２００２年、イエス・キリストが誕生したベツレヘムの聖誕教会が人質と共にパレスチナ人によって占拠されイスラエル軍が教会に侵攻するという緊迫した時がありました。その戦火の最中、ある日本人カップルが何も知らずにベツレヘムの検問所から徒歩でその聖誕教会にむかって歩いているところを報道陣によって保護されたというニュースをＣＮＮやＢＢＣが世界に流しました。彼らはガイドブックを読むことに夢中で外出禁止令が出て無人となっている町の様子にも気がつかなかったようです。戦場に突然、現われた観光客にパレスチナ住民も困惑を隠さなかったといいます。彼らはベツレヘムで起きていることを何も知らず、危うく命を落とすところだったのです。「知らない」ということが時に致命的なことにつながるのです。やはり「事前に知っておくべき」ことというものは私達のまわりにあるのです。
同じことが私達の人生にもいえます。私達の人生は長い旅です。そして、それは一度限りの旅です。その旅はリハーサルはなく、毎日が本番であり、与えられている時間も限られていますので、私達が先人の言葉に耳を傾けることは有益なことだと思います。三時間、道に迷うならまだしも、先人に聞いておけば避けることができたのに、それを怠ったゆえにボタンの掛け違いのように、人生が願っていない、思いがけないものとなってしまった、もう今では取り返しがつかないと後悔すること、このようなことはできるだけ避けたいものです。

伝道の書：山頂から叫ぶ声 ２０１２年８月１２日
昨年、イスラエルに行かせていただきました時、ツアーではありませんでしたので、現地に行く前に自分よりも先にイスラエルを訪ねた人達の旅行記やガイドブックをよく読みました。あれこれ読んでいますとエルサレムという町の輪郭がだいたい頭に入ります。どの辺りにあの史跡があり、こちら側にはこの史跡があり、この四つ角には美味しいパン屋があるということまでも行く前から頭にはいります。
もしエルサレムに一年間住む予定でしたら、そんなに調べなくても時間をかけて自分の足で現地を歩けばいいでしょう。しかし、旅行は限られた時間の中でなされるものですので、やはり押さえておくべき場所を事前にある程度知っておくことは時間的にも予算的にもとても大切なことでした。
これらを怠り、現地に入りますとどうしても時間をロスし、その日にすべきことができなくなってしまいます。知っておけば避けられる問題というものはけっこうあるものです。時間のロスならまだしも、最悪の場合、命の危険にさらされることさえあります。

私達の前に今日、開かれています「伝道の書」はイスラエル三代目の王、ソロモンが記したものです。この書には「神」という言葉が一度も出てこず、新約聖書にも一度も引用されていないとても不思議な書です。既にこの伝道の書は昨年、シリーズでお話しておりますので細かいことには触れませんので幾つかのポイントを今日はお話します。まず最初から結論をお話しします。この伝道の書の結論はこの書の最後にこのように記されています。
1あなたの若い日に、あなたの造り主を覚えよ。悪しき日がきたり、年が寄って、「わたしにはなんの楽しみもない」と言うようにならない前に、2また日や光や、月や星の暗くならない前に、雨の後にまた雲が帰らないうちに、そのようにせよ。伝道の書 １２章１節－２節
ソロモンは自分の人生を歩み、年をとってから「自分の生涯はなんとつまらないものだったのか」ということがないように「あなたの造り主を覚えよ」と言うのです。そして、そのことは早ければ早いほうがいい。若ければ若い方がいいとソロモンは言うのです。
皆さんの中には事業を始めよう準備をしてい方がいるかもしれません。有名になりたいという人がいるかもしれません。とにかく人生、楽しく愉快に生きようと願っている方や、素敵な恋をしたいと思っている方もいるかもしれません。
今日、お話しますソロモンはそんなことを全て実現した人間なのです。実際、実現といいましても彼の場合、桁違いの実現でありまして、彼は私達が求めているものをことごとく手に入れ尽くした人なのです。言うなれば、彼は私達が「あそこにさえ到達すれば」「あれさえあれば」と目指しているその山の頂（いただき）に立った人であり、その頂からそこに立って、感じたことを記しているのです。その彼の正直な実感というものがこの伝道の書には記されているのです。このような先人の言葉に耳を傾けることは私達にとってとても有益なことです。
今日はそんな彼の書いた伝道の書を一度でお話しするわけですが、先週、お話しました箴言と共にこの書は私達にも理解でき、おそらく共感できる書だと思いますので、どうぞあとでゆっくり全体を読んでみてください。そこで今日は伝道の書１章１節から１１節までシンプルに三つのことをみていきたいと思います。まず、聖書を読みましょう。
1ダビデの子、エルサレムの王である伝道者の言葉。2伝道者は言う、空の空、空の空、いっさいは空である。3日の下で人が労するすべての労苦は、その身になんの益があるか。4世は去り、世はきたる。しかし地は永遠に変らない。5日はいで、日は没し、その出た所に急ぎ行く。6風は南に吹き、また転じて、北に向かい、めぐりにめぐって、またそのめぐる所に帰る。7川はみな、海に流れ入る、しかし海は満ちることがない。川はその出てきた所にまた帰って行く。8すべての事は人をうみ疲れさせる、人はこれを言いつくすことができない。目は見ることに飽きることがなく、耳は聞くことに満足することがない。9先にあったことは、また後にもある、先になされた事は、また後にもなされる。日の下には新しいものはない。10「見よ、これは新しいものだ」と言われるものがあるか、それはわれわれの前にあった世々に、すでにあったものである。11前の者のことは覚えられることがない、また、きたるべき後の者のことも、後に起る者はこれを覚えることがない。
どう考えても京都の龍安寺にある枯山水の庭で座禅をしている僧侶の言葉のようです。しかしながら、間違いなくこれは日本人の言葉ではなく、今から３０００年も昔を生きたイスラエルの王の言葉なのです。以下、このソロモンの言葉から三つの空しさについてお話します。まず最初に「意味が分からない空しさ」ということをみていきましょう
意味が分からない空しさ
2伝道者は言う、空の空、空の空、いっさいは空である。3日の下で人が労するすべての労苦は、その身になんの益があるか。
ソロモンは言いました「日の下で人が労するすべての労苦は、その身になんの益があるのか」。それは言い方を変えれば「私達の労苦に何か意味があるのか」ということです。
ある人が言いました。「俺が死んでも世界は変わらない。俺が今日、死んでも明日は俺のデスクには誰かが座り、俺がしていた仕事をこなしていく。会社は俺がいなくなっても何の支障もない」。何事もなかったように朝はやってき、何事もなかったように陽は暮れる、今日も明日も・・・。
どんなに一世を風靡した人も束の間、この世界に存在し、やがていなくなり、人の記憶から失われていきます。それが私達の宿命です。やがて自分はいなくなる。やがて誰もが自分のことを忘れていく。そんな自分が日々、なしていく労苦に何の意味があるのか。
今の時代を言い表すのなら、それは「意味を喪失した時代」ということができましょう。私達は自分がしていることに意味を見出せないと手や足が止まります。そして、ある者は喜びを失い、ある者は働くことや生きることすら億劫になります。
そもそも「このことの意味は何か」などということは人間だけが考えることです。最近、我が家の玄関先にかけてある植木鉢の中に山鳩が卵を産みまして、二匹の雛が孵りました。その蜂は私達の目と鼻の先にありますのでういつも鳩と目を合わせながら家に入ります。とても楽しい出産と育児の現場を観察させていただきました。しかしあの親鳩は「子が与えられた意味とか、子を育てる意味」などは考えていません。ただ本能に従い、子を養い育てているのです。
しかし、人は意味を考えます。意味を見出さずに何かをし続けることは私達には苦痛なのです。意味を見出せない時、私達はその心の中に空しさを感じるのです。それは心の中に埋め合わせることができたらと願っている空洞を埋めることができない空しさです。ソロモンは３０００年前にこの人間の心を知り、そのところから脱却する道として語っているのが先ほどの言葉なのです。

それがどこであったか覚えていません。私がまだ４，５歳の時だったかと思います。母と孤児院を訪ねたことがあります。私達がその施設に入ると私と同じ年頃の子供たちが集まってきて母に「誰のお母さん？誰のお母さん？」と聞くのです。あの時のことを忘れることができません。私は心の中で「僕のお母さんだ！」と言っていました。
その子達がどんな背景でその施設に入ったのか知りません。しかし、子供達の心の中に自分の親を切に求める思いがあったのだということをこの年になって思います時に心が締めつけられます。子供たちは自分の親は誰なのかということを知りたいのです。
私達は子を授かったといいます。人の誕生や人の命とは私達の願いや思いを超えたところにあるからです。実際に、私達がこの世に生まれてきた原因は親だけによるのではないのです。子も親も互いを選ぶことすらできないのです。一人の子が生まれる、それは明らかに親の思いをはるかに超えていることなのです。
皆さんの中にはゴルフが好きな方がいると思います。私ははゴルフをしないのでよく分かりませんが、楽しいらしいですね。細かいルールがあり、複雑な駆け引きがあるようですが、基本的にはとてもシンプルなスポーツのように思われます。すなわち、最初の一打を打つ場所があり、そこで打ち放ったボールの元に歩いて行き、そのところでまたそのボールを打ち、最終的にどれだけ少ない打数でそのボールを穴に入れられるかということを競うスポーツだからです。
ゴルフをしたことがないといいましたが、実は一度、島田先生の家に泊めていただいた時、ゴルフが好きな島田先生から「打ちっぱなしに行きましょう」と誘われて生まれてはじめてクラブを握りました。野球はピッチャーが投げてくる速球や変化球を打つのですから球に当たらないこともありますが、ゴルフは置かれているボールを打つのだから楽勝と思っておりました・・・。でもすぐにそんな自分が愚かであったということが分かりました。当たらない、当たらない、何度も空振りをしました。そして、当たってもまっすぐ飛ばない。飛ばない、あらためてゴルフの難しさを知りました。
その時のことを思い起こしながら、こんなことを考えてみました。そう、自分がもしゴルフボールだったらと思ったのです。ゴルフボールはほとんど同じ色で、皆が球形であり、その辺に転がっていても誰も目に止めません。足裏マッサージに使われたり、犬のおもちゃにされてしまうこともあります。ガレージに転がってしまい、人目につかない洗濯機の下で埃をかぶって余生を送ることもあるかもしれません。
しかし、そのゴルフボールも一度、ティーイングラウンド（第一打を打つ地点）にあるピンの上に置かれるのなら、その瞬間にボールの存在理由が明らかになるのです。すなわち、打たれて前方に飛び、一打でも少なくホールに入るということです。そのただ一つのことを成就するために多くの人間がボールを改良し、クラブを改良し、芝生を整備し、その成り行きを見たいがためにギャラリーという人達がぞろぞろと一つのボールの行方を追いかけるのです。
私達も全く同じです。私達がその最初について、すなわち私達に命を与えてくださった造り主を知ることにより、私達は生まれてきた理由を知ることができるようになり、そのことにより後に続く人生において成すべき事柄の理由を見出すことができるのです。
ヨハネによる福音書１５章１６節にはこう書かれています「あなたがたがわたしを選んだのではない。わたしがあなたがたを選んだのである。そして、あなたがたを立てた。それは、あなたがたが行って実をむすび、その実がいつまでも残るためであり、また、あなたがたがわたしの名によって父に求めるものはなんでも、父が与えて下さるためである」
このイエス・キリストの言葉は誰も自分で選んでこの世界に産声を上げたのではないと言っています。父母が私達を選んだのではないのです。しかし、聖書は言います。「わたしがあなたを選んだ」と。そして、その選びの理由もここには書かれています「それはあなたがたが行って実をむすび、その実がいつまでも残るためである」と。この始まりを私達が知る時におのずと私達はその先にどんな実を結ぶのかということが分かってくるのです。
二つ目の事をお話します。それは「行き着くところを知らない空しさ」ということです。

4世は去り、世はきたる。しかし地は永遠に変らない。5日はいで、日は没し、その出た所に急ぎ行く。6風は南に吹き、また転じて、北に向かい、めぐりにめぐって、またそのめぐる所に帰る。7川はみな、海に流れ入る、しかし海は満ちることがない。川はその出てきた所にまた帰って行く。8すべての事は人をうみ疲れさせる、人はこれを言いつくすことができない。
これらの言葉は東洋思想である輪廻を語っているようです。全てのことは巡り巡って、またもとのところに帰ってくるということです。確かに私達が日や川を見ているとそこには循環があります。日は沈み、日はのぼる、この連続です。川は流れ、海に行き、また雨となり川に戻ってくる。ソロモンはその中に自分もいるということを思った時に、全てのことはただ人をうみ疲れさせるのだと言ったのです。それは空しいのだと言ったのです。なぜか。なぜなら自分がどこを向いて、どこに向かっているのかということが全く分からないからです。
先ほどのゴルフで言いますのなら、ボールを好きなところに打っていいというのであるのなら、ゴルフは何も楽しくありません。ゴルフには始まりがあって、最後にホールがあるから、その最初のショットと最後のカップインの間を人は楽しみ、多くの人がその楽しみに魅了されるのです。
わたしたちの空しさはその最初を知らないことと、その最後を知らないところからきています。それではその最後について聖書は何と言っているでしょうか。イエス様はかつてその弟子達に言われました。
1「あなたがたは、心を騒がせないがよい。神を信じ、またわたしを信じなさい。2わたしの父の家には、すまいがたくさんある。もしなかったならば、わたしはそう言っておいたであろう。あなたがたのために、場所を用意しに行くのだから。3そして、行って、場所の用意ができたならば、またきて、あなたがたをわたしのところに迎えよう。わたしのおる所にあなたがたもおらせるためである。（ヨハネ１４章１節－３節）
人生最後の時が来た時に、イエス様は既に私達が行くべき場所を備えてくださっているといいます。そのところでイエス様は私達を迎えてくださるというのです。このように始まりと終わりを知った者はどうするのでしょうか。その間の歩みを最善を尽くして生きるだけです。
この「最初と最後の間という今」について思い巡らしていて何度も去来する思いがあります。それはその間で私達が経験する多くのことは全てこの地上限定のものだということです。それらの多くはイエス様が備えてくださった場所ではもはや体験できないものです。そう思いましたらこの人生で体験できますことがとても貴重なものと思われてきます。最初と最後を知ることにより、この間をどう生きていくのかということがはっきりとするののです。
最後にその初めと終りの間の私達の今の生活に関して一つだけ心に留めておくべきことをお話しましょう。それは「目は飽きることがない」ということです。
目は飽きることがない
8すべての事は人をうみ疲れさせる、人はこれを言いつくすことができない。目は見ることに飽きることがなく、耳は聞くことに満足することがない。
ソロモンの成した功績はその当時、群をぬいていました。彼は他国との貿易をしておりましたから、ひっきりなしに世界中から見たこともないものが輸入されてきたのです。そして、妃７００人、妾３００人をかかえていました。実に一人づつ毎日、妃と妾に会おうとするのならば数年かけないとその全てに会えないというようなものでした。そのような意味で彼の目の前には毎日のように何か新しいもの、刺激あるものが通り過ぎていったのです。
日本はあの世界大戦の後、まさしく焼け野原から復興してきた国です。国民が一丸となって日本を築き上げてきたのだということを私も聞きながら育ちました。そして、短い間に世界有数の経済大国となり、他国では考えられないような多くの豊かさを私達は経験してきました。
私がまだ１０代のおわり頃、日本はバブル経済のただ中にありました。それは「ジャパン アズ ナンバーワン」という本が売れた時代でした。当時、私はテネシー州におり、日本人の友人が車を買うようにと親から送金された何万ドルというキャッシュをもってポルシェを買いに行くのについて行ったことがあります。まだ２０歳そこそこの若造が束となった百ドル札をカウンターに差し出した時、ディーラーの目は点となっていました。その時代、この辺りの不動産やゴルフ場等も日本の企業が買っていったといいます。
日本政府が、通称、ふるさと創生事業として１９８８年から１９８９年にかけて各市町村に対して地域振興に使える資金として各々一億円を交付したという時代です。どうしていいのか分からず一億円で金の置物や宝くじを買ったという地域もありました。まさしくある意味、日本は裕福のきわみをあの時、体験したのです。その年代は異なりますが、アメリカも同じようなところをかつて通りました。
まさしく目が飽きることを求め、耳が満足することを求め、そして実際にそれらを獲得することができた時代でした。あのエデンの園でイブが禁断の実を前にして感じたように「食べるによく、目には美しく、賢くなるには好ましい」ものを私達はあの時、手にしたのです。しかし、それからしばしの年月が経ち、今、私達に分かることは、それらのものはもはや私達の心にはないということです。私達があのバブルで学んだこごはまさしくソロモンが言ったように「目は見ることに飽きることがなく、耳は聞くことに満足することがない」ということだったのです。
ソロモンが叫ぶ、この山頂からの声を私達はしっかりと受け止めましょう。最後の最後まで目に見えるものによって飽きるように、聞くことにおいて満足するようにとそれらだけを追いかけて、最後の最後にそのために費やした時を嘆き、自分には「何の楽しみもない」と言うことがないように。そうならないように、その前に自分の始まりとその最後を知り、その間を主と共に生きていく者となりましょう。お祈りします。
Ecclesiastes: The Voice from the Mountain Top August 12, 2012
Last year before I left to Israel, I read guidebooks and travel journals of those who have visited Israel. I did this because I was not there to sight see. When reading all these, I am able to get a general idea of what the city of Jerusalem looks like. Therefore, before visiting, I had in mind where certain historic cites are and even knew that there’s a delicious bakery at this certain crossroad.
If I were planning to live in Jerusalem for a year, I wouldn’t have to research all this; I would just take the time to walk around the local area with my own feet. However, because traveling is done under a limited amount time, it was temporally and financially very important for me to know the must-see places to some extent beforehand.
When you enter the country neglecting this, it becomes hard to do what you have planned for the day due to the loss of time. There are many problems one can avoid just by knowing. Wasting time isn’t that bad, but in the worst case scenario, not knowing could put you in life threatening situations.
In Bethlehem, the birth city of Jesus Christ, there was a tense situation in 2002, where a church along with hostages was captured by the Palestinians, which was followed by the invasion of the Israeli army. Unaware of the battle that was taking place, a Japanese couple was walking from the Bethlehem checkpoint to the church, but luckily taken under shelter by reporters. This news was aired worldwide by CNN and BBC. They were so into reading their guidebook that they didn’t even notice the empty city where a curfew had been issued. It is said that even the Palestinian residents did not hide their bemusement when the tourists suddenly appeared on the battle front. They were nearly killed because they were unaware of the events taking place in Bethlehem. Sometimes, “being unaware” leads to fatal things. That is why there are things in our lives that “we should know about in advance.”
We can say the same about our lives. Our lives are a long journey. And this journey is a one time journey. I believe it is beneficial for us to listen to the words of our ancestors because the time given to us is limited and every bit of this journey is real, it’s not a rehearsal. It is better to be lost for three hours, than to regret something you could have avoided only if you listened to your ancestors. Neglecting the voice makes life unexpected and undesirable, like buttoning up your shirt wrong. These situations that cannot be undone should be avoided as much as possible.
Open before us today is the book of Ecclesiastes, which was written by the third king of Israel, King Solomon. This book is very interesting because not once does the word “God” appear, nor is it once quoted in the New Testament. I will not go into much detail but would like to look at a few points today because we have already talked about the book of Ecclesiastes through a series last year. So first, let me tell you the conclusion. The conclusion of Ecclesiastes at the end of the book and is written as follows:
“Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, “I find no pleasure in them”—before the sun and the light and the moon and the stars grow dark, and the clouds return after the rain;” Ecclesiastes 12:1-2
Solomon is saying, “Remember your Creator” so that you would avoid feelings like “my life was boring” after you’ve aged and lived your life. And Solomon says, the quicker it is and the younger you are the better.
Some of you may be preparing to start a business. Some of you may want to be famous. Others may want to live a happy pleasant life, or there may be those of you who want to experience a wonderful love.
Solomon, who I am about to talk about today, is a man who made it all happen. In fact, in his case the achievement was at a different level; he got everything we want. He was a man who stood on the summit of the mountain where we “yearn to be” and “yearn to achieve.” Solomon writes about his feelings as he stands at the summit. And his honest feelings are written in this book of Ecclesiastes. Listening to these words of our ancestor is very beneficial to us.
Today, I am going to talked about the book of Ecclesiastes which Solomon wrote, all at once. However, I would like to encourage you to take your time to read this book because it is easy to understand and relate to, just like Proverbs which we talked about last week. Today, I’d like to simply take a look at three things from Ecclesiastes 1:1-11. But first, let us read the Bible.
1 The words of the Teacher, son of David, king in Jerusalem: 2 “Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher. Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless.” 3 What do people gain from all their labors at which they toil under the sun? 4 Generations come and generations go, but the earth remains forever. 5 The sun rises and the sun sets, and hurries back to where it rises. 6 The wind blows to the south and turns to the north; round and round it goes, ever returning on its course. 7 All streams flow into the sea, yet the sea is never full. To the place the streams come from, there they return again. 8 All things are wearisome, more than one can say. The eye never has enough of seeing, nor the ear its fill of hearing. 9 What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun. 10 Is there anything of which one can say, “Look! This is something new”? It was here already, long ago; it was here before our time. 11 No one remembers the former generations, and even those yet to come will not be remembered by those who follow them.
By any stretch of the imagination, these words are like the words of a monk sitting in zen meditation in a traditional dry landscape garden in Kyoto’s Ryoanji Temple. However, these words are clearly not the words of a Japanese, but the words of the King of Israel who lived 3000 years ago. I will be talking about three emptiness from these words of Solomon. First, let us look at, “emptiness of not knowing the meaning.”
Emptiness of Not Knowing the Meaning
2 “Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher. Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless.” 3 What do people gain from all their labors at which they toil under the sun?
Solomon said, “What do people gain from all their labors at which they toil under the sun?” What this says is, in other words, “What is the meaning to our labors.”
A person once said, “I may die, but the world will not change. Even if I may dies today, someone will sit at my desk tomorrow and finish my work. My company will not face trouble even if I were no longer there.” Today and tomorrow, morning will come and the sun will set as if nothing ever happened.
No matter how well known you may be, you are on this earth for a brief moment, then will be gone, including from the memories of others. That is our fate. We will soon be gone. And we will soon be forgotten. Then what is the meaning to our daily labor?
If I were to express the time we are in now, it would be “The age that has lost its meaning.” When we cannot find meaning to what we do, our hands and feet stop. And for some, joy is lost, and for others, working and even living becomes troublesome.
First of all, humans are the only ones who think “what is the meaning of this.” Recently, a turtledove laid eggs in a flowerpot that hangs by the entrance of our house. Two baby birds hatched. And since the flowerpot is at eye level, we make eye contact every time we enter our home. I was able to observe the very fun scene of birth and parenting. But those parent doves do not think about “the meaning of a child being given to them or the meaning of parenting.” They just nourish and raise their child by following their instincts.
Yet people think about meanings. It is hard for us to continue doing things without knowing the meaning behind the task. And when we cannot find the meaning, we feel emptiness in our hearts. This is an empty cavity in our heart we wish to fill but cannot. Knowing the human heart 3000 years ago, Solomon writes those words to tell us a way to escape such a place.
1 Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, “I find no pleasure in them” 2 before the sun and the light and the moon and the stars grow dark, and the clouds return after the rain; Ecclesiastes 12:1-2.
I don’t remember where it was. But I think it was when I was still 4 or 5. I visited an orphanage with my mother. When we entered the facility, children my age came up to my mom and asked, “Whose mother are you? Whose mother are you?” I cannot forget that moment. In my heart I was saying, “She’s my mom!”
I don’t know the circumstance under which those children came into the facility. However, my heart tightens when I think about the sincere desire in the children’s hearts for their own parents. The children wanted to know who their parents were.
We say we are “given” a child because human birth and human life are beyond our wishes and thoughts. In reality, the cause of us being on Earth is not only our parents. Children cannot pick their parents and parents cannot pick their children. A child being born is clearly far beyond the thoughts of the parents.
I’m sure there are some golf lovers here. I don’t play golf much so I don’t know, but I hear it’s fun. Although there seem to be detailed rules and complex strategies, it fundamentally seems like a very simple sport. That’s because in golf, there’s a place where you hit the first ball, then go to where the ball landed and hit it again. Ultimately, golf is a sport where you compete to get the golf ball in the hole in the fewest number of strokes.
Although I said I don’t played golf, I actually once held a golf club for the first time in my life when I stayed at Shimada-sensei’s house because he, being a golf lover, invited me to go to the driving range. In baseball, hitting the ball is harder because you have to hit the pitcher’s fastballs and curve balls. So I was thinking, hitting a still golf ball was going to be a piece of cake. But soon I realized how foolish I was. I kept swinging at the golf ball, but I would miss and miss. And even if I hit it, it wouldn’t go straight. I once more learned the difficulty of golf.
So thinking about this, I had a thought. What If I was a golf ball? Most golf balls are the same color, same sphere and don’t catch one’s attention even if they were lying around. Some times they are used to massage the bottom of your foot or made a dog’s toy. Some golf balls may roll into the garage and spend the rest of their life under the washing machine covered in dust.
However, the moment the golf ball is placed on a tee on the teeing ground (where the ball is first hit), the golf ball’s reason for existence becomes clear. That is: to be hit, fly forward and to go into the hole with the least number of strokes. To accomplish this one thing, many people reform golf balls, golf clubs, prepare the lawn and wanting to see the outcome, a gallery of people follows its course.
We are the same. By standing at the starting point and knowing the Creator who gave us life, we understand why we were born. And by this, we discover the things to be done in our lives that follow.
John 15:16 writes: “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit —fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.”
Here, Jesus Christ says that no one chose to be born into this world. Our parents didn’t choose either. But the bible says, “I chose you.” And the reason for this is also written here, “so that you might go and bear fruit —fruit that will last—.” When we discover the beginning, we naturally start to understand what kind of fruit we will bear.
I would like to take a look at the second point: “emptiness of not knowing the destination.”
Emptiness of Not Knowing the Destination
4 Generations come and generations go, but the earth remains forever. 5 The sun rises and the sun sets, and hurries back to where it rises. 6 The wind blows to the south and turns to the north; round and round it goes, ever returning on its course. 7 All streams flow into the sea, yet the sea is never full. To the place the streams come from, there they return again. 8 All things are wearisome, more than one can say.
These words seem to be telling the oriental thoughts of the cycle of life. Everything will pass from one thing to another and ever return on its course. Indeed, there is a circulation when we take a look at the sun or the river. The sun will continue to set and rise. The river will flow into the ocean, then become rain and return to the river. When Solomon thought that he too was in this cycle, he said that all things make people wearisome; in other words, meaningless. Why? Because we are completely unaware of the direction we are facing as well as our destination.
Returning to golf, if we were able to hit the golf ball wherever we pleased, golf wouldn’t be fun. Golf is only fun because there’s a beginning and an end. Many people are fascinated by the fun of having a beginning and an end, not to mention the time in between the first shot and the last sink in the cup.
Our emptiness comes from not knowing the beginning and the end. Then what does the bible say about the end? Jesus once said to his disciples:
1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. (John 14:1-3)
When the ends of our lives come, Jesus says that he has already prepared a place for us to go. Jesus also says he will welcome us here. What does one do when discovering the beginning and the end? Just do you best to live the life in between.
There’s a thought that comes and goes when we think about “the present time in between the beginning and end.” The thought is that, all the things we experience in this interval are limited to this earth. Many of these things cannot be experienced in the place Jesus has prepared for us. When we think about this, the things that we experience in our lives seem very valuable. By discovering the beginning and the end, it becomes clear as to how to live the time in between.
Lastly, I would like to talk about one thing we need to bear in mind regarding our current lives that exists between the beginning and the end. That is, “the eye never has enough of seeing.”
The Eye Never has Enough of Seeing
8 All things are wearisome, more than one can say. The eye never has enough of seeing, nor the ear its fill of hearing.
The achievements of Solomon at the time, rose above the common herd. Things that have never been seen before were constantly imported from all over the world because he was active in foreign trade. He also had 700 wives and 300 concubines. If he were to in fact meet one wife or concubine a day, it would take a few years to meet them all. In that sense, something new and exciting passed right before his eyes everyday.
Japan was the very country that recovered from the ruins of WWII. I grew up hearing that the citizens united to build Japan up. And, within a short period of time, became one of the world’s leading economic powers and experienced the abundance in wealth unthinkable in other countries.
I was still in my late teens when Japan was at its economic bubble peak. This was the time when the book “Japan as Number One” was sold. At the time I was in Tennessee and remember my Japanese friend whose parents sent him money to go buy a car. He took the cash and I went with him to go to buy a Porsche. The dealer’s jaw dropped when he was handed the bundled hundred dollar bills from a youngster around 20 years old. I also heard that during this time, Japanese companies bought real estate, golf courses and etc in this area.
This was the time period when the Japanese government established the Furusato Creation Project and granted one hundred million yen to fund each municipal’s regional development through 1988 and 1989. There were regions that bought gold ornaments or lottery tickets because they didn't’ know what to do with the money. In a sense, Japan had experienced extreme wealth during that time. Although at a different time, the U.S. has also gone through a similar time period.
This was a time period where we were actually able to obtain what our eyes had enough of seeing and our ears had enough of hearing. During this time, we took in hand something that is “good for food, pleasing to the eye and also desirable for gaining wisdom,” just as how Eve felt when she saw the forbidden fruit in that Garden of Eden. However, the years have passed since then, and what we now know is that these things don’t exist in our hearts anymore. What we learned in that bubble was indeed what Solomon had said, “the eye never has enough of seeing, nor the ear its fill of hearing.”
Let us firmly grasp what Solomon tells us from the mountain’s summit. Let us not just chase to the end what we can get enough visually or chase the satisfaction our ears can bring. At the end, let us not lament the time we’ve wasted for these things and say, I had “no fun.” Let us first discover our beginning and end and walk with the Lord with the time in between.
