今だもって聖書は世界のベストセラーです。たとえ信仰がない人であっても、この聖書を座右の銘として引用する人達は多くいます。しかし、それも知識や理性で理解しうる範囲までで、人の知識とか理性を超えた内容になりますと「ああ、それはいいです」ということになってしまうのです。しかし、そもそも聖書は神について書き記しているのですから、その内容が人の知識や理性をもって理解しえないものであっても、それは当然なのです。私達のこの小さな頭脳の中に収まるようなものであるのなら、聖書が伝えるメッセージは人の理性以下のものであるということでありましょう。

テサロニケ第二の手紙：終末の経緯について

私たちは先週、テサロニケ第一の手紙より聖書が語る死後の世界について見てまいりました。その第一の手紙はテサロニケの教会の中に「キリストが再び、この世界にくる日は近いのだから、もはや働く必要などないという者達」や（テサロニケ第一の手紙４章１１節）、「既に亡くなっている者達に対して悲しみをいだいている者達」（テサロニケ第一の手紙４章１３節－１４節）がおり、彼らに対してパウロが訓戒と慰めを書き記したものでした。それに対してテサロニケ第二の手紙は第一の手紙が書かれてから数ヶ月後にパウロが再度、書いて送ったものです。すなわち再臨が既に来たと考える者達や（テサロニケ第二の手紙２章２節）、世の終わりが近いとして、働くことをやめて怠惰に暮らしている者たちがいる（テサロニケ第二の手紙３章１１節）という事態を知ったパウロはこの手紙を書き送ってその誤りを正そうとしたのです。これらから分かりますように、このテサロニケ第二の手紙の背景にもキリストの再臨というテーマがありました。
そこで、先週は私達が死んでから後の世界について聖書が言うところを見てまいりました。すなわちイエス・キリスト以前の旧約時代において全ての人は死んだ後に黄泉という場所にくだりましたが、イエス様が十字架において肉体の死を迎えた後に、イエス様ご自身がこの黄泉にまでくだり、そこに囚われていた旧約時代の聖徒達をしたがえてパラダイスにのぼられたということです。そして、今、現在、私達は死ぬとこのパラダイスに行くか、もしくは黄泉に下るのかという、この二つの間に生きているということです。
そして、この状態は“ある時”がくると、また状況が変わります。その“ある時”というのはテサロニケの手紙のテーマとなっていおります「再臨」が来た時です。再臨とはイエス・キリストが再びこの世界に来られることをいいます。
今だもって聖書は世界のベストセラーです。たとえ信仰がない人であっても、この聖書を座右の銘として引用する人達は多くいます。しかし、それも知識や理性で理解しうる範囲までで、人の知識とか理性を超えた内容になりますと「ああ、それはいいです」ということになってしまうのです。しかし、そもそも聖書は神について書き記しているのですから、その内容が人の知識や理性をもって理解しえないものであっても、それは当然なのです。私達のこの小さな頭脳の中に収まるようなものであるのなら、聖書が伝えるメッセージは人の理性以下のものであるということでありましょう。
再臨の約束というのは聖書の中では夢物語として語られているのではなくて、確かなるイエス様の約束として受け止められており、キリストなき後の世界に確かに弟子たちはこの再臨の希望を原動力として宣教を進めたのです。
今日はこの再臨について、またさらにその先のことについて、すなわち、この世界はその最後にどうなるのかということについて聖書が記していることをお話します。まず最初にこの再臨ということどれだけ大切なものとして聖書の中で語られていたかということについてお話しましょう。
イエス・キリストは十字架にかかり、死んでからよみがえり、４０日にわたり弟子達や多くの人達の前に姿をあらわしました。そして、その最後に弟子達と共にオリーブ山に登りました。その時のことを使徒行伝はこう記しています。
6 さて、弟子たちが一緒に集まったとき、イエスに問うて言った、「主よ、イスラエルのために国を復興なさるのは、この時なのですか」。7 彼らに言われた、「時期や場合は、父がご自分の権威によって定めておられるのであって、あなたがたの知る限りではない。8 ただ、聖霊があなたがたにくだる時、あなたがたは力を受けて、エルサレム、ユダヤとサマリヤの全土、さらに地のはてまで、わたしの証人となるであろう」。9 こう言い終ると、イエスは彼らの見ている前で天に上げられ、雲に迎えられて、その姿が見えなくなった。10 イエスの上って行かれるとき、彼らが天を見つめていると、見よ、白い衣を着たふたりの人が、彼らのそばに立っていて11 言った、「ガリラヤの人たちよ、なぜ天を仰いで立っているのか。あなたがたを離れて天に上げられたこのイエスは、天に上って行かれるのをあなたがたが見たのと同じ有様で、またおいでになるであろう」。12 それから彼らは、オリブという山を下ってエルサレムに帰った。この山はエルサレムに近く、安息日に許されている距離のところにある（使徒行伝１章６節－１２節）。
呆然と天を見上げている弟子達に御使いがこう言ったのです「ガリラヤの人たちよ、なぜ天を仰いで立っているのか。あなたがたを離れて天に上げられたこのイエスは、天に上って行かれるのをあなたがたが見たのと同じ有様で、またおいでになるであろう」。御使いが彼らに言ったことは、イエス・キリストは今、天に登られたのと同じ有様で、再びおいでになるという約束です。すなわち、これは再臨のことなのです。
そして、この再臨の約束はこのところで初めて弟子たちが聞いたものではありませんでした。皆さんに何度もお話しておりますようにイエス様が十字架にかけられる前に受けた裁判の場でイエス様は終始自らを弁護するような言葉を一言も発することなく黙していました。業を煮やした大祭司はイエス様に尋ねました「何も答えないのか。これらの人々があなたに対して不利な証言を申し立てているが、どうなのか」。それに対してもイエス様は黙しておりました。大祭司はさらに問いかけました「あなたは、ほむべき者の子、キリストであるか」。この一言に対してイエス様は初めて口を開きました「わたしがそれである。あなたがたは人の子が力ある者の右に座し、天の雲に乗って来るのを見るであろう」。 すると、大祭司はその衣を引き裂いて言いました「どうして、これ以上、証人の必要があろう。あなたがたはこのけがし言を聞いた。あなたがたの意見はどうか」。すると、彼らは皆、イエスを死に当るものと断定したと聖書は記録しています（以上、マルコ１４章５３節－６５節）。このところでイエス様が言われたことはまさしく再臨のことです。私達にとりまして到底信じることができないような、非現実的に思える再臨の証言にキリストは命をかけたという事実が私達の心をとらえます
さて、それではこの再臨についてさらに詳しくみてまいりましょう。イエス・キリストの再臨は二つの段階があり、第一の再臨は「空中再臨」と呼ばれ、第二の再臨は「地上再臨」と呼ばれています。最初に空中再臨について見てまいりましょう。テサロニケ第一の手紙を読みます。
13 兄弟たちよ。眠っている人々については、無知でいてもらいたくない。望みを持たない外の人々のように、あなたがたが悲しむことのないためである。14 わたしたちが信じているように、イエスが死んで復活されたからには、同様に神はイエスにあって眠っている人々をも、イエスと一緒に導き出して下さるであろう。15 わたしたちは主の言葉によって言うが、生きながらえて主の来臨の時まで残るわたしたちが、眠った人々より先になることは、決してないであろう。16 すなわち、主ご自身が天使のかしらの声と神のラッパの鳴り響くうちに、合図の声で、天から下ってこられる。その時、キリストにあって死んだ人々が、まず最初によみがえり、17 それから生き残っているわたしたちが、彼らと共に雲に包まれて引き上げられ、空中で主に会い、こうして、いつも主と共にいるであろう。18 だから、あなたがたは、これらの言葉をもって互に慰め合いなさい（テサロニケ第一の手紙４章１３節－１８節）。
ここには再臨のまず第一として空中再臨ということが書かれています。その時には天使のかしらの声と神のラッパの鳴り響く中、まさしくオリーブ山から天に帰られたのと同じ有様で主ご自身が天からこの地に下ってくるというのです。そうしますと、キリストにあってパラダイスにあって眠っていた人々がまず最初によみがえり、神の憐みと恵みによりその時、この地上で生きているキリストにある者達も共に雲に包まれて引き上げられ、空中で主に会い、こうして、いつも主と共にいるというのです。この空中で主と出会うことは教会とキリストの婚宴が空中で行われるという言葉で象徴的に語られており、「小羊の婚宴」と呼ばれているもので、これがキリストの第一の再臨です。まさしくこれはイエス様がヨハネ１４章で約束されていることです。
1「あなたがたは、心を騒がせないがよい。神を信じ、またわたしを信じなさい。2わたしの父の家には、すまいがたくさんある。もしなかったならば、わたしはそう言っておいたであろう。あなたがたのために、場所を用意しに行くのだから。3そして、行って、場所の用意ができたならば、またきて、あなたがたをわたしのところに迎えよう。わたしのおる所にあなたがたもおらせるためである（ヨハネ１４章１節－３節）。
このところに記されています「場所を用意しに行く」とは先ほどお話しました十字架、復活後の召天です。そして、その先で場所を用意し、私達を迎えるためにまた戻ってくるというのです、これが空中再臨のことです。私たちは今、この再臨を待ち望んで生きているのです。
さて、第二の再臨ですが、それは地上再臨ということです。教会が携え挙げられ、子羊の婚宴がもたれた後に、地上はどうなるのかということ、このことについて学者たちの間では色々な意見が取り交わされているのですが、この空中再臨の後、大患難と呼ばれる時代が始まるというのです。その時についてある神学者は「もしも、朝、起きてみてあなたの家族や友人が携え上げられていないということに気がついたら、これからサタンのはたらきが縦横無尽に世界に吹き荒れるから、その時は覚悟しなさい。おそらく命を捨てて殉教しなければ救いにあずかることはできないだろう」と言っています。この時は悪の力がこの世界の主流となり、額や手にサタンの刻印が押され、それが押されていないと生きながらえないという時代がくるというのです。
そして、その大患難時代の終わりには先に天に携え挙げられた者達がキリストと共にこの地上に再び臨みます。これが第二の再臨、地上再臨です。そして、その時から「千年王国」という千年の間の神の支配がこの地上におよぶといいます。この千年の間、サタンは幽閉されるということが書かれており、先の大患難時代とはまったく逆の神の恵みの支配が全世界に１０００年の間、およびます。その様はヨハネ黙示録が書き記しているとおりです。
1またわたしが見ていると、ひとりの御使が、底知れぬ所のかぎと大きな鎖とを手に持って、天から降りてきた。2彼は、悪魔でありサタンである龍、すなわち、かの年を経たへびを捕えて千年の間つなぎおき、3そして、底知れぬ所に投げ込み、入口を閉じてその上に封印し、千年の期間が終るまで、諸国民を惑わすことがないようにしておいた。その後、しばらくの間だけ解放されることになっていた（ヨハネ黙示録２０章１節－３節）。
そして、先に申し上げましたように大患難時代の中、殉教してまでもその信仰を守り通した者達もこの千年時代には復活されると続くヨハネ黙示録はそのような殉教者の様を記しています。
4また見ていると、かず多くの座があり、その上に人々がすわっていた。そして、彼らにさばきの権が与えられていた。また、イエスのあかしをし神の言を伝えたために首を切られた人々の霊がそこにおり、また、獣をもその像をも拝まず、その刻印を額や手に受けることをしなかった人々がいた。彼らは生きかえって、キリストと共に千年の間、支配した。5（それ以外の死人は、千年の期間が終るまで生きかえらなかった。）これが第一の復活である。6この第一の復活にあずかる者は、さいわいな者であり、また聖なる者である。この人たちに対しては、第二の死はなんの力もない。彼らは神とキリストとの祭司となり、キリストと共に千年の間、支配する。7千年の期間が終ると、サタンはその獄から解放される（ヨハネ黙示録２０章４節－７節）。
この所に記されている「イエスのあかしをし神の言を伝えたために首を切られた人々の霊がそこにおり、また、獣をもその像をも拝まず、その刻印を額や手に受けることをしなかった人々」とはまさしく、大患難時代に死を覚悟して、サタンの刻印を額や手に受けることのなかった数少ない人達であり、まさしくこのような人達もキリストと共に千年王国に入れられたのです。いったい、この千年王国とはどんな世界なのでしょうか。イザヤはその時というものをこのように象徴的に書き記しました。
17 見よ、わたしは新しい天と、新しい地とを創造する。さきの事はおぼえられることなく、心に思い起すことはない。18 しかし、あなたがたはわたしの創造するものにより、とこしえに楽しみ、喜びを得よ。見よ、わたしはエルサレムを造って喜びとし、その民を楽しみとする。19 わたしはエルサレムを喜び、わが民を楽しむ。泣く声と叫ぶ声は再びその中に聞えることはない（イザヤ６５章１７節‐１９節）。
この千年王国においては泣く声、叫ぶ声が聞かれることはなく、私達は神と共にこの年月の間を喜び、楽しみむというのです。学者によってこの１０００年という数にも色々な解釈がありますが、それが文字通り１０００年であっても、とても長い期間を指し示すものであって、とにもかくにも、その間にはサタンの支配はまったくなく、神が私達に与えてくださる喜びと平安が全地に満ちるというのです。さて、その先はどうなるのでしょうか。この千年王国が終わりますと、何が起こるのでしょうか。その時には大審判と呼ばれることが起こります。ヨハネ黙示録を見てみましょう。
7千年の期間が終ると、サタンはその獄から解放される。8 そして、出て行き、地の四方にいる諸国民、すなわちゴグ、マゴグを惑わし、彼らを戦いのために召集する。その数は、海の砂のように多い。9彼らは地上の広い所に上ってきて、聖徒たちの陣営と愛されていた都とを包囲した。すると、天から火が下ってきて、彼らを焼き尽した。10そして、彼らを惑わした悪魔は、火と硫黄との池に投げ込まれた。そこには、獣もにせ預言者もいて、彼らは世々限りなく日夜、苦しめられるのである。11また見ていると、大きな白い御座があり、そこにいますかたがあった。天も地も御顔の前から逃げ去って、あとかたもなくなった。12また、死んでいた者が、大いなる者も小さき者も共に、御座の前に立っているのが見えた。かずかずの書物が開かれたが、もう一つの書物が開かれた。これはいのちの書であった。死人はそのしわざに応じ、この書物に書かれていることにしたがって、さばかれた。13海はその中にいる死人を出し、死も黄泉もその中にいる死人を出し、そして、おのおのそのしわざに応じて、さばきを受けた。14それから、死も黄泉も火の池に投げ込まれた。この火の池が第二の死である。15このいのちの書に名がしるされていない者はみな、火の池に投げ込まれた（ヨハネ黙示録２０章７節－１５節）。
千年王国の時代が終わりますと、幽閉されていたサタンが解放されます。それはサタンが我がもの顔で振る舞うようになるということではなく、それまで創世記以来、人類を惑わし、その悪を尽くしてきたサタンが捕えられていよいよ永遠の滅亡の中に断罪される時であり、その様は天からの火によって彼らが焼き尽くされるであろうというような象徴的な言葉で記されています。さらにこの黙示録にはその時に白い御座があり、そこには死んでいた者が、大いなる者も小さき者も共に、その御座に立っているのが見え、その者達はいのちの書に記されているそのしわざに応じて、裁かれるというのです。
もう一度、確認します。空中再臨によって、まずかつてキリストの救いを信じて死んだ者達およびキリスト以前に神と共に生き、黄泉からパラダイスに引き上げられた者達がよみがえり、その後にその時に生存しているキリストを信じる者達と共に天に携えあげられます。しかし、そうでない者達はそのまま地上に残り、地球には大患難時代が訪れます。その時には殉教を覚悟しなければ主のもとに行くことはできぬほどに悪が世に満ちます。その大患難時代の終わりにはキリストがかつて空中再臨の時に共に携えあげたクリスチャン達と共に再び地上に臨み、その時にはサタンが幽閉され、この大患難時代に殉教した者達と共に神の全き支配に満ちた千年王国が始まります。
千年王国の終わりには再び、サタンが解放されますが、それは神の前に完全に絶滅されるためであり、同時に人に対する最後の裁きがなされます。その時に主の前に立ち審判を受ける者達、とは誰なのでしょうか。覚えていらっしゃいますか。そうです、それはキリストの十字架を信じることがない者達、また、これまでにお話してきましたパラダイスではなく、黄泉に居続けた者達です。その者達は神の前に立たなければならないと聖書は言います。私達は「いつの日か神の前に立ち、裁かれる日がくる」と言いますが、まさしく、それがこの時のことであり、既にキリストにあってその罪が赦されている者はその裁きの座に立つ必要はないのです。
なぜなら、その人達も確かに罪を犯した罪人ではありますが、その罪がキリストの十字架によって赦されているからです。その罪の罰をキリストが代わりとなって受けてくださっているということを信じ、生きてきたからです。ゆえに彼らの罪の負債は既にキリストの十字架ゆえに支払われていますゆえに、彼らは裁きの座に立つ必要がないのです。
主にある兄弟姉妹、私達は今までお話してきましたこれら全てのことを踏まえて、あのパウロが書いたコリント第二の手紙の言葉をもう一度、受け止めなおすのです。
『1わたしたちはまた、神と共に働く者として、あなたがたに勧める。神の恵みをいたずらに受けてはならない。2神はこう言われる、「わたしは、恵みの時にあなたの願いを聞きいれ、救の日にあなたを助けた」。見よ、今は恵みの時、見よ、今は救の日である』。まさしく、これから起こる諸々のことを思うのなら、私達はまさしく今日という日が救いの日、今は恵みの時なのです。
そして、これが最後です。その大審判の後に世界はどうなるのでしょうか。神はこの世界を焼き尽くし、新しい天と地を創造されます。すなわち新天新地がこの世界にあらわれるのです。ペテロはそのことをこのように書きました。
8愛する者たちよ。この一事を忘れてはならない。主にあっては、一日は千年のようであり、千年は一日のようである。9ある人々がおそいと思っているように、主は約束の実行をおそくしておられるのではない。ただ、ひとりも滅びることがなく、すべての者が悔改めに至ることを望み、あなたがたに対してながく忍耐しておられるのである。10しかし、主の日は盗人のように襲って来る。その日には、天は大音響をたてて消え去り、天体は焼けてくずれ、地とその上に造り出されたものも、みな焼きつくされるであろう。11このように、これらはみなくずれ落ちていくものであるから、神の日の到来を熱心に待ち望んでいるあなたがたは、12極力、きよく信心深い行いをしていなければならない。その日には、天は燃えくずれ、天体は焼けうせてしまう。13しかし、わたしたちは、神の約束に従って、義の住む新しい天と新しい地とを待ち望んでいる。14愛する者たちよ。それだから、この日を待っているあなたがたは、しみもなくきずもなく、安らかな心で、神のみまえに出られるように励みなさい。（ペテロ第二の手紙３章８節‐１４節）。
ヨハネは黙示録の中でこう書いています。1 わたしはまた、新しい天と新しい地とを見た。先の天と地とは消え去り、海もなくなってしまった。2 また、聖なる都、新しいエルサレムが、夫のために着飾った花嫁のように用意をととのえて、神のもとを出て、天から下って来るのを見た。3 また、御座から大きな声が叫ぶのを聞いた、「見よ、神の幕屋が人と共にあり、神が人と共に住み、人は神の民となり、神自ら人と共にいまして、4 人の目から涙を全くぬぐいとって下さる。もはや、死もなく、悲しみも、叫びも、痛みもない。先のものが、すでに過ぎ去ったからである」（ヨハネ黙示録２１章１節－４節）。
その新天新地においては神が私達と共にあり、生きていた時に受けた全ての不条理、悲しみによって私達の頬を濡らした涙を全て拭い取ってくださるのです。そして、その新天新地にはもはや死もなく、悲しみも、叫びも、痛みもありません。
続く２２節以降にはその新天新地の様として『22わたしは、この都の中には聖所を見なかった。全能者にして主なる神と小羊とが、その聖所なのである。23都は、日や月がそれを照す必要がない。神の栄光が都を明るくし、小羊が都のあかりだからである』と記されています。その地には聖所がなく、まさしく神と小羊とが聖所であり、明りだというのです。しかしながら、神なら分かるけれど小羊とは何ですか。そう、最初の人、アダムとイブが罪を犯した時、神様は彼らに動物の毛皮、すなわち羊の命と引き換えに彼らの恥を覆う皮を与えました。エジプトから脱出するために小羊が殺され、その血がかもいと柱に塗られ、その血が塗られた家は死が免れました。これらの歴史の上に神は神の小羊、イエス・キリストをこの世界に送られ、その究極的な身代わりとしてキリストは私達のために十字架にかけられたのです。もし、私達がキリストの十字架を己がためであったと信じ、悔い改めるのなら私たちは救われます。それが聖書が何千年来、言い続けているメッセージです。このことにより、私達はあの大審判において神の前に裁かれることはないのです。
私達は「一つにとらわれずに全体と」という標語で昨年一年を歩んできましたが、この一つにとらわれず全体をという「全体」の幅は、その未来に関していえばこの新天新地までいたるのです。このところまでを含めて、今、私達が経験していることはどんな意味があるのか、そのことを思いますのなら、私達はその今を違った視点で見ることができるのです。
イエス・キリストはかつて言われました「天地は滅びるであろう。しかしわたしの言葉は決して滅びることがない」（ルカ２１章３３節）。かたちある物は必ず朽ちるように、天地も確かに滅びることでしょう。しかし、主の約束の言葉はその中で決して滅びることはないのです。私達はこの神の言葉を私達の行く手を照らす灯としてこれからも先に進んでいくのです。お祈りしましょう。
2 Thessalonians : The sequence of the end times June 23, 2013
Last week, we learned about the life
after death in 1 Thessalonians. In the
church of Thessalonica, there were people
who believed they no longer
needed to work since Jesus would return soon”. (1 Thessalonians 4:11) or there
were people who mourned the one who had already passed away. (4:13-14) So
Paul wrote a letter to reprimand the
idlers and to comfort those who were grieving for the dead. 2 Thessalonians was sent by Paul again
several months after the first Thessalonians to meet a new situation. Since he learned that there were people who believed the day
of the Lord had already come ( 2
Thessalonians 2:2) or people who believed the end times was at hand and stopped working and being lazy, (2
Thessalonians 3:11) he wanted to correct
those wrong teaching among them. therefore the second coming of Christ is also
the theme of this letter, 1Thessalonians.
Last week, we learned what the Bible
says about the life after death. It
says that all of the people who had
lived before Jesus’ time descended to
Hades after they died. But after Jesus
died physically on the cross, he himself descended to Hades. Then he
ascended from Hades to Paradise
taking up all saints who lived in the
time of old testament and had been
imprisoned there. So we who are
alive now have a choice either for the
life after death, going to paradise or going to Hades after we die.
But this situation will be changed
when the time comes. The time means the
second coming of Christ, the theme of 2 Thessalonians. It means that Jesus Christ will return to the
earth.
The Bible has been the best seller in the world even now. There
are many people who quote the Bible passage as their motto even if they don’t
have faith in God. They accept the Bible
verse as long as they can understand, but if what the verse says is beyond their comprehension, they reject it
saying “ No thank you”. The Bible is
written about God. So I think it is natural
that we don’t understand everything it says.
If we could understand everything
what Bible says, the message of the Bible would
be less significant than man’s knowledge.
In the Bible, the promise of the
second coming of Christ is not a fantasy
but is believed as the certain promise made by Jesus . Certainly, the apostles pushed on with their
mission motivated by the hope of the
second coming of Christ after he had gone.
Today, I want to tell what the Bible
says about the second coming of Christ and more further. It means what will happen to the world at the end.
First, let me tell how important the Second Coming of Christ is in the Bible.
Jesus Christ was crucified, died and
resurrected. Then he presented himself
to apostles and many other people for forty days. Finally, he went up the Mount of Olives with
the apostles. This part is written in the Acts.
‘6Then
they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to
restore the kingdom to Israel?”7
He said to them: “It is
not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you
will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my
witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the
earth.” 9 After
he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from
their sight. 10
They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly
two men dressed in white stood beside them.11 “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do
you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from
you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into
heaven.” 12 Then the apostles
returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day’s
walk from the city.’
The angels said to the apostles who
were looking into the sky in wonder, “Men of Galilee, why
do you stand here looking into the sky?
This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go
into heaven.” What the angels told them
was the promise that Jesus will return in the same way he ascended to
heaven. This is the Second Coming of
Christ.
This was not the first time for
apostles to hear about this promise. As
I told you many times before, Jesus was quiet and never justified himself at
the court before being crucified. The
high priest became angry and asked Jesus “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that
these men are bringing against you?” But Jesus remained silent. The high priest asked him again,” “Are you the
Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?” Jesus finally answered, “I am.
And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the
right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.” The High Priest tore his clothes and said, “Why do we need any more
witnesses? You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?” They all condemned him as worthy of death. This is what the Bible tells us. (Mark14:53-65) What Jesus said here was about the second coming of Christ. It is impressive that Jesus risked his life for testifying about his returning which sounds
unbelievable and unreal.
Let’s see more details of the second
coming of Christ. There are two
phases. The first one is called
“rapture” and the second one is called “
the second coming” Let me explain about
rapture first. let’s read the first
Thessalonians chapter 4 verse 13 to 18.
“13Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be
uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the
rest of mankind, who have no hope. 14 For we believe that Jesus died and
rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have
fallen asleep in him. 15 According
to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until
the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen
asleep. 16 For
the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the
voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ
will rise first. 17
After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together
with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the
Lord forever. 18
Therefore encourage one another with these words.”
The rapture is written
as the first event. It says that Jesus
will come down with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God
from heaven in the same way he ascended
to heaven from the mount of Olives.
Then people in paradise who died in Christ will rise first. And by God’s mercy and grace, Christians who
are still alive will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the
air. They will be with the Lord
forever. The word “meeting the Lord in
the air” is described symbolically in the Bible as the feast of wedding between
the church (means all believers) and Christ.
This is called the wedding feast of lamb and the first event of the
second coming of Christ. It is the
promise made by Jesus written in John chapter 14.
’14“Do not let your hearts be troubled You believe
in God[a];believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so,
would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go
and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that
you also may be where I am.’
The word “I am going
there to prepare a place for you” means Christ’s ascension after the death on
the cross and resurrection as I told you a little while ago. Then it says that he will return to welcome
us after preparing a places for us. This
is the rapture. Now we are looking
forward to this event.
The second event is called the second coming. There are
many opinions about what will happen on this earth after the rapture and
the wedding feast of lamb. But we know that the great tribulation will start. One theologian warns that when we notice that
our family and friends are left behind one morning, it will be the time for
Satan to become active. So they should
be ready for the persecution and they probably won’t be saved unless being
martyred. The wickedness will be in power. People will receive marks of the beast on their foreheads or
hands. The difficult time will come as people can’t survive
without those marks.
Then at the end of the
great tribulation, people who were taken up to heaven will return to the earth
with Christ. This is the second event
called the second coming. From this
time, God will begin to rule the earth
for a thousand years. It is called the Millennial Kingdom. Satan will be bound for one thousand
years. God’s grace will reign all over the world for a thousand
years. It is a totally opposite
situation from the great tribulation.
Here are the verses about it in Revelation written by John.
“And I saw an angel
coming down out of heaven, having the key to the Abyss and holding in his hand
a great chain. 2
He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan, and
bound him for a thousand years. 3 He threw him into the Abyss, and locked and sealed it over him,
to keep him from deceiving the nations anymore until the thousand years were
ended. After that, he must be set free for a short time.” (Revelation20:1-3)
Martyred people who kept
their faith until their death will
resurrected in this era of Millennium.
The following is written about them in Revelation.
“4 I saw thrones on which
were seated those who had been given authority to judge. And I saw the souls of
those who had been beheaded because of their testimony about Jesus and because
of the word of God. They had not worshiped the
beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their
hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years. 5 (The rest
of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended.) This is
the first resurrection. 6 Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection.
The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of
Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years.” (Revelation 20:4-7)
People written here were
beheaded because of their testimony
about Jesus and the word of God. They were a small number of people who dared not to obey the beast. They didn’t
worship idols or didn’t receive its mark on their foreheads or their
hands. Those were welcomed into the Millennial
Kingdom with Jesus. What is the
Millennial Kingdom like? Isaiah wrote
about it symbolically.
“See, I will create new
heavens and a new earth. The former
things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind. 8But
be glad and rejoice forever in what I will create, for I will create Jerusalem
to be a delight and its people a joy.19 I will rejoice over Jerusalem and
take delight in my people; the sound of weeping and of crying will be heard in
it no more.” (Isaiah 65:17-19)
There is no weeping and
crying in the Millennial Kingdom, and we will rejoice with God during this period of time. Depending on theologians, the interpretation
of the millennium varies. It may
literally mean one thousand years, or it may mean a long
period of time. Anyway, there will no
rule of Satan at all. The earth will be
filled with joy and peace from God. Then
do you know what is waiting ahead?
What will happen after the Millennial Kingdom is over? It will be followed by the final
judgment. Let’s read revelation.
(chapter 20verse 7 to 15)
7 When the thousand years are over, Satan will be
released from his prison 8 and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the
earth—Gog and Magog—and to gather them for battle. In number they are like the
sand on the seashore. 9 They marched across the breadth of the earth and surrounded the
camp of God’s people, the city he loves. But fire came down from heaven and
devoured them.10
And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning
sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be
tormented day and night for ever and ever. 11Then I saw a great white throne and him
who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and
there was no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small,standing before the throne,
and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The
dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. 13 The sea
gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that
were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done. 14 Then death
and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second
death. 15 Anyone
whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake
of fire.”revelation 20:7-15)
After the Millennium is over, Satan who was imprisoned will be
released. It doesn’t mean that Satan is
in power again. It is the time for Satan
to be judged and to be destroyed forever
as he deceived human and did all kinds
of evil since the time of Genesis. It is
described symbolically as the fire from
heaven devoured them. It is also said that there is a white
throne. There are many dead, great and
small, standing before the throne. They
are to be judged by what they had
done recorded in the book of life.
Let me restate this event again.
At first, by the rapture, the dead who believed the salvation through
Jesus Christ and the dead before the
time of Christ who were taken up to paradise from Hades will rise. Then people
who are alive and believing Christ will be taken up to heaven. But people who don’t believe in Jesus will be
left on the earth. The great tribulation
will start. The evil power will become too powerful for people to go to heaven
without being martyred. At the end of
the tribulation, Christ will return to the earth with Christians taken by the
rapture. The Satan will be imprisoned.
Then the Millennial Kingdom ruled by God will begin with people who are
martyred during the tribulation.
Satan will be released for a while at the end of the Millennium. But it is for the purpose of being destroyed
completely by God. At the same time,
God’s judgment for people will be done.
Who are the people standing before God and having a judgment? Do you remember? Yes. they are the people who didn’t believe
in the cross of Christ. And people who
have been in Hades but not in paradise.
The Bible says that these people have to stand before God. We usually say that the judgment day will
come someday. Surely, this is the time I
am talking about. The one who is already
forgiven his sins by Christ doesn’t need to stand at the judgment place.
It is because they are forgiven by Jesus who died on the cross
although they are sinners. They believe
that Jesus received their punishment in their place. Since their penalty of sins were already paid
through Jesus’ cross, they don’t need to stand for the judgment.
Brothers and sisters in Christ. Now we reconsider
the meaning of the word written in 2 Corinthians through what we learned
today. “6As God’s co-workers we urge you not
to receive God’s grace in vain. 2 For he says,“In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day
of salvation I helped you.”[a]I tell you, now is the time of God’s
favor, now is the day of salvation.”(2 Corinthians 6”1-2) Thinking of the event coming ahead, surely, today is the time of salvation and the
time of grace for us.
Now here is the last event.
What will happen on the earth after the final judgment? God will consume the earth with fire and will
create a new earth and a new heaven.
The new heaven and earth will appear.
Peter wrote like this.
“8 But
do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a
thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. 9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his
promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not
wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. 10 But the
day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar;
the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it
will be laid bare.[a] 11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind
of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12 as you
look forward to the day of God and speed its coming.[b]
That day will bring about
the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. 13 But in
keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new
earth, where righteousness dwells. 14 So then, dear friends, since you are
looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and
at peace with him.”
John wrote in Revelation. (chapter 21: 1-4) Then I saw “a new
heaven and a new earth,”[a]
for the first heaven and
the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2 I saw the
Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a
bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the
throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will
dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and
be their God. 4
‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’[b]
or mourning or crying or pain,
for the old order of things has passed away.”
God
dwells among us in a new heaven and a new earth. God will wipe all tears from our eyes caused
by many irrational incidents and sorrow we have while we’re living. There is no longer death, mourning, crying or
pain.
Verse
22 and a following verse are description
about a new heaven and a new earth.
“23 The city does not
need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light,
and the Lamb is its lamp. 24 The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth
will bring their splendor into it.”
There is no holy place. God and
his lamb themselves are the holy place and light. We understand God but what does it mean by
the Lamb? When Adam, the first man, committed a sin, God
gave them an animal fur to cover their
shame by exchanging the life of lamb.
When people in Israel escaped from Egypt, lambs are killed and the blood
of them were painted on the lintels and posts.
The house painted with blood were saved from the death. After those events, God sent Jesus Christ,
the lamb of God, to this earth. He was
crucified for us as the ultimate
sacrifice. If we believe in that Jesus’
cross is for us and repent of our sins,
we are saved. This is the message
of the Bible that has being telling for
several thousands years. So, we don’t
have to stand at the final judgment before God.
Last year, we had a motto “ not looking at parts but whole”. Whole
can be meant the events happening in the future like creation of a new heaven
and a new earth. Thinking of the far future, we can try to understand the
meaning of our present experiences
now. We can see our present time
with a different point of view.
Jesus Christ said, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words
will never pass away.”( Luke 21:33) The
heaven and earth surely will be demolished including non-living and living
things. But God’s word of promise never
perishes. We keep moving forward holding God’s word as the light to shine our
way. Let’s pray.
