問題に関係している者達の間には不信感が生まれ、怒りや恨みというものすら生まれてきます。このことにより人の世界は混乱し、さらにはそのことにより互いの憎悪が増すのですから、サタンにとりましてはアダム、エバが実を食べたということに加え、その後に彼らが責任を転嫁し始めたということは非常に喜ばしいことなのです。
最近、北朝鮮が五度目となる核実験をしたために世界各国の避難を浴びています。それにたいして北朝鮮側はこんな声明を出しました。「米国こそが我々を核弾頭開発に駆り立てた張本人であり、米国をはじめとする敵対勢力の核戦争の威嚇と制裁騒動に対する実際的な対応措置の一環」と自分達が核実験をしたのは米国および、他国が原因なのだとして、自らを正当としました。この類のことは北朝鮮に限らず、現に今、各国で起きていることであり、さらにはこれら国家間だけに起きていることではなく、私達の間でも日常的に起きていることなのです。そうです、私達はしっかりとアダムとエバのしたことを継承しているのです。
信仰者である私達は時に「このことは悪霊の仕業だ」と言います。確かに聖書は悪霊の存在を認めていますし、私達もその存在を知っています。確かに今も悪霊は私達の世界にはたらきかけていることでしょう。しかし、何から何まで「悪霊の仕業だ」ということになりますと、はたして本当にそうなのだろうかと思うことがあります。それは悪霊の仕業ではなく、私達の頑固さの問題であったり、私達のいたらなさの問題であるということが多々あるからです。それこそ悪霊の側としては、私達がこのように何でもかんでも悪霊の仕業にしていることは願ってもないことなのです。なぜなら私達がその問題を悪霊の仕業としている限り、問題の本当の原因に光は当てられず、その問題の解決は手つかずであり、その問題はそこにあり続け、さらに私達の間に混乱を招くことになるからです。
それでは「神のせいだ。エバのせいだ。蛇のせいだ」と主張したアダムとエバのそもそもの問題の原因は何だったのでしょうか。それはその実に実際に手を伸ばし、最初にそれを口に入れたエバの心の問題であり、それを咎めることなく、食べてしまったアダムの心の問題であり、確かに蛇がその引き金とはなっていますが、その実に手を伸ばし、それを口にいれたのは彼ら自身であったということろにまず彼らは目を留めるべきでした。「俺がこの実を食べてしまったのは神よ、あなたが私にこの女を与えたからだ」という見当違いを持ち続ける限り、この類の問題は再び起こってくるのです。
小さい頃、こんなナゾナゾがありました。「逃げても逃げてもついてくるものはな～に」。そう「影」です。どこに行っても私達の影はついてきます。同じように私達がどこに行ってもついてくるのは私達の心なのです。申し分のない完ぺきな環境に身を置いても、そこには私達の心があります。これが曲者なのです。私達を直接悩みます問題の多くがどこから発生するかと言いますと、それは私達の心からなのです。
私達は今日から「人生の危機管理」というテーマで礼拝メッセージを聞いていきます。アダムとエバのみならず、これから色々な人間の失敗を見ていきます。この毎週のメッセージでは「だからあの人は」とか「この人と」いうことを考えるのではなく、まずは自分の心を省みてください。人生で一番、長いつきあいは自分の伴侶でもなく、親兄弟でもなく、子供でもなく、自分自身なのですから。その心は私達が最高の環境に置かれる時も、最低の環境に置かれる時も、いつも私達と共にあり続けるのですから。
ある人がイケアで本棚を買いました。イケアの家具は自分で組み立てなければなりません。彼は意気揚々と段ボールを広げ、家具を組み立て始めました。しかし、ネジをしめようと思いましても、なかなかネジが閉まりません。何度やってもダメなのです。彼はなんという不良品なんだとぶつぶつ文句を言い始め、最後にはそのキャビネットにあたり、作るのを諦め、それはガレージに置かれました。手つかずのキャビネットはそのまま何年も、埃をかぶったままそこに置かれ続けました。
彼は不良品を手にしてしまったのでしょうか。ネジ穴とネジが合わなかったのでしょうか。製品が梱包される時に手違いがあったのでしょうか。いいえ、彼はネジを締めるために回す向きを知らなかったのです。右に回さなければネジはしまりません。しかし、彼は何度も何度も左に回していたのです。彼はそれに気がつかず、せっかくのキャビネットは使われることなくガレージで埃をかぶっているのです。
これは私が創作した例え話です。ネジの回す方向を知らない人はあまりいませんから、このようなことはほぼ起こらないと思います。しかし、この類のことが私達の人生には度々、ありませんか。問題の原因を突き止めていないゆえに、問題が解決にいたらずに心のガレージに埃をかぶって保留されているということ、ありませんか。
最初にお話ししましたように私達の問題は最高の環境でも起こるものです。ということは必ずしもそれは環境の問題ではないのかもしれません。問題は別のところにあるのかもしれないのです。
警察官が事件を調べる時に何をしますか。その被害を受けた人の回りの家族、交友関係をまず調査します。なぜですか、その人に一番、身近にいる人が何かを知っているかもしれませんし、もしかしたら犯人かもしれません。「身近である」ということはその可能性が高いことを意味します。さらには目撃者を探します。その事件が起きた時に不審な人物はいなかったかと聞き取りをするのです。なぜですか、言うまでもなく、その事件に関与している可能性がその人は高いからです。これらを一言で言いますのなら、その事件が起きた前後、あるいはまさしくその事件の最中に誰が被害者の近くにいたかということを警察はまず調べるのです。これが事件を解決するための調査というものです。そして複数出てきました容疑者のアリバイをとり、一人一人をその容疑者リストから消去していきます。
私達の問題の原因のアプローチもこのように進められていくべきなのでしょう。私達が行く先々でいつも問題があるということでしたら、まず私達が調べるべきものは何でしょうか。そう、まず私達が取りかかるべき人は自分自身です。どこにいっても起こる、そのどこに行っても必ずそこにいるのは自分だけなのですから、私達にアリバイはないのです。まずはそこから始まり、しかし、そこではないのなら、次の原因と思われるものにあたっていくのです。
その時に私達の心が神様の光に照らされるのなら「あなたが与えてくださったこの仕事が」とか「あなたが結ばせてくださったこの人が」とか「この甘い話をもってきたこの人が」とか「この人がこれをくれたから」というようなアダムやエバが言っていたような思いが自分の心にもあることに気がつかされるのです。そして、それが原因なのだと思うことは、私達の誘惑となります。そうです、誰も自分の過ちや失敗、自分がいたらないことに向き合うことはしたくないからです。しかし、その自分がもし問題であるのなら、その問題の解決のために、まずそこから手をつけなければならないのです。
皆さんの心のガレージに未完成のキャビネットはありませんか。私達が組み立てるのを諦めてしまったキャビネットです。なぜなら、あの時、問題があり、解決できずにそれを保留したからです。グッドニュースをお伝えします。私達が諦めてしまった心の倉庫に置かれたこれらのキャビネットはまだ充分に使えるもので、今からでも私達はそれを用いることが出来ます。
あの時、「この問題の原因はこれなんだ」と私達が主張したものがあるかもしれません。しかし、結局、その問題は解決せず、未だに保留されているということはありませんでしょうか。このことに迷宮入りはありませんから、今日、私達はもう一度、そのようなものの問題の原因を神の光の前に照らしていただきませんか。主の御手の中にある命の水の中に、パンクの穴を見つけるかのごとくに自分の心を沈めてみて、放置されている小さな心の穴を見つけてみませんか。そのために二週間前にお話ししました「主の前に一人、静まる」という方法を十二分にお用いください。人生はまだまだ捨てたもんじゃありません。まだまだ主にあって十分に取り返すことができるのですから。
問題はいかなる環境でも起こります。そして、誰もがその解決を願うでしょう。その時、私達はしっかりと原因を見極めなければなりません。「それが私を悩ます問題」であるのなら、その問題に一番、近くいるのは私達自身です。そうであるのなら、まずその原因を探るために取りかかるのは、まず私達の心でありましょう。このチャンスをアダムとエバは逃し、他のものを指さしたゆえに、その問題は保留されてしまったのです。故にこのことは後に彼らの子供達にも大きな影響を与えていきます。そのことについてはまた二週間後にお話ししましょう。主の光が私達一同を照らしてくださり、私達が今も抱えている問題の中に解決を見出すことができますように。お祈りしましょう。

Find the Cause of Our Problems

There is a movie called “Ben-Hur“ currently playing in theaters. It is a remake of the 1959 movie starring Charleston Heston, which had won 11 Oscars. As in this case, it is common for successful movies to be remade. I am not sure about this movie Ben-Hur, but most remakes do not get as much attention as the original, and neither are they valued as much. It is the difference between “ the Original” and “the Copy”.
In February, I went on an Israel tour. Those who had come from a Europe tour mentioned that “As I thought, Israel is on a different level”. What do you think makes it different? Most of Europe’s culture, music, architecture, and art has been influenced by christianity. Israel is the origin of christianity. In other words, that is the original. It is the difference of “what is passed on” and “what is born and developed there”.
There are countless documents written about humans. Even the characters of books and movies are so. Books and movies show what the characters thought, said, and what actions they took. But the first original record of humans is in the bible. In particular, the person we will be focusing on today can be called the original human being. Today, we wish to hear some very important words of the bible from them. We will go back to the time of creation.
The bible, which starts with the words, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” depicts that God created the world in 6 days. 2 weeks ago, I introduced the words of director Akira Kurosawa. As he had said, it is impossible for us humans to create from nothing, and everything we do create comes from what we see and hear. However, the creation of the heavens and earth was indeed from nothing. And at the very end of his creation, as the crown of his creation,God created Adam, and from Adam, Eve. So to speak, they are the beginning of us humans and our original.
They lived in the Garden of Eden, which God had provided for them. It provided everything they needed to live. They were told that they could eat from any tree except the one tree that is in the middle of the garden. One day, as they were living such days in the garden, the following happening occurred.
Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’” “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.”
And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” The man said, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.” Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” (Genesis 3:1-13)
As we all know, this is the story of the first humans, Adam and Eve, tempted by Satan to eat the fruit they were told not to. From this, we will be be looking sat a few things. First, “the problem occurred in the greatest of circumstances”.
The Problem Occurred in the Greatest of Circumstances
When reading Genesis, we come across things that are unimaginable to us today. One of them is that the people of that time lived as long as 912 years or 905 years. (Genesis 5:8-11) It is beyond our common sense today.
It was a time when the earth was still brand new. These surprising life spans were of those who lived in such pristine environmental conditions. A time when air pollution, UV rays, chemically contaminated foods, and harmful radiation did not exist. The human body was also brand new, with no threats of illnesses such as asthma, cancer, or stroke. They lived in a stress free environment with pure air, walking the garden, and cultivating the land. In such unimaginably perfect environment, they lived their unimaginably long life.
And so, until the global environmental destruction of the great flood of Noah, the long life spans continued. But after the flood, the life spans of humans decreased to less than half its original length, and continued to gradually decrease until the limit of the human life span was set to 120 years. (Genesis 6:3) When examining the limit of the human life span scientifically and medically, it is approximately 120 years just as it is written in the bible.
A problem occurred in the Garden of Eden, the place of perfect environment and circumstance. Here we are taught an important lesson. A lesson that “problems occur even in the greatest of circumstances”. No worry of economic problems, with organically grown finest quality foods, a personal gym at home, receiving the finest possible education, and both work and income is stable. Even if so, problems will occur. It is important to improve one’s circumstances, and change them at times. But just this change alone does not guarantee that everything will go well. Problems are always present in whatever path we take. Yes, but why is it that problems are present wherever we go? Our second point is, “facing the Cause of our problems”
Facing the Cause of our Problems
It was a serpent that crept up to Adam and Eve. The bible says that the serpent was more crafty than any of the animals in the garden. In Genesis, the serpent is said to be Satan. He first approached Eve and with his clever words Eve ate the fruit, also giving the fruit to Adam, and he ate it.
Until then, they had lived without covering themselves. Yet, from the moment they ate the fruit, they realized that they were naked, felt ashamed and covered themselves with fig leaves. They also felt fear towards God, and hid themselves.
We live having inherited this “shame” and “fear”. It is in our daily lives to hear the words “father, you’re embarrassing” or “I shake in fear when I think of that person”, and such human emotions become the subject of books and movies. This “shame” and “fear” that was born in the hearts of Adam and Eve was the first and original. And how this “shame” and “fear” came to be, to find the source, is no doubt the beginning to the resolution of our problems. Yes, to find the “casue” of the problem is the major premise to resolution.
To the two who had eaten the forbidden fruit, God asked, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” (Genesis 3:11) Adam answered, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.” (Genesis 3:12) Hearing this God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” (Genesis 3:13)
Adam said that his reason for eating the fruit was because of “the woman you gave me”, that the cause was “you”, towards God. And at the same time, “because this woman gave me the fruit”, that the cause was in Eve. How about Eve who was pointed a finger at by Adam? She said that she was “deceived but the serpent and ate”. Needless to say, the thought going through their mind was “It’s not my fault, I am a victim. The cause of this problem was in God, was in this woman, and in the serpent.” This was their claim.
When I was young, I often rode on my bicycle. In grade school, upon returning from school I would always ride my bicycle to wherever I wanted. The bicycle was my legs. But as I continued to ride it, many parts would break. The most common was a flat tire. When I got a flat tire, I would always take it to the bicycle shop to have it repaired but as I continued to watch the old man fix it, I learned to fix it myself. Some of you may have experienced this but when a bicycle tire goes flat, you remove the tire from the wheel and take out the tube inside. As you know, the tube inside is full of air and thus carries out its purpose. To go flat means that there is a hole in the tube. And so it is important to find where the hole is. It is not the tube as a whole which carries the problem, but the hole the size of the eye of a needle, and so we find the hole. For this we fill a tub with water and submerge the tube. Then we are able to see the bubbles of air leaking out of the hole. That is the cause of the problem. If we know the cause, all that is necessary is to patch the hole with the same material as the tube. The air will no longer leak from there.
The flat tire will not be fixed if the rider looks to the bent handle to fix the problem or the pedal. The first step is to find the cause of the problem, and only after it is found can it be repaired. This is the general rule to fixing a flat tire, and also the general rule in resolving any other problem.
Adam and Eve did not obey the words of God and ate the forbidden fruit. And they placed the cause and blame on “God”, “Eve”, and “the serpent”. It seems that us humans have made an error in the first problem solving situation. And just as one button put in the wrong hole, we continue to make an error in our attempts to solve our problems.
Clearly both Adam and Eve are passing off their responsibility. And only the serpent which lye at the very end point of the blame held its silence. This is because to the serpent it was its motive of deception. With the thought of passing the blame inputted into humans, it became difficult to find the true cause of the problem and fix it. To pass off responsibility is to look away from the true source of the problem, never to coming to a resolution, and that unsettled problem will continue to exist, gradually growing, or causing more problems. Consequently, distrust will grow between those involved, leading to anger and resentment. This will cause disorder within the human world, feeding its hatred. To Satan, it must be an extreme delight to have seen not only that they ate the fruit, but for them to have passed on the blame.
Recently, North Korea conducted its 5th nuclear experiment. It has been criticized by countries all around the world. To these accusations, North Korea’s reply was ‘that the United Staes provoked them into nuclear missile development’ and that this is ‘their response to hostile powers, including the United States.’ in other words, the reason for their nuclear experiments lies on the United States and other countries, and thus justified. Occurrences such as these are not limited to North Korea, happening as we speak in every nation, and not only within countries, but within ourselves in our daily life. We have inherited the actions of Adam and Eve.
Us as believers say this is the “work of evil spirits”. The bible does recognize the existence of evil spirits and so do we. And certainly they do have some influence in our world. However there are somethings that can be questioned when being said that “it is the work of evil spirits”. It is not uncommon for problems to arise from our stubbornness or incompetence rather than by evil spirits. From the view point of an evil spirit, it would be a delight to see us blame them for every problem. Because as long as we are blaming the evil spirits, we are unable to expose the true cause of the problem, and unresolvable, the problem will continue to exist, leading to more disorder.
Then what was the true cause of the problem that Adam and Eve had blamed saying “it is because of God, because of Eve, and because of the serpent”? It was a problem in the heart of Eve who took the fruit and ate it, and the problem in the heart of Adam who did nothing to condemn this action and accepted the fruit. The serpent did act as the trigger for this situation but the the one who had taken the fruit and eaten it was no one but themselves. As long as misdirected thoughts like “the reason why I ate it was because the woman you gave me” problems like these will continue.
When I was a child there was a riddle like this: “What continues to chase you no matter how far you run?” Yes, the answer is “shadow”. Wherever we go our shadow follows us. In the same way, our heart follows us wherever we go. Even in the most perfect of circumstances, our heart still resides. It is the villain. Many of the problems we trouble about is from our hearts.
Starting today, we will continue our service messages on the theme of “Life’s Crisis Management”. We will continue to look at the problems of many others like Adam and Eve. Rather than viewing them with the thoughts like “that is why that person..” or “this person is..”, please reflect and consider your own heart. The longest relationship we have is not with our partner or family members or children, but ourselves. No matter the good or bad circumstances we are put in, our heart will always be with us.
A man bought a bookshelf from Ikea. Ikea furniture must be assembled themselves. He confidently opened the box and began to assemble the parts. But when he tries to tighten the screws, they wouldn’t tighten. He continues to try but they would not tighten. He grumbles saying how the shelf is a piece of junk and and eventually gives up, leaving it in the garage. The bookshelf site for years collecting dust.
Did the man buy a defective product? Were the screws too small for the holes? Was there an error that occurred during its packaging? No. The man just did not know which way to turn the screw. Screws are turned right to tighten. But the man had continued to turn the screw left. The man had not noticed this and so the shelf sat in the garage collecting dust, never to be used.
This is a story I made up. Most everyone knows which way to turn a screw so something like this will probably never happen. But is it not true that things like this happen happen in our daily life? Because we do not seek to find the cause of the problem, the problem is left unresolved in the garage of our heart collecting dust. Does anything come to mind?
As I mentioned earlier, our problems occur even in the greatest of circumstances. Thus, the problem may not lie in our circumstance. The problem lies elsewhere.
When a police officer investigates a crime what does he do? First he inquires the people closest to the victim including their family and friends. Why? Because they may know something or they may even be the culprit. To be “close” raises the possibility. Then they look for any witnesses. They ask whether there was anyone suspicious spotted in the area at the time of the incident. Why? Because there is a high chance that they are somehow involved in the case. To put it simply, the police officer investigates who was near the victim around the time of the incident or at the scene in that frame of time. This is the investigation that takes place in order to solve an unsolved crime. Then they hear the alibis of the suspects, checking them off one by one.
These are the steps one must approach a problem they wish to find the cause of. If there are problems occurring wherever we go, what is it that we must investigate? Yes, the first person we must examine is ourselves. It happens everywhere; in other words, the person always there is yourself, so we have no alibi. We first start there but if the cause of the problem is not there, then we move on to the next possible cause.
If during this time our heart is shone down on by the Lord, thoughts such as, “because of the work you gave me..” or “the person you bound me with..” or “the person who told me such story too good to be true..” or “because this person brought me such thing..” and other thoughts like the words of Adam and Eve are brought to light in our hearts. And we are tempted to believe such statement to be true, that they are the cause of the problem. No one wishes to face the fact that we ourselves are at fault or that we have made a mistake. But, if the problem truly does lie in ourselves, we must work on it to resolve it.
Do you in the garage of your heart have an unfinished shelf? A shelf we have given up on completing? The reason being because that time there was that problem which could not be solved, and we put it on hold. Let me tell you some good news. The shelf we have left in the garage of our heart can very much still be used. We can still make use of it.
Back then, we may have claimed that “this is the cause of the problem”. Yet as a result, the problem was left unsettled, left as it was. There is no such thing as a dead end. So let us reexamine it under the light before God once more. Will you submerge our heart into the the water of life in the hands of God, to find the hole which had been left unfound? For this, please use the method we spoke about 2 weeks ago in the message “Need for a quiet time in front of God”, several times over. Theres always a silver lining waiting to be found. It is never too late to recover through God.
Problems occur under any circumstance. And everyone wishes for a resolve. And in those times, we must find the true cause. It that is the problem that troubles us, the person closest to the problem is ourself. If that is the case, the first place to inspect is our heart. Adam and Eve missed this chance and because they directed the blame to someone else, the problem was left unresolved. Consequently, this largely effected their children, and their children’s children. Lets continue this story in two weeks. May the Lord shine down upon us, and may we find the true cause within our problems we carry today. Lets pray.
