私は明らかに「このことをこの方は心から願っているんだろうな」と思われることに対して「これは神様のみ心だと思いますから従います」というような報告を聞くことが度々、あります。しかし「このことは私の願っていることではないのですが、神様のみ心はそちらにあるようなのです。だから、従います」という言葉は、ほとんど聞くことがないのです・・・。
・・・このことは自分の願いがあまりにも強いと、神の御心を聞き逃してしまい、神の御心をも自分の決断を後押しするものとして利用してしまうことを私達はしてしまうということを示しています。

神の御業を見た人達

結婚式とは、神の御前で新しい人生を夫婦として出発しようとする新郎新婦を皆でお祝いする時です。この門出は特別なひと時で、その喜びは今も昔も同じです。今から２０００年前、ガリラヤのカナという地でもこの婚礼が執り行われていました。
1三日目にガリラヤのカナに婚礼があって、イエスの母がそこにいた。2イエスも弟子たちも、その婚礼に招かれた。3ぶどう酒がなくなったので、母はイエスに言った、「ぶどう酒がなくなってしまいました」。4イエスは母に言われた、「婦人よ、あなたは、わたしと、なんの係わりがありますか。わたしの時は、まだきていません」。5母は僕たちに言った、「このかたが、あなたがたに言いつけることは、なんでもして下さい」。6そこには、ユダヤ人のきよめのならわしに従って、それぞれ四、五斗もはいる石の水がめが、六つ置いてあった。7イエスは彼らに「かめに水をいっぱい入れなさい」と言われたので、彼らは口のところまでいっぱいに入れた。8そこで彼らに言われた、「さあ、くんで、料理がしらのところに持って行きなさい」。すると、彼らは持って行った。9料理がしらは、ぶどう酒になった水をなめてみたが、それがどこからきたのか知らなかったので、（水をくんだ僕たちは知っていた）花婿を呼んで10言った、「どんな人でも、初めによいぶどう酒を出して、酔いがまわったころにわるいのを出すものだ。それだのに、あなたはよいぶどう酒を今までとっておかれました」。11イエスは、この最初のしるしをガリラヤのカナで行い、その栄光を現された。そして弟子たちはイエスを信じた。12そののち、イエスは、その母、兄弟たち、弟子たちと一緒に、カペナウムに下って、幾日かそこにとどまられた（ヨハネ2章1節―12節）。
今、読みました出来事はガリラヤ地方の田舎町、カナという町で起きた出来事です。この町に結婚式があったというのです。そして、その婚宴にイエス様も母マリアもイエス様の弟子たちも招かれていたというのです。
しかし、そのお祝いの席で問題が起こりました。婚宴の席で欠かすことのできないブドウ酒が底をついてしまったのです。現代なら代わりになる飲み物は、ちょっとリッカー・ストアに行けば、いくらでも補充することができます。しかし、当時はそういうわけにはいきませんでした。
さらに当時の婚宴は一週間ほど続いたといいます。生涯一度のその大切な場所で、その一週間、訪問客を楽しませ、もてなすということは、新郎新婦にとって二人でする一番最初の共同作業でありとても大切なことでした。その間に飲食が尽きてしまうということは、訪問客に対しての無礼となり、とても恥ずべきことでありました。この婚宴では、その最悪の事が起きてしまったのです。
おそらくイエス様も母マリアもこの家と何かしらの関係があったのではないかと思われます。特にマリアはこの家族のために、陰で色々なことをして協力していたと思われ、その時、彼女はブドウ酒がなくなってしまったことに気がついたのです。
マリアは母として、息子イエスを身近に頼もしく見てきたに違いありません。そして、その頼りがいのあるイエスなら、この困難な状況に対処してくれるに違いないと思ったに違いありません。ゆえにそこで働いていた僕に言ったのです「この方が、あなたがたに言いつけることは、何でもしてください」。
それに対して当のイエス様は僕達に言ったのです「かめに水をいっぱい入れなさい」（７）。そこにはユダヤ人のきよめの慣わしに従って、４、５斗も入る石の水がめが６つ置かれていました。
ここには「斗」という、私たちが使わない数量が書かれていますが、４、５斗というのはだいたい３０ガロンだといわれています。あの一ガロンの牛乳パック ３０個分です。そのような瓶が６つあるというのですから、全部で１８０ガロンです。これは相当の量の水だと思います。
当時は言うまでもなく水道もなければ、ホースもない時代です。井戸からか、泉からか、水をすくい、そして瓶に移したのでしょう。一ガロンの容器で、水を入れることになると１８０回、水を瓶に注がなければなりません。これは相当の重労働です。
僕達はブドウ酒がなくなりつつあることにより、慌てる料理頭の姿というものも見ていたと思います。すなわち、彼らは婚宴の席で不足しているのは、水ではなくてブドウ酒だということを知っていたのです。しかし、イエス様はそんな彼らに「水を口いっぱいに入れなさい」と言われました。
一ガロンの水ならまだしも、１８０ガロンもの水を瓶に入れなければならない。僕達はそれがどんなにシンドイ仕事であるかを知っていたと思います。さぁ、彼らはどうしたのか？彼らはその言葉に従い口のところまでいっぱいに水を入れたのです。
彼らはイエス様の言葉に従ったのです。そして、料理頭の所に口まで水でいっぱいになった瓶をもって行き、彼が瓶の水をなめてみると、それはブドウ酒となっていたというのです。しかも、今まで出していたものよりも良質のブドウ酒だというのです。料理頭ならブドウ酒がどこで入手できて、どのブドウ酒が美味く、値段はいくらということまで知っていたと思います。しかし、そんな彼もこのブドウ酒がどこから来たのかが分からなかったというのです。
私達は思います。どう考えてもこんなことはあり得ないと。「あり得ない」ということは、すなわち私達の知識、経験に照らし合わせてみて、これは起こりえないということです。
しかし、私達はここでよくよく考えなければなりません。神とは人知を超えたお方であるということを。人知を超えたお方であるゆえに、私達はその存在を神と呼ぶのです。
聖書には色々な奇跡が書かれています。ですから「キリストの教えは素晴らしいけれど、どうもあの奇跡だけは受けつけられない」。そう思われる方は多いと思います。
しかし、どうぞお心におとめください。聖書はその見開きのページ、一番最初に『はじめに神は天と地とを創造された』（創世記１章１節）という言葉と共に始まっているということを。このことがまず大前提としてあるのなら、水がブドウ酒になるということは私達には到底信じ難きことですが、神にとりまして、このことは別に特別なことではないのです。私達の頭の中に収まりきらないからと言って、それを否定するのはおかしな話です。
しかし、そうであるのなら、同時に私達はこうも思います。「水を汲み、それで瓶を満たしなさい」などと言わずに、なぜ人知を超えた力により空の瓶に、最高のぶどう酒を満たさなかったのだろうかと。１８０ガロンの水を入れるなどという苦労極まりないプロセスをスキップして、瓶にぶどう酒そのものを満たせば済む話でしょう。
しかし、イエス様はあえて時間と労力を必要とする方法をとられました。先々週もお話ししましたように、神様はプロセスを大切にするお方であることがここにも明らかにされています。そう、イエス様はその御業を成すために、たとえ手間がかかったとしても、そのことを人の信仰に基づく彼らの働きと共同して成すべきこととされたのです。
時々、私達はこのことを忘れます。椅子に座ったまま、何もせずに神が最善をしてくれると言います。神は確かに最善を成してくださるお方です。しかし、それは私達が信仰と共に成す最善と共に成就していくのです。ローマ８章２８節はこのことを明確に言っているではありませんか。
『神は、神を愛する者たち、すなわち、ご計画に従って召された者たちと共に働いて、万事を益となるようにして下さることを、わたしたちは知っている』（ローマ８章２８節）。神は私達と共に働き、万事を益としてくださるのです。神は私達とともに働かれることを望んでおられるのです。
この僕達は名前も記されていません。ただ彼らはイエス様の言葉に従い仕えたのです。もし、この僕達がイエス様の言葉「さあ、汲んで、料理がしらのところに持って行きなさい」に従わなかったらどうだったでしょうか。その可能性は十分にあったことでしょう。なぜなら、イエスの言葉は明らかに無駄のように思えるのですから。
しかし、僕は従ったのです。彼らにとって、それは意味のないことに思えることでした。徒労に終わるようなことでした。私たちは自分の頭で理解できること、採算が取れそうな、私達自身も願っている命令であるならば喜んで従います。しかし、その命令が自分の願うことではないとするならば、それに従うことは難しいのです。そして、大抵の場合、私達はそれに従うことはありません。
イエス様はマタイによる福音書５章４７節で「兄弟だけにあいさつをしたからとて、なんの優れた事をしているだろうか。そのようなことは異邦人でもしているではないか」と言っていますが、この言葉は言い換えれば「あなたが願っていることをしなさいという命令に従うことは、当たり前のことで、そんなことは誰でもしている」ということになります。

しかし「このことは私の願っていることではないのですが、神様のみ心はそちらにあるようなのです。だから、従います」という言葉は、ほとんど聞くことがないのです。
そして、この二つの事の成り行きと結末を見る時に、不思議なことを発見します。それは「自分の願っていること」こそが「神の御心だ」としている方達は自分の願っている道を選んでいるはずなのに、どうもその歩みがなかなか進まないということがあるのです。
それに対して、たとえ自分の願う道ではないけれど、神様のみ心だということを示されて、そこに向かって歩き始めている方達に、当初は全く想像もしなかったような、神様の御業を見させていただくことがあるのです。
このことは自分の願いがあまりにも強いと、神の御心を聞き逃してしまい、神の御心をも自分の決断を後押しするものとして利用してしまうことを私達はしてしまうということを示しています。
私達にとりまして「主の御心」とはいったい何なのでしょうか。「主の御心」とはいつも私達の願いと合致するものなのでしょうか。それとも私達は「自分の願い」を「主の御心」と言い代えて「お墨付き」をいただこうとしているのでしょうか。このことはいつも私達に問われることなのです。
さて、それではなぜ、たとえ自分の願いとは異なることであっても神に従う者の中に主は恵みと祝福を注がれるのでしょうか。なぜなら、それが聖書の約束だからです。
イエス様はマルコによる福音書８章３４節―３７節で言いました「誰でも私についてきたいと思うなら、自分を捨て、自分の十字架を負うて、わたしに従ってきなさい。自分の命を救おうと思う者はそれを失い、わたしのため、また福音のために、自分の命を失う者は、それを救うであろう。人が全世界をもうけても、自分の命を損したら、何の得になろうか。また、人はどんな代価を払って、その命を買い戻すことができようか」（マルコ８章３４－３７）
イエス様は言いました。私について行こうと思うものは、自分を捨て、自分の十字架を負うて、私に従いなさい。ここにはっきりと「私に従え」と書かれています。そして、この言葉を前に私達はしり込みします。「自分を捨て？」「自分の十字架を負うて？」私達はこれらの言葉から自分の主体性を失い、あたかも洗脳されかたのように、あるいは歯をくいしばって、どうにかこうにか神様に従う者達をメージします。
しかし、イエス様は「いいや、そうではない」とこの後に言っているです。「自分の命を救おうと思う者は、それを失い、私のため、また福音のために、自分の命を失う者は、それを救う」。これを本当にシンプルに言うならば、「自分の思うがままに生きるのではなく、私に従ってくるのならば、あなたがたは自分の命を救うことになる」ということです。すなわち、その生き方こそがあなたにとって最善の生き方なのだということです。
今日、見ております僕達はイエス様の言葉に従い二つのものをそのためにささげました。そうです、自分の「労力」と「時間」です。６つの瓶に水を入れるということは、それなりの時間と労力が必要だったことでしょう。僕達はそれを捧げたのです。
私達は「手に入れること」、「与えられること」を願います。「してもらうこと」、それに多大な関心をよせます。そして、これらのことだけに思いが向いていきますと、「与える」などということは考えられなくなります。
しかし、聖書は言っているのです「受けるよりは与える方が幸いです」（使徒行伝２０章３５節）。これは私たちに対するチャレンジングな言葉です。なぜなら、私たちはどれだけ手に入れたか、どれだけしてもらえたかが、自分の幸福度を計るバロメーターなのだ信じて追求している世界に生きているからです。しかし、イエス様は「そうではない、与えることがあなたを幸福にする」というのです。
与えるということは物理的には自分のもとから、何かが手放されていくことです。それが物であっても、労力であっても、時間であっても、確かに私たちの元から何かが外に出て行きます。しかし、イエスはそれが幸いなのだというのです。
そして、さらにイエスは驚くべきことをルカによる福音書６章３８節に書いています「与えよ。そうすれば、自分にも与えられるであろう。人々はおし入れ、ゆすり入れ、あふれ出るまでに量をよくして、あなたがたの懐に入れてくれるであろう。あなたがたの量るその量りで、自分にも量りかえされるであろう」。
与えたことは、結局、自分に返ってくるのです。自分が量っている量りで、量り返されるからです。与えれば与えるほど富んでいく世界です。神様のために、本当に自分を捧げていくならば、神様は祝福してくれるのです。これが祝福された生涯の秘訣であり、それは全く持って不思議な世界です。しかし、信仰を持つということは、そのような世界を垣間見させていただける特権に預かっているということなのです。
今日、お話ししていることはイエス・キリストの生涯、一番最初になされた奇跡です。ヨハネはあえて、この記事を１１節で「最初のしるし」と言及して記録しました。その奇跡は婚宴という喜びの場で、その喜びが途切れることのないためになされた奇跡です。
すなわち、そこには「イエス様と共に生きることは喜びなのだ」というメッセージがあります。味気のない水が最高のワインになるということ。すなわち、それは味気のない人生だったものが、イエス様と共に歩んでいくときに、味わい深い人生へと変えられていくというメッセージなのです。
そして、その時にその喜びを知ったのは水をくんだ僕たちでした。水をくんだということは、イエス様の言葉に従ったということです。自分にあるものをイエス様に捧げたということです。その彼らだけが、どうして水がブドウ酒となったかを知ることができたのです。
人それぞれ、どんな生涯を送るかということはその人にかかっていますし、それぞれの人生観は異なります。しかし、この僕のように神のみわざを見させていただけるような人生を送りたいと私達は願いませんでしょうか。運が良かった、悪かったというような人生ではなく、ああ、神はこのようなことを成してくださるのか、こんなこと考えたこともなかった。そのような神のみわざを垣間見ることができるような人生、それは何と素晴らしいものかと思います。そのような人生は何によってもたらせるのでしょうか。「水をくんだ僕達は知っていた」という言葉がそのことを言い表しているのです。
ヨハネがなぜ、このことをあえてその書の一番最初に書き記したのか。この出来事はヨハネ以外の福音書の記者は記録していないことなのです。この出来事はヨハネの生涯の証だったのではないでしょうか。ヨハネは「主に従うことによって得ることができるものの価値とその喜び」というものをよくよく知っていたのではないでしょうか。
皆さん、ご存知でしょう、このヨハネだけが十二弟子の中でイエス様の十字架の元にまで従っていったのです。そうすることによって、彼だけが弟子の中でイエスの十字架上での七つの言葉を聞くことが許されたのです。それは、他の弟子達は誰も経験することができない彼の人生最高の宝となりました。
その彼が自分の目で見た十字架上のイエス様の姿を思いながら、聖霊に促され、確信に満ちて書いたのがヨハネ３章１６節です。「神はその一人子を賜ったほどに、この世を愛して下さった。それは御子を信じる者が一人も滅びないで永遠の命を得るためである」。この言葉は聖書の中で最も有名な言葉となりました。
今日、人は野球スタジアムでこの言葉を掲げ、ハンバーガー屋のソフトドリンクの底にもプリントされる言葉となりました。この確信に満ちた言葉は、イエス様の十字架を自分の目で見た者、すなわちイエス様の十字架のもとまで従ったヨハネに与えられた言葉だったのです。そして、この言葉が言わんとしていることは主イエスは父なる神の御心に従い、ご自身を捧げたゆえに私達は今、永遠の命を得ているということなのです。
「水を汲んだ僕は知っていた」。もし、私達もイエス様に従い生きるならば「本来、知りうることもできない驚くべき神の栄光を見ることになる、味気ない毎日に喜びが取り戻される」とこの言葉は今も私達に語りかけています。
私たちの人生はあとどれくらい残されているのでしょうか。その間に、主に従っていくということ、主のために生きること。私たちがそのような生涯に一歩を踏み出だすのなら、私たちは神の御業を見ることになるでしょう。お祈りしましょう。
The Ones Who Saw God’s Miracle

At a wedding ceremony, everyone is there to celebrate the groom and bride’s new life as husband and wife before God. It is a special occasion that has brought joy to people throughout generations. In John’s gospel, we read about a wedding that took place 2000 years ago in a town called Cana:
‘1 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”
4 “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.12 After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.’ (John 2:1-12)
This event took place in a town called Cana in the countryside of Galilee. There was a wedding being held in this town and Jesus, His mother Mary, and His disciples were all invited to this wedding.
But at the wedding feast a problem occurred: they ran out of wine, which was an essential part of the festivities. If it were today they could have just gone down to the liquor store. But back then it wasn’t that easy.
A typical wedding ceremony in those days is said to have lasted a whole week. For the newlyweds, entertaining the guests throughout the week was the first big task they had to accomplish as husband and wife. Running out of food or drink during the week-long celebration would have been unacceptable and disrespectful toward the guests. But that was exactly what happened at this wedding in Cana.
We can assume that Jesus and Mary were well acquainted with the couple and their family. Mary must have been helping out behind the scenes when she noticed that the wine was gone.
As Jesus’ mother, Mary knew that she could count on Him if something happened. And she knew that Jesus would be able to handle this difficult situation. So she said to the servants “Do whatever he tells you”.
Then Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water” (7). There beside them were six stone water jars, which were used by the Jews for ceremonial washing.
It says that each of these jars held twenty to thirty gallons of liquid. That’s the same as thirty of those gallon jugs of milk. There were six of these jars so that’s 180 gallons in total. That’s a lot of water.
Back then they didn’t have tapwater or even a garden hose. They had to go to a well or a spring and draw and pour out the water into the jars by hand. If they were using a gallon bucket, they had to draw and pour out the water 180 times. As you can imagine it was quite a workout.
The servants probably saw the master of the banquet panicking because there was no more wine. In other words, they knew that what they needed at the banquet was wine, not water. But Jesus told these servants to “Fill the jars with water”.
It would have been easy if it was a gallon of water, but they had 180 gallons to fill. They knew how physically exhausting that task would be. So then, what did they do? They did exactly as Jesus said, and filled the jars to the brim with water.
The servants obeyed Jesus’ words, and when they took water from the jar to the master of the banquet for him to taste, the water had been turned into wine. And the wine tasted better than the wine they have been serving. He was the master of the banquet so he must have known where he could get the best wine, which ones tasted good, and how much each of them cost. But it says here that even he did not know where this wine came from.
We would think that this kind of thing cannot happen, that it is impossible. If we look at this event in light of our own knowledge or experience, it would seem impossible.
But we must not forget, that God is above all human knowledge. And because His knowledge is far beyond ours, we call Him God.
In the Bible we find many accounts of miracles. Because of this many people think, “Jesus’ teachings are wonderful, but I find it hard to believe in those miracles”.
But please remember, that the first page in the Bible begins with the words, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). If this is true, turning water into wine is easy for God, even if we humans find it hard to believe. It would be very unwise to reject what the Bible says only because we cannot fathom it in our minds.
But if this is true, why did Jesus tell the servants to fill the jars with water, instead of just using His awesome power to instantly fill up the jars with wine? If He just filled the jars with wine, the servants could have been spared of the laborious task of drawing 180 gallons of water.
But Jesus intentionally chose a process that required their time and effort. As I shared in a message two weeks ago and as we see from this passage, God places great importance in the process it takes to accomplish His work through us. Even though Jesus could have avoided the hassle, He chose a method that required those servants’ faith and effort to accomplish His work.
Sometimes we forget this fact and say to ourselves, “God will work all things for the good so I’ll just sit here and relax”. It is true that God works all things to bring about what is best. But in order for this to happen, we too must give our best effort with faith. It says in Romans 8:28 (NIV, see footnote): “that in all things God works together with those who love him to bring about what is good”. This is what God truly desires, He wants to work together with us to bring about what is good.
Not even the names of these servants were recorded. It only says that they obeyed Jesus’ word and took action. Imagine what would have happened if they did not listen to Jesus when He told them to fill the jars with water. This very well could have happened, because on the surface, Jesus’ instructions appears meaningless.
But despite of this, the servants obeyed Jesus. They too may have thought at first that the task was meaningless and their hard work would amount to nothing. Most of us would gladly obey a command if it made sense to us and is in line with our own hopes and desires. But if the command goes against our own personal preferences, it makes it difficult to obey that command. And in most cases, we would not obey the command.
In Matthew 5:47 Jesus said “And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?”. In other words He is saying, “if you only obey a command if it’s agreeable to you, anyone could do that”.
I’ve heard many people say that they are doing something because they feel it is God’s will, when in fact it is clearly obvious that they are being motivated by their own will.
But I rarely ever hear someone say “even though this is not what I desire, I know it is God’s will, so I will obey”.
And it is interesting to see the different results that come out of these two choices. When people are motivated by their own desires but say they are being led by God’s will, although they are doing things the way they want, for most of them things don’t go as smoothly as they planned.
On the other hand, I’ve seen God do miraculous things in people’s lives when they followed His will even if it wasn’t what they initially hoped for, and because they obeyed Him, God brought about something far better than anyone could have imagined.
When we cling too hard to our own will, we miss out on hearing God’s voice and we claim something is God’s will just to push our own agenda.
So then what is God’s will for us? Is God’s will something that always agrees with our own will? Or by calling our own desires God’s will, are we trying to receive His seal of approval? In this way our true motives need to be constantly examined.
Then why does God bless those who obey Him even when it goes against their own desires? That is because it is promised to us in His word.
Jesus said, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?” (Mark 8:34-37).
Jesus said that if we want to be His disciple we must deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Him. Jesus clearly said “follow me”. We might shrink away when we hear this. When we hear “deny yourself” and “take up your cross”, we imagine someone who has been brainwashed and robbed of their freedom, or someone who is making a forced attempt to obey God somehow.
But Jesus explains that that is not the case and followed by saying, “whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it”. He is simply saying that if we choose not to live however we please but follow Him, we will save our own life. In other words, following Jesus is in our own best interest.
When the servants obeyed Jesus, they had to offer two things. Those two things were effort and time. Filling those six jars with water took some time and effort, and the servants gave their time and effort to accomplish the task.
We all hope to obtain or receive the things we desire. We are greatly concerned about what others can do for us. And when our attention is only directed towards receiving something, we hardly ever think about giving.
But the Bible tells us that “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). We are challenged by these words. These words are challenging because we live in a world where our level of happiness is measured by how much we have achieved and how much has been done for us. But Jesus tells us that we can find true happiness when we give.
To give means to let go of something that belongs to us. Whether it be our possessions, our energy, or our time, it is no longer ours when we give it away. But Jesus said that it more blessed to live this way.
And Jesus gives us an amazing promise about giving in Luke 6:38 where He said, “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you”.
When we give, we will be given back as a result. The measure we use to give is the measure that will be used when we are given back. The more we give, the more we are blessed. If we truly give ourselves to God, He will bless us in return. This is the key to living a truly blessed life. When we put our faith in God we are given the privilege of living a life filled with blessings.
The event we read about today is the very first miracle Jesus performed in His earthly life. John clearly stated in verse 11 that this “was the first of the signs”. And this miracle was performed at a wedding, a joyous event, so that the joy of that moment will not be cut short.
The message of this miracle is that a life with Jesus is a life filled with joy. He turned tasteless water into the choicest wine. In the same way, when we walk with Jesus, He can take our dull and monotonous life and turn it into a life full of joy and purpose.
At that wedding, the ones who knew this joy were the servants who had drawn the water. They had drawn the water, which means that they obeyed Jesus. They gave what they had to Jesus. As a result, only they knew how the water turned into wine.
Each of us have a different way of living life and a different outlook on life. But don’t we all hope to see God do miraculous things in our own lives? Not a life that is characterized by luck, but a life of seeing God do amazing things that we couldn’t have even imagined. How awesome it would be if we could live this kind of life and be a witness to God’s miracles. How then could we live this life? The answer is found in the passage, “the servants who had drawn the water knew”.
Why did John write about this event in the beginning of his gospel? Apart from John, no other gospel mentions about this event. Maybe it is because this event represented John’s own life; because He knew the great joy and blessing found in a life of following Jesus.
As we know, John was the only apostle who followed Jesus to the place where He was crucified. Because of this, John was the only one who heard Jesus’ seven last words on the cross. No other disciple experienced this and it was one of John’s most important events in his life.
And as John thought about Jesus on the cross and was filled with the Holy Spirit, he wrote “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). And this became the most well-known verse in the Bible.
Today, people carry signs with this verse at baseball games and a famous burger joint has this verse printed on the bottom their soda cups. These words were given to John, who followed Jesus to the cross and saw with his own eyes Jesus being crucified. This verse tells us that Jesus obeyed the will of His Father and gave Himself for us, so that we can have eternal life.
“The servants who had drawn the water knew”. This verse tells us that if we live a life of following and obeying Jesus, we will see the glory of God that we couldn’t have known otherwise, and our dull and flavorless lives will be turned into a life filled with joy.
We don’t know how many days we have left in this life. But if we take a step of faith to follow the Lord and live for Him, we will surely see God’s miracles in our own lives. Let’s pray.
