Now is the time to sit and think
Jan 3, 2021

On January 5 last year, we took this picture at our church. At that time, not a single person was thinking about today. We learned that one year is more than long enough to completely change the world and our lives. We had been living with Corona in 2020 and ended the year with Corona.

Our sincere hope is that this corona pandemic will end as soon as possible in 2021. But so far, no one can point out with certainty when that day will be.

When the corona pandemic ends, there will be companies that will downsize their office space. Some companies may not even have a physical office anymore.

There will be companies that will limit their workdays to three days a week. Business owners will think and ask when starting new businesses. Will this business be able to withstand another outbreak of infectious disease? The corona virus will also have a great impact on the future ministry of our church.

Corona has brought to a head the scientists studying infectious diseases and the doctors who are on the front lines seeing patients. Politicians, school teachers, restaurant owners, and pastors learned that there are problems beyond our control. We saw what we though to be normal life fall apart.

In addition, a lot has happened in the United States in the last year. People who had time to stay at home spent much of their day on the Internet and took in a wide variety of information.

The world was a mixture of good and evil, and the minds of many people were controlled by the information. May times people did not control information, but the information controlled the people. Believers gave more attention to words online than to the words of God.

With all of these effects of the past year intact, we entered the new year with a continued sense of anxiety and mixed feelings.

Here is a bamboo. A bamboo has nodes. It is said that the nodes give strength to the bamboo. As you know, the inside of a bamboo is hollow. However, these nodes give the bamboo more strength. It is said that there is research among engineers who study bamboo to create structures with maximum strength from minimum materials. This is how man is learning from God’s creation, bamboo.

In Japanese, there is a phrase, “Jinsei no fushime” or life’s node, which signifies a milestone in our lives. If we think about the last year, this year could be a node, and a milestone in our lives. These milestones make our lives stronger in Christ.

As we begin a new year, I would like to begin by looking at two verses. The first one is Luke 14:28-30.

28 “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? 29 For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, 30 saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.’

If we look at this parable from a modern perspective, it goes like this. If you were to buy a piece of land and build a house on it, wouldn’t you consider whether the house could be built with $100,000 on hand?

Nowadays, we have loans, but back then, people thought about what kind of house they could build with the money they had. Otherwise, the foundation alone would have used up all the money they had, and they would have been the laughing stock of the people. This is a very realistic parable for Jesus, who was a carpenter.

Thinking of this tower as our home, I would like to ask the following questions. Do I have enough to build up my own home? I’m not talking about a building or a budget, I’m talking about your family.

I would like to ask you all a question. Do you have enough to keep you and your spouse together for the rest of your life? What I’m referring to here is not your retirement fund, but the unshakable foundation that you and your spouse will need to keep going for the rest of your life.

I would like to ask you parents. Do you have enough to raise your own children in the days to come? I’m not talking about the tuition of your children’s education here, but rather, do you have a set of guidelines that you can live by in this tough world that never moves? Is the world we face really something we can overcome by passing on our “life lessons” to our children?

Here is the second parable. Let’s read Luke 14:31-32.

31 “Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won’t he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32 If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. 33 In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples.

The difference between this parable and the previous one is that the previous one was about a private tower, but this one is about a king’s decision that affects 10,000 soldier’s lives. The king’s decision will determine whether 10,000 people will live or die.

Recently, I saw a drama where the US president was conducting a secret operation in the Middle East, and one of the US soldiers was killed. There was a scene where the president was grieved by this and took the time to write a letter to the family.

I’m sure there are people among you who are self-employed or who lead groups as leaders, and the lives of their families are on your shoulders.

And the same goes for the church. When I was in a church on a remote island near Okinawa, typhoons came every week during the summer and fall. I was inside the building until the typhoon passed. When I went outdoors after the typhoon passed, I often saw a completely different scene.

Corona will pass away one day. No one can point out now what our church will look like and be like when it does. What should we do now, as we face the world after the storm that has passed?

Jesus once said, 39 “Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into a pit? (Luke 6:39). If our eyes are blind we may fall into a pit. And it is the same with those who have put their trust in us. What are we thinking now to protect these beloved ones, for their blessing?

The two parables above have something in common.

28 Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? (Luke 14:28)

31 “Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won’t he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? (Luke 14:31)

Why don’t you sit down and do the math? Will you not first sit down and consider whether you can stand against the enemy with ten thousand?

Dear Brothers and sisters, we are now at the foot of the mountain as we reach the summit of 2021. Are you sitting down, i.e., sitting back, taking time to pray and think about what you, your family, your company and your church should be doing in the future? Are you inclining your ear to listen to what the Bible commands you to do, instead of your own ideas?

Jesus told this famous parable which may be familiar to you.

24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” 28 When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, 29 because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.

There are two houses here, one built on the rock and one built on the sand. Yes, this parable is connected to the previous parable.

This man must have thought long and hard about whether to build his house on a rock or on sand. He must have sat down and thought about it. To build on a rock is difficult and costly. Building on sand is not difficult, and the expense is less. But, he sat and thought. What will happen to my house when the rains come, the floods come, and the wind blows?

The rains, the floods, and the winds will surely come one day. It will come to a house built on rock and to a house built on sand. What will happen to my house then? Corona has fallen on all of us, and it is still going strong. What are you going to do about it?

Jesus said.

24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock (Matthew 7:24,25).

Dear brothers and sisters, now is the time to sit down, Bible in hand, and think about what is to come. Do you know what is essential for sitting and thinking? The place where you are sitting must not move. Sit in a place that does not move and think carefully about the future.

In this sense, the corona virus has given us that opportunity. If we don’t miss this opportunity, this virus will have taught us something important. Just as a node strengthens a bamboo, let us add a node to our lives. Let’s make this a milestone year in our life.

Brothers and sisters, this is the commemorative photo of the first service of this New Year. Our year 2021 begins here. This is the beginning of the year 2021 for us, the San Diego Japanese Christian Church.

When I look at this picture, my soul trembles before the Lord. My heart is on fire. When corona is lifted, I am looking forward to sitting in one place with all of you again, using the Bible as a guideline, talking about the path we should take, and letting us see the work of the Lord. Let us pray.
