わたし達はよく「God bless you」と言います。この言葉から気がつくことがありませんか。この言葉の主語は誰ですか。その主語は神様なのです。神様が私達を祝福してくださるということです。私達はこれまで何度もこの「God bless you」と言う言葉を聞いてきましたが、さすがに「You bless yourself」とか「I bless myself」という言葉を聞いたことがないのです。しかしです、そのような言葉を聞いたことはないのですが、あたかもそのように私達は生きていることはありませんか。すなわち、私達は「I try to bless myself」というようにして毎日を過ごしていませんか。「なんということか、そう言われてみたらそうだ」と思われる方いませんか。
主にある兄弟姉妹、どうか覚えてください、全てのブレッシング、祝福は神様から私達に注がれるのです。もし天に扉があり、そこから私達に祝福が注がれるのであるならば、その扉を開閉するのは私達ではなく神様なのです。こちらからこじあけるなどということはできないのです。

ハガイ書：現状をもう一度考えよ。 ２０１３年１月２０日
一年前に始まりました「一つにとらわれずに全体を！」という日曜日毎に一書づつ紐解いてきました礼拝メッセージ・シリーズも今日のハガイ書を含めて旧約聖書は残り三書となりました。何度もお話ししておりますが、その書が書かれた時代の背景を理解しておくことはとても大切なことですので今朝も確認させていただきます。繰り返しお話していますので、これらのことは皆さんの心にも焼きついていることと思います。
サウルを初代の王として始まりましたイスラエル王国は続くダビデ、その息子ソロモン、その息子レハベアムと続きます。しかし、このレハベアムの時代にイスラエルは南ユダ王国と北イスラエル王国に分裂します。そして、その分裂した北イスラエル王国は紀元前７２３年にアッスリヤに滅ぼされます。同じように南ユダ王国も紀元前５８６年にバビロンに滅ぼされ、イスラエルの民は捕囚民としバビロンに連行されていきます。
しかし、今度はそのバビロンがペルシャによって紀元前５３９年に滅ぼされ、ペルシャのクロス王はバビロンに捕らわれていたイスラエルの民を解放し、故国に帰還することを許し、さらに彼らに必要な資材を与えて、バビロンによって長い間、破壊されたままになっていたエルサレムの神殿再建の許可をも与えたのです。これらのことは既に礼拝メッセージでお話してきましたが、私達がこれらの歴史を通して感じ入ることは、人の歴史というものが確かに神の御手の中にあり、動いているということです。
これらの時代を背景として、私達は今朝、ハガイ書を見てまいります。ハガイ書はその名の通りハガイという預言者が書き記したもので、この預言者ハガイは注意深く「期日」というものを正確に記録する人でありまして、その冒頭でハガイに神の言葉が臨んだのは「ダリヨス王の２年６月」（１章１節）であったと彼は記しています。歴史年表を調べますとこの「ダリヨス王の２年６月」というのは紀元前５２０年のことで、ペルシャのクロス王がイスラエルの民に帰還命令を出したのが紀元前５３６年ですから、ハガイはイスラエルの民が故国に帰還してから１６年後のイスラエル、その中心都市エルサレムにあります神殿について書き記しているのです。
ハガイはこう書いています。4「主の家はこのように荒れはてているのに、あなたがたは、みずから板で張った家に住んでいる時であろうか。5それで今、万軍の主はこう言われる、あなたがたは自分のなすべきことをよく考えるがよい。6あなたがたは多くまいても、取入れは少なく、食べても、飽きることはない。飲んでも、満たされない。着ても、暖まらない。賃銀を得ても、これを破れた袋に入れているようなものである（ハガイ１章４節ー６節）。
このハガイの言葉から想像しますにイスラエルの民はペルシャのクロス王の解放宣言により喜んでイスラエルに帰還し、当初は精力的にエルサレムの神殿再建に取りかかったと思われます（このあたりはネヘミヤ記あたりに詳しく書かれていますが）。しかし、他民族の妨害や攻撃にあい、その再建は頓挫し神殿は長い年月、放置されたままになっていたようです。
そして、それが人間の性（さが）なのでしょう、彼らはやがて神殿の再建よりも己が住む場所を整えることばかりに時間と労力を注ぐようになり、エルサレムの神殿は廃墟のままだったようです。もっと分かりやすく言いますと、彼らは主のために何かをするということよりも、自分のことだけに関心があり、そのことだけに自らの精力を注いでいたのです。
このような現実に対して神様は私達が心にとめるべき、とても興味深いことを語られました。5それで今、万軍の主はこう言われる、あなたがたは自分のなすべきことをよく考えるがよい。6あなたがたは多くまいても、取入れは少なく、食べても、飽きることはない。飲んでも、満たされない。着ても、暖まらない。賃銀を得ても、これを破れた袋に入れているようなものである（ハガイ１章４節ー６節）。
普通で考えますのなら、その全てを注いでいるのですから、その当然の報いとして彼らは豊かになり、その心にも喜びや満足感や達成感というものが生まれてくるでしょう。しかし、不思議なことが彼らの間に起きていました。彼らは多くの種を買い、そのために多くの時間をかけてその種をまくけれども収穫は少なく、食べても飲んでも満たされない。多くの服はあるけれども、それでいて温もることはなく、賃金を得ても、入れたと同時に消えていくというのです。
同じようなことはハガイ２章１６節にも記されています『16あの時には、二十枡の麦の積まれる所に行ったが、わずかに十枡を得、また五十桶をくもうとして、酒ぶねに行ったが、二十桶を得たのみであった。17わたしは立ち枯れと、腐り穂と、ひょうをもってあなたがたと、あなたがたのすべての手のわざを撃った。しかし、あなたがたは、わたしに帰らなかったと主は言われる』（２章１６節ー１７節）。
ここに記されている「あの時」とは神殿が放置されていた時のことを意味していまして、その時には二十枡の麦が手に入るはずであったのに十枡しかなく、五十の桶をくむことができたはずなのに、二十の桶しかあたえられなかったというのです。彼らは神を神とし、神を第一としていなかった時、ぬかりなく自分のために精力を注いでいたにも関わらず、実に不毛な、期待していたようなことが起らない、そんな時を過ごしていたというのです。
皆さん、このようなことを聞きますと心当たりがありませんか。自分達のことだけに全てを注ぎ込んでいるのに、期待するほどの見返りはなく、かえってやればやるほど空回り、さらには心の中には虚しさがある。そうなると益々、あれがないからだ、これが足りないからだと、自分達のためだけにさらに力を注ぐようになる。しかし、やればやるほど「これだけやっているのに！」という徒労感だけがいつも心に残る。
果てには自分がよかれと思ってやってきたことがかえって仇となってしまっている、そもそも自分がしてきたことが、本当に良かったのだろうかというような悲しい問いに立たなければならないことすら私達の人生にはあるのです。なぜこのようなことが起るのか。ハガイはその原因をこう書き記しました。
『7万軍の主はこう言われる、あなたがたは、自分のなすべきことを考えるがよい。8山に登り、木を持ってきて主の家を建てよ。そうすればわたしはこれを喜び、かつ栄光のうちに現れると主は言われる。9あなたがたは多くを望んだが、見よ、それは少なかった。あなたがたが家に持ってきたとき、わたしはそれを吹き払った。これは何ゆえであるかと、万軍の主は言われる。これはわたしの家が荒れはてているのに、あなたがたは、おのおの自分の家の事だけに、忙しくしている。10それゆえ、あなたがたの上の天は露をさし止め、地はその産物をさし止めた。11また、わたしは地にも、山にも、穀物にも、新しい酒にも、油にも、地に生じるものにも、人間にも、家畜にも、手で作るすべての作物にも、ひでりを呼び寄せた」』（ハガイ１章７節ー１１節）。
ここにも同じようなことが書かれています。わたしたちは自分の家の事だけに忙しくしている。忙しく、そのことだけに力を注いでいるのだから、当然、受ける報いは大きいと思う。しかし、その報いは少なく、気がつけば一番大切にすべきことを失ってしまっていることすらある。いったいこれはどういうことなのだろうか。
見落としてはならない言葉がここには記されています「万軍の主は言われる。わたしの家が荒れ果てているのに、あなたがたは、おのおの自分の家の事だけに、忙しくしている。それゆえ、あなたがたの上の天は露をさし止め、地はその産物をさし止めた」
『それゆえ、あなたがたの上の天は露をさし止め、地はその産物をさし止めた』
私達は一生懸命になって自分のために畑を耕し、灌漑用水を作ります。しかしながら、いくら立派な畑や灌漑用水を作っても天来の水がなければ、豊かな大地がなければ何の意味もありません。そのところを差し止めされたら私達がいかに自分のために熱心に汗水流してもどうしようもならんのです。そして、この天来の恵み、大地の恵を私達は今日（こんにち）、神が私達に与えてくださっている「神の祝福」と呼びます。

皆さん、私はこのメッセージを準備しつつ、思わず天を見上げてしまったのです。「ああ、主よ、そうなんですね、祝福はあなたが私にくださるものであって、自分で自分を祝福することはできないのですね」と。実際のところ、もし私達がこのシンプルな真理を知らなければ、私達は大切な一度きりの生涯を無駄にしてしまいます。本来、神様の祝福が天から存分に注がれる時に、自分でそのことを成そうとしているのですから。
このことを知って生きるのと知らずに生きるのとでは私達の生涯に雲泥の差がでてきます。ですから、このような違いが起りうる私達の生涯に対して、今朝、このハガイ書は私達に大切な問いかけをしているのです。それは今、お話した私達の現実について、そのどちらにも『あなたがたは自分のなすべきことをよく考えるがよい』と（１章５節、７節）書かれているということです。
よく巷で「ファイナンシャル・プランニング」という言葉を聞くことがあります。素人には全く分からない自分達のファイナンスについて、老後や子供の学費ということを考慮しながらプランをたてていくものです。専門のファイナンシャル・プランナーと膝をつき合わせて自分達のファイナンスに関する書類を全て机の上に広げて、それらの書類に目を通しながら自分達は将来のためにどうしたらいいのかというアドバイスを受けるということでありましょう。
同じように今日、このハガイ書を通して私達が勧められていることは、私達も主の前に自分のこれまでの人生について、これからの人生について全てを並べてみて、これから、自分はどのように生きていけばいいのかということをよく考えてみなさいということです。私はよく皆さんに「自分で考え、自分で決めること」の大切さをお話しさせていただきますが「自ら考え、自ら決める」ということは神様が私達に対して最大のリスペクトを与えてくださっていることではないかと思うのです。イエス・キリストもかつてこういう譬え話をしました。
28あなたがたのうちで、だれかが邸宅を建てようと思うなら、それを仕上げるのに足りるだけの金を持っているかどうかを見るため、まず、すわってその費用を計算しないだろうか。29そうしないと、土台をすえただけで完成することができず、見ているみんなの人が、30『あの人は建てかけたが、仕上げができなかった』と言ってあざ笑うようになろう。31また、どんな王でも、ほかの王と戦いを交えるために出て行く場合には、まず座して、こちらの一万人をもって、二万人を率いて向かって来る敵に対抗できるかどうか、考えてみないだろうか。32もし自分の力にあまれば、敵がまだ遠くにいるうちに、使者を送って、和を求めるであろう。（ルカ１４章２８節‐３２節）
イエス・キリストは大工でした。大工は今もそうであるように、昔もお客との間に見積もりをたてて仕事をしたことでしょう。材料の値、人件費、そして、そこから得ることができる利益を考えたことでしょう。それらを全て一度、テーブルの上に出して計算することがイエス様の日常だったことでしょう。一つの軍隊の長はその手の中に何千人という男達の命が託されています。浅い考え、下手な作戦で失うものはかけがえのない兵士の命です。ですから戦略を練るということはまさしく周到になされたことでしょう。
神様が天から注いでくださる祝福について一つ、こう考えましょう。私はこれからも自分の人生に必要な水をホースを引っ張ってきて、毎日苦労しながら汗水流しながら、自らの庭に水を蒔き続けるのだろうか。水道代を気にして、水が枯渇する時もあるでしょう。それとも神に仕え、神と共に歩み、神を第一として歩んでいく。そして天から注がれるふんだんの命の水を全身に浴びて、その生涯歩み続けるのか。これらを全てを自分の前に持ち出して、よくよく考えてみてください、そろばんをはじいてみてください。そのことにかかる経費を考えてみてください。
皆さん、もう一度。ご自身の人生を思い起こしてください。皆さんの生涯に先に読んだようなことがありませんでしたか。5それで今、万軍の主はこう言われる、あなたがたは自分のなすべきことをよく考えるがよい。6あなたがたは多くまいても、取入れは少なく、食べても、飽きることはない。飲んでも、満たされない。着ても、暖まらない。賃銀を得ても、これを破れた袋に入れているようなものである（ハガイ１章４節ー６節）。
神様は私達の思いと決断に強引に介入されません。私達は自分で考え、自分で決め、その決断に自分で責任をもつのです。ですから「私が私を祝福するのではない。神様が私を祝福するのだ」ということをもう一度、踏まえて、ご自身の人生です、これからのご自身の人生を考えてみてください。
さて、それではイスラエルの民はこの主の言葉を聞いて、何を決断したのでしょうか。12そこで、シャルテルの子ゼルバベルとヨザダクの子、大祭司ヨシュアおよび残りのすべての民は、その神、主の声と、その神、主のつかわされた預言者ハガイの言葉とに聞きしたがい、そして民は、主の前に恐れかしこんだ。13時に、主の使者ハガイは主の命令により、民に告げて言った、「わたしはあなたがたと共にいると主は言われる」。14そして主は、シャルテルの子、ユダの総督ゼルバベルの心と、ヨザダクの子、
大祭司ヨシュアの心、および残りのすべての民の心を、振り動かされたので、彼らは来て、その神、万軍の主の家の作業にとりかかった。15これは六月二十四日のことであった（ハガイ１章１２節‐１５節）。
彼らはハガイの言葉のとおり、まさしく考えたのでしょうね。そして、彼らが下した決断は、主の言葉に聞き従うということでした。主の前に恐れかしこみ、「わたしはあなたがたと共にいる」と言われる主の言葉により、リーダーと民の心は揺り動かされたので、彼らは主の家の作業にとりかかったのです。
18あなたがたはこの日より後、すなわち、九月二十四日よりの事を思うがよい。また主の宮の基をすえた日から後の事を心にとめるがよい。19種はなお、納屋にあるか。ぶどうの木、いちじくの木、ざくろの木、オリブの木もまだ実を結ばない。しかし、わたしはこの日から、あなたがたに恵みを与える」（ハガイ２章１８節‐１９節）
ここには「この日より後」という言葉が１８節に、そして「わたしはこの日から」と言う言葉が１９節にもあります。「この日」とは「神の神殿を建て始めよう」とした日であり、すなわち自分達のことよりも「神様のことを第一に考えていこう」と決断した日です。その日から何かが変わるというのです。そうです、その日から神様は彼らに恵を与えるというのです。
『7わたしはまた万国民を震う。万国民の財宝は、はいって来て、わたしは栄光をこの家に満たすと、万軍の主は言われる。8銀はわたしのもの、金もわたしのものであると、万軍の主は言われる。9主の家の後の栄光は、前の栄光よりも大きいと、万軍の主は言われる。わたしはこの所に繁栄を与えると、万軍の主は言われる』万軍の主というのは軍勢の長のことです。この全ての権威をもっておられるお方が前よりももっと大きな繁栄と栄光をこの宮、この家に、あなたたちの上に与えると約束してくださるのです。
このハガイ書の中で神が私達に語りかけておられるのは、ハガイが「この日」、すなわち、神を第一にしていくと決断した日、神様は彼らの「栄光と繁栄」を約束されたということです。「栄光と繁栄」とはすなわち、今日、お話しています「神様の祝福」です。天の扉が開かれ、その日から神様は私達にもふんだんに祝福を注いでくださるという約束です。
いつもお話します。私達の人生は後にも先にも一度きりのものです。己の庭だけに水を蒔くこと、それだけに精力を注ぎ一喜一憂するような日々を送るのではなくて、私達の生涯にこの天地万物を支配しておられるお方に関与していただき、自らの小さな庭のみならず、私達を取り巻く地域一帯、いいえ、自分の住む国をも越えて私達を祝福してくださるという、そのような人生を私達も主にあって送らせていただこうではありませんか。これ以上のライフ・プランニングはどこを探してもないのですから。そして、そのことはまさしく私達の人生を神様に全く明け渡して神を第一として生きていくことです。イエス・キリストがあのマタイ６章で言われた言葉こそが、その本質をいい得ているでしょう。
『まず神の国と神の義とを求めなさい。そうすれば、これらのものは、すべて添えて与えられるであろう』（マタイ６章３３節）。今日、この件について、よくよく再考される方達が起こされますことを、そしてその方達が自分で自分を祝福しようという不毛の生涯を送るのではなくて、天来の祝福に満たされて生きる生涯を歩まれることを心から願ってやみません。お祈りしましょう。
Haggai: Reconsidering the current situation

For
the last one year, under the theme of “Focusing not on a part but on overall
picture”, we have been studying one Old Testament book each Sunday. There are
three books left now including this Haggai we study today. As I have repeatedly reminded you, it is very
important to understand these books in the context of background history. I hope that by this time you agree the
importance of such background.
Starting with
Saul, the first king, the Israel kingdom continued with David, Solomon, and
Rehoboam. But, in the time of Rehoboam, Israel was
divided into South Judah and North Israel. This divided North Israel kingdom was destroyed in
723 BC by Assyria. Similarly, South Judah
kingdom was destroyed in 586 BC by Babylon, and the people of Israel was sent
to Babylonian exile.
But
this Babylon was destroyed in 539 BC by Persia, the Cyrus king of Persia
released Israelite people from exile, allowed them to return to their homeland
and also provided necessary materials to rebuild the long-abandoned temple in
Jerusalem. As I have pointed out many times throughout
before, we realize as we study these historical events that human history has always
been in the hands of God.
This
morning, we will study the book of Haggai. This book of Haggai was written by a prophet Haggai.
He recorded dates very carefully. He said that the word of the Lord came to him “1In the second year of King
Darius, on the first day of the sixth month.” (Chapter 1, verse 1) According to historical
records, this “Second year of King Darius” was 520 BC. Since Cyrus king of
Persia commanded the people of Israel to return to home land in 536 BC, this
Haggai was talking about the Lord’s temple in Jerusalem 16 years after the
Israelite people returned to homeland.
Haggai wrote: 4“Is it a time for you yourselves to be living
in your paneled houses, while this house [of the Lord] remains a ruin?” 5Now this is what the LORD Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your
ways. 6You have planted much, but have harvested
little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill.
You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a
purse with holes in it.” (Haggai 1:4-6)
This
book of Haggai tells us that when the people of Israel retuned to Israel under
proclamation by Cyrus king of Persia, they started rebuilding the Lord’s temple
with enthusiasm at least at first. (That is also described in details in the
book of Nehemiah). But, the rebuilding was
interrupted by attacks from other nations and the reconstruction was put on hold
for a long time.
Soon
afterwards, people of Israel started to spend time and labor more on building
up their own houses while the temple in Jerusalem remained in ruins. One could say that their main concern became
rebuilding their own living conditions rather than doing anything for the LORD.
In this background, God said these
words: 5Now this is what the LORD Almighty says:
“Give careful thought to your ways. 6You have planted much, but have harvested
little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill.
You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a
purse with holes in it.” (Haggai 1:5-6)
Since
the people have devoted much effort into rebuilding their living condition,
they naturally expected to be filled with sense of accomplishment and
satisfaction. But, strange things were happening. They have purchased seed and planted
much, but they harvested little. They ate and drank, but were not filled. They
put on clothes, but were not warm. They earned wages, but they lost them as if
there were holes in the purse.
We can find similar description in Haggai 2:16. 16When anyone
came to a heap of twenty measures, there were only ten. When anyone went to a
wine vat to draw fifty measures, there were only twenty. 17I struck
all the work of your hands with blight, mildew and hail, yet you did not turn
to me,’ declares the LORD. (Haggai 2:16-17)
This talks about the time the Lord’s temple was left in
ruins. At that time, heap of twenty measures of wheat produced only ten, and
fifty vats of wine produced only twenty. They were working hard on their own, but they had
turned their back to God. This produced less harvest, less than what they had
expected.
Don’t
we all have experienced such time? When we work so hard to feed only ourselves,
the return is much less than what we expected, and all the effort seems to be
wasted in fruitless endeavor. When the return is less, we
try even harder to make up for that, thinking only about ourselves even more. But, all this effort results in the
empty feeling of fatigue.
Perhaps
what we meant good had turned out to be wrong. We begin to question our
original intension. We begin to doubt ourselves. Such is our life in this world. Why does this happen to us? Haggai
pointed out the reason for this:
7This is what the LORD Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your
ways. 8Go up into the
mountains and bring down timber and build the house, so that I may take
pleasure in it and be honored,” says the LORD. 9“You expected
much, but see, it turned out to be little. What you brought home, I blew away.
Why?” declares the LORD Almighty. “Because of my house, which remains a ruin,
while each of you is busy with his own house. 10Therefore,
because of you the heavens have withheld their dew and the earth its crops. 11I called for a
drought on the fields and the mountains, on the grain, the new wine, the oil
and whatever the ground produces, on men and cattle, and on the labor of your
hands.” (Haggai 1:7-11)
This talks about a similar
thing. We are busy trying to build our own house. We put so much effort into it, and naturally expect
a fair return. But there is very little reward. Then we
realize that we had lost sight of the most important thing in life. What is happening?
Please listen to what the
Bible says here: “Why? Declared the LORD Almighty.
“Because of my house, which remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with his
own house. Therefore, because of you the heavens have withheld their dew and
the earth its crops.”
“Therefore, because of you the heavens have
withheld their dew and the earth its crops.”
We could cultivate our
fields and irrigate them all we can. But however good the fields
might be, if there is not enough water from heaven enriching the soil, it does
not produce any harvest. Without such blessing from
heaven, return would be very poor, however hard we work with sweat. What we need is blessing from heaven,
blessed land, namely, we need blessing from God.
We often say “God bless
you.” Have you noticed who the subject of this
sentence is?
The subject is GOD. God is
the one who blesses us. We hear the expression “God bless you.” But, we have
never heard anyone saying “You bless yourself” or “I bless myself.” No, we do
not hear such expression. But, aren’t we living our life hoping such expressions
do produce results? Namely, aren’t we trying to bless ourselves each day? Some
of you might agree with me on this point.
Everyone here in the
congregation, please remember that all of the blessing is poured by God to us. If
there is a gate in heaven through which our blessing comes, that gate is
controlled not by us but by God. We cannot force it open by ourselves. That is
why although these people planted, they got poor harvest, and although they
fed, they were never filled, and although they drink, they were still thirsty.
While
I was preparing this message, I had to look up to heaven and say: Lord, it is
true. Blessing is granted by you only. We cannot produce blessing ourselves. We
must realize this simple truth. Otherwise, we will waste away our only chance
on this earth. Blessing comes only from GOD. But, we are attempting in vain to
force such blessing to come to us.
Knowing
or not knowing this simple reality would make the world of difference in our
life. This is why the question this book of Haggai is imposing to us this
morning is very important. It says “Give careful
thought to your ways.” (15:7) We must carefully
re-evaluate our life.
We often hear about
“financial planning”. It talks about making a plan for our retirement and
preparing college tuition for children, for which we often seek help. We engage
a professional financial planner. We spread out all document about our finance
on the table, and consult the financial planner on the right course of action
on our future financial needs.
The Book of Haggai we are
studying this morning is telling us that we too must spread out all the facts
about our own life in front of God, and must consider carefully on how we
should live our life from today on. It is important that we should think and
decide ourselves. God has shown us the greatest respect to us by granting us
ability to think and decide our course of action. Jesus Christ also talked
about this parable.
28“Suppose one of you wants
to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to
see if he has enough money to complete it? 29For if he lays the
foundation and is not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule
him, 30saying, ‘This fellow began to build and was not able to
finish.’ 31“Or suppose a king is
about to go to war against another king. Will he not first sit down and
consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming
against him with twenty thousand? 32If he is not able, he will send
a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of
peace. (Luke
14:28-32)
Jesus Christ was a
carpenter. Like a carpenter of today, he must have consulted with customers on
estimation of the work. He must have considered material cost, labor cost, and
also profit that he can earn from the work. It was his job to lay out all of
this information on the table to come up with the estimation. Military leaders
are in charge of life of thousands of men under their command. Careless
planning or poor strategy would result in loss of solders’ life. That is why
strategies were planned with the greatest care.
As we consider blessing
from God in heaven, let’s ask ourselves: Are we going to work hard, toiling
ourselves to water the garden of our own life each day? There could be time
when the water cost is too much for us to continue. Or, are we going to obey
God, walk with God, placing God first in our life? And, are we going to enjoy
the blessing of water of life as we live out our life? Each of us need to bring
out everything into open and consider options carefully, and calculate the
cost.
Everyone, please re-view your own
life. Have you made the wrong decision as these people mentioned in the Bible? 5Now this is what the LORD Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your
ways. 6You have planted much, but have harvested
little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill.
You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a
purse with holes in it.” (Haggai 1:4-6)
God never forces his will
and decision upon us. We are expected to think on our own, make our own
decision, and be responsible for it. So, please remember again that “I do not
bless myself. But rather God blesses us” On that understanding, please consider
your own life from now on.
What did the people of Israel decide
when they heard these words from God? 12Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel,
Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the whole remnant of the people
obeyed the voice of the LORD their God and the message of the prophet Haggai,
because the LORD their God had sent him. And the people feared the LORD. 13Then Haggai,
the LORD’S messenger, gave this message of the LORD to the people: “I am with
you,” declares the LORD. 14So the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel,
governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest,
and the spirit of the whole remnant of the people. They came and began to work
on the house of the LORD Almighty, their God, 15on the twenty-fourth
day of the sixth month in the second year of King Darius. (Haggai
1:12-15)
As Haggai told them, they contemplated
and reached their own decision which was to obey the words of God. They humbled
themselves in front of God, who said “I am with you.” The people and the
leaders were moved by these words and resumed the work on reconstructing the
house of the Lord.
18‘From this day
on, from this twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, give careful
thought to the day when the foundation of the LORD’S temple was laid. Give
careful thought: 19Is there yet
any seed left in the barn? Until now, the vine and the fig tree, the
pomegranate and the olive tree have not borne fruit. “‘From this
day on I will bless you.’” (Haggai 2:18-19)
The words “from this day on” are found
in verse 18 and the words “From this day on I will bless you” are found in
Verse 19. “This day” points to the day
when they resumed building the house of the Lord, namely the day they decided
to put God above anything else. Something was to change from that day on. Yes,
God was to bless them from that day on.
7I will shake
all nations, and the desired of all nations will come, and I will fill this
house with glory,’ says the LORD Almighty. 8‘The silver is mine and the gold is
mine,’ declares the LORD Almighty. 9‘The glory of this present house
will be greater than the glory of the former house,’ says the LORD Almighty.
‘And in this place I will grant peace,’ declares the LORD Almighty.” (Haggai
2:7-9) “The LORD Almighty” is the commander in chief. This LORD Almighty
promised that greater prosperity and peace will be given to the temple and this
house. He said this blessing will be granted on them.
What God is telling us in this Book of Haggai is that
on the very day, “this day” when the people decided to put God above
everything, God promised “glory and peace”. “Glory and peace” is the blessing from God.
The gate of heaven is opened, and abundant blessing is to be poured upon us
from that day on.
As I have reminded you many times before, we live but only once
on this earth. Let us not be preoccupied in watering our own yard by ourselves day
in and day out. Let us invite God, the one who rules heaven and earth, to come
into our life so that not only He blesses our own tiny yard but our country and
beyond. Let us live such life under God. There is no better life planning. And
that implies that we let God control our daily life, keeping God above all, at
the center of our life. About this, Jesus Christ said these words in Matthew
Chapter 6.
33But
seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be
given to you as well. (Matthew 6:33) I hope you will
carefully re-consider your life today. I hope that you will not spend your life
trying to bless yourselves in fruitless attempt, but you will enjoy life that
is filled with blessing from God. Let
us pray.

１）ハガイ１章４節から６節を読みましょう。ここには自分のために力を注いでいる者の姿がありますが、彼らは自分が望むような益にあずかれずにいる様が描かれています。あなたはこのような「空回り」や「徒労」を感じたことがありませんか。
２）なぜ上記のようなことになったのでしょうか。続くハガイ１章７節から１１節を読んでみましょう。天から降る露、収穫のためになされる地中のはたらきは人間の努力でまかなえるものですか。
３）「祝福」はどこからきますか。あなたは自分で自分を祝福しようとしていませんか。（自分で天から露を降らせ、地中のはたらきにまで関与しようとしていませんか）。
４）上記の現実に対してハガイは『あなたがたは自分のなすべきことをよく考えるがよい』（１章５節、７節）と私達に語りかけています。神様が私達に私達自身が自分の人生について考える猶予を与えてくださっていることは、何を意味しますか。
５）ルカ１４章２８節‐３２節を読みましょう。今日のハガイ書をふまえてこのところに書かれている『計算をしないだろうか』（２８節）や『考えてみないだろうか』（３１節）という言葉は私達に何を促していますか。
６）イエス・キリストが言われた『まず神の国と神の義とを求めなさい。そうすれば、これらのものは、すべて添えて与えられるであろう』（マタイ６章３３節）という言葉を私達は実生活の中で具体的にどのように実現することができるでしょうか。
