最初に伝えられた人達

今年もクリスマスがやってきます。イエス・キリストへの信仰を持っている者達にとりまして、この日は特別な日です。そして、クリスマスが終わり、数か月しますと今度はイースターがやってきます。言うまでもなく、これらの日はイエス・キリストの誕生とイエス・キリストの復活を記念する日でありまして、私達にとりましてはある意味、アンダーラインが記されるほどに大切な日となっています。今日はクリスマスを前にこの聖書の中で最も大切な二つの出来事から神様のメッセージを聴きましょう。ます、ルカによる福音書２章８節‐２０節を読ませていただきます。
８その地方で羊飼いたちが野宿をしながら、夜通し羊の群れの番をしていた。９すると、主の御使いが現れ、主の栄光が周りを照らしたので、彼らは非常に恐れた。１０御使いは言った。「恐れるな。わたしは、民全体に与えられる大きな喜びを告げる。１１今日ダビデの町で、あなたがたのために救い主がお生まれになった。この方こそ主なるキリストである。１２あなたがたは、布にくるまって飼い葉桶の中に寝ている乳飲み子を見つけるであろう。それが、あなたがたに与えられるしるしである」１３するとたちまち、おびただしい天の軍勢が現れ、御使いと一緒になって神を賛美して言った。１４「いと高きところでは、神に栄光があるように、地の上では、み心にかなう人々に平和があるように」１５御使い達が彼らを離れて天に帰った時、羊飼いたちは「さあ、ベツレヘムへ行って、主がお知らせくださったその出来事を見てこようではないか」と互いに語り合った。１６そして急いで行って、マリアとヨセフ、また飼い葉桶に寝かせてある幼な子を捜し当てた。１７彼らに会った上で、この子について自分達に告げ知らされた事を、人々に伝えた。人々は皆、羊飼い達が話してくれたことを聞いて、不思議に思った。１９しかし、マリヤはこれらの事をことごとく心に留めて、思いめぐらしていた。２０羊飼い達は、見聞きしたことが何もかも自分達に語られたとおりであったので、神を崇め、また賛美しながら帰って行った。
新約聖書はイエス・キリストの誕生から始まります。そして、その出来事には聖書に貫かれているメッセージが盛り込まれています。そのメッセージはイエス様の誕生の一報がまず羊飼いに伝えられたということです。
私達はその伝えるべき情報が重要であればあるほど、伝える相手を選びます。ベルリンの壁が崩れる直前に、そのことを知らせる電話が我が家に鳴ることはありませんでした。当然です、そのようなことは国の指導者レベルの間にまず伝えられるからです。国を揺るがす出来事があった時に、オバマ大統領がまず私達の教会に電話をかけてくることはありません。 大統領がそうしなければならない理由はありませんし、たとえ伝えられても私達には何もできないのです。
今から２０００年前、「救い主の誕生」というニュースが天の御使いを通して羊飼いに伝えられました。今日、世界中で幾十億もの人達が祝うクリスマスの主人公の誕生というニュースです。「誰それがノーベル賞をとりました、号外です」と街角で配られるニュースとはけた違いのビッグニュースです。
人の偉大さというものが、その人がいなくなってから、どれだけの人達の人生に影響を及ぼしたかということによって測ることができるとしたら、イエス・キリストに肩を並べる人間は一人もいません。イエスの存在と影響力は絶大なものでいかなる人間もその足元にも及びません。このお方は神でありながら人の姿となられて誕生したということは前代未聞のことですから、このお方の誕生という知らせに匹敵するニュースを私達は何も持ち合わせていないのです。しかし、驚くべきことに、その知らせはまずベツレヘムで野宿をしていた羊飼いに伝えられたのです。
羊飼いとはどんな人達なのでしょうか。言うまでもない、羊飼いの仕事は一日中、羊を相手にするものです。それは仕事と生活が区別できないような毎日です。彼らの生活は羊のために草のある所を見つけ、移動し、まさしく羊と共に眠るような生活で、彼らには定住する場所はありませんでした。彼らはこの仕事を長きにわたり代々、その家族の中で引き継いでいたのです。
実際にこの時、彼らが野にいる間にベツレヘムでは、戸籍の登録というものがなされていて、町はごった返していたのですが、彼らには全く無関係なことで、彼らは普段と変わることなく夜通し羊を見張っていたのです。生活の基盤がない者達ですから、彼らは信頼に値する者と見なされず、裁判の証人になることもできませんでした。まさしくそういう意味で彼らは蚊帳の外の人間、数に入れられる人間ではなかったのです。
皆さん、確認しましょう。この羊飼いは偶然、イエス様の誕生のこを御使いから聞いたのではありません。神から直々に遣わされた天の御使いは多くの人間の中から明らかに意図的に彼らのものとにきて、イエス・キリストの誕生を告げたのです。なぜ、彼らなのか？そこには神様の揺るぎない思いというものがあるように思われるのです。それは何なのでしょうか。
もう一つ、けた違いのニュースについてお話しましょう。そう、それはイエス・キリストの復活のニュースです。人は誰しも生まれ、死にます。ですから、これらは誰も避けられない人生の二大イベントです。生まれるということは始まりなので、そこには喜びがありますが、死とはこの世の人生の終わりですので、そこには悲しみがあります。その死に対してイエスはご自身の身をもって新しい道をお示しになりました。その時のことについてヨハネはこう記しています。
11 しかし、マリヤは墓の外に立って泣いていた。そして泣きながら、身をかがめて墓の中をのぞくと12 白い衣を着たふたりの御使が、イエスの死体のおかれていた場所に、ひとりは頭の方に、ひとりは足の方に、すわっているのを見た。13 すると、彼らはマリヤに、「女よ、なぜ泣いているのか」と言った。マリヤは彼らに言った、「だれかが、わたしの主を取り去りました。そして、どこに置いたのか、わからないのです」。14 そう言って、うしろをふり向くと、そこにイエスが立っておられるのを見た。しかし、それがイエスであることに気がつかなかった。15 イエスは女に言われた、「女よ、なぜ泣いているのか。だれを捜しているのか」。マリヤは、その人が園の番人だと思って言った、「もしあなたが、あのかたを移したのでしたら、どこへ置いたのか、どうぞ、おっしゃって下さい。わたしがそのかたを引き取ります」。16 イエスは彼女に「マリヤよ」と言われた。マリヤはふり返って、イエスにむかってヘブル語で「ラボニ」と言った。それは、先生という意味である。17 イエスは彼女に言われた、「わたしにさわってはいけない。わたしは、まだ父のみもとに上っていないのだから。ただ、わたしの兄弟たちの所に行って、『わたしは、わたしの父またあなたがたの父であって、わたしの神またあなたがたの神であられるかたのみもとへ上って行く』と、彼らに伝えなさい」。18 マグダラのマリヤは弟子たちのところに行って、自分が主に会ったこと、またイエスがこれこれのことを自分に仰せになったことを報告した（ヨハネ２０章１１節‐１８節）。
先ほど、お話しましたクリスマスはイエスの誕生した日のことです。そして、この箇所はイエスが死んだこと、もっといいますとこのお方だけに許されていた、その死から復活なされた日のことを記しているのです。
もし、私達が絶望に打ちひしがれる死というものに希望の光があてられたとするならば、そのニュースは何にも比較することができないほどに大きなものとなるはずです。誕生とは異なり、死からの復活とは誰も経験したことがない前代未聞の出来事ですので、人類史上、最も驚くべき出来事となりうるものであったことは間違いありません。それでは、そんな出来事の一報はまず誰に伝えられたのでしょうか？
今、読みました聖書箇所には「マリア」という名前がでてきます。このマリアはイエスの母マリアではなく、「マグダラのマリア」と呼ばれていた女性のことです。マグダラとはガリラヤ湖畔にある寒村の名前で彼女はその村出身の女性であり、その辺りでは有名な女でした。なぜなら、聖書は彼女がかつて七つの悪霊に憑かれていた女性だったからです。七という数字は聖書の中では完全数ですから、それはもう悪霊によりもてあそばれ、滅茶苦茶な人生を送っていた人だったのでしょう。
皆さん、考えてみましょう。この女性もあの羊飼い達のように復活して街角を歩いているイエス様に偶然に一番最初に出会ったのではありません。復活されたイエス様は多くの人間の中から明らかに意図的に彼女の前に、一番最初にその姿を現したのです。なぜ、彼女なのか？そこには神様の揺るぎない思いというものがあるように思われるのです。それは何なのでしょうか。
生も復活も喜びの知らせです。どちらも人類史上、後にも先にもない私達への希望の約束を意味するものです。神はその第一報を羊飼いとマリアとにまず伝えました。そこにある神の思いは何なのでしょうか。
羊飼いとマリアには共通点があります。それは彼らは当時の社会の底辺にいたということです。街中で住民登録がなされているのに、羊飼いは無関係の人間だったのです。彼らの祖先は何代にもわたりベツレヘムにいたのです。しかし、彼らはその数に入れられませんでした。彼らは自分達でその生活を変えられるなどとは思っておりませんでしたし、街の喧騒に近づくことができない自分に対して惨めな思いをいだいていたに違いありません。
悪霊につかれていたマリアの人格は壊されており、彼女は誰もが知るその地方最悪の女というレッテルと共に生きていたのです。彼女が何かを言えば、何かをすれば、それはいつも問題となりました。そんな自分の姿を悔いながら、変わりたいと思いつつ変わり得ない現実の中、彼女は生きていました。
そんな彼らにイエスの誕生と復活がまず知らされ、イエス御自身が一番最初に会われたということ、それは彼らのような闇の只中に生きている者達を神様がまず何よりもその光によって照らしたいと願われているからなのです。
皆さんの中で羊飼いのような思いで生きている方はおりませんか。自分を憐れむことを日課としている方おりませんか。そのままで人生が終わってしまっていいのですか。自分はいつも蚊帳の外なのだというような思いに捕われ続けている方、いませんか。神は明らかな意図をもって、そんなあなたとの出会いを待ち望んでいらっしゃるのです。
皆さんの中でマグダラのマリアのように自分の性質、性格に失望している方はいませんか。夫、妻、子供、親兄弟、友を、そして自分の心を傷つけてしまったと自責の念に生きている方いませんか？諦めるのは早いのです。あなたはただ一つのことを知らずに生きてきたのです。それはイエス・キリストと出会い、そしてこのお方と個人的な関係を結ぶことです。神は明らかな意図をもって、そんなあなたとの出会いを待ち望んでいらっしゃるのです。
羊飼いもマリアも日々、虚しい毎日を過ごしていたことでしょうか。同じように日々の生活の中で何をやっても空しい、その空しさを誤魔化して生きようとして、それが生活を混乱させているという方、人の目にそんなあなたの心は分かりませんが、あなたご自身が十分に自分のことは分かっていらっしゃることでしょう。
神は明らかな意図をもって、そんなあなたとの出会いを待ち望んでいらっしゃるのです。
神から遣わされた御使いは羊飼いにこう言ったのです。１４「いと高きところでは、神に栄光があるように、地の上では、み心にかなう人々に平和があるように」（ルカ２章１４節）
いと高き天では神に栄光があるように。そして、この地ではみ心にかなう人々に平和があるように。この言葉は羊飼いもマリアも十二分に神の御心にかなう人でありうるということを示しています。イエス・キリストの誕生と復活が明らかにしていることは彼らのように己が実情を嘆き、悲しんでいる者達の上に神だけが与えうる平和があるようにと神は願っておられるということなのです。羊飼い、マリアを照らしたこの神の光は、今も私達の心を照らし続けているのです。何を待っておられるのですか。何を躊躇しておられるのですか。今年のクリスマス、私達はイエス・キリストの前に一歩を踏み出そうではありませんか。
『チュラビスタの地、クレアモントの地、海に沿う地方、ミラメサの向こうの地、異邦人のあの家、この家、暗黒の中に住んでいる民は大いなる光を見、死の地、死の陰に住んでいる人々に、光がのぼった』（マタイ４章１５節、１６節 参照）。
この光に既に照らされていることに気がつく人はさいわいです。地の上では神のみ心にかなう人々に平和があるように。お祈りしましょう。
The people who were first announced.

It is about the time for Christmas. This is a day that is special for people who believe in Jesus Christ. And just a few months after Christmas, Easter will come. Needless to say these days are for celebrating Jesus Christ’s birth and his resurrection; therefore they are very important days for us to mark. Just before this Christmas we will study God’s message from the two most important events in the Bible today. Let us read from Book of Luke 2:8~20.
8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”
15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.
The New Testament begins with the birth of Jesus Christ. This event contains a message that is carried throughout the Bible. The message says that the first notice of Jesus’s birth was given to the shepherds. Usually the more important the information is the more we chose which people to give it to. Just before the fall of the Berlin Wall my cell phone did not ring with someone telling me about it, because such events are usually informed to the leaders of countries first. When a ground breaking event occurs it is unlikely that president Obama will call our church to inform us of it. There is no reason he should do so, even if he did we probably wouldn’t be much help.
Two thousand years ago the news of “the birth of Savior” was given to shepherds by angels. This news is still being told till this day, billions of people in the world will celebrate the birth of this Christmas’s main character. This big news is not comparable to news like, Mr. So-n-so received a noble prize or an extra edition of newspaper.
If it is possible to measure the magnitude of a person’s influence over other people’s lives after his or her death, there is no one equal to or greater than Jesus Christ. His existence and influence are immeasurable and no one can reach to his feet. This unprecedented event, that Jesus is God and that he was born as a human, has no equal to it. However, this remarkable event was first told to shepherds, who were sleeping out in the open in Bethlehem.
What kind of people were these shepherds? Their job was to deal with sheep all day long and they could not really tell the difference between working time and free time. They looked for meadows for their sheep and moved from place to place. Their life is almost like they slept among sheep therefore they didn’t have any place to settle down. Generation after generation they inherit this job from within their families.
Actually at this very time in Bethlehem the family registration system was just beginning to start, therefore the town was crowded with many people, but that had nothing to these shepherds at all, they were to keep watch over the sheep all night long as they always do. Because the shepherds have no foundation of a real life, they were not considered worthy of trust, for that reason they couldn’t even become a witness at court. This meant that they were like outsiders; they were not countable as town’s people.
Let us confirm somethings. These shepherds didn’t accidently hear of Jesus’s birth from the angels. These angels, which were sent by God who obviously chose these Sheppard’s for the announcement of the birth of Jesus Christ. Why them? I believe this was a solid idea from God. Then why?
There is one more bit of extraordinary News I would like to share with you, yes that’s right, it is the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Every human being is born and then dies. These are two events we can’t avoid. Being born is the beginning, so there is joy associated with it, however death is the closing of life in this world and so we associate sorrow with it. Jesus showed us a new path for death. John wrote about this event like this:
11 Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb 12 and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.13 They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?” “They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.” 14 At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus.15 He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?” Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”). 17 Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” 18 Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her. ( John 20: 11~18 )
As I mentioned at the beginning, Christmas is the Birth of Jesus. This passage is talking about the death of Jesus, and moreover this passage tells us about the day he is resurrected from death which was only allowed for Jesus.
If death is what overwhelms us with despair, what if it can be brightened by a beam of hope, and then this resurrection is amazing news that is not comparable to anything else. It is not a birth but the resurrection of the dead that no one else had ever done or heard of. There is no doubt that this was the most wonderful event in all human history. Now again, who were the first to receive this amazing news?
In the passage we just read, we find the name Mary. This Mary is not Jesus’s mother; this is the woman who is called Mary Magdalene in the Bible. Magdala is the name of a lonely village in the Sea of Galilee. Mary came from this village and she was well-known there. The reason why she was well known is because the Bible said that she once had been possessed by seven demons. As seven is considered the perfect number in the Bible, she probably had a horrible and chaotic life at that time.
Please think this over. This woman, who was the first to meet Jesus after his resurrection, didn’t accidentally come across Him. Jesus who was just resurrected “purposely” showed His first appearance to this woman and not to any other person. Why her? I believe this was another solid idea form God. Then why?
Being born and being resurrected are both joyful news. Both of these bring the promise of our greatest hope in human history, past or future. God gave the first of these messages to the shepherds and the second to Mary before anyone else. What are Gods thoughts in all of this?
The shepherds and Mary have something in common. They were both at the bottom of their social pyramid at that time. When most of people in the town were busy with the family registration, those shepherds were unrelated to this event. Even though, generations after generation they were living in Bethlehem, they were not counted in their society. They didn’t think that they could change their lives and they might have felt pitiful for not being involved in this event of society.
The life of Mary who was possessed by demons was ruined and she had to live with the label, “the worst woman in the region”. Whatever she said or did, her actions always caused trouble. She had been living with the action of her conduct, repenting them, and wishing for change in her unchangeable reality.
The reason why the news of Jesus’s birth and resurrection was brought to such people, in other words why Jesus would show himself to them first, was God’s desire to shine on such people who lived in despair.
Let me ask; is there anyone who has same feeling as those shepherds in this congregation, who got used to feeling pity for themselves? If so, are you ok with leaving your life as it is? Aren’t you captivated by the idea that you are like the outsider and that you are not countable as a person from others? God is looking forward to having an encounter with you.
Is there anyone who is in despair because of their own nature or personality like Mary Magdalen did? Who has been carrying a guilty conscience of hurting their husband, wife, children, parents, brothers, friends or themselves? Do not be too quick to give up. You have been living without knowing one thing. That one thing is your encounter with Jesus and having a personal relationship with him. God has been waiting for this encounter with you.
I believe that those Shepherds and Mary had lived empty lives day after day. Likewise if you feel empty in your daily life; you try to keep going by deceiving your feelings, and thereby causing disorder to occur in your life. Others cannot tell what’s in your mind but you ought to know what is going on in your own mind. He is waiting to meet you.
The angels that God sent to the Shepherds told them, “Glory to God in the highest heaven and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”
“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” These words indicate that God has given his favor to the shepherds and Mary both. Jesus’s birth and resurrection allude to the fact that God wants those people, who cry for change in their reality, to have peace that only he is able to give. God’s light that shined on the shepherds and Mary also is shining on our hearts too. What are you waiting for? What are you hesitating for? Let us take a step before Jesus Christ this Christmas!
“Land of Chula Vista and land of Clermont,
the Way of the Sea, beyond the Mira Mesa,
Galilee of the Gentiles—
the people living in darkness
have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of the shadow of death
a light has dawned.”
Blessed are those who see that God’s light is shining on them and on earth peace to those to whom his favor rests on. Let us pray.
