英語圏には人間が持ち得る５３０もの恐怖症（Phobia）があり、そのひとつひとつに名前がつけられています。その内容は「Katsaridaphobia」、すなわちゴキブリ恐怖症から始まり、時計、お金、鏡、雪、コウモリ、義理の親、自転車、太陽、馬、親指、あしかに対する恐怖症、さらには長く待つことの恐怖症、風呂に入る恐怖症、道を横断する恐怖症、重力に対する恐怖症までいたり、「Homilophobia」という説教恐怖症（幸いなことに私はまだこの恐怖症に取りつかれてはいません）、もう、一切合財、全てのことに対する恐怖症「Panophobia」、はてには恐怖症に対する恐怖症、「Phobiaphobia」 というもう何がなんだか分からない恐怖症まであるのです。すなわち結論を申しますと私達は身の周りにあるほぼ何に対しても恐れをもちうる者だということです。
そのような一覧を眺めながら、ふっと私の心の中に「あれ、もしかしたら」と思わされることがありました。そこでこれら５３０の恐怖症を最初から最後まで三度、見直しました。しかし、その中にその恐怖症はありませんでした。何に対する恐怖症だと思いますか。

飼葉桶というしるし

２０１１年２月、イエス・キリストがお生まれになりましたベツレヘムを訪ねました。さいわいなことにその時、神学校の先輩であり、現在、イスラエル政府公認のガイドをしておられる柿内ルツ先生がベツレヘムを案内してくださいました。
ベツレヘムがイエス・キリストの誕生地であることを私達は知っています。しかし柿内先生を通して教えられたことは、イエス様が生まれた時代のベツレヘムは本当に小さくて、住民が１００人ほどの村だったということです。ということになりますと２，３０世帯が暮らす寒村だったということでしょう。
当地、サンディエゴでは夏になりますとダウンタウンのぺトコパークでパドレスのゲームがあります。その日になりますと普段は空地のような場所が一台１０ドルのパーキングスペースになります。３０台停めれば３００ドルですから土地の所有者にとっては夏の副収入といったところでしょうか。同じように普段は寒村で旅人もいないような土地のベツレヘムですが、人口調査が行われる時には旅行者があふれ、その時だけ家の片隅を貸し出して収益を得ようという人達もおり、ヨセフは身重のマリヤを連れながらそんな家々を訪ね歩き、どこにも一夜の宿はなく、牛や馬がいる小屋の片隅に身を横たえたのではないかと思います。
聖書はこのベツレヘムという村の詳細を記していません。しかし、確かなことはイエス様が産声をあげたその日に、私達と同じように日々の労働に汗を流し、朝夕の食事の準備をし、子供を寝かしつける人間がこの村にも暮らしていたということです。その住民の中にはもしかしたらイエス様が誕生した翌日、水を汲みに馬小屋から外に出できたたヨセフとすれ違った者がいたかもしれませんし、馬小屋にやってきた雇われ少年が飼葉桶に寝かされているイエス様の前で牛、馬に餌を与えていたかもしれません。
聖書、ルカによる福音書は御使いがそんなベツレヘムの草原で野宿をしていた羊飼いに語りかけた言葉を書き残しています。『恐れるな、見よ、すべての民に与えられる大きな喜びを、あなたがたに伝える。きょうダビデの町に、あなたがたのために救主がお生れになった。このかたこそ主なるキリストである。あなたがたは、幼な子が布にくるまって飼葉おけの中に寝かしてあるのを見るであろう。それが、あなたがたに与えられるしるしである』（ルカ２章１０節‐１３節）。
ここには私達の心をとらえる「あなたがたは、幼な子が布にくるまって飼葉おけの中に寝かしてあるのを見るであろう。それが、あなたがたに与えられるしるしである」という一文があります。
御使いは「幼子が布にくるまって飼葉おけの中に寝かしてある」ことが私達に与えられる「しるし」だと言いました。それが「めじるし」だというのです。さて、それではそれは何の「しるし」なのでしょうか。
まず第一に「しるし」とは「ある事実を証明するもの、証拠となるもの」です。私達が外国に行く時には必ずパスポートを携行します。そして、その国に入国する時にそのパスポートを提示します。そうしますとそこに入国許可のスタンプを押してくれます。そのスタンプは確かにこの人がこの国に、この日に、入国したということを証明するしるしとなります。証拠となります。
驚くべきことに時さかのぼることイエス・キリストの誕生７５０年も前に生きた預言者イザヤはこのような預言をしました。聖書イザヤ書にこう記されています。『それゆえ、主はみずから一つのしるしをあなたがたに与えられる。見よ、おとめがみごもって男の子を産む。その名はインマヌエルととなえられる』（イザヤ７章１４節）。
イザヤのこの言葉はいつの日か「神ご自身があなたたちに一つのしるしを与える」という約束の言葉として記されています。そして、そのしるしとは「おとめがみごもり、男の子が生まれる」というものでした。すなわち預言者イザヤの言葉はその時から７５０年もの間、神の国の「TO DO LIST」の中にあり続け、いよいよ時が満ち、このまだ実現されていなかった一件のニュースを携えて御使いは羊飼いに語ったのです『あなたがたは、幼な子が布にくるまって飼葉おけの中に寝かしてあるのを見るであろう。それが、あなたがたに与えられるしるしである』
そして、このことはまさしくイザヤの預言が確かに成就した「しるし」となりました。幼子がイエスがおとめマリアより生まれ、布にくるまって飼葉桶に寝かされているということ、それはイザヤの預言が成就したことを証明し、その証拠となったのです。
この世界にはこれまで幾百億もの人間が生まれ、死んでいきました。しかし、今だかつてその誕生が預言されていた人というのはこのキリスト以外に誰一人いないのです。ブッダもモハメッドも孔子も誰一人としてその誕生が預言されていた人はいないのです。ここにイエス・キリストがこの地上に生きた偉人達とは異なる、すなわち人を超えた存在であるという理由があるのです。
ですから私達の教会の玄関にはこんなしるし、サインがかかげられることでしょう。私達は人間に関するありがたい話や処世訓を聞きにここに来ているのではなくて、神の一人子イエス・キリストについて、そして神の言葉を聞くべくここに集っているのです。
二つ目のこと、それは「しるし」とは「そこにあるメッセージを象徴するもの」だということです。日本にはこのような「サイン、しるし」があり自動車につけられます。この「しるし」を見る者達はこのしるしから一つのメッセージを受け取ります。そうです「この車を運転している人はまだ免許取り立ての初心者ですから注意してください」ということです。
それでは「幼子が布にくるまれて飼い葉おけに寝かされている」という「しるし」にはどんなメッセージがこめられているのでしょうか。

これは意外でした。親にとって新生児の夜泣きというのは恐怖です。眠りかかった新生児に対して「起きないでおくれ、頼むからそのまま１０分でもいいから長く眠っていておくれ」と祈る思いはまさしく親にとって赤子に対する恐怖心といってもいいほどです。しかし、この一覧には生まれたばかりの子に対する恐れは含まれていないのです。
このことはとても大切なことを暗示しています。そうです。神様は私達が恐れる必要のないかたちとして、この世界に来てくださったということです。そうです、飼い葉おけに寝かされた幼子はまさしく「私達が恐れる必要のないしるし」であり、それは私達がこのお方に親しく近づくことができるというしるしでした。
教会に誰かが生まれたばかりの赤ちゃんを連れてきますと、たとえその赤ちゃんのことを知らずとも、その周りに人だかりができます。赤ちゃんは何も言わないのに、赤ちゃんを見つめる人達は皆が笑っているのです。しかし、私のような中年男性となると話は別です。私のような中年男性の周りに人だかりができることはまずないのです。取り囲んで皆がニコニコすることはないのです。時に私達、大人は時に互いに知らない者同士になると、互いに心を探ったり、警戒し合うからです。
そうです、キリストが布にくるまれ飼葉桶に寝かされているということが示すしるしは私達が恐れることなく神に近づくことができるということのしるしなのです。誰でも生まれて初めて教会の敷居をまたぐことは緊張することなのかもしれません。警戒心を抱くかもしれません。恐れを抱くかもしれません。でも、恐れる必要はないのです。それゆえに私達は教会の玄関口にこんなしるし、サインを張り出してもいいのかもしれません。
三つめ、それはしるしとは「気持ちを形に表したもの」です。年末になりますと「感謝のしるし」としてお歳暮が贈られます。金婚式に送られる記念品は夫と妻が長い結婚生活を続けてくることができた感謝と喜びのしるしとなるものです。
飼い葉桶は人としてイエス様が生まれ、人として生きることのしるしであり、それはイエス様が覚悟をもって私達の生きる地に宿ったということであり、それはイエス様の「私はあなたたちと共にいる」、いいえもっと言いますと「私はあなたたちと共にいたい」という気持ちをあらわしたものなのです。
先ほど読みましたようにイザヤはこう預言したのです『それゆえ、主はみずから一つのしるしをあなたがたに与えられる。見よ、おとめがみごもって男の子を産む。その名はインマヌエルととなえられる』（イザヤ７章１４節）。
御使いはイザヤが預言した「しるし」という言葉を用いて、その「しるし」は成就したということを語ったとお話しましたが、イザヤはさらに「この幼子はインマヌエルととなえられる」ということにも触れていました。さて、御使いはこのことにも心をとめていたのでしょうか。
イエスの１２弟子の一人であったマタイは自分が書いた福音書の中で御使いは羊飼いのみならず、マリアの許嫁（いいなずけ）であったヨセフにもあらわれてこう告げたと記録しています
『20彼が（ヨセフが）このことを思いめぐらしていたとき、主の使が夢に現れて言った、「ダビデの子ヨセフよ、心配しないでマリヤを妻として迎えるがよい。その胎内に宿っているものは聖霊によるのである。21彼女は男の子を産むであろう。その名をイエスと名づけなさい。彼は、おのれの民をそのもろもろの罪から救う者となるからである」。すべてこれらのことが起ったのは、主が預言者によって言われたことの成就するためである。すなわち、23「見よ、おとめがみごもって男の子を産むであろう。その名はインマヌエルと呼ばれるであろう」。
これは「神われらと共にいます」という意味である』（マタイ１章２０節‐２３節）。
御使いは７５０年もの間、イザヤの預言を忘れませんでした。しっかりとイザヤが預言したことをセフに告げたのです。そうです、その子はインマヌエルと呼ばれるであろうということです。そしてイザヤが触れることのなかった、このインマヌエルという言葉の意味をヨセフに伝えました。すなわち、それは「神われらと共にいます」ということです。
おそらく私達はこれから日本の天皇やイギリスの国王と親しくなることはないでしょう。なぜなら、彼らと私達の間には近づき得ない距離があるからです。しかし、イエス・キリストがベツレヘムの馬小屋で生まれたということは、どんな人間もこのキリストに近づくことができることを意味しました。さらに、それはこのキリストはいつも私達と共にいるというしるしなのです。
しかし、それにしてもこのようなことに私達は慣れていないのです。後に人間が作り上げてきたキリスト教文化、その絵画、その彫刻、建物、それらは私達と神との距離を生み出してきたからです。
中世の教会における十字架は私達が手の届かない屋根のてっぺんにあります。今、ベツレヘムにあります降誕教会の中もたじろぐような飾りつけがなされており、どう考えてもあの装飾は私達の日常とはかけ離れています。しかし、それらは全て後の人間が創作したもので、イエス・キリストは私達、人の暮らす日常のただ中に生まれたのです。それはすなわち私やあなたのすぐそばにキリストは今もいるということです。
インマヌエル、神我らと共にいますで始まったマタイの福音書の一番、最後はイエス・キリストのこのような言葉と共に閉じられていきます。
18「わたしは、天においても地においても、いっさいの権威を授けられた。19それゆえに、あなたがたは行って、すべての国民を弟子として、父と子と聖霊との名によって、彼らにバプテスマを施し、20あなたがたに命じておいたいっさいのことを守るように教えよ。見よ、わたしは世の終りまで、いつもあなたがたと共にいるのである」（マタイ２８章１８節‐２０節）。
これは私達がこの地上にある限り、片時も離れることなくキリストは私達と共にいるということです。肉体を有する者同士であのなら、いつも共にいるということは不可能です。しかし、このお方はいつも私達と共にいるのです。
マタイはこのことがよほど嬉しかったのでしょうね。その真ん中の１８章１９節２０節にもこんなイエス様の言葉を書き残しました「まことに、あなたがたにもう一度、告げます。もし、あなたがたのうちふたりが、どんな事でも、地上で心を一つにして祈るなら、天におられるわたしの父は、それをかなえてくださいます。ふたりでも三人でも、わたしの名において集まる所には、わたしもその中にいるからです」（マタイ１８章１９節、２０節）。
飼葉桶に寝かされたキリストは「わたしは世の終わりまであなたたちと共にいる」ということを示すしるしです。ですから私達はこのようなしるし、サインを私達の家に、子供の通学カバンに、病床のベットの傍らに掲げることができるのです。
四つ目、「しるし」は自分が所属しているものを表します。そう、時にそれは国旗であったり、家柄をあらわす紋章であったりします。同じようにこの飼い葉おけで生まれたイエス様は私達が何に属しているのかということのしるしとなります。
すなわち神の子イエスが人として生まれ、布に包まれ飼葉桶に寝かされたということはこのキリストが人として私達と同じようにこの世界に生きたということでした。しかし、私達とイエス様が異なるのはイエス様はこの世界にあって、その最後に行き着くところは既にこの誕生と共に決定していたということです。
すなわち、その最後はキリストが私達人の罪の身代わりとなり、十字架にかかるということであり、このキリストを信じる者全てにはある約束が与えられるのです。そうです、それは私達が「ある者になる」、「自らが属するところを見出すことができる」という約束です。先週も開いたところですがイエスの愛弟子ヨハネはイエス様を受け入れる者達についてこのような約束を書きました。
12しかし、彼を受けいれた者、すなわち、その名を信じた人々には、彼は神の子となる力を与えたのである。13それらの人は、血すじによらず、肉の欲によらず、また、人の欲にもよらず、ただ神によって生れたのである。14そして言は肉体となり、わたしたちのうちに宿った。わたしたちはその栄光を見た。それは父のひとり子としての栄光であって、めぐみとまこととに満ちていた（ヨハネ１章１２節‐１４節）。
このキリストを信じる者は血筋によらず、肉の欲、人の欲によらず神によって新しく生まれ、神の子となる力が与えられるというのです。すなわち飼葉に寝かされているキリストは私達が神の子となる身分が授けられるというしるしなのです。
私達は心のどこかで自分がどこに属している者なのかということをいつも探し求めているのかもしれません。このことがどこにも見つからない時に私達は深い孤独を感じます。しかし、もし私達がこのことを見出すのなら、私達の心に喜びがあふれてきます。その喜びは今、そして明日、私達が何のために生きているのかということを教えてくれるからです。そして、その喜びは何をもってしても奪われることはないのです。ですから、誰でもキリストにある者は、目には見えませんがこのようなしるし、サインをいつもその胸元につけて生きているのです。
飼い葉おけは神が私達に与えられたしるしだったということを今日はお話しました。飼葉桶はイザヤの預言の成就を象徴するものでした。そのことにより私達はイエスというお方がどんなお方であるかということを知ります。そうです、この方こそ神の一人子、イエス・キリストです。このお方が寝かされた飼葉桶はいかなる人も恐れることなく神様に近づくことができることをあらわすしるしです。飼葉桶はイエス・キリストがいついかなる時も私達と共にいたいと願っているということのしるしです。そして、飼葉桶はこのお方が世の終わりまで私達と共にいる、今、この時も私達と共にいるというしるしです。そして、飼葉桶が十字架に続く始まりだとするのなら、その飼葉桶は私達が神の子となることを保証するしるしなのです。
これらのサインを私達は教会に掲げましょう。私達の家々に掲げましょう。私達の心に掲げましょう。私達はその喜びに今日も明日も生かされ続けるのです。お祈りします。
Sign of a Manger

In December of 2011, I visited the town of Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus Christ. Luckily, Mrs. Ruth Kakiuchi, my seminary senior, and an official licensed guide of Israel, accompanied me to this town of Bethlehem as a guide.
We know that Jesus Christ was born in this town of Bethlehem. But, Mrs. Kakiuchi informed me that when Jesus was born, Bethlehem was a tiny village of only about 100 residents. This means that at that time, there must have been only twenty to thirty homes there.
In our city of San Diego, in summer, Petco Park in downtown hosts baseball games for the Padres. On such days, normally empty spaces turn into parking spaces charging 10 dollars for each car. This is a nice side income for residents since they can make 300 dollars for parking only 30 cars. A similar situation was seen in Bethlehem since national census required people to come back to their home town of Bethlehem. Many home owners tried to make money offering night’s stay. Joseph, with pregnant wife Mary, had to visit each of these houses looking for lodging. Failing to find lodging, they had to find a resting space in the corner of a horse barn.
The Bible does not provide us too much information about this village of Bethlehem. We are sure, however, that on the day Jesus was born, many people lived and worked there, preparing their daily meals, and making sure their children had warm beds for the night. Some of these village people must have crossed their paths with Joseph fetching water. Some children hired to work the horse barn must have fed the cattle and horses in front of Jesus.
The Bible, the Gospel according to Luke, recorded the words of an angel talking to the shepherds out in the field at night: “But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” (Luke 2:10-12)
Here is a sentence that catches our heart, namely: “This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
The angel said that a sign was given to us and that was “a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” So, the angel said this was a sign. What was this sign telling us? What did it mean?
First of all, a sign identifies and verifies.
We always carry a passport with us when travelling abroad. When we enter the destination country, we present the passport. An entry stamp is applied to the passport acknowledging entry. This verifies that this person entered this country on this day. This will serve as an official record, a proof.
Amazingly, 750 years before Jesus was born, prophet Isaiah made the following prediction. This is recorded in the book of Isaiah: ”Therefore the Lord himself will give youa sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, andwill call him Immanuel.” (Isaiah 7:14)
These words of Isaiah were recorded as a promise that God himself would one day provide a sign. This sign was that a virgin would be with child and would give birth to a son. These words of prophet Isaiah stayed in the “To Do List” of heaven for 750 years until the time had come. And, the angel delivered message announcing the delivery of the promised event. “This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
This was a sign that what Isaiah had predicted had come to be realized. The prophecy of Isaiah was verified when Virgin Mary gave birth to an infant Jesus and the infant was wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.
Billions of people have been born on this earth and have died in this world. But there was no body other than Jesus whose birth was predicted years before his arrival. There was no prediction about the birth of Buddha, or Muhammad or Confucius. This shows that Jesus Christ was entirely different from other famous people who were born on this earth. Jesus was way above any others.
So, we can post a sign in front of our church: an image of a manger with “mission accomplished” caption. This announces that we gather here not to listen to teachings of wise men, but we gather to listen to Jesus Christ, the only son of God, and to the words of God.
The second point: Sign reflects the message provided.
In Japan, there is a sticker sign that is seen on automobile cars. It is like a shoot of budding leaf. Those who see this sign gets one message from it. The message is that “The driver of this car is a novice driver. Please be aware of that.”
Then, what is the message that we get from the sign of an infant wrapped in clothes and lying in a manger?
I have a poster on my office door. It has been there for a long time. This poster is a list of phobias. Over 530 different types of phobia are listed here, with names of them. The list starts with Katsaridaphobia, a fear of cockroaches and lists fear of a clock, money, mirror, snow, bats, in-laws, bicycles, sun, horse, thumb, seals. It also lists fear of long wait, fear of taking baths, fear of crossing street, and fear of gravity. There is homilophobia, a fear of sermons (luckily I do not have this phobia, yet). Panophobia is a fear of everything. Phobiaphobia is a fear of phobia. So, there are all types of phobias in this world. We can say that we could be fearful of almost anything around us.
I was looking at this list and something hit me. So, I went back through this list of 530 phobias from the beginning to the end three times. But, I could not find the particular phobia I was looking for. What kind of phobia do you think I was looking for? A phobia of babies. The list does include fear of children and fear of giving birth. The list includes fear about just about everything. But, there is no phobia of babies.
This was somewhat surprising. Parents are afraid of babies crying through the night. Many parents almost pray to the newly born: “Do not wake up. Please sleep for 10 more minutes.” This is almost a fear of babies. But the list did not include phobia of a newly born.
This tells us an important message. God came to this world in a form that no one on this earth need to be afraid of. The baby lying in a manger is a sign that we do not need to be afraid. It is a sign that we can approach him safely.
Whenever someone brings a baby to church, people instantly gather around the baby even though they do not know the baby. People smile at the baby although the baby does not talk to them. But, people do not treat me, a middle-aged man, like that. People would not gather around me instantly for no particular reason. They would not be smiling at me. This is especially true among unacquainted grown-ups. They could be suspicious of each other.
So, the fact that Jesus was wrapped in clothes and was lying in the manger was a sign that we could approach God without any fear. People coming to church for the first time might feel uneasy. The person might not trust strangers, and could be afraid of them. But, they do not have to feel that way. So, we could post another image of the manger – with the caption “No fear” here.
The third point is that a sign reflects someone’s feeling.
Towards the end of a year, an year-end gift is sent to show appreciation. Gift sent to commemorate a golden wedding anniversary is a sign reflecting gratitude and joy of long and happy marriage between the husband and wife.
The manger is a sign that Jesus was born as a man to live among us. He came fully aware of its consequences. He knew what he had to face here on earth. This sign says that “Jesus is with us”, and that it reflects God’s wish: “I want to be with you”
As I have shown you earlier, Isaiah prophesized: ”Therefore the Lord himself will give youa sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, andwill call him Immanuel.” (Isaiah 7:14)
The angel used the word “sign” as prophet Isaiah did, indicating that this sign was fulfilled with the birth of Jesus. Additionally, Isaiah said that this baby is to be called “Immanuel”. Did the angel remember this?
Matthew, one of 12 disciples of Jesus, mentions in the book of gospel he wrote that the angel also appeared to Joseph, fiancé of Mary, and delivered a message: 20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”). (Matthew 1:20-23)
The angel did not forget the words of prophet Isaiah for 750 years. Angel declared that prophesy of Isaiah came to bear fruit. And that the baby is to be called Immanuel. Although Isaiah did not explain, the angel told Joseph the meaning of this word Immanuel. And that is Immanuel means “God with us”
We could never get to know Emperor of Japan or King of England intimately since there is a great distance between us and these royalties. But the fact that Jesus Christ was born in a manger in Bethlehem meant that any of us can approach Jesus Christ. And that is a sign that Jesus Christ is with us all the time.
Unfortunately, we are not familiar with this concept since people who came after Jesus have created religious culture, picture renderings, sculptures, and buildings that have put distance between us and God.
Medieval churches had placed a cross on top of the roof, too high for people to reach. The church of nativity in Bethlehem overwhelms us with decoration and we could not feel close or comfortable. Such decorations are far from our daily life. But, these were created by people after the birth of Christ. Jesus Christ was born into this world to live among us. This also means that Jesus is with us and among us even today.
The Gospel According to Matthew, which started with Immanuel, “God with us”, is closed with the following words from Jesus Christ:
18 “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20)
This means that as long as we live on this earth, Jesus Christ will be with us at every moment. People cannot be with each other physically all the time. But, this Jesus is with us all the time.
Matthew must have felt grateful about this. Matthew recorded words of Jesus in Chapter 18 verses 19-20: “Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:19-20)
Jesus lying in the manger was a sign that said Jesus would be with us until the end of this world. That is why we can post the image of the manger with the caption reading “God is with us” at our home, on school bags, and by the sick bed.
The fourth point: A sign shows where we belong.
Such sign could be in a form of a national flag or family crest. In the similar manner, this Jesus Christ lying in the manger shows a sign indicating where we belong.
The fact that the Son of God Jesus was born as a man and was wrapped in cloths and was lying in a manger meant that Jesus lived in this world just like us. But, what differentiated Jesus from us was that the manner of his death was already determined at his birth.
Namely, Jesus was to pay for our sins on behalf of us and would be killed on the cross. It also was a promise given to all who believe in Jesus. This promise was that we would become someone and that we would find where we belong. This is what I discussed last week. Namely, disciple John wrote about the promise given to those who would accept Jesus.
12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:12-14)
The promise says that those who believe in Jesus would be given right to be born again and to become children of God – regardless of natural decent, human decision, or human will. This means that Jesus lying in the manger is a sign that we are given right to be children of God.
Perhaps we are all searching to find where we really belong. Failing to find the answer, we feel left out. But, when we find the answer, our heart will swell with joy. This is because that would tell us why we are living here today and tomorrow.
And this joy cannot be taken away. For this reason, anyone in Christ has a sign, albeit invisible, pinned to his chest which reads “Hello, I am a Child of God”.
I said that the manger was a sign given to us from God. This was a sign that prophesy of Isaiah had been fulfilled. With this we learn who Jesus is. Namely, that he is the only son of God, Jesus Christ. The manger in which Jesus was lying signified that anyone can approach God without fear. This manger is also a sign that Jesus Christ wanted to be with us at every moment of our life. It is a sign that Jesus is with us to the end of this world, and that he is with us at this very moment. And if the manger leads us to the cross, this manger is also a sign guaranteeing that we can become children of God.
Let us post this sign at our church, at our homes, and at our heart. We will live in joy of it today and tomorrow to come. Let us pray.

１）ルカ２章１０節‐１３節を読みましょう。このところに「それが、あなたがたに与えられる‟しるし”である」という言葉があります。「しるし：サイン」と聞いて、あなたが思い起こすことは何ですか。ここで言われている「しるし：サイン」とは何ですか？
２）イザヤ７章１４節を読みましょう。ここにはイエス様誕生７５０年前に生きた預言者イザヤのイエス様誕生の預言が書かれており、ここにも「しるし」という言葉が書かれています。「しるし」とは「ある事実を証明するもの、証拠となるもの」であるのなら、このイザヤの預言と上記ルカの言葉とはどんな関係がありますか。
３）「しるし」とは「そこにあるメッセージを象徴するもの」です。御使いがザカリヤに（ルカ１章１３節‐１４節）、マリアに（ルカ１章３０節‐３２節）、羊飼いに（ルカ２章１０節‐１３節）語った言葉は全て「恐れるな」という一言で始まっています。飼葉桶に寝かされたイエスはなぜ「恐れるな」というメッセージを私達に語りかけるのですか。
４）「しるし」は私達の「気持ちを表したものです」。イザヤ書７章１４節、マタイ１章２０節‐２３節にはイエス様が「インマヌエル」と呼ばれるということが書かれています。この「インマヌエル」から神様の私達に対するどんな気持ちが分かりますか。
５）「しるし」は私達が「所属しているもの」を表します。ヨハネ１章１２節‐１４節には私達にどんな約束がなされていますか。なぜ飼葉桶に寝かされているイエス様が私達にこのようなものを与えてくださるのでしょうか。
